Zircon megacrysts from the Mud Tank carbonatite, Australia, are being used in many laboratories as a reference material for LA‐ICP‐MS U‐Pb dating and trace element measurement, and LA‐MC‐ICP‐MS determination of Hf isotopes. We summarise a database of > 10000 analyses of Mud Tank zircon (MTZ), collected from 2000 to 2018 during its use as a secondary reference material for simultaneous U‐Pb and trace element analysis, and for Hf‐isotope analysis. Trace element mass fractions are highest in dark red‐brown stones and lowest in colourless and gem‐quality ones. Individual unzoned grains can be chemically homogeneous, while significant variations in trace element mass fraction are associated with oscillatory zoning. Chondrite‐normalised trace element patterns are essentially parallel over large mass fraction ranges. A Concordia age of 731.0 ± 0.2 Ma (2s,= 2272) is taken as the age of crystallisation. Some grains show lower concordant to mildly discordant ages, probably reflecting minor Pb loss associated with cooling and the Alice Springs Orogeny (450–300 Ma). Our weighted mean 176Hf/177Hf is 0.282523 ± 10 (2s, n = 9350); the uncertainties on this ratio reflect some heterogeneity, mainly between grains. A few analyses suggest that colourless grains have generally lower 176Hf/177Hf. MTZ is a useful secondary reference material for U‐Pb and Hf‐isotope analysis, but individual grains need to be carefully selected using CL imaging and tested for homogeneity, and ideally should be standardised by solution analysis.  相似文献

On the basis of internal structures, laser ablation U–Pb ages and trace element compositions, the origin of zircon in jadeitite in the Nishisonogi metamorphic rocks was examined. The zircon comprises euhedral zoned cores overgrown by euhedral rims. The cores contain inclusions of muscovite, quartz, albite and possibly K‐feldspar, yield 238U–206Pb ages of 126 ± 6 Ma (±2 SD, n = 45, MSWD = 1.0), and have Th/U ratios of 0.48–1.64. The rims contain inclusions of jadeite, yield 238U–206Pb ages of 84 ± 6 Ma (±2 SD, n = 14, MSWD = 1.1), and have Th/U ratios of <0.06. The cores are richer in Y, Th, Ti and rare earth elements (REEs), but the rims are richer in Hf and U. Chondrite‐normalized REE patterns of the cores indicate higher SmN/LaN ratios, lower YbN/GdN ratios and larger positive Ce anomalies compared with those of the rims. Thus, the cores and rims have different 238U–206Pb ages and trace element compositions, suggesting two stages of zircon growth. Although the 238U–206Pb ages of the rims are consistent with the reported 40Ar/39Ar spot‐fusion ages of matrix muscovite in the jadeitite, the 238U–206Pb ages of the cores are older. The mineral inclusions and high Th/U ratios in the cores are best explained by crystallization from felsic magma. Therefore, the cores are considered relicts from igneous precursor rocks. The rims surrounding the inherited cores possibly precipitated from aqueous fluids during jadeitite formation. The elevated U concentrations in the rims suggest that infiltration of external fluids was responsible for the precipitation. This study provides an example of jadeitite formation by metasomatic replacement of a protolith.  相似文献

We describe an in situ method for simultaneous measurement of U–Pb–Hf isotopes and trace element compositions of zircons using a quadrupole and multiple-collector inductively-coupled-plasma mass spectrometer (Q-ICP-MS and MC-ICP-MS, respectively) connected to a single excimer laser-ablation system. A laser-generated zircon aerosol was split behind the ablation cell into two transport tubes via a Y-shaped connector and simultaneously introduced into the two mass spectrometers. Hafnium isotopes were measured on the MC-ICP-MS instrument, while U–Pb ages and trace element compositions were determined using the Q-ICP-MS. The precision and accuracy of this method was evaluated using six well-known and widely used zircon standards (91500, Temora-2, GJ-1, Mud Tank, BR266 and Monastery). Analyses were carried out using spot sizes of 32, 44 and 60 μm. For the 44 and 60 μm spot, the resulting U–Pb ages, Hf isotopic and rare earth element (REE) compositions of these six zircons agree with recommended/reported values within 2σ error. The difference in relative standard deviations (RSD) of 206Pb/238U ages between split-flow measurements and those obtained separately on the Q-ICP-MS is within ~ 20% for 91500, Temora-2 and GJ-1, and ~ 60% for Mud Tank (due to its lower U and Pb concentrations). Our method provides a precise approach for determining the U–Pb age and the Hf isotopic and trace element compositions of zircon within a single ablation event. This is in particular important for analysis of zircons that are small or contain complicated zoning patterns. Finally, the REE composition of zircon BR266 is more homogeneous than other zircons and could be a suitable standard by which to benchmark new standards for microprobe analyses of zircons.  相似文献

Mangakino, the oldest rhyolitic caldera centre delineated in the Taupo Volcanic Zone of New Zealand, generated two very large (super-sized) ignimbrite eruptions, the 1.21 ± 0.04 Ma >500 km3 Ongatiti and ~1.0 Ma ~1,200 km3 Kidnappers events, the latter of which was followed after a short period of erosion by the ~200 km3 Rocky Hill eruption. We present U/Pb ages and trace-element analyses on zircons from pumice clasts from these three eruptions by Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) using SHRIMP-RG instruments to illustrate the evolution of the respective magmatic systems. U–Pb age spectra from the Ongatiti imply growth of the magmatic system over ~250 kyr, with a peak of crystallisation around 1.32 Ma, ~100 kyr prior to eruption. The zircons are inferred to have then remained stable in a mush with little crystallisation and/or dissolution before later rejuvenation of the system at the lead-in to eruption. The paired Kidnappers and Rocky Hill eruptions have U–Pb zircon ages and geochemical signatures that suggest they were products of a common system grown over ~200 kyr. The Kidnappers and Rocky Hill samples show similar weakly bimodal age spectra, with peaks at 1.1 and 1.0 Ma, suggesting that an inherited antecrystic population was augmented by crystals grown at ages within uncertainty of the eruption age. In the Kidnappers, this younger age peak is dominantly seen in needle-shaped low U grains with aspect ratios of up to 18. In all three deposits, zircon cores show larger ranges and higher absolute concentrations of trace elements than zircon rims, consistent with zircon crystallisation from evolving melts undergoing crystal fractionation involving plagioclase and amphibole. Abundances and ratios of many trace elements frequently show variations between different sectors within single grains, even where there is no visible sector zoning in cathodoluminescence (CL) imaging. Substitution mechanisms, as reflected in the molar (Sc + Y + REE3+)/P ratio, differ in the same growth zone between the sides (along a-axis and b-axis: values approaching 1.0) and tips (c-axis: values between 1.5 and 5.0) of single crystals. These observations have implications for the use of zircons for tracking magmatic processes, particularly in techniques where CL zonation within crystals is not assessed and small analytical spot sizes cannot be achieved. These observations also limit applicability of the widely used Ti-in-zircon thermometer. The age spectra for the Ongatiti and Kidnappers/Rocky Hill samples indicate that both magmatic systems were newly built in the time-breaks after respective previous large eruptions from Mangakino. Trace element variations defining three-component mixing suggest that zircons, sourced from multiple melts, contributed to the population in each system.  相似文献

Major‐ and trace‐element chemistry (including rare‐earth elements), total‐rock Rb‐Sr and U‐Pb and zircon U‐Pb data are used in an attempt to distinguish between two essentially coeval, felsic volcanic suites: the predominantly submarine Woodlawn suite which is associated with massive Cu‐Pb‐Zn sulphide mineralization and the terrestrial Mt Painter suite, with minor vein‐type mineralization. The Woodlawn samples are the unmineralized equivalents of the volcanics in the immediate ore environment.

Alteration perturbs some of the major‐ and trace‐element chemistry, particularly Ca and alkalis, thereby precluding their usefulness. REE patterns exhibit a significant light to heavy rare‐earth enrichment with an average La/Yb of 12 in the Mt Painter volcanics compared with 5.6 in the Woodlawn volcanics. Both suites have a marked negative Eu anomaly, with that of the Woodlawn samples more pronounced (‐45.5) than in the Mt Painter volcanics (‐29.2). A hydrothermally‐altered sample from Woodlawn has apparently lost about 50% of its light rare‐earth elements.

Initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios at about 0.711 are the same for rocks from both suites and differences in initial lead‐isotopic ratios appear negligible.

Zircons from both suites are a mixture of clear euhedral crystals and rounded discrete crystals or rounded cores overgrown by clear zircon. The U‐Pb data substantiate the morphological features in that the zircon suites both contain older inherited Pb but the Mt Painter zircons contain a greater proportion.

Cs concentrations and Cs/Rb and Ti/Zr ratios can be used to distinguish between the Woodlawn suite and the Mt Painter suite.  相似文献

Orogenic crustal thickening leads to increased continental elevation and runoff into the oceans, but there are fundamental uncertainties in the temporal patterns of thickening through Earth history. U‐Pb age and trace element data in detrital zircons from Antarctica are consistent with recent global analyses suggesting two dominant peaks in average crustal thickness from ~2.6 to 2.0 Ga and ~0.8 to 0.5 Ga. Shifts in marine carbonate 87Sr/86Sr ratios show two primary peaks that post‐date these crustal thickness peaks, suggesting significant weathering and erosion of global continental relief. Both episodes correlate well with zircon trace element and isotope proxies indicating enhanced crustal and fluid input into subduction zone magmas. Increased crustal thickness correlates with increased passive margin abundance and overlaps with snowball Earth glaciations and atmospheric oxygenation, suggesting a causal link between continental rift‐drift phases and major transitions in Earth's atmospheric and oceanic evolution.  相似文献

The Ogcheon metamorphic belt consists primarily of metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks that have experienced polyphase tectonometamorphism since the Neoproterozoic. Peak metamorphism reaching up to lower-amphibolite facies produced ubiquitous garnet porphyroblasts in pelitic and mafic schists. To determine the timing of their formation, step-leaching experiments were undertaken for five garnet fractions separated from pelitic and quartz-hornblende-garnet schists. The U–Pb ages from three samples are identical within 2σ errors, ranging from 291 ± 41 Ma to 276 ± 29 Ma. The quasi-linearity of leachates in 238U–206Pb and 208Pb–206Pb diagrams suggests that U and Pb are released from a single mineral phase and that minor chemical fractionation between U and Pb may have occurred during the leaching experiment. Deviations of residues and bulk garnet fractions from the linear trend are attributed to partial dissolution of refractory inclusions of detrital zircon. Th/U ratios of leachates are in the range of 3.4–12, much higher than those of pure garnet, and suggest the contribution of allanite. Negative relationships in the Sm–Nd isochron diagram and similar 147Sm/144Nd ratios between whole rock and garnet corroborate the influence of light rare earth element (LREE)-rich allanite on the Sm–Nd isotopic system. Simple mass-balance calculations indicate that only a trace amount (0.35 modal%) of allanite inclusions should govern the U–Th–Pb systematics of garnet. Petrographic evidence together with the consistency in U–Pb ages suggests that allanite is a product of prograde metamorphism. Thus, peak metamorphism responsible for the growth of allanite-bearing garnet porphyroblasts in the Ogcheon metamorphic belt is best estimated to be Early Permian.  相似文献

In this paper, we present U–Pb ages and trace element compositions of titanite from the Ruanjiawan W–Cu–Mo skarn deposit in the Daye district, eastern China to constrain the magmatic and hydrothermal history in this deposit and provide a better understanding of the U–Pb geochronology and trace element geochemistry of titanite that have been subjected to post-crystallization hydrothermal alteration. Titanite from the mineralized skarn, the ore-related quartz diorite stock, and a diabase dike intruding this stock were analyzed using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS). Titanite grains from the quartz diorite and diabase dike typically coexist with hydrothermal minerals such as epidote, sericite, chlorite, pyrite, and calcite, and display irregular or patchy zoning. These grains have low LREE/HREE and high Th/U and Lu/Hf ratios, coupled with negative Eu and positive Ce anomalies. The textural and compositional data indicate that titanite from the quartz diorite has been overprinted by hydrothermal fluids after being crystallized from magmas. Titanite grains from the mineralized skarn are texturally equilibrated with retrograde skarn minerals including actinolite, quartz, calcite, and epidote, demonstrating that these grains were formed directly from hydrothermal fluids responsible for the mineralization. Compared to the varieties from the quartz diorite stock and diabase dike, titanite grains from the mineralized skarn have much lower REE contents and LREE/HREE, Th/U, and Lu/Hf ratios. They have a weighted mean 206Pb/238U age of 142 ± 2 Ma (MSWD = 0.7, 2σ), in agreement with a zircon U–Pb age of 144 ± 1 Ma (MSWD = 0.3, 2σ) of the quartz diorite and thus interpreted as formation age of the Ruanjiawan W–Cu–Mo deposit. Titanite grains from the ore-related quartz diorite have a concordant U–Pb age of 132 ± 2 Ma (MSWD = 0.5, 2σ), which is 10–12 Ma younger than the zircon U–Pb age of the same sample and thus interpreted as the time of a hydrothermal overprint after their crystallization. This hydrothermal overprint was most likely related to the emplacement of the diabase dike that has a zircon U–Pb age of 133 ± 1 Ma and a titanite U–Pb age of 131 ± 2 Ma. The geochronological results thus reveal two hydrothermal events in the Ruanjiawan deposit: an early one forming the Wu–Cu–Mo ores related to the emplacement of the quartz diorite stock and a later one causing alteration of the quartz diorite and its titanite due to emplacement of diabase dike. It is suggested that titanite is much more susceptible to hydrothermal alteration than zircon. Results from this study also highlight the utilization of trace element compositions in discriminating titanite of magmatic and hydrothermal origins, facilitating a more reasonable interpretation of the titanite U–Pb ages.  相似文献

Barrington shield volcano was active for 55 million years, based on basalt K–Ar and zircon fission track dating. Activity in the northeast, at 59 Ma, preceded more substantial activity between 55 and 51 Ma and more limited activity on western and southern flanks after 45 Ma. Eruptions brought up megacrystic gemstones (ruby, sapphire and zircon) throughout the volcanism, particularly during quieter eruptive periods. Zircon fission track dating (thermal reset ages) indicates gem‐bearing eruptions at 57, 43, 38, 28 and 4–5 Ma, while U–Pb isotope SHRIMP dating suggests two main periods of zircon crystallisation between 60 and 50 Ma and 46–45 Ma. Zircons show growth and sector twinning typical of magmatic crystallisation and include low‐U, moderate‐U and high‐U types. The 46 Ma high‐U zircons exhibit trace and rare‐earth element patterns that approach those of zircon inclusions in sapphires and may mark a sapphire formation time at Barrington. Two Barrington basaltic episodes include primary lavas with trace‐element signatures suggesting amphibole/apatite‐enriched lithospheric mantle sources. Other basalts less‐enriched in Th, Sr, P and light rare‐earth elements have trace‐element ratios that overlap those of HIMU‐related South Tasman basalts. Zircon and sapphire formation is attributed to crystallisation from minor felsic melts derived by incipient melting of amphibole‐enriched mantle during lesser thermal activity. Ruby from Barrington volcano is a metamorphic type, and a metamorphic/metasomatic origin associated with basement ultramafic bodies is favoured. Migratory plate/plume paths constructed through Barrington basaltic episodes intersect approximately 80% of dated Palaeogene basaltic activity (65–30 Ma) along the Tasman margin (27–37°S) supporting a migratory plume‐linked origin. Neogene Barrington activity dwindled to sporadic gem‐bearing eruptions, the last possibly marking a minor plume trace. The present subdued thermal profile in northeastern New South Wales mantle suggests future Barrington activity will be minimal.  相似文献

The post-Variscan complex of Porto consists of metaluminous to slightly peraluminous A-type biotite granites mingled with gabbro-dioritic rocks, and late dykes with basaltic to trachyandesitic composition. U-Pb zircon dating by LA-ICP-MS on two mafic intrusive samples constrains the time of the gabbro–granite crystallisation at 281 ± 3 Ma and 283 ± 2 Ma. Hornblende 40Ar-39Ar ages from a late trachyandesite dyke date the dyking event at 280 ± 2 Ma, which is within error the U-Pb zircon ages of the intrusives. Biotite granites show variable major and trace element compositions and similar initial εNd (−0.3 to +0.9). Whole rock chemistry variations and trace element compositions of plagioclase and allanite indicate that the granites are genetically linked, essentially through fractional crystallisation of feldspars and minor allanite. On the basis of whole-rock chemistry e.g. initial εNd +4.9 to +1.7 and trace element clinopyroxene compositions, we have ascertained that the mafic intrusives and basic dykes formed from isotopically depleted mantle source-derived melts with similar trace element signature. These basic melts experienced slightly different evolutionary histories, controlled by fractional crystallisation and crustal contamination, mainly by the acid magma that gave rise to the associated biotite granites, but also by the enclosing older Variscan granitoids. U-Pb zircon data suggest that the Porto complex was affected by hydrothermal fluid circulation at 259 ± 9 Ma.  相似文献

Sapphirine–quartz granulites from the Cocachacra region of the Arequipa Massif in southern Peru record early Neoproterozoic ultrahigh‐temperature metamorphism. Phase equilibrium modelling and zircon petrochronology are used to quantify timing and pressure–temperature (P–T) conditions of metamorphism. Modelling of three magnetite‐bearing sapphirine–quartz samples indicates peak temperatures of >950°C at ~0.7 GPa and a clockwise P–T evolution. Elevated concentrations of Al in orthopyroxene are also consistent with ultrahigh‐temperature conditions. Neoblastic zircon records ages of c. 1.0–0.9 Ga that are interpreted to record protracted ultrahigh‐temperature metamorphism. Th/U ratios of zircon of up to 100 reflect U‐depleted whole‐rock compositions. Concentrations of heavy rare earth elements in zircon do not show systematic trends with U–Pb age but do correlate with variable whole‐rock compositions. Very large positive Ce anomalies in zircon from two samples probably relate to strongly oxidizing conditions during neoblastic zircon crystallization. Low concentrations of Ti‐in‐zircon (<10 ppm) are interpreted to result from reduced titania activities due to the strongly oxidized nature of the granulites and the sequestration of titanium‐rich minerals away from the reaction volume. Whole‐rock compositions and oxidation state have a strong influence on the trace element composition of metamorphic zircon, which has implications for interpreting the geological significance of ages retrieved from zircon in oxidized metamorphic rocks.  相似文献

We report new zircon U–Pb geochronologic and Hf-isotopic data, and whole-rock major and trace element data, for the Labuco granitoids of the southern margin of the Southern Qiangtang terrane (SQ), Tibet. Five intermediate–felsic samples yielded zircon U–Pb ages of 169–156 Ma, making the Labuco granitoids contemporaneous with Middle–Late Jurassic magmatism in the SQ. The granitoids exhibit a range of zircon εHf(t) values from − 7.3 to − 0.6. The samples from Labuco can be divided into low-Sr/Y granitoids (LSG) and high-Sr/Y granitoids (HSG). The LSG are normal calc-alkaline I-type granitoids, characterized by varying major and trace element contents indicative of partial melting of ancient mafic lower crust. The HSG are characterized by high Sr/Y ratios (64–75), (La/Yb)N (chondrite-normalized) ratios of 57–76, and (Gd/Yb)N ratios of 6.6–8.9. These signatures indicate that the HSG were derived by partial melting of garnet-bearing thickened lower crust. The across-arc variation in magma geochemistry in the SQ was caused by tectonic shortening and crustal thickening, which occurred as a result of the northward subduction of the Bangong–Nujiang Ocean lithosphere during the Middle–Late Jurassic. These results have important implications for our understanding of tectonic shortening, crustal thickening, and the geometry of modern and ancient subduction zones.  相似文献

Metatexite and diatexite migmatites are widely distributed within the upper amphibolite and granulite facies zones of the Higo low‐P/high‐T metamorphic terrane. Here, we report data from an outcrop in the highest grade part of the granulite facies zone, in which diatexite occurs as a 3 m thick layer between 2 m thick layers of stromatic‐structured metatexite within pelitic gneiss. The migmatites and gneiss contain the same peak mineral assemblage of biotite + plagioclase + quartz + garnet + K‐feldspar with retrograde chlorite ± muscovite and some accessory minerals of ilmenite ± rutile ± titanite + apatite + zircon + monazite ± pyrite ± zinc sulphide ± calcite. Calculated metamorphic P–T conditions are 800–900 °C and 9–12 kbar. Zircon in the diatexite forms elongate euhedral crystals with oscillatory zoning, but no core–rim structure. Zircon from the gneiss and metatexite forms euhedral–subhedral grains comprising inherited cores overgrown by thin rims. The overgrowth rims in the metatexite have lower Th/U ratios than zircon in the diatexite and yield a 206Pb/238U age of 116.0 ± 1.6 Ma, which is older than the 110.1 ± 0.6 Ma 206Pb/238U age derived from zircon in the diatexite. Zircon from the diatexite has variable REE contents with convex upward patterns and flat normalized HREE, whereas the overgrowth rims in the metatexite and gneiss have steep HREE‐enriched patterns; however, both types have similar positive Ce and negative Eu anomalies. 176Hf/177Hf ratios in the overgrowth rims from the metatexite are more variable and generally lower than values from zircon in the diatexite. Based on U–Pb ages, trace element and Hf isotope data, the zircon rims in the metatexite are interpreted to have crystallized from a locally derived melt, following partial dissolution of inherited protolith zircon during anatexis, whereas the zircon in the diatexite is interpreted to have crystallized from a melt that included an externally derived component. By integrating zircon and petrographic data for the migmatites and pelitic gneiss, the metatexite migmatite is interpreted to have formed by in situ partial melting in which the melt did not migrate from the source, whereas the diatexite migmatite included an externally derived juvenile component. The Cretaceous high‐temperature metamorphism of the Higo metamorphic terrane is interpreted to reflect emplacement of mantle‐derived basalts under a volcanic arc along the eastern margin of the Eurasian continent and advection of heat via hybrid silicic melts from the lower crust. Post‐peak crystallization of anatectic melts in a high‐T region at mid‐crustal depths occurred in the interval c. 116–110 Ma, as indicated by the difference in zircon ages from the metatexite and diatexite migmatites.  相似文献

For magmatic rocks, it is often found that zircon 206 Pb/238 U and 207 Pb/235 U ratios continuously plot on the concordia line with a relatively large age span for the same sample, which gives rise to large dating errors or even unrealistic dating results. As the trace element concentrations of zircon can reflect its equilibrated magma characteristics, they can be used to determine whether all the analytical spots on the zircons selected to calculate the weighted mean age are cogenetic and formed in a single magma chamber. This work utilizes the results of zircon trace element concentrations and U-Pb isotopic analyses to explore the screening of reasonable U-Pb ages, which can be used to determine a more accurate intrusion crystallization age. The late Mesozoic Huayuangong granitic pluton complex, which is located in the Lower Yangtze region, eastern China, was selected for a case study. The Huayuangong pluton comprises the central intrusion and the marginal intrusion. Two samples from the marginal intrusion yielded consistent zircon weighted mean 206 Pb/238 U ages of 124.6 ± 2.0 Ma and 125.9 ± 1.6 Ma. These analytical spots also exhibit Zr/Hf and Th/U ratios concordant with the evolution of a single magma, from which the dated zircons crystallized. However, for the central intrusion, the analytical spots on zircons from two samples all show a continuous distribution on the concordia line with a relatively large age span. For each sample from the central intrusion, the zircon Zr/Hf ratios do not conform to a single magma evolutionary trend, but rather can be divided into two groups. We propose that zircon Zr/Hf ratios can provide a new constraint on U-Pb zircon dating and zircon Th/U ratios can also be used as a supplementary indicator to constrain zircon dating and determine the origins of the zircons and whether magma mixing has occurred. By screening zircon analytical spots using these two indicators, the two samples from the central intrusion of the Huayuangong pluton produce results of 122.8 ± 4.3 Ma and 122.9 ± 2.2 Ma, which are consistent with the field observations that the central intrusion is slightly younger than the marginal intrusion.  相似文献

An assessment of the utility of staurolite in U-Pb dating of metamorphism   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Pb isotope data, major and trace element compositions, fission track and synchrotron X-ray fluorescence analyses are presented for staurolites from nine pelitic schists in the continental United States to evaluate their potential use in U-Pb geochronology. Seven U-Pb analyses from Lanzirotti and Hanson (1995) are reexamined with respect to this additional data which was not available at the time. These data are then compared to 21 new U-Pb analyses of staurolite of varying composition from a variety of localities. The primary goals of this study are to: (1) evaluate the variability in U and Pb abundance and U/Pb ratio in staurolites of varying composition; (2) constrain how much of the measured U and Pb is derived from radiogenic solid inclusions such as monazite and zircon; (3) constrain how much of the measured U and Pb is derived from staurolite itself and evaluate any possible correlation of U and Pb abundance and U/Pb ratio to major element composition; (4) place preliminary constraints on closure temperature to Pb diffusion in staurolite; (5) evaluate how meaningful U-Pb ages can better be calculated for the low U/Pb ratio minerals. In the staurolite fractions analyzed U abundances range from 0.2 to 24.9 ppm, Pb from 0.13 to 2.41 ppm, the 238U/204Pb ratios vary from 135 to 9447, and the 206Pb/204Pb ratios from 23 to 623. For many of the fractions analyzed precise U-Pb ages can be calculated (±10 Ma or better) that appear to be consistent with available age constraints on the time of peak metamorphism. Mass balance calculations, fission track analysis, and synchrotron X-ray fluorescence trace element mapping show that although radiogenic inclusions are almost always present in large staurolite porphyroblasts, it is difficult for inclusions to account for the measured Pb isotopic compositions. It is also demonstrated that the U-Pb ages calculated for staurolites from Connecticut are at least 20 Ma older than nearby Rb-Sr muscovite and 40Ar-39Ar hornblende ages. This is consistent with staurolite having a closure temperature to U and Pb diffusion significantly higher than 500 °C. Received: 14 July 1995 / Accepted: 16 May 1997  相似文献

Simultaneous in-situ analyses of trace elements, U–Th–Pb and Lu–Hf isotopes were carried out on distinct domains of zircons in ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) eclogite-facies metamorphic rocks from the main hole of the Chinese Continental Scientific Drilling (CCSD) in the Sulu orogen. For the first time, trace elements are directly linked to Lu–Hf isotopes in metamorphic zircons with reference to their U–Pb dates. This enables methodological integration to distinguish four types of metamorphic zircon: solid-state, replacement and dissolution recrystallizations of protolith zircons, and new growth from the aqueous fluid. Metamorphically grown zircons are characterized by concordant U–Pb ages for the metamorphism, flat HREE patterns typical of the garnet effect, low contents of REE (especially HREE), Y, Nb + Ta and Th + U, high contents of Hf, low (Lu/Gd)N, Lu/Hf and Th/U (< 0.1) ratios, and elevated 176Hf/177Hf ratios relative to solid-state recrystallized zircons. This suggests the effects of both garnet and fluid on the growth of metamorphic zircons. In contrast, metamorphic recrystallization has reset the U–Th–Pb isotope system of protolith zircons to different extents, depending on the extents of fluid action during metamorphism. Solid-state recrystallized zircons exhibit the lowest degrees of resetting and thus almost inherit all geochemical features from the protolith zircons, which are characterized by discordant U–Pb ages close to or below the protolith age, steep MREE–HREE patterns typical of magmatic origin, high contents of trace elements and their ratios, and low 176Hf/177Hf ratios. On the other hand, dissolution recrystallized zircons show the highest degrees of reworking and thus have concordant or nearly concordant U–Pb ages for the metamorphism, steep MREE–HREE patterns, lowered contents of trace elements such as REE, Th, U, Y, Nb, Ta and Ti relative to the protolith zircons, and almost unchanged Hf isotope ratios. Replacement recrystallized zircons display intermediate degrees of reworking and thus have their many features of elements and isotopes in between. While the metamorphic growth in the presence of both garnet and fluid is characterized by both depletion of HREE with flat pattern and the low contents of trace elements, the metamorphic recrystallization in the presence of aqueous fluid is indicated by gradual decreases of MREE to HREE without the flat HREE pattern. Therefore, the simultaneous in-situ analyses of metamorphic zircons have the advantage over single-term analyses in making distinction between the new growth and the different types of recrystallization.  相似文献

The effects of crystal-plasticity on the U-Th-Pb system in zircon is studied by quantitative microstructural and microchemical analysis of a large zircon grain collected from pyroxenite of the Lewisian Complex, Scotland. Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) mapping reveals a c.18° variation in crystallographic orientation that comprises both a gradual change in orientation and a series of discrete low-angle (<4°) boundaries. These microstructural data are consistent with crystal-plastic deformation of zircon associated with the formation and migration of dislocations. A heterogeneous pattern of dark cathodoluminescence, with the darkest domains coinciding with low-angle boundaries, mimics the deformation microstructure identified by EBSD. Geochemical data collected using the Sensitive High Resolution Ion MicroProbe (SHRIMP) shows a positive correlation between concentrations of the elements U, Th and Pb (ranging from 20–60 ppm, 30–110 ppm, and 14–36 ppm, respectively) and Th/U ratio (1.13 – 1.8) with the deformation microstructure. The highest measured concentrations and Th/U coincide with low-angle boundaries. This enrichment is interpreted to reflect enhanced bulk diffusion of U and Th due to the formation and migration of high-diffusivity dislocations. 207Pb/206Pb ages for individual analyses show no significant variation across the grain, and define a concordant, combined mean age of 2451 ± 14 Ma. This indicates that the grain was deformed shortly after initial crystallization, most probably during retrograde Inverian metamorphism at amphibolite facies conditions. The elevated Th over U and consistent 207Pb/206Pb ages indicates that deformation most likely occurred in the presence of a late-stage magmatic fluid that drove an increase in the Th/U during deformation. The relative enrichment of Th over U implies that Th/U ratio may not always be a robust indicator of crystallization environment. This study provides the first evidence of deformation-related modification of the U-Th system in zircon and has fundamental implications for the application and interpretation of zircon trace element data.  相似文献

The Yangchang granite‐hosted Mo deposit is typical of the Xilamulun metallogenic belt, which is one of the important Mo–Pb–Zn–Ag producers in China. A combination of major and trace element, Sr, Nd and Pb isotope, and zircon U–Pb age data are reported for the Yangchang batholith to constrain its petrogenesis and Mo mineralization. Zircon LA‐ICPMS U–Pb dating yields mean ages of 138 ± 2 and 132 ± 2 Ma for monzogranite and granite porphyry, respectively. The monzogranites and granite porphyries are calc‐alkaline with K2O/Na2O ratios of 0.75–0.92 and 1.75–4.42, respectively. They are all enriched in large‐ion lithophile elements (LILEs) and depleted in high‐field‐strength elements (HFSEs) with negative Nb and Ta anomalies in primitive‐mantle‐normalized trace element diagrams. The monzogranites have relatively high Sr (380–499 ppm) and Y (14–18 ppm) concentrations, and the granite porphyries have lower Sr (31–71 ppm) and Y (5–11 ppm) concentrations than those of monzogranites. The monzogranites and granite porphyries have relatively low initial Sr isotope ratios of 0.704573–0.705627 and 0.704281, respectively, and similar 206Pb/204Pb ratios of 18.75–18.98 and 18.48–18.71, respectively. In contrast, the εNd(t) value (−3.7) of granite porphyry is lower than those of monzogranites (−1.5 to −2.7) with Nd model ages of about 1.0 Ga. These geochemical features suggest that the monzogranite and granite porphyries were derived from juvenile crustal rocks related to subduction of the Paleo‐Pacific plate under east China. Both oceanic and continental HP rocks are juxtaposed in the Huwan shear zone in the western Dabie orogen, and thus provide a window for testing the buoyancy‐driven exhumation of dense oceanic HP rocks. The HP metamorphic age of the continental rocks in this zone has not been well constrained, and hence it is not known if they are of the same age as the exhumation of the HP oceanic rocks. In situ laser ablation (multiple collector) inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA‐(MC‐)ICP‐MS), U–Pb, trace element and Hf isotope analyses were made on zircon in a granitic gneiss and two eclogites from the Huwan shear zone. U–Pb age and trace element analysis of residual magmatic zircon in an eclogite constrain its protolith formation at 411 ± 4 Ma. The zircon in this sample displays εHf (t) values of +6.1 to +14.4. The positive εHf (t) values up to +14.4 suggest that the protolith was derived from a relatively depleted mantle source, most likely Palaeotethyan oceanic crust. A granitic gneiss and the other eclogite yield protolith U–Pb ages of 738 ± 6 and 700 ± 14 Ma, respectively, which are both the Neoproterozoic basement rocks of the Yangtze Block. The zircon in the granitic gneiss has low εHf (t) values of ?14.2 to ?10.5 and old TDM2 ages of 2528–2298 Ma, suggesting reworking of Palaeoproterozoic crust during the Neoproterozoic. The zircon in the eclogite has εHf (t) values of ?1.0 to +7.4 and TDM1 ages of 1294–966 Ma, implying prompt reworking of juvenile crust during its protolith formation. Metamorphic zircon in both eclogite samples displays low Th/U ratios, trace element concentrations, relatively flat heavy rare earth element patterns, weak negative Eu anomalies and low 176Lu/177Hf ratios. All these features suggest that the metamorphic zircon formed in the presence of garnet but in the absence of feldspar, and thus under eclogite facies conditions. The metamorphic zircon yields U–Pb ages of 310 ± 3 and 306 ± 7 Ma. Therefore, both the oceanic‐ and continental‐type eclogites share the same episode of Carboniferous eclogite facies metamorphism. This suggests that high‐pressure continental‐type metamorphic rocks might have played a key role in the exhumation and preservation of oceanic‐type eclogites through buoyancy‐driven uplift.  相似文献

The present study reports new zircon LA–ICP–MS U–Pb ages, trace element and Hf isotope data, and whole-rock major and trace element data from Cambrian metarhyolites from Zhaqian and Zhakang in the central Lhasa subterrane of southern Tibet. One sample from Zhakang provides a weighted mean 206Pb/238U age of 510.4 ± 4.0 Ma and two samples from Zhaqian yield weighted mean 206Pb/238U ages of 510.6 ± 2.6 Ma and 524.8 ± 2.9 Ma, indicating that the Zhaqian and Zhakang metarhyolites were contemporaneous. Both are characterized by high SiO2 and K2O and low Na2O. They are also primarily high-K calc-alkaline, are enriched in Th, U, and light rare earth elements (LREEs), and are depleted in Nb, Ta, Ti, and P. Thus, they are geochemically similar to typical arc volcanic rocks. Moreover, the Zhaqian metarhyolites exhibit varying zircon εHf(t) values (−3.8 to +0.3) that are comparable to those of the Zhakang metarhyolites (−4.9 to −1.0). Both metarhyolites are interpreted as resulting from partial melting of Proterozoic metasedimentary rocks with mantle-derived magma contributions. Contemporaneous magmatism in the early Paleozoic has also been recognized in other microcontinents along the Gondwana proto-Tethyan margin. The emplacement of these magmatic rocks and the development of a Cambro–Ordovician angular unconformity in the central Lhasa subterrane can be attributed to subduction of proto-Tethys Ocean lithosphere in a Andean-type magmatic arc setting following the assembly of various continental components within the Gondwana supercontinent.  相似文献
