Wave speeds and attenuation of elastic waves in material containing cracks   总被引:38,自引:0,他引:38
Summary. Expressions now exist from which may be calculated the propagation constants of elastic waves travelling through material containing a distribution of cracks. The cracks are randomly distributed in position and may be randomly orientated. The wavelengths involved are assumed to be large compared with the size of the cracks and with their separation distances so that the formulae, based on the mean taken over a statistical ensemble, may reasonably be used to predict the properties of a single sample. The results are valid only for small concentrations of cracks.
Explicit expressions, correct to lowest order in the ratio of the crack size to a wavelength, are derived here for the overall elastic parameters and the overall wave speeds and attenuation of elastic waves in cracked materials where the mean crack is circular, and the cracks are either aligned or randomly orientated. The cracks may be empty or filled with solid or fluid material. These results are achieved on the basis of simply the static solution for an ellipsoidal inclusion under stress.
The extension to different distributions of orientation or to mixtures of different types of crack is quite straightforward.  相似文献

Gravity anomalies and flexure of the lithosphere at Ascension Island   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Ascension Island, in the northern South Atlantic, forms the summit of a volcanic edifice 60 km in diameter which places a substantial load on the underlying young oceanic lithosphere. An analysis of a combined data set of recent and historical surface-gravity and bathymetry measurements on and around the island suggests that the lithosphere responds to this load by flexure equivalent to that of an elastic plate only ≈ 3 km thick, and that the mean density of the volcanic edifice is ≈ 2500 kg m-3. A steep gravity gradient across the island cannot be explained by a simple flexural model and must be attributed to lateral density variations within the volcano itself. The effective elastic thickness is considerably less than the expected ≈ 12 km mechanical thickness of the ≈ 6 Ma lithosphere loaded by the volcano, and less even than zero-age elastic thicknesses commonly observed at slow-spreading ridges with axial rift valleys. The unusually small elastic thickness may be attributed to the combined effects of the high curvature beneath the island, which produces bending stresses that are limited by the yield stress envelope, localized heating of the lithosphere during emplacement of the island, and crustal thickening. When these factors are taken into account, the observed flexure is consistent with rheological models based on experimental rock mechanics.  相似文献

Borehole logs often show considerable variation over small lengths, consistent with fine layering of the formation. Elastic upscaling allows layering on a fine length scale to be replaced by thicker, homogeneous equivalent transversely isotropic layers, thus creating a model with far fewer layers. In this paper, the effect of inclusions of finite lateral extent on elastic upscaling is examined. For inclusions with a small thickness to width ratio, Backus averaging gives a good approximation to the long-wavelength elastic properties of the medium. However, for larger thickness to width ratios, the anisotropy of the medium can be significantly reduced. For inclusions that are long in comparison to their width, azimuthal anisotropy may result if the inclusions show a preferential orientation. This could result from the presence of flow during deposition. The azimuthal anisotropy increases with increasing thickness to width ratio of the inclusions, and vanishes when this ratio is zero. For larger thickness to width ratios, the magnitude of the azimuthal anisotropy may be of similar magnitude to that commonly seen in sedimentary basins. Azimuthal anisotropy is usually attributed to the presence of aligned fractures within the formation. The present results suggest a further source of azimuthal anisotropy that may be significant.  相似文献

Freezing and thawing during the winter season change soil properties such as density. The density change in the particulate media influences soil stiffness. In addition, freezing of partially or fully saturated soils changes the soil matrix from a particulate media to a continuum. The goal of this study is to investigate the cyclic freezing and thawing effects on elastic waves. Sand-silt mixtures with 10% silt fraction in weight and 40% saturation are prepared. The sand-silt mixtures are placed in a nylon cell, onto which a pair of bender elements and a pair of piezoelectric disk elements are installed for the measurement of shear and compressional waves, respectively. The temperature of the mixtures decreases from 20°C to 10°C to freezing. The frozen sample is gradually thawed at room temperature (20°C). These freezing-thawing processes are repeated three times. The test result shows that the shear and compressional wave velocities significantly increase when the specimen is frozen. When the temperature is greater than 0°C, the elastic wave velocities are lower during thawing than during freezing due to soil structure change. This study demonstrates that soil structure change during the winter season may be effectively estimated from elastic waves.  相似文献

Ray tracing has recently been expressed for anisotropy specified in a local Cartesian coordinate system, which may vary continuously in a model specified by elastic parameters. It takes advantage of the fact that anisotropy is often of a simpler nature locally (and is thus specified by a smaller number of elastic parameters) and that the orientation of its symmetry elements may vary. Here we extend this approach by replacing the local Cartesian coordinate system with a curvilinear coordinate system of global extent and by applying the new approach to ray tracing and inhomogeneous dynamic ray tracing. The curvilinear coordinate system is orthogonal and is constructed so that the coordinate axes are consistent with the considered anisotropy of the medium. Our formulation allows for computation of ray attributes (e.g. ray velocity vector and paraxial ray attributes) in the curvilinear coordinate system, while rays are computed in global Cartesian coordinates. Compared to the classic formulation in terms of 21 elastic moduli in global Cartesian coordinates, the main advantages are improved efficiency, lower computer-memory requirements, and conservation of anisotropic symmetry throughout the model.  相似文献

Summary. The response of a stratified elastic medium can be conveniently characterized by the Green's tensor for the medium. For coupled seismic wave propagation ( P—SV or fully anisotropic), the Green's tensor may be constructed directly from two matrices of linearly independent displacement solutions. Rather simple forms for the Green's tensor can be found if each displacement matrix satisfies one of the boundary conditions on the seismic field. This approach relates directly to 'reflection matrix' representations of the seismic field.
For a stratified elastic half space the Green's tensor is used to give a spectral representation for coupled seismic waves. By means of a contour integration a general completeness relation is obtained for the 'body wave' and 'surface wave' parts of the seismic field. This relation is appropriate for SH and P–SV waves in an isotropic medium and also for full anisotropy.  相似文献

Seismic waves in a stratified half space   总被引:22,自引:0,他引:22
Summary. The response of a stratified elastic half space to a general source may be represented in terms of the reflection and transmission properties of the regions above and below the source. For P-SV and SH waves and both buried sources and receivers, convenient forms of the response may be found in which no loss of precision problems arise from growing exponential terms in the evanescent regime. These expressions have a ready physical interpretation and enable useful approximations to the response to be developed. The reflection representation leads to efficient computational procedures for models composed of uniform layers, which may be extended in an asymptotic development to piecewise smooth models.

Summary. Asymptotic ray theory is applied to surface waves in a medium where the lateral variations of structure are very smooth. Using ray-centred coordinates, parabolic equations are obtained for lateral variations while vertical structural variations at a given point are specified by eigenfunctions of normal mode theory as for the laterally homogeneous case. Final results on wavefields close to a ray can be expressed by formulations similar to those for elastic body waves in 2-D laterally heterogeneous media, except that the vertical dependence is described by eigenfunctions of 'local' Love or Rayleigh waves. The transport equation is written in terms of geometrical-ray spreading, group velocity and an energy integral. For the horizontal components there are both principal and additional components to describe the curvature of rays along the surface, as in the case of elastic body waves. The vertical component is decoupled from the horizontal components. With complex parameters the solutions for the dynamic ray tracing system correspond to Gaussian beams: the amplitude distribution is bell-shaped along the direction perpendicular to the ray and the solution is regular everywhere, even at caustics. Most of the characteristics of Gaussian beams for 2-D elastic body waves are also applicable to the surface wave case. At each frequency the solution may be regarded as a set of eigenfunctions propagating over a 2-D surface according to the phase velocity mapping.  相似文献

Seismic tomography has been one of the primary tools to image the interior of the earth and other elastic structures. To date the inversions of compressional ( P ) and shear ( S ) wave speeds have been carried out separately under the assumption that P traveltimes are affected only by the P wave speed of the elastic media and S traveltimes by the S wave speed. Using numerical and analytical solutions, we show that for finite-frequency seismic waves, S wave speed perturbations may have significant effects on P waveforms. This suggests that when waveform-derived traveltime and amplitude anomalies are used in tomographic inversions, the P -wave measurements should be related to not only P wave speed perturbations but also S wave speed perturbations.  相似文献

Summary. We develop a méthod of reconstructing the elastic paraméters as functions of depth, for a horizontally stratified, isotropic elastic half-space. Unlike previous schemes, which have been able to retrieve the shear wave speed and density from SH seismograms slant stacked at two angles, our méthod makes use of P - SV data at a single stacking paraméter to obtain all three elastic constants. The data required are the elements of the full reflection matrix at the surface, corresponding to measurements of two separate components of the response to two independent sources, one explosive, the other generating shear waves.
In developing this inverse scheme fundamental differences emerge between the acoustic or SH problem, and the coupled P - SV case, the most important being in the nature of the interfacial scattering matrix. We show that it is not possible to make use of the downward reflection data for an interface to determine directly the remaining reflection and transmission coefficients, but that the scattering data may be completed by applying a simple iterative procedure at each interface.
We show the result of applying our inverse scheme to seismograms generated for a six-layered model, including a low-velocity layer. We are able to reconstruct both wave speeds and the density as functions of depth, all quantities being in close agreement with the original model.  相似文献

The vibration of a fluid-filled crack is considered to be one of the most plausible source mechanisms for the long-period events and volcanic tremors occurring around volcanoes. As a tool for the quantitative interpretation of source process of such volcanic seismic signals, we propose a method to numerically simulate the dynamic response of a fluid-filled crack. In this method, we formulate the motions of the fluid inside and the elastic solid outside of the crack, using boundary integrals in the frequency domain and solve the dynamic interactions between the fluid and the elastic solid using the point collocation method. The present method is more efficient compared with the time-domain finite difference method, which has been used in simulations of a fluid-filled crack and enables us to study the dynamics of a fluid-filled crack over a wide range of physical parameters. The method also allows us direct calculation of the attenuation quality factor of the crack resonance, which is an indispensable parameter for estimating the properties of the fluid inside the crack. The method is also designed to be flexible to many applications, which may be encountered in volcano seismology, and thus, extensions of the method to more complicated problems are promising.  相似文献

Elastic scattered waves from a continuous and heterogeneous layer   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Elastic scattering from a continuous and laterally unbounded heterogeneous layer has been formulated using the Born approximation. A general solution of the scattered wave equation for the above-stated medium has been given in terms of a Fourier integral over plane waves. Far-field asymptotic expressions for weak elastic scattering by a finite, continuous and inhomogeneous layer have been presented which agree with earlier results. For perturbations of the two elastic parameters and the density having the same form of spatial variation, the spectrum of plane waves scattered from a heterogeneous layer is expressed as a product of an 'elastic scattering factor'and a 'distribution factor'. As in earlier results for small-scale heterogeneity, the scattering pattern depends on various combinations of perturbations of elastic parameters and density. In order to show the general characteristics of the elastic wave scattering, some scattering patterns have been given.  相似文献

Non-linear elastic behaviour of damaged rocks   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The pervasive damage of rocks by microcracks and voids strongly affects their macroscopic elastic properties. To evaluate the damage effects, we derive here the macroscopic stress-strain relations for a 3-D elastic solid with non-interacting cracks embedded inside a homogeneous matrix. The cracks considered are oriented either perpendicular to the maximum tension axis, or perpendicular to the maximum compression axis. In the first case they dilate during loading and in the second case they contract during loading. We derive a solution for the elastic energy of this rock following the self-consistent scheme of Budiansky & O'Connell (1976). The solution describes the stress-strain relations in terms of Λd and μd, which are the modified Lame constants, and an additional parameter Λ. The latter accounts for the non-linear behaviour of the solid and is related to crack density. The solution predicts a non-linear elastic rheology even for an infinitesimal strain of ɛ < 0.001, and abrupt change in the elastic moduli when the loading reverses from uniaxial compression to uniaxial tension.
We use the derived solution to analyse rock-mechanics experiments in which beams of Indiana limestone were deformed under four-point loading. This configuration provides simultaneously the apparent tensile and compressive moduli for small strains. The apparent moduli fit the effective elastic moduli calculated with the present damage model well, including the differences between tensile and compressive moduli.  相似文献

Identification of symmetry planes in weakly anisotropic elastic media   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A procedure is proposed to obtain symmetry properties of weakly anisotropic (WA) elastic media by giving 15 WA parameters of qP wave in an arbitrary Cartesian coordinate system. The 15 WA parameters, which linearly depend on 21 elastic elements, form a complete set to determine the symmetry planes in WA materials. The procedure is based on the eigenvalue problems of two matrices. One of the matrices consists of the Voigt and dilatational matrices, and the other is an acoustic tensor defined by an irreducible, completely symmetric and traceless, fourth-rank tensor resulting from decomposition of the fourth-rank elastic tensor. If the eigenvectors are taken as the axes of a new coordinate system (called symmetry Cartesian coordinate system), the transformation of WA parameters from an arbitrary Cartesian coordinate system to a symmetry Cartesian coordinate system can reduce the number of distinct WA parameters of elastic materials except in triclinic medium.  相似文献

Summary. Theoretical developments of Hudson demonstrate how to calculate the variations of velocity and attenuation of seismic waves propagating through solids containing aligned cracks. The analysis can handle a wide variety of crack configurations and crack geometries. Hudson associates the velocity variations with effective elastic constants. In this paper we associate the variation of attenuation with the imaginary parts of complex effective elastic constants. These complex elastic constants permit the simulation of wave propagation through two-phase materials by the calculation of wave propagation through homogeneous anisotropic solids.  相似文献

Summary Isotropic earth models are unable to provide uniform fits to the gross Earth normal mode data set or, in many cases, to regional Love-and Rayleigh-wave data. Anisotropic inversion provides a good fit to the data and indicates that the upper 200km of the mantle is anisotropic. The nature and magnitude of the required anisotropy, moreover, is similar to that found in body wave studies and in studies of ultramafic samples from the upper mantle. Pronounced upper mantle low-velocity zones are characteristic of models resulting from isotropic inversion of global or regional data sets. Anisotropic models have more nearly constant velocities in the upper mantle.
Normal mode partial (Frediét) derivatives are calculated for a transversely isotropic earth model with a radial axis of symmetry. For this type of anisotropy there are five elastic constant. The two shear-type moduli can be determined from the toroidal modes. Spheroidal and Rayleigh modes are sensitive to all five elastic constants but are mainly controlled by the two compressional-type moduli, one of the shear-type moduli and the remaining, mixed-mode, modulus. The lack of sensitivity of Rayleigh waves to compressional wave velocities is a characteristic only of the isotropic case. The partial derivatives of the horizontal and vertical components of the compressional velocity are nearly equal and opposite in the region of the mantle where the shear velocity sensitivity is the greatest. The net compressional wave partial derivative, at depth, is therefore very small for isotropic perturbations. Compressional wave anisotropy, however, has a significant effect on Rayleigh-wave dispersion. Once it has been established that transverse anisotropy is important it is necessary to invert for all five elastic constants. If the azimuthal effect has not been averaged out a more general anisotropy may have to be allowed for.  相似文献

Out of the four waves in an anisotropic poroelastic medium, two are termed as quasi-transverse waves. The prefix 'quasi' refers to their polarizations being nearly, but not exactly, perpendicular to direction of propagation. In this composite medium, unlike perfectly elastic medium, the propagation of a longitudinal wave along a phase direction may not be accompanied by transverse waves. The existence of a transverse wave in anisotropic poroelastic media is ensured by the two equations restricting the choice of elastic coefficients of porous aggregate as well as fluid–solid coupling. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of transverse waves along the coordinate axes and in the coordinate planes for general anisotropy are discussed. The discussion is extended to the case of orthotropic materials and existence for few specific phase directions is also explored. The conditions for the transverse waves decided on the basis of their apparent polarizations, that is, particle motion being perpendicular to ray direction, are also discussed. For a particular numerical model, the existence of these apparent transverse waves is solved numerically for phase directions in coordinate planes. For general directions of phase propagation, the existence of these transverse waves is checked graphically for the chosen numerical model.  相似文献

Summary. We show that Maslov's extension of the WKBJ method allows an extension of the dynamic ray tracing to wavefields involving caustics of arbitrary form. If the receiver lies off the caustics, then the synthetic seismogram can be obtained by integrating the DRT system along a single ray joining the receiver to the source which may touch caustics. If the receiver-lies in the vicinity of a caustic then DRT has to be carried out along a bunch of rays covering a neighbourhood of the receiver. Our approach encompasses pre-stressed and/or anisotropic media. Initial boundary conditions for a point source embedded in an anisotropic elastic medium are also presented.  相似文献

Summary. A representation derived by Richards (1974) for P-SV wave displacements in spherically symmetric elastic media is extended to general displacements in a general inhomogeneous isotropic elastic medium, with suitably differentiable elastic constants. This representation in terms of appropriate potentials gives rise to a partial decoupling of the P and S (weighted) displacements, which satisfy simple second order wave equations with lower order coupling terms. The highest order P and S components satisfy homogeneous wave equations that depend only on the P and S velocities α and β respectively and are unaffected by the density other than at the source and observer positions.  相似文献
