Coal combustion in power plants in India produces large quantities of coal-related wastes, e.g. fly ash and bottom ash. Indian coals used in power stations are of high ash content, thus resulting in the generation of large amounts of fly ash (~100 million tons/year). Combustion of coal results in enhanced concentration of most radionuclides found in waste materials. In the present work, an attempt has been made to assess the radiological impact of the Kolaghat thermal power plant in West Bengal, India. The fly ashes and coal from the power plant were analysed for 238U, 232Th and 40K by a NaI (Tl)-based gamma-ray spectrometer. The results show that 226Ra and 232Th range from 81.9-126 and 132-169 Bq/kg in fly ash and 25-50 and 39-55 Bq/kg in coal. These results are high compared to those of other thermal power plants of India. Hence, the Kolaghat fly ash has a significant amount of radioactivity which, if not properly disposed, will be a serious threat to the ambient environment.  相似文献

The major element and Sr isotope systematics and geochemistry of coal fly ash and its interactions with environmental waters were investigated using laboratory flow-through column leaching experiments (sodium carbonate, acetic acid, nitric acid) and sequential batch leaching experiments (water, acetic acid, hydrochloric acid). Column leaching of Class F fly ash samples shows rapid release of most major elements early in the leaching procedure, suggesting an association of these elements with soluble and surface bound phases. Delayed release of certain elements (e.g., Al, Fe, Si) signals gradual dissolution of more resistant silicate or glass phases as leaching continues. Strontium isotope results from both column and batch leaching experiments show a marked increase in 87Sr/86Sr ratio with continued leaching, yielding a total range of values from 0.7107 to 0.7138. For comparison, the isotopic composition of fluid output from a fly ash impoundment in West Virginia falls in a narrow range around 0.7124. The experimental data suggest the presence of a more resistant, highly radiogenic silicate phase that survives the combustion process and is leached after the more soluble minerals are removed. Strontium isotopic homogenization of minerals in coal does not always occur during the combustion process, despite the high temperatures encountered in the boiler. Early-released Sr tends to be isotopically uniform; thus the Sr isotopic composition of fly ash could be distinguishable from other sources and is a useful tool for quantifying the possible contribution of fly ash leaching to the total dissolved load in natural surface and ground waters.  相似文献

Understanding how nutrient absorption processes in plants are related to arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) association is critical for predicting the effects of AM symbiosis on elemental cycling for plants. Both mulberry (Morus alba) and Chinese prickly ash (Zanthoxylum bungeanum) are AM-associated plants, widely distributed in southwest China. It was hypothesized that if the nutrient absorption processes were efficiently associated with AM symbiosis in both mulberry and Chinese prickly ash, foliar nutrient concentrations—especially calcium (Ca)—would be primarily determined by the soil conditions in different regions. To investigate this, AM colonization levels of soils, nutrient levels in soils and leaves, and δ13C values of leaves were analyzed for mulberry and Chinese prickly ash. In this study, spore density in soils with low pH was higher than that in soils with high pH. The average concentrations of sugar delivered to roots in both mulberry and Chinese prickly ash in soil with relatively low pH and soil extractable cations were higher than those in other areas. The values of foliar δ13C in both mulberry and Chinese prickly ash in low soil-pH and soil extractable cations were lower than those in contrast areas, indicating that water availability was impacted by soil characteristics. The efficiency in AM-mediated processes might play an important role in translocation between soil nutrients and plant tissue. The results suggest uptake and translocation of nutrients, especially Ca, in AM-associated plants may be affected by an efficiency of AM-mediated processes. Since Sr does not appear to be similarly affected, expressing Ca and other nutrient concentrations relative to Sr could be used to evaluate whether the uptake and translocation of Ca and other nutrients are affected by AM-mediated processes.  相似文献

A coal-based thermal power plant is situated on the bank of the Pandu River, which is a tributary to the Ganges near Kanpur. River sediments downstream from the ash pond outfall are contaminated by fly ash. In order to establish the role of soils and sediments in retaining fly ash-derived heavy metals, copper was investigated as a model metal. A maximum concentration of 70 ppm Cu could be leached from the fly ash, confirming that it is a major source of this metal. Soil samples and river sediments were examined for Cu adsorption in the natural state as well as after treatment with H2O2, EDTA, and H2O2 followed by EDTA. The organic fraction of the samples was determined, and it had a major control on removal of Cu from a solution with 10–4 M initial concentration. Further characterization of organic matter indicated that with reference to natural samples, the humic acid fraction had a copper enrichment factor in the range 9.1–15.1. The factor for fulvic acids, in contrast, was between 3.5 and 5.5. This leads to the conclusion that river deposits rich in humic acids would withstand relatively high metal loads. Only when the metal input exceeds the maximum retention potential, would the metal be fractionated into the aqueous phase and act as a potential biocide.  相似文献

The isotopic compositions of S (δ34S) and C (δ13C) were determined for the coal utilized by a power plant and for the fly ash produced as a by-product of the coal combustion in a 220-MW utility boiler. The coal samples analyzed represent different lithologies within a single mine, the coal supplied to the power plant, the pulverized feed coal, and the coal rejected by the pulverizer. The ash was collected at various stages of the ash-collection system in the plant. There is a notable enrichment in 34S from the base to the top of the coal seam in the mine, with much of the variation due to an upwards enrichment in the δ34S values of the pyrite. Variations in δ34S and in the amount of pyritic S in the coal delivered to the plant show that there was a change of source of coal supplied to the plant, between week one and week two of monitoring, supporting a previous study based on metal and sulfide geochemistry for the same plant. The fly ash has a more enriched δ34S than the pulverized coal and, in general, the δ34S is more enriched in fly ashes collected at cooler points in the ash-collection system. This pattern of δ34S suggests an increased isotopic fractionation due to temperature, with the fly ash becoming progressively depleted in 34S and the flue gas S-containing components becoming progressively enriched in 34S with increasing temperatures. Substantially less variation is seen in the C isotopes compared to S isotopes. There is little vertical variation in δ13C in the coal bed, with δ13C becoming slightly heavier towards the top of the coal seam. An 83–93% loss of solid phase C occurs during coal combustion in the transition from coal to ash owing to loss of CO2. Despite the significant difference in total C content only a small enrichment of 0.44–0.67‰ in 13C in the ash relative to the coal is observed, demonstrating that redistribution of C isotopes in the boiler and convective passes prior to the arrival of the fly ash in the ash-collections system is minor.  相似文献

The natural radiological characteristics and their respective annual effective dose (AED) rates, produced by 226Ra, 232Th and 40K in coal, fly ash and bottom ash from two large coal-fired power plants (CFPPs) of Xi’an were determined by means of γ-ray spectrometry. The average activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K in all ash samples (fly ash and bottom ash samples) from the two CFPPs were 67.6, 74.3 and 225.3 Bq kg−1, respectively. The results are compared with data from other locations. To evaluate the radiological hazards of the natural radioactivity, the radium equivalent activity (Raeq), air absorbed dose rate (D), AED and external hazard index (H ex) are compared with internationally accepted values. Raeq and H ex of all samples except three fly ash samples were less than the limits of 370 Bq kg−1 and unity, respectively. The average D and AED for ash samples were 86.8 nGy h−1 and 0.11 mSv y−1, respectively, which exceed the world average and Xi’an average values.  相似文献

The objective of this study was chemical and radiological characterization of Kastela Bay sediments exposed to numerous anthropogenic sources like deposition of fly and bottom ash enriched in radionuclides and heavy metals, chemical plant, cement plant, iron plant, shipyard, electroplating facility, untreated industrial and domestic waste waters as well as heavy traffic. Totally, 33 samples of the mixture of fly and bottom ash, 12 sediment cores ranging from 0 to 40 cm and nine surface sediment samples were analyzed. Enrichment in heavy metals in the mixture of fly and bottom ash was ranging from 1.5 to 36 times compared to flysch soil while 226Ra and 238U were up to 50 times enriched compared to average activities characteristic for surrounding soils developed on the Middle and Upper Eocene flysch. Maximum 238U activity was approximately 32 times higher and 226Ra approximately 40 times higher in the Kastela Bay sediment compared to mean value determined for Adriatic sediments. The highest enrichment in sediment cores compared to background values were found for Zn (35.6 times), Pb (16 times), Cr (9.1 times) and Ni (4 times)  相似文献

The stable isotope composition of strontium (expressed as δ88/86Sr) may provide important constraints on the global exogenic strontium cycle. Here, we present δ88/86Sr values and 87Sr/86Sr ratios for granitoid rocks, a 150 yr soil chronosequence formed from these rocks, surface waters and plants in a small glaciated watershed in the central Swiss Alps. Incipient chemical weathering in this young system, whether of inorganic or biological origin, has no resolvable effect on the 87Sr/86Sr ratios and δ88/86Sr values of bulk soils, which remain indistinguishable from bedrock in terms of Sr isotopic composition. Although due in part to the chemical heterogeneity of the forefield, the lack of a resolvable difference between soil and bedrock isotopic composition indicates that these soils have thus far witnessed minimal net loss of Sr; a low degree of chemical weathering is also implied by bulk soil chemistry. The isotopic composition of Sr in streamwater is more radiogenic than median soil, reflecting the preferential weathering of biotite in the catchment; streamwater δ88/86Sr values, however, are indistinguishable from bulk soil δ88/86Sr values, implying that no resolvable fractionation of Sr isotopes takes place during release to the weathering flux in the Damma forefield. Analyses of plant tissue reveal that plants (Rhododendron and Vaccinium) preferentially assimilate the lighter isotopes of Sr such that their δ88/86Sr values are significantly lower than those of the soils in which they grow. Additionally, δ88/86Sr values of foliar and floral tissues are lower than those of roots, contrary to observations for Ca, for which Sr is often used as an analogue in weathering studies. We suggest that processes that discriminate against Sr in favour of Ca, due to the different nutritional requirement of plants for these two elements, are responsible for the observed contrast.  相似文献

Use of transfer factors to characterize uptake of selenium by plants   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The radioactive selenium isotope 79Se can be a component of radioactive waste produced in nuclear power plants. The accidental release of 79Se in the environment from power plants or nuclear waste repositories, and subsequent transfer of 79Se into soils, plants and food chain, are relevant concerns in Europe. In environmental risk assessment models, the ability of plants to take up Se is often characterized by means of soil-to-plant transfer factors (TF). However, these recommendations take little or no account of the variability in plant Se accumulation among plant species and differences in Se distribution between plant parts. Also, such factors as soil type, form of Se, climatic conditions, as well as the chemical form in which Se is present in the soil, are not taken into consideration.  相似文献

We analyzed Rb-Sr-Nd isotope ratios of mineral dust in total aerosol load collected with rainwater continuously from 1998 to 2006 at the summit of Mt. Sefuri, northern Kyushu, southwestern Japan. During this period, the total mass of the dust generally increased in late winter, peaked in early spring, and then decreased.87Sr/86Sr in atmospheric mineral dust varied from 0.7096 to 0.7180, and εNd(0)CHUR from −19.9 to −3.5. During heavy deposition periods, the dust had high 87Sr/86Sr isotope ratios and low to middle εNd(0)CHUR values, respectively. These compositions are comparable to those of sand and loess in arid areas of Northeast China, Takla Makan and Western Beijing. Such particles were transported by westerlies from those areas to northern Kyushu in winter and spring. In summer and autumn, the isotopic compositions of the dust varied greatly; however, during light deposition periods, the Sr isotope composition was low. In these seasons, the contributions to the dust from Japanese soils and volcanic ash, transported by southern winds, were relatively larger than in winter and spring because of decreased mineral dust particle transport from the continent. Nevertheless, fine sandy desert particles and loess in general accounted for most mineral dust deposition in northern Kyushu year-round, even in summer. Local soils derived from weathered granite and volcanic ash were minor components only. The net mass of water-insoluble inorganic matter in the collected mineral dust fluctuated from year-to-year; deposition on Mt. Sefuri was relatively large before 2001, decreased from 2002 to 2005, and increased greatly in spring 2006. These year-to-year differences probably reflected changes in the strength of the westerlies and in climate conditions in the arid source areas.  相似文献

Leaching Behavior of Fly Ashes from Power Plants   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The Yanzhou mine district, located in southwestern Shandong Province, is about 1300 km2 with more than 8×109tons of proved coal reserves and there are 10 big power plants in this area. A large amount of coal ashes, which are regarded as waste materials, have been stockpiled in the area and have influenced the environment of the mine district. In this paper, analysis of fly ash samples from three power plants is carried out, the enrichment and concentration of trace elements, Pb, Zn, Cu and As, in coal ashes are analyzed, and petrological and mineralogical characteristics and chemical compositions of coal ashes are studied. The aim of this work is to provide basic scientific data for utilization of ashes and reduction of environmental pollutions.  相似文献

Mercury capture by fly ash C was investigated at five lignite- and subbituminous-coal-burning Bulgarian power plants (Republika, Bobov Dol, Maritza East 2, Maritza East 3, and Sliven). Although the C content of the ashes is low, never exceeding 1.6%, the Hg capture on a unit C basis demonstrates that the low-rank-coal-derived fly ash carbons are more efficient in capturing Hg than fly ash carbons from bituminous-fired power plants. While some low-C and low-Hg fly ashes do not reveal any trends of Hg versus C, the 2nd and, in particular, the 3rd electrostatic precipitator (ESP) rows at the Republika power plant do have sufficient fly ash C range and experience flue gas sufficiently cool to capture measurable amounts of Hg. The Republika 3rd ESP row exhibits an increase in Hg with increasing C, as observed in other power plants, for example, in Kentucky power plants burning Appalachian-sourced bituminous coals. Mercury/C decreases with an increase in fly ash C, suggesting that some of the C is isolated from the flue gas stream and does not contribute to Hg capture. Mercury capture increases with an increase in Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area and micropore surface area. The differences in Hg capture between the Bulgarian plants burning low-rank coal and high volatile bituminous-fed Kentucky power plants suggests that the variations in C forms resulting from the combustion of the different ranks also influence the efficiency of Hg capture.  相似文献

At present, nearly 100 million tonnes of fly ash is being generated annually in India posing serious health and environmental problems. To control these problems, the most commonly used method is addition of fly ash as a stabilizing agent usually used in combination with soils. In the present study, high-calcium (ASTM Class C—Neyveli fly) and low-calcium (ASTM Class F—Badarpur fly ash) fly ashes in different proportions by weight (10, 20, 40, 60 and 80 %) were added to a highly expansive soil [known as black cotton (BC) soil] from India. Laboratory tests involved determination of physical properties, compaction characteristics and swell potential. The test results show that the consistency limits, compaction characteristics and swelling potential of expansive soil–fly ash mixtures are significantly modified and improved. It is seen that 40 % fly ash content is the optimum quantity to improve the plasticity characteristics of BC soil. The fly ashes exhibit low dry unit weight compared to BC soil. With the addition of fly ash to BC soil the maximum dry unit weight (γdmax) of the soil–fly ash mixtures decreases with increase in optimum moisture content (OMC), which can be mainly attributed to the improvement in gradation of the fly ash. It is also observed that 10 % of Neyveli fly ash is the optimum amount required to minimize the swell potential compared to 40 % of Badarpur fly ash. Therefore, the main objective of the study was to study the effect of fly ashes on the physical, compaction, and swelling potential of BC soils, and bulk utilization of industrial waste by-product without adversely affecting the environment.  相似文献

Different plant organs and their corresponding substrate samples were collected from Mangampeta and Vemula barite mining areas of Cuddapah District, Andhra Pradesh. The presence of Indigofera cordifolia exclusively developed on mine dumps of the Vemula barite area and its significant absence away from the mining area shows its indicator characteristics for barium from the geobotanical point of view. Multi-element analysis of these samples was carried out and thebiological absorption coefficient (BAC) was calculated. The BAC is the ratio of the concentration of an element in plant ash to that of its substrate. The results show the presence and/or absence of certain elements in plants and soils, which can be explained on the basis of biogeochemical cycling of elements, exclusion mechanisms, and bioavailability. Further, Tridax procumbens (Li), I. cordifolia (Ba), Cassia angustifolia (Sr), and Kirganelia reticulata (Co) are identified as accumulator plants without considering their substrate concentration. Based on BAC, C. angustifolia (Sr) and Tephrosia purpurea (Zn) are determined to be accumulator plants. Such plant species may be useful in mineral exploration, and reclamation and revegetation of adversely affected mining environments.  相似文献

Clay liners or compacted earthen barriers are important barrier materials used for preventing contaminant transport through soils. A low hydraulic conductivity (k) is a significant parameter that governs the design and construction of clay liners. Compacted expansive clays, which are montmorillonite clays, also have a very low hydraulic conductivity (k). When expansive clays are blended with fly ash, an industrial waste, the hydraulic conductivity (k) further reduces as the ash-clay blends result in increased dry densities at increased fly ash contents. Hence, fly ash-stabilised expansive clay can also be proposed as a unique clay liner material. As expansive clays undergo heave when they come into contact with water, it is necessary to study the heave behaviour of fly ash-stabilised expansive clay liners. This paper presents heave studies on fly ash-stabilised expansive clay liners. Fly ash in different contents by dry weight of the expansive clay was added to the clay, and the ash-clay blend was compacted as a liner overlying a natural field soil layer. Compacted lateritic clay was used for simulating the natural field soil into which contaminants migrate. Calcium chloride (CaCl2) solution of varying concentration (5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 500 mM) was used as the permeating fluid in the heave studies. The rate of heave and the amount of heave of the fly ash-stabilised expansive clay liners were monitored. Deionised water (DIW) was also used as inundating fluid for comparative study. Heave (mm) decreased with increase in solute concentration for all fly ash contents. For a given solute concentration, heave decreased up to a fly ash content of 20 % and thereafter it increased when the fly ash content was increased to 30 %. Heave of the fly ash-stabilised expansive clay liners was correlated with their permeability, liquid limit (LL) and free swell index (FSI) pertaining to the respective fly ash content and CaCl2 concentration.  相似文献

This study investigated the potential application of heavy oil burning fly ash as a precursor to prepare activated carbon. The raw fly ash obtained from a power plant is cleaned by nitric acid/hydrochloric acid and activated at 550–800 °C with hold times of 30 and 60 min to obtain fly ash activated carbon. The phosphoric acid is used as a chemical agent to improve the surface characteristics of the cleaned fly ash. The effects of process variables such as amount of chemical reagents, activation time and temperature were investigated according to two-levels full factorial design. The resultant activated carbons were characterized in terms of Brunauer, Emmett and Teller surface area and total and pore volume. The maximum specific surface area was found of 148.30 m2/g at 800 °C temperatures with 60 min holding time. The test showed that the surface area and pore volumes of the material are also significantly enhanced by the activation process.  相似文献

. Coal-burning power plants in Turkey produce large quantities of coal-related wastes, which are collected through the use of various systems. Coal ash is presently accumulating in Turkey at a rate in excess of 10 million tons (t) annually. Roughly 1% of this is being used in a variety of products such as concrete, aggregate in stabilizing roadways, etc. When coal is burned, loss of material results in an increased concentration of most radionuclides found in the waste material. The object of this study is to analyze radiochemical element concentration of coal, bottom ash, and fly ash, and to evaluate the gross radium isotope activities in groundwaters around Yatagan Thermal Power Plant. The results show that the waste disposal site near the thermal power plant contains a major enhancement of radioactivity.  相似文献

This study investigated the removal efficiency of pharmaceuticals from aqueous solutions supported on chemically treated fly ash. The coal fly ash was supplied by the electric power station in Krakow, Poland. There are plenty of studies showing the utilization of fly ash as a low-cost adsorbent for wastewater containing heavy metals or dyes. Adsorption and immobilization of pharmaceuticals and personal care products on fly ash is a relatively new method but it is a very promising one. In this study, the adsorptive removal of diclofenac, ketoprofen, carbamazepine, bezafibrate, bisphenol A, 17α-ethinyl estradiol and estriol by HCl- and NaOH-treated fly ash was assessed. Chemical treatment of fly ash changed structures of particles and enhanced specific surface areas. HCl-treated fly ash was characterized by the highest BET specific surface area 47.9 m2 g?1 and unburned carbon content 8.1%. Isotherms for all compounds except for 17α-ethinyl estradiol (EE2) and estriol (E3) were linear. Higher linear regression coefficients (R 2) obtained for isotherms of EE2 and E3 show that the Freundlich model better describes their sorption. Adsorption coefficients K d varied between 109.5 (L kg?1) for bisphenol A and 471.5 (L kg?1) for bezafibrate. Freundlich constants (K F) for EE2 and E3 were 62.3 and 119.9 (µg1?1/n L1/n kg?1), respectively. Acid treatment of fly ash increased adsorption of diclofenac, ketoprofen, carbamazepine, bezafibrate and bisphenol A. Comparison of the octanol–water partitioning coefficients (log K OW) with the partitioning coefficients normalized on unburned carbon content (log K UC) revealed similarities but no strong correlation. The increasing of unburned carbon increased sorption of compounds to fly ash.  相似文献
