Abstract

As part of the Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment, Canadian global spectral forecast model predictions of surface water and energy fluxes over the Mackenzie River basin are examined. Two nine‐member ensemble forecasts of one month duration are produced with the operational model, for a spring and a summer case, at a horizontal resolution of about 100 km (T95). The sensitivity to initial conditions is measured by the degree to which the individual forecasts in the ensembles vary one from another. The evolution in time of this estimated error (ensemble standard deviation) is determined for the surface energy and water accumulations, averaged over the basin. For comparison the calculations are repeated for the Mississippi basin and over North America. The greatest sensitivity is found for the net accumulation of precipitation minus evaporation. The spring ensemble is redone at a coarser horizontal resolution (T47), and the results are similar. The forecast uncertainty (ensemble standard deviation) of the area‐averages over the basin appear to be unaffected by this change, although the ensemble mean values are sensitive to the change in resolution. The ensemble standard deviation makes a significant, abrupt increase toward the end of the second week into the forecasts. This investigation suggests a need for an improved model, if the forecasts’ useful range is to extend to one month. Available upgrades to the land‐surface, precipitation and evaporation schemes will be used in subsequent work, and the forecasts reported here will serve as a baseline for comparison.  相似文献

利用2019年夏季(6—8月)西南复杂地形区地面观测站逐时和逐日降水量观测数据,从降水量和降水频率入手,对同期GRAPES-Meso 3 km业务模式短期(36 h以内)降水预报性能,特别是在不同典型地貌区—四川盆地子区、云贵高原北部子区和南部子区、青藏高原东缘山地子区的预报偏差进行细致评估与分析。结果表明:(1)GRAPES-Meso 3 km模式能合理地刻画出西南复杂地形区夏季日降水和日内尺度降水的主要特征,以及小时降水频次-强度的基本关系。(2)在各子区,模式日降水量(频率)预报表现为清晰的正偏差,正偏差在盆地子区最显著,为观测值的1.1倍(0.3倍);日降水量正偏差主要由强降水日降水量预报偏大引起,但频率正偏差在云贵高原南、北子区与其他两个子区不同,主要是中小雨日数预报偏多的贡献;强降水(中小雨)落区预报存在明显(轻微)偏大倾向,强降水预报落区偏大频率在青藏高原东缘山地子区最高,达82.8%,在云贵高原南部子区最低,为53.6%。(3)日循环上,各时次小时降水量(频率)预报整体偏大,且主要正偏差出现在观测的夜雨峰值时段,其中海拔1200 m以下区域的降水频率正偏差从夜间峰值区延续到中午,模式偏强的日降水量预报往往表现为日内偏长的降水时长或小时降水空报。(4)诊断分析显示,模式在四川盆地区突出的夏季日降水预报正偏差是模式对流层低层在云贵高原南-东南侧偏强的西南风预报与西南地区特殊地形结合的产物。   相似文献

We have derived a water mass model for the Strait of Sicily, based on 1994 and 1995 cruise data. The model consists of seven water masses, suggested by the measured shapes of the vertical temperature and salinity distributions. The core of the Atlantic water is distributed below the surface as a shallow layer, in a depth range of 40 to 100 m, with a salinity minimum. It is capped by upper and surface layers above and a mixed region below. At the bottom, Levantine water is present with a transition region above. Between the mixed and transition region there is, on occasion, a fresher water layer. The structure and statistics of water masses is analyzed over the Strait of Sicily region in terms of their temperature, salinity, and depth values. Objective analysis of the temperature, salinity, and depth parameters is performed in latitude and longitude. The water masses are tracked in terms of their parameter signatures. Changes in temperature and salinity distributions are interpreted. 2-D ellipses that represent the water masses, in terms of means and standard deviation, are derived in a space of temperature, salinity, and depth. Their axes are the standard deviations of parameter space ranges. The areas of the ellipses are compared against the temperature and salinity data distribution. The water mass composition ratios are computed and analyzed. Hypotheses and mechanisms for the origin and mixing of water masses are suggested.  相似文献

A mesoscale boundary-layer model (BLM) is used for running 12-h low-level wind forecasts for the La Plata River region. Several experiments are performed with different boundary conditions that include operational forecasts of the Eta/CPTEC model, local observations, as well as a combination of both. The BLM wind forecasts are compared to the surface wind observations of five weather stations during the period November 2003–April 2004. Two accuracy measures are used: the hit rate or percentage of cases with agreement in the wind direction sector, and the root-mean-squared error (RMSE) of the horizontal wind components. The BLM surface wind forecasts are always more accurate, since its averaged hit rate is three times greater and its averaged RMSE is one half smaller than the Eta forecasts. Despite the large errors in the surface winds displayed by the Eta forecasts, its 850 hPa winds and surface temperature forecasts are able to drive the BLM model to obtain surface winds forecasts with smaller errors than the Eta model. An additional experiment demonstrates that the advantage of using the BLM model for forecasting low-level winds over the La Plata River region is the result of a more appropriate definition of the land–river surface temperature contrast. The particular formulation that the BLM model has for the geometry of the river coasts is fundamental for resolving the smaller scale details of the low-level local circulation. The main conclusion of the study is that operational low-level wind forecasts for the La Plata River region can be improved by running the BLM model forced by the Eta operational forecasts. L. A semi‐implicit barotropic primitive equations model is integrated over a limited area with time dependent boundary conditions using the standard mesh and a finer mesh. Following a theorem by Charney, a minimum number of variables are specified as boundary conditions for the limited area integrations in order to avoid mathematical over‐specification. The comparison of coarse mesh limited area forecasts with the corresponding forecasts made over a much larger domain demonstrates that the essential features, namely the Rossby type perturbations, are handled almost perfectly. The fine mesh forecasts over the same limited area are also very good. Finally, the effect of specifying inaccurate boundary conditions, in the form of twelve‐hour forecasts, is briefly illustrated.  相似文献

The interaction between radiation and turbulence in the stable boundary layer over land is explored using an idealized model, with a focus on the surface layer after the evening transition. It is shown that finer vertical resolution is required in transitional boundary layers than in developed ones. In very light winds radiative cooling determines the temperature profile, even if similarity functions without a critical Richardson number are used; standard surface similarity theory applied over thick layers then yields poor forecasts of near-surface air temperatures. These points are illustrated with field data. Simulations of the developing nocturnal boundary layer are used to explore the wider role of radiation. Comparatively, radiation is less significant within the developed stable boundary layer than during the transition; although, as previous studies have found, it remains important towards the top of the stable layer and in the residual layer. Near the ground, reducing the surface emissivity below one is found to yield modest relative radiative warming rather than intense cooling, which reduces the potential importance of radiation in the developed surface layer. The profile of the radiative heating rate may be strongly dependent on other processes, leading to quite varied behaviour.  相似文献

对罕见极端高影响天气,既使一个模式有能力预报它,其数值预报也至少有以下难点:一是有多大把握确定所预报的天气是极端事件?二是其具体的定时、定量、定点预报可靠吗?本文介绍了集合预报和气候资料相结合的 “集合异常预报法”,并通过北京2012年7月21日(7.21)特大暴雨事件揭示出“集合异常预报法”和集合预报可以提供比单一模式预报更可靠和更准确的信息,从而可有效地缓解上述两大难点。作者建议中央气象台和其他有条件的台站可采用这种办法提高重大灾害性天气的预报能力。文中具体讨论了如下三方面:(1)标准化异常度(SA)的定义以及它同集合预报相结合提高对罕见极端高影响天气预报的可靠性,并由此可导出一个“社会影响矩阵”来定量地表达一个预报对社会的潜在影响;(2)利用集合预报,特别是多模式集合预报可以克服单一模式前后预报的跳跃性或不连续性问题,由此可延长实际可预报时效,如北京7.21事件超过100 mm大暴雨的实际可预报时效提前了2天;(3)SA还有助于认识异常天气发生的原因:从SA的分布看,造成北京7.21 大暴雨事件的短期天气尺度背景因素是从西北方向移来的冷锋和台风倒槽的相遇;从SA的演变看,该事件的中期大背景因素是在北京东北方向有阻塞高压发展并导致北京以西地区的低槽加强和发展(地面强冷空气堆积),在高纬度形成了一个高、低压系统相间的波列,发展并维持,同时诱导热带系统北进。  相似文献

通用线性模型是一个气象水文预报后处理的统计模型。它能消除水文模型流量模拟中的偏差,保留了原始预报的技巧,并且能产生可靠的水文集合预报。本文试验中利用通用线性模型对取自于国际模型参数估计试验数据库的日流量模拟数据进行校正,并与实况观测作比较,检验通用线性模型降低误差的性能。结果表明:通用线性模型产生的流量集合预报的连续分级概率评分分值都在0.5分以下,证明集合预报结果是可靠的;校正后的模拟值在平均值、标准差、均方根误差等检验指标方面都比原始模拟更加接近于实际观测值;即使是对于误差较小的水文模拟,通用线性模型仍有对其进行改善的能力。  相似文献

利用CMA-SH9模式逐小时降水预报数据和地面自动站-CMORPH卫星融合降水数据,开展该模式对2020年暖季(5~9月)川渝地区降水日变化的预报效果评估。结果表明:CMA-SH9模式可以再现小时平均降水量在四川盆地偏小、盆地周边陡峭地形处偏大的空间分布特征;显著的预报正偏差分布于青藏高原东坡至四川盆地西南部一带和四川盆地以东地区,偏差来自降水频率和降水强度的共同贡献;预报负偏差分布于四川盆地,主要来自模式对降水强度的低估;降水日变化峰值时间自西向东呈午夜到上午的滞后,模式预报的降水日变化峰值时间超前于观测;模式能够较好地把握青藏高原东坡至四川盆地西南部一带和四川盆地的单峰型日变化位相,以及盆地以东地区的双峰型日变化位相,但预报的降水量值和观测存在一定偏差。   相似文献

根据四川区域暴雨的定义,筛选2012~2016年的区域暴雨过程,选取850hPa的比湿(q)、850hPa经向风(v)2个因子,并应用NCEP资料计算30年的气候平均值和气候标准差,引入集合预报资料,计算四川暴雨个例各要素的标准化异常度和异常度概率。得到以下结论:(1)850hPa的比湿(q)、850hPa经向风(v)两个因子的48h集合最大预报异常度对四川盆东型暴雨更为适用,实况50mm以上降水落区一般都发生在850hPa比湿(经向风)异常度大值区,而对盆西型暴雨适用性不好;(2)在四川盆东型暴雨中,60%暴雨个例的实况暴雨中心,850hPa上比湿超出气候平均1个标准差的概率达到80%以上,超出1.5个标准差的概率到达50%以上。   相似文献

It is often assumed that weather regimes adequately characterize atmospheric circulation variability. However, regime classifications spanning many months and with a low number of regimes may not satisfy this assumption. The first aim of this study is to test such hypothesis for the Euro-Atlantic region. The second one is to extend the assessment of sub-seasonal forecast skill in predicting the frequencies of occurrence of the regimes beyond the winter season. Two regime classifications of four regimes each were obtained from sea level pressure anomalies clustered from October to March and from April to September respectively. Their spatial patterns were compared with those representing the annual cycle. Results highlight that the two regime classifications are able to reproduce most part of the patterns of the annual cycle, except during the transition weeks between the two periods, when patterns of the annual cycle resembling Atlantic Low regime are not also observed in any of the two classifications. Forecast skill of Atlantic Low was found to be similar to that of NAO+, the regime replacing Atlantic Low in the two classifications. Thus, although clustering yearly circulation data in two periods of 6 months each introduces a few deviations from the annual cycle of the regime patterns, it does not negatively affect sub-seasonal forecast skill. Beyond the winter season and the first ten forecast days, sub-seasonal forecasts of ECMWF are still able to achieve weekly frequency correlations of r = 0.5 for some regimes and start dates, including summer ones. ECMWF forecasts beat climatological forecasts in case of long-lasting regime events, and when measured by the fair continuous ranked probability skill score, but not when measured by the Brier skill score. Thus, more efforts have to be done yet in order to achieve minimum skill necessary to develop forecast products based on weather regimes outside winter season.

为了进一步提高GRAPES_Meso的分析和预报效果,该文在GRAPES_Meso三维变分同化系统中建立了同化GNSS/RO反演的大气资料的观测算子,实现了对GNSS/RO反演的大气资料的同化应用,并通过2013年7月1个月的同化和预报试验分析了GNSS/RO反演大气资料对GRAPES_Meso模式系统分析和预报的影响。结果表明:增加了GNSS/RO反演大气资料的同化后,GRAPES_Meso位势高度场的分析误差明显减小,平均分析误差减小约8%,预报误差略有减小,平均预报误差减小约1%;湿度场的分析误差和预报误差变化不明显,常规观测资料稀少的青藏高原地区的降水预报技巧有所提高,小雨到大雨的ETS (equitable threat score) 评分提高约0.01,对全国及其他分区的降水预报技巧总体上有正效果。  相似文献

For a century or so, the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) has been providing temperature forecast for the whole of Hong Kong with the HKO Headquarters as the reference location. In recent decades, due to spreading of population from the main urban center to satellite towns, there is an increasing demand for regional temperature forecasts. To support such provision, the HKO has developed a regression model to provide objective guidance to forecasters in formulating forecasts of maximum and minimum temperatures for the next day at various locations in Hong Kong. In this paper, the regression model is presented, together with the assessment of its performance. Based on the verification of one year of forecasts, it is found that the root mean square errors (RMSEs) of maximum (minimum) temperature forecasts are from about 1.3 to 2.1 (1.1 to 1.4) degrees, respectively. The regression model is shown to have generally out-performed the operational regional spectral model then operated by HKO. Regional temperature forecast methods of other meteorological or research centers are also surveyed. Equipped with the regression model, the HKO has launched an online regional temperature forecast service for the next day in Hong Kong since March 2008.  相似文献

通过对1614号超强台风“莫兰蒂”在浙江沿海降水预报偏小的原因进行回顾,同时基于美国NOAA HYSPLIT4模式,对“莫兰蒂”水汽来源进行轨迹聚类,针对不同路径来源的水汽在“莫兰蒂”浙江沿海降水中的贡献差异进行定量分析,结果表明:数值模式对“莫兰蒂”路径预报偏西、降水预报偏小,直接影响了主观预报服务中降水强度和落区的判断,而数值产品对中纬度环流作用和浙江沿海台风倒槽的预报出现偏差,同时对1616号台风“马勒卡”路径预报偏东,导致主观预报忽略了“莫兰蒂”与其他天气系统的相互作用,影响了对降水动力和水汽因子的判断,也是降水预报偏小的原因之一。“莫兰蒂”水汽输送有3支气流,分别来自东北、东南和偏南洋(海)面,后2支气流为主要水汽来源,浙北沿海以东南向水汽输送最重要,对水汽和降水贡献高达70%以上,表现出1616号台风“马勒卡”对“莫兰蒂”在浙北沿海降水的重要作用,而浙南沿海台风本体的偏南气流与“马勒卡”的东南气流的水汽输送作用相当。可见台风降水预报中,需要密切关注台风环流与其它天气系统以及双台风间的相互作用。   相似文献

The statistical scheme is proposed for the forecast of surface air temperature and humidity using operative weather forecasts with 3–5-day lead time from the best forecasting hydrodynamic models as well as the archives of forecasts of these models and observational data from 2800 weather stations of Russia, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia. The output of the scheme includes the forecasts of air temperature for the standard observation moments with the period of 6 hours and extreme temperatures with the lead times of 12–120 hours. The accuracy of temperature and humidity forecasts for the period from July 2014 till June 2017 is much higher than that for the forecasts of original hydrodynamic models. The skill scores for extreme temperature forecasts based on the proposed method are compared with the similar results of the Weather Element Computation (WEC) forecasting scheme and forecasts by weathermen.  相似文献

为了实现对中尺度模式降水预报产品的合理化统计检验,在我国现有观测系统条件下,研究了24小时加密降水观测实况对降水统计检验评分的影响。过去的标准检验系统观测站为400站,分为9个区,目前业务试运行的加密检验系统采用的观测站为2510站,分为33个区。同时对国外常用的统计检验量ETS评分进行了初步的研究。通过对2005年7—8月我国近年来引进或自主发展的T213L31、HLAFS25、MM5、MESO-GRAPES60km和30km模式,WRF20km模式,以及日本及德国的全球模式的降水预报产品的统计学检验,主要得到如下结论:(1)加密检验系统和标准检验系统在站点分布和分区形式上有较大的差别,新旧检验系统对各模式和预报员全国降水预报的评估结论在大雨以下各级降水评估方面差别不大,结论基本相似,除中雨预报外,加密系统的TS评分均略低于标准检验的结果。暴雨以上评分的差别较大,其中部分模式的两个检验系统的预报偏差差别很大,说明暴雨以上的天气系统多为中小尺度系统,其发生的频率在加密系统中的反映可能更合理一些。(2)新的检验量ETS,对于全国这样较大的检验分区而言,大雨以下各级降水评分在量值上要小于TS评分,暴雨以上则比较接近,但其在多模式对比检验中所得的排序结论与TS和技巧评分相近,部分小雨空报较多的模式的评分有较大差别。(3)无论是加密检验,还是标准检验,各级降水检验中表现最好的模式是相同的。(4)分区相同、预报种类不同时,加密检验与标准检验的差别不同。对T213模式而言,两者在暴雨和大暴雨的预报偏差上的差别更显著一些,部分分区检验结论相反。而对预报员的预报而言,差别并不显著,检验结论一致。  相似文献

Summary Impact on forecast accuracy of the choice of the step-mountain (eta) vs. the traditional sigma coordinate is examined by using a model which can be run as either an eta or sigma system model via a simple switch in its code. This is done by (a) synoptic examination of the differences in a set of three forecasts, and (b) comparison of precipitation skill scores in a set of nine consecutive forecasts; each of these sets of forecasts was performed using one and then the other of the two systems. Both efforts indicate that greater accuracy is achnieved in the step-mountain coordinate forecasts. The three forecasts examined from the synoptic point of view are also compared against forecasts of another sigma system model. The two sigma models are found to have errors of an almost identical pattern (two cases) or to have errors which seemed to have the same basic cause.With 13 Figures  相似文献
