We have investigated the influence of the r-mode instability on hypercritically accreting neutron stars in close binary systems during their common envelope phases, based on the scenario proposed by Brown et al. On the one hand, neutron stars are heated by the accreted matter at the stellar surface, but on the other hand they are also cooled down by the neutrino radiation. At the same time, the accreted matter transports its angular momentum and mass to the star. We have studied the evolution of the stellar mass, temperature and rotational frequency.
The gravitational-wave-driven instability of the r-mode oscillation strongly suppresses spinning up of the star, the final rotational frequency of which is well below the mass-shedding limit, in fact typically as low as 10 per cent of that of the mass-shedding state. On a very short time-scale the rotational frequency tends to approach a certain constant value and saturates there, as long as the amount of accreted mass does not exceed a certain limit to collapse to a black hole. This implies that a similar mechanism of gravitational radiation to that in the so-called 'Wagoner star' may work in this process. The star is spun up by accretion until the angular momentum loss by gravitational radiation balances the accretion torque. The time-integrated dimensionless strain of the radiated gravitational wave may be large enough to be detectable by gravitational wave detectors such as LIGO II.  相似文献

New strong non-spiralling-in gravitational wave (GW) source for LIGO/VIRGO detectors are proposed. Double ONe–Mg white dwarf mergers can produce strong gravitational waves with frequencies in the several hundreds Hz range. Such events can be followed by a Super Nova type Ia.  相似文献

The gravitational radiation of a neutron star with a weakly coupled superfluid component is considered. It is assumed that regions can exist in the star's core which rotate at substantially higher angular velocities than the observed angular velocities of pulsars. A star of this sort has a quadrupole moment on the order of the maximum value for the neutron star configurations that have been discussed, so it could be a powerful source of gravitational radiation for the planned Advanced LIGO detector. The state of supranuclear matter in compact stars remains puzzling, and it is argued that pulsars could be strangeon stars. What would happen if binary strangeon stars merge? This kind of merger could result in the formation of a hyper-massive strangeon star, accompanied by bursts of gravitational waves and electromagnetic radiation(and even a strangeon kilonova explained in the paper). The tidal polarizability of binary strangeon stars is different from that of binary neutron stars, because a strangeon star is self-bound on the surface by the fundamental strong force while a neutron star by the gravity, and their equations of state are different. Our calculation shows that the tidal polarizability of merging binary strangeon stars is favored by GW170817. Three kinds of kilonovae(i.e., of neutron, quark and strangeon) are discussed, and the light curve of the kilonova AT 2017 gfo following GW170817 could be explained by considering the decaying strangeon nuggets and remnant star spin-down. Additionally, the energy ejected to the fireball around the nascent remnant strangeon star, being manifested as a gamma-ray burst, is calculated. It is found that, after a prompt burst, an X-ray plateau could follow in a timescale of 10~2-10~3 s. Certainly, the results could be tested also by further observational synergies between gravitational wave detectors(e.g., Advanced LIGO) and X-ray telescopes(e.g., the Chinese HXMT satellite and e XTP mission), and especially if the detected gravitational wave form is checked by peculiar equations of state provided by the numerical relativistical simulation.  相似文献

Gravitational wave bursts in the formation of neutron stars and black holes in energetic core-collapse supernovae (CC-SNe) are of potential interest to LIGO-Virgo and KAGRA. Events nearby are readily discovered using moderately sized telescopes. CC-SNe are competitive with mergers of neutron stars and black holes, if the fraction producing an energetic output in gravitational waves exceeds about 1%. This opportunity motivates the design of a novel Sejong University Core-CollapsE Supernova Survey (SUCCESS), to provide triggers for follow-up searches for gravitational waves. It is based on the 76 cm Sejong university telescope (SUT) for weekly monitoring of nearby star-forming galaxies, i.e., M51, M81-M82 and blue dwarf galaxies from the unified nearby galaxy catalog with an expected yield of a few hundred per year. Optical light curves will be resolved for the true time-of-onset for probes of gravitational waves by broadband time-sliced matched filtering.  相似文献

We present one possible mechanism for the giant flares of the soft gamma-ray repeaters (SGRs) within the framework of the magnetar (superstrongly magnetized neutron star) model, motivated by the positive period increase associated with the August 27 event from SGR 1900+14. From second-order perturbation analysis of the equilibrium of the magnetic polytrope, we find that there exist different equilibrium states separated by the energy of the giant flares and the shift in the moment of inertia to cause the period increase. This suggests that, if we assume that global reconfiguration of the internal magnetic field of     suddenly occurs, the positive period increase     as well as the energy ≳1044 erg of the giant flares may be explained. The moment of inertia can increase with a release of energy, because the star shape deformed by the magnetic field can be prolate rather than oblate. In this mechanism, since oscillation of the neutron star will be excited, a ∼ ms-period pulsation of the burst profile and an emission of gravitational waves are expected. The gravitational waves could be detected by planned interferometers such as LIGO, VIRGO and LCGT.  相似文献

The gravitational radiation of n = 1 polytropes undergoing quasiradial pulsations is examined. The intensity of the gravitational radiation and the gravitational wave amplitudes are calculated for polytropic models of white dwarfs and neutron stars when the energy of rotation of the object serves as the source of the radiated energy. Calculations of h0 show that objects with a polytropic equation of state can describe the expected gravitational radiation from white dwarfs and neutron stars. The gravitational radiation of polytropic models of galactic nuclei and quasars is also examined. These objects can create a high enough background of gravitational radiation at frequencies of 10-8–10-11 Hz for gravitational wave detectors operating in this frequency range. __________ Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 48, No. 4, pp. 603–612 (November 2005).  相似文献

Dynamics of oscillating relativistic tori around Kerr black holes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We present a comprehensive numerical study of the dynamics of relativistic axisymmetric accretion tori with a power-law distribution of specific angular momentum orbiting in the background space–time of a Kerr black hole. By combining general relativistic hydrodynamics simulations with a linear perturbative approach we investigate the main dynamical properties of these objects over a large parameter space. The astrophysical implications of our results extend and improve two interesting results that have been recently reported in the literature. First, the induced quasi-periodic variation of the mass quadrupole moment makes relativistic tori of nuclear matter densities, as those formed during the last stages of binary neutron star mergers, promising sources of gravitational radiation, potentially detectable by interferometric instruments. Secondly, p-mode oscillations in relativistic tori of low rest-mass densities could be used to explain high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations observed in X-ray binaries containing a black hole candidate under conditions more generic than those considered so far.  相似文献

The gravitational rotation of slowly rotating neutron stars with rough surfaces is examined. The source of the gravitational waves is assumed to be the energy transferred to the crust of the star during irregular changes in its angular rotation velocity. It is shown that individual pulsars whose angular velocity regularly undergoes glitches will radiate a periodic gravitational signal that can be distinguished from noise by the latest generation of detectors. Simultaneous recording of a gravitational signal and of a glitch in the angular velocity of a pulsar will ensure reliable detection of gravitational radiation. __________ Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 49, No. 2, pp. 221–229 (May 2006).

Stellar-mass black holes (BHs) are expected to segregate and form a steep density cusp around supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in galactic nuclei. We follow the evolution of a multimass system of BHs and stars by numerically integrating the Fokker–Planck energy diffusion equations for a variety of BH mass distributions. We find that the BHs 'self-segregate', and that the rarest, most massive BHs dominate the scattering rate closest to the SMBH  (≲10−1 pc)  . BH–BH binaries form out of gravitational wave emission during BH encounters. We find that the expected rate of BH coalescence events detectable by Advanced LIGO is  ∼1–102 yr−1  , depending on the initial mass function of stars in galactic nuclei and the mass of the most massive BHs. We find that the actual merger rate is likely ∼10 times larger than this due to the intrinsic scatter of stellar densities in many different galaxies. The BH binaries that form this way in galactic nuclei have significant eccentricities as they enter the LIGO band (90 per cent with   e > 0.9  ), and are therefore distinguishable from other binaries, which circularize before becoming detectable. We also show that eccentric mergers can be detected to larger distances and greater BH masses than circular mergers, up to  ∼700 M  . Future ground-based gravitational wave observatories will be able to constrain both the mass function of BHs and stars in galactic nuclei.  相似文献

This article discusses the gravitational radiation of rotating and oscillating stellar configurations with an incompressible fluid equation of state. The method used here makes it possible to determine the frequencies and amplitudes of the gravitational waves for arbitrary values of the central densities. At the densities corresponding to neutron stars, the major parameters of the gravitational radiation are consistent with previous results from more realistic models. Depending on the central density, stellar configurations with an incompressible fluid can emit gravitational waves over a wide range of frequencies, from 10−2 to 104 Hz. __________ Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 49, No. 2, pp. 243–250 (May 2006).  相似文献

The long awaited event of the detection of a gravitational wave from a binary neutron star merger and its electromagnetic counterparts marked the beginning of a new era in observational astrophysics. The brand-new field of gravitational wave astronomy combined with multi-messenger observations will uncover violent, highly energetic astrophysical events that could not be explored before by humankind. This article focuses on the presumable appearance of a hadron–quark phase transition and the formation of regions of deconfined quark matter in the interior of a neutron star merger product. The evolution of density and temperature profiles inside the inner region of the produced hypermassive/supramassive neutron star advises an incorporation of a hadron–quark phase transition in the equation of state of neutron star matter. The highly densed and hot neutron star matter of the remnant populate regions in the QCD phase diagram where a non neglectable amount of deconfined quark matter is expected to be present. If a strong hadron–quark phase transition would happen during the post-merger phase, it will be imprinted in the spectral properties of the emitted gravitational wave signal and might give an additional contribution to the dynamically emitted outflow of mass.  相似文献

The neutron star-neutron star and neutron star-black hole mergers may cause the intense radiation of high-frequency gravitational waves (GWs), they can also produce various electromagnetic emissions by ejecting materials outwards. Therefore, these merger events are the most important targets of current multi-messenger astronomical studies. The thermal transient radiation emitted from merger ejecta is called the kilonova or, more generally, the mergernova, which is powered by the radioactive decays of r-process elements, and the energy injection from the central merger product. This phenomenon was first predicted theoretically by Li and Paczynski in 1998, and confirmed by the optical-infrared observations of the GW170817 event in 2017. As a result, the kilonova/mergernova observation had played a crucial role in locating GW170817, identifying its astrophysical origin, and even constraining the nature of the merger product of this event. This paper briefly reviews the primary progress of kilonova/mergernova researches, including the initiative, improvement, and development of the model, the observational discoveries of candidates, and the optical electromagnetic counterpart of GW170817.  相似文献

Undamped quasiradial fluctuations of rotating neutron stars and the gravitation radiation generated by them are discussed. Two possible sources of energy for maintaining these fluctuations are mentioned: the energy of deformation of the decelerating neutron star (spin down) and the energy released during a jump in the star's angular velocity (glitch). Expressions are derived for the intensity of the gravitational radiation and the amplitude of a plane gravitational wave for an earthbound observer. Estimates of these quantities are obtained for the Vela and Crab pulsars, for which the secular variation in the angular velocity is most often accompanied by irregular variations. It is shown that gravitational waves from these pulsars could be detected by the new generation of detectors.  相似文献

The possibility of using a trap with ultracold neutrons as a detector of dark matter particles with long-range forces is considered. The main advantage of the proposed method lies in the possibility of detecting a recoil energy of ∼10−7 eV. Constraints on the parameters of an interaction potential of the form φ (r) = ae r/b /r between dark matter particles and a neutron are presented at various dark matter densities on Earth. The assumption about the long-range interaction of dark matter particles and ordinary matter is shown to lead to a significant increase in the elastic scattering cross section at low energies. As a consequence, it becomes possible to capture and accumulate dark matter in the Earth’s gravitational field. The accumulated dark matter in the Earth’s gravitational field is roughly estimated. The first experimental constraints on the existence of dark matter with long-range forces on Earth are presented.  相似文献

Intense low-frequency intergalactic gravitational radiation with wave lengths λ smaller than the HUBBLE distance λH ≌ 3000 (100/H0) Mpc but not exceedingly small compared to λH. generates anisotropies in the microwave background radiation. One contribution results from the local wave field and produces mainly a quadrupole-type temperature variation on the sky. Available data on large-scale microwave fluctuations do not exclude appreciable amounts of gravitational background radiation in the Megaparsec wave band. A more sensitive test is provided by a second far-field contribution, which has a small angular scale. Its amplitude depends strongly on the ratio of the (present) rest mass density to the HUBBLE constant, if a cosmological origin of the blackbody radiation is assumed. In a low-density universe, pre-galactic COMPTON scattering of the blackbody radiation is not able to reduce the fluctuations caused by the low-frequency gravitational wave field. The recent small-scale data by PARIJSKIJ would allow only small amplitudes of gravitational waves with an energy density significantly below the critical cosmological density. On the other hand, in a high-density universe, the small angular scale fluctuation in the blackbody radiation is completely damped out, and a gravitational radiation cosmos reaching the critical density is admitted. Independent of the matter density, the data by PARIJSKIJ would confine gravitational background radiation to insignificant amplitudes if a discrete source model for the origin of the microwave background has to be assumed.  相似文献

The interaction of fragmented plasma of active galactic nuclei jets with galactic haloes via gravitational scattering and lensing by dark matter subhaloes is studied using analytical calculations and numerical Monte-Carlo method. The lensing of jet radiation by halo masses is found to be negligible and unobservable. Moving through a galactic halo jet plasma fragments are sequentially deflected on hyperbolic orbits by gravitational field of subhaloes and deviates at some angles when leaving halo, causing widening of the jet. Based on this model jet opening angles are calculated numerically for various values of jet and halo characteristics. Though these angles are very small, gravitational scattering by halo masses results in specific radial profile of jet radiation intensity, that does not depend on halo mass distribution and jet properties. The intensity of jet radiation, obeying the derived profile, decreases by reasonable observable factors giving possibility to probe the presence of dark matter subhaloes.  相似文献

Equilibrium models of differentially rotating nascent neutron stars are constructed, which represent the result of the accretion-induced collapse of rapidly rotating white dwarfs. The models are built in a two-step procedure: (1) a rapidly rotating pre-collapse white dwarf model is constructed; (2) a stationary axisymmetric neutron star having the same total mass and angular momentum distribution as the white dwarf is constructed. The resulting collapsed objects consist of a high-density central core of size roughly 20 km, surrounded by a massive accretion torus extending over 1000 km from the rotation axis. The ratio of the rotational kinetic energy to the gravitational potential energy of these neutron stars ranges from 0.13 to 0.26, suggesting that some of these objects may have a non-axisymmetric dynamical instability that could emit a significant amount of gravitational radiation.  相似文献
