Concentrations of total organic matter (TOC), carbon isotopic compositions of carbonate and organic matter (δ13Ccarb, δ13Corg), and sulfur isotopic compositions of carbonate associated sulfate (δ34Ssulfate) across the Guadalupian–Lopingian (G–L) boundary were analyzed from identical samples of Tieqiao section, Laibin, Guangxi province, South China. The δ13Ccarb values show a positive excursion from − 0.45‰ to the peak of 3.80‰ in the Laibin limestone member of the Maokou Formation, followed by a drastic drop to − 2.60‰ in the lowest Heshan formation, then returned to about 1.58‰. Similar to the trends of the δ13Ccarb values, Δ13Ccarb–org values also show a positive excursion followed by a sharp negative shift. The onset of a major negative carbon isotope excursion postdates the end Guadalupian extinction that indicates subsequent severe disturbance of the ocean–atmosphere carbon cycle. The first biostratigraphic δ34Ssulfate values during the G–L transition exhibit a remarkable fluctuation: a dramatic negative shift followed by a rapid positive shift, ranging from 36.88‰ to − 37.41‰. These sulfate isotopic records suggest that the ocean during the G–L transition was strongly stratified, forming an unstable chemocline separating oxic shallow water from anoxic/euxinic deep water. Chemocline excursions, together with subsequent rapid transgression and oceanic anoxia, were likely responsible for the massive diversity decline of the G–L biotic crisis.  相似文献

Biogeochemical processes involving acetate in sub-seafloor sediments from piston core PC23B from the Bering Sea shelf break were inferred by examining the stable carbon isotopic relationships between acetate and other relevant carbon compounds: total organic carbon (TOC) in the sediment solid phase, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in pore water. Throughout the core, the isotopic composition of acetate (δ13Cacetate), from −31‰ to −29‰, was 13C-depleted by ca. 7‰ vs. DOC (δ13CDOC) and its depth profile approximately paralleled that of δ13CDOC, suggesting that the principal process producing acetate was fermentation of dissolved organic compounds. However, the 13C depletion in δ13Cacetate indicates some contribution of acetogenesis to total acetate production, because acetogenesis results in 13C depletion of the acetate produced. The relative contribution of acetogenesis via the H2/CO2 reaction, calculated by using a two source isotope mixing model, increased with depth in the sulfate reduction zone from 10% to 15% and was constant at 19% in the methanogenic zone. The acetogenic contribution to acetate production in the methanogenic zone underlying the sulfate reduction zone is consistent with reported observations, whereas the occurrence of acetogenesis in the sulfate reduction zone may be related to the contribution of terrestrial organic matter (OM) to the sedimentary OM in that depth interval, because the terrestrial component likely includes precursors that favor organoautotrophic acetogenesis. The high acetate concentration (up to 81 μM) and TOC content (up to 1.4%) at the same depth (<200 cmbsf) suggest that some relationship exists between acetate production rate and TOC content, or that a temperature increase during core storage at room temperature might stimulate acetate-producing microbial activity in the high TOC sediment.  相似文献

Bulk and molecular stable C isotopic compositions and biomarker distributions provide evidence for a diverse community of algal and bacterial organisms in the sedimentary organic matter of a carbonate section throughout the Permian–Triassic (P/Tr) transition at the Idrijca Valley, Western Slovenia. The input of algae and bacteria in all the Upper Permian and Lower Scythian samples is represented by the predominance of C15–C22 n-alkanes, odd C-number alkylcyclohexanes, C27 steranes and substantial contents of C21–C30 acyclic isoprenoids. The occurrence of odd long-chain n-alkanes (C22–C30) and C29 steranes in all the samples indicate a contribution of continental material. The decrease of Corg and Ccarb contents, increase of Rock-Eval oxygen indices, and 13C-enrichment of the kerogen suggest a decrease in anoxia of the uppermost Permian bottom water. The predominance of odd C-number alkylcycloalkanes, C27 steranes, and C17 n-alkanes with δ13C values ∼−30‰, and 13C-enrichment of the kerogens in the lowermost Scythian samples are evidence of greater algal productivity. This increased productivity was probably sustained by a high nutrient availability and changes of dissolved CO2 speciation associated to the earliest Triassic transgression. A decrease of Corg content in the uppermost Scythian samples, associated to a 13C-depletetion in the carbonates (up to 4‰) and individual n-alkanes (up to 3.4‰) compared to the Upper Permian samples, indicate lowering of the primary productivity (algae, cyanobacteria) and/or higher degradation of the organic matter.  相似文献

In the Iberian Chains of northeastern Spain, the Hirnantian Orea Shale comprises three erosive glaciogenic unconformities punctuating two transgressive glaciomarine sequences. These sequences represent ice retreat episodes of grounded ice on a North Gondwanan region of 50–60°S of estimated palaeolatitude. In contrast, the same formation recorded in the Hesperian Chains repeated episodes of extensional tectonic activity: diamictites were associated with slope-related debris flows and slumps commonly interrupted by truncating discontinuities. An analysis of δ13Corg in the Orea Shale has revealed that the lower Orea sequence displays isotopically light baseline values (∼ −27‰) punctuated by minor (2–3‰) shifts. In distal parts, the upper sequence is characterised by a rapid rise in δ13Corg values, which mark a positive excursion, in the range of 2.5‰ to 7‰ over 40 cm of thickness. The stratigraphic gap involved in the intra-Orea erosive unconformity appears to be greater both in proximal exposures and slope-related (Hesperian) areas, where the chemostratigraphic shift was not recorded. Upsection in the three studied sections, the δ13C values display upsection a sharp return to baseline values of −26‰ to −28‰.The Hirnantian strata of the Iberian and Hesperian Chains have recorded three major correlatable events: (i) a the karstic surface that caps upper Katian limestones and reflects the maximum glacial extension; (ii) a single δ13Corg positive peak of ∼6‰ that is recognisable in distal ramp settings, marking the beginning of the second ice retreat episode and probably representing the late Hirnantian HICE shift; and (iii) the erosive unconformity marked by the progradation of the Los Puertos shoreline complexes.  相似文献

The Cenomanian–Turonian boundary was characterized by distinctive positive carbon isotope excursions that were related to the formation of widespread oceanic anoxia. High-resolution geochemical proxies (TOC, CaCO3, δ13Corg, and δ13Ccarb) obtained from bulk rock, planktic foraminifers, and inoceramids from four marine marlstone-dominated stratigraphic sections in the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin (WCSB) were used to establish a regional carbon isotope stratigraphic framework and to investigate paleoenvironmental variability in four different depositional settings. Compared to background δ13Corg, (<−27‰) and δ13Ccarb (<2‰) values which were correlative to stable isotope excursions during Oceanic Anoxic Event (OAE) II worldwide, the δ13Corg (>24‰), and δ13Ccarb (>4‰) derived from inoceramid prisms in the studied sections within WCSB, were elevated during the Late Cenomanian–Early Turonian. During this interval, TOC and CaCO3 values which increased sporadically to >40% and 7%, respectively, were not consistent enough to be used for stratigraphic correlations. Based on the δ13Corg excursions, two bentonite beds were regionally correlated across this portion of the Western Interior Seaway (WIS). The eruption associated with the “Red” bentonite occurred approximately coeval with the maximum δ13Corg-excursion during OAE II in the Neocardioceras juddii Zone, whereas the “Blue” bentonite coincides with the termination of OAE II in the latest Watinoceras devonense zone. During the Late Cenomanian–Early Turonian in the WCSB, benthic foraminifers were sparse or totally absent, indicating the existence of fully anoxic bottom-water conditions. Planktic foraminifera were common in the well-oxygenated surface waters. A benthic oxic zone characterized by several agglutinated species occurs in the eastern part of the WSCB at the beginning of OAE II in the Sciponoceras gracile zone. The termination of the OAE II in the WCSB coincides with the first occurrence of small ammonites (Subprionocyclus sp.) in the western part of the basin.  相似文献

Up until now, it has been assumed that oil in the Palaeozoic reservoirs of the Tazhong Uplift was derived from Upper Ordovician source rocks. Oils recently produced from the Middle and Lower Cambrian in wells ZS1 and ZS5 provide clues concerning the source rocks of the oils in the Tazhong Uplift, Tarim Basin, China. For this study, molecular composition, bulk and individual n-alkane δ13C and individual alkyl-dibenzothiophene δ34S values were determined for the potential source rocks and for oils from Cambrian and Ordovician reservoirs to determine the sources of the oils and to address whether δ13C and δ34S values can be used effectively for oil–source rock correlation purposes. The ZS1 and ZS5 Cambrian oils, and six other oils from Ordovician reservoirs, were not significantly altered by TSR. The ZS1 oils and most of the other oils, have a “V” shape in the distribution of C27–C29 steranes, bulk and individual n-alkane δ13C values predominantly between −31‰ to −35‰ VPDB, and bulk and individual alkyldibenzothiophene δ34S values between 15‰ to 23‰ VCDT. These characteristics are similar to those for some Cambrian source rocks with kerogen δ13C values between −34.1‰ and −35.3‰ and δ34S values between 10.4‰ and 21.6‰. The oil produced from the Lower Ordovician in well YM2 has similar features to the ZS1 Cambrian oils. These new lines of evidence indicate that most of the oils in the Tazhong Uplift, contrary to previous interpretations, were probably derived from the Cambrian source rocks, and not from the Upper Ordovician. Conversely, the δ13C and δ34S values of ZS1C Cambrian oils have been shown to shift to more positive values due to thermochemical sulfate reduction (TSR). Thus, δ13C and δ34S values can be used as effective tools to demonstrate oil–source rock correlation, but only because there has been little or no TSR in this part of the section.  相似文献

As an indicator for terrestrial paleovegetation, the stable isotopic composition of total organic matter (δ13Corg) in loess sediments has been widely used for paleoclimatic reconstruction in western Europe, the Great Plains of North America and the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP). However, little is known about the variation and paleoclimatic significance of the loess δ13Corg in arid Central Asia (ACA). We report δ13Corg data from an Axike (AXK) loess/paleosol profile from the eastern Ili Basin, eastern Central Asia. Along the profile, the δ13Corg values were more negative in the paleosol layers observed in the field and were confirmed by environmental magnetic proxies and a higher concentration of total organic carbon (TOC), consistent with results for western Europe and the northwestern CLP. Our results demonstrate that the loess δ13Corg in this region documents mainly the response of δ13C of locally predominant C3 plants to paleoclimatic variation, especially paleoprecipitation. Our results also suggest that the loess δ13Corg values in the area have the potential for quantitative paleoprecipitation reconstruction on the basis of detailed δ13Corg results from modern plants and surface soils in the future.  相似文献

A composite varve-dated 11.4 m long sediment sequence from Lake Holzmaar, situated in the Eifel region of western Germany, was investigated for total organic matter content, total nitrogen content and stable organic carbon isotopes. Mean time resolution is 75 years for TN and 14 years for δ13Corg. On millennial time scales primary production of lacustrine algae strongly depends on the delivery of nutrients from the catchment. The respective carbon isotope record is characterized by marked variations of δ13Corg ranging from −36.0‰ to −27.0‰ and includes a number of pronounced shifts. Reactions of the lacustrine system and the catchment to changes of environmental parameters, e.g. runoff, solar radiation and temperature, induce changes of algal associations and of lacustrine primary production which are reflected in the sediments as carbon isotope variations. Clear evidence of ecosystem reorganizations is detected by the carbon isotope record around 14,200, 10,400, 9600, 5500, 2700, 1700 and 900 varve years BP. In particular, the Holocene events of 9600, around 5500 and 2700 are interpreted as the expression of massive changes of the climate system. The steady rise of δ13Corg values during the mid-Holocene is interpreted as a continuous climatic amelioration reaching an optimum around 6500 varve years BP. Rapid and large changes of δ13Corg values from 2700 varve years BP to the present indicate major disturbances in the catchment area. These are most probably related to deforestation or reforestation and runoff changes, presumably in conjunction with human impact. Carbon isotopes, thus, characterize the Holzmaar ecosystem in time revealing lacustrine palaeoproductivity as well as providing palaeoenvironmental and palaeoclimatic information.  相似文献

Pleistocene vegetation history on the Chinese Loess Plateau has been traditionally investigated using palynological methods, and questions remain regarding whether an extensive broadleaf deciduous forest ever developed on the loess table under favorable climatic conditions. The authors have employed a C isotope approach to address this question by comparing δ13C values in soil organic matter from different loess ecological domains with known source vegetation to the C isotope values obtained from a paleosol section that can be dated back to 130 ka. The C isotopic compositions of modern soils from the loess table and the loess–desert transition gave δ13C values of −24.5‰ to −18.2‰ and −25.7‰ to −20.7‰, respectively. These C isotopic ratios are consistent with the standing modern vegetation that is dominated by a mixture of C3 and C4 plants and can be distinguished from that in the patchy forest areas where exclusive C3 trees yield a narrow δ13C value range from −26.9‰ to −25‰ (average −26.1‰). Obtained δ13C compositions from paleosols and loess sediments in the Lantian and the Luochuan profiles vary from −24‰ to −16.9‰, indicating a grass-dominated steppe with shifting C3 and C4 contributions controlled mainly by paleoclimatic changes during the late Pleistocene. The present results suggest no extensive forest coverage on the loess table during the past 130 ka even under the most suitable conditions for forest development. This conclusion supports the explanation of natural causes for the development of only patchy forests on the modern loess table and provides critical historical information toward the vegetation restoration project that is currently underway on the Chinese Loess Plateau.  相似文献

Natural gas in the Xujiahe Formation of the Sichuan Basin is dominated by hydrocarbon (HC) gas, with 78–79% methane and 2–19% C2+ HC. Its dryness coefficient (C1/C1–5) is mostly < 0.95. The gas in fluid inclusions, which has low contents of CH4 and heavy hydrocarbons (C2+) and higher contents of non-hydrocarbons (e.g. CO2), is a typical wet gas produced by thermal degradation of kerogen. Gas produced from the Upper Triassic Xujiahe Formation (here denoted field gas) has light carbon isotope values for methane (δ13C1: −45‰ to −36‰) and heavier values for ethane (δ13C2: −30‰ to −25‰). The case is similar for gas in fluid inclusions, but δ13C1 = −36‰ to −45‰ and δ13C2 = −24.8‰ to −28.1‰, suggesting that the gas experienced weak isotopic fractionation due to migration and water washing. The field gas has δ13CCO2 values of −15.6‰ to −5.6‰, while the gas in fluid inclusions has δ13CCO2 values of −16.6‰ to −9‰, indicating its organic origin. Geochemical comparison shows that CO2 captured in fluid inclusions mainly originated from source rock organic matter, with little contribution from abiogenic CO2. Fluid inclusions originate in a relatively closed system without fluid exchange with the outside following the gas capture process, so that there is no isotopic fractionation. They thus present the original state of gas generated from the source rocks. These research results can provide a theoretical basis for gas generation, evolution, migration and accumulation in the basin.  相似文献

Second‐order transgressive–regressive (T–R) cycles, previously recognized using sedimentological criteria in Lower Jurassic hemipelagic deposits from northern Spain, are distinguishable based upon bulk‐rock organic geochemistry [total organic carbon (TOC) and hydrogen index (HI)] and the stable carbon isotope compositions from belemnite rostra. There is a coincidence between regressions and decreasing δ13Cbel, TOC and HI values, and between transgressions and increasing δ13Cbel, TOC and HI values. The δ18O and Mg/Ca records from the belemnite rostra are not always in phase with the T–R cycles. The δ18Obel record reveals, however, a prominent excursion towards higher values within the spinatum Zone that correlates, according to our results, with a regression and with negative shifts in Mg/Ca, δ13Cbel and TOC. On the other hand, an excursion in the δ18Obel towards lower values in the serpentinus Zone also correlates with a peak transgression and with positive shifts in Mg/Ca, δ13Cbel and TOC. These two excursions have been identified in other European regions as geochemical perturbations of the same characteristics. This suggests a link between second‐order relative sea‐level changes and variations in seawater geochemistry that may reflect local and regional palaeoceanographic perturbations in sea‐water temperature, salinity and water circulation during the Early Jurassic. The first detailed isotope-geochemical study of carbonate deposits has been performed in the Lower Famennian stratotype section of the northwestern Kuznetsk Basin (Kosoy Utyos), which was localized in the middle latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere in the Late Devonian. The δ13Ccarb, δ13Corg, and δ18O variation curves were constructed for the section deposits. Geochemical and petrographic studies of carbonates allowed allocation of samples that underwent postsedimentation alteration and exclude them from further interpretation. Compared with coeval sections in the other world's regions, the Kosoy Utyos section is characterized by higher δ13Ccarb values, up to 5.4‰, whereas the maximum value in subequatorial area sections is 4‰. The isotope shift amplitude of the studied section reaches 4.6‰, which is 1.5‰ higher than those in other regions. The δ18O values are 3‰ lower than the ones of the world's coeval sections. The results obtained show that δ13C and δ18O variation trends differ from those of coeval subequatorial sections. The high shift amplitude and maximum δ13Ccarb values in the Kosoy Utyos section are due to the shallow-water carbonate sedimentation environments on the Siberian continental shelf and, probably, the lower temperatures of waters in the middle latitudes as compared with the subequatorial areas.  相似文献

Excellent hydrocarbon source rocks (oil shales), containing Type I organic matter (OM), were deposited in the continental Songliao rift basin during the Late Cretaceous. A major contribution of aquatic organisms (dinoflagellates, green algae, botryococcus) and minor input from macrophytes and land plants to OM accumulation is indicated by n-alkane distribution, steroid composition and δ13C values of individual biomarkers. Microbial communities included heterotrophic bacteria, cyanobacteria and chemoautotrophic bacteria, as well as purple and green sulfur bacteria. The presence of methanotrophic bacteria is indicated by 13C-depleted methyl hopane. The sediments were deposited in a eutrophic, alkaline palaeolake. Highly reducing (saline) bottom water conditions and a stratified water column existed during OM accumulation of the Qingshankou Formation and Member 1 of the Nenjiang Formation. This is indicated by low pristane/phytane, gammacerane index and MTTC ratios, and the presence of β-carotane and aryl isoprenoids. However, an abrupt change in environmental conditions during deposition of Member 2 of the Nenjiang Formation is indicated by significant changes in salinity and redox-sensitive biomarker ratios. A freshwater environment and suboxic conditions in the deep water prevailed during this period. Higher input of terrigenous OM occurred during deposition of the upper Nenjiang Formation.Good oil-to-source rock correlation was obtained using biomarker fingerprints of oil-stained sandstone from the Quantou Formation and oil shales from the Qingshankou Formation. Based on the extent of isomerisation of C31 hopanes, the oil was most probably derived from oil shales of the Qingshankou Formation in deeper parts of the basin.  相似文献

The contribution of soil organic matter (SOM) to continental margins is largely ignored in studies on the carbon budget of marine sediments. Detailed geochemical investigations of late Quaternary sediments (245-0 ka) from the Niger and Congo deep-sea fans, however, reveal that Corg/Ntot ratios and isotopic signatures of bulk organic matter (δ13Corg) in both fans are essentially determined by the supply of various types of SOM from the river catchments thus providing a fundamentally different interpretation of established proxies in marine sciences. On the Niger fan, increased Corg/Ntot and δ13Corg (up to −17‰) were driven by generally nitrogen-poor but 13C-enriched terrigenous plant debris and SOM from C4/C3 vegetation/Entisol domains (grass- and tree-savannah on young, sandy soils) supplied during arid climate conditions. Opposite, humid climates supported drainage of C3/C4 vegetation/Alfisol/Ultisol domains (forest and tree-savannah on older/developed, clay-bearing soils) that resulted in lower Corg/Ntot and δ13Corg (< −20‰) in the Niger fan record. Sediments from the Congo fan contain a thermally stable organic fraction that is absent on the Niger fan. This distinct organic fraction relates to strongly degraded SOM of old and highly developed, kaolinite-rich ferallitic soils (Oxisols) that cover large areas of the Congo River basin. Reduced supply of this nitrogen-rich and 12C-depleted SOM during arid climates is compensated by an elevated input of marine OM from the high-productive Congo up-welling area. This climate-driven interplay of marine productivity and fluvial SOM supply explains the significantly smaller variability and generally lower values of Corg/Ntot and δ13Corg for the Congo fan records. This study emphasizes that ignoring the presence of SOM results in a severe underestimation of the terrigenous organic fraction leading to erroneous paleoenvironmental interpretations at least for continental margin records. Furthermore, burial of SOM in marine sediments needs more systematic investigation combining marine and continental sciences to assess its global relevance for long-term sequestration of atmospheric CO2.  相似文献

Strontium and carbon isotope stratigraphy was applied to a 202 m-thick shallow marine carbonate section within the Late Jurassic Bau Limestone at the SSF quarry in northwest Borneo, Malaysia, which was deposited in the western Palaeo-Pacific. Strontium isotopic ratios of rudist specimens suggest that the SSF section was formed between the latest Oxfordian (155.95 Ma) and the Late Kimmeridgian (152.70 Ma), which is consistent with previous biostratigraphy. The δ13Ccarb values of bulk carbonate range from −0.10 to +2.28‰ and generally show an increasing upward trend in the lower part of the section and a decreasing upward trend in the upper part of the section. A comparable pattern is preserved in the δ13Corg isotope record. Limestone samples of the SSF section mainly preserve the initial δ13Ccarb values, except for the interval 84–92 m, where an apparent negative anomaly likely developed as a result of meteoric diagenesis. Comparing with the Tethyan δ13Ccarb profile, a negative anomaly in the lower SSF section can be correlated with the lowered δ13C values around the Oxfordian/Kimmeridgian boundary. In addition, δ13Ccarb values of the Bau Limestone are generally ∼1‰ lower than the Tethyan values, but comparable with the values reported from Scotland and Russia, located in Boreal realm during the Late Jurassic. This suggests that either the Tethyan record or the other records have been affected by the δ13C values of regionally variable dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC). The Late Jurassic δ13CDIC values are thought to have been regionally variable as a result of their palaeoceanographic settings. This study shows that δ13C chemostratigraphy of the Palaeo-Pacific region contributes to an improved understanding of global carbon cycling and oceanography during this time period.  相似文献

A scientific exploration well(CK1) was drilled to expand the oil/gas production in the western Sichuan depression, SW, China. Seventy-three core samples and four natural gas samples from the Middle–Late Triassic strata were analyzed to determine the paleo-depositional setting and the abundance of organic matter(OM) and to evaluate the hydrocarbon-generation process and potential. This information was then used to identify the origin of the natural gas. The OM is characterized by medium n-alkanes(n C_(15)–n C_(19)), low pristane/phytane and terrigenous aquatic ratios(TAR), a carbon preference index(CPI) of ~1, regular steranes with C_(29) C_(27) C_(28), gammacerane/C_(30) hopane ratios of 0.15–0.32, and δD_(org) of-132‰ to-58‰, suggesting a marine algal/phytoplankton source with terrestrial input deposited in a reducing–transitional saline/marine sedimentary environment. Based on the TOC, HI index, and chloroform bitumen "A" the algalrich dolomites of the Leikoupo Formation are fair–good source rocks; the grey limestones of the Maantang Formation are fair source rocks; and the shales of the Xiaotangzi Formation are moderately good source rocks. In addition, maceral and carbon isotopes indicate that the kerogen of the Leikoupo and Maantang formations is type Ⅱ and that of the Xiaotangzi Formation is type Ⅱ–Ⅲ. The maturity parameters and the hopane and sterane isomerization suggest that the OM was advanced mature and produced wet–dry gases. One-dimensional modeling of the thermal-burial history suggests that hydrocarbon-generation occurred at 220–60 Ma. The gas components and C–H–He–Ar–Ne isotopes indicate that the oilassociated gases were generated in the Leikoupo and Maantang formations, and then, they mixed with gases from the Xiaotangzi Formation, which were probably contributed by the underlying Permian marine source rocks. Therefore, the deeply-buried Middle–Late Triassic marine source rocks in the western Sichuan depression and in similar basins have a great significant hydrocarbon potential.  相似文献

We use the evolution of river sediment characteristics and sedimentary Corg from the Himalayan range to the delta to study the transport of Corg in the Ganga-Brahmaputra system and especially its fate during floodplain transit.A detailed characterisation of both mineral and organic particles for a sampling set of river sediments allows taking into account the sediment heterogeneity characteristic of such large rivers. We study the relationships between sediment characteristics (mineralogy, grain size, specific area) and Corg content in order to evaluate the controls on Corg loading. Contributions of C3 and C4 plants are estimated from Corg stable isotopic composition (δ13Corg). We use the evolution of δ13Corg values from the Himalayan range to the delta in order to study the fate of Corg during floodplain transit.Ganga and Brahmaputra sediments define two distinct linear relations with specific area. In spite of 4-5 times higher specific area, Ganga sediments have similar Corg content, grain size and mineralogy as Brahmaputra sediments, indicating that specific area does not exert a primary control on Corg loading. The general correlation between the total Corg content and Al/Si ratio indicates that Corg loading is mainly related to: (1) segregation of organic particles under hydrodynamic forces in the river, and (2) the ability of mineral particles to form organo-mineral aggregates.Bed and suspended sediments have distinct δ13Corg values. In bed sediments, δ13Corg values are compatible with a dominant proportion of fossil Corg derived from Himalayan rocks erosion. Suspended sediments from Himalayan tributaries at the outflow of the range have low δ13Corg values (−24.8‰ average) indicating a dominant proportion of C3 plant inputs. In the Brahmaputra basin, δ13Corg values of suspended sediments are constant along the river course in the plain. On the contrary, suspended sediments of the Ganga in Bangladesh have higher δ13Corg values (−22.4‰ to −20.0‰), consistent with a significant contribution of C4 plant derived from the floodplain. Our data indicate that, during the plain transit, more than 50% of the recent biogenic Corg coming from the Himalaya is oxidised and replaced by floodplain Corg. This renewal process likely occurs during successive deposition-erosion cycles and river course avulsions in the plain.  相似文献

The Maikop Formation, deposited in eastern Azerbaijan during Oligocene and Early Miocene times, contains prolific source rocks with primarily Type II organic matter. Paleontological analyses of dinoflagellate cysts revealed a Lower to Upper Oligocene age for the investigated succession near Angeharan. A major contribution of aquatic organisms (diatoms, green algae, dinoflagellates, chrysophyte algae) and minor inputs from macrophytes and land plants to organic matter accumulation is indicated by n-alkane distribution patterns, composition of steroids and δ13C of hydrocarbon biomarkers. Microbial communities included heterotrophic bacteria, cyanobacteria, chemoautotrophic bacteria, as well as green sulfur bacteria. Higher inputs of terrigenous organic matter occurred during deposition of the Upper Oligocene units of the Maikop Formation from Angeharan mountains. The terpenoid hydrocarbon composition argues for angiosperm dominated vegetation in the Shamakhy–Gobustan area.High primary bioproductivity resulted in a stratified water column and the accumulation of organic matter rich sediments in the Lower Oligocene units of the Maikop Formation. Organic carbon accumulation during this period occurred in a permanently (salinity-) stratified, mesohaline environment with free H2S in the water column. This is indicated by low pristane/phytane ratios of all sediments (varying from 0.37–0.69), lower methylated-(trimethyltridecyl)chromans ratio in the lower units and their higher contents of aryl isoprenoids and highly branched isoprenoid thiophenes. Subsequently, the depositional environment changed to normal marine conditions with oxygen deficient bottom water. The retreat of the chemocline towards the sediment–water interface and enhanced oxic respiration of OM during deposition of the Upper Oligocene Maikop sediments is proposed.Parallel depth trends in δ13C of total OM, n-alkanes, isoprenoids and steranes argue for changes in the regional carbon cycle, associated with the changing environmental conditions. Increased remineralisation of OM in a more oxygenated water column is suggested to result in low TOC and hydrocarbon contents, as well as 15N enriched total nitrogen of the Upper Oligocene units.  相似文献

This study examined the distributions and stable carbon isotopic compositions of saturated fatty acids (SaFAs) in one 300 cm long sedimentary profile, which was named as Site4B in Shenhu, northern South China Sea. The concentrations of total SaFAs in sediments ranged from 1.80 to 10.16 μg/g (μg FA/g dry sediment) and showed an even-over-odd predominance in the carbon chain of C12 to C32, mostly with n-C16 and n-C18 being the two major components. The short-chain fatty acids (ScFAs; n-C12 to n-C18) mainly from marine microorganisms had average δ13C values of −26.7‰ to −28.2‰, whereas some terrigenous-sourced long-chain fatty acids (LcFAs; n-C21 to n-C32) had average δ13C values of −29.6‰ to −34.1‰. The other LcFAs (n-C24 & n-C26  n-C28; average δ13C values are −26.1‰ to −28.0‰) as well as n-C19 and n-C20 SaFAs (average δ13C values are −29.1‰ and −29.3‰, respectively) showed a mixed signal of carbon isotope compositions. The relative bioproductivity calculation (marine vs. terrigenous) demonstrated that most of organic carbon accumulation throughout the sedimentary profile was contributed by marine organism. The high marine productivity in Shenhu, South China Sea may be related to the hydrocarbon seepage which evidenced by diapiric structures. Interestingly, there is a sever fluctuation of terrigenous inputs around the depth of 97 cm below the seafloor (bsf), probably resulting from the influence of the Dansgaard–Oeschger events and the Younger Dryas event as revealed by 14C age measurements.  相似文献

The petroliferous central Junggar Basin in northwest China is predominantly an oil exploration region. However, its gas exploration also might have good prospects. Thus to assist in gas exploration, the geochemistry and origins of gases are discussed in this paper based on relatively comprehensive analyses of compositions, carbon isotopes and light hydrocarbons of gases. Based on the results, the gas genetic types are grouped into families and combined with the geological setting (e.g., biomarkers of retrograde condensates and source rock characteristics). We show that there are four representative genetic types of gases. The first consists of gases derived from Permian lacustrine mudstones with type I–II kerogen and type III kerogen sources in the Penyijingxi sag. Their representative geochemical feature is δ13C2 ranging from −31.4‰ to −24.7‰. The second is gas sourced from Carboniferous tufaceous mudstones of type III kerogen in the Dishuiquan sag, whose representative geochemical feature is the heaviest values of δ13C1 in the studied samples, ranging from −32.0‰ to −30.4‰. The third consists of gases sourced from Jurassic coals and mudstones in the Shawan–Fukang sag. The light hydrocarbon fingerprints of these gases are similar to those of gases and oils typically derived from Jurassic source rocks in the southern Junggar Basin. The fourth is gas most likely generated from the degradation of crude oil. It is mainly found in the Luliang area and has dryness values as much as 0.999 and δ13C1 ranging from −54.8‰ to −43.2‰. Among these four types of gases, the first (mainly sourced from the Permian lacustrine mudstones in the Penyijingxi sag) is the predominant type.  相似文献
