The load distribution and deformation of piled raft foundations subjected to axial and lateral loads were investigated by a numerical analysis and field case studies. Special attention is given to the improved analytical method (YSPR) proposed by considering raft flexibility and soil nonlinearity. A load transfer approach using py, tz and qz curves is used for the analysis of piles. An analytical method of the soil–structure interaction is developed by taking into account the soil spring coupling effects based on the Filonenko-Borodich model. The proposed method has been verified by comparing the results with other numerical methods and field case studies on piled raft. Through comparative studies, it is found that the proposed method in the present study is in good agreement with general trend observed by field measurements and, thus, represents a significant improvement in the prediction of piled raft load sharing and settlement behavior.

The influence of vertical loads on the lateral response of group piles installed in sandy soil and connected together by a concrete cap is studied through finite elements analyses. The analyses focus on the five piles in the middle row of 3 × 5 pile groups. The vertical load is applied by enforcing a vertical displacement equivalent to 2% of the pile diameter through the pile cap prior to the application of the lateral loads. The results have shown that the lateral resistance of the leading pile (pile 1) does not appear to vary considerably with the vertical load. However, the vertical load leads to 23%, 36%, 64%, and 82% increase in the lateral resistance of piles 2–5, respectively. The increase in the lateral pressures in the sand deposit is the major driving factor to contribute the change in the lateral resistance of piles, depending on the position of the pile in the group. The distribution of lateral loads among piles in the group tends to be more uniform when vertical loads were considered leading to a more economical pile foundation design.

A simplified method of numerical analysis has been developed to estimate the deformation and load distribution of piled raft foundations subjected to vertical, lateral, and moment loads, using a hybrid model in which the flexible raft is modelled as thin plates and the piles as elastic beams and the soil is treated as springs. Both the vertical and lateral resistances of the piles as well as the raft base are incorporated into the model. Pile–soil–pile, pile–soil–raft and raft–soil–raft interactions are taken into account based on Mindlin's solutions for both vertical and lateral forces. The validity of the proposed method is verified through comparisons with several existing methods for single piles, pile groups and piled rafts. Workable design charts are given for the estimation of the lateral displacement and the load distribution of piled rafts from the stiffnesses of the raft alone and the pile group alone. Additionally, parametric studies were carried out concerning batter pile foundations. It was found that the use of batter piles can efficiently improve the deformation characteristics of pile foundations subjected to lateral loads.

The response of laterally loaded pile foundations may be significantly important in the design of structures for such loads. A static horizontal pile load test is able to provide a load–deflection curve for a single free‐head pile, which significantly differs from that of a free‐ or fixed‐head pile group, depending on the particular group configuration. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the influence of the interaction between the piles of a group fixed in a rigid pile cap on both the lateral load capacity and the stiffness of the group. For this purpose, a parametric three‐dimensional non‐linear numerical analysis was carried out for different arrangements of pile groups. The response of the pile groups is compared to that of the single pile. The influence of the number of piles, the spacing and the deflection level to the group response is discussed. Furthermore, the contribution of the piles constituting the group to the total group resistance is examined. Finally, a relationship is proposed allowing a reasonable prediction of the response of fixed‐head pile groups at least for similar soil profile conditions. The buckling behaviour of the 360 × 152 steel H-piles supporting the integral abutments of the Scotch Road Bridge, located in Trenton, New Jersey, has been studied for the cases of single pile and pile bent. Three-dimensional finite-element models for single pile and pile bent have been developed to study the behaviour of these fully embedded piles under axial and lateral loading. An iterative analysis based on extracting the eigenvalues and eigenvectors (mode shapes) that correspond to the pile(s) critical buckling loads has been adopted. The pile(s) and the surrounding sand were modelled using solid continuum elements in the finite-element model. Material non-linearity is accounted for in both the piles and the soil in the base state of the model. A parametric study has been utilized to determine the effect of the geometric and material properties of the pile and the surrounding sand on the predicted critical buckling loads of the piles. The effects of four parameters have been studied: soil stiffness, pile length, type of connection, and combining vertical and lateral loads. The results from the parametric study showed that the variation of the percentage change in the sand stiffness, pile length, and combining vertical and lateral loads with the critical buckling loads of the 360 × 152 H-piles is nonlinear. Furthermore, the parameters studied are more influential in affecting the critical buckling load of a single pile than a pile bent, with the exception of the ‘type of connection’ parameter.

The environment prevalent in ocean necessitates the piles supporting offshore structures to be designed against lateral cyclic loading initiated by wave action, which induces deterioration in the strength and stiffness of the pile-soil system introducing progressive reduction in the bearing capacity associated with increased settlement of the pile foundation. A thorough and detailed review of literature indicates that significant works have already been carried out in the relevant field of investigation. It is a well established phenomenon that the variation of relative pile-soil stiffness (K rs ) and load eccentricity (e/D) significantly affect the response of piles subjected to lateral static load. However, the influence of lateral cyclic load on axial response of single pile in sand, more specifically the effect of K rs and e/D on the cyclic behavior, is yet to be investigated. The present work has aimed to bridge up this gap. To carry out numerical analysis (boundary element method), the conventional elastic approach has been used as a guideline with relevant modifications. The model developed has been validated by comparing with available experimental (laboratory model and field tests) results, which indicate the accuracy of the solutions formulated. Thereafter, the methodology is applied successfully to selected parametric studies for understanding the magnitude and pattern of degradation of axial pile capacity induced due to lateral cyclic loading, as well as the influence of K rs and e/D on such degradation.

The response of laterally loaded piles placed near the crest of clay slopes is analysed. Three-dimensional finite element analyses are presented for piles of different geometries, installed at several distances from slopes of various inclinations. The results of these analyses are used to establish the pattern of lateral load distribution along the pile length in relation to slope inclination and pile to slope distance. Subsequently, py curves are developed for the case of undrained lateral loading of piles near the crest of clay slopes, a case for which no such curves exist so far. The proposed py curves are implemented into a commercial subgrade reaction computer code and used to perform a series of parametric numerical analyses. The results of these analyses show that the predicted response of piles near slopes with the proposed py curves is in good agreement with the response observed in some pile tests reported in the literature.

A numerical procedure is presented for the downdrag analysis of group piles which penetrate a consolidating upper soil layer to socket into a firm bearing stratum of finite stiffness. The settlement of the consolidating upper soil layer under a surcharge load is estimated using Terzaghi's one-dimensional consolidation theory. Parametric solutions are presented to show the influence of various parameters on the performance of the socketed pile groups in terms of the development of the induced downdrag forces and associated pile head settlements. In general, pile–soil–pile interaction has the beneficial effect of reducing the downdrag forces and settlements of the group piles when compared to the corresponding single pile values, provided that the soil settlements are not so large as to cause full slippage at the interface in all the piles. Reasonable agreement is obtained between the theoretical and experimental results for pile groups subjected to negative skin friction.

A modulus‐multiplier approach, which applies a reduction factor to the modulus of single pile py curves to account for the group effect, is presented for analysing the response of each individual pile in a laterally loaded pile group with any geometric arrangement based on non‐linear pile–soil–pile interaction. The pile–soil–pile interaction is conducted using a 3D non‐linear finite element approach. The interaction effect between piles under various loading directions is investigated in this paper. Group effects can be neglected at a pile spacing of 9 times the pile diameter for piles along the direction of the lateral load and at a pile spacing of 6 times the pile diameter for piles normal to the direction of loading. The modulus multipliers for a pair of piles are developed as a function of pile spacing for departure angle of 0, 90, and 180sup>/sup> with respect to the loading direction. The procedure proposed for computing the response of any individual pile within a pile group is verified using two well‐documented full‐scale pile load tests. The load distributions of the grouped piles under lateral loads acting from one side of the pile cap could be approximately modeled using the elasticity equations with the assumptions that the underground structure is rigid enough to sustain the loads, and only small deformations of the soils are yielded. Variations of the soil–pile interactions along the depths are therefore negligible for simplicity. This paper presents the analytical modeling using the dynamic pile‐to‐pile interaction factors for 2 × 2 and 2 × 3 grouped piles. The results were found comparative with the experimental and numerical results of other studies. Similar to others' findings, it was shown that the leading pile could carry more static loads than the trailing pile does. For the piles in the perpendicular direction with the static load, the loads would distribute symmetrically with the centerline whereas the middle pile always sustains the smallest load. For steady‐state loads with operating frequencies up to 30 Hz, the pile load distributions would vary significantly with the frequencies. It is interesting to know that designing the pile foundation needs to be cautioned for steady‐state vibrations as they are a problem of machine foundation. However, for transient loads or any harmonic loads acting upon relatively higher frequencies, the pile loads could be regarded as uniformly distributed. It is hoped that the numerical results of this paper will be helpful in the design practice of pile foundation. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper presents a numerical analysis of a well-monitored pile–slab-supported embankment for the Beijing–Tianjin high-speed railway in China. Cement–fly ash–gravel piles were used in this project. A coupled two-dimensional mechanical and hydraulic numerical model was used for this analysis and the results are compared with the field measurements including settlement, load distribution between soil and pile, and excess pore pressure. The numerical model calculated the settlement profile close to that measured in the field. The proportion of the load carried by the soil was small thus significantly reducing the settlement. The stress transfer from the soil to the piles reduced the excess pore pressure effectively. A parametric study was conducted to investigate the influence of three key factors on the performance of the embankment. The parametric study indicated that the existence of a cushion reduced the shear force in the slab. The increase in slab thickness and pile stiffness increased the shear force and bending moment in the slab. An increase in pile stiffness reduced the settlement and lateral displacement of the embankment.

Three-dimensional (3D) numerical analyses have been carried out to study the behaviour of a single pile to adjacent tunnelling in the lateral direction of the pile. The numerical analyses have included comparisons between the current study, previous elastic solutions and advanced 3D elasto-plastic analyses. In the numerical analyses, the interaction between the tunnel, the pile and the soil next to the pile has been analysed. The study includes the axial force distributions on the pile, the relative shear displacement between the pile and the soil, the shear stresses at the soil next to the pile and the pile settlement. In particular, the shear stress transfer mechanism along the pile related to tunnel advancement has been analysed by using interface elements allowing soil slip. It has been found that existing solutions may not accurately estimate the pile behaviour since several key issues are not included. Due to changes in the relative shear displacement between the pile and the soil next to the pile with tunnel advancement, the shear stresses and axial force distributions along the pile change drastically. Downward shear stress develops at the upper part of the pile, while upward shear stress is mobilised at the lower part of the pile, resulting in a compressive force on the pile. A maximum compressive force of about 0.25–0.52Pa was developed on the pile, solely due to tunnelling, depending on the pile tip locations relative to the tunnel position, where Pa is the service pile loading prior to tunnelling. The majority of the axial force on the pile developed within ±2D in the transverse direction (behind and ahead of piles) relative to the pile position, where D is the tunnel diameter. In addition, mobilisation of shear strength at the pile–soil interface was found to be a key factor governing pile–soil–tunnelling interaction. The reduction of apparent allowable pile capacity due to tunnelling was dependent on the pile location relative to the tunnel position. Some insights into the pile behaviour in tunnelling obtained from the numerical analyses will be reported and discussed.

This paper describes the development of an approximate approach for the analysis and design of piles subjected to axial and lateral loading and also to vertical and horizontal ground movements. The analysis involves a number of simplifications in order to make it feasible to implement. For example, it considers the behaviour of a ‘representative’ pile in a group to characterize the behaviour of all piles in the group, and adopts approximations to derive free-field interaction factors from the conventional interaction factors for direct loading. The analysis has been implemented via a computer program called EMbankment PIle Group (EMPIG) and has the ability to incorporate the following features:
  • 1. single piles or pile groups,
  • 2. applied vertical, lateral and moment loading on the pile cap,
  • 3. the effects of axial and lateral soil movements caused by embankment construction,
  • 4. a layered soil profile,
  • 5. non-linear axial and lateral response of the piles.
Comparisons between solutions from EMPIG and other independent programs suggest that it is capable of providing results of adequate accuracy for practical design purposes. The analysis has been used to investigate the effects of pile rake on a typical bridge abutment group. The presence of raked piles can have a detrimental effect on group behaviour, especially in the presence of ground movements. Large lateral deflections can be generated and axial forces and moments in the piles are increased. Comparisons are also made with the results of centrifuge model tests on abutment pile groups.
