Direct detection of water in its vapour phase in the tenuous lunar environment through in situ measurements carried out by the Chandra’s Altitudinal Composition Explorer (CHACE) payload, onboard the Moon Impact Probe (MIP) of Chandrayaan I mission vindicates the presence of water on the surface of the moon in form of ice at higher lunar latitudes inferred from IR absorption spectroscopy, (especially that of OH), by the Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M3) of Chandrayaan I. The quadrupole mass spectrometer based payload, CHACE, sampled the lunar neutral atmosphere every 4 s with a broad latitudinal (∼40°N to 90°S, with a resolution of ∼0.1°) and altitudinal (from 98 km up to impact on the lunar surface with a resolution of ∼0.25 km) coverage in the sunlit side of the moon for the first time. These two (CHACE and M3) complementary experiments are shown to collectively provide unambiguous signatures for the distribution of water in solid and gaseous phases in Earth’s moon.  相似文献

We analyze and discuss the properties of decameter spikes observed in July?–?August 2002 by the UTR-2 radio telescope. These bursts have a short duration (about one second) and occur in a narrow frequency bandwidth (50?–?70 kHz). They are chaotically located in the dynamic spectrum. Decameter spikes are weak bursts: their fluxes do not exceed 200?–?300 s.f.u. An interesting feature of these spikes is the observed linear increase of the frequency bandwidth with frequency. This dependence can be explained in the framework of the plasma mechanism that causes the radio emission, taking into account that Langmuir waves are generated by fast electrons within a narrow angle θ≈13°?–?18° along the direction of the electron propagation. In the present article we consider the problem of the short lifetime of decameter spikes and discuss why electrons generate plasma waves in limited regions.  相似文献

We discuss a hard x-ray telescope for the range 25–70 keV based on a one-dimensional lobster-eye telescope and x-ray supermirror coatings. This approach enables wide field-of-view imaging. A telescope suitable for a large balloon payload, with a 50×100 cm frontal area, could have an effective area of 50–100 cm2 and a 100×100 field of view, and thereby detect AGN that are 0.5 milliCrab in the soft x-rays in a 104 second exposure. 29% of the sky could be surveyed to this limit in a 2-week balloon flight, reaching 6 times fainter than the HEAO A-4 all-sky survey.  相似文献

We have investigated the resonances due to the perturbations of a geo-centric synchronous satellite under the gravitational forces of the Sun, the Moon and the Earth including it’s equatorial ellipticity. The resonances at the points resulting from (i) the commensurability between \(\dot{\theta}_{0}\) (steady-state orbital angular rate of the satellite) and \(\dot{\theta}_{m}\) (angular velocity of the moon around the earth) and (ii) the commensurability between \(\dot{\theta}_{0}\) and \(\dot{\psi}_{0}\) (steady-state regression rate of the synchronous satellite) are analyzed. The amplitude and the time period of the oscillation have been determined by using the procedure as given in Brown and Shook (Planetary Theory, Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1933). We have observed that as θ m (0°θ m ≤45°) and ψ (0°ψ≤135°) increase, the amplitude decreases and the time period also decreases. We have also shown the effect of ψ on amplitude and time period for 0°Γ≤45°, where Γ is the angle measured from the minor axis of the earth’s equatorial ellipse to the projection of the satellite on the plane of the equator.  相似文献

We describe here an ongoing upgrade to the legacy Ooty Radio Telescope (ORT). The ORT is a cylindrical parabolic cylinder 530 m × 30 m in size operating at a frequency of 326.5 (or z~3.35 for the HI 21-cm line). The telescope has been constructed on a North–South hill slope whose gradient is equal to the latitude of the hill, making it effectively equatorially mounted. The feed consists of an array of 1056 dipoles. The key feature of this upgrade is the digitization and cross-correlation of the signals of every set of 4-dipoles. This converts the ORT into a 264 element interferometer with a field-of-view of 2°×27.4°cos(δ). This upgraded instrument is called the Ooty Wide Field Array (OWFA). This paper briefly describes the salient features of the upgrade, as well as its main science drivers. There are three main science drivers viz. (1) observations of the large scale distribution of HI in the post-reionization era, (2) studies of the propagation of plasma irregularities through the inner heliosphere and (3) blind surveys for transient sources. More details on the upgrade, as well as on the expected science uses can be found in other papers in this special issue.  相似文献

IPS observations with the Big Scanning Array of Lebedev Physical Institute (BSA LPI) radio telescope at the frequency 111 MHz have been monitored since 2006. All the sources, about several hundred daily, with a scintillating flux greater than 0.2 Jy are recorded for 24 hours in the 16 beams of the radio telescope covering a sky strip of 8° declination width. We present some results of IPS observations for the recent period of low solar activity considering a statistical ensemble of scintillating radio sources. The dependences of the averaged over ensemble scintillation index on heliocentric distance are considerably weaker than the dependence expected for a spherically symmetric geometry. The difference is especially pronounced in the year 2008 during the very deep solar activity minimum period. These features are explained by the influence of the heliospheric current sheet that is seen as a strong concentration of turbulent solar wind plasma aligned with the solar equatorial plane. A local maximum of the scintillation index is found in the anti-solar direction. Future prospects of IPS observations using BSA LPI are briefly discussed.  相似文献

In this study we use a numerical simulation of an artificial coronal mass ejection (CME) to validate a method for calculating propagation directions and kinematical profiles of interplanetary CMEs (ICMEs). In this method observations from heliospheric images are constrained with in-situ plasma and field data at 1 AU. These data are used to convert measured ICME elongations into distance by applying the harmonic mean approach, which assumes a spherical shape of the ICME front. We used synthetic white-light images, similar to those observed by STEREO-A/HI, for three different separation angles between remote and in-situ spacecraft of 30°, 60°, and 90°. To validate the results of the method, the images were compared to the apex speed profile of the modeled ICME, as obtained from a top view. This profile reflects the “true” apex kinematics because it is not affected by scattering or projection effects. In this way it is possible to determine the accuracy of the method for revealing ICME propagation directions and kinematics. We found that the direction obtained by the constrained harmonic mean method is not very sensitive to the separation angle (30° sep: ?=W7; 60° sep: ?=W12; 90° sep: ?=W15; true dir.: E0/W0). For all three cases the derived kinematics agree relatively well with the real kinematics. The best consistency is obtained for the 30° case, while with growing separation angle the ICME speed at 1 AU is increasingly overestimated (30° sep: ΔV arr≈??50 km?s?1, 60° sep: ΔV arr≈+?75 km?s?1, 90° sep: ΔV arr≈+?125 km?s?1). Especially for future L4/L5 missions, the 60° separation case is highly interesting in order to improve space-weather forecasts.  相似文献

We have determined the meridional flows in subsurface layers for 18 Carrington rotations (CR 2097 to 2114) analyzing high-resolution Dopplergrams obtained with the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) instrument onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). We are especially interested in flows at high latitudes up to 75° in order to address the question whether the meridional flow remains poleward or reverses direction (so-called counter cells). The flows have been determined in depth from near-surface layers to about 16 Mm using the HMI ring-diagram pipeline. The measured meridional flows show systematic effects, such as a variation with the B 0-angle and a variation with central meridian distance (CMD). These variations have been taken into account to lead to more reliable flow estimates at high latitudes. The corrected average meridional flow is poleward at most depths and latitudes with a maximum amplitude of about $20~\mathrm{m\,s}^{-1}$ near 37.5° latitude. The flows are more poleward on the equatorward side of the mean latitude of magnetic activity at 22° and less poleward on the poleward side, which can be interpreted as convergent flows near the mean latitude of activity. The corrected meridional flow is poleward at all depths within ±?67.5° latitude. The corrected flow is equatorward only at 75° latitude in the southern hemisphere at depths between about 4 and 8 Mm and at 75° latitude in the northern hemisphere only when the B 0 angle is barely large enough to measure flows at this latitude. These counter cells are most likely the remains of an insufficiently corrected B 0-angle variation and not of solar origin. Flow measurements and B 0-angle corrections are difficult at the highest latitude because these flows are only determined during limited periods when the B 0 angle is sufficiently large.  相似文献

Resonances in a geo-centric synchronous satellite under the gravitational forces of the Sun, the Moon and the Earth including it’s equatorial ellipticity have been investigated. The resonance at two points resulting from the commensurability between the mean motion of the satellite and Γ (angle measured from the minor axis of the Earth’s equatorial ellipse to the projection of the satellite on the plane of the equator) is analyzed. The amplitude and the time period of the oscillation have been determined by using the procedure of Brown and Shook. We have observed that the amplitude and the time period of the oscillation decrease as Γ increases in the first quadrant. The radial deviation (Δr) and the tangential deviation (r c Δθ) have been determined. Here r c represents the synchronous altitude. The effects of the arithmetic sum of amplitudes λ i involved in the perturbation equations on orbital inclination 0°α 0≤90° are shown. It is observed that $\sum_{i = 1}^{46} \lambda_{i}$ increases as α 0 increases. We have also determined the displacement ΔD (called drift) due to the oscillatory terms under the summation sign involved in the equations of motion of the satellite. We have observed that the value of ΔD is less than 0.5°.  相似文献

Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) model is implemented to recognize the Total Electron Content (TEC) time series of daily, temporal as well as seasonal characteristics throughout the 24th solar cycle period of the year 2015 in the study. The Vertical (vTEC) analysis has been carried out with Global Positioning System (GPS) data sets collected from five stations from India namely GNT, Guntur (16.44° N, 80.62° E), and IISC, Bangalore (12.97° N, 77.59° E), LCK2, Lucknow (26.76° N, 80.88° E), one station from Thailand namely AITB, Bangkok (14.07° N, 100.61° E), and one station from South Andaman Island namely PBR, Port Blair (11.43° N, 92.43° E), located in low latitude region. The first five singular value modes constitute about 98% of the total variance, which are linearly transformed from the observed TEC data sets. So it is viable to decrease the number of modeling parameters. The Fourier Series Analysis (FSA) is carried out to characterize the solar-cycle, annual and semi-annual dependences through modulating the first three singular values by the solar (F10.7) and geomagnetic (Ap) indices. The positive correlation coefficient (0.75) of daily averaged GPS–TEC with daily averaged F10.7 strongly supports the temporal variations of the ionospheric features depends on the solar activity. Further, the significance and reliability of the SVD model is evaluated by comparing it with GPS–TEC data and the standard global model (Standard Plasma-Spherical Ionospheric Model, SPIM and International Reference Ionosphere, IRI 2016).  相似文献

Photometric Stability of the Lunar Surface   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Hugh H. Kieffer 《Icarus》1997,130(2):323-327
The rate at which cratering events currently occur on the Moon is considered in light of their influence on the use of the Moon as a radiometric standard. The radiometric effect of small impact events is determined empirically from the study of Clementine images. Events that would change the integral brightness of the moon by 1% are expected once per 1.4 Gyr. Events that cause a 1% shift in one pixel for low Earth-orbiting instruments with a 1-km nadir field of view are expected approximately once each 43 Myr. Events discernible at 1% radiometric resolution with a 5 arc-sec telescope resolution correspond to crater diameters of approximately 210 m and are expected once every 200 years. These rates are uncertain by a factor of two. For a fixed illumination and observation geometry, the Moon can be considered photometrically stable to 1 × 10−8per annum for irradiance, and 1 × 10−7per annum for radiance at a resolution common for spacecraft imaging instruments, exceeding reasonable instrument goals by six orders of magnitude.  相似文献

We have used the Krall flux-rope model (Krall and St. Cyr, Astrophys. J. 2006, 657, 1740) (KFR) to fit 23 magnetic cloud (MC)-CMEs and 30 non-cloud ejecta (EJ)-CMEs in the Living With a Star (LWS) Coordinated Data Analysis Workshop (CDAW) 2011 list. The KFR-fit results shows that the CMEs associated with MCs (EJs) have been deflected closer to (away from) the solar disk center (DC), likely by both the intrinsic magnetic structures inside an active region (AR) and ambient magnetic structures (e.g. nearby ARs, coronal holes, and streamers, etc.). The mean absolute propagation latitudes and longitudes of the EJ-CMEs (18°, 11°) were larger than those of the MC-CMEs (11°, 6°) by 7° and 5°, respectively. Furthermore, the KFR-fit widths showed that the MC-CMEs are wider than the EJ-CMEs. The mean fitting face-on width and edge-on width of the MC-CMEs (EJ-CMEs) were 87 (85)° and 70 (63)°, respectively. The deflection away from DC and narrower angular widths of the EJ-CMEs have caused the observing spacecraft to pass over only their flanks and miss the central flux-rope structures. The results of this work support the idea that all CMEs have a flux-rope structure.  相似文献

The onset of the “Rush to the Poles” of polar-crown prominences and their associated coronal emission is a harbinger of solar maximum. Altrock (Solar Phys. 216, 343, 2003) showed that the “Rush” was well observed at 1.15 R o in the Fe xiv corona at the Sacramento Peak site of the National Solar Observatory prior to the maxima of Cycles 21 to 23. The data show that solar maximum in those cycles occurred when the center line of the Rush reached a critical latitude of 76°±2°. Furthermore, in the previous three cycles solar maximum occurred when the highest number of Fe xiv emission features per day (averaged over 365 days and both hemispheres) first reached latitudes 20°±1.7°. Applying the above conclusions to Cycle 24 is difficult due to the unusual nature of this cycle. Cycle 24 displays an intermittent Rush that is only well-defined in the northern hemisphere. In 2009 an initial slope of 4.6°?year?1 was found in the north, compared to an average of 9.4±1.7°?year?1 in the previous cycles. An early fit to the Rush would have reached 76° at 2014.6. However, in 2010 the slope increased to 7.5°?year?1 (an increase did not occur in the previous three cycles). Extending that rate to 76°±2° indicates that the solar maximum in the northern hemisphere already occurred at 2011.6±0.3. In the southern hemisphere the Rush to the Poles, if it exists, is very poorly defined. A linear fit to several maxima would reach 76° in the south at 2014.2. In 1999, persistent Fe xiv coronal emission known as the “extended solar cycle” appeared near 70° in the North and began migrating towards the equator at a rate 40 % slower than the previous two solar cycles. However, in 2009 and 2010 an acceleration occurred. Currently the greatest number of emission features is at 21° in the North and 24° in the South. This indicates that solar maximum is occurring now in the North but not yet in the South.  相似文献

Evidence for very recent emission of volatiles on the Moon is primarily of four types: (1) transient lunar optical events observed by Earth-based astronomers; (2) excursions on Apollo SIDE and mass spectrometer instruments; (3) localized Rn222/Po210 enhancements on the lunar surface detected by Apollo 15 and 16 orbital alpha spectrometers; (4) presence in lunar fines of retrapped Ar40 and other volatiles. Available evidence indicates that the release rate of volatile substances into the lunar atmosphere is not steady, but instead sporadic and episodic. Rn222/Po210 anomalies are at locations that are among those from which transient events have most often been reported (edges of maria, certain specific craters), and are probably related to them. Volatiles emitted at maria rims may originate in the Moon's fluid core, reaching the surface through deep cylindrical fault systems that ring the maria borders. The sources of volatiles emitted at craters such as Aristarchus or Tsiolkovsky, which possess floors which are cracked or filled with dark lava and possess central peaks, are more likely to be local pockets of magma or trapped gas at shallower depths. The volatiles are produced directly by radioactive decay (He4, Ar40, Rn) and by heating (other volatiles). The release by heating can occur either during melting or by ‘bakeout’ of unmelted materials. Release of gas into the lunar atmosphere is probably triggered by buildup of its own pressure. This may be assisted by tidal forces exerted on the Moon by the Earth. In addition to independent release, volatile emission is also expected to accompany other lunar activity, such as ash flows, if any lunar volcanism is presently active.

We present six \(\mbox{V}R_{c}I_{c}\) light curves of UX CrB from observations carried out from 2011–2015. We also obtained three optical spectra using the 2.16-m optical telescope and LAMOST survey at the national astronomical observatories. We classified its spectral type as \(\mbox{G2}\pm\mbox{2V}\). We noticed that there are strong absorptions in the Hα, Hβ, Ca ii H&K and infrared triplet lines in the observed spectra. By subtracting away the photospheric contribution, we also noticed that there are small excess emissions in these chromospheric active lines, which indicate there are weak chromospheric activities. We tried and obtained four photometric solutions with different spot positions from our full and high time-resolution light curves in 2012, using the updated Wilson-Devinney code. The model with two spots on the primary produced the best result for explaining the observed light curves from 2012. Moreover, we explained all other light curves based on our photometric solution using our 2012 light curves. There are two active longitudes at about 68° and 255°. We noticed that the starspots have both long-time (years) and short-time (about two months) variation by analyzing the light curves and its starspot parameters. There is also an obvious oscillation of light curve maximum between 0.25 and 0.75 phases by analyzing the values of \(\mbox{Max.~I} - \mbox{Max.~II}\). We conclude UX CrB are the evolved main-sequence stars with strong photometric and chromospheric activities.  相似文献

A comparison of the lunar frontside gravity field with topography indicates that low-density ( 2.9 g cm–3) types of rock form a surface layer or crust of variable thickness: 40-60 km beneath terrae; 20-40 km beneath non-mascon maria; 0-20 km beneath mascon maria. The observed offset between lunar centers of mass and figure is consistent with farside crustal thicknesses of 40-50 km, similar to frontside terra thicknesses. The Moon is asymmetric in crustal thickness, and also in the distribution of maria and gamma radioactivity. Early bombardment of the Moon by planetesimals, in both heliocentric and geocentric orbits, is examined as a possible cause of the asymmetries. The presence of a massive companion (Earth) causes a spin-orbit coupled Moon to be bombarded non-uniformly. The most pronounced local concentration of impacts would have occurred on the west limb of the Moon, when it orbited close to the Earth, if low-eccentricity heliocentric planetesimals were still abundant in the solar system at that time.A very intense bombardment of this type could have redistributed crustal material on the Moon, thinning the west limb crust appreciably. This would have caused a change in position of the principal axes of inertia, and a reorientation of the spin-orbit coupled Moon such that the thinnest portion of its crust turned toward one of the poles. Erupting lavas would have preferentially flooded such a thin-crusted, low-lying area. This would have caused another readjustment of principal moments, and a reorientation of the Moon such that the mare areas tipped toward the equator. The north-south and nearside-farside asymmetries of mare distribution on the present Moon can be understood in terms of such a history.Paper dedicated to Prof. Harold C. Urey on the occasion of his 80th birthday on 29 April 1973.  相似文献

A 10-cm aperture telescope equipped with coronagraphic capabilities, using occulting masks of various size and material, has been developed to obtain low-light-level, wide-angle (~7o FOV), narrow-band filtered images of sodium exospheres at Io, the Moon and Mercury. Here we describe new instrument capabilities and recent findings about the extraordinarily long tails of sodium gas discovered in the lunar and hermean exospheres. Spatial and temporal variability patterns captured in such images can be used to study changes in surface sputtering processes and radiation pressure acceleration effects in the inner solar system.  相似文献

This paper deals with the existence and stability of the non-collinear libration points in the restricted three-body problem when both the primaries are ellipsoid with equal mass and identical in shape. We have determined the equations of motion of the infinitesimal mass which involves elliptic integrals and then we have investigated the existence and stability of the non-collinear libration points. This is observed that the non-collinear libration points exist only in the interval 52°<φ<90° and form an isosceles triangle with the primaries. Further we observed that the non collinear libration points are unstable in 52°<φ<90°.  相似文献

This work includes a study of some properties such as speed, apparent width, acceleration and latitudes, etc. of all types of Prominence Eruptions (PEs) and the associated Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) observed during the period of 1997–2006 by Nobeyama Radioheliograph (NORH) and SOHO/LASCO covering the solar cycle 23. The average speed of prominences and associated CMEs are 51 km/sec and 559 km/sec, respectively. The average angular width is 32° and 74°, respectively. As expected the associated CMEs are relatively faster and wider than the prominences.  相似文献

At small phase angles the light scattered by the Moon reveals a negative polarization branch whose average amplitude is 1%. We present results of polarimetric mappings of the Moon in Pmin at a phase angle near 11°. The observations were carried out with the Kharkov 50-cm telescope at the Maidanak Observatory (Middle Asia) using a polarizing filter. A thorough calibration of the camera array allows for the reliable detection of significant variations of |Pmin| over the lunar surface, from 0.2 to 1.6%, at a wavelength of 0.52 μm. The smallest |Pmin| are characteristic of young bright craters, while the |Pmin| are the highest for the lunar highland and bright mare areas. The horse-shoe shape of the correlation dependence Pmin (albedo) is treated with data of our laboratory measurements of powdered surfaces and computer modeling of light scattering by small particles with the DDA (discrete dipole approximation) technique.  相似文献
