This study uses field, microstructural and geochemical data to investigate the processes contributing to the petrological diversity that arises when granitic continental crust is reworked. The Kinawa migmatite formed when Archean TTG crust in the São Francisco Craton, Brazil was reworked by partial melting at ~730 °C and 5–6 kbar in a regional‐scale shear zone. As a result, a relatively uniform leucogranodiorite protolith produced compositionally and microstructurally diverse diatexites and leucosomes. All outcrops of migmatite display either a magmatic foliation, flow banding or transposed leucosomes and indicate strong, melt‐present shearing. There are three types of diatexite. Grey diatexites are interpreted to be residuum, although melt segregation was incomplete in some samples. Biotite stable, H2O‐fluxed melting is inferred via the reaction Pl + Kfs + Qz + H2O = melt and geochemical modelling indicates 0.35–0.40 partial melting. Schlieren diatexites are extremely heterogeneous; residuum‐rich domains alternate with leucocratic quartzofeldspathic domains. Homogeneous diatexites have the highest SiO2 and K2O contents and are coarse‐grained, leucocratic rocks. Homogeneous diatexites, quartzofeldspathic domains from the schlieren diatexites and the leucosomes contain both plagioclase‐dominated and K‐feldspar‐dominated feldspar framework microstructures and hence were melt‐derived rocks. Both types of feldspar frameworks show evidence of tectonic compaction. Modelling the crystallization of an initial anatectic melt shows plagioclase appears first; K‐feldspar appears after ~40% crystallization. In the active shear zone setting, shear‐enhanced compaction provided an essentially continuous driving force for segregation. Thus, Kinawa migmatites with plagioclase frameworks are interpreted to have formed by shear‐enhanced compaction early in the crystallization of anatectic melt, whereas those with K‐feldspar frameworks formed later from the expelled fractionated melt. Trace element abundances in some biotite and plagioclase from the fractionated melt‐derived rocks indicate that these entrained minerals were derived from the wall rocks. Results from the Kinawa migmatites indicate that the key factor in generating petrological diversity during crustal reworking is that shear‐enhanced compaction drove melt segregation throughout the period that melt was present in the rocks. Segregation of melt during melting produced residuum and anatectic melt and their mixtures, whereas segregation during crystallization resulted in crystal fractionation and generated diverse plagioclase‐rich rocks and fractionated melts.

Upper amphibolite facies felsic gneiss from Broken Hill records the metatexite to schlieren diatexite to massive diatexite transition in a single rock type over a scale of tens to hundreds of metres. The metatexites are characterized by centimetre‐scale segregation of melt into leucosomes to form stromatic migmatite. The schlieren diatexites are characterized by the disaggregation of the rocks and the development of schlieren migmatite. The massive diatexites represent a higher degree of disaggregation, lack schlieren and contain plagioclase and K‐feldspar phenocrysts. The transition from metatexite to schlieren diatexite and massive diatexite was heterogeneous with both disaggregation of the rock on a grain scale and disaggregation of the rock into centimetre‐ to metre‐scale rafts. As melt contents increased, the proportion of material disaggregated on a grain scale increased. The high proportion of melt needed to form diatexites at upper amphibolite facies conditions was the result of an influx of hydrous fluid at temperatures just above the solidus of the diatexites. Nearby metapelitic rocks, with a slightly higher solidus temperature, undergoing subsolidus muscovite breakdown are the likely source of the fluid. Continued heating during and after the influx of fluid led to melt contents of up to c. 60 mol.% in the massive diatexite. The metatexite zone probably involved little added fluid. Continued deformation during cooling and melt crystallization resulted in the extensive development of schlieren and late‐stage melt segregations and melt‐rich shear bands in the schlieren diatexite zone. The rocks of the massive diatexite zone lack these late‐stage segregations, consistent with the cessation of D2 deformation prior to them developing a crystal framework.  相似文献

Melt infiltration into quartzite took place due to generation and migration of partial melts within the high‐grade metamorphic rocks of the Big Cottonwood (BC) formation in the Little Cottonwood contact aureole (UT, USA). Melt was produced by muscovite and biotite dehydration melting reactions in the BC formation, which contains pelite and quartzite interlayered on a centimetre to decimetre scale. In the migmatite zone, melt extraction from the pelites resulted in restitic schollen surrounded by K‐feldspar‐enriched quartzite. Melt accumulation occurred in extensional or transpressional domains such as boudin necks, veins and ductile shear zones, during intrusion‐related deformation in the contact aureole. The transition between the quartzofeldspathic segregations and quartzite shows a gradual change in texture. Here, thin K‐feldspar rims surround single, round quartz grains. The textures are interpreted as melt infiltration texture. Pervasive melt infiltration into the quartzite induced widening of the quartz–quartz grain boundaries, and led to progressive isolation of quartz grains. First as clusters of grains, and with increasing infiltration as single quartz grains in the K‐feldspar‐rich matrix of the melt segregation. A 3D–μCT reconstruction showed that melt formed an interconnected network in the quartzites. Despite abundant macroscopic evidence for deformation in the migmatite zone, individual quartz grains found in quartzofeldspathic segregations have a rounded crystal shape and lack quartz crystallographic orientation, as documented with electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). Water‐rich melts, similar to pegmatitic melts documented in this field study, were able to infiltrate the quartz network and disaggregate grain coherency of the quartzites. The proposed mechanism can serve as a model to explain abundant xenocrysts found in magmatic systems.  相似文献

The S-type Peninsula Pluton (South Africa) exhibits substantial compositional variability and hosts a large variety of mafic and felsic magmatic enclaves with contrasting textures and compositions. Moreover, the pluton is characterized by mechanical concentrations of K-feldspar megacrysts, cordierite and biotite, generating a complex array of magmatic structures including schlieren, pipes, and spectacular sheeted structures. Chemical evidence indicates that the pluton is constructed incrementally by rapid emplacement of numerous magma pulses. Field, and textural data suggest that magmatic structures form by local flow at the emplacement level of highly viscous crystal-rich magmas (i.e. crystallinity up to 50?vol.%) through magma mushes assembled from older batches. At the time of arrival of relatively late magma batches, some areas within the pluton had achieved crystal fractions that allowed the material to act as a solid, whilst maintaining enough melt to prevent formation of sharp intrusional contacts. Magmatic structures represent “snapshots” of processes that operate in multiphase crystal-rich mushes and their genesis is due to mechanical and thermal instabilities in the crystal-rich magma chamber that are triggered by the emplacement of pulses of new magma derived from the melting of a compositionally variable metasedimentary source.  相似文献

Petrological and geochemical variations are used to investigatethe formation of granite magma from diatexite migmatites derivedfrom metasedimentary rocks of pelitic to greywacke compositionat St. Malo, France. Anatexis occurred at relatively low temperaturesand pressures (<800°C, 4–7 kbar), principally throughmuscovite dehydration melting. Biotite remained stable and servesas a tracer for the solid fraction during melt segregation. The degree of partial melting, calculated from modal mineralogyand reaction stoichiometry, was <40 vol. %. There is a continuousvariation in texture, mineralogy and chemical composition inthe diatexite migmatites. Mesocratic diatexite formed when metasedimentaryrocks melted sufficiently to undergo bulk flow or magma flow, but did not experience significant melt–residuum separation.Mesocratic diatexite that underwent melt segregation duringflow generated (1) melanocratic diatexites at the places wherethe melt fraction was removed, leaving behind a biotite andplagioclase residuum (enriched in TiO2, FeOT, MgO, CaO, Sc,Ni, Cr, V, Zr, Hf, Th, U and REE), and (2) a complementary leucocraticdiatexite (enriched in SiO2, K2O and Rb) where the melt fractionaccumulated. Leucocratic diatexite still contained 5–15vol. % residual biotite (mg-number 40–44) and 10–20vol. % residual plagioclase (An22). Anatectic granite magmadeveloped from the leucodiatexite, first by further melt–residuumseparation, then through fractional crystallization. Most biotitein the anatectic granite is magmatic (mg-number 18–22). KEY WORDS: anatexis; diatexite; granite magma; melt segregation; migmatite  相似文献

In the Karakoram Shear Zone, Ladakh, NW India, Miocene leucogranitic dykes form an extensive, varied and complex network, linking an anatectic terrane exposed in the Pangong Range, with leucogranites of the Karakoram Batholith. Mineral paragenesis of the heterogeneous anatectic source rocks suggests melting has resulted from water influx into rocks at upper amphibolite facies conditions, and microstructures suggest anatexis was contemporaneous with shearing. The network is characterized by continuous and interconnected dykes, with only rare cross‐cutting relationships, forming swarms and chaotic injection complexes where magmatic rocks cover up to 50% of the outcrop area. Despite this volume of magma, the system did not lose continuity, suggesting that it did not flow en masse and that the magma network was not all liquid simultaneously. Leucogranites in this network, including leucosomes in migmatites, carry an isotopic signature intermediate between the two main anatectic rocks in the source, suggesting efficient homogenization of the magmatic products. Here, we describe a number of microscopic features of these magmatic rocks which suggests that several pulses of magma used the same pathways giving rise to textural and chemical disequilibrium features. These include: (i) narrow, tortuous corridors of fine‐grained minerals cutting across or lining the boundaries of larger grains, interpreted to be remnants of magma‐filled cracks cutting across a pre‐existing magmatic rock; (ii) corrosion of early formed grains at the contact with fine‐grained material; (iii) compositional zoning of early formed plagioclase and K‐feldspar grains and quartz overgrowths documented by cathodoluminescence imaging; (iv) incipient development of rapakivi and anti‐rapakivi textures, and (iv) different crystallographic preferred orientation of early formed quartz and fine‐grained quartz. Mapping of the fine‐grained corridors interpreted to represent late melt channels reveal an interlinked network broadly following the S‐C fabric defined by pre‐existing magmatic grains. We conclude that early formed dykes provided a pathway exploited intermittently or continuously by new magma batches. New influxes of magma opened narrow channels and migrated through a microscopic network following predominantly grain boundaries along an S‐C fabric related to syn‐magmatic shearing. A mixed isotopic signature resulted not from the mixing of magmas, but from the micro‐scale interaction between new magma batches and previously crystallized magmatic rocks, through local equilibration.  相似文献

Mafic microgranular enclaves (MMEs) are widespread in the Horoz pluton with granodiorite and granite units. Rounded to elliptical MMEs have variable size (from a few centimetres up to metres) and are generally fine-grained with typical magmatic textures. The plagioclase compositions of the MMEs range from An18?CAn64 in the cores to An17?CAn29 in the rims, while that of the host rocks varies from An17 to An55 in the cores to An07 to An33 in the rims. The biotite is mostly eastonitic, and the calcic-amphibole is magnesio-hornblende and edenite. Oxygen fugacity estimates from both groups?? biotites suggest that the Horoz magma possibly crystallised at fO2 conditions above the nickel?Cnickel oxide (NNO) buffer. The significance of magma mixing in their genesis is highlighted by various petrographic and mineralogical characteristics such as resorption surfaces in plagioclases and amphibole; quartz ocelli rimmed by biotite and amphibole; sieve and boxy cellular textures, and sharp zoning discontinuities in plagioclase. The importance of magma mixing is also evident in the amphiboles of the host rocks, which are slightly richer in Si, Fe3+ and Mg in comparison with the amphiboles of MMEs. However, the compositional similarity of the plagioclase and biotite phenocrysts from MMEs and their host rocks suggests that the MMEs were predominantly equilibrated with their hosts. Evidence from petrography and mineral chemistry suggests that the adakitic Horoz MMEs could be developed from a mantle-derived, water-rich magma (>3 mass%) affected by a mixing of felsic melt at P >2.3?kbar, T >730°C.  相似文献

Monazite is a common accessory phase in felsic granulite ribbon mylonites exposed in the Upper Deck domain of the Athabasca granulite terrane, western Canadian Shield. Field relationships, bulk rock geochemistry and phase equilibria modelling in the Na2O–CaO–K2O–FeO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2–H2O–TiO2–Fe2O3 system are consistent with the garnet‐rich rocks representing the residual products of ultrahigh temperature melting of biotite‐bearing paragneisses driven by intraplating of mafic magma in continental lower crust. The c. 2.64–2.61 Ga Y‐rich resorbed monazite cores included in garnet are interpreted as relicts of detrital grains deposited on the Earth's surface after c. 2.61 Ga. Yttrium‐poor monazite domains in garnet are depleted in Sm and Gd and linked to fluid‐absent melting of biotite + plagioclase + quartz ± sillimanite during a prograde loading path from 0.8 to ≥1.4 GPa. The c. 2.61–2.55 Ga Y‐depleted, Th‐rich monazite domains crystallized in the presence of garnet + ternary feldspar ± orthopyroxene + peraluminous melt. The c. 2.58–2.52 Ga monazite rims depleted in Th + Ca and enriched in Eu are linked to localized melt extraction synchronous with growth of high‐pressure (HP) grossular‐rich garnet at the expense of plagioclase during crustal thickening, culminating at >950 °C. Re‐heating and dextral transpressive lower crustal reactivation at c. 1.9 Ga resulted in syn‐kinematic growth of (La + Ce)‐enriched monazite and a second generation of garnet, concurrent with recrystallization of feldspar and orthopyroxene at 1.0–1.2 GPa and 600–700 °C. Monazite grains in this study are marked by positive Eu‐anomalies relative to chondrite. A direct link is implied between Y, Sm, Eu and Gd in monazite and two major phases in continental lower crust: garnet and plagioclase. Positive Eu‐anomalies in lower crustal monazite associated with modally abundant garnet appear to be directly related to Eu‐enrichment and depletions of Y, Sm and Gd that are consequences of garnet growth and plagioclase breakdown during HP melting of peraluminous bulk compositions.  相似文献

The Merensky Reef hosts one of the largest PGE resources globally. It has been exploited for nearly 100 years, yet its origin remains unresolved. In the present study, we characterised eight samples of the reef at four localities in the western Bushveld Complex using micro-X-ray fluorescence and field emission scanning electron microscopy. Our results indicate that the Merensky Reef formed through a range of diverse processes.Textures exhibited by chromite grains at the base of the reef are consistent with supercooling and in situ growth. The local thickening of the Merensky chromitite layers within troughs in the floor rocks is most readily explained by granular flow.Annealing and deformation textures in pyroxenes of the Merensky pegmatoid bear testament to recrystallisation and deformation. The footwall rocks to the reef contain disseminations of PGE rich sulphides as well as olivine grains with peritectic reaction rims along their upper margins suggesting reactive downward flow of silicate and sulphide melts.Olivine-hosted melt inclusions containing Cl-rich apatite, sodic plagioclase, and phlogopite suggest the presence of highly evolved, volatile-rich melts.Pervasive reverse zonation of cumulus plagioclase in the footwall of the reef indicates dissolution or partial melting of plagioclase, possibly triggered by flux of heat, acidic fluids, or hydrous melt.Together, these data suggest that the reef formed through a combination of magmatic, hydrodynamic and hydromagmatic processes.  相似文献

Biotite‐rich selvedges developed between mafic schollen and semipelitic diatexite in migmatites at Lac Kénogami in the Grenville Province of Quebec. Mineral equilibria modelling indicates that partial melting occurred in the mid‐crust (4.8–5.8 kbar) in the range 820–850°C. The field relations, petrography, mineral chemistry and whole‐rock composition of selvedges along with their adjacent mafic schollen and host migmatites are documented for the first time. The selvedges measured in the field are relatively uniform in width (~1 cm wide) irrespective of the shape or size of their mafic scholle. In thin section, the petrographic boundary between mafic scholle and selvedge is defined by the appearance of biotite and the boundary between selvedge and diatexite by the change in microstructure for biotite, garnet, plagioclase and quartz. Three subtypes of selvedges are identified according to mineral assemblage and microstructure. Subtype I have orthopyroxene but of different microstructure and Mg# to orthopyroxene in the mafic scholle; subtype II contain garnet with many mineral inclusions, especially of ilmenite, in contrast to garnet in the diatexite host which has few inclusions; subtype III lack orthopyroxene or garnet, but has abundant apatite. Profiles showing the change in plagioclase composition from the mafic schollen across the selvedge and into the diatexite show that each subtype of selvedge has a characteristic pattern. Four types of biotite are identified in the selvedges and host diatexite based on their microstructural characteristics. (a) Residual biotite forms small rounded red‐brown grains, mostly as inclusions in peritectic cordierite and garnet in diatexite; (b) selvedge biotite forms tabular subhedral grains with high respect ratio; (c) diatexite biotite forms tabular subhedral grains common in the matrix of the diatexite; and (d) retrograde biotite that partially replaces peritectic cordierite and garnet in the diatexite. The four groups of biotite are also discriminated by their major element (EMPA) and trace elements (LA‐Q‐ICP‐MS) compositions. Residual biotite is high in TiO2 and low in Sc and S, whereas retrograde biotite has high Al2O3, but low Sc and Cr. Selvedge and diatexite biotite are generally very similar, but selvedge biotite has higher Sc and S contents. Whole‐rock compositional profiles across the selvedges constructed from micro‐XRF and LA‐Q‐ICP‐MS analyses show: (a) Al2O3, FeO, MgO and CaO all decrease from mafic scholle across the selvedge and into the diatexite; (b) Na2O is lowest in the mafic scholle, rises through the selvedge and reaches its maximum about 20–30 mm into the diatexite host; (c) K2O is lowest in the mafic scholle and reaches its highest value in the first half of the selvedge, then declines before reaching a higher, but intermediate value, about 20 mm into the diatexite. Of the trace elements, Cs and Rb show distributions very similar to K2O.  相似文献

In-situ migmatite and hybrid diatexite at Mt Stafford, central Australia   总被引:3,自引:1,他引:3
Metasedimentary gneisses show a rapid change in grade within a 10-km-wide low- P /high- T  regional aureole at Mt Stafford, Arunta Block, central Australia. Migmatites occur in all but the lowermost of five metamorphic zones, which are characterized by: (1) muscovite–quartz schist; (2) andalusite–cordierite–K-feldspar granofels with small melt segregations; (3) spinel–sillimanite–cordierite–K-feldspar migmatite; (4) garnet–orthopyroxene–cordierite migmatite and minor diatexite; and (5) biotite–cordierite–plagioclase diatexite that shows a transition to granite. A subsolidus unit comprising interbedded sandstone and siltstone is equivalent to bedded migmatite , the main rock type in Zones 2–4. Mesoscopic textures and migmatite classification of this unit vary with grade. In Zone 2, metatexite is developed in siltstone layers that are separated by quartz-rich, unmelted metapsammite layers. Melt segregation was less efficient in Zones 3 and 4, where the dominant migmatite layering is a modified bedding. High proportions of melt were present in Zone 4, in which schlieren migmatite is transitional between bedded migmatite and metapelite-sourced diatexite. The preservation of sedimentary structures and coexistence of melt reactants and products in Zone 4 metapelite imply that melting proceeded in situ without substantial migration of melt. Zone 5 biotite–cordierite–plagioclase diatexite carries rafts of bedded migmatite with strongly resorbed edges, as well as large K-feldspar and quartz augen. This unit of comparatively Ca-rich migmatites is inferred to have been formed by the mixing of locally derived and injected granitic melt.  相似文献

A coarsely porphyritic granite of great areal extent in northern Portugal is described from the locality of Cete, cast of Oporto. Geological and petrographical evidence go to show that it originated by consolidation from a magma of much the same composition. The relative ages and modes of formation of the constituents are deduced from textural relationships. A paragenetical table is given. Initial magmatic conditions are demonstrated by the preferential distribution of the primary accessories in biotite, the earliest of the main constituents. Rare andalusite seems to be an early constituent. Intrusion is correlated with early crystallization. The magma had been emplaced before oligoclase started to separate. The microclineperthite megacrysts are shown to have largely crystallized from a magmatic fluid, ending on a replacement stage. Foliation and lineation, defined by planar and linear parallelism of the megacrysts, have formed in situ, not as flow structures due to intrusion. Orientation of older biotite and plagioclase inclusions in the megacrysts is described. Perthite is inferred to have formed by exsolution. The orthomagmatic stage passed into a final metasomatic period, with replacement textures. The main generation of quartz is partly magmatic, partly metasomatic. Primary plagioclase in contact with microcline suffered decalcification of its borders. There also occur albite fringes around primary plagioclase which were formed by albitization of surrounding microcline. Six different habits of quartz, representing two or three generations, and two types of myrmekite are distinguished. A new type of myrmekite quartz is described. The features of the metasomatic or endoblastic stage are discussed. With 17 Figures and 2 Tables... One of the fundamental branches of plutonic geology, ... is concerned with textures as indicating the time-relations of the rock components. H. H. Read (1949)  相似文献

Tube-like schlieren structures occur at the boundary between two units of the Fürstenstein Intrusive Complex, the Tittling and the Saldenburg granites. We have analysed the magnetic fabrics, petrographic variation and geochemistry of key examples of these structures in order to test the hypothesis that they originated as granitic microdiapirs. The rims of the schlieren structures have high magnetic susceptibility compared to their interiors and surrounding granite due to the enrichment of biotite ± opaques. The low anisotropy that characterizes the AMS fabric is probably caused by magmatic flow. Hypersolidus microfabrics support this interpretation. Magnetic fabric orientation within the schlieren structures differs significantly from the NE–SW-trending magnetic foliation generally observed within the hosting Tittling granite. A steeply plunging magnetic lineation and a NNE–SSW girdle distribution of the magnetic foliation poles within the schlieren structures are consistent with the conical geometry of the schlieren structures evolved during the rise of the magma. Based on geochemistry, granite in the schlieren structures is interpreted to be differentiated melt expelled from the Tittling granite mush that formed after early crystallization of plagioclase. We suggest that the schlieren structures are pockets of residual melt of the Tittling granite that were mobilized buoyantly due to a thermal input from the neighbouring Saldenburg granite. The mafic rims of the schlieren structures formed as a result of early crystallization and subsequent accumulation due of the Bagnold effect. The results of the magnetic and geochemical investigations allow us to interpret the schlieren structures as diapiric in nature and consequently as “within-chamber diapirs” (sensu Weinberg et al., 2001).  相似文献

The St. Malo migmatitic dome represents an interesting example wherein migmatites arise from the anatexis of the surrounding gneisses. Petrographical and chemical data suggest that leucosome compositions are compatible with partial melting of the quartzo-feldsphathic fraction of the parent gneiss. The contribution of the incongruent melting of biotite to the melt does not exceed 5% of the parent rock.Petrogenetic modelling based on experimental data and assuming non modal batch melting show that the K, Rb, Ca, Sr, U and Th chemical patterns of these migmatites result in fact from the interaction of several mechanisms, namely: equilibrium partial melting, mixing between melts and refractory minerals (biotite and accessories), melt removal and late hydrothermal alteration. Zr, Y and Th which are mostly hosted in accessory minerals are significantly withheld from the melts and remain stored in melanosomes (metatexites) except when leucosomes are affected by mixing (diatexites). U is frequently enriched in the leucosomes as well as in some melanosomes suggesting external supply.  相似文献

The Devonian I-type St. Marys Porphyrite (388±1Ma) comprises two petrographically similar units, an 800 m thick pyroclastic sheet (compositionally dacite and rhyolite) and a subvolcanic feeder dyke. The pyroclastics are crystal-rich and contain (in order of decreasing abundance) plagioclase, quartz, biotite, augite, hypersthene and sanidine phenocrysts in an aphanitic groundmass. The early phenocryst assemblage clinopyroxene+orthopyroxene+plagioclase was followed by crystallisation of less magnesian pyroxene, more sodic plagioclase and biotite, quartz and K-feldspar. The phenocrysts crystallised at high temperature, between 1,000°-850° C, and at a pressure of 2.5±1 kb from a water undersaturated (<2.5 wt.%) magma in a chamber underlying the intrusive centre. At least two eruptive phases are present in the pyroclastic pile, each commencing with rhyolite. Bulk chemical variation probably reflects a zonation in the magma chamber prior to eruption. The low pressure phenocryst crystallisation conditions and the pyroxene Fe-enrichment trend with falling temperature support a fractional crystallisation model. The chemical variation can be explained by 20% fractional crystallisation involving plagioclase, quartz, biotite and pyroxene in proportions similar to modal phenocryst abundances.Volcanics like the St. Marys Porphyrite preserve evidence of their early magmatic history by quenching of mineral phases. Textural relationships and physico-chemical parameters deduced from the St. Marys Porphyrite are applicable to the interpretation of I-type granitoids in eastern Australia and elsewhere and constrain petrogenetic models for their genesis. Pyroxene cores of hornblende grains, pyroxene inclusions in plagioclase and corroded cores of plagioclase crystals may be formed through magmatic crystallisation and need not represent restite.  相似文献

The Tres Arboles ductile fault zone in the Eastern Sierras Pampeanas, central Argentina, experienced multiple ductile deformation and faulting events that involved a variety of textural and reaction hardening and softening processes. Much of the fault zone is characterized by a (D2) ultramylonite, composed of fine‐grained biotite + plagioclase, that lacks a well‐defined preferred orientation. The D2 fabric consists of a strong network of intergrown and interlocking grains that show little textural evidence for dislocation or dissolution creep. These ultramylonites contain gneissic rock fragments and porphyroclasts of plagioclase, sillimanite and garnet inherited from the gneissic and migmatitic protolith (D1) of the hangingwall. The assemblage of garnet + sillimanite + biotite suggests that D1‐related fabrics developed under upper amphibolite facies conditions, and the persistence of biotite + garnet + sillimanite + plagioclase suggests that the ultramylonite of D2 developed under middle amphibolite facies conditions. Greenschist facies, mylonitic shear bands (D3) locally overprint D2 ultramylonites. Fine‐grained folia of muscovite + chlorite ± biotite truncate earlier biotite + plagioclase textures, and coarser‐grained muscovite partially replaces relic sillimanite grains. Anorthite content of shear band (D3) plagioclase is c. An30, distinct from D1 and D2 plagioclase (c. An35). The anorthite content of D3 plagioclase is consistent with a pervasive grain boundary fluid that facilitated partial replacement of plagioclase by muscovite. Biotite is partially replaced by muscovite and/or chlorite, particularly in areas of inferred high strain. Quartz precipitated in porphyroclast pressure shadows and ribbons that help define the mylonitic fabric. All D3 reactions require the introduction of H+ and/or H2O, indicating an open system, and typically result in a volume decrease. Syntectonic D3 muscovite + quartz + chlorite preferentially grew in an orientation favourable for strain localization, which produced a strong textural softening. Strain localization occurred only where reactions progressed with the infiltration of aqueous fluids, on a scale of hundreds of micrometre. Local fracturing and microseismicity may have induced reactivation of the fault zone and the initial introduction of fluids. However, the predominant greenschist facies deformation (D3) along discrete shear bands was primarily a consequence of the localization of replacement reactions in a partially open system.

Partition coefficients (DBemineral/melt) for beryllium between hydrous granitic melt and alkali feldspars, plagioclase feldspars, quartz, dark mica, and white mica were determined by experiment at 200 MPa H2O as a function of temperature (650-900°C), activity of Be in melt (trace levels to beryl saturation), bulk composition, and thermal run direction. At trace levels, Be is compatible in plagioclase of An31 (1.84 at 700°C) and muscovite (1.35 at 700°C) but incompatible in biotite (0.39-0.54 from 650-800°C), alkali feldspar (0.38-0.19 from 680-850°C), quartz (0.24 at 800°C), and albite (0.10 at 750°C). The partition coefficients are different at saturation of the melt in beryl: lower in the case of plagioclase of An31 (0.89 at 700°C), muscovite (0.87 at 700°C), biotite (0.18-0.08 from 675-800°C), alkali feldspar (0.18-0.14 from 680-700°C), and quartz (0.17-0.08 from 750-800°C), but higher in the case of albite (0.37 at 750°C).With other data sources, these new partition coefficients were utilized to track, first, the distribution of Be between aluminous quartzofeldspathic source rocks and their anatectic melts, and second, the dispersion or concentration of Be in melt through igneous crystal fractionation of different magma types (e.g., S-type, I-type) up to beryl-saturated granitic pegmatites and, finally, into their hydrothermal aureoles. Among the rock-forming minerals, cordierite, calcic oligoclase, and muscovite (in this order) control the fate of Be because of the compatibility of Be in these phases. In general, beryl-bearing pegmatites can arise only after extended crystal fractionation of large magma batches (to F, fraction of melt remaining, ≤0.05); granitic magmas that originate from cordierite-bearing protoliths or that contain large modal quantities of calcic oligoclase will not achieve beryl saturation at any point in their evolution.  相似文献
