A high-resolution (4–5cm/kyr) giant piston core record (MD962085) retrieved during an IMAGES II-NAUSICAA cruise from the continental slope of the southeast Atlantic Ocean reveals striking variations in planktonic foraminifer faunal abundances and sea-surface temperatures (SST) during the past 600 000 yr. The location and high-quality sedimentary record of the core provide a good opportunity to assess the variability of the Benguela Current system and associated important features of the ocean-climate system in the southeast Atlantic. The planktonic foraminifer faunal abundances of the core are dominated by three assemblages: (1) Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (right coiling)+Neogloboquadrina dutertrei, (2) Globigerina bulloides, and (3) Globorotalia inflata. The assemblage of N. pachyderma (right coiling)+N. dutertrei shows distinctive abundance changes which are nearly in-phase with glacial–interglacial variations. The high abundances of this assemblage are associated with major glacial conditions, possibly representing low SST/high nutrient level conditions in the southwestern Africa margin. In contrast, the G. bulloides and G. inflata assemblages show greater high-frequency abundance change patterns, which are not parallel to the glacial–interglacial changes. These patterns may indicate rapid oceanic frontal movements from the south, and a rapid change in the intensity of the Benguela upwelling system from the east. A single episode of maximum abundances of a polar water species N. pachyderma (left coiling) occurred in the beginning of stage 9 (340–330 kyr). The event of the maximum occurrence of this species shown in this record may indicate instability in the Benguela coastal upwelling, or the Antarctic polar front zone position. A winter season SST estimate using transfer function techniques for this record shows primarily glacial–interglacial variations. The SST is maximal during the transitions from the major glacial to interglacial stages (Terminations I, II, IV, V), and is associated with the abundance maxima of a warm water species indicator Globigerinoides ruber. Cross-spectral analyses of the SST record and the SPECMAP stack reveal statistically significant concentrations of variance and coherencies in three major orbital frequency bands. The SST precedes changes in the global ice volume in all orbital frequency bands, indicating a dominant southern Hemispheric climate effect over the Benguela Current region in the southeast Atlantic.  相似文献

Backshore sediment samples from 22 beaches along the Antalya and Finike Gulfs have been studied for their grain size, chemical and heavy mineral composition. Data presented here suggest that well- to moderately-sorted (0.41 Φ–0.92 Φ) medium sand (1 Φ–2 Φ) represents dominant mean grain size in most beaches. In contrast, some beaches from the western part of the Gulf of Antalya (Göynük, Kemer-Kiriş and Beldibi) are composed of pebble- to boulder-size grained beaches which are located close to mouths of short and steep-gradient ephemeral rivers entering the sea from the Western Taurus Mountains. The heavy mineral assemblages are dominated by detrital opaque minerals (14–58% magnetite, chromite, and hematite), pyroxene (8–65% augite), amphibole (3–15% tremolite and actinolite), epidote (3–25%), garnet (2–9% pyrope and almandine) and micas (3–20 biotite, muscovite and chlorite). The very high concentrations of heavy minerals (up to 86% of bulk sediment) together with the significant concentrations of some elements found in beach sediments from the Gulf of Finike and western Gulf of Antalya (Fe: 18.40%; Cr: 10.00%; and Ti: 1.32%) are indicative of ultramafic origin, mainly derived from the ophiolitic rocks of the Antalya–Tekirova nappe on coastal hinterland.  相似文献

The detailed reconstruction of the directional spectrum of wind waves from measurements of the wave field is an essential requirement for several applications, including the numerical modeling of wave evolution. Three reconstruction techniques that provide estimates of the directional distribution function D(f,θ), given the one-dimensional frequency spectrum, are compared using data from a coastal locality at the southern Brazilian coast. The techniques are the maximum entropy method (MEM), the Fourier Expansion Method using a cos2 type function (FEMcos) and the Fourier Expansion Method using a sech type function (FEMsech). The main patterns of the wave climate at the study site are qualitatively assessed. Three main sea states, including swell, transition between local sea and swell, and directionally bimodal wind sea, are identified. Time series from three events associated with the main sea states provide test cases for inter comparison of the three reconstruction techniques. Maximum entropy estimates of D(f,θ) provide results that are more consistent than those obtained from the two FEM techniques in all cases considered.  相似文献

Morphological and chronological studies have been carried out on coralline algal buildups (“coralligène”) situated between 10 and 60 m depth near Marseilles, and in Corsica (France). Despite the presence of occasionally sizeable quantities of iron hydroxide, these constructions prove to be a reliable material for radiocarbon dating. Ages obtained using this method range from 640±120 yrs B.P. (Corsica, Scandola Natural Reserve, −15 m) to 7760±80 yrs B.P. (Marseilles, Grand Congloue, −52 m). Internal erosion surfaces within the buildups give evidence of discontinuous development. The accumulation rate of the coralligène constructions is very low (0.006–0.83 mm yr−1 according to the depth and time period). The higher values (0.53–0.83 mm yr−1) were recorded for the deeper constructions. They correspond to a period between 8000 and 6000 yrs B.P. After 6000 yrs B.P., the only appreciable accumulation rates (0.11–0.42 mm yr−1) were recorded for constructions situated between 10 and 35 m depth, whereas the accumulation rates of deep coralligène (> 50 m) appear to be low or zero. The age of the large constructions (overhang: 80 cm in width) is positively correlated with depth (r = 0.95; p < 0.005). Their development occurred during the Flandrian transgression. The oldest structures, today situated at 50 to 60 m depth, started to develop when water depth was probably no greater than 10 to 15 m. Apart from in strongly shaded fissures on rocky coasts and areas subjected to heavy sedimentation, the main framework building algal species was initially Mesophyllum lichenoides (Ellis) Lemoine, a high tolerant species to light, hydrodynamic energy and temperature. With the rise in sea level, the coralligène structure gradually became available to other less tolerant algal species (Lithophyllum, Lithothamnion), and the crustforming population diversified. Because of the good preservation of coralligène structures, the reliability of radiocarbon dating and the correlation between the age and bathymetric position of the large coralligène structures (except in areas of heavy sedimentation and fissures in shallow rocky coasts), these buildups are considered to be of use as biological indicators of variations in sea level.  相似文献

CaCO3 and total organic carbon concentrations, organic matter C/N and carbon isotope ratios, and sediment accumulation rates in late Quaternary sediments from DSDP Site 594 provide information about glacial–interglacial variations in the delivery of organic matter to the Chatham Rise offshore of southeastern New Zealand. Low C/N ratios and nearly constant organic δ13C values of −23‰ indicate that marine production dominates organic matter supply in both glacial and interglacial times during oxygen isotope stages 1 through 6 (0–140 ka) and 17 through 19 (660–790 ka). Increased organic carbon mass accumulation rates in isotope stages 2, 4, 6, and 18 record enhanced marine productivity during glacial maxima. Excursions of organic δ13C values to ca. −29‰ in portions of isotope stage 2 suggest that the local concentration of dissolved CO2 was occasionally elevated during the last glacial maximum, probably as a result of short periods of lowered sea-surface temperature. Dilution of carbonates by clastic continental sediment generally increases at this location during glacial maxima, but enhanced delivery of land-derived organic matter does not accompany the increased accumulation of clastic sediments.  相似文献

High-resolution benthic oxygen isotope and XRF (Fe and Ca) records from Site 1085 drilled in the Mid-Cape basin (ODP Leg 175) are used to investigate global climate changes during the Late Miocene in relation to Messinian geological events. The cyclic fluctuations of the time series at Site 1085 enable us to establish a reliable chronology for the time interval 7.3–4.7 Ma. Spectral analysis of the δ18O record indicates that the 41-kyr period of orbital obliquity dominates the Late Miocene record. A global climate record was extracted from the oxygen isotopic composition of benthic foraminifera. Both long- and short-term variabilities in the climate record are discussed in terms of sea-level and deep-water temperature changes. The time interval 7.3–6.25 Ma characterized by low-amplitude δ18O variations is followed by a period marked by maximum in the δ18O values (6.25–5.57 Ma). At about 5.56 Ma, a rapid decrease in δ18O values is documented that may reflect a warming of deep-water temperature associated with a global warming period. Comparison between the timing of the oceanic isotope events and the chronology of the Mediterranean Salinity Crisis suggest that global eustatic processes were not essential in the Mediterranean Salinity Crisis history. From our data, we infer that the global warmth documented in the Early/mid-Pliocene probably started during the Late Miocene (at 5.55 Ma). At the same time, the onset of evaporite deposition in the central basin of the Mediterranean Sea took place. Sharp changes in the sedimentation rates, mainly driven by terrigenous input at this site, are observed during the Messinian Stage.  相似文献

2016年5月4日—10日, 海南省海口市红城湖发生了一起硅藻藻华。为明确该起藻华的肇事生物, 于藻华期间采集了水体样品, 经过光镜和电镜下的形态学观察, 确认藻华原因种为微小辐环藻Actinocyclus exiguus Fryxell & Semina, 该种是我国硅藻的新记录种, 其藻华在我国也是首次报道。微小辐环藻隶属于中心纲硅藻, 细胞单独生活或形成胶质状群体, 细胞个体较小, 壳面直径为6.4~11.1μm, 有2个或3个壳缘唇形突, 壳缘处具有眼斑结构。水体中丰富的氨氮(平均值为2880μg•L-1)和较高的水温(31℃)条件可能是藻华事件的环境诱因。藻华事件导致红城湖40余吨花鰶死亡。经过鱼体检测, 初步排除因为藻毒素、鱼鳃机械性损伤或水体缺氧而致死的可能, 水体盐度剧烈变化等物理应激反应导致鱼类死亡的可能性较大。  相似文献

本文分析了福建省平潭近海海域2013—2019年水文、水质及气象数据的主成分结果, 筛选出5个气象因子和4个水质因子作为输入指标, 以藻密度为输出指标, 分别演算了KNN (K-nearest neighbor)、RF (random forest)、GBRT (gradient-boosted regression Trees)以及Bagging (bootstrap aggregating)4种赤潮预警回归模型。对2013—2019年的802 组海洋监测数据归一化处理后, 随机选取80%的数据作为模型的训练样本, 剩余的20%作为模型验证数据。其中, 以风速、气温、海平面气压、叶绿素a浓度组合为输入指标时, KNN回归模型演算结果的精度较高(R2=0.624, RMSE=0.821μg·L-1, MAE=0.836μg·L-1)。在没有叶绿素a浓度监测指标的海域, 构建了以叶绿素a浓度为输出指标, 气温、日照、风速、AOI(apparent oxygen increase)组合为输入指标的BP神经网络赤潮模型, 该模型也具有较好的预警精度(R2=0.651, RMSE=0.062μg·L-1, MAE=0.033μg·L-1)。本研究结果可为平潭海域的赤潮预警研究提供参考。  相似文献

This paper builds on the work of Masselink [Masselink, G., 1993. Simulating the effects of tides on beach morphodynamics. J. Coast. Res. SI 15, 180–197.] on the use of the residence times of shoaling waves, breaking waves and swash/backwash motions across a cross-shore profile to qualitatively understand temporal beach behaviour. We use a data set of in-situ measurements of wave parameters (height and period) and water depth, and time-exposure video images overlooking our single-barred intertidal measurement array at Egmond aan Zee (Netherlands) to derive boundaries between the shoaling zone, the surf zone and the swash zone. We find that the boundaries are functional dependencies of the local relative wave height on the local wave steepness. This contrasts with the use of constant relative wave heights or water levels in earlier work. We use the obtained boundaries and a standard cross-shore wave transformation model coupled to an inner surf zone bore model to show that large (> 5) relative tide ranges (RTR, defined as the ratio tide range–wave height) indicate shoaling wave processes across almost the entire intertidal profile, with surf processes dominating on the beach face. When the RTR is between 2 and 5, surf processes dominate over the intertidal bar and the lower part of the beach face, while swash has the largest residence times on the upper beach face. Such conditions, associated with surf zone bores propagating across the bar around low tide, were observed to cause the intertidal bar to migrate onshore slowly and the upper beach face to steepen. For RTR values less than about 2, surf zone processes dominate across the intertidal bar, while the dominance of swash processes now extends across most of the beach face. The surf zone processes were now observed to lead to offshore bar migration, while the swash eroded the upper beach face.  相似文献

Forces on a circular cylinder have been measured with nominally two-dimensional current and oscillatory flow at right angles. Previous results for purely oscillatory flow defined by a Keulegan-Carpenter number, Kc, have been extended for reduced velocities, Vr, in the range 3–10. For Kc<7 modification of the Karman street by oscillation is complex and locking-on has a dominant influence. For Kc > 7 simply adding forces due to the current and oscillation as though in isolation generally gives conservative results. The ‘current’ drag shows considerable variation and can even be negative. The Morison fit to the in-line force is generally less satisfactory when there is a current and can be wholly inadequate.  相似文献

文章使用2019年7月5日—20日在珠江河口伶仃洋定点连续观测的海表面叶绿素a质量浓度、海表面气温、气压、风速、风向、海表温度、盐度、流速、流向、遥感降雨量数据和中等分辨率成像光谱仪可见光波段影像, 利用小波分析和集成经验模态分解方法分析了观测期间内伶仃洋海表面叶绿素a的时间变化特征及其影响因子。分析结果表明, 观测期间海水表层叶绿素a质量浓度的变化范围为0.44~1.75µg·L-1, 平均值为0.80µg·L-1, 其变化周期主要为6h、12h和24h。其与相对应周期的潮流存在明显的相位关系, 并且在降雨后两者的相位关系发生了转换。7月5日—12日, 叶绿素a与潮流基本呈反相位关系, 涨急时叶绿素a质量浓度低, 落急时叶绿素a质量浓度较高, 浓度相差约为0.3µg·L-1。珠江流域在7月8日—13日发生了一次强降雨过程, 降雨前后海水表层叶绿素a质量浓度在6h、12h和24h周期波段的振幅由0.02~0.09µg·L-1增加到0.15µg·L-1左右。同时, 降雨对珠江河口的叶绿素a质量浓度造成了一个持续80h的增加过程, 浓度增加了0.3µg·L-1。发生降雨后, 7月13日—20日期间潮流滞后于叶绿素a约6h, 水位最高时叶绿素a质量浓度最低, 水位最低时叶绿素a质量浓度最高。由以上结果可以看出, 降雨不仅引起了河口区叶绿素a质量浓度的增加, 还造成了叶绿素a和潮流间相位关系的转换。  相似文献

The velocity profiles under crest of a total of 62 different steep wave events in deep water are measured in laboratory using particle image velocimetry. The waves take place in the leading unsteady part of a wave train, focusing wave fields and random wave series. Complementary fully nonlinear theoretical/numerical wave computations are performed. The experimental velocities have been put on a nondimensional form in the following way: from the wave record (at a fixed point) the (local) trough-to-trough period, TTT and the maximal elevation above mean water level, ηm of an individual steep wave event are identified. The local wavenumber, k and an estimate of the wave slope, ε are evaluated from ω2/(gk)=1+ε2, where ω=2π/TTT and g denotes the acceleration of gravity. A reference fluid velocity, is then defined. Deep water waves with a fluid velocity up to 75% of the estimated wave speed are measured. The corresponding kηm is 0.62. A strong collapse of the nondimensional experimental velocity profiles is found. This is also true with the fully nonlinear computations of transient waves. There is excellent agreement between the present measurements and previously published Laser Doppler Anemometry data. A surprising result, obtained by comparison, is that the nondimensional experimental velocities fit with the exponential profile, i.e. eky, y the vertical coordinate, with y=0 in the mean water level.  相似文献

Petrographic data obtained from 182 surface sediment samples together with the available bathymetric data are used to investigate the effects of the last major sea-level changes on shelf evolution in the southern Sea of Marmara. Grain-size analysis reveals the presence of at least three belts or zones which are rich in coarse-grained (sand and gravel) sediments. These coarse-grained belts which are up to 45 km long, 15 km wide, show up to 20 m of relief and are presently found at 40–80 m (average 60 m) water depths. Based on microscopic examination and residual analysis, the sediments from these belts are interpreted as indicators of high-energy shallow waters where detrital siliciclastics, with some benthic contribution, accumulated. The presence of a 62–65 m deep sill in the Çanakkale Strait and the consideration of sea-level curves would suggest that the Marmara shelves must have been subaerially exposed down to −65 m water depths for about 10,000 yrs (22,000–12,000 yrs B.P.), sufficient time to modify former shelf topographies and form such bottom relief. While difficult to date, we believe that coarse-grained belts found on the southern Marmara shelf must be relict (i.e., former shorelines, beaches) and their formation is largely related to low stands of sea-level during the Late Pleistocene regression and early Holocene transgression. However, the available high-resolution seismic profiling data suggest that the neotectonism in this seismically active Sea of Marmara plays an important role to explain the raise of these older shorelines to their present levels on the sea-floor.  相似文献

网纹藤壶Amphibalanus reticulatus和鳞笠藤壶Tetraclita squamosa squamosa是我国东南沿海两种常见的海洋污损生物种类, 在海洋生态系统中占有重要地位。探讨这两种藤壶的幼虫发育与盐度的关系有助于丰富和发展海洋生物学知识, 并为海洋污损生物防除相关工作的开展提供数据资料。研究探讨了网纹藤壶和鳞笠藤壶无节幼虫在盐度为6‰、12‰、18‰、24‰、30‰(对照组)和36‰的培养条件下的发育状况, 观察记录5天后幼虫的存活率和各期幼虫所占百分比, 采用最小显著差数法进行差异显著性分析。结果表明, 当水体盐度≤18‰时, 会严重阻滞网纹藤壶和鳞笠藤壶幼虫的发育, 甚至导致死亡; 而当盐度≥24‰时, 这2种藤壶幼虫的成活率虽不会随盐度改变发生显著变化, 但盐度为30‰的水体更有利于网纹藤壶幼虫的发育, 而鳞笠藤壶幼虫发育状况受盐度变化的影响不大, 具备更强的耐受能力。  相似文献

In this article a method to estimate the mean upcrossing intensity, μ(u), of a stochastic process is proposed. It is assumed that the stochastic process is a sum of a Gaussian process and a second-order correction term. The method is based on the two-dimensional Saddlepoint approximation. The accuracy of the method is tested on processes having analytical solutions for μ(u). Numerical examples are given where the stochastic process represents (i) the horizontal response of a floating offshore structure in a Gaussian sea, and (ii) the response of a structure subjected to a Gaussian wind velocity process. In addition, the estimates are compared to empirical upcrossing intensities of simulated responses. For case (ii), the obtained μ(u) estimates are compared to estimates obtained by numerical integration.  相似文献

The Agulhas Bank region, south of Africa, is an oceanographically important and complex area. The leakage of warm saline Indian Ocean water into the South Atlantic around the southern tip of Africa is a crucial factor in the global thermohaline circulation. Foraminiferal assemblage, stable isotope and sedimentological data from the top 10 m of core MD962080, recovered from the western Agulhas Bank Slope, are used to indicate changes in water mass circulation in the southeastern South Atlantic for the last 450 kyr. Sedimentological and planktonic foraminiferal data give clear signals of cold water intrusions. The benthic stable isotope record provides the stratigraphic framework and indicates that the last four climatic cycles are represented (i.e. down to marine isotope stage (MIS) 12). The planktonic foraminiferal assemblages bear a clear transitional to subantarctic character with Globorotalia inflata and Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (dextral) being the dominant taxa. Input of cold, subantarctic waters into the region by means of leakage through the Subtropical Convergence, as part of Agulhas ring shedding, and a general cooling of surface waters is suggested by increased occurrence of the subantarctic assemblage during glacial periods. Variable input of Indian Ocean waters via the Agulhas Current is indicated by the presence of tropical/subtropical planktonic foraminiferal species Globoquadrina dutertrei, Globigerinoides ruber (alba) and Globorotalia menardii with maximum leakage occurring at glacial terminations. The continuous presence of G. menardii throughout the core suggests that the exchange of water from the South Indian Ocean to the South Atlantic Ocean was never entirely obstructed in the last 450 kyr. The benthic carbon isotope record and sediment textural data reflect a change in bottom water masses over the core location from North Atlantic Deep Water to Upper Southern Component Water. Planktonic foraminiferal assemblages and sediment composition indicate a profound change in surface water conditions over the core site approximately 200–250 kyr BP, during MIS 7, from mixed subantarctic and transitional water masses to overall warmer surface water conditions.  相似文献

The study of different magmatic provinces between the Resolution fracture zone (33°S–131°W) and the Pacific–Antarctic Ridge (PAR) axis (37°S–111°W) suggests that similar processes of interaction between hotspot and spreading axial magmatism occurred 20–25 Ma and 0–5 Ma ago. There is evidence of this process from the changes in composition observed in the lavas erupted near 400–300 km between the present day PAR axis (37°S–111′W) and the eastern tip of the Foundation Seamount (FS) hotspot near 36°20′S–114°W where the last alkali enriched volcanics [K/Ti>0.30, Zr/Y>6 and (Ce/Yb)N>4] have erupted. This transitional province between the PAR and the FS consists of volcanic cones built on several volcanic ridges (<200 km in length) which have erupted less enriched volcanics such as E-[K/Ti=0.25–0.33, Zr/Y=5–6 and (Ce/Yb)N=3–4] and T-[K/Ti=0.11–0.25, Zr/Y=2–4 and (Ce/Yb)N=1–2] MORBs than those from the FS. It is also noticed that there is a general decrease in the degree of the basalt alkalinity (more T-MORBs) towards the PAR axis. The limit of the FS hotspot influence corresponds to the area where the VR intersect the PAR axis for a distance of about 100 km along its strike between 37°10′S and 38°20′S. Indeed, the lava erupted further to the north and to the south of these latitudes contains N-MORBs [K/Ti=0.05–0.11, Zr/Y<3 and (Ce/Yb)N=<2]. Many Old Pacific Seamounts (OPS, >20 Ma) also built on volcanic ridges are identified west (>1200 km from the PAR axis) of a Failed Rift Propagator (FRP) forming the eastern boundary of the ancient Selkirk microplate. Some of these seamounts made of alkali basalts were built during the initiation of the FS hotspot 20–23 Ma ago. The interaction and the influence (thermal) of mantle plume magmatism with the ancient spreading ridge of the Farallon–Pacific plates was responsible for the eruptions of the T-MORBs and andesitic lavas. This situation is comparable to that presently observed on the PAR axis where silicic lavas are also erupted in association with T-MORBs.  相似文献

Organic carbon (OC) and nitrogen (N) contents and δ13C and δ15N values in total organic matter (OM) were measured in sub-surface sediments (0–30 cm sub-bottom) from 21 cores raised from the Laurentian Channel of the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the Labrador Sea, to document OM fluxes and storage along the eastern Canadian margin. Storage rates as high as 2.5 g m−2 yr−1 for OC and 0.2 g m−2 yr−1 for N are observed in the Laurentian Channel, suggesting that the shelf plays a significant role in terms of OM storage (from 1 to 2% of the primary production). Based on the isotopic composition of the essentially marine OM of the Labrador Sea (δ13C/V-PDB=−21.9±0.4‰; δ15N/AIR=7.6±0.6‰; n=12), there is no isotopic evidence for a significant relative input of terrestrial OM along the Laurentian Channel (δ13C/V-PDB=−21.9±0.4‰; δ15N/AIR=8.0±0.9‰; n=10), either due to high relative fluxes of marine OM and/or to the trapping of continental OM in the estuary and upstream. High storage rates of OM are also observed on the continental rise of the Labrador Sea (as high as 1.1 g C m−2 yr−1 and 0.09 g N m−2 yr−1). They contrast with one order of magnitude lower rates on the slope, due to low sedimentation rates (SR) and sediment winnowing by the Western Boundary Undercurrent (WBUC). Reduced early diagenetic alteration of OM is observed, particularly in the Laurentian Channel. It results in discrete (i) losses of OC and N, (ii) shifts in C/N ratios, suggesting preferential removal of N-bearing OM also highlighted by losses in total hydrolysable amino acids (HAA). In the Labrador Sea slope records, due to low SR, OM concentration changes linked to long term temporal variations may superimpose on these diagenetic trends, and some influence of the WBUC is noticeable.  相似文献

The Santa Cruz coastal terrace fringes much of the northern Monterey Bay region, California. It consists mainly of a regressive sequence of high-energy, barred nearshore marine sediments deposited during the last (Sangamonian) highstand of sea level. This sequence can be sub-divided into several depth-dependent facies on the basis of paleo-current data and vertical sequence of sedimentary structures. These include a lower shoreface facies deposited in 10–16 m water depth, an upper shoreface facies (including both a storm-dominated assemblage and a surf zone assemblage) deposited in 0–10 m water depth, and a foreshore facies deposited in the swash zone, up to 3.5 m above high tide.

The magnitudes of the storm events responsible for depositing these sediments were estimated by calculating paleo-wave heights using a variety of criteria (e.g., critical threshold equations, breaker depths, berm heights). In addition, the climate and paleogeography during the deposition of these sediments were essentially the same as today, allowing the use of present-day wave statistics to estimate the frequency of these storm events. The largest storms formed offshore-flowing currents (e.g., rip, wind-forced, and possibly storm-surge ebb currents) that resulted in the deposition of approximately 30% of the sediments seaward of the surf zone; however, the magnitude and frequency of these events are unknown. The remaining 70% of the sediment beyond the surf zone was deposited in response to smaller storm waves which were, on the average, at least 1.6 m high; such waves presently occur no more than 15% of the time. Sediments deposited during “fairweather” conditions (i.e., the remaining 85% of the time) have a low preservation potential, and are generally not preserved in this facies. In contrast, surf zone sediments were deposited by a variety of processes associated with waves whose maximum offshore heights were probably ≤ 2.2 m; such waves presently occur up to 92% of the time. Sediments within the swash zone were deposited by waves up to 3 m high, the largest of which presently occur approximately 2% of the time.

Most of the sediments were deposited by storms of intermediate magnitude and frequency; different facies, however, appear to preferentially record events of different recurrence intervals. In particular, surf zone sediments were deposited under relatively small storm and post-storm conditions, whereas sediments deposited farther offshore record increasingly larger, less frequent storm events. Relatively rare events (e.g., the 100 or 1000 yr events) do not appear to have significantly affected sedimentation in these nearshore environments.  相似文献
