The results of an objective prism survey of Hα emission-line stars in a 5° × 5° region around NGC 1333 are presented. We have identified 25 stars as having Hα -line in emission, of which 11 have been discovered in the Lick Hα-survey. The limiting magnitude of the present survey is about 16.7 mag. in blue. These are suspected to be mainly T Tauri stars. Based on the UGR(Kiso) multiexposure plates, we have found that, on the [(G - U), (R - G)]-diagram, the domain of Hα emission line stars is fairly well delineated and separate from other stars. Some interesting features in their space distribution are also discussed briefly.  相似文献

Hydrographic changes in the NW Arabian Sea are mainly controlled by the monsoon system. This results in a strong seasonal and vertical gradient in surface water properties, such as temperature, nutrients, carbonate chemistry and the isotopic composition of dissolved inorganic carbon (δ13CDIC). Living specimens of the planktic foraminifer species Globigerina bulloides and Globigerinoides ruber, were collected using depth stratified plankton tows during the SW monsoon upwelling period in August 1992 and the NE monsoon non-upwelling period in March 1993. We compare their distribution and the stable isotope composition to the seawater properties of the two contrasting monsoon seasons. The oxygen isotope composition of the shells (δ18Oshell) and vertical shell concentration profiles indicate that the depth habitat for both species is shallower during upwelling (SW monsoon period) than during non-upwelling (NE monsoon period). The calcification temperatures suggest that most of the calcite is precipitated at a depth level just below the deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM), however above the main thermocline. Consequently, the average calcification temperature of G. ruber and G. bulloides is lower than the sea surface temperature by 1.7±0.8 and 1.3±0.9 °C, respectively. The carbon isotope composition of the shells (δ13Cshell) of both species differs from the in situ δ13CDIC found at the calcification depths of the specimens. The observed offset between the δ13Cshell and the ambient δ13CDIC results from (1) metabolic/ontogenetic effects, (2) the carbonate chemistry of the seawater and, for symbiotic G. ruber, (3) the possible effect of symbionts or symbiont activity. Ontogenetic effects produce size trends in Δδ13Cshell–DIC and Δδ18Oshell–w: large shells of G. bulloides (250–355μm) are 0.33‰ (δ13C) and 0.23‰ (δ18O) higher compared to smaller ones (150–250 μm). For G. ruber, this is 0.39‰ (δ13C) and 0.17‰ (δ18O). Our field study shows that the δ13Cshell decreases as a result of lower δ13CDIC values in upwelled waters, while the effects of the carbonate system and/or temperature act in an opposite direction and increase the δ13Cshell as a result lower [CO32−] (or pH) values and/or lower temperature. The Δδ13Cshell–DIC [CO32−] slopes from our field data are close to those reported literature from laboratory culture experiments. Since seawater carbonate chemistry affects the δ13Cshell in an opposite sense, and often with a larger magnitude, than the change related to productivity (i.e. δ13CDIC), higher δ13Cshell values may be expected during periods of upwelling.  相似文献

Our spectroscopic observation of the Be/X-ray binary LSI+65°010 showed a dramatic variation in November 1992 with an increase by a factor of more than 3 in the equivalent width of the Hα emission line. This supports the view that the primary is a Be star rather than a supergiant. A well-defined double-peaked profile in seen in the spectrum of September 1994: while the red peak remained at 6563 Å, the blue one was −7.2Å to the blue. We suggest that such a profile is caused by the superposition of two emission lines, one from the shell of the Be star, one from an H II region around the neutron star. This provides, for the first time, direct observational evidence for the existence of a H II region around compact object and caused by X-ray emission. On 1992-11-04, the red side of the Hα line did not change while the blue side was greatly enhanced. We suggest that this may be caused by the H II region around the neutron star.  相似文献

Although it is generally accepted that most, if not all, of the molecular hydrogen in interstellar space is formed through recombination reactions on grains, the exact mechanism by which this is accomplished is far from certain. In the past, great emphasis had been placed on the physical adsorption of H atoms on cold dielectric grains and their subsequent recombination and desorption as H2 molecules. However, a careful re-examination of the problem leads us to believe that a rate coefficient ofk10–17 cm3 s–1—the value usually quoted in the literature—is a very strong overestimate. The same thing can be said for the recombination of H atoms on graphite grains. Since two-body gas phase reactions are not sufficient by themselves to account for the observed abundances of H2, an alternate mechanism must exist. It is suggested that the chemisorption of hydrogen on transition metal grains may be just that formation mechanism. After separating the adsorption rate equations from those of desorption and using experimentally determined parameters, it is shown that transition metal grains can successfully catalyze as much H2 as the theoretical maximum predicted for cold ice grains, even though metal grains are probably less than 10% as abundant (by mass) than dielectrics.  相似文献

Since gas-phase reactions alone cannot account for the observed abundances of H2 in the typical interstellar cloud, one or more surface reactions are probably involved. Of the three possible candidates, only the catalytic production of H2 on transition metal grains is supported by laboratory evidence. Using the rate equations developed in a previous paper for this process, the steady-state equilibrium abundances of H, H2,e , H+, H, H2 +, and H3 + are calculated for large (r>10 pcs;M102 M ), tenuous (n=102–104 cm–3) hydrogen dust clouds under a wide variety of conditions. In addition to the four rate equations involved in the catalytic reactions, 18 gas-phase and one additional surface reaction—the physical adsorption of H-atoms on cold, dielectric surfaces and their subsequent recombination and desorption as H2 molecules—are included in the calculations. It is found that metal grains can produce as much interstellar H2 as the best physical adsorption mechanism under optimum conditions if the extinction in the visible is less than 5m.0. The three critical parameters for efficient catalysis (activation energy of desorption, grain temperature, and the number density of available sites) are examined, and it is shown that catalytic reactions are efficient producers of H2 under all but the most unfavorable conditions.  相似文献

We present an attempt to analyse the spectra of SN 1987n in NGC 7606, covering a period of 10 days from the time of maximum brightness. The velocities in the rest frame of NGC 7606 and the depths of the spectral lines at maximum light are very close to those of SN 1981b in NGC 4536, slight differences being nevertheless present. A distance to NGC 7606 of 46±11 Mpc for anH 0 value of 50 km s–1 Mpc–1 is inferred from Pskovskii's relation.The analysis carried out within a standard simple model of spectral synthesis involves a high uncertainty in the abundance determinations for the intermediate-mass elements quoted. This uncertainty arises on the one hand from the free choice of the excitation temperature and from the sensitivity to changes in the excitation temperature of the depths of the strongest lines of those elements and, on the other hand, from the impossibility of obtaining within this model an estimate of other abundances — He, O, Na, S — which have NLTE populations.The analysis developed in a new model based (as is the standard one) on Sobolev's approximation but allowing for a more realistic continuum treatment points to an important attenuation effect on the radiation in the lines, due to the continuum scattering, which can also affect abundance determinations.  相似文献

Based on the spectra of 4 high-redshift quasars (resolution 2A) obtained by us [1–5] using IPCS on the RGO Cassegrain spectrograph of the AAT, we point out the following. 1. Auto-correlation peaks at in PKS 0805+046 and PKS 1442+101 suggest that the large number of absorption lines shortward of Lα in high redshift quasars are due to absorption by hydrogen clouds. 2. The distribution of absorption lines and the correlation function of indicate that PKS 0528-250 may be an exception, requiring further observation. 3. Absorption redshift systems containing metallic lines may be produced by either matter ejected from the quasar, or an associated galaxy cluster or an intervening galaxy. 4. The randomness in the column density and the dispersion velocity deduced from the curve of growth of the pair supports the hypothesis that the pure Lα absorption comes from primitive hydrogen clouds in the early, exploding universe. 5. The number of hydrogen clouds per unit redshift interval is determined by the data of absorption lines of quasars with Z > 3.  相似文献

Tree ring chronologies provide long-term records of growth in natural environmental conditions and may be used to evaluate impacts of climatic change and CO2 increase on forest productivity. This study focuses on 21 Pinus halepensis forest stands in calcareous Provence (in the south-east of France). A chronology of net primary productivity (NPP) both for the 20th century and for each stand was estimated using tree ring data (width and density). The response of each stand to climate in terms of NPP was statistically modelled using response functions. Anomalies between estimated NPP and NPP reconstructed by response functions were calculated to evaluate the fertilising effect of CO2 increase on tree growth. The changes in anomalies during the 20th century were attributed to the effect of CO2 increase. A multiplying factor (β) linking CO2 concentration and stand productivity was then calculated, on the basis of the trend observed during the 20th century. In this study, the value of the β factor obtained under natural conditions (β=0.50) is consistent with those from controlled CO2 enrichment experiments. Both response functions and the β factor were used to predict NPP changes for a 2×CO2 scenario. The 2×CO2 climate was obtained using predictions from Météo France's ARPEGE atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM) downscaled to Marseilles meteorological station. NPP increased significantly for nine stands solely when the climatic effect was taken into account. The main factors responsible for this enhancement were increased winter and early spring temperatures. When the fertilising effect of the CO2 increase was added, NPP was significantly enhanced for 14 stands (i.e. NPP enhancement ranged from 8% to 55%). Although the effects of global change were slightly detectable during the 20th century, their acceleration is likely to lead to great changes in the future productivity of P. halepensis forests.  相似文献

A sediment layer (43 cm thick) and surface sediments (5 cm thick) in a submarine limestone cave (31 m water depth) on the fore-reef slope of Ie Island, off Okinawa mainland, Japan, were examined by visual, mineralogical and geochemical means. Oxygen isotope analysis was performed on the cavernicolous micro-bivalve Carditella iejimensis from both cored sediments and surface sediments, and the water temperature within the cave was recorded for nearly one year. These data show that: (1) water temperature within the cave is equal to that at 30 m deep in the open sea; (2) the biotic and non-biotic environments within the cave have persisted for the past 2000 years; (3) mud-size carbonate detritus is a major constituent of the submarine-cave deposit, and may have come mainly from the suspended carbonate mud produced on the emergent Holocene reef flat over the past two millennia; (4) the δ18O-derived temperature (Tδ18O) of C. iejimensis suggests that the species grows between April and July; (5) the Tδ18O of C. iejimensis from cored sediments implies that there were two warmer intervals, at AD 340 ± 40 and AD 1000 ± 40, which correspond to the Roman Warm Period and Medieval Warm Period, respectively. These suggest that submarine-cave sediments provide unique information for Holocene reef development. In addition, oxygen isotope records of cavernicolous C. iejimensis are a useful tool to reconstruct century-scale climatic variability for the Okinawa Islands during the Holocene.  相似文献

We have theoretically studied the influence of a far-infrared radiation (FIR) field from Hπ region on the cooling by C and O atoms, C+ ion and CO molecule in a photodissociation region, and a molecular cloud associated with Hπ region (hereinafter referred as HI region) at low temperatures (T k≤200 K). Comparisons have been made for cooling with and without FIR for two extreme abundances (10−4 and 10−7) of the mentioned species for temperatures ranging between 10 and 200K and an hydrogen particle density range 10 cm−3n o≤ 107 cm3. The cooling by the species with low line-splitting (CI, Cπ and CO) is significantly influenced by the radiation field for temperaturesT k < 100 K while the effect of radiation field on cooling by OI is significant even at higher temperatures (T k > 100 K). The effect of FIR field on the cooling of CO from low rotational transitions is negligibly small, whereas it is considerable for higher transitions. In general, the cooling terms related to the short-wavelength transitions are more affected by FIR than those related to longer wavelengths. It is also demonstrated here that in the determination of thermal structure of an HI region the dust grains play an important role in the heating of gas only through photoelectron emission following irradiation by far-ultraviolet (FUV) radiation, as the infrared radiation from the dust is too small to have substantial effect on the cooling. It is found that in the Hπ /HI interface the FIR field from grains in the Hπ region is not capable of modifying the temperature of the warmest regions but does so in the inner part where the temperature is low enough.  相似文献

Systematic and uniform sets of photometric and polarimetric observations of comet 1P/Halley have been analyzed. The phase dependence of brightness for comet Halley was obtained at phase angles α ranging from 1.4° ≤ α ≤ 65°. The following parameters were determined: the amplitude of the opposition effect Δm = 0.75m ± 0.06m; the half-width at a half-maximum of intensity HWHM = 6.4° ± 1.6°; the linear phase coefficient β = 0.0045 ± 0.0001 mag/deg for α from 30° ≤ α ≤ 65°; and the phase angle at which a nonlinear increase in brightness starts, α opp ≈ 31°. For the first time, the phase-angle dependence was obtained for the color of the dust of comet Halley: the color index BC-RC systematically decreases with increasing phase angle. Such a phase behavior of the dust color can be caused by the decrease in the mean size of dust particles that occurs when the comet approaches the Sun. For comet Halley, the negative polarization branch is almost symmetric; the minimal value of polarization is P min = −1.54% at a phase angle αmin = 10.5°, and the inversion angle is αinv = 21.7°. A comparative analysis of the phase functions of brightness and polarization has been performed for the cometary dust and atmosphereless bodies. Among the latter are low-albedo asteroids of the P and C types (102 Miriam and 47 Aglaja, respectively), as well as Deimos; high-albedo objects, such as the E-type asteroid 64 Angelina and the icy satellite of Jupiter Europa; and the Moon with its intermediate albedo. We present the results of observation of the Geminga pulsar carried out in the TeV energy band during the 6 year period spanning 2000–2006 using the Pachmarhi Array of Cherenkov Telescopes (PACT). A long stretch of data, new computer codes and the “Tempo” package have been used in the present analysis. We have searched for evidence of pulsed emission of γ-rays from the Geminga pulsar using the post-glitch pulsar elements obtained by Jackson and Halpern from X-ray/γ-ray satellite data. We do not see any significant evidence for pulsed emission from the Geminga pulsar at a threshold energy of 825 GeV. In this paper we present our results on the light curve in the TeV energy band, set an upper limit on the time averaged flux of γ-rays, and compare our results with other ground based observations.  相似文献

We present the first diffraction-limited K-band image of the Red Rectangle with 76 mas resolution, an H-band image with 75 mas resolution, and an RG 715 filter image ( 800 nm wavelength) with 78 mas resolution (corresponding to 25 AU for a distance of 330 pc). The H and K images were reconstructed from 6 m telescope speckle data and the RG 715 image from 2.2 m telescope data using the speckle masking bispectrum method. At all wavelengths the images show a compact, highly symmetric bipolar nebula, suggesting a toroidal density distribution of the circumstellar material. No direct light from the central binary can be seen as it is obscured by a dust disk or circumbinary torus. Our first high-resolution HK color image of the nebula shows a broad red plateau of HK≈ 2m in the bright inner regions.The optical and near-infrared images and the available photometric continuum observations in a wide range of ultraviolet to centimeter wavelengths enabled us to model the Red Rectangle in detail using a two-dimensional radiative transfer code. Our model matches both the high-resolution images and the spectral energy distribution of this object very well, making the following picture much more certain. The central close binary system with a total luminosity of 3000 L is embedded in a very dense, compact circumbinary torus which has an average number density nH ≈5×1012 cm−3, an outer radius of the dense inner region of R≈30 AU (91 mas), and a ρ∝r−2 density distribution. The full opening angle of the bipolar outflow cavities in our model is 70°. By comparing the observed and theoretical images, we derived an inclination angle of the torus to the line of sight of 7°±1°.The radiative transfer calculations show that the dust properties in the Red Rectangle are spatially inhomogeneous. The modeling confirms that the idea of large grains in the long-lived disk around the Red Rectangle (Jura et al., 1997 [ApJ, 474, 741]) is quantitatively consistent with the observations. In our models, unusually large, approximately millimeter-sized grains dominate the emission of the compact, massive torus. Models with smaller average grain sizes can possibly be found in future studies, for instance, if it turns out that the radio spectrum is not mainly caused by continuum dust emission. Therefore, the large grains suggested by our models require further confirmation by both new observations and radiative transfer calculations. Assuming a dust-to-gas ratio ρdg of 0.005, the dense torus mass is 0.25 M. The model gives a lower limit of 0.0018 M, for the mass of the large particles, which produce a gray extinction of A≈ 28m, towards the center. A much smaller mass of submicron-sized dust grains is presumably located in the polar outflow cavities, their conical surface layers, and in the outer low-density parts of the torus (where ρ∝r−4, in the region of 30 AUr 2000 AU corresponding to 0.′′09–6′′).  相似文献

Although several proxies have been proposed to trace the course of environmental and climatological fluctuations, precise paleoclimate records from the tropics, notably from Africa are still sorely lacking today. Stable carbon isotopes (δ13C) in tree rings are an attractive record of climate. In this study, the patterns and climatic signals of δ13C ratios were determined on tree rings of deciduous (Acacia senegal, Acacia tortilis, Acacia seyal) and an evergreen (Balanites aegyptiaca) species, from a semi-arid Acacia Woodland in Ethiopia. δ13C inter-annual patterns are synchronous among the co-occurring species. A declining trend with time was observed in δ13C, notably for B. aegyptiaca, which could be due to anthropogenic increases in atmospheric CO2 concentration and decrease in atmospheric δ13C. Tree ring δ13C values of all the species revealed significant negative correlation with precipitation amount but not with temperature and relative humidity. The δ13C series of the deciduous species shows a higher correlation (r = − 0.70 to − 0.78) with precipitation than the evergreen species (r = − 0.55). A master δ13C series, composed of the average of the three Acacia species, displayed stronger significant correlation (r = − 0.82) than any of the individual species δ13C series. The weak relationship between temperature and δ13C in this study indicates that photosynthetic rate is not a significant factor. Moisture stress, however, may have a direct impact on the stomatal conductance and explain the strong negative relationship between δ13C and precipitation. The results demonstrate the potential of δ13C in tree rings to reflect physiological responses to environmental changes as a vehicle for paleoclimatic reconstruction, which is important to understand tree response to past and future climate change.  相似文献

H3+ emission from Uranus has been observed repeatedly for over a decade. However, the details of the emission mechanisms are still poorly understood. In this paper, we discuss our findings from the observations we made in September 2000 and September 2001. The spectrum of Uranus was recorded at the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility using the SpeX instrument between 3 and 5 μm, with a resolving power of 1000. The 3.4–4.1 μm range permits a determination of both the H3+ column density and its rotational temperature. The H3+ emission, measured at 3.986 μm in the 0.8×3.7 arcsec aperture, was 0.031 Jy in September 2000 and 0.053 Jy in September 2001. The rotational temperature was found to be 560±40 K and 640±40 K in 2000 and 2001 respectively, with corresponding column densities of 5.1 (+3.2,−1.4) 1011 and 4.0 (+1.8,−1.0) 1011 cm−2. These results extend the baseline for the variability study of the H3+ emission (Astrophys. J. 524 (1999) 1059). Previous observations between 1992 and 1998 seemed to indicate a correlation between the H3+ intensity and the solar cycle. The current data for 2000 and 2001 appear to be consistent with this general tendency.  相似文献

From the volume-limited Main galaxy sample of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 6 (SDSS DR6), we construct three samples with g–r color bins , labeled S1–S3, to investigate how other properties of galaxies depend on environment at fixed color. For each sample, we measure the local three-dimensional galaxy density in a comoving sphere with radius equal to the distance to the 5th nearest galaxy for each galaxy, select about 5% galaxies and construct the two subsamples at both extremes of density. Our study suggests that the environmental dependence of luminosity is mainly due to the environmental dependence of galaxy color and the correlation between color and luminosity. In addition, we preferentially conclude that concentration index and morphologies are not strongly correlated with local density at fixed color, and that galaxy color is a galaxy property very predictive of the local environment. Because SDSS spectroscopy is incomplete for bright galaxies at very low redshifts, we also use a volume-limited Main galaxy sample with a lower redshift limit z = 0.05, which contains 94,954 galaxies at 0.05 < z < 0.089 with −22.40 < Mr < −20.16, and reach the same conclusions.Due to the bimodality of the u–r color distribution, we classify galaxies as ‘red’ and ‘blue’, respectively, and further subdivide the samples into star-forming galaxies and passive ones using Hα equivalent width, W0(Hα). Results show that color and star formation activity of galaxies are galaxy properties very predictive of the local environment.  相似文献

This paper reports results from an experiment designed to measure the nascent rovibrational population of H2 molecules that have formed through the heterogeneous recombination of H atoms on the surface of cosmic dust analogues under conditions approaching those of the interstellar medium (ISM). H2 that has formed on a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) surface has been detected, using laser induced resonance-enhanced multi-photon ionization (REMPI), in the v = 1 (J= 0–3) rovibrational states at surface temperatures of 30 K and 50 K. These excited product molecules display rotational temperatures significantly higher than the target surface temperature. These first results suggest that a considerable proportion of the binding energy released on formation of the H2 is deposited in the surface, in addition to internal excitation of the product molecules. We have shown that the phenomenological models with a cosmological constant of the type Λ=β( ) and Λ=3αH 2, where R is the scale factor of the universe and H is the Hubble constant, are equivalent to a quintessence model with a scalar (φ) potential of the formV∝φ-n, n= constant. The equation of state of the cosmic fluid is described by these parameters (α, β, n) only. The equation of state of the cosmic fluid (dark energy) can be determined by any of these parameters. The actual amount of dark energy will define the equation of state of the cosmic fluid.All of the three forms can give rise to cosmic acceleration depending the amount of dark energy in the universe.  相似文献

We measured the δ18O values of the whole shells of the cavernicolous micro-bivalvia Carditella iejimensis obtained from sediments within a submarine cave (31 m water depth) at Ie Island (Okinawa Island, Japan) in the subtropical Northwest Pacific. Our results show no significant millennial-scale trend in the δ18O record, implying that both springtime temperature and the δ18O of sea water at 30 m depth around the Okinawa Islands have been stable for the past 3000 years at values similar to those of today. Moreover, we found one exceptionally light δ18O value from specimens spanning the past 250 years. The δ18O-derived temperature represents a departure of 2.1 °C from the average value for the past 250 years, being equal to the departure recorded during unusually high temperatures in the spring of 1998. This finding may imply that such high springtime sea surface temperature has been a rare event over the past 3000 years.  相似文献

Photometric observation of HR 1099 inV andB obtained on 18 nights between January and March 1977 is presented. The amplitude of the asymmetric light curve is found to be 0m.10±0m.004 both inV andB. On three occasions—namely, JD 2443164. 17, JD 2443176. 14 and JD 2443177.12—the star brightened by 0m.05. Four H spectrograms at 42 Å mm–1 dispersion were obtained during October–November 1978. The profile and equivalent width of H of 14 November, 1978 suggest a probable major outburst.Analysis of all available photometry shows that (1) the amplitude and shape of the light curve change in a few orbital periods, (2) the phase of the minimum light migrated towards decreasing orbital phase during the interval JD 2442720 to JD 2443000 and from JD 2443200, there is almost a linear increase of the phase of the minimum light and (3) the phase of the light minimum sometimes shows to and fro behaviour suggesting the migration of the wave is not taking place smoothly.  相似文献
