We consider the expulsion of the magnetic field from the super-conducting core of a neutron star and its subsequent decay in the crust. Particular attention is paid to a strong feedback of the distortion of magnetic field lines in the crust on the expulsion of the flux from the core. This causes a considerable delay in the core flux expulsion if the initial field strength is larger than 1011 G. It is shown that the hypothesis on the magnetic field expulsion induced by the neutron-star spin-down is adequate only for a relatively weak initial magnetic field B ≈1011 G. The expulsion time-scale depends not only on the conductivity of the crust, but also on the initial magnetic field strength itself. Our model of the field evolution naturally explains the existence of the residual magnetic field of neutron stars. Its strength is correlated with the impurity concentration in neutron-star crusts and anticorrelated with the initial field strengths.  相似文献

We calculate the mass-radius relationship of quark stars with the magnetized densitydependent quark mass model in this work, considering two magnetic field geometries: a statistically isotropic, tangled field and a force-free configuration. In both cases, magnetic field production decreases in the case of maximum quark star mass. Furthermore, a tangled, isotropic magnetic field has a relatively smaller impact on the mass and radius, compared to the force-free configuration, which implies that the geometry of the interior magnetic field is at least as important as the field strength itself when the influence of the strong magnetic field on the mass and radius is assessed.  相似文献

The field lines of closed magnetic structures above the photosphere define a mapping from the photosphere to itself. This mapping is discontinuous, and the field line connectivity to the boundary can change discontinuously in response to continuous changes of field strength and direction, if field lines either end in a singular point of the field or are tangential to the photosphere at one end. Whereas the general existence of singular points is questionable, the field has typically a cell structure due to the presence of segments of the zero line of the photospheric longitudinal field on which the transversal field is directed from negative (pointing into the Sun) to positive fields. The cell boundaries are made up of field lines which all touch the photosphere on one of these line segments. Within each of the cells the field line mapping is continuous. When during a slow evolution a substantial part of a coronal loop or of an arcade has passed from one cell into another a fast dynamic instability may set in which was previously prevented by the anchoring of field lines in the dense photosphere.  相似文献

We apply the model of flux expulsion from the superfluid and superconductive core of a neutron star, developed by Konenkov & Geppert, both to neutron star models based on different equations of state and to different initial magnetic field structures. Initially, when the core and the surface magnetic field are of the same order of magnitude, the rate of flux expulsion from the core is almost independent of the equation of state, and the evolution of the surface field decouples from the core field evolution with increasing stiffness. When the surface field is initially much stronger than the core field, the magnetic and rotational evolution resembles that of a neutron star with a purely crustal field configuration; the only difference is the occurrence of a residual field. In the case of an initially submerged field, significant differences from the standard evolution only occur during the early period of the life of a neutron star, until the field has been re-diffused to the surface. The reminder of the episode of submergence is a correlation of the residual field strength with the submergence depth of the initial field. We discuss the effect of the re-diffusion of the magnetic field on the difference between the real and the active age of young pulsars and on their braking indices. Finally, we estimate the shear stresses built up by the moving fluxoids at the crust–core interface and show that these stresses may cause crust cracking, preferentially in neutron stars with a soft equation of state.  相似文献

A new approach to the galactic seed magnetic field problem is briefly discussed. It is shown that, in early stages of galactic evolution, the hierarchial agglomeration and fragmentation processes can account for the generation of a dynamically important magnetic field. The amplification of this field follows an inverse cascade since a non-zero average value of the field amplified on a smaller scale serves as a seed field on the next (earlier) hierarchial scale. In such a scenario, a problem of how to get things started never occurs as any infinitesimally small battery generated seed field (Lazarian 1992a) can be efficiently amplified passing by through a sufficient number of amplification cascades.  相似文献

We compare two methods for estimating the magnetic field near a black hole—based on a statistical formula that relates the magnetic field on the horizon of the black hole to its mass and on a direct magnetic field determination from optical polarimetric observations. An optically thick magnetized accretion disk is usually formed around the black hole in active galactic nuclei. The linear polarization of the radiation emerging from the disk is related to the local magnetic field and the polarization in Milne’s classical problem. The magnetic field in the region from where the radiation with the observed wavelength comes can be estimated by measuring this polarization. On the other hand, this field can be estimated from the above statistical formula if the field near the black hole is extrapolated into the accretion disk using a standard power law. Comparison of the magnetic field obtained from the observed polarization with the extrapolated field can serve to estimate the accuracy of the latter and the exponent in the adopted extrapolation law. As an example, we compare these two methods for the source NGC 4258.  相似文献

The relationship between sudden geomagnetic field changes in the nightside cusp region and impulsive electron precipitation events in the auroral zone is investigated. The investigations are based on magnetic field measurements from the spacecraft Explorer 35, Explorer 33 and OGO-5 and on X-ray measurements with balloon-borne instruments from Kiruna/Sweden. The sudden field changes are characterized by a decrease of the field strength and a rotation of the field direction. The precipitation events represent strong flux increases within a few minutes. The field changes were accompanied by impulsive precipitation not only in the midnight sector but also on the dayside. They can be regarded as a manifestation of the unsteady magnetospheric processes during the expansion phase. Whereas both phenomena occurred simultaneously on the nightside, the increase of precipitation was delayed by ca. 5 min on the dayside. It is assumed that the simultaneous occurrence on the nightside can be related to the formation of a neutral line with a considerable length in dawn-dusk-direction. Mechanisms are also discussed which could be responsible for the time delay on the dayside.  相似文献

The structure of the solar corona is dominated by the magnetic field because the magnetic pressure is about four orders of magnitude higher than the plasma pressure. Due to the high conductivity the emitting coronal plasma (visible, e.g., in SOHO/EIT) outlines the magnetic field lines. The gradient of the emitting plasma structures is significantly lower parallel to the magnetic field lines than in the perpendicular direction. Consequently information regarding the coronal magnetic field can be used for the interpretation of coronal plasma structures. We extrapolate the coronal magnetic field from photospheric magnetic field measurements into the corona. The extrapolation method depends on assumptions regarding coronal currents, e.g., potential fields (current-free) or force-free fields (current parallel to magnetic field). As a next step we project the reconstructed 3D magnetic field lines on an EIT-image and compare with the emitting plasma structures. Coronal loops are identified as closed magnetic field lines with a high emissivity in EIT and a small gradient of the emissivity along the magnetic field.

Without the shielding of a strong intrinsic magnetic field, the martian atmosphere directly interacts with the impacting solar wind. The neutral constituents of the atmospheric corona can be ionized, and then picked up and accelerated by the magnetic field and convection electric field in the solar wind. A significant fraction of pickup ions escape Mars’ gravitational pull and are lost to space. This non-thermal escape process of heavy species is an important mechanism responsible for atmospheric erosion. While there is a perception that the martian magnetic anomalies are significant for the ionospheric density distribution and the bow shock standoff location, little is known about the quantitative influence of the martian crustal magnetic field on the global distribution of escaping pickup ions. In this paper, we apply a newly developed Monte Carlo ion transport model to resolve the crustal field effect on the pickup oxygen ion distribution around Mars. The background magnetic and electric fields, in which test particles are followed, are calculated using an independent three-dimensional multispecies MHD model. The effects of the crustal magnetic field on particle escape are quantified by varying the crustal field orientation in the model setup and comparing the corresponding test particle simulation results. The comparison is made by turning on or off the crustal field or changing the local time of the strongest field from the dayside to the dawnside. It is found that without the protection of the crustal magnetic field, the total amount of atmospheric escape through the tail region would be enhanced by more than a factor of two. It is shown that the crustal magnetic field not only regionally deflects the solar wind around the martian atmosphere, but also has an important global effect on atmospheric erosion and thus on long-term atmospheric evolution.  相似文献

We present a novel numerical method that allows the calculation of nonlinear force-free magnetostatic solutions above a boundary surface on which only the distribution of the normal magnetic field component is given. The method relies on the theory of force-free electrodynamics and applies directly to the reconstruction of the solar coronal magnetic field for a given distribution of the photospheric radial field component. The method works as follows: we start with any initial magnetostatic global field configuration (e.g. zero, dipole), and along the boundary surface we create an evolving distribution of tangential (horizontal) electric fields that, via Faraday’s equation, give rise to a respective normal-field distribution approaching asymptotically the target distribution. At the same time, these electric fields are used as boundary condition to numerically evolve the resulting electromagnetic field above the boundary surface, modeled as a thin ideal plasma with non-reflecting, perfectly absorbing outer boundaries. The simulation relaxes to a nonlinear force-free configuration that satisfies the given normal-field distribution on the boundary. This is different from existing methods relying on a fixed boundary condition – the boundary evolves toward the a priori given one, at the same time evolving the three-dimensional field solution above it. Moreover, this is the first time that a nonlinear force-free solution is reached by using only the normal field component on the boundary. This solution is not unique, but it depends on the initial magnetic field configuration and on the evolutionary course along the boundary surface. To our knowledge, this is the first time that the formalism of force-free electrodynamics, used very successfully in other astrophysical contexts, is applied to the global solar magnetic field.  相似文献

Transverse oscillations of a thin coronal loop in a zero-beta plasma in the presence of a twisted magnetic field and flow are investigated. The dispersion relation is obtained in the limit of weak twist. The twisted magnetic field modifies the phase difference and asymmetry of standing kink oscillations caused by the flow. Using data from observations the kink speed and flow speed have been determined. The presence of the twisted magnetic field can cause underestimation or overestimation of the flow speed in coronal loops depending on the direction of the flow and twisted magnetic field, but a twisted magnetic field has little effect on the estimated value of the kink speed.  相似文献

A generalization of the perturbation method is applied to the problem of the radial and the non-radial oscillations of a gaseous star which is distorted by a magnetic field. An expression is derived for the perturbation of the oscillation frequencies due to the presence of a weak magnetic field when the equilibrium configuration is a spheroid. The particular application to the homogeneous model with a purely poloidal field inside, due to a current distribution proportional to the distance from the axis of symmetry, and a dipole type field outside is considered in detail. The main result is that the magnetic field has a large and almost stabilizing effect on unstableg-modes, particularly on higher order modes. With the considered magnetic field the surface layers appear to have a large weight.  相似文献

Changes in the configuration of the geomagnetic tail are known to play a fundamental role in magnetospheric substorms. Observations with the UCLA magnetometer on the eccentric orbiter OGO-5 indicate that the most pronounced changes in the midnight meridian occur in the cusp between 8 and 11 Re. In order to organize the observations it is necessary to separate effects on the tail due to the solar wind magnetic field and effects due to substorms. Provided there are no changes in the solar wind there are two distinct phases of a substorm in the near tail: a growth phase and an expansion phase. During each phase the observations depend on the location of the satellite relative to the plasma sheet boundaries. Far behind the Earth is the pure tail region which consists of the lobe and the plasma sheet. In the lobe the field magnitude is characteristically enhanced relative to the dipole. Closer to the Earth is a region of transition. The field magnitude is close to that of the dipole but its orientation is distorted forming a cusp-like field line. Near the Earth is a region of depressed field. Here the field magnitude is much less than that of the dipole, but its orientation is similar. The growth phase of a substorm appears to be the direct consequence of the onset of a southward solar wind magnetic field. In the pure tail region the lobe field begins to increase in magnitude and the plasma sheet thins. The transition region moves earthward and the field lines become more tail-like as the field magnitude increases. In the inner region of depressed field, the field magnitude decreases rapidly. The onset of the expansion phase appears to be a process internal to the magnetosphere and independent of the solar wind. In the depressed field region there is a rapid, turbulent increase in field magnitude. In the transition region there is a sudden decrease in the field magnitude and a return to dipolar orientation. In the tail region the plasma sheet expands rapidly with the field becoming quite dipolar, decreasing slowly in the lobe of the tail.  相似文献

Regarding new bipolar magnetic regions as sources of flux, we have computed the evolution of the photospheric magnetic field during 1976–1984 and derived the corresponding evolution of the mean line-of-sight field as seen from Earth. We obtained a good, but imperfect, agreement between the observed mean field and the field computed for a nominal choice of flux transport parameters. Also, we determined the response of the computed mean field to variations in the transport parameters and the source properties. The results lead us to regard the mean-field evolution as a random-walk process with dissipation. New eruptions of flux produce the random walk, and together differential rotation, meridional flow (if present), and diffusion provide the dissipation. The net effect of each new source depends on its strength and orientation (relative to the strength and orientation of the mean field) and on the time elapsed before the next eruption (relative to the decay time of the field). Thus the mean field evolves principally due to the contributions of the larger sources, which produce a strong, gradually evolving field near sunspot maximum but a weak, sporadically evolving field near sunspot minimum.E. Most work on coronal mass ejection (CME) interpretation focuses on the involved active region rather than on the large-scale coronal context. In this paper a global potential-field source-surface model of the coronal magnetic field is used to evaluate the sensitivity of the coronal field configuration to the location, orientation, and strength of a bipolar active region relative to a background polar field distribution. The results suggest that the introduction of antiparallel components between the field of the active region and the background field can cause significant topological changes in the large-scale coronal magnetic field resembling observations during some simple CMEs. Antiparallel components can be introduced in the real corona by the diffusion and convection of photospheric fields, flux emergence, or erupted or shear-induced twist of active-region fields. Global MHD models with time-dependent boundary conditions could easily test the stability of such configurations and the nature of any related transients.  相似文献

The effect of a helical magnetic field on the oscillations and the stability of a homogeneous self-gravitating rotating cylinder is investigated. The axial field has a tendency to stabilise long wave numbers and to destabilise small wave numbers so that maximum instability occurs for a finite wave number. If the toroidal and the axial component of the field have the same sign, the instability associated with the toroidal field can be removed by the rotation or by the axial field. Rotational instability is reduced but cannot removed by the field. If the components of the field have the opposite sign, rotational instability is increased. The maximum growth rate of the magnetic instability is reduced by a small axial field and tends to a finite value for large axial fields.  相似文献

To quantify changes of the solar coronal field connectivity during eruptive events, one can use magnetic helicity, which is a measure of the shear or twist of a current-carrying (non-potential) field. To find a physically meaningful quantity, a relative measure, giving the helicity of a current-carrying field with respect to a reference (potential) field, is often evaluated. This requires a knowledge of the three-dimensional vector potential. We present a method to calculate the vector potential for a solenoidal magnetic field as the sum of a Laplacian part and a current-carrying part. The only requirements are the divergence freeness of the Laplacian and current-carrying magnetic field and the sameness of their normal field component on the bounding surface of the considered volume.  相似文献
