This paper summarizes the results of a large-scale ‘beyond BACI’ designed assessment of the influences of effluent discharges from Sydney's deepwater sewage outfalls on assemblages of larval fishes. Larval fishes were sampled at three outfalls and at multiple control locations three times before and three times after the deepwater outfalls were commissioned. Sampling was stratified to account for time of year, oceanography and plume behaviour. Large numbers of fish larvae were caught near the outfalls and were thus exposed to sewage plumes. Results indicated that some larvae that normally occur at depth were displaced upwards by rising plumes, particularly when plumes surfaced. No predictable positive or negative numerical responses of larvae to outfalls were evident. Rather responses varied depending on the taxa, outfall and season. The large inherent level of natural spatial and temporal variability in abundances of larvae swamped the detection of possible impacts for many taxa. Future field based studies need to track larvae through plumes to assess changes in numbers, but also to test effects on the health and condition of larvae.  相似文献

In order to predict the behaviour of plumes from three deep ocean outfalls for sewage off Sydney, three-dimensional numerical modelling was used. The modelling suite was driven by data generated by an oceanographic monitoring station measuring wind, ocean currents, temperature and wave characteristics. Three different modelling phases are implemented daily, a nearfield model, a hydrodynamic model and a water quality model. Model output can be used by the New South Wales Environment Protection Authority to predict water quality at ocean beaches and inform the community.  相似文献

Sewage effluent is a powerful agent of ecological change in estuaries. While the effects of sewage pollution on water quality are usually well documented, biological responses of exposed organisms are not. We quantified health impacts in the form of pathological tissue changes across multiple organs in estuarine fish exposed to elevated levels of treated wastewater. Structural pathologies were compared in wild populations of four fish species from two subtropical estuaries on the east coast of Australia that differ substantially in the amount of direct wastewater loadings. Uptake of sewage-derived nitrogen by fish was traced with stable nitrogen isotopes. Pathologies were common in the liver, spleen, gill, kidney and muscle tissues, and included granulomas, melanomacrophage aggregates, and multiple deformities of the gill epithelia. Tissue deformities were more frequent in fish exposed directly to wastewater discharges. Mullet (Valamugil georgii) were most affected, with only a single specimen free of pathologies in the sewage-impacted estuary. Similarly, in those fish that had structural abnormalities, more deformities were generally found in individuals from sites receiving sewage. These spatial contrasts in impaired fish health correspond to significantly enriched delta15N values in fish muscle as a consequence of fish assimilating sewage-N. Overall, the pattern of lower health and enriched delta15N values in fish from sewage-impacted areas suggests that organism health is lowered by sewage inputs to estuaries. Measurements of organism health are required to understand the effects of sewage on estuarine ecosystems, and histopathology of fishes is a powerful tool to achieve this.  相似文献

Successful reproduction and larval dispersal are important for the persistence of marine invertebrate populations, and these early life history processes can be sensitive to marine pollution. Coal is emerging as a contaminant of interest due to the proximity of ports and shipping lanes to coral reefs. To assess the potential hazard of this contaminant, gametes, newly developed embryos, larvae and juveniles of the coral Acropora tenuis were exposed to a range of coal leachate, suspended coal, and coal smothering treatments. Fertilisation was the most sensitive reproductive process tested. Embryo survivorship decreased with increasing suspended coal concentrations and exposure duration, effects on larval settlement varied between treatments, while effects on juvenile survivorship were minimal. Leachate exposures had negligible effects on fertilisation and larval settlement. These results indicate that coral recruitment could be affected by spills that produce plumes of suspended coal particles which interact with gametes and embryos soon after spawning.  相似文献

In 1995, Sydney Water Corporation undertook an ecological and human health risk assessment for 10 sewage treatment plants (STPs) that discharge primary (6 STPs) and secondary (4 STPs) treated effluents into coastal waters in the Sydney and Illawarra regions, NSW, Australia. A program of toxicity testing of effluent from the 10 STPs was undertaken to determine the toxic effects of the effluents and as a weight-of-evidence study for the risk assessment.

Three types of bioassays were used to test multiple samples of effluent from each STP. Tests used were the sea urchin (Heliocidaris tuberculata) fertilization and larval development bioassays and the amphipod (Allorchestes compressa) survival bioassay.

Comparing between STPs, primary treated effluent was slightly more toxic than secondary treated effluent for all three tests. The highest toxicity was recorded for those STPs that use primary treatment and discharge to the shoreline. Comparing between tests, the sea urchin fertilization bioassay was slightly more sensitive than the sea urchin larval development bioassay, with the amphipod survival bioassay being the least sensitive.

This paper will describe the results of this toxicity testing program and discuss the application of the study results as weight-of-evidence for the risk assessment study.  相似文献

This short review summarises the present knowledge on pollutant impacts on marine viruses, virus-host systems and their potential ecological implications. Excess nutrients from sewage and river effluents are a primary cause of marine eutrophication and mucilage formation, often related to the development of large viral assemblages. At the same time, hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyl and pesticides alter ecosystem functioning and can determinate changes in the virus-host interactions, thus increasing the potential of viral infection. All these pollutants might have synergistic effects on the virus-host system and are able to induce prophage, thus increasing the impact of viruses on marine ecosystems.  相似文献

Boundary layers between different environmental compartments represent critical interfaces for biological, chemical and physical processes. The sea-surface microlayer (uppermost 1-1000 microm layer) forms the boundary layer interface between the atmosphere and ocean. Environmental processes are controlled by the SML, and it is known to play a key role in the global distribution of anthropogenic pollutants. Due to its unique chemical composition, the upper organic film of the SML represents both a sink and a source for a range of pollutants including chlorinated hydrocarbons, organotin compounds, petroleum hydrocarbons, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and heavy metals. These pollutants can be enriched in the SML by up to 500 times relative to concentrations occurring in the underlying bulk water column. The SML is also a unique ecosystem, serving as an important habitat for fish eggs and larvae. Concentration ranges and enrichment factors of pollutants in the SML in different areas of the world's oceans have been critically reviewed, together with available toxicity data for marine biota found within the SML. Overall, the SML is highly contaminated in many urban and industrialized areas of the world, resulting in severe ecotoxicological impacts. Such impacts may lead to drastic effects on the marine food web and to fishery recruitment in coastal waters. Studies of the toxicity of fish eggs and larvae exposed to the SML contaminants have shown that the SML in polluted areas leads to significantly higher rates of mortality and abnormality of fish embryos and larvae.  相似文献

Despite that discrete flow features (DFFs, e.g. fractures and faults) are common features in the subsurface, few studies have explored the influence of DFFs on solute plumes in otherwise permeable rocks (e.g. sandstone, limestone), compared to low-permeability rock settings (e.g. granite and basalt). DFFs can provide preferential flow pathways (i.e. ‘preferential flow features’; PFFs), or can act to impede flow (i.e. ‘barrier flow features’; BFFs). This research uses a simple analytical expression and numerical modelling to explore how a single DFF influences the steady-state distributions of solute plumes in permeable aquifers. The analysis quantifies the displacement and widening (or narrowing) of a steady-state solute plume as it crosses a DFF in idealised, 1 × 1 m moderately permeable rock aquifers. Previous research is extended by accounting for DFFs as 2D flow features, and including BFF situations. A range of matrix-DFF permeability ratios (0.01 to 100) and DFF apertures (0.25 mm to 2 cm), typical of sedimentary aquifers containing medium-to-large fractures, are considered. The results indicate that for the conceptual models considered here, PFFs typically have a more significant influence on plume distributions than BFFs, and the impact of DFFs on solute plumes generally increases with increasing aperture. For example, displacement of peak solute concentration caused by DFFs exceeds 20 cm in some PFF cases, compared to a maximum of 0.64 cm in BFF cases. PFFs widen plumes up to 9.7 times, compared to a maximum plume widening of 2.0 times in BFF cases. Plumes crossing a PFF are less symmetrical, and peak solute concentrations beneath PFFs are up to two orders of magnitude lower than plumes in BFF cases. This study extends current knowledge of the attenuating influence of DFFs in otherwise permeable rocks on solute plume characteristics, through evaluation of 2D flow effects in DFFs for a variety of DFF apertures, and by considering BFF situations.  相似文献

A particle transport model is described that is being used to simulate the dispersal of salmon lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) larvae in the waters of Loch Torridon. A hydrodynamic model, forced by tides and winds, drives the transport model. Particle movements are strongly influenced by winds, which can lead to formation of lice concentrations in coastal areas several kilometres from the source. Idealised constant wind simulations have been used to locate areas that larval lice may potentially reach from given source locations. Detailed analysis of simulations forced with real wind data is required to assess areas that larval lice from these sources are likely to reach. Further field and experimental work on the viability of lice is required to assess infection risk.  相似文献

To overcome the problems of beach pollution Sydney Water constructed three deepwater sewage outfalls off North Head, Bondi and Malabar. The outfalls were commissioned over the period September 1990–July 1991. A 5-year multi-disciplinary environmental monitoring programme was set up to assess the impacts on the demersal fish and soft-bottom macro-invertebrate communities. Assessment of impact was based on an asymmetrical analysis of variance which provided an a priori orthogonal contrast between a single outfall and multiple control sites sampled before and after commissioning. Impacts were detected in both communities, included several commercially and recreationally important species of fish, and occurred with the greatest frequency in the soft-bottom community. The results are summarized, and several examples are presented and show that the direction and magnitude of the impacts varied among outfalls and taxa. The results are then discussed in terms of the needs of future monitoring and the implications for the assessment of human-induced impacts in other parts of the world.  相似文献

Bombay harbour is one of the major sinks, on the western peninsula of the Indian subcontinent, receiving anthropogenic pollutants including heavy metals, radionuclides and hydrocarbons in addition to sewage. To evaluate possible impacts of a few heavy metals on the harbour ecosystem, the distribution patterns of Zn, Mn, Cu, Fe, Co, Ni, Cd, Cr, Pb and Sr in water, sediment and two benthic species, the blood clam Anadara granosa and gobiid mudskipper Boleophthalmus boddaerti were studied over the period 1976–1980. The present levels of the ten elements in biotic and abiotic matrices were found to be far below those that are known to affect adversely the life and quality of benthic communities. Furthermore, the concentrations of these elements in various compartments neither revealed any systematic temporal or spatial fluctuations nor reflected the substantial incease in the total budget over the past 8–12 years. Also these levels were within the range reported in the nearshore and oceanic environs along the west coast. In view of this, the poor growth and high percentage mortality observed in the clam Anadara granosa fished from the Sewri clam bed compared to that of the stock harvested from the Trombay region in the harbour may well be due to anoxic conditions caused by organic pollutants present in the domestic sewage and industrial wastes released in the vicinity of the Sewri clam bed.  相似文献

The 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill impacted the northern Gulf of Mexico (GOM) during the spring spawning season of Atlantic bluefin tuna (BFT). Overlap between BFT spawning habitat and surface oil in the northern GOM was examined using satellite-derived estimates of oil coverage, and spawning habitat models. Results suggested that although eggs and larvae were likely impacted by oil-contaminated waters in the eastern GOM, high abundances of larvae were located elsewhere, especially in the western GOM. Overall, less than 10% of BFT spawning habitat was predicted to have been covered by surface oil, and less than 12% of larval BFT were predicted to have been located within contaminated waters in the northern GOM, on a weekly basis. Our results provide preliminary but important initial estimates of the effects of the spill on larval BFT mortality, as concern continues over the appropriate management responses to impacts of the spill.  相似文献

Developmental toxicity tests are often used for the hazard assessment of chemicals and environmental media. One of the most widely used is the oyster embryo larval test (OEL), in which the development of oyster larvae is arrested at a single fixed time (e.g. 24 or 48 h) of toxic exposure, and the proportion of normal larvae measured. However, a major problem with this conventional approach is the lack of information on temporal trends in development. In this study, Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas embryos were exposed to nominal concentrations of copper (CuSO4) of <0.001 (control), 0.60, 1.25, 2.5, 5.0, 10.0 and 20.0 μg l−1 (at 20 °C, salinity 35‰ and pH 8.1). Three replicates from each group were arrested and examined every 8 h during 24–72 h of exposure, and the number of viable larvae developed to D-shape was determined. The results revealed that the number of viable D-shape larvae in the control increased rapidly and reached an optimum at 32 h, before declining gradually due to starvation. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) showed that larval developmental rates during 0–32 h were significantly inhibited by Cu at all concentrations. This paper demonstrates that arrest and measurement at different time periods are important and should be incorporated into the OEL test. This would maximise the sensitivity of the test in detecting developmental effects in spiked or environmental samples.  相似文献

Coastal environments are threatened by the increasing frequency, extent and severity of hypoxic events. Hypoxia affects vast areas around the world and often causes fish kills, reduced abundance, altered distribution, low benthic biomass and declines in fisheries. In Australia, many fisheries are based on sparid fishes and in the southern states black bream (Acanthopagrus butcheri) is important to both the recreational and commercial sectors. This species completes its entire life cycle in estuaries and annual recruitment is highly variable and very likely influenced by environmental conditions during the spawning season. In a laboratory-based experiment, fertilised black bream eggs (embryos) were exposed to five different levels of dissolved oxygen (DO). The DO levels were maintained in small test wells using nitrogen gas in a novel chamber design. Embryo development was assessed over a 2-day period and hatched larvae were observed until Day 2 post-hatch. Significant differences (p<0.05) were observed in embryonic development and survival as a function of DO level. In severely hypoxic conditions (30% saturation) survival to 1 day was reduced and no hatching occurred. In moderately hypoxic conditions (45-55%S), both precocious and delayed hatching was observed and hatch rates were reduced, whilst the number of hatched larvae with deformities increased, resulting in reduced larval lengths. No larvae survived to Day 2 post-hatch when held in hypoxic conditions (<55%S). This study demonstrates the detrimental effect that severe hypoxia can have on the early development of black bream which could result in reduced recruitment and lowered abundance. Other species that share similar early life histories may also be at risk.  相似文献

Since the commissioning of the three major deepwater outfalls in Sydney, there has been a dramatic improvement in general beach water quality at Sydney's ocean beaches. This has required the NSW Environment Protection Authority's Beachwatch Programme to shift from assessing the impacts of gross sewage pollution due to nearshore outfalls to more diffuse pollution from stormwater and sewer overflows.

The visual indicators of gross sewage pollution originally used by Beachwatch for the daily assessment of bacterial water quality are now of limited value. General linear models (with multiple effects) were constructed to identify the secondary indicators which best describe the levels of bacterial contamination due to stormwater pollution. Data from four representative Sydney beaches were modelled separately due to the site-specific effects of pollution sources and hydrodynamics. Factors which were built into the models and were known on the day of prediction were rain amount, presence of stormwater material, the maximum daily stormwater rating, drain or lagoon flows at the time of sampling, and the drain/lagoon bacterial concentration two days before sampling.

Results indicate that there is a general linear relationship between visual indicators and bacterial density; however, the reliability of the prediction on a daily basis is poor and rainfall alone as a predictor is equivalent to or better than visual assessment alone. The primary source of information for the preparation of Beachwatch daily pollution bulletins now is rainfall reports from a telemetered network of rain gauges along the coast. This is a more cost-effective approach and has allowed the reallocation of resources to address more directly the problem of stormwater pollution at higher risk beaches.  相似文献

Inshore coral reefs adjacent to the wet tropics in North Queensland, Australia, are regularly exposed to flood plumes from coastal river systems. Changes in the nature of these plumes have been linked to the declining health of coral reefs in the region. The effect of flood plumes on the health of inshore corals was investigated by quantifying aspects of the demography of populations of corymbose and digitate Acropora at three groups of Island reefs along a gradient of exposure and decreasing water quality (High Island >Frankland's >Fitzroy). The size-structures of colonies, the rates of sexual recruitment, and the growth and survival of juveniles, all varied among the Island reefs. Juvenile and adult sized colonies were far more abundant at the Fitzroy Island reefs, than at the High or Frankland Island reefs that were more exposed to flood plumes. Additionally, there were up to eight times as many sexual recruits at the Fitzroy Island reefs, compared with the High Island reefs. However, the rates of growth and survival of the juvenile sized corals at the Fitzroy Island reefs were lower than at the more exposed reefs. The comparatively low abundance of adult corals at the exposed reefs is most likely due to their histories of disturbance from crown-of-thorns and coral bleaching, but the lack of subsequent recovery due to their low levels of larval recruitment. If a stock-recruitment relationship is typical for these groups of reefs, then the low rates of recruitment may be linked to the low density of adult colonies. Alternately, direct or indirect effects of chronic exposure to poor water quality may have resulted in less suitable substrata for larval settlement. We discuss these results and provide examples of how information about population structure and dynamics can be used in simple matrix models to quantify the current and future health of populations of corals under various scenarios.  相似文献

Surveys of fish larvae and oceanographic conditions were conducted along transects across the shelf break region in the East China Sea (ECS) in May 2001. The objective of this study was to investigate the distribution and assemblages of fish larvae across the shelf break region and their relationships to mesoscale hydrographic features. There was a warm surface streamer from the Kuroshio which extended toward the shelf region of the ECS; concurrently, we observed the intrusion of the less saline shelf water into the subsurface layer towards the offshore. In all 66 taxa (65 families and 1 order) of larvae were collected by oblique net tows using a bongo net, the larval fish density and number of families sampled were lower in the low-temperature area. Based on cluster analysis and environmental factor, two larval fish assemblages were identified: off-shelf/Kuroshio and shelf break. In shelf break assemblage, Auxis spp. and Diaphus spp. were abundant in the warm surface streamer. In contrast, Maurolicus japonicus, Synagrops spp., Bregmaceros sp. and Champsodon spp. were found in the off-shelf region where the offshore intrusion of less-saline water occurred. This different pattern of the horizontal distribution would reflect vertical distribution of the larvae in the water column. Moreover, copepod nauplii density was higher in the upper layer of the shelf region. Thus, dynamic interactions between the Kuroshio and shelf waters at the frontal boundary are concluded to potentially affect larval fish transport and prey availability.  相似文献

The distribution of particulate matter within river channels, including sediments, nutrients and pollutants, is fundamental to the survival of aquatic organisms. However, the interactions between flow and sediment transport at the patch scale of river systems represents an under‐researched component of physical habitat studies, particularly those concerning the characterization of ‘physical biotopes’ (riffles, runs, pools, glides). This paper describes a field methodology for exploring the transfer of particulate matter at small scales within river channels, which may be used to aid hydraulic habitat characterization. The field protocol combines field measurement of high frequency flow properties, to characterize hydraulic habitat units, and deployment of spatial arrays of turbidity probes, to detect the passage of artificially‐induced sediment plumes through different biotope units. Sediment plumes recorded by the probes are analysed quantitatively in the manner of the flood hydrograph, and qualitative inferences are made on the dominant mixing processes operating within different parts of the channel. Relationships between the nature of spatio‐temporal hydraulic variations within glide, riffle and pool biotopes, and the character and mixing behaviour of sediment plumes within these habitat units are identified. Results from these preliminary experiments suggest that investigating and characterizing the transfer and storage of sediments, nutrients and pollutants within and between different biotopes is a viable avenue for further research, with potential to contribute to improved physical habitat characterization for river management and habitat restoration. The drainage channel network in Vojvodina,northern part of the Republic of Serbia,in total length of around 20,000 km,transfers excessive(under)ground waters from around 2.15 million ha of lowlands.Channels are mostly in direct connection with the surrounding arable agricultural land and are exposed to different run-off,leaching and/or wind erosion processes.Close to urban areas,some channel sections serve as recipients of unrefined sewage and industrial waste waters.Water flows and velocities,as well as the transportable capacity of fluvial materials(sediments) are relatively low.This,in combination with other natural and anthropogenic impacts,contributes to sediment generation in the drainage channel network.Based on around 100 sediment samples from 46 channels,concentrations of primary nutrients(N,P and K) were elaborated in this study.Detected concentrations of macronutrients in the channel sediments(e.g.N 1-1.2%,P 100-265 and K 100-380 mg 100 g~(-1)) exceeded their content in surrounding arable land by a few fold.Also,significantly higher nutrient concentrations(in average by 50%) were detected in downstream(vs.upstream) channel sections.An excessive presence of observed elements in channel sediments,due to interactive processes between water and sediment material,can adversely influence the water quality and life conditions for channel biota and caused other negative environmental impacts such as eutrophication.These results clearly confirm that the processes of nutrient accumulation in channel sediments are greater than those in the surrounding,mostly intensively arable land areas.The erosion of unprotected agricultural areas and sediment transport as the most important pollution pathways from the drainage basin to channel network may be essential factors responsible for detected condition of nutrient accumulation.  相似文献

Awareness of antibiotics in wastewaters and aquatic ecosystems is growing as investigations into alternate pollutants increase and analytical techniques for detecting these chemicals improve. The presence of three antibiotics (ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin and cephalexin) was evaluated in both sewage effluent and environmental waters downstream from a sewage discharge. Bacteria cultured from the sewage bioreactor and receiving waters were tested for resistance against six antibiotics (ciprofloxacin, tetracycline, ampicillin, trimethoprim, erythromycin and trimethoprim/sulphamethoxazole) and effects of short term exposure (24 h) to antibiotics on bacterial denitrification rates were examined. Antibiotics were detected entering the sewage treatment plant with varying levels of removal during the treatment process. Antibiotics were also detected in effluent entering receiving waters and detectable 500 m from the source. Among the bacteria cultured from the sewage bioreactor, resistance was displayed against all six antibiotics tested and bacteria cultured from receiving waters were resistant against two of the antibiotics tested. Rates of denitrification were observed to decrease in response to some antibiotics and not to others, though this was only observed at concentrations exceeding those likely to be found in the environment. Findings from this preliminary research have indicated that antibiotics are entering our aquatic systems and pose a potential threat to ecosystem function and potentially human health.  相似文献
