Legrand and Simon [1989. Solar cycle and geomagnetic activity: a review for geophysicists. Part I. The contributions to geomagnetic activity of shock waves and of the solar wind. Annales Geophysicae 7(6), 565–578] classified one century (1868–1978) of geomagnetic activity, using the Mayaud's Aa index, in four classes related to solar activity: (1) the magnetic quiet activity due to slow solar wind flowing around the magnetosphere, (2) the recurrent activity related to high wind speed solar wind, (3) the fluctuating activity related to fluctuating solar wind and (4) the shock activity due to shock events (CME). In this paper, we use this classification to analyse the solar–geomagnetic activity from 1978 to 2005. We found that during the last three decades the level of geomagnetic quiet activity estimated by Aa indices is decreasing: 2003 is the year of the smallest level of quiet geomagnetic activity since 1868. We compare Legrand and Simon's classification with new in situ solar wind data [Richardson, I.G., Cliver, E.W., Cane, H.V., 2000. Sources of geomagnetic activity over the solar cycle: relative importance of coronal mass ejections, high-speed streams, and slow solar wind. Journal of Geophysical research 105(A8), 18,200–18,213; Richardson, I.G., Cane, H.V., 2002. Sources of geomagnetic activity during nearly three solar cycles (1972–2000). Journal of Geophysical Research 107(A8), 1187] and find a rather good agreement. The differences are only due to minor definitions of the extent of the classes. An attempt is made at defining a more precise standard classification of solar phenomena and at defining time scales of these to understand more precisely the geomagnetic signatures of solar activity.  相似文献

Based on long-term observations of the resonance structure in the electromagnetic background noise spectrum (resonance spectrum structure, RSS), recorded in the frequency range 0.1–10 Hz over one complete solar cycle (11 years, from 1985 to 1995), it was found that the resonance conditions for Alfven waves in the ionosphere (ionospheric Alfven resonator) are determined at midlatitudes by the level of solar activity. RSS are regularly observed in years of minimum solar activity, and are practically absent in years of maximum solar activity. It is shown that consideration of the ionospheric Alfven resonator explains the dependence of the RSS on solar activity.  相似文献

The results of the work of the global observation network are considered, and a comparative analysis of the data of various coronal observatories is performed. The coronal activity index has been reconstructed for the period 1939–2016 based on the data of various observatories in Kislovodsk system. For this purpose, the corona daily intensity maps from the Sacramento Peak and Lomnický ?tít observatories according to the Solar-Geophysical Data journal have been digitized; they supplement the data of other observatories. The homogeneity and continuity of the corona observations at the Kislovodsk station, including activity cycle 24, is confirmed. Unfortunately, the only observatory at present that continues observation of the spectral corona in Fe XIV 5303 Å and Fe XIV 6374 Å lines is the Kislovodsk astronomical station Mountain Astronomical Station (MAS) of the Central Astronomical Observatory, Russian Academy of Sciences (Pulkovo). The data on the combined corona in 5303 Å line are analyzed. It is shown that there is a high correlation of the intensity index of green corona with solar radiation measurements in the vacuum UV region. Data on the beginning of the new 25th activity cycle in the corona at high latitudes are presented.  相似文献

In this paper, we present results derived from global magnetohydrodynamic simulations of the response of the magnetosphere to magnetic clouds. The simulations were driven with solar wind data from 10 January 1997 and 4 May 1998. Both periods were major magnetic storms. We find that during moderate periods of magnetic merging between the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) and the magnetospheric magnetic field, the simulated magnetosphere responds with a loading–unloading behavior characteristic of substorms. However, during periods of strong, sustained, southward IMF, the simulation evolves to a directly driven state, without the loading–unloading component. This behavior is the same as that of the real magnetosphere (Bargatze, L.F., Baker, D.N., McPherron, R.L., Hones, E.W., Jr., 1985. Magnetospheric response for many levels of geomagnetic activity. J. Geophys. Res., 90, 6387–6394), thus providing compelling evidence that the simulation is accurately representing the fundamental features of solar wind–magnetosphere coupling.  相似文献

For various groups of photospheric magnetic fields differing in strength, averaged synoptic maps have been obtained from the data of the Kitt Peak National Solar Observatory (1976–2003). The latitudinal profiles of magnetic field fluxes are considered individually for each 5-G field strength interval. Changes in the maxima of the latitude profiles and their localization in the latitude are studied. The results are evidence that the latitudinal distribution of the magnetic fields changes significantly at field strengths of 5, 15, and 50 G. The magnetic flux for groups of fields differing in strength decreases monotonically as the strength increases, starting from B > 5 G; the fluxes of the southern hemisphere exceed those of the northern hemisphere. A very special group is formed by the weakest fields with B < 5 G, which are opposite in phase to stronger fields in terms of localization and time changes.  相似文献

Schumann resonances (SR) are the electromagnetic oscillations of the spherical cavity bounded by the electrically conductive Earth and the conductive but dissipative lower ionosphere (Schumann in Z Naturforsch A 7:6627–6628, 1952). Energetic emissions from the Sun can exert a varied influence on the various parameters of the Earth’s SR: modal frequencies, amplitudes and dissipation parameters. The SR response at multiple receiving stations is considered for two extraordinary solar events from Solar Cycle 23: the Bastille Day event (July 14, 2000) and the Halloween event (October/November 2003). Distinct differences are noted in the ionospheric depths of penetration for X-radiation and solar protons with correspondingly distinct signs of the frequency response. The preferential impact of the protons in the magnetically unshielded polar regions leads to a marked anisotropic frequency response in the two magnetic field components. The general immunity of SR amplitudes to these extreme external perturbations serves to remind us that the amplitude parameter is largely controlled by lightning activity within the Earth–ionosphere cavity.  相似文献

A tree-ring thickness time series from Passo Fundo (Southern Brazil) for the interval 1741–2004 was studied by spectral, wavelet and cross-wavelet analyses in order to identify the non-stationary characteristics in tree-ring and sunspot number data. Periods corresponding to the solar cycles of 11, 22, and 80 yr were found. The 11 yr solar cycle is detected in tree-ring data only during maximum solar activity interval from 1764 to 1804, 1824 to 1884, and 1924 to 1984. The Hale 22 yr solar cycle was observed in tree-ring wavelet map for the 1764–1864 and 1904–2004 intervals. The Gleissberg solar cycle was also observed in tree-ring wavelet map for the 1844–1904 interval.  相似文献

Solar irradiance models that assume solar irradiance variations to be due to changes in the solar surface magnetic flux have been successfully used to reconstruct total solar irradiance on rotational as well as cyclical and secular time scales. Modelling spectral solar irradiance is not yet as advanced, and also suffers from a lack of comparison data, in particular on solar cycle time scales. Here, we compare solar irradiance in the 220–240?nm band as modelled with SATIRE-S and measured by different instruments on the UARS and SORCE satellites. We find good agreement between the model and measurements on rotational time scales. The long-term trends, however, show significant differences. Both SORCE instruments, in particular, show a much steeper gradient over the decaying part of cycle 23 than the modelled irradiance or that measured by UARS/SUSIM.  相似文献

The South America VLF Network (SAVNET) has been installed in April 2009, and is composed of eight tracking receivers spread over South America, in Brazil, Peru and Argentina, and the Antarctica Peninsula. SAVNET is monitoring the properties of subionospheric propagating waves that reveal changes of the electrical properties of the ionospheric diurnal D-region or nocturnal E-region. In this paper, we will show the ability of the diagnostic obtained by SAVNET to discuss the monitoring of the solar activity on short timescales related to ionization due to solar flares. The sensitivity of flare detection as a function of the solar activity level will be discussed. On longer timescales related to the solar cycle, SAVNET is also able to provide information on the solar Lyman-α radiation. Finally we show that the VLF technique is well suited to search for of seismic-electromagnetic effects, and to provide a genuine diagnostic of high-energy astrophysical phenomena.  相似文献
