Due to large deserts on Earth surface a thorough understanding of climate change, landscape evolution and geomorphological processes having occurred in deserts is crucial for Earth System Science. The landscapes in deserts are, however, diverse and different over the globe with regard to their geomorphological nature, human activities and geological histories. In the last decades a great number of efforts have been put to the investigation of the initial timing of the occurrence of arid climate, e. g. in northwestern China. Silty sediments in the downwind directions have been used to deduce the histories of deserts. In general, there is a lack of knowledge about processes and landscapes in Chinese drylands between the initial Miocene silt sedimentation at desert margins and the late Quaternary multiple occurrences of wetter climate with assumed large lakes in many of the deserts in northern China. The geomorphological concept of three primary triggering factors, i.e., the sediment supply, sediment availability and transport capacity of wind, and additionally the underground geology need to be fully considered for a better understanding of the environmental histories of sand seas which should not be viewed as equivalent for deserts because sand seas cover between < 1% and ca. 45% of the desert areas in various continents dependent on a complex interaction between various processes of both exogenous and endogenous origins.  相似文献

On the undrained strain-induced anisotropy of loose sand   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
An experimental study was carried out to investigate the effects of previous deviatoric strain histories on the undrained behaviour of loose and saturated Toyoura sand and compared with known results of Hostun RF sand. From an initial isotropic stress state, recent deviatoric strain histories in the compression side of the triaxial plane were generated by a standard drained presheared cycle up to a specified mobilized stress ratio. Mainly, the fully liquefied, contractive, unstable and softening behaviour of loose sand was progressively transformed into the non-liquefied, dilative, fully stable and hardening behaviour of dense-like sand, while remaining within a narrow range of loose density. The paper validates and extends the current understanding of strain-induced anisotropy of loose sand. New experimental data support the directional dependency of the instability cone on the stress increment direction, suggest the bifurcation characteristics of loose sand and evidence the important role of past deviatoric strain histories.  相似文献

The effects of previous deviatoric strain histories on the undrained behaviour of very loose and saturated Hostun RF clean sand are investigated in this paper. From an initial isotropic stress state in the triaxial plane, strain histories are generated by isotropic consolidation followed by standard drained triaxial preshear or presheared cycle, either in compression or in extension, up to a desired value of axial strain or mobilized stress ratio. Deviatoric strain histories are achieved by having nearly the same void ratio at the beginning of the undrained shearing for all tested samples. Subsequent undrained behaviour in triaxial compression and extension is analyzed in detail. Previous deviatoric strain histories can progressively transform the compressive and unstable behaviour of loose sand into a dilative and stable behaviour of dense-like sand, while being loose. Experiments show a common response induced by recent strain histories in terms of effective stress paths, independently of the axial strain attained during the drained presheared cycle, a unique initial gradient of the effective stress paths, a progressive appearance of dilatancy, an evolution the undrained behaviour and a systematic partial static liquefaction associated with softer behaviour when sheared in the opposite direction of the initial presheared direction. This paper offers a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms of a specialized induced anisotropy created by simple linear stress paths in the classical triaxial plane.  相似文献

This study back analyzed deformation parameters of in situ sand through two excavation case histories in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Two main features are highlighted; deformation prediction based on monitoring data at the first excavation stage and in situ Young’s modulus evaluation for sand considering monitoring data at the overall excavation stages. The former tends to establish a reliable method to predict the wall deflection at the critical stage based on the data at the first stage and the latter to enrich the limited database of Young’s modulus correlation for sand, specifically applicable for deep excavations analysis. The two constitutive models, linear elastic perfectly plastic and non-linear stress–strain constitutive models, were selected. The stiffness parameters of the models were discretely distributed along the subdivided soil body mesh to reflect the effect of overburden pressure on the in situ soil. In addition, relationship between Standard Penetration Test value (SPT-N value) and Young’s modulus and relationships for estimating the in situ Young’s modulus of the Kaohsiung sand as a function of depth were evaluated. The results greatly enhanced a framework for estimating the in situ Young’s modulus of sand.  相似文献

In order to manage local rock aggregates efficiently, an inventory has been made of superficial sand materials in the Senegalese basin. A detailed geological study of sandy formations has been undertaken, and geotechnical tests were also performed in order to characterize the sands according to their mechanical properties. The geotechnical characteristics of the sands can be related to their geological histories thus allowing the geotechnical parameters to be estimated by field mapping.  相似文献

Recent earthquake case histories have revealed the liquefaction of mixtures of sand and fine particles during earthquakes. Different from earlier studies which placed an emphasis on characterisation of liquefaction in terms of the induced shear stress required to cause liquefaction, this study adopted a strain approach because excess pore-water pressure generation is controlled mainly by the level of induced shear strains. The current study includes the results of a set of laboratory tests carried out on sand specimens with the same relative densities and variation in the plastic fines (kaolinite or bentonite) contents ranging from 0 to either 30 % and consolidated at mean confining pressure of 100, 200 and 300 kPa using static triaxial test apparatus, in order to study the influence of fine content and other parameters on the undrained shear strength and liquefaction potential of clayey sand specimens; also, pore-water pressures in the specimens are discussed. Results of tests show that the peak strength decreases as the fines (kaolinite or bentonite) content increases up to a threshold content of fines (FCth) after which, increases in plastic fine content lead to improve the peak shear strength of specimens, and also the ultimate steady-state strength has been improved due to the increased in plastic fines content. Also, pore pressure build-up in clayey sands is generally slower than that observed in pure sand.  相似文献

The paper describes tests made on a small river to examine the practicability of measuring quantitatively, by tracer methods, sand transport occurring over a rippled bed in a natural channel. Three principal tracer methods, all previously verified under steady flow conditions in a laboratory channel, and identified as the spatial integration, time integration and steady dilution methods, were examined by introducing radioactive and fluorescent tracers to represent a narrow size fraction of the bed sand. The serious limitations of the time integration and steady dilution methods under conditions of unsteady solids discharge were exposed by a sudden flood discharge occurring during the course of the study. An approximate method, based on the time integration approach, but also requiring some spatial tracer data, is suggested, whereby an estimate of the transport is possible in the case of highly variable sand discharge. However, it is seen that in the sand case, the spatial integration method offers the most workable and informative tracer method for use in natural rivers. The results, by this method, were generally consistent with those given by the summation of the measured suspended-solids flux and the transport occurring either by surface creep or in close vicinity to the bed. The latter quantity is determined from the downstream advance of the ripple bed-forms, and methods are described for its derivation from ultrasonic echo sounder records of bed profiles. Finally sand transport values are calculated for a number of river discharges and for two laboratory channel tests using various well-known computational procedures—Einstein, Bagnold, modified Einstein, Meyer-Peter and Muller, and Laursen procedures. Significant differences in the computed values for individual flow conditions are observed.  相似文献

Summary Data is presented on case histories of subsidence damage occurring over abandoned room and pillar mines in Illinois. The major modes of behaviour and damage in houses from sag-subsidence are described and summarized. The houses rested on crawl-space and basement foundations built from concrete and masonry. The prevalent mode of failure of bearing walls was inward bending. Failure is analysed and conventional design procedures are used to evaluate foundation failure.  相似文献

We show how sedimentary charcoal records from multiple sites within a single landscape can be used to compare fire histories and reveal small scale patterns in fire regimes. Our objective is to develop strategies for classifying and comparing late-Holocene charcoal records in Midwestern oak- and pine-dominated sand plain ecosystems where fire regimes include a mix of surface and crown fires. Using standard techniques for the analysis of charcoal from lake sediments, we compiled 1000- to 4000-yr-long records of charcoal accumulation and charcoal peak frequencies from 10 small lakes across a sand plain in northwestern Wisconsin. We used cluster analysis to identify six types of charcoal signatures that differ in their charcoal influx rates, amount of grass charcoal, and frequency and magnitude of charcoal peaks. The charcoal records demonstrate that while fire histories vary among sites, there are regional patterns in the occurrence of charcoal signature types that are consistent with expected differences in fire regimes based on regional climate and vegetation reconstructions. The fire histories also show periods of regional change in charcoal signatures occurring during times of regional climate changes at ~ 700, 1000, and 3500 cal yr BP.  相似文献

怒江河砂岩屑磷灰石裂变径迹结果与流域地貌演化   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
河流搬运沉积的河砂作为流域内地质体的平均产物,可以有效地揭示整个流域内区域性的地质体热史演化。对同一河流进行分段采样能够揭示更为详实的热史演化差异。本文对滇西境内怒江上游至下游采集了7个河砂样品进行磷灰石裂变径迹定年,主要年龄峰值依次为: 12.2 Ma和12.8 Ma, 7.7 Ma, 5.3 Ma、4.4 Ma和4.9 Ma, 7.3 Ma,总体上呈现出上游老、中游年轻、下游老的年龄格局。怒江中游河段相对年轻的流域热史经历说明中游河段较其他区域经受了构造地貌的快速演化。由于这一位置对应三江并流,而且气候作用与现代西南季风的水汽通道吻合,降雨量与上、下游流域截然不同。可以推断,气候因素导致了其快而新的构造地貌演化,促成代表年轻冷却历史信息的地质体被迅速剥露造就了怒江河道不同位置流域热史演化的差异。测得的7个样品所有年龄峰值可分为5个区段: 5.3~4.4 Ma、7.7~7.3 Ma、12.8~10.7 Ma、26.8~22.2.3 Ma、48.7~30.1 Ma,基本反映了流域范围新生代以来主要的热史演化阶段。此外,怒江不同河段河砂样品的分段性特征,证实河砂岩屑磷灰石裂变径迹分析方法在解释流域区域热史演化方面具有独特的优点。  相似文献

The paper mainly concerns the mechanical response of 2D dry dense sand specimens under shock loading. The problem is numerically analysed by means of a SEM dynamic code, within which an already conceived non‐local viscoplastic constitutive model characterized by a non‐associated flow rule and by an anisotropic strain hardening has been implemented. In particular the strain localization and time dependency of the material mechanical response are taken into consideration. Both rapid/static loading and dynamic histories are numerically simulated. In the first case, the time dependency of the material mechanical response can be captured by neglecting inertial effects, while in the second one the two factors are superimposed and the propagation of the stress waves within the specimen is discussed. The interest of these analyses derives from the fact that the diffusion phenomenon takes place within a specimen already localized. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

 The most commonly recognized sources of sand and gravel aggregate are the deposits of coastal, fluvial and glacial sedimentary processes. It is not commonly recognized that weathered bedrock is also an important source of sand and gravel aggregate. In the case of weathered sedimentary bedrock the product may be indistinguishable from modern sedimentary materials and deposits may be misidentified. Batson's quarry is a major sand and gravel aggregate resource for the rapidly developing region of north-eastern New South Wales. The deposit has previously been assumed to be a young sedimentary deposit, but detailed field examination and comparison with surrounding rock types indicates that it has formed from weathered Mesozoic sandstone bedrock. The extraction of weathered bedrock aggregate deposits has distinctive environmental implications because, unlike sedimentary aggregates, they are not restricted by the geometry of sedimentary environments and do not necessarily interfere with surface drainage systems. This study shows that the recognition of the geological origin of a resource is essential in order to determine its potential geographical extent, and thereby maximize its utilization and minimize land use conflict. The highly increasing demand for sand in Northeastern Brazil, due to governmental economic incentive focused to this region, has necessitated the opening of new extraction mines, generally without adequate environmental control. This study aimed to assess several sand extraction activities in the Recôncavo territory, Bahia state—area with high variability in sedimentary deposits—by evaluating the quality of the sand and the extraction impacts according to the geological basement. The methodology consisted of field research, using satellite images and maps for characterization, application of the environmental and economic impact checklists, and analysis of organic matter, particle size distribution, and salt content in 35 samples from different sand mines. The sands were classified as white sand (from Neossols/weathered aeolian sandstones), brown sand (from mature soils), and river sand. A strong relation between the geological origin and sand type and quality was established. Although the river sand appears to be the best option for extraction with regards to sand quality and low environmental impacts, the white sand derived from Jurassic sandstones is intensively extracted due to easy access, availability of wide deposits, and visual quality and homogeneity. However, the white sand has an inadequate particle distribution due to its poor gradation (aeolian selection of fine particle) and high environmental impacts due to its location in wet tropical ecosystem dominated by the Atlantic forest and the erosion of sandy soils. We demonstrated that the knowledge of lithology is fundamental for mapping new potential sand mines and minimizing the generated impacts.  相似文献

根据基坑开挖深度、地层条件的不同,对北京市轨道交通80个明挖顺作法基坑工程实测结果进行统计分析,研究确定北京砂卵石和黏性土地区深基坑开挖引起的周边地表变形规律。研究表明:基坑工程周边地表最大变形的实测结果分布形态为正态分布或半整体分布,地表沉降变形值较大;最大地表沉降的平均值约为砂卵石地区0.11%H(H为开挖深度),黏性土地区0.20%H;地表变形与桩体向基坑内、外的水平位移值有一定的对应关系;地表沉降随插入比的增大而减小,黏性土地区基坑支撑系统刚度对地表沉降有明显的影响;北京地区基坑工程周边主要影响区约为0.6H或0.7H范围以内。研究成果可对未来北京及其他地区城市轨道交通基坑工程变形大小、安全性的预测和评估、指导基坑工程设计与施工和对防止基坑事故的发生等具有重要意义。  相似文献

采用室内单向压缩试验研究了上海砂土的蠕变变形规律和蠕变机制以及蠕变变形与应力历史的关系。试验结果表明,上海砂土具有明显的非线性蠕变特征,应变与应力、时间的关系可以用幂函数拟合;应力历史对砂土的蠕变性有显著影响,当荷载小于预压荷载时砂土的蠕变性显著减小。上海砂土的蠕变原因主要是砂土颗粒间的相互错动滑移所致。  相似文献

In settings where the transport of sand is partially or fully supply limited, changes in the upstream supply of sand are coupled to changes in the grain size of sand on the bed. In this manner, the transport of sand under the supply-limited case is ‘grain-size regulated’. Since the closure of Glen Canyon Dam in 1963, the downstream reach of the Colorado River in Marble and Grand Canyons has exhibited evidence of sand-supply limitation. Sand transport in the river is now approximately equally regulated by changes in the discharge of water and changes in the grain sizes of sand on the channel bed and eddy sandbars. Previous work has shown that changes in the grain size of sand on the bed of the channel (driven by changes in the upstream supply of sand owing to both tributary floods and high dam releases) are important in regulating sand transport over timescales of days to months. In this study, suspended-sand data are analysed in conjunction with bed grain-size data to determine whether changes in the grain size of sand on the bed of the channel or changes in the grain size of sand on the surface of eddy sandbars have been more important in regulating sand transport in the post-dam Colorado River over longer, multi-year timescales. The results of this study show that this combined theory- and field-based approach can be used to deduce which environments in a complicated setting are the most important environments for regulating sediment transport. In the case of the regulated Colorado River in Marble and Upper Grand Canyons, suspended-sand transport has been regulated mostly by changes in the surface grain size of eddy sandbars.  相似文献

Pacific Islands are considered among the most vulnerable geographies and societies to the effects of climate change and variability (CCV). This study addresses the mismatch between global climate change narratives and local perceptions of environmental change in Moorea, French Polynesia. This study builds on CCV risk perception and adaptation research by analyzing how temporal and historical socio-economic, cultural, political, and ecological contexts shape local perceptions of environmental change among a sample of environmental stakeholders in Moorea. The data were collected prior to the widespread global narrative and social amplification of climate change risk and its particular impact on islands. As such, they offer an important portrait of environmental perceptions in French Polynesia prior to the influence of a circumscribed climate change narrative, which has since come to shape government and NGO responses to environmental change in the Pacific Island Countries and Territories. The data presented in this paper illustrate that perceptions of drivers and effects of environmental change and risk in Moorea are embedded in larger social processes of political economy and ecology, particularly related to contemporary environmental politics, contextualized within the histories of colonialism and tourism-led economic development. Integrating the complexity of local environmental risk perceptions into CCV policy will help to avoid maladaptation, social movements against CCV planning, and may help maximize government and donor investments.  相似文献

Stress history is recognised to play a major role in determining stress–strain behaviour of soil in undrained shearing. Most experimental studies on the effects of stress history on undrained behaviour are mainly limited to clean sand. In this paper, an experimental study carried out to investigate the effect of stress history on the undrained behaviour of loose sand with a small amount of fines is presented. Four series of triaxial compression tests, with different types of drained stress histories to near-failure prior to commencement of undrained shearing, were conducted. The experimental results indicate that drained pre-shearing to near-failure affects significantly the undrained behaviour of loose sand. In general, the drained pre-shearing improves the subsequent undrained behaviour of loose sand to the extent that liquefaction may not occur. It is shown that the effect of drained pre-shearing cannot be explained by the reduction in void ratio induced by drained pre-shearing. However, for specimens subjected to drained pre-shearing, $ p_{{{\text{d}}0}}^{\prime } $ / $ p_{{{\text{u}}0}}^{\prime } $ can be used as a parameter for analysing the effects of preloading history. It is also shown that for different preloading histories that brought the same change in void ratio or state parameter, drained pre-shearing to near-failure is the most effective, whereas pre-compression alone is the least effective in improving subsequent undrained behaviour of loose sand.  相似文献

The prediction of the variability of the seismic ground motion in a given built-up area is considered an effective tool to plan appropriate urban development, to undertake actions on seismic risk mitigation and to understand the damage pattern caused by a strong-motion event. The procedures for studying the seismic response and the seismic microzonation of an urban area are well established; nevertheless, some controversial points still exists and are discussed here. In this paper, the selection of a reference input motion, the construction of a subsoil model and the seismic response analysis procedures are discussed in detail, based on the authors’ experience in two Italian case histories: the seismic microzonation of the city of Benevento, which was a predictive study, and the simulation of seismic response and damage distribution in the village of San Giuliano di Puglia, which was a retrospective analysis.  相似文献
