The Middle Ordovician Volginsky and Kirensky fossil zones were sampled in the Krivaya Luka section (Krivolutsky suite) that outcrops along the Lena river in Siberia. The Volginsky and Kirensky zones are coeval to the Llandeilo in the global geologic time scale. The Krivaya Luka section consists of siltstones, clays, sandstones, and limestones, and displays a remarkably distinct sedimentary cyclicity, especially in its reddish middle part.Stepwise thermal demagnetization yields three NRM components. Component A, isolated in the 100—250°C interval can be either normal or reversed. The normal A-component has a direction close to recent local magnetic field. The reversed A-component directions are scattered around a direction close to that of the lower Triassic Siberian traps. Component B has unblocking temperatures that range from 400 to 500°C and is represented mainly by normal polarity directions. The B-component, isolated from rocks of the middle part of the section is of a normal polarity with D = 176.5°, I = 30.0° and a North pole position at 16.2°S, 111.3°E. The other parts of the section are characterized by intermediate B-directions, which resulted possibly by partially overlapping A- and C-components. The highest temperature dual-polarity component C was isolated in the 550—670°C interval, resulting in the detection of two complete polarity zones and three magnetic reversals. The C-component is characterized by the following mean directions: for the reversed component D = 335.7°, I = 6.9°, and for the normal component D = 188.6°, I = 28.0°, which is very close to the normal polarity directions of the B-component. The corresponding paleomagnetic North pole for reversed polarity rocks is 32.6°S, 137°E, which is typical of Middle Ordovician rocks from Siberia – the mean pole for Llanvirn-Llandeilo is 30°S, 136°E (cf. Smethurst et al., 1998) – whereas for normal polarity rocks the pole position 17.2°S, 99.1°E is markedly different. Nevertheless, we assume that the C-component records the ancient geomagnetic field of Ordovician times, even though it does not pass the reversals test. This could be explained by overlapping NRM unblocking temperature spectra for the B and C components. In this case, the paleomagnetic pole positions should be interpreted with some caution. In addition, the section was logged and sampled in detail for cyclostratigraphic purposes. Spectral analysis in the depth domain using the high-field susceptibility as input parameter showed that the observed cyclicity is most likely orbitally forced. Detected spectral peaks (significant at the 95% confidence level) were close to the expected positions of the periodicities of precession, obliquity and eccentricity for the Ordovician. Consequently, the average sediment accumulation rate is estimated at 3.5 cm/kyr. Extrapolating this sedimentation rate yields a total duration of at least 1 Myr for the Volginsky fossil zone and 1.2 Myr for the entire Krivaya Luka section.  相似文献

New paleomagnetic investigation was carried out on the late Neogene fluviolacustrine sequence of the Yuanmou Basin, located near the southeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau. Magnetostratigraphic results indicate nine reverse magnetozones (R1 to R9) and eight normal magnetozones (N1 to N8) in the sedimentary profile, which can be correlated to the geomagnetic polarity timescale from C3n.3r to C1r.1r. The age of the sedimentary sequence of the Yuanmou Basin can thus be paleomagnetically constrained to an interval from early Pliocene to Pleistocene, with sedimentation rates varying from 12.5 to 55 cm/kyr. In addition to its highly resolved magnetostratigraphic sequence, the Yuanmou Basin provides a record of Plio-Pleistocene tectono- and climato-sedimentary processes. The mean declinations of the seventeen polarity units (excluding samples with transitional directions) can be grouped into three distinct directional intervals, Group I (2.58–1.37 Ma), Group II (4.29–2.58 Ma) and Group III (4.91–4.29 Ma). These directions indicate that the Yuanmou Basin has probably experienced vertical-axis clockwise rotation of about 12° from 1.4 Ma to 4.9 Ma, which may be related to slip activity of the Red River fault to the southwest and the Xianshuihe–Xiaojiang fault to the east.  相似文献

Continous marine sedimentation characterizes many Late Permian to Early Triassic sections on the Yangtze terrane in South China. The Permo-Triassic (P/Tr) boundary section at Shangsi (Sichuan Province) consists of limestones intercalated with clays and mudstones which belong to the Wuchiapingian and Changxingian (Upper Permian) and the Griesbachian and Dienerian (Lower Triassic) stages. The P/Tr boundary is formed by a clay horizon with an unusually high iridium concentration. The intensity of natural remanent magnetization is very low with a mean of 0.15 mA m−1. About 40% of the samples contain secondary or unstable magnetization components only, whereas the remaining samples carry a characteristic remanent magnetization thought to reflect the polarity of the geomagnetic field during deposition with sufficient accuracy. Normal and reversed polarity of the characteristic magnetization constitute a pattern of at least six polarity zones, the P/Tr boundary being situated very close to the transition from a reversed to a normal polarity zone. The Shangsi polarity sequence represents part of the Illawarra interval of mixed polarity, the exact beginning of which has still to be determined.  相似文献

Sea-floor spreading rates from four locations along the Nazca-Pacific plate boundary and one along the Juan de Fuca-Pacific plate boundary show variations over the past 2.4 m.y., with decreasing rates prior to the Jaramillo to Olduvai time interval (0.92–1.73 m.y. ago) and increasing rates since then. Other Pacific area volcanic phenomena in mid-plate and convergent-boundary settings also show minima about 1.3–1.5 m.y. ago and a maximum at present and another maximum about 5 m.y. ago: extrusion rates along the Hawaiian Ridge; volcanic episodes associated with calc-alkalic provinces of western Oregon and Central America; temporal variations in the SiO2 content of Aleutian ash layers; and the number of deep-sea ash layers. These phenomena may fluctuate in response to changing spreading rates. During times of more rapid spreading increased shear and melting along lithospheric boundaries may occasion increased volcanic activity, whereas during times of less rapid spreading volcanic activity may be less intense.  相似文献

The flow of carbon and nitrogen in sediments of the far northern and northern sections of the Great Barrier Reef continental shelf was examined. Most of the organic carbon (81–94%) and total nitrogen (74–92%) depositing to the seabed was mineralized, with burial of carbon (6–19%) and nitrogen (8–20%) being proportionally less on this tropical shelf compared with other non-deltaic shelves. Differences in carbon and nitrogen mineralization among stations related best to water depth and proximity to river basins, with rates of mineralization based on net ∑CO2 production ranging from 17 to 39 ( mean=23) mmol C m−2 d−1. The overall ratio of O2:CO2 flux was 1.3, close to the Redfield ratio, implying that most organic matter mineralized was algal. Sulfate reduction was estimated to account for ≈30% (range: 6–62%), and denitrification for ≈5% (range: 2–13%), of total C mineralization; there was no measurable CH4 production. Discrepancies between ∑CO2 production across the sediment–water interface and sediment incubations suggest that as much as 5 mmol m−2 d−1 (≈25% of ∑CO2 flux) was involved in carbonate mineral formation. Most microbial activity was in the upper 20 cm of sediment. Rates of net NH4+ production ranged from 1.6 to 2.7 mmol N m−2 d−1, with highly variable N2 fixation rates contributing little to total N input. Ammonification and nitrification rates were sufficient to support rapid rates of denitrification (range: 0.1–12.4 mmol N m−2 d−1). On average, nearly 50% of total N input to the shelf sediment was denitrified. The average rates of sedimentation, mineralization, and burial of C and N were greater in the northern section of the shelf than in the far northern section, presumably due to higher rainfall and river discharge, as plankton production was similar between regions. The relative proportion of plankton primary production remineralized at the seafloor was in the range of 30–50% which is at the high end of the range found on other shelves. The highly reactive nature of these sediments is attributed to the deposition of high-quality organic material as well as to the shallowness of the shelf, warm temperatures year-round, and a variety of physical disturbances (cyclones, trawling) fostering physicochemical conditions favorable for maintaining rapid rates of microbial metabolism. The rapid and highly efficient recycling of nutrients on the inner and middle shelf may help to explain why the coral reefs on the outer shelf have remained unscathed from increased sediment delivery since European settlement.  相似文献

The model of lithospheric thinning and reheating for the origin of the Hawaiian swell assumes that the lower lithosphere (> 60 km) is rapidly reset to an asthenospheric temperature as it passes over the hot spot. It is shown that this heat input induces melting in a few kilometer thick layer of lithosphere just above the thermal anomaly. By solving the appropriate energy equation, the mean degree of melting in the molten layer was estimated to be 1–5% with a total melt thickness of 25–150 m. The minimum width of the thermal anomaly required to account for the observed rate of post-erosional eruptions is of the order of 10–40 km which is probably satisfied. The melt generated by this process matches the petrological and geochemical characteristics of Hawaiian post-erosional lava and their typical MORB-related isotopic signature. Because small degrees of melting are involved, the extraction time scale is long (a few million years) and is consistent with the time span of post-erosional eruptions. Also, the characteristic sequence of Hawaiian volcanism can be explained if the source for Hawaiian lava is considered as a molten layer with melt fraction decreasing upward.  相似文献

Polarity zones of sedimentary sections reflect a pattern of alternating polarity of the geomagnetic field recorded by the remanent magnetization of rocks. Unfortunately, this pattern can have been modified by the variable sedimentation rate, which complicates the identification of polarity zones against the reference geomagnetic polarity time scale. To avoid this obstacle, the present paper suggests a transform applied to both the sequence of levels of polarity reversal horizons and the sequence of ages of polarity reversals before computing their cross-correlation. This transform usually reduces the impact of the variable sedimentation rate so that a sequence of more than eight polarity reversal horizons may be identified without biostratigraphic constraints. Numerical experiments involving random processes to simulate both the duration of polarity reversals and the sedimentation rate proved, however, that not all the parts of a hypothetical stratigraphic section spanning the past 165 Ma would be equally suitable for dating by magnetic polarity stratigraphy. A program performing both the compilation of polarity zones from the directions of the primary magnetization sampled along a section and subsequent identification of these polarity zones is made available online.  相似文献

Paleomagnetic research in the Siberian area provides new data to derive models of relative horizontal movements and the process of amalgamation or consolidation of the Siberian plate. Comparison of the Apparent Polar Wander (APW) curves for different regions of Siberia show that there were several stages of plate consolidation, the most important of which belonged to Baikalian time (c. 520–800 Ma). The consolidation was complicated by rifting processes. There were six megaterrains in pre-Vendian times, which underwent differential horizontal displacements. The joining of the Altai-Sayan fold area and the North-East microplates and fold belts to the Siberian plate, and the separation of the Taimyr peninsula, were the main post-Baikalian events. The most complete geologic sections were studied in conjunction with radiometric age dating and related to the geochronological Precambrian time scale of the USSR. This has led to the discovery of a stratigraphic polarity bias in the early Riphean-Vendian interval. There were five polarity stages in this interval 200–240 Ma each.  相似文献

Detailed sampling of two short magnetozones within the Matuyama Chronozone recorded at DSDP Site 609 (49.86°N, 335.77°E) confirms that one, the Cobb Mountain Subchronozone (1.12 Ma), is a very short, full normal polarity interval and that the other, the older interval, is a record of a geomagnetic excursion which occurred at approximately 1.55 Ma. The Cobb Mountain Subchron lasted approximately 25,000 years, one third the duration of the Jaramillo Subchron. The normal polarity interval is bounded by two transition zones which document an antisymmetry in the sequence of directions in the reverse to normal and normal to reverse polarity transitions. We interpret the antisymmetry as reflecting a dependence upon the sense of the reversal, without significant changes in the relative contributions of non-dipole terms. The polarity interval recorded at 1.55 Ma lasted only 8,800 years with what may be regarded as full polarity directions observed across only 3 cm of stratigraphic section. This feature is interpreted as an excursion of the geomagnetic field and appears to be correlative with the Gilsa Subchron. Similarities between the transition bounding these two magnetozones suggest that these features occur as the result of the same process or triggering mechanisms in the earth's outer core.  相似文献

The Fisherman's Cliff and Bone Gulch Local Faunas are the second and third oldest mammalian fossil assemblages known in the Murray Basin of southeastern Australia. The determination of well constrained ages for these two faunas has been plagued by a lack of diagnostic microfossils or material suitable for isotopic age determinations. Based on previous paleomagnetic data [1,2] the ages of the Fisherman's Cliff and Bone Gulch local faunas were assigned to the Gauss and lower Matuyama Chrons, respectively. However, these dates were not tested by direct magnetostratigraphic studies at either locality. In order to make direct correlations, 22 paleomagnetic and five paleomagnetic sites, respectively, were collected from Fisherman's Cliff and Bone Gulch. Results indicate that the Fisherman's Cliff Local Fauna occurs within a zone of normal magnetic polarity whilst the Bone Gulch Local Fauna occurs within a zone of reversed polarity. By correlation to the Chowilla section, these zones are interpreted to represent the Gauss and lower Matuyama Chrons and ages of 2.47–2.92 and 1.88–2.47 Myr are indicated for the Fisherman's Cliff and Bone Gulch Local Faunas, respectively.  相似文献

Melt generation and extraction along the Hawaiian volcanic chain should be largely controlled by the thermal structure of the Hawaiian swell and the heat source underneath it. We simulate numerically the time- and space-dependent evolution of Hawaiian volcanism in the framework of thermal evolution of the Hawaiian swell, constrained by residual topography, geoid anomalies, and anomalous heat flow along the Hawaiian volcanic chain. The transient heat transfer problem with melting relationships and variable boundary conditions is solved in cylindrical coordinates using a finite difference method. The model requires the lithosphere to be thinned mechanically by mantle plume flow. Melting starts quickly near the base of the plate when the hotspot is encountered. Thermal perturbation and partial melting are largely concentrated in the region where the original lithosphere is thinned and replaced by the mantle flow. The pre-shield Loihi alkalic and tholeiitic basalts are from similar sources, which are a mixture of at least three mantle components: the mantle plume, asthenosphere, and the lower lithosphere. The degree of partial melting averages 10–20%, with a peak value of 30% near the plume center. As a result of continuous compaction, melts are extracted from an active partial melting zone of about 10–20 km thickness, which moves upwards and laterally as the heating and compaction proceed. The rate of melt extraction from the swell increases rapidly to a maximum value of 1 × 105 km3/m.y. over the center of the heat source, corresponding to eruption of large amounts of tholeiitic lavas during the shield-building stage. This volume rate is adequate to account for the observed thickness of the Hawaiian volcanic ridge. Melts from direct partial melting of the mantle plume at depth may be important or even dominant at this stage, although the amount is uncertain. At the waning stage, mixing of melts from the mantle flow pattern with those from low-degree partial melting of the lithosphere may produce postshield alkalic basalts. After the plate moves off the heat source, continuous conductive heating can cause very low degree partial melting (less than 1%) of the lithosphere at shallow depths for about one million years. This process may be responsible for producing post-erosional alkalic basalts. The extraction time for removing such small amount of melts is about 0.4–2 m.y., similar to the time gap between the eruption of post-erosional alkalic lavas and the shield-building stage. Our results show that multi-stage Hawaiian volcanism and the general geochemical characteristics of Hawaiian basalts can be explained by a model of plume-plate interaction.  相似文献

We document the thermal record of breakup of the conjugate Rio Muni (West Africa) and NE Brazil margins using apatite fission track analysis, vitrinite reflectance data and stratigraphic observations from both margins. These results permit determination of the timing of four cooling episodes, and the temperature of samples at the onset of each episode. All samples are interpreted to have experienced higher temperatures in the geological past due to i) elevated basal heatflow (palaeogeothermal gradient in Rio Muni-1 well decaying from 58 °C/km during the Mid Cretaceous to 21.5 °C/km in the Late Cenozoic) and ii) progressive exhumation from formerly greater burial depth. A well constrained history of changing palaeogeothermal gradient allows for much more precise quantification of the thickness of eroded section (exhumation) than if a constant heatflow is assumed. Cooling episodes identified from the palaeotemperature data at 110–95 Ma (both margins) and 85–70 Ma (Rio Muni only) coincide with major unconformities signifying, respectively, the cessation of rifting (breakup) and compressional shortening that affected the African continent following the establishment of post-rift sedimentation (drift). The interval between these separate unconformities is occupied by allochthonous rafts of shallow-water carbonates recording gravitational collapse of a marginal platform. The rift shoulder uplift that triggered this collapse was enhanced by local transpression associated with the obliquely divergent Ascension Fracture Zone, and thermal doming due to the coeval St Helena and Ascension Plumes. The data also reveal a c.45–35 Ma cooling episode, attributed to deep sea erosion at the onset of Eo-Oligocene ice growth, and a c.15–10 Ma episode interpreted as the record of Miocene exhumation of the West African continental margin related to continent-wide plume development. Integration of thermal history methods with traditional seismic- and stratigraphy-based observations yields a dynamic picture of kilometre-scale fluctuations in base level through the breakup and early drift phases of development of these margins. Major unconformities at ocean margins are likely to represent composite surfaces recording not only eustasy, but also regional plate margin-generated deformation, local ‘intra-basinal’ reorganization, and the amplifying effect of negative feedbacks between these processes.  相似文献

The magnetic stratigraphy of the Lower Cretaceous, pelagic Maiolica limestone has been investigated in three partially correlative sections at Gorgo a Cerbara, Presale and Frontale in the northern Umbrian Apennines of central Italy. The white, well-bedded limestone has a magnetic mineralogy dominated by magnetite. Stable magnetic directions isolated by thermal demagnetization define alternating polarity zones in each section. The magnetozone patterns are distinctive and can be correlated with the geomagnetic reversal history derived from the M-sequence marine magnetic anomalies. The three new sections confirm the polarity sequence for anomalies M0 to M10N. Although the Maiolica is inadequately dated, the correlated anomalies, together with the results of other investigations, allow tentative associations of anomalies M0–M19 with individual stages in the Lower Cretaceous and Upper Tithonian. The investigations also demonstrate the usefulness of magnetic stratigraphy in basin analysis. They yield mean sedimentation rates, confirm that there is a hiatus between the base of the Presale section and the underlying Jurassic formations, and show that a large part of the Frontale section has been cut out by faulting.  相似文献

A magnetic polarity pattern for Boreal and Sub-Boreal ammonite zones of the Upper Oxfordian to Lower Kimmeridgian was established and confirmed in four British sections, including the proposed Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) on the Isle of Skye (Scotland) to define the base of the international Kimmeridgian Stage. A coeval pattern for Sub-Mediterranean ammonite zones was compiled from seven sections in Poland, one German section and multi-section composites from France and Spain. The mean paleopole for the European Craton (excluding Spain) at the Oxfordian–Kimmeridgian boundary is 74.2°N, 181.3°E (Α95 = 3.8°). The common magnetic polarity scale enables inter-correlation of ammonite subzones among these three faunal provinces and to the marine magnetic-anomaly M-Sequence. The proposed GSSP at the base of the Pictonia baylei Zone is near the base of an extended interval dominated by reversed polarity, which is interpreted to be Chron M26r. This GSSP level projects to the lower to middle part of the Epipeltoceras bimammatum Subzone, which is the middle subzone of this E. bimammatum Zone in the Sub-Mediterranean standard zonation. In contrast, the traditional placement of the Oxfordian–Kimmeridgian boundary in that Sub-Mediterranean standard zonation (base of Sutneria platynota Zone) is at the base of Chron M25r, or nearly 1 million years younger.  相似文献

The Grindstone Creek Section, Glenn County, Northern California is a sequence of hemipelagic mudstone, siltstone and sandstone interbedded with concretionary limestone and a few thin tuffs and bentonites. Two tuffs have been collected from a narrow interval of this sequence and subjected to mineralogical and isotopic analyses. U&z.sbnd;Pb isotopic analyses of zircon fractions from these volcanic horizons indicate an age of 137.1 + 1.6/−0.6 Ma. A detailed investigation has been conducted on the calcareous nannofossil stratigraphy of this section based on numerous samples with moderately preserved assemblages. The nannoflora is largely of Tethyan affinity, and allows direct correlation with the Berriasian stratotype section, with sections with published magnetostratigraphies and with a DSDP site drilled between known magnetic anomalies. The dated tuffs lie in the lower part of the upper BerriasianCretarhabdus angustiforatus Zone (Assipetra infracretacea Subzone) and within the narrow range ofRhagodiscus nebulosus. At three different sections, this subzone can be correlated with M-sequence Polarity Zones M16 and M16n. An independent magnetostratigraphic correlation is provided at DSDP Site 387, drilled between anomalies M15 and M16, where basal sediments containR. nebulosus. Buchia collected within a meter of the lower tuff lie within theB. uncitoides Zone which is Berriasian in age. The upper tuff level, which occurs 65 m above the lower tuff, is situated within the overlyingB. pacifica Zone. This zone had previously been correlated with the early Valanginian, but is clearly also partly of Berriasian age based on nannofossil stratigraphy. Our results allow an estimate of the age of the Berriasian-Valanginian and Jurassic-Cretaceous boundaries of 135.1 Ma and 141.1 Ma, respectively, and these fall within the range of, but differ significantiy from, several published time-scales.  相似文献

Mean dissolved inorganic nitrogen concentrations ([DIN]) in deep, seasonally stratified lakes with comparable DIN inputs can differ by up to a factor of 3 depending on hydraulic and morphometric properties and/or different trophic states of the lakes. In such lakes, net N sedimentation rates were estimated with two independent methods (sediment core analysis and input-output mass balances). They were higher in eutrophic lakes (Mean: 5.1; SD: ± 1.6 g m–2 yr–1; n = 13) than in oligotrophic lakes (1.6 ± 1.0 g m–2 yr–1; n = 3), but independent of [DIN]. Gaseous N loss rates to the atmosphere, as calculated from combined N- and P-mass balances from selected lakes, ranged from 0.9 to 37.4 g m–2 yr–1 (n = 10) and were positively correlated with [DIN]. Reduction of NO 3 - to N2 is assumed to be the main cause for gaseous N losses. A simple one-box mass balance model for [DIN], based on DIN input and rates and kinetics of N removal processes (net sedimentation and gaseous N loss) is proposed, and validated with a data base on [DIN] and DIN input in 19 deep, seasonally stratified lakes of central Europe. The model illustrated that the amount of water loading per unit surface area of a lake (called water discharge height q) is the critical parameter determining mean lake [DIN] relative to mean input [DIN]. Lakes with a q > 50 m yr–1 have average [DIN] similar to the [DIN] of the inflows regardless of their trophic states, because input and outflow exceed lake-internal N removal processes. A high primary production favors DIN removal in lakes with q < 50 m yr–1. It is concluded that measures to decrease primary production, e.g. by means of P removal programs, lead to an increase of [DIN] in lakes.  相似文献

Paleomagnetic polarity data were obtained from nine sections of the Verde Formation, a late Tertiary carbonate-bearing lacustrine unit in central Arizona. This study tested the applicability of magnetostratigraphy as a geochronologic technique in a restricted terrestrial sedimentary basin, and its objective was to better define the age of the Verde Formation.Intensities of natural remanent magnetism (NRM) ranged from <10?7 to >10?4 gauss. Although secondary components of viscous magnetization commonly were observed, alternating field demagnetization was successful in revealing the polarity of the primary NRM at almost all sites. Thermomagnetic analysis, partial thermal demagnetization of NRM, and polished section analysis together indicate that the primary NRM is a depositional remanence carried by detrital magnetite. Intrabasin stratigraphic correlation of the sections, together with K-Ar ages on interbedded and underlying volcanic rocks has allowed construction of a composite magnetostratigraphic column for the Verde Formation that is correlated with the late Cenozoic polarity time scale. The correlation indicates nearly continuous sedimentation in the Verde basin from ~7.5 to ~2.5 m.y. ago.  相似文献

New analyses reveal two intervals of distinctly lower δ13C values in the terrestrial organic matter of Permian–Triassic sequences in northern Xinjiang, China. The younger negative δ13Corg spike can be correlated to the conspicuous and sharp δ13C drops both in carbonate carbon and organic carbon near the Permian–Triassic event boundary (PTEB) in the marine section at Meishan. The geochemical correlation criteria are accompanied by a magnetic susceptibility pulse and higher abundances of distinctive, chain-like organic fossil remains of Reduviasporonites. The older negative δ13Corg spike originates within a latest Permian regression. Significant changes in organic geochemical proxies are recorded in the equivalent interval of the marine section at Meishan. These include relatively higher concentrations of total organic carbon, isorenieratane, C14–C30 aryl isoprenoids and lower ratios of pristane/phytane that, together, indicate the onset of anoxic, euxinic and restricted environments within the photic zone. The massive and widespread oxidation of buried organic matter that induced these euxinic conditions in the ocean would also result in increased concentrations of 13C-depleted atmospheric CO2. The latest Permian environmental stress marked by the older negative δ13Corg episode can be correlated with the distinct changeover of ostracod assemblages and the occurrences of morphological abnormalities of pollen grains. These observations imply that biogeochemical disturbance was manifested on the land at the end of the Permian and that terrestrial organisms responded to it before the main extinction of the marine fauna.  相似文献

The Umbrian Apennines were the site of pelagic sedimentation throughout most of the Jurassic. Magnetic stratigraphy from four sections spanning many of the Jurassic stages indicates that the geomagnetic field at this time was characterized by two intervals of mixed polarity, separated by an interval of predominantly normal polarity corresponding to the Jurassic “quiet-zone” in the oceanic magnetic anomaly record. Unfortunately, ammonites are poorly preserved or absent throughout most of these sections; the duration of this “quiet-interval” cannot be well defined, although it is probably restricted to the Callovian and Oxfordian stages.  相似文献

The Pollino Range area represents the mostprominent gap in seismicity within thesouthern Apennines. Geomorphic andtrenching investigations along theCastrovillari fault indicate that thisnormal fault is a major seismogenic faultwithin the southern part of this gap. Atleast four surface-faulting earthquakeshave occurred on this fault since latePleistocene age. Radiocarbon dating coupledwith historical consideration set thetime of the most recent earthquake as mostlikely to be between 530 A.D. and 900 A.D.,with the possible widest interval of530–1100 A.D. No evidence for this eventhas been found in the historical records, although its age interval falls within thetime spanned by the seismic catalogues.Slip per event ranges between 0.5 and1.6 m, with a minimum rupture length of13 km. These values suggest a M 6.5–7.0 forthe paleoearthquakes. The minimum long-termvertical slip rate obtained from displacedgeomorphic features is of 0.2–0.5 mm/yr. Avertical slip-rate of about 1 mm/yr is alsoinferred from trenching data. Theinter-event interval obtained from trenchdata ranges between 940 and 7760 years(with the young part of the intervalpossibly more representative; roughly940–3000 years). The time elapsed since themost recent earthquake ranges between aminimum of 900–1100 and a maximum of 1470years. The seismic behavior of this faultappears to be consistent with that of othermajor seismogenic faults of thecentral-southern Apennines. The Pollinocase highlights the fact thatgeological investigations represent apotentially useful technique tocharacterize the seismic hazard of `silent' areas for which adequate historical andseismological data record are notavailable.  相似文献
