Thermoluminescence, electron paramagnetic resonance and optical absorption properties of rhodonite, a natural silicate mineral, have been investigated and compared to those of synthetic crystal, pure and doped. The TL peaks grow linearly for radiation dose up to 4 kGy, and then saturate. In all the synthetic samples, 140 and 340°C TL peaks are observed; the difference occurs in their relative intensities, but only 340°C peak grows strongly for high doses. Al2O3 and Al2O3 + CaO-doped synthetic samples presented several decades intenser TL compared to that of synthetic samples doped with other impurities. A heating rate of 4°C/s has been used in all the TL readings. The EPR spectrum of natural rhodonite mineral has only one huge signal around g = 2.0 with width extending from 1,000 to 6,000 G. This is due to Mn dipolar interaction, a fact proved by numerical calculation based on Van Vleck dipolar broadening expression. The optical absorption spectrum is rich in absorption bands in near-UV, visible and near-IR intervals. Several bands in the region from 540 to 340 nm are interpreted as being due to Mn3+ in distorted octahedral environment. A broad and intense band around 1,040 nm is due to Fe2+. It decays under heating up to 900°C. At this temperature it is reduced by 80% of its original intensity. The pink, natural rhodonite, heated in air starts becoming black at approximately 600°C.  相似文献

Quaternary tephra of Mt. Osore-zan was dated by electron spin resonance. Quartz grains were separated from the tephra and ESR signals of Al and Ti centres were measured at 77 K. The signals of Al and Ti centres which have a complicated hyperfine structure were simplified by using wider field modulations width (5 gauss) than usually used (0.5–1 gauss). The influence of 5 gauss modulation width on the measurement of the signal intensity of Al and Ti centres was investigated. The intensity of the signal increases linearly with gamma irradiation and total doses obtained were 178 to 273 Gy and ESR ages were 0.19 to 0.32 Ma. These ages agree with the estimated age of about 0.3 Ma from the correlation of volcanic ash and terrace level.  相似文献

电子自旋共振(ESR)是一种对断层物质、燧石、火山灰和沉积物(水系、风成、冰川)定年的重要方法,它广为接受的测年范围为第四纪。对断层泥和沉积物样品,石英ESR信号的不完全归零往往使ESR年龄偏老,多重ESR中心法和颗粒大小“平顶判据”是判断信号归零特征的两种有效方法。为将ESR测年范围拓展至前第四纪,通常采用石英氧空位在加热转化后极大增强的E’心作为测年信号,但由于石英氧空位形成转化机理不明确,加热后增强的ESR信号与地质年龄的相关性有待进一步验证。近期研究表明石英ESR的封闭温度为49 ℃~82 ℃,可在比磷灰石(U-Th)/He更低的温度区间内研究地球近地表的构造演化过程。释光技术热年代学研究发展迅速,与之测年原理接近的ESR在低温热年代学领域展现了良好的应用前景,它与释光及磷灰石(U-Th)/He可相互比对、共同提高地球近地表构造和地形演化问题的分析精度。  相似文献

Fundamental principles of thermoluminescence (TL) and the special role of TL in uranium exploration techniques are given in this paper with examples from Australia illustrating its application.TL can be used in two ways in uranium exploration. The first usage stems from the property of minerals capable of TL, to act as dosimeters accounting for charging of available traps by ionizing radiation. The second usage relates to ionizing radiation interfering with the crystal structure of the host mineral and thereby changing the capability for TL. Studies at the Beverley and Westmoreland uranium deposits utilize this second property.At Beverley a continuous drop in TL intensity is observed upon approaching the orebody with TL intensity at a minimum within the orebody. Recognition of ore type TL glow curves and sensitized (or marginal) TL glow curves within the area surrounding the orebody have enlarged the exploration target beyond that of the orebody and its associated radiometric halo.Traverses examining the variations in glow peak intensities, ratios and temperatures across the Junnagunna orebody at Westmoreland show that the glow peak intensity of the high-temperature glow peak increases, that of the low-temperature peak fluctuates though generally decreases, the high temperature/low-temperature glow peak ratio increases upon approaching the orebody. The high-temperature glow peak temperature is at a minimum within the orebody. Similar variations detected nearby may indicate further potential exploration sites.An example from an unmineralized area at Bremer River has indicated a lack of widespread radiation sensitization indicating the unsuitability of the area for economic uranium accumulation.  相似文献

This study explored the relationship between high-Arctic fiord depositional environments and the natural thermoluminescence (TL) signal of sediments. The energy and duration of light exposure during transportation and deposition controls the TL level of silicate mineral grains in the sediment. The TL signal of sediments rapidly decreases within c. 0·5 km of a glacier sediment source. The highest TL levels are from tills and ice-proximal glacial-marine sediments, which receive little or no light exposure during transportation and deposition. Intermediate and consistent TL levels are recorded for ice-distal glacialmarine muds, c. 0·5–5·0 km from the glacier front, reflecting slower sedimentation rates. The lowest TL levels are for littoral and sublittoral sediments which receive extended light exposure with shoaling. The granulometry of the sediments is fairly homogeneous and is not diagnostic of a sedimentary environment with most samples dominated by silt and clay; littoral and ice-proximal samples exhibit peak abundances in sand. These results suggest that the relative TL signal of sediments is sensitive to a depositional environment, particularly for environments proximal (within 0·5 km) to a glacier terminus and in shallow water, less than 15 m deep.  相似文献

Natural hydrothermal ZnCO3 crystal aggregates are nominally anhydrous phases with interfacial water, with substitutional divalent cations and decarbonation c. 300°C. All these common features must be involved during the experimental heating of a thermoluminescence (TL) glow curve up to 500°C: dehydration–dehydroxylation, phase transition and ion transition of point defects in Zn2+ positions. A representative specimen of natural smithsonite was analysed by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) with a chemical probe of energy dispersive spectrometer, high temperature in situ X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, differential thermal analyses coupled to thermogravimetry, TL, radioluminescence and high resolution spectra thermoluminescence (3DTL), to gain an overview of the spectra emission and defects linkages modified by heating from room temperature up to 500°C. The ZnCO3 specimen contains minor amounts of Ca, Cu, Cr, Cd, Pb, Ce, Co, Ni, Mn and Fe. Under FESEM, it displays CaCO3 clusters and oscillatory zoning distribution with lamellae ranging from Ca0.11Zn0.89 to Ca0.19Zn0.81. The analytical results suggest assignments of defects and processes to measured 3DTL emission bands, as follows: (1) peak at ~260°C, ~360 nm bonds, breaking during the thermal decarbonation process; (2) peak ~120°C, ~340 nm: non-bridging oxygen centres associated to a complex dehydration–dehydroxylation process and (3) peak at ~170°C, ~650 nm, crystal field effects on the thermoluminescence of Mn2+ centres and associated transitional elements in the ZnCO3 phase. 电子自旋共振(ESR)是一种利用矿物在地质环境中的累计辐射能进行测年的技术方法,它采用的测年矿物石英广泛分布,并具有记录断层作用良好的计时零点,是同位素测年的重要补充。ESR信号强度是决定ESR年龄精确度的关键因素,但是各种参数条件对测量结果的影响方式及其程度缺乏系统研究。本文以取自断层带石英的一种顺磁中心——E’心为研究对象,运用单因素重复性实验方法,分析石英ESR定年中5种影响因素与ESR信号强度的相关关系。结果表明,微波功率、调制幅度、扫描宽度是影响ESR信号强度的主控因素,样品管方位及直径对测量结果影响不大。微波功率0.02~0.1 m W、调制幅度0.25~0.4 Gs可作为精确测量断层泥石英E’心普适性的参数区间,过大或过小的扫描宽度均不利于ESR测量,可利用在大扫描宽度条件下先预扫描再精细扫描的方法确定合适的扫描宽度,重复测量后求取平均值可有效降低测量误差。利用本文提出的参数区间及其确定的方法测量断层泥石英的E’心信号强度,能显著提高ESR测量精度。  相似文献

A new technique is described in which the natural thermoluminescence (TL) in chondritic meteorites is normalized to the TL sensitivity of each meteorite. The relationship between the normalized TL level and a meteorite's terrestrial age is examined. The average normalized TL level measured in 45 ordinary chondrites of known terrestrial age decreases with increasing terrestrial age. There is a factor of ten variation in the TL levels of fresh falls which is primarily due to differences in orbital temperatures (Melcher, 1981). Nevertheless, it is possible to distinguish between recent falls and meteorites greater than a few hundred years old if they have been stored at the same temperature. The decay characteristics of the TL are studied by means of initial rise experiments and isothermal decay experiments at elevated temperatures. The TL levels of 11 Antarctic meteorites are compared with the results of 14C, 26Al and 36Cl studies of the terrestrial ages of these objects. There is a rough correlation between the low temperature TL levels and the radionuclide activities. Since the TL method is quick and requires as little as 10mg of material, it is most valuable as a rapid screening process to select samples appropriate for study by other techniques.  相似文献

Signal resetting by sunlight prior to burial is a crucial assumption in electron spin resonance (ESR) dating of sediments. This resetting process is expected to be completed to a greater extent in arid than in fluvial environments. The present paper investigates the natural and artificially irradiated signal intensity of Ti related centres in single quartz grains collected from the desert surface (Eastern Desert, Egypt) in order to test this hypothesis. The results suggest that in most grains both the Ti–Li and Ti–H signal are completely reset to zero. Additive dose curves based on the sum of both Ti centres show an anomaly in the low dose region. Possible causes for this behaviour are briefly discussed. Three fitting procedures are conducted and each of them shows a different palaeodose distribution with a rather large spread in DE values. It is concluded that similar fossil deposits would be datable by single grain ESR using Q-band measurements of the Ti–Li or Ti–H signals in quartz.  相似文献

Fractionation by ultra-filtration of the dissolved organic material (DOM) in the River Beaulieu, with typical concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) of 7–8 mg C/l, showed it to be mainly in the nominal molecular weight range of 103–105, with 16–23% of the total DOC in the fraction > 105. The molecular weight distribution of DOM in the more alkaline River Test (average DOC, 2 mg C/l) was similar. In the River Beaulieu water, containing 136–314 βg Fe/l in ‘dissolved’ forms, 90% or more of this Fe was in the nominal molecular weight fraction > 105. Experiments showed that DOM of nominal molecular weight <105 could stabilize Fe(III) in ‘dissolved’ forms. The concentrations of ‘dissolved’ Fe in the river water probably reflect the presence of colloidal Fe stabilized by organic material and this process may influence the apparent molecular weight of the DOM. Dissolved. Mn (100–136 βg/l) in the River Beaulieu was mainly in true solution, probably as Mn(II), with some 30% in forms of molecular weight greater than ca 104.During mi xing in the Beaulieu Estuary, DOC and dissolved Mn behave essentially conservatively. This contrasts with the removal of a large fraction of the dissolved Fe (Holliday and LISS, 1976, Est. Coastal Mar. Sci. 4, 349–353). Concentrations of lattice-held Fe and Mn in suspended particulate material were essentially uniform in the estuary, at 3.2 and 0.012%, respectively, whereas the non-lattice held fractions decreased markedly with increase in salinity. For Mn the decrease was linear and could be most simply accounted for by the physical mixing of riverborne and marine participates, although the possibility that some desorption occurs is not excluded. The non-linear decrease in the concentration of non-lattice held Fe in particulates reflected the more complex situation in which physical mixing is accompanied by removal of material from the ‘dissolved’ fraction.  相似文献

测定了我国部分球粒陨石的自然热释光峰温、峰半高宽度和灵敏度, 强冲击型陨石的热释光灵敏度偏低,峰温、峰半高宽温度则偏高。岩庄陨石属天然冲击球粒陨石,具有强烈的冲击特征。测定岩庄陨石两种不同颜色冲击脉体的热释光,其强度明显地不一样,并发现该陨石的热释光具有β辐照诱发热释光位移和退火热释光位移现象。冲击作用明显地改变着热释光的各种特性。  相似文献

Thermoluminescence (TL) of monomineralic separates have been widely used in various geosciences fields in order to trace the thermal history and aid in prospecting for gold deposits. Quartz is a ubiquitous mineral in the Shihu gold deposit, which is situated in the northern part of the Taihang orogenic belt in the North China craton (NCC). The deposit is hosted by ductile-brittle faults within an Archean metamorphic core complex of the Fuping Group. This deposit is characterized by gold-bearing quartz-polymetallic sulfides and quartz veins. New TL results have been obtained for quartz, in which four type-TL glow curves were identified. The gold-bearing quartz present type III glow curves that consist of two peak glow curves at the middle and high peak temperatures with the similar TL intensity. In addition, the cross-sections of peak temperatures and TL intensity highlight the valuable area where the Au-bearing quartz present weak TL intensity and low-middle peak temperatures. Our results significantly enhance the usefulness of quartz in metallogenic studies of the North China craton and as an indicator mineral in mineral exploration of the Taihang Mountain region.  相似文献

In optically stimulated luminescence dating, apparent ages of individual grains are thought to reflect a wide distribution of initial bleaching levels in hard to bleach sediments. Although having a larger age range (up to 1 Ma and beyond), this approach has not been used yet in electron spin resonance (ESR) dating. Here we report on the first results of ESR measurements on single sedimentary quartz grains. Initial bleaching levels are evaluated for two different River Meuse deposits in Limburg, NE Belgium. Measurements were done with a Q-band ESR spectrometer on transparent quartz grains of sufficiently large diameter (0.5–0.7 mm). Single crystal ESR properties were used to identify different ESR active centres. In about 50% of the selected grains an Al and/or Ti–Li signal was detected and the latter has been selected for further measurements. Artificial bleaching experiments show a strong signal decrease with UV light exposure. After gamma-ray irradiation, a number of different signal intensity vs. artificial dose curves could be observed: exponential growth, exponential saturation, linear, with inflexion points, and unclear ones. Many grains show increasing ESR signals with doses up to 1000 Gy, suggesting that the age range could be extended over 1 Ma, covering the Middle Pleistocene and part of the Early Pleistocene. Accumulated doses of individual grains were calculated using the additive dose method. The results show a large dose distribution of individual grains for both deposits. It is concluded that insufficiently bleached grains can be detected using single grain ESR measurements of sedimentary quartz in a fluvial environment.  相似文献

热释光的用途很广,但在判断火山活动旋回(期次)以及火山岩类型鉴定方面,尚未涉及。本文通过对大庆徐家围子升深7和杨参1井岩石样品以及其他井部分火山岩样品的热释光特征的研究,发现:①升深7井中,顶部峰型和总积分强度近似,可指示为同期喷发产物;中下部热释光特征表现为“顶底韵律效应”,可能是较晚阶段的火山喷发物对前一阶段顶部有热改造而消耗了部分辐射积累。②杨参1井中根据热释光特征可划分2个旋回和4个期次。下部旋回发育双峰,主峰积分强度差别较大,可能指示底部为多源喷出产物(如多机构产物)混堆,小旋回产物之间叠加;主峰积分强度从下到上依次减小,反映了火山岩喷发强度的降低。上部旋回发育单峰,热释光积分强度相差不大,可能为一套同源产物。③升深7井中未发生明显蚀变作用的安山岩热释光特征相似而杨参1井中岩相均一、未蚀变的凝灰质岩热释光特征也很相似,这表明热释光特征技术应用于火山空落相岩石和火山熔岩岩性判别是有可能的。最后总结了火山岩热释光研究应注意的问题。  相似文献

Auto-regenerative dating of zircon grains from fired materials has been shown to be a very powerful technique. The high internal dose rate in zircon gives a measurable auto-regenerated TL signal a few months after the natural TL measurement, allowing the determination of age without dosimetry. The technique has been extended to zircon grains from sediments, using optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) techniques to measure the natural signal. The auto-regenerated signal is only a few hundred photons and cannot be measured above background using present OSL techniques, so it is counted using the highly sensitive TL reader developed for fired zircon grains. Preliminary measurements on fired zircons are in good accord with TL dating and the known ages, but precision becomes poor for samples <1 ka in age. Possible improvements using auto-regenerative phototransfer TL dating are discussed.  相似文献

Compositional maps of orthopyroxene and garnet of contrasting grain size and in contact with different minerals were made from two paragneiss granulites from the Minto terrane of northern Quebec. The compositional maps provide clear evidence of late exchange of Fe/(Fe + Mg) after Ca in garnet and Al in orthopyroxene had been quenched-in. The extent of late Fe-Mg exchange was controlled by neighbouring minerals, with negligible Fe-Mg gradients against plagioclase and quartz, and substantial gradients against exchangeable Fe-Mg minerals. Cores of grains in contact with exchangeable Fe-Mg neighbours are progressively more reset in Fe/(Fe + Mg) as grain size decreases, whereas cores of even small grains surrounded by only plagioclase and quartz are not significantly different in Fe/(Fe + Mg) than cores of the largest grains. Gradients of Ca in garnet and of Al in orthopyroxene in grains of uniform Fe/(Fe + Mg) preserve a high-temperature retrograde history during which intergranular exchange effected compositional uniformity of mineral rims and intragranular Fe-Mg diffusion in garnet and orthopyroxene was rapid enough to homogenize Fe/(Fe + Mg). The transition from efficient intergranular exchange at relatively high temperatures to local Fe-Mg exchange at lower temperatures may have been controlled by loss of an intergranular exchange medium in the rock, possibly an internally generated dehydration melt phase. Implications for geothermometry of granulites include the following (numerical values are particular to this study): (1) core compositions of garnet and orthopyroxene grains in contact with exchangeable neighbours may be reset in Fe/(Fe + Mg) relative to the most refractory compositions by an amount equivalent to 120d? C; (2) Fe-Mg exchange thermometry using even the most refractory Fe/(Fe + Mg) compositions may not record peak granulite conditions, possibly recording instead the temperature at which an intergranular exchange medium was lost from the rock; and (3) temperature-sensitive net transfer equilibria involving Al solubility in orthopyroxene yield temperatures up to 150d? C higher than maximum Fe-Mg exchange temperatures, even in grains with flat Fe/(Fe - Mg) compositional profiles, making them a better means of estimating peak granulite temperatures than Fe-Mg exchange thermometry.  相似文献

Thermoluminescence sensitivity measurements have been made on 18 unequilibrated ordinary chondrites; 12 finds from Antarctica, 5 non-Antarctic finds and 1 fall. The TL sensitivities of these meteorites, normalized to Dhajala, range from 0.034 (St. Mary's County) to 2.3 (Allan Hills A78084), and, based primarily on these data, petrologic type assignments range from 3.3 (St. Mary's County) to 3.9 (Allan Hills A78084). Although the very low levels of metamorphism experienced by types 3.0 to ~3.4 evidently cause large changes in TL sensitivity, the new data demonstrate that they are unable to cause any appreciable homogenization of silicate compositions. We have therefore slightly revised the silicate heterogeneity ranges corresponding to the lower petrologic types.We have discovered that the temperature of maximum TL emission and the broadness of the major TL peak, vary systematically with TL sensitivity; as TL increases these parameters first decrease and then increase. Several mechanisms which could account, partially or completely, for the relationship between TL sensitivity and metamorphism are discussed. Those which involve the formation of feldspar—the TL phosphor in equilibrated meteorites—seem to be consistent with the trends in peak temperature and peak width since experiments on terrestrial albite show that the TL peak broadens and moves to higher temperatures as the stable form changes from the low (ordered) state to the high (disordered) state. (The post-metamorphism equilibration temperature of type ~3.5 meteorites would then correspond to the transformation temperature for the high to low form of meteorite feldspar.) Other factors which may be involved are obscuration of the TL by carbonaceous material, changes in the composition of the phosphor and changes in the identity of the phosphor.  相似文献

Fe released into solution is isotopically lighter (enriched in the lighter isotope) than hornblende starting material when dissolution occurs in the presence of the siderophore desferrioxamine mesylate (DFAM). In contrast, Fe released from goethite dissolving in the presence of DFAM is isotopically unchanged. Furthermore, Δ56Fesolution-hornblende for Fe released to solution in the presence of ligands varies with the affinity of the ligand for Fe. The extent of isotopic fractionation of Fe released from hornblende also increases when experiments are agitated continuously. The Fe isotope fractionation observed during hornblende dissolution with organic ligands is attributed predominantly to retention of 56Fe in an altered surface layer, while the lack of isotopic fractionation during goethite dissolution in DFAM is consistent with the lack of an altered layer. When a siderophore-producing soil bacterium is added to the system (without added organic ligands), Fe released to solution from both hornblende and goethite differs isotopically from Fe in the bulk mineral: Δ56Fesolution-starting material = −0.56 ± 0.19 (hornblende) and −1.44 ± 0.16 (goethite). Increased isotopic fractionation is attributed in this case to the fact that as bacterial respiration depletes the system in oxygen and aqueous Fe is reduced, equilibration between aqueous ferrous and ferric iron creates a pool of isotopically heavy ferric iron that is assimilated by bacterial cells. Adsorption of isotopically heavy ferrous iron (Fe(II) enriched in the heavier isotope) or precipitation of isotopically heavy Fe minerals may also contribute to observed fractionations.To test whether these Fe isotope signatures are recorded in natural systems, we also investigated extractions of samples of soils from which the bacteria were isolated. These extractions show variability in the isotopic signatures of exchangeable Fe and Fe oxyhydroxide fractions from one soil sample to another, but exchangeable Fe is observed to be lighter than Fe in soil Fe oxyhydroxides and hornblende. This observation is consistent with isotopically light Fe-organic complexes in soil pore water derived from the Fe-silicate starting materials in the presence of growing microorganisms, as documented in experiments reported here. The contributions from phenomena including organic ligand-promoted nonstoichiometric dissolution of Fe silicates, uptake of ferric iron by organisms, adsorption of isotopically heavy ferrous iron, and precipitation of iron minerals should create complex isotopic signatures in soils. Better understanding of these processes and the timescales over which they contribute to fractionation is needed.  相似文献

Samples of a type 3.4 chondrite have been annealed at 400–1000°C for 1–200 hours, their thermoluminescence properties determined and analyzed for K, Na, Mn, Sc and Ca by instrumental neutron activation analysis. After annealing at ?900°C, the samples showed a 50% decrease in TL sensitivity, while after annealing at 1000°C it fell to 0.1-0.01 times its unannealed value and loss of Na and K occurred. The TL and compositional changes resemble those observed for the equilibrated Kernouve chondrite after similar annealing treatments, except that the sharp TL decrease, and element loss, occurred at ~ 1100°C; this difference is presumably due to petrographic differences in the feldspar of the two meteorites. The temperature and the width of the TL peak showed a discontinuous increase after annealing at 800°C; peak temperature jumped from 130 to 200°C and peak width increased from 90 to 150°C. The activation energies for these TL changes are 7–10 kcal/mole. Similar increases in the TL peak temperature have been reported in TL studies of Amelia, VA, albite, where they were associated with the low to high-temperature transformation. However, the activation energy for the transformation is ~80 kcal/mole. These changes in TL emission characteristics resemble trends observed in type 3 ordinary chondrites and it is suggested that type 3.3–3.5 chondrites have a low-feldspar as TL phosphor and > 3.5 have high-feldspar as the phosphor. Thermoluminescence therefore provides a means of palaeothermometry for type 3 ordinary chondrites.  相似文献
