Cosmic-ray-produced53Mn (t1/2 = 3.7 × 106years) has been measured in twenty Antarctic meteorites by neutron activation analysis.36Cl (t1/2 = 3.0 × 105years) has been measured in fourteen of these objects by tandem accelerator mass spectrometry. Cosmic ray exposure ages and terrestrial ages of the meteorites are calculated from these results and from rare gases.14C (t1/2 = 5740years) and26Al (t1/2 = 7.2 × 105years) data. The terrestrial ages range from 3 × 104 to 5 × 105 years. Many of the L3 Allan Hills chrondrites seem to be a single fall based on these results. In addition,10Be (t1/2 = 1.6 × 106years) and36Cl have been measured in six Antarctic ice samples. The first measurements of10Be/36Cl ratios in the ice core samples demonstrate a new dating method for ice.  相似文献

Cosmic-ray-produced53Mn (t1/2 = 3.7 × 106years) was measured in individual and groups of deep-sea iron and stony spherules by highly sensitive neutron activation analysis. The activities found were less than 20 dpm53Mn/kg Fe (10?5?10?6 dpm53Mn/sample) in iron spherules except one iron spherule whose activity was 241 ± 73 dpm53Mn/kg Fe. These low activities may indicate evaporative loss of53Mn due to heating in the earth's atmosphere. On the other hand, all stony spherules contained 200–260 dpm53Mn/kg Fe which is similar to chondritic values. These spherules may be ablation debris from large objects.  相似文献

Cosmic-ray-produced53Mn (t½ = 3.7 × 106years) has been determined by neutron activation analysis in twenty-two chondrites including three Antarctic meteorites: Yamato-7301 (j), -7305 (k) and -7304 (m).53Mn was also measured in four mesosiderites, three iron meteorites, Bencubbin (unique) and Udei Station (iron with silicate inclusions). In addition, preliminary results for10Be (1.6 × 106 years) were obtained in the Yamato meteorites using a low-background needle GM counter. Based on published values of rare gas ages, corrections were made for undersaturation; the average specific saturation activities of53Mn were found in the range 450 ± 90dpm53Mn/kg Fe in most of the chondrites and 490 ± 75dpm53Mn/kg Fe in the mesosiderites. Two meteorites had extremely low contents of53Mn: 102 ± 6 in Yamato-7301 and 48 ± 3dpm53Mn/kg Fe in Bondoc. The Bondoc mesosiderite was already known to have a low concentration of cosmogenic radionuclides due to its large pre-atmospheric size. Several possible mechanisms are discussed to explain the low53Mn activity in Yamato-7301: (1) long terrestrial age of about 7 m.y.; (2) low production rate of53Mn due to heavy pre-atmospheric shielding (>70cm); (3) multi-stage irradiation history resulting in an undersaturation of53Mn; and (4) a mechanism in which two or three of the above factors are combined. The ratio of53Mn production rate in Ni to that in Fe has been estimated to be 1/3, based on the measurements of53Mn in the metallic and silicate phases of St. Séverin meteorite, as well as on published results of some high-energy bombardment experiments.  相似文献

The reasons why53Mn (a cosmogenic radionuclide with a half-life of 3.7 × 106 y) appears as one of the best indicators of the presence of interplanetary dust are summarized. This paper reports the detection of53Mn in pre-1952 snow samples collected on the Eastern Antarctic Plateau in the vicinity of Plateau Station. The measurements were carried out by neutron activation and X-ray spectrometry on three samples weighing a few hundred kg and covering each the time interval 1935–1950. The specific activity of53Mn was found to be (0.82 ± 0.17) disint.min?1/103 tons of snow, corresponding to a deposition rate at Plateau Station of (2.2 ± 0.5) × 10?5 disint. min?1 m?2 y?1. The mean global deposition rate would be three times higher if53Mn were assumed to behave in the same way as stratospheric90Sr. By comparing this figure with existing data on the meteorite flux reaching the earth and with the galactic and solar production rates of53Mn, it is concluded that the bulk of the53Mn found at Plateau Station is associated with interplanetary dust in which it had been produced by the action of solar protons on iron. The deposition rate of extra-terrestrial dust-borne iron must be between 1.3 × 10?5 and 1.3 × 10?4 g m?2 y?1 at Plateau Station. These results support jointly with other studies the concept of an interplanetary zodiacal cloud of dust with a chemical composition and density not essentially different from chondritic meteorites, with a relatively ‘flat’ grain size distribution and a mass influx to the earth of the order of 105 tons/y.  相似文献

Cosmic-ray produced 36Cl(t1/2 = 3.0 × 105 years) has been measured in four Antarctic meteorites and one sample of Antarctic ice using a tandem Van de Graaff accelerator as an ultrasensitive mass spectrometer with the extremely low background level of 36Cl/Cl< 2 × 10?16. Results from this ion counting technique (applied here to extraterrestrial materals for the first time) are used to support a two-stage irradiation model for the Yamato-7301 and Allan Hills-76008 meteorites and to show a long terrestrial age (0.7 ± 0.1 m.y.) for Allan Hills-77002. Yamato-7304 has a terrestrial age of less than 0.1 m.y. The 36Cl content of the Antarctic ice sample from the Yamato Mountain area implies that the age of the ice cap at this site is less than one 36Cl half-life.  相似文献

Measurement of excess 234Th (t1/2 = 24.1 days) in surface sediment from 12 stations throughout Long Island Sound, U.S.A., demonstrates: (1) a mean (summer) sediment inventory of 3.6 dpm/cm2 consistent with complete, nearly instantaneous removal of 234Th from the overlying water and capture within the estuary, and (2) preferential association of excess 234Th with small particles and inventory build-ups in muddy bottom areas. There may also be a tendency for higher inventories in areas of high physical or biogenic reworking of surface sediments. A range of particle reworking rates (0–5 cm) from <0.01 × 10?6 to 1.6 × 10?6 cm2/s is found in the Sound with most values ~0.2?0.5 × 10?6 cm2/s. The inventory and reworking patterns demonstrate the high mobility, both horizontal and vertical, of particles in the estuary on 234Th decay time scales and are unequivocal evidence for control of reactive element distribution in the water column by the muddy regions of the basin.  相似文献

87Rb87Sr analysis of the Norton County achondrite has been achieved with special attention to the rubidium analysis. Enstatite crystals and polycrystalline material give an “age” of 4.48 ± 0.04 × 109 years and an initial ratio 87Sr/86SrI= 0.7005 ± 0.0004 (λ = 1.39 × 10?11yr?1, maximum errors). The feldspar component of the meteorite contains about 70% of the strontium and 30% of the rubidium of the whole sample, and does not lie on the isochron. Its model age relative to the strontium initial ratio of Allende is 4.6 × 109 years. The data are consistent with a complex history dealing with an incomplete isotopic reequilibration of the meteorite, 120 m.y. after its formation at 4.6 × 109 years, with an initial ratio similar to that of Allende.  相似文献

We present the distribution of226Ra in eight vertical profiles from the eastern Pacific. The profiles are located along a meridional trend near 125°W, from 43°S to 29°N. Surface226Ra concentrations are about 7 dpm/100 kg, except for the two stations south of 30°S where the higher values are due to the Antarctic influence. Deep waters show a distinctive south-to-north increase in the226Ra content, from about 26 to 41 dpm/100 kg near the bottom. Unlike in the Atlantic and Antarctic Oceans, the effect of226Ra injection from bottom sediments is clearly discernible in the area. The presence of this primary226Ra can be traced up to at least 1–1.5 km above the ocean floor, making this part of the sea bed among the strongest source regions for the oceanic226Ra. Numerical solutions of a two-dimensional vertical advection-diffusion model applied to the deep (1.2–4 km)226Ra data give the following set of best fits: upwelling velocity(Vz) = 3.5m/yr, vertical eddy diffusivity(Kz) = 0.6cm2/s, horizontal (north-south) eddy diffusivity(Ky) = 1 × 107cm2/s, and water-column regeneration flux of226Ra(J) = 3.3 × 10?5dpmkg?1yr?1 as an upper limit. These parametric values are in general agreement with one-dimensional (vertical) model fits for the Ra-Ba system. However, consideration of226Ra balance leads us to suspect the appropriateness of describing the vertical exchange processes in the eastern Pacific with constantVz and Kz. If future modeling is attempted, it may be preferable to treat the area as a diffusion-dominant mixing regime with depth-dependent diffusivities.  相似文献

Production rates of22Na (T1/2 = 2.6years) from aluminium by the action of cosmic rays are measured at the Mont Blanc (altitude 4600 m), the Aiguille du Midi (3840 m), and the Col du Lautaret (2070 m). They are2.3 ± 0.5,1.8 ± 0.3,and0.77 ± 0.18 atoms min?1 kg?1, respectively, in good agreement with the calculated production rates, 2.4, 1.7 and 0.6 atoms min?1 kg?1, respectively, at the three stations.Production rates of24Na (T1/2 = 15hours) from aluminium and magnesium are also measured at the Aiguille du Midi; the observed rates of3.4 ± 0.4and6.0 ± 1.7 atoms min?1 kg?1, respectively, agree well with the theoretically expected rates of 3.7 and 5.6 atoms min?1 kg?1.The production rates of3H,7Be,10Be,14C,22Na,26Al,36Cl,37Ar,39Ar,53Mn,54Mn, and55Fe in terrestrial rocks by the action of cosmic rays are calculated in order to show the possibility of applying the measurements of these cosmogenic radionuclides to the earth science.  相似文献

87Rb87Sr analyses of LL chondrites have been made in 10 whole rock meteorites, chondrules from Chainpur (LL3) and Soko Banja (LL4), density separates and chondrules from Guidder (LL5) and density separates from Jelica (LL6) and Ensisheim (LL6). Whole rocks define an isochron of age 4.486±0.020 Ga 87Rb=1.42×10?11a?1) and initial ratio (87Sr/86Sr)I=0.69887±0.00012. This is in agreement with the results for H- and E-type chondrites. Analyses for chondrules from Soko Banja yield a very good isochron of age 4.452±0.020 Ga and strontium initial ratio 0.69954±0.00024, and give an interval for metamorphism of (37±10)×106 a. A more poorly defined isochron is obtained for Jelica; the age is 4.423±0.041 Ga and the strontium initial ratio 0.69959±0.00029, indicating an interval for metamorphism of (70±60)×106 a. No isochron could be obtained for Chainpur. This could be due to terrestrial alteration or to a late isotopic disturbance of the meteorite. The87Rb-87Sr system is also disturbed in Guidder and Ensisheim, probably as a consequence of shock. These results are discussed in comparison with our former studies, and in relation with thermal metamorphism in the LL chondrite parent body(ies).  相似文献

The first224Ra (t1/2 = 3.64days) measurements from mixing zones of estuarine systems are presented for the Pee Dee River-Winyah Bay and Delaware Bay Estuaries. High-resolution gamma-ray spectrometry was used to determine224Ra,228Ra (t1/2 = 5.7years), and226Ra (t1/2 = 1622years) activity ratios. Desorption and diffusion from suspended and bottom sediments contributes to the non-conservative increases of the three isotopes in each systems. In Delaware Bay224Ra concentrations were nearly constant over the 2.5‰ to 15‰ salinity range where two turbidity maximum zones are located.228Th scavenging onto the suspended particles in the turbid zones may supply a regenerative source of224Ra in this system. Samples collected on the ebb and flood tide from a salt marsh along Delaware Bay have a 5-fold increase in224Ra from flood to ebb and 3- and 2-fold increases for228Ra and226Ra respectively, indicating salt marshes are another source of radium to estuarine waters.  相似文献

By modelling the observed distribution of210Pb and210Po in surface waters of the Pacific, residence times relative to particulate removal are determined. For the center of the North Pacific gyre these are τPo = 0.6years andτPb = 1.7years. The surface ocean τPb is determined by particulate transport rather than plankton settling. The fact that it is about two orders of magnitude smaller than τPb for the deep ocean implies a sharp change in the adsorptive quality of particles during descent through the water column.  相似文献

Radioactive and stable cosmogenic nuclides have been determined in the various fragments of the Kirin chondrite (H5). Experimental results obtained from our samples are described and compared with similar data obtained in other laboratories. Cosmogenic54Mn,22Na,60Co,26Al,53Mn,40K (in the metal phase), and light noble gases were measured. Based on these data, the irradiation history of this meteorite can be explained in terms of (1) a multi-stage exposure which involves a first-stage irradiation for 107 years and a second stage for about 4×105 years, and (2) depth effects in the productions of the nuclides in 4π(second stage) and 2π(first stage) geometries. These conclusions are consistent with those of our previous work which was based on a limited number of samples.  相似文献

Viscosity of anhydrous albite melt, determined by the falling-sphere method in the solid-media, piston-cylinder apparatus, decreases with increasing pressure from 1.13 × 105 P at 1 atm to 1.8 × 104 P at 20 kbar at 1400°C. The rate of decrease in viscosity is larger between 12 and 15 kbar than in other pressure ranges examined. The density of the quenched albite melt increases with increasing pressure of quenching from 2.38 g/cm3 at 1 atm to 2.53 g/cm3 at 20 kbar. The rate of increase in density is largest at pressures between 15 and 20 kbar. The melting curve of albite shows an inflexion at about 16 kbar. These observations strongly suggest that structural changes of albite melt would take place effectively at pressures near 15 kbar. Melt of jadeite (NaAlSi2O6) composition shows very similar changes in viscosity and density and a melting curve inflexion at pressures near 10 kbar. Difference in pressure for the suggested effective structural changes of albite and jadeite melts is 5–6 kbar, which is nearly the same as that between the subsolidus reaction curves nepheline + albite= 2jadeite and albite=jadeite + quartz. The structural changes of the melts are, however, continuous and begin to take place at pressures lower than those of the crystalline phases.  相似文献

A87Rb-87Sr analysis of some enstatite meteorites has been made. Whole rocks plot on an isochron of age 4.508 ± 0.037b.y. and strontium initial ratio 0.69880 ± 0.00044 (2σ errors; λ87Rb= 1.42 × 10?11yr?1) . If the Norton County results are joined, we get an age of 4.516 ± 0.029b.y. and initial ratio of 0.69874 ± 0.00022. This result is indistinguishable from the whole rock isochron for H chondrites. It is interpreted as the age of condensation from the solar nebula. The identity of the87Sr/86Sr initial ratio with the ones for Allende white inclusions shows that this ratio was homogeneous in the solar nebula, and that the Rb-Sr fractionations observed between the different chondrite groups appeared only shortly before or during condensation accretion.Internal studies of the type-I enstatite chondrites Abee and Indarch and the intermediate-type Saint Mark's and Saint Sauveur have been done.Abee data scatter in the87Rb-87Sr diagram. For Indarch, Saint Mark's and Saint Sauveur, we obtained well-defined straight lines of “age” (T) and “initial ratio” (I): Indarch,T = 4.393 ± 0.043b.y.I = 0.7005 ± 0.0009; Saint Mark's,T = 4.335 ± 0.050b.y.I = 0.69979 ± 0.00022; Saint Sauveur,T = 4.457 ± 0.047b.y.I = 0.6993 ± 0.0014. Our result on Indarch agrees with the former result of Gopalan and Wetherill [5].A careful examination of the data shows that these straight lines are neither due to leaching effects by heavy liquids, nor result from terrestrial weathering. The “isochrons” for Indarch and Saint Sauveur can be mixing lines between enstatite and feldspar. The results are interpreted in terms of cosmochemical secondary effects: type-I and intermediate-type enstatite chondrites have been shocked 60–200 m.y. after their formation. This agrees with the idea of an early generalized bombardment of the inner solar system; this also indicates that type-I enstatite chondrites were rather situated in the outershells of their parent body and might be at the origin of the scatter of I-Xe ages of enstatite meteorites.Whole rock and enstatite from Bishopville, Cumberland Falls and Mayo Belwa have also been analysed. In these three aubrites, the87Rb-87Sr system is perturbed. Our Bishopsville sample might not be fresh and this makes the significance of our results uncertain. Cumberland Falls and Mayo Belwa probably suffered relatively recent shocks and open-system redistribution of Rb and Sr.  相似文献

The decay constantf238) for the spontaneous fission of238U was re-determined by means of a man-made uranium glass of known age (126 yr). The spontaneous U fission tracks that had accumulated since the date of manufacture were counted on internal faces of the glass with an error of less than 1.7%. No thermal annealing of the spontaneous tracks was observed. The U content was determined by induced fission tracks. The value obtained forλf238 is(8.57 ± 0.42) × 10?17yr?1. Main sources of error are the date of glass melting and the determination of the thermal neutron dose.  相似文献

A14C balance for the Eastern Caribbean deep water indicates the average inflow of Atlantic water into the basin to be 2.3 × 105 m3/sec (±30%), or about 2–4 times the values estimated previously. The balance uses a model representation of the deep-water turnover, and is based on14C concentrations at a station in the Venezuelan Basin which average Δ14C= 89‰ below 800 m depth with a total range of only 9‰, as well as on a14C concentration of the Atlantic inflow of Δ14C= ?71%. as obtained from measurements outside the Antilles Arch. The turnover time of the basin water below 2500 m depth is 55 years, which corresponds to an average upwelling velocity at this depth of about 35 m/year. With such upwelling, the temperature profile below 1800 m (the depth of the sill determining the inflow of new water) requires a vertical eddy diffusivity of about 5 cm2/sec. The oxygen consumption, and silica and CO2 regeneration, rates below 2500 m depth are obtained as ?0.18, + 0.08, and + 0.2 μmole kg?1 yr?1, respectively. The CO2 regeneration has but a negligible effect on the14C balance.  相似文献

Unsupported226Ra (t12 = 1620years) in marine sediments can provide a basis for measuring rates of accumulation of the order of centimeters per thousand years. The excess radium apparently enters the sediments incorporated in phytoplankton. The sensitivity of the method depends upon the initial value of the unsupported226Ra and of the value of230Th, a parent of226Ra, in the sedimentary components.226Ra dating was applied to a sediment taken from the slope of the San Clemente Basin in the Southern California coastal region. Rates of sedimentation over two half-lives of the nuclide were found to be either 5.2 or 5.3 cm/1000 years depending upon which of two models for the geochronology is used. One model assumes that the230Th brings to the deposit an amount of226Ra in equilibrium with it. The other is based upon the growth of the226Ra from the230Th in the sedimentary components.238+239Pu and210Pb levels in the upper strata indicated sedimentation rates of the order of 100–500 cm/1000 years, i.e. much faster accumulations. We suggest these derived rates are spurious and reflect bioturbative activities of surface-living organisms.  相似文献

14C has been measured in three North American and seven Antarctic meteorites with the Chalk River MP tandem accelerator. In most cases cosmogenic14C, which is tightly bound, was separated from absorbed atmospheric radiocarbon by stepwise heating extractions. Terrestrial ages obtained by comparing cosmogenic14C in the meteorite to that in Bruderheim are (7.2 ± 0.6) × 103 years for Yamato 7304, (11.6 ± 0.4) × 103 years for Estacado, and range from (32.7 ± 0.5) × 103 to (41.0 ± 0.8) × 103 years for six meteorites recovered at Allan Hills and its vicinity. The present upper limit to age determination by the accelerator method varies from 50 × 103 to 70 × 103 years depending upon mass and carbon content of the sample. The natural limit caused by cosmic ray production of14C in silicate rocks at 2000 m elevation is estimated to be (55 ± 5) × 103 years. “Weathering ages” were estimated for the Antarctic meteorites from the specific activity of loosely-bound CO2 considered to be absorbed from the terrestrial atmosphere on weathering. The accelerator measurements are in accordance with previous low-level counting measurements but have higher precision and sensitivity.  相似文献
