In the first part of this work, the empirical correlation of stellar surface brightness F V with ( I c− K ) broad-band colour is investigated by using a sample of stars cooler than the Sun. A bilinear correlation is found to represent well the brightness of G, K and M giant stars. The change in slope occurs at ( I c− K )∼2.1 or at about the transition from K to M spectral types. The same relationship is also investigated for dwarf stars and found to be distinctly different from that of the giants. The dwarf star correlation differs by an average of −0.4 in ( I c− K ) or by a maximum in F V of ∼−0.1, positioning it below that of the giants, with both trends tending towards convergence for the hotter stars in our sample. The flux distribution derived from the F V −( I c− K ) relationship for the giant stars, together with that derived from an F V −( V − K ) relationship and the blackbody flux distribution, is then utilized to compute synthetic light V and colour ( V − R )c, ( V − I )c and ( V − K ) curves of cool spotted stars. We investigate the effects on the amplitudes of the curves by using these F V –colour relations and by assuming the effective gravity of the spots to be lower than the gravity of the unspotted photosphere. We find that the amplitudes produced by using the F V −( I c− K ) relationship are larger than those produced by the other two brightness correlations, meaning smaller and/or warmer spots.  相似文献

We present angular diameters for 42 Luminosity Class (LC) I stars and 32 LC II stars that have been interferometrically determined with the Palomar Testbed Interferometer. Derived values of radius and effective temperature are established for these objects, and an empirical calibration of these parameters for supergiants will be presented as a function of spectral type and colours. For the effective temperature versus  ( V − K )0  colour, we find an empirical calibration with a median deviation of  Δ T = 70 K  in the range of  0.7 < ( V − K )0 < 5.1  for LC I stars; for LC II, the median deviation is  Δ T = 120 K  from  0.4 < ( V − K )0 < 4.3  . Effective temperature as a function of spectral type is also calibrated from these data, but shows significantly more scatter than the T EFF versus  ( V − K )0  relationship. No deviation of T EFF versus spectral type is seen for these high-luminosity objects relative to LC II giants. Directly determined diameters range up to  400 R  , though are limited by poor distance determinations, which dominate the error estimates. These temperature and radii measures reflect a direct calibration of these parameters for supergiants from empirical means.  相似文献

We present combined optical/near-infrared photometry ( BVIK ) for six open clusters – M35, M37, NGC 1817, NGC 2477, NGC 2420 and M67. The open clusters span an age range from 150 Myr to 4 Gyr and have metal abundances from  [Fe/H]=−0.27  to +0.09 dex. We have utilized these data to test the robustness of theoretical main sequences constructed by several groups as denoted by the following designations – Padova, Baraffe, Y2, Geneva and Siess. The comparisons of the models with the observations have been performed in the  [ MV , ( B − V )0], [ MV , ( V − I )0]  and  [ MV , ( V − K )0]  colour–magnitude diagrams as well as the distance-independent  [( V − K )0, ( B − V )0]  and  [( V − K )0, ( V − I )0]  two-colour diagrams. We conclude that none of the theoretical models reproduces the observational data in a consistent manner over the magnitude and colour range of the unevolved main sequence. In particular, there are significant zero-point and shape differences between the models and the observations. We speculate that the crux of the problem lies in the precise mismatch between theoretical and observational colour–temperature relations. These results underscore the importance of pursuing the study of stellar structure and stellar modelling with even greater intensity.  相似文献

We present new determinations of bolometric corrections and effective temperature scales as a function of infrared optical colours, using a large data base of photometric observations of about 6500 Population II giants in Galactic globular clusters (GGCs), covering a wide range in metallicity (−2.0 < [Fe/H] < 0.0).   New relations for BC K versus ( V  −  K ) , ( J  −  K ) and BC V versus ( B  −  V ), ( V  −  I ), ( V  −  J ), and new calibrations for T eff, using both an empirical relation and model atmospheres, are provided.   Moreover, an empirical relation to derive the R parameter of the infrared flux method as a function of the stellar temperature is also presented.  相似文献

We present UBV ( RI )C photometry for 80 southern red and blue stars for use as additional standards. The data are tied to the Johnson UBV and Cousins ( RI )C systems and extend the range of the available stars for colour equation determination, especially in ( U − B ) for blue stars and ( V − R ) and ( V − I ) for red stars. Comparisons with published data are made and particularly good agreement is found with Bessell for the red (Gliese) stars.  相似文献

A new method of determining absolute visual magnitudes of early-type stars, based on averaging Hipparcos parallaxes ( ESA 1997 ) inside samples of the same spectrum and luminosity (Sp/L) classes, is proposed. The used sample consists of 6262 unreddened and reddened OB stars as well as 430 Be stars of luminosity classes Ia, Iab, Ib, II, III, IV and V. The colour excesses of the reddened stars have been calculated using the mean colour indices, according to the SIMBAD data base and the intrinsic ( B − V ) values calibrated for given Sp/L classes by Papaj, Wegner & Krełowski . The values of the total-to-selective extinction   RV = AV / E ( B − V )  for all reddened stars were calculated from the published near-infrared photometric measurements. The calculated visual magnitudes MV of OB and Be stars are compared to those published by Wegner in Paper I, and the earlier determinations of Schmidt-Kaler. Generally, the new values of MV agree well with those given in Paper I, except those for O stars which are systematically brighter than the earlier estimates. The mean absolute magnitudes published by Schmidt-Kaler are generally brighter (except OB stars of luminosity class V) than those determined in this paper.  相似文献

The I − Z colour has recently been shown to be a good temperature indicator for M dwarfs. We present the first IZ photometry of a small sample of L dwarfs ranging in spectral type from L0.5V to L6.0V. We find that the I − Z colour is not a good temperature indicator for objects between L1V and L5V, such objects having colours that overlap with mid M dwarfs. We attribute this to the reduction in the strength of the TiO and VO bands in the L dwarfs, which are the dominant opacity source in the I band for late M dwarfs. Beyond L5V, I − Z appears to be a reasonable indicator. This has important implications for the planning of optical surveys for cool objects in clusters and the field. For example, I − Z will cease to be a good method of identifying brown dwarfs in the Pleiades below around 0.04 M, and at around 0.075 M in the Hyades and Praesepe.  相似文献

The absolute visual magnitudes, MV , of A–M stars are based on calculated Hipparcos trigonometric parallaxes. The sample used consists of 30 986 unreddened and reddened A–M stars in luminosity classes Ia, Iab, Ib, II, III, IV and V. The colour excesses of the reddened stars were calculated using the mean colour indices, according to the SIMBAD data base and the intrinsic B − V values calibrated for the given spectral types and luminosity classes by Schmidt-Kaler. The values of the total-to-selective extinction,   RV = AV / E ( B − V )  , for all the reddened stars were calculated from previously published near-infrared photometric measurements. The calculated visual magnitudes, MV , of A–M stars compare with the earlier determinations of Schmidt-Kaler. The mean absolute magnitudes published by Schmidt-Kaler are generally brighter (except for the stars in luminosity classes V and IV) than those determined in this paper.  相似文献

In this paper, by assuming the equilibrium temperatures of RRab Lyrae variables defined by Carney, Storm & Jones as correct we show that temperatures derived from ( B − V ) colour (mean colour over the pulsational cycle calculated on the magnitude scale) transformations by Bessel, Castelli & Plez are consistent with the Carney et al. equilibrium temperatures within a probable error of δ  log  T e =±0.003 . As a consequence, it is shown that the pulsational temperature scale temperature–period–blue amplitude [ T eff= f ( P , A B )] relation provided by De Santis, who studied the ( B − V ) colour of about 70 stars of Lub's sample, is a suitable relation, being reddening- and metallicity-free, to calculate equilibrium temperatures for RRab variables. This relation is independent of variable mass and luminosity within a large range of period-shift from the mean period–amplitude relation valid for Lub's sample of variables. On the contrary, it is also shown that a temperature–amplitude–metallicity relation is strictly dependent on the period–amplitude relation of the sample used for calibrating it: we prove that this means it is dependent on both the mass and luminosity variations of variables.  相似文献

We present a new Cepheid reddening and effective temperature scale based on the uvby photometry published in the first paper of this series. Using all available information about the companion stars in Cepheids with bright blue secondaries, we remove their light from the observed light and colour curves. The resulting corrections are as large as 0.05–0.15 mag in several cases for different colour indices. A new photometric approach based on the ( b  −  y ) versus ( B  − V ) two-colour diagram is tested with three other previous calibrations taken from the literature. Two uvby relations in earlier studies turn out to be the most reliable and consistent, and so they are used in deriving colour excesses. We determine systematically higher reddenings for Cepheids with a significant secondary light correction. The dereddened Stro¨mgren colours are calibrated in terms of T eff and log  g using the most recent synthetic colour grids. Our temperature scale is very close to that of Kraft, which is supported by other recent temperature determinations using the infrared flux method or Geneva photometry. The photometric gravities fit some of the earlier theoretical and observational (mainly spectroscopic) results very well.  相似文献

The results of more than 100 h of CCD photometric monitoring of 10 L dwarfs and two T dwarfs are presented. Reasonable evidence is shown for I C band variability in DENIS 0255−4700, DENIS 1705−0516 and 2M 2104−1037. Substantial brightening of the T dwarf binary ε Indi Bab was observed over the course of 3.6 h; it is unlikely that this could have been caused by surface spots. No unequivocal variability could be detected in the R C band.  相似文献

We present a Roche tomography reconstruction of the secondary star in the cataclysmic variable AE Aqr. The tomogram reveals several surface inhomogeneities that are due to the presence of large, cool star-spots. In addition to a number of lower latitude spots, the maps also show the presence of a large, high-latitude spot similar to that seen in Doppler images of rapidly rotating isolated stars, and a relative paucity of spots at a latitude of 40°. In total, we estimate that some 18 per cent of the Northern hemisphere of AE Aqr is spotted.
We have also applied the entropy landscape technique to determine accurate parameters for the binary system. We obtain optimal masses   M 1= 0.74 M, M 2= 0.50 M  , a systemic velocity  γ=−63 km s−1  and an orbital inclination   i = 66°  .
Given that this is the first study to successfully image star-spots on the secondary star in a cataclysmic variable, we discuss the role that further studies of this kind may play in our understanding of these binaries.  相似文献

We use accurate absolute proper motions and Two-Micron All-Sky Survey   Ks   -band apparent magnitudes for 364 Galactic RR Lyrae variables to determine the kinematical parameters of the Galactic RR Lyrae population and constrain the zero-point of the   Ks   -band period–luminosity relation for these stars via statistical parallax. We find the mean velocities of the halo- and thick-disc RR Lyrae populations in the solar neighbourhood to be  [ U 0(Halo), V 0(Halo), W 0(Halo)]= (−12 ± 10, −217 ± 9, −6 ± 6) km s−1  and  [ U 0(Disc), V 0(Disc), W 0(Disc)]= (−15 ± 7, −44 ± 7, −25 ± 5) km s−1  , respectively, and the corresponding components of the velocity-dispersion ellipsoids,  [σ VR (Halo), σ V θ(Halo), σ W (Halo)]= (167 ± 9, 86 ± 6, 78 ± 5) km s−1  and  [σ VR (Disc), σ V θ(Disc), σ W (Disc)]= (55 ± 7, 44 ± 6, 30 ± 4) km s−1  , respectively. The fraction of thick-disc stars is estimated at  0.25 ± 0.03  . The corrected infrared period–luminosity relation is     , implying a Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) distance modulus of  18.27 ± 0.08  and a solar Galactocentric distance of  7.58 ± 0.40 kpc  . Our results suggest no or slightly prograde rotation for the population of halo RR Lyraes in the Milky Way.  相似文献

I explore the consequences of making the RR Lyrae and clump giant distance scales consistent in the solar neighbourhood, Galactic bulge and Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). I employ two major assumptions: (i) that the absolute magnitude–metallicity, M V (RR)–[Fe/H], relation for RR Lyrae stars is universal, and (ii) that absolute I magnitudes of clump giants, M I (RC), in Baade's Window are known (e.g. can be inferred from the local Hipparcos -based calibration or theoretical modelling). A comparison between the solar neighbourhood and Baade's Window sets M V (RR) at [Fe/H]=−1.6 in the range (0.59±0.05, 0.70±0.05), somewhat brighter than the statistical parallax solution. More luminous RR Lyrae stars imply younger globular clusters, which would be in better agreement with the conclusions from the currently favoured stellar evolution and cosmological models. A comparison between Baade's Window and the LMC sets M LMC(RC) I in the range (−0.33±0.09,−0.53±0.09). The distance modulus to the LMC is μ LMC∈(18.24±0.08,18.44±0.07). Unlike M LMC(RC) I , this range in μ LMC does not depend on the adopted value of the dereddened LMC clump magnitude, I LMC(RC)0. I argue that the currently available information is insufficient to select the correct distance scale with high confidence.  相似文献

The sdB star PG 1336−018 is found to be a very short-period eclipsing binary system, remarkably similar to the previously unique system HW Vir. In addition, and unlike HW Vir, the sdB star in the PG 1336 system shows rapid oscillations of the type found in the recently discovered sdB pulsators, or EC 14026 stars. The orbital period, 0.101 0174 d, is one of the shortest known for a detached binary. Analysis of photoelectric and CCD photometry reveals pulsation periods near 184 and 141 s, with semi-amplitudes of ∼0.01 and ∼0.005 mag respectively. Both oscillations might have variable amplitude, and it is probable that other frequencies are present with amplitudes ∼0.003 mag or less. The 184- and 141-s pulsations are in the range of periods predicted by models for hot horizontal-branch stars. Analysis of medium-dispersion spectrograms yields T eff=33 000±1000 K and log g =5.7±0.1 for the sdB primary star, a radial velocity semi-amplitude K 1=78±3 km s−1 and a system velocity γ=6±2 km s−1. Spectrograms from the IUE Final Archive give T eff=33 000±3000 K and E ( B − V )=0.05 for log g =6.0 models. The derived angular radius leads to a distance of 710±50 pc for the system, and an absolute magnitude for the sdB star of +4.1±0.2. A preliminary analysis of U , V and R light curves indicates the orbital inclination to be near 81° and the relative radii to be r 1=0.19 and r 2=0.205. Assuming the mass of the sdB primary to be 0.5 M⊙ leads to a mass ratio q =0.3 for the system, and indicates that the secondary is a late-type dwarf of type ∼M5. As with HW Vir, it is necessary to invoke small limb-darkening coefficients and high albedos for the secondary star to obtain reasonable fits to the observed light curves.  相似文献

Optical spectroscopy of CPD −59° 2635, one of the O-type stars in the open cluster Trumpler 16 in the Carina Nebula, reveals this star to be a double-lined binary system. We have obtained the first radial velocity orbit for this system, consisting of a circular solution with a period of 2.2999 d and semi-amplitudes of 208 and 273 km s−1. This results in minimum masses of 15 and 11 M for the binary components of CPD −59° 2635, which we classified as O8V and O9.5V, although spectral type variations of the order of 1 subclass, which we identify as the Struve–Sahade effect , seem to be present in both components. From ROSAT HRI observations of CPD −59° 2635 we determine a luminosity ratio log( L x/ L bol)≈−7 , which is similar to that observed for other O-type stars in the Carina Nebula region. No evidence of light variations is present in the available optical or X-ray data sets.  相似文献

We present a new method for determining physical parameters of RRab variables exclusively from multicolour light curves. Our method is an inverse photometric Baade–Wesselink analysis which, using a non-linear least-squares algorithm, searches for the effective temperature ( T eff) and pulsational velocity ( V p) curves and other physical parameters that best fit the observed light curves, utilizing synthetic colours and bolometric corrections from static atmosphere models. The T eff and V p curves are initially derived from empirical relations then they are varied by the fitting algorithm. The method yields the variations and the absolute values of the radius, the effective temperature, the visual brightness and the luminosity of individual objects. Distance and mass are also determined. The method is tested on nine RRab stars subjected to Baade–Wesselink analyses earlier by several authors. The physical parameters derived by our method using only the light-curve data of these stars are well within their possible ranges defined by direct Baade–Wesselink and other techniques. A new empirical relation between the I C magnitude and the pulsational velocity is also presented, which allows to construct the V p curve of an RRab star purely from photometric observations to an accuracy of about 3.5 km s−1.  相似文献

We report the detection of extended infrared emission 5.2 kpc above the plane of the edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 5907 in the J K bands. This provides confirmation at two other wavelengths of the R -band result of Sackett et al. The halo J − K colour is found to be 1.3 ± 0.3. If we make the assumption that the halo emission is of the form necessary to give a flat rotation curve at large radii, with a power-law index in projection of −1.0, the K surface brightness, M/LK ratio and R − K colour are found to be 23.0 mag arcsec−2, 100 and 3.5 respectively, at 95-arcsec radius. Adopting a halo index of −2.5 in projection, typical of known stellar haloes but inconsistent with the halo measured by Sackett et al., the K surface brightness at 95 arcsec drops to 24.0 mag arcsec−2 and the J − K colour to 2.5, while the M/LK ratio is undetermined since such a halo would be unrelated to the dark matter component. If the emission is interpreted as arising from the massive halo, then it is broadly consistent with a population of stars at the very lowest masses, possibly extending into the brown dwarf regime.  相似文献

We study the sodium D lines (D1: 5895.92 Å; D2: 5889.95 Å) in late-type dwarf stars. The stars have spectral types between F6 and M5.5 ( B − V between 0.457 and 1.807) and metallicity between  [Fe/H]=−0.82  and 0.6. We obtained medium-resolution echelle spectra using the 2.15-m telescope at the Argentinian observatory Complejo Astronómico El Leoncito (CASLEO). The observations have been performed periodically since 1999. The spectra were calibrated in wavelength and in flux. A definition of the pseudo-continuum level is found for all our observations. We also define a continuum level for calibration purposes. The equivalent width of the D lines is computed in detail for all our spectra and related to the colour index ( B − V ) of the stars. When possible, we perform a careful comparison with previous studies. Finally, we construct a spectral index  ( R 'D)  as the ratio between the flux in the D lines and the bolometric flux. We find that, once corrected for the photospheric contribution, this index can be used as a chromospheric activity indicator in stars with a high level of activity. Additionally, we find that combining some of our results, we obtain a method to calibrate in flux stars of unknown colour.  相似文献

We present high-resolution Utrecht Echelle Spectrograph spectra of the quasar PHL 957, obtained in order to study the foreground damped Lyα (DLA) galaxy at z =2.309. Measurements of absorption lines lead to accurate abundance determinations of Fe, S and N which complement measurements of Zn, Cr and Ni already available for this system. We find [Fe/H]=−2.0±0.1, [S/H]=−1.54±0.06 and [N/H]=−2.76±0.07. The ratio [Fe/Zn]=−0.44 provides evidence that ≈74 per cent of iron and ≈28 per cent of zinc are locked into dust grains with a dust-to-gas ratio of ≈3 per cent of the Galactic one. The total iron content in both gas and dust in the DLA system is [Fe/H]=−1.4. This confirms a rather low metallicity in the galaxy, which is in the early stages of its chemical evolution. The detection of S ii allows us to measure the S ii /Zn ii ratio, which is a unique diagnostic tool for tracing back its chemical history, since it is not affected by the presence of dust. Surprisingly, the resulting relative abundance is [S/Zn]=0.0±0.1, at variance with the overabundance found in the Galactic halo stars with similar metallicity. We emphasize that the [S/Zn] ratio is solar in all the three DLA absorbers with extant data. Upper limits are also found for Mn, Mg, O and P and, once the dust depletion is accounted for, we obtain [Mg/Fe]c<+0.2, [O/Fe]c<+0.4, [Mn/Fe]c<+0.0 and [P/Fe]c<−0.7. The [α/Fe] values do not support Galactic halo-like abundances, implying that the chemical evolution of this young galaxy is not reproducing the evolution of our own Galaxy.  相似文献
