The source parameters of the major events of a swarm and of two seismic sequences, occurred in the Friuli area (Northeastern Italy) and in Western Slovenia, were estimated. The Claut swarm (C96) occurred since the end of January to June 1996, with a MD 4.3 major shock and it appears composed of three sub-sequences. The two sequences are the Kobarid sequence (K98) started on April 12, 1998 with a MD 5.6 mainshock and the M.te Sernio (S02) sequence caused by the February 14, 2002 earthquake (MD = 4.9). Acceleration and velocity data recorded by the local seismic network of the Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimenale (OGS) and corrected for attenuation, were employed to estimate seismic moments and radiated energies. Source dimensions were inferred from the computed corner frequencies and the stress release was estimated from the Brune stress drop, the apparent stress and the RMS stress drop. On the whole, seismic moments range from 1.7 × 1012 to 1.1 × 1017 N m, and radiated energies are in the range 106–1013 J. Brune stress drops are scattered and do not show any evidence of a self-similarity breakdown for sources down to 130 m radius. The radiated seismic energy scales as a function of seismic moment, with a slope of the scaling relation that decreases for increasing seismic moments. The mechanism of stress release was analyzed by computing the ɛ parameter of Zuniga [Zuniga, R., 1993. Frictional overshoot and partial stress drop. Which one? Bull. Seismol. Soc. Am. 83, 939–944]. The K98 and S02 sequences are characterized by a wide range of the ɛ parameter with stress drop mechanism varying from partial locking to overshoot cases. The ɛ values of the C96 swarm are more homogeneous and close to the Orowan's condition. The radiated seismic energy and the ratio of stress drop between mainshock and aftershocks appear different among the analyzed cases. We therefore investigated the relationship between the stress parameters of the main shock and the energy radiated by the aftershock sequences. For this purpose, we also estimated the source parameters of two other sequences occurred in the area, with mainshocks of MD 4.1 and 5.1, respectively. We found a positive correlation between the Brune stress drop of the mainshock and the ratio between the radiated energy of the mainshock and the summation of the energies radiated by the aftershocks.  相似文献

—?Thirty-three earthquakes which occurred in the Central Apennines (Italy) with Ml ranging from 2.4 to 3.7 have been spectrally analysed using digital recordings from twelve stations of the Rete Sismometrica Marchigiana (RSM) network. Data corrected for geometrical spreading and quality factor Q have been inverted by means of the Generalised Inversion Technique. Site responses have been compared with those obtained by H/V ratio. Site amplifications have been observed both at stations placed on Pleistocene sediments and at one station located at 1800?m altitude. Source parameters have been calculated by fitting the spectra with an automatic procedure adopting the ω2 source model. The seismic moments range from 9.23?×?1019 to 4.28?×?1021 dyne-cm with an average M 0 (S) to M 0 (P) ratio of 1.13?±?0.38. The stress drops are generally low and they vary between 1.1 and 10.2?bar when estimated by using S source spectra, and between 0.5 and 7.1?bar when the P-source spectra are fitted. For the considered range of seismic moments we observe that the stress drop does not have significant dependence on event size.  相似文献

We investigate the scaling relationships among earthquake source parameters using more than 300 good quality broad band seismograms from 30 small earthquakes in the Kumaon Himalaya from the spectral analysis of P and S waves. The average ratio of P/S wave corner frequency is found to be 1.13, which is suggestive of shift in the corner frequency. The estimated seismic moment range from 1.6?×?1013–5.8?×?1015 N?m, while the stress drop varies from 0.6 to 16 bars with 80 % of the events below 10 bars. An analysis of stress drop and apparent stress drop indicates the partial stress drop mechanism in the region. The source radii are between 0.17 and 0.88 km. The total seismic energy varies from 1.79?×?108 to 7.30?×?1011 J. We also observe the variation in seismic energy for a given seismic moment. The scaling relation between the seismic moment and stress drop suggests the breakdown of constant stress drop scaling for the range of seismic moments obtained here for the region. This shows the anomalous behavior of small earthquakes in the region. The study indicates that the stress drop is the dominant scaling factor for the moments studied here.  相似文献

Forty-six mining-induced seismic events with moment magnitude between ?1.2 and 2.1 that possibly caused damage were studied. The events occurred between 2008 and 2013 at mining level 850–1350 m in the Kiirunavaara Mine (Sweden). Hypocenter locations were refined using from 6 to 130 sensors at distances of up to 1400 m. The source parameters of the events were re-estimated using spectral analysis with a standard Brune model (slope ?2). The radiated energy for the studied events varied from 4.7 × 10?1 to 3.8 × 107 J, the source radii from 4 to 110 m, the apparent stress from 6.2 × 102 to 1.1 × 106 Pa, energy ratio (E s/E p) from 1.2 to 126, and apparent volume from 1.8 × 103 to 1.1 × 107 m3. 90% of the events were located in the footwall, close to the ore contact. The events were classified as shear/fault slip (FS) or non-shear (NS) based on the E s/E p ratio (>10 or <10). Out of 46 events 15 events were classified as NS located almost in the whole range between 840 and 1360 m, including many events below the production. The rest 31 FS events were concentrated mostly around the production levels and slightly below them. The relationships between some source parameters and seismic moment/moment magnitude showed dependence on the type of the source mechanism. The energy and the apparent stress were found to be three times larger for FS events than for NS events.  相似文献

Source parameters of the earthquakes of the Baikal rift system   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The dynamic parameters of the earthquake source—the seismic moment, the moment magnitude, the source radius, the stress drop, and the amplitude of displacement—are determined by the amplitude Fourier spectra of the body shear waves (S-waves) for 62 earthquakes of the Baikal rift system with the energy class of K P = 9.1–15.7. In the calculations I used the classical Brune model. The seismic moment of the earthquakes being investigated changes from 3.65 × 1011 N m to 1.35 × 1018 N m, and the radii of earthquake sources vary from 390 m to 1.84 km. The values of the drop in stress Δσ grow with an increase in the seismic moment up to 1.7 × 108 Pa. For the group of weak earthquakes (M w = 1.7–3.3), extremely low values of the drop in stress 103–104 Pa are observed. The maximum amplitude of displacement in the source amounts to 5.95 m. The empirical equations between the seismic moment and the other dynamic parameters of the source are determined. The regional dependence of the seismic moment and energy class is obtained: log M 0 ± 0.60 = 1.03K P + 3.17. The character of the relationship between the seismic moment and the corner frequency indicates that the classical scaling law of the seismic spectrum for the earthquakes in question is not fulfilled. The obtained estimates of the dynamic parameters are in satisfactory agreement with the published data concerning the analogous parameters of the other rift zones, which reflects the general regular patterns of the destruction of the lithosphere and the seismicity in the extension zones of the lithosphere.  相似文献

An apparatus has been devised which allows precise creep and relaxation measurements to be made on minerals and rocks at temperatures up to 1600°C and at very low deviatoric stresses (1 < σ < 300 bar). This paper is concerned with measurements on mantle peridotite (lherzolite) from Balmuccia (Zone of Ivrea, Italy). The reaction of the sample to a step-like increase in stress is called its “creep function”. It is shown that the creep function contains all the necessary information to derive the spectra of the quality factor Q(ω) and of Young's modulus E(ω), within the seismic range of frequencies, provided the material behaves as a linear system. This has been proven up to a strain of 5 × 10?5.The Q?1-spectra at 1200 and 1300°C, obtained by Fourier inversion from the creep function, show no pronounced peak in the frequency band 0.01 < tf < 1 Hz and exhibit a general tendency to decrease slightly with frequency. The creep function: ?(t) = ?u · [1 + 3.7 · q · {(1 + 50t)0.27 ? }], where q is related to Q, satisfactorily describes the data at high temperatures and leads to Q?1(ω, T) = 3 × 103 · ω?0.27 · exp(?30RT)E(ω) is related to Q(ω) by the material dispersion equation. Above 1100°C the unrelaxed Young's modulus decreases rapidly with temperature according to an activation energy of about 20 kcal/mole. A lowering of short period S-wave velocity by 40% and P-wave velocity by 10% occurs below the solidus. Therefore, no partial melting is required in the asthenosphere.Steady-state creep at low axial stresses (20 < σ < 100 bar), obtained from the same rock, follows the relation ?? = 3 × 107 · δ1.4 · exp(?125RT) indicative of grain boundary diffusion or superplasticity. At higher stresses a power law ?? = 45 · δ4 · exp(?125RT) typical of dislocation creep, is found. The frequency dependence of Q and the ratio of the activation energies of Q and are indicative of so called “high-temperature background absorption”, as the dominant mechanism, and of a diffusion-controlled dislocation mobility common to both absorption and creep. From a, b, and c, relations between the effective viscosity ηf and Q of the form: logηe?? = 1α · logQ ? (n ? 1) · log ω + log D are derived, where α ~ 0.25, n is the power of σ, and D is a constant.  相似文献

Fifty earthquakes that occurred in Hungary (central part of the Pannonian basin) with local magnitude $M_\textrm{L}$ ranging from 0.8 to 4.5 have been analyzed. The digital seismograms used in this study were recorded by six permanent broadband stations and 20 short-period ones at hypocentral distances between 10 and 327 km. The displacement spectra for P- and SH-waves were analyzed according to Brune’s source model. Observed spectra were corrected for path-dependent attenuation effects using an independent regional estimate of the quality factor Q S . To correct spectra for near-surface attenuation, the κ parameter was calculated, obtaining it from waveforms recorded at short epicentral distances. The values of the κ parameter vary between 0.01 and 0.06 s with a mean of 0.03 s for P-waves and between 0.01 and 0.09 s with a mean of 0.04 s for SH-waves. After correction for attenuation effects, spectral parameters (corner frequency and low-frequency spectral level) were estimated by a grid search algorithm. The obtained seismic moments range from 4.21×1011 to 3.41×1015 Nm (1.7?≤?M w ?≤?4.3). The source radii are between 125 and 1,343 m. Stress drop values vary between 0.14 and 32.4 bars with a logarithmic mean of 2.59 bars (1 bar = 105 Pa). From the results, a linear relationship between local and moment magnitudes has been established. The obtained scaling relations show slight evidence of self-similarity violation. However, due to the high scatter of our data, the existence of self-similarity cannot be excluded.

The Hsingtai, China earthquakes of March 1966 were a series of destructive earthquakes associated with the Shu-lu graben. Five strong shocks of Ms ≥ 6 occurred within a period of less than a month, the largest of which was Ms 7.2. Body and surface waves over the period range from several to 100 s have been modeled for the four largest events using synthetic seismograms in the time domain and spectral analysis in the frequency domain. Data from ground deformation, local geology, regional seismic network, and teleseismic joint epicenter determination have also been used to constrain the source model and the rupture process. The fault mechanism of the Hsingtai sequence was mainly strike-slip with a small component of normal dip-slip. The strikes of the four largest shocks range from ~ N26° to 30°E, approximately along strike of the major faults of the Shu-lu graben and the aftershock distribution. The source mechanisms can be explained with a NNW-SSE extensional stress and a NEE-SWW compressional stress acting in the area. The major shocks all had focal depths ~ 10 km.The four largest shocks in the sequence were characterized by a relatively simple and smooth dislocation time history. The durations of the far-field source time functions ranged from 3.5 to 5 s, while the rise times were all ~ 1 s. The seismic moments of the four largest earthquakes ranged from 1.43 × 1025 to 1.51 × 1026 dyne cm?1. The fault sizes of the four events were very close. Assuming circular faults, the diameters of the four events were determined to be between 10 and 14 km. Stress drops varied from ~ 52 to 194 bars. A trend of increasing stress drop with earthquake size was observed.A survey of stress drop determinations for 15 major intraplate earthquakes shows that on the average the magnitude of stress drop of oceanic intraplate earthquakes and passive continental margin events is higher (~ 200 to several hundred bars) than that of continental intraplate earthquakes (~ 100 bars or less).  相似文献

—?An intriguing observation in Greenland is a clear spatial correlation between seismicity and deglaciated areas along passive continental margins, a piece of evidence for earthquake triggering due to postglacial rebound. Another piece of evidence for induced seismicity due to deglaciation derives from earthquake source mechanisms. Sparse, low magnitude seismicity has made it difficult to determine focal mechanisms from Greenland earthquakes. On the basis of two normal faulting events along deglaciated margins and from the spatial distribution of epicenters, earlier investigators suggested that the earthquakes of Greenland are due to postglacial rebound. This interpretation is tested here by using more recent data. Broadband waveforms of teleseismic P waves from the August 10, 1993 (m b = 5.4) and October 14, 1998 (m b = 5.1) earthquakes have been inverted for moment tensors and source parameters. Both mechanisms indicate normal faulting with small strike-slip components: the 1993 event, strike = 348.9°, dip = 41.0°, rake =?56.3°, focal depth = 11?km, seismic moment = 1.03?×?1024 dyne-cm, and M w = 5.3; the 1998 event, strike = 61.6°, dip = 58.0°, rake =?95.5°, focal depth = 5?km, seismic moment = 5.72?×?1023 dyne-cm, and M w = 5.1. These and the two prior events support the theory that the shallow part of the lithosphere beneath the deglaciated margins is under horizontal extension. The observed stress field can be explained as flexural stresses due to removal of ice loads and surface loads by glacial erosion. These local extensional stresses are further enhanced by the spreading stress of continental crust and reactivate preexisting faults. Earthquake characteristics observed from Greenland suggest that the dominant seismogenic stresses are from postglacial rebound and spreading of the continental lithosphere.  相似文献

We estimated the source parameters of 53 local earthquakes (2.0<ML<5.7) of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia (Northeastern Italy) area, recorded by the short-period local seismic network of the Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e Geofisica Sperimentale (OGS), in the period 1995-2003. Data were selected on the basis of high quality locations and focal mechanisms. Standard H/V spectral ratios (HVRS) of the three-component stations of the network were performed in order to assess local amplifications, and only stations showing HVRS not exceeding two were considered for the source parameters estimation. Both velocity and acceleration data were used to compute the SH-wave spectra. Observed spectra were corrected for attenuation effects using an independent regional estimate of the quality factor Q and a station dependent estimate of the spectral decay parameter k. Only earthquakes with ML>3.0 recorded with a sampling rate of 125 cps were used to compute k, thus allowing to visualize a linear trend of the high frequency acceleration spectrum up to 40-50 Hz. SH-wave spectra, corrected for attenuation, showed an ω−2 shape allowing a good fit with the Brune model. Seismic moments and Brune radii ranged between 1.5×1012 and 1.1×1017  N m and between 0.1 and 2.7 km respectively. We obtained Mo=1.1×1017  N m for the seismic moment of the Kobarid (SLO) main shock, in good agreement with the Harvard CMT solution (Mo=3.5×1017  N m). Brune stress drops were confined to the range from 0.07 to 5.31 MPa, with an average value of 0.73 MPa and seem to be approximately constant over five orders of magnitude of seismic moment. Radiated seismic energy computed from two nearby stations scales with seismic moment according to , and apparent stress values are between 0.02 and 4.26 MPa. The observed scatter of Brune stress drop data allowed to hypothesize a scaling relation between seismic moment and corner frequency in order to accommodate both Brune stress drop and apparent stress scalings. No systematic differences are evidenced between stress parameters of earthquakes with different focal mechanisms. As a consequence, a relation of the seismic stress release with the strength of rocks can be hypothesized. A high correlation (r>0.9) of Brune stress drop is found with both apparent stress and RMS stress drop, according to and respectively.  相似文献

On the basis of about 300 earthquake wave forms observed in the Shidian M S=5.9 sequences on April 12, 2001 recorded in Kunming Digital Seismic Network, the spectra of shear wave have been used to estimate the focal parameters of these earthquake sequences. The results show that within the magnitude range of 1.5–5.3, the seismic moments are 1010–1016 N·m, the corner frequencies are 0.2–0.8 Hz, radii of the focal rupture are 200–2 500 m and the stress drops are 0.1×105–20×105Pa. Through the statistical analyses of variation of corner frequency f c and stress drop Δσ with time, it is discovered that the average corner frequency of the foreshock sequences is obviously lower than that of the aftershock sequences. Contrarily, the average stress drops Δσ of the foreshock sequences are clearly higher than that of the aftershocks. It is considered that these variation characteristics of average corner frequency and stress drops before and after the main shock have index significance to the precursory information before a strong earthquake. The higher stress drops for the foreshock sequences show that the higher shear stresses have been stored in the area of main shock. After the main shock, most of the stresses have been released, so the aftershock sequences show a rupture process of lower stresses.  相似文献

The magnitude of shear stress in the lithosphere is bounded from below by the apparent stress and stress drop during intraplate earthquakes. Apparent stresses and stress drops for a number of mid-plate earthquakes are calculated from the earthquake magnitude, SH wave amplitude spectra, and estimates of the length of the fault zone. Apparent stresses vary between 0.1 and 2 bars, ifm b is used as a measure of seismic energy, and stress drops lie between 2 and 70 bars. There is no systematic difference in either apparent stress or stress drop between these intraplate events and typical plate boundary earthquakes. These bounds on intraplate shear stresses are consistent with the inference from current models of plate tectonic driving forces that regional stress differences in the plates are typically on the order of 100 bars. The highest stress drops measured for midplate earthquakes under this model represent nearly total release of local tectonic stress.  相似文献

The faulting mechanism and multiple rupture process of the M = 7.4 Miyagi-Oki earthquake are studied using surface and body wave data from local and worldwide stations. The main results are as follows. (1) P-wave first motion data and radiation patterns of long-period surface waves indicate a predominantly thrust mechanism with strike N10° E, dip 20°W, and slip angle 76°. The seismic moment is 3.1 × 1027 dyne-cm. (2) Farfield SH waveforms and local seismograms suggest that the rupture occurred in two stages, being concordant with the two zones of aftershock activity revealed by the microearthquake network of Tohoku University. The upper and lower zones, located along the westward-dipping plate interface, are separated by a gap at a depth of 35 km and have dimensions of 37 × 34 and 24 × 34 km2, respectively. Rupture initiated at the southern end of the upper aftershock zone and propagated at N20°W subparallel to the trench axis. About 11 s later, the second shock, which was located 30 km landward (westward) of the first, initiated at the upper corner of the lower aftershock zone and propagated down-dip N80°W. Using Haskell modelling for this rupture process, synthetic seismograms were computed for teleseismic SH waves and nearfield body waves. Other parameters determined are: seismic moment M0 = 1.7 × 1027dyne-cm, slip dislocationu = 1.9 m, Δσ = 95 bar, rupture velocity ν = 3.2 km s?1, rise time τ = 2 s, for the first event; M0 = 1.4 × 1027dyne-cm, u = 2.4 m, Δσ = 145 bar, for the second event; and time separation between the two shocks ΔT = 11 s. The above two-segment model does not explain well the sharp onsets of the body waves at near-source stations. An initial break of a small subsegment on the upper zone, which propagated down-dip, was hypothesized to explain the observed near-source seismograms. (3) The multiple rupture of the event and the absence of aftershocks between the two fault zones suggests that the frictional and/or sliding characteristics along the plate interface are not uniform. The rupture of the first event was arrested, presumably by a region of high fracture strength between the two zones. The fracture energy of the barrier was estimated to be 1010 erg cm?2. (4) The possible occurrence of a large earthquake has been noted for the region adjacent to and seaward of the area that ruptured during the 1978 event. The 1978 event does not appear to reduce the likelihood of occurrence of this expected earthquake.  相似文献

The accelerograms of the 1999 Chamoli earthquake and nine of its aftershocks, which occurred in Uttaranchal Himalaya, have been analyzed to investigate their source parameters, the site amplification functions and the average effective shear-wave quality factor Qseff in the region. The fault plane solution of the main shock is obtained using the spectral amplitudes of SH waves (approximated by transverse components of accelerograms) of the high-energy packets observed in the accelerograms of the main shock. It is found to be comparable with the reported solutions in other studies. Similarly the other source parameters (viz., seismic moment = (5.03±1.7) × 1025 dyne-cm, stress drop = 65 bars, source duration = 5.2 s and moment magnitude = 6.4) estimated for the main shock are consistent with the values obtained in other studies. The stress drops estimated for the aftershocks vary from 23 bars to 153 bars and the seismic moment from 1.4 × 1023 dyne-cm to 2.9 × 1023 dyne-cm. The average estimated values of the effective shear-wave quality factor Qseff vary from 655±359 in the Uttaranchal sector of Himalaya and 1475±130 in the Delhi region. In general, the Qseff value increases with an increase in the epicentral distance reflecting the penetration of the waves into deeper layers of the crust as the epicentral distance of the observation point increases. These values of Qseff indicate that in general the curst is at low temperatures that will promote brittle behavior and conditions for episodic failure as compared to creep, under the accumulated strains from plate collision at the Himalaya plate boundary. The site amplification characteristics at sites have been identified from the frequency bands of significant amplification observed in the spectral ratios of the horizontal to the vertical component records. The decay of peak ground acceleration (PGA) values with distance has been investigated using the empirical regression curves vis-à-vis the site amplification factors.  相似文献

P-wave first motions, radiation patterns and amplitudes of long-period surface waves, relocated aftershock distributions, leveling and tsunami data indicate that the 1973 Nemuro-Oki earthquake is caused by a low-angle thrust-faulting, representing a rebound at the upper 50 km of the interface between the continental and oceanic lithospheres. Rebound, most likely aseismic, at depths below 50 km, is suggested to take place in the near future from a comparison of recent geologic crustal deformation with pre-seismic and co-seismic data. The estimated seismic moment is about 1314 of that for the neighboring great earthquakes. The macro-seismic data suggest that the 1973 earthquake is smaller than the 1894 Nemuro-Oki earthquake, the last great earthquake in this region. The 1973 earthquake had been predicted on the basis of a seismic gap. Although the prediction was successful as to the location and nature of the faulting and partly as to the occurrence time, it is smaller than the predicted one. A part of the seismic gap may still remain. The difference between the observed seismic slip (1.6 m) and that predicted on the basis of the pre-seismic crustal deformation (3.0 m) indicates either (1) the 1973 earthquake relieved only a part of the strain accumulated in the upper 50 km, or (2) a significant amount of aseismic slip took place on the seismic fault and completely relieved the accumulated strain in the focal region of the 1973 earthquake. If the former is the case, the remaining strain, not only in the focal region, but also in the remaining seismic gap adjoining it, may be relieved in a larger earthquake in the future. The source parameters obtained are as follows: fault plane, dip direction = N40°W, dip angle = 27°; seismic moment = 6.7 · 1027 dyn cm; average slip dislocation, 1.6 m in N63°W direction; stress drop = 35 bars. In these calculations, the fault dimension and the rigidity are assumed to be 100 · 60 km2 and 7.0 · 1011 dyn/cm2, respectively.  相似文献

The Banda Sea earthquake of November 4, 1963 (h = 100 km, mB = 7.8) is probably one of the largest intermediate-depth shocks to have occurred worldwide this century. The mechanism of this earthquake is studied in detail on the basis of P-wave first motion, surface wave and aftershock data. From the analysis of long-period multiple surface waves, a seismic moment of 3.1 × 1028 dyn-cm is obtained, which is the largest reported so far for any intermediate or deep focus shock. This value, together with the estimated fault area of 90 × 70 km2, gives an average dislocation of 7.0 m and a stress drop of 120 bar. This event represents an oblique thrust movement on a plane with dip direction N170°E, dip 48° and rake 52°. A geometrical consideration for the fault plane and the configuration of the inclined seismic zone beneath the Banda arc suggests, almost definitely, that the large-scale faulting took place within the subducted plate and offset it. Further repetition of such large-scale faulting might eventually break the subducted plate. The 1963 Banda Sea earthquake thus represents a seismological manifestation of the large-scale deformation of the subducted plate in the mantle.  相似文献

The source parameters for 213 Bhuj aftershocks of moment magnitude varying from 2.16 to 5.74 have been estimated using the spectral analysis of the SH- waveform on the transverse component of the three-componnet digital seismograms as well as accelerograms. The estimated stress drop values for Bhuj aftershocks show more scatter (Mo0.5 to 1 ∞ Δσ) toward the larger seismic moment values (log Mo ≥ 1014.5 N-m, larger aftershocks), whereas, they show a more systematic nature (Mo3 ∞ Δσ) for smaller seismic moment (log Mo < 1014.5 N-m, smaller aftershocks) values. This size dependency of stress drop has also been seen from the relation between our estimated seismic moment and source radius, however, this size-dependent stress drop is not observed for the source parameter estimates for the other stable continental region earthquakes in India and around the world. The estimated seismic moment (Mo), source radius (r) and stress drop (Δσ) for aftershocks of moment magnitude 2.16 to 5.74 range from 1.95 × 1012 to 4.5 × 1017 N-m, 239 to 2835 m and 0.63 to 20.7 MPa, respectively. The near-surface attenuation factor (k) is found to be large of the order of 0.03 for the Kachchh region, suggesting thick low velocity sediments beneath the region. The estimated stress drop values show an increasing trend with the depth indicating the base of seismogenic layer (as characterized by larger stress drop values (>15 MPa)) lying in 22–26km depth range beneath the region. We suggest that the concentration of large stress drop values at 10–36km depth may be related to the large stress/strain associvated with a brittle, competent intrusive body of mafic nature.  相似文献

Bullen, appears in the PREM Earth model as a 150 km-thick zone in which the gradient of incompressibility with pressure, dKdP, is almost 1.6, instead of 3.2 as in the overlying mantle. Since PREM shows no accompanying change in density or density gradient, we identify D″ as a thermal boundary layer and not as a chemically distinct zone. The anomaly in dKdP is related to the temperature gradient by the temperature dependence of Ks, for which we present a thermodynamic identity in terms of accessible quantities. This gives the numerical result (?Ks/?T)P=?1.6×107 Pa K?1 for D″ material. The corresponding temperature increment over the D″ range is 840 K. Such a layer cannot be a static feature, but must be maintained by a downward motion of the lower mantle toward the core-mantle boundary with a strong horizontal flow near the base of D″. Assuming a core heat flux of 1.6 × 1012 W, the downward speed is 0.07 mm y?1 and the temperature profile in D″, scaled to match PREM data, is approximately exponential with a scale height of 73 km. The inferred thermal conductivity is 1.2 W m?1 K?1. Using these values we develop a new analytical model of D″ which is dynamically and thermally consistent. In this model, the lower-mantle material is heated and softened as it moves down into D″ where the strong temperature dependence of viscosity concentrates the horizontal flow in a layer ~ 12 km thick and similarly ensures its removal via narrow plumes.  相似文献
