This paper questions the validity and relevance of the application of procedures of classical statistical inference to population data in geography. Arguments for such procedures include the notions of temporal and spatial samples, measurement error, modifiable areal units, data vetting and stochastic processes. Quantitative research of urban geography has benefited greatly from the rapid development of big geo-data. Spatial assembly is an essential analytical step to summarize and perceive geographical environment from individual behaviours. Most research focuses on the methodology of how to utilize the big data, while the adopted spatial units for data aggregation remain areal in nature. This article conceptually proposes an idea of sensing cities from a street perspective, emphasizes the significance of street units in quantitative urban studies. Using a three-month taxi trajectory dataset and the major streets in Beijing, we explore the spatio-temporal patterns of urban mobility on streets, cluster streets into nine types based on their dynamic functions and capacities. Additionally, we discuss the differences and connections between the linear street unit and traditional areal units, investigate the possibility of uncovering urban communities using streets, and point out the complexity of streets. We conclude that street unit as a supplement to areal units, is able to effectively minify the modifiable areal unit problem (MAUP), sense urban dynamics, depict urban functions, and understand urban structures.  相似文献

“可塑性面积单元问题”是对面积数据进行空间统计分析时不可回避的问题。该文以我国北方农牧交错带土地利用变化驱动力研究为契机,探讨了由于“可塑性面积单元问题”的存在而导致的土地利用变化驱动力研究中的尺度效应问题。通过构建土地利用变化驱动力模型,探究了20世纪80年代以来我国北方农牧交错带土地利用变化的驱动机制。研究表明,反映驱动因子与土地利用变化(耕地扩张与草地收缩)关系的Exponent Beta系数随研究尺度的变化而发生显著变化,反映了在研究土地利用驱动力时进行多尺度分析的必要性。  相似文献

随着RS和GIS技术的迅速发展, RS和GIS成为进行人口估计的主要手段。根据人口估计的目标和使用的数据源不同,可以把基于RS和GIS的人口估计方法分成两大类:面插值方法和统计模型方法。面插值方法根据插值过程中是否使用辅助数据可以进一步分成无辅助数据的面插值和有辅助数据的面插值两种。统计模型方法根据模型中自变量的不同可以分成建成区面积估计法、土地利用密度法、居住单元估计法、图像像元特征估计法和自然和社会经济特征综合估计法五种。本文按照上述分类标准综述了基于RS和GIS的各种人口估计方法,分析了各种方法的应用条件、优缺点和研究实例。最后提出了在基于RS和GIS进行人口估计方面需要进一步研究的问题。  相似文献

Monitoring vegetation condition is an important issue in the Mediterranean region, in terms of both securing food and preventing fires. Vegetation indices (VIs), mathematical transformations of reflectance bands, have played an important role in vegetation monitoring, as they depict the abundance and health of vegetation. Instead of storing raster VI maps, aggregated statistics can be derived and used in long-term monitoring. The aggregation schemes (zonations) used in Greece are the forest service units, the fire service units, and the administrative units. The purpose of this work was to explore the effect of the modifiable areal unit problem (MAUP) in vegetation condition monitoring at the above-mentioned aggregation schemes using 16 days Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) composites acquired by the moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer satellite sensor. The effects of aggregation in the context of MAUP were examined by analyzing variance, from which the among polygon variation (objects' heterogeneity) and the within polygon variation (pixels' homogeneity) were derived. Significant differences in objects' heterogeneity were observed when aggregating at the three aggregation schemes; therefore there is a MAUP effect in monitoring vegetation condition on a nationwide scale in Greece with NDVI. Monitoring using the fire service units has significantly higher pixels' homogeneity; therefore there is indication that it is the most appropriate for monitoring vegetation condition on a nationwide scale in Greece with NDVI. Results were consistent between the two major types of vegetation, natural and agricultural. According to the statistical validation, conclusions based on the examined years (2003 and 2004) are justified.  相似文献

在自然地理单元与行政单元交叉情况下,如何根据行政单元统计数据获得该自然地理单元的精确数据是当前研究的难点和重点之一。以青藏高原为自然地理单元和人口数据为例,选用并设计了数据统计的运算方法(实际数值模型、边缘等密度法推算模型、最小值模型、最大值模型和估测值模型等5个线性统计模型)及试验应用。主要研究结论为:(1)在青藏高原中国境内分布于6个省区的221个县(市),其中155个县(市)位于高原内部,其余66个县市位于高原边缘地区,文中给出了边缘县在高原内外的面积比;(2) 边缘等密度法的计算结果更接近实际, 而估测值模型与边缘等密度法计算结果相差最小;截止2001年,青藏高原人口约1204万人; (3)结合居民点的实际空间数据进行叠加分析或结合多源数据融合技术,将进一步提高测算的精确度。  相似文献

可塑性面积单元问题(modifiable areal unit problem,MAUP) 效应是对空间数据分析结果产生不确定性影响的主要原因之一,在空间自相关分析中也不例外.本文分别利用网格模拟数据和中国人均GDP实例数据为数据源,以全局Moran's I 系数来探究空间自相关统计中的MAUP效应,分析结果表明,变量的空间自相关程度依赖于空间的粒度大小与单元的划分方法,但空间单元的变化与自相关性并不存在某种函数关系.因此,在进行空间自相关研究时必须选择合适的地理单元的粒度大小和分区.最后本文给出一种基于地统计内插方法来降低MAUP对空间自相关分析影响.  相似文献

目前自上而下的城市系统宏观模拟并不能解决城市这一复杂系统中出现的部分问题,城市系统微观模拟(如多主体系统MAS) 已经成为城市系统模拟的新思路,其主要是基于个体数据(如个人、家庭、公司或建筑物) 开展的。国际国内这方面的应用都受到个体样本稀缺的限制。微观模拟所需要的个体样本数据是原有的统计制度所不能适应的,尤其是在中国,个体样本在统计公报或年鉴中不公开,仅可通过典型调查来补充。本文旨在探索稀疏数据环境下构建城市系统微观模拟的个体样本数据的新方法。该方法基于已有的多源统计数据、典型调查数据以及个体的通用规则,反演出个体样本的属性信息和空间分布,进而可以以GIS图层的形式直接作为微观模拟的数据基础。通过本方法获取的样本,能够符合已有的统计资料,并遵照了样本的基本特征,可以作为现有数据条件下的微观模拟模型的数据输入。同时该方法的应用简单,统计意义上的准确度高,适合我国统计制度下的微观模拟模型的构建。  相似文献

在经济和社会研究中,所要研究的区域之上经常没有数据,而这些数据需要由已知区域的数据求得,即统计数据需要空间转换,这就通常涉及到面积内插。本文从GIS的角度研究如何解决人口内插问题,认为面积内插和GIS中的叠加分析是一致的。在传统的面积内插方法的基础上是提出了基于人口真实分布的面积内插方法,并推导出了公式。同时提出了人口密度的递归算法,即把居住区分为人口稀疏地区和人口稠密地区,估计出人口稀疏地区的人口密度,就可以求出人口密集地区的人口密度;再把人口密集区分为新的人口稀疏区和密集区,此过程反复直至求出接近于人口真实分布的人口模型。  相似文献

The Classic method for mapping population density, and the simplest, is based on statistics for administrative units, mostly parishes, putting density in terms of inhabitants per areal unit. If the administrative units are large this “relative” method still will not give a satisfactory result. In order to make the units smaller one can cover the land with a grid and count the population of each square, and then compute the density. This method has been used for parts of Sweden in the density map nr 49—50 in Atlas över Sverige.  相似文献

Comparing models of debris-flow susceptibility in the alpine environment   总被引:12,自引:3,他引:9  
Debris-flows are widespread in Val di Fassa (Trento Province, Eastern Italian Alps) where they constitute one of the most dangerous gravity-induced surface processes. From a large set of environmental characteristics and a detailed inventory of debris flows, we developed five models to predict location of debris-flow source areas. The models differ in approach (statistical vs. physically-based) and type of terrain unit of reference (slope unit vs. grid cell). In the statistical models, a mix of several environmental factors classified areas with different debris-flow susceptibility; however, the factors that exert a strong discriminant power reduce to conditions of high slope-gradient, pasture or no vegetation cover, availability of detrital material, and active erosional processes. Since slope and land use are also used in the physically-based approach, all model results are largely controlled by the same leading variables.Overlaying susceptibility maps produced by the different methods (statistical vs. physically-based) for the same terrain unit of reference (grid cell) reveals a large difference, nearly 25% spatial mismatch. The spatial discrepancy exceeds 30% for susceptibility maps generated by the same method (discriminant analysis) but different terrain units (slope unit vs. grid cell). The size of the terrain unit also led to different susceptibility maps (almost 20% spatial mismatch). Maps based on different statistical tools (discriminant analysis vs. logistic regression) differed least (less than 10%). Hence, method and terrain unit proved to be equally important in mapping susceptibility.Model performance was evaluated from the percentages of terrain units that each model correctly classifies, the number of debris-flow falling within the area classified as unstable by each model, and through the metric of ROC curves. Although all techniques implemented yielded results essentially comparable; the discriminant model based on the partition of the study area into small slope units may constitute the most suitable approach to regional debris-flow assessment in the Alpine environment.  相似文献

This article deals with the districting problem arising in applications such as political districting, police patrol area delineation and sales territory design. The aim of districting is to group basic areal units into geographic districts such that some set of criteria are satisfied, with basic criteria being district balance, compactness and contiguity. This article proposes a center-based mixed-integer linear programming model to solve the districting problem. Given the central units of districts, the model optimizes weighted objectives of district balance and compactness while satisfying contiguous constraints on districts. The performance of the model was tested using three study areas with 297, 324 and 1297 areal units, respectively. Experimentation shows that, using the district centers identified by a multistart weighted K-medoids algorithm, the model instances can be solved optimally or near-optimally. Compared with local search-based algorithms, the center-based approach outperforms metaheuristics such as simulated annealing, variable neighborhood descent, iterative local search and old bachelor acceptance search in terms of solution quality.  相似文献

A common problem in location-allocation modeling is the error associated with the representation and scale of demand. Numerous researchers have investigated aggregation errors associated with using different scaled data, and more recently, error associated with the geographic representation of model objects has also been studied. For covering problems, the validity of using polygon centroid representations of demand has been questioned by researchers, but the alternative has been to assume that demand is uniformly distributed within areal units. The spatial heterogeneity of demand within areal units thus has been modeled using one of two extremes – demand is completely concentrated at one location or demand is uniformly distributed. This article proposes using intelligent areal interpolation and geographic information systems to model the spatial heterogeneity of demand within spatial units when solving the maximal covering location problem. The results are compared against representations that assume demand is either concentrated at centroids or uniformly distributed. Using measures of scale and representation error, preliminary results from the test study indicate that for smaller scale data, representation has a substantial impact on model error whereas at larger scales, model error is not that different for the alternative representations of the distribution of demand within areal units.  相似文献

Scientific interpretation of the driving forces of built-up land expansion is essential to urban planning and policy-making. In general, built-up land expansion results from the interactions of different factors, and thus, understanding the combined impacts of built-up land expansion is beneficial. However, previous studies have primarily been concerned with the separate effect of each driver, rather than the interactions between the drivers. Using the built-up land expansion in Beijing from 2000 to 2010 as a study case, this research aims to fill this gap. A spatial statistical method, named the geographical detector, was used to investigate the effects of physical and socioeconomic factors. The effects of policy factors were also explored using physical and socioeconomic factors as proxies. The results showed that the modifiable areal unit problem existed in the geographical detector, and 4000 m might be the optimal scale for the classification performed in this study. At this scale, the interactions between most factors enhanced each other, which indicated that the interactions had greater effects on the built-up land expansion than any single factor. In addition, two pairs of nonlinear enhancement, the greatest enhancement type, were found between the distance to rivers and two socioeconomic factors: the total investment in fixed assets and GDP. Moreover, it was found that the urban plans, environmental protection policies and major events had a great impact on built-up land expansion. The findings of this study verify that the geographical detector is applicable in analysing the driving forces of built-up land expansion. This study also offers a new perspective in researching the interactions between different drivers.  相似文献

When geographically aggregated data are included in hedonic models, the resulting coefficients are biased by the spatial scale and spatial configuration of variable measurement. We explore the effects of this modifiable areal unit problem (MAUP) within the context of hedonic price models with an individual-level dependent variable. Specifically, we developed standard and spatial hedonic regression models in order to examine the effects of the MAUP on model fit and coefficient estimates. Our empirical analysis documents several significant scale and zoning effects in the hedonic modeling framework. First, neighborhood characteristics are clearly important in efforts to improve model fit—and they are more significant contributors in the standard model than in the spatial hedonic model. For aggregation scale, the model fit change of the standard model is relatively large, whereas the change is more modest for spatial models. The patterns of change in model fit for standard and spatial hedonic models clearly diverge from one another, implying the existence of a scale level showing a maximum functional range of the submarket on which scale dependencies are expected to have an impact. Regarding the zoning effect, the model fits for both standard and spatial hedonic models vary according to the submarket systems.  相似文献

Choropleth mapping provides a simple but effective visual presentation of geographical data. Traditional choropleth mapping methods assume that data to be displayed are certain. This may not be true for many real-world problems. For example, attributes generated based on surveys may contain sampling and non-sampling error, and results generated using statistical inferences often come with a certain level of uncertainty. In recent years, several studies have incorporated uncertain geographical attributes into choropleth mapping with a primary focus on identifying the most homogeneous classes. However, no studies have yet accounted for the possibility that an areal unit might be placed in a wrong class due to data uncertainty. This paper addresses this issue by proposing a robustness measure and incorporating it into the optimal design of choropleth maps. In particular, this study proposes a discretization method to solve the new optimization problem along with a novel theoretical bound to evaluate solution quality. The new approach is applied to map the American Community Survey data. Test results suggest a tradeoff between within-class homogeneity and robustness. The study provides an important perspective on addressing data uncertainty in choropleth map design and offers a new approach for spatial analysts and decision-makers to incorporate robustness into the mapmaking process.  相似文献
