A methodology for the isolation ofRuppia maritima L. into algal-free laboratory culture is described. Seeds were surface sterilized with 96% ethyl alcohol of pH 2, kept for several months in cold storage at 7°C, and subsequently transferred to 25°C to induce germination. Basic culture conditions are discussed and a vessel of easy maintenance and sterilization forRuppia culture in ground glass sediments is presented. Minor modifications of this methodology might permit contaminant-free laboratory cultures of other estuarine and marine spermatophytes.  相似文献

The ecotoxicological effects of Cr2+ on germination and early seedling growth of six pulses were investigated. Seeds of these plants were exposed to seven different concentrations of Cr (0–3.2 mM). The results indicated that root elongation and coleoptile growth of six pulse plants were more sensitive than seed germination for measurement of the toxic of Cr2+ pollutions. Different species show different levels of tolerance to Cr2+ pollution. Lablab purpureus and Glycine max are the most sensitive to Cr2+, their germination percentage, root and coleoptile length were significantly lower than other tested species, by contrast, Lathyrus odoratus and Dumasia villosa are the most resist species, their germination and seedling growth almost were not influenced by Cr2+ pollution significantly comparing the control. There were significantly negatively correlations between seedling growth and increasing concentration of Cr2+ for Glycine max, Vigna radiate and Lablab purpureus. The significantly negative correlations between germination and increasing concentration of Cr2+ were shown for Glycine max, Vigna radiate and V angularis.  相似文献

Forty-eight core and grab samples were taken from two impoundments and an adjacent tidal creek and salt marsh during each of six sampling periods (January, June and November 1983; and January, April and July 1984). Habitats sampled within the impoundments included the perimeter ditch and shallow vegeted areas dominated byRuppia maritima, Spartina alterniflora, andScirpus robustus. The adjacent tidal creek bottom and low marsh ofS. alterniflora were sampled for comparison with the impoundment sites. Major differences in faunal composition and density of macrobenthic invertebrates were observed between habitats in this study. Macrobenthic density was highest (475 individuals 0.05 m?2) at the impoundment site dominated byScripus robustus, where oligochaetes were abundant. The open marsh site had a density of 254 individuals 0.05 m?2. Among unvegetated sites, density for all sampling periods was higher in Chainey Creek than in the perimeter ditches of the impoundments. The total number of taxa was highest for the open marsh and tidal creek sites. The impoundments contained vegetated sites which were inhabited by fewer species than nonimpounded sites, while the perimeter ditch sites were comparatively depauperate. Cluster and nodal analyses identified four broad assemblages based on habitat: 1) an open marsh assemblage, 2) a creek assemblage, 3) a eurytopic assemblage, and 4) an impoundment assemblage. The separation of faunal assemblages by sampling site rather than sampling period suggests that physical differences between habitats were important factors determining distribution patterns.  相似文献

The coastal marshlands of the Nueces estuary, Texas depend upon periodic freshwater inundation to support current community structure and promote further establishment and expansion of emergent halophytes. Decades of watershed modifications have dramatically decreased freshwater discharge into the upper estuary resulting in hypersaline and dry conditions. In an attempt to partially restore inflow, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation excavated two overflow channels re-connecting the Nueces River to the marshlands. Freshwater-mediated (precipitation and inflow) changes in tidal creek and porewater salinity and emergent marsh vegetation were examined over a 5-yr period at three stations in the upper Nueces Marsh with the aid of a Geographical Information System (GIS). Two stations were potentially subjected to freshwater inflow through the channels, while one station experienced only precipitation. Decreased tidal creek and porewater salinity were significantly correlated with increased freshwater at all stations (R2=0.37 to 0.56), although porewater salinities remained hypersaline. GIS analyses indicated the most considerable vegetation change following freshwater inundation was increased cover of the annual succulentSalicornia bigelovii. Fall inundation allowed seed germination and rapid expansion of this species into previously bare areas during the subsequent winter and following spring. The station affected by both inflow and precipitation exhibited greaterS. bigelovii cover than the station affected solely by precipitation in both spring 1999 (58. 7% compared to 27.9%) and 2000 (48.6% compared to 1.9%). Percent cover of the perennialBatis maritima temporarily increased after periods of consistent rainfall. The response was short term, and cover quickly returned to pre-inundation conditions within 3 mo. Prolonged inundation led to longterm (>2yr) decreases in percent cover ofB. maritima. Our results suggest that the timing and quantity of freshwater inundation strongly dictate halophyte response to precipitation and inflow. Brief periods of freshwater inundation that occur at specific times of year alleviate stress and promote seed germination and growth, but extended soil saturation can act as a disturbance that has a negative impact on species adapted to hypersaline conditions.  相似文献

The dominant plant in Humboldt Bay salt marshes in Spartina densiflora, a species of cordgrass apparently introduced from South America. At several salt marshes and restoration sites around Humboldt Bay, distribution of this plant has increased significantly. We investigated the relative contributions of vegetative tiller production and seed germination to the establishment and expansion of S. densiflora. Lateral spread of plants surrounded by competitors were compared to areas without competing plant species. Plants growing in areas without competitors had significantly higher rates of vegetative expansion (p<0.0001). Viable seed production, germination rates, seedling survivorship, and growth of adult plants were measured in six salinity treatments. Approximately 1,977±80 viable seeds are produced per plant (0.25–0.5 m2). The number of germinating seeds was inversely related to increases in salinity. Salinity treatments between 19‰ and 35‰ produced significantly lower germination rates than salinities of 0–18‰ (p<0.0001). Seedling survivorship was 50% at ≤4‰ and 8–14% at ≥11‰. Lateral expansion of adult, greenhouse-grown plants occurred in all salinity treatments, with modest decreases in the highest salinity treatments (p<0.05). Our findings indicate that S. densiflora expands primarily by vegetative expansion, and lateral tillers are produced by throughout the year. Spartina densiflora produces prolific amounts of seed, but recruitment in mature salt marshes may be limited by competitors and higher salinities. At restoration sites, planting of native species such as Salicornia virginica, Distichlis spicata, or Jaumea carnosa may prevent monospecific stands of S. densiflora from developing.  相似文献

Sophora moorcroftiana, an endemic leguminous shrub in Tibet, is found in valleys, slopes, terraces from 3,000 to 3,900 m above sea level along the middle reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River. S. moorcroftiana is more tolerant of sand burial than other species in the valleys and is regarded as an ideal species for studying acclimatization to climatic factors. Stem basal diameter showed decline as altitude increased from 3,039 to 3,928 m in the Yarlung Zangbo River valley. Population density increased with the rise of altitude. However, seed bank density, seed germination and seed weight of S. moorcroftiana did not change with changing elevation. Plants responded to altitude variances with remarkable sensitivities. Stem basal diameter size declined along the vertical gradient between plateau and mountainside. Both in alpine and plateau areas, plants similarly adapted growth to altitude, but displayed different responses with respect to reproductive parameters, such as seed bank density, dry weight of seed, seed germination, seedling density and sapling density. Sand accretion remarkably reduced seed bank density and seedling density of the total population of S. moorcroftiana, but could promote shoot sprouting and shoot growing on the individual scale that stimulated the overall development of the population. The results suggested that this particular foredune species did not merely tolerate sand burial, but actually responded positively to sand accumulation.  相似文献

The evaluation of nonconventional water resources on seed germination and seedling growth performance at early growth stages is still in progress, especially on multipurpose forest trees. This study was designed to test the effect of four water qualities [treated wastewater, industrial, gray and distilled water (control)] on germination and early seedling vigor of Leucaena leucocephala. The results showed that germination was not significantly affected by different water qualities. Seed germination reached a maximum after 17, 14, 14 and 21?days under gray, industrial, treated wastewater and control irrigation, respectively. The highest mean of shoot length was scored under gray water irrigation. Likewise, the highest mean of root length was scored under control, which was not significant from gray water. The means of shoot fresh and dry weight were the highest under treated wastewater. The means of root fresh weight and root dry weight were not significantly different under water treatments. The shoot/root ratios under all water qualities treatments were significantly higher than the control. Growth performance was in progress with no mortality during 21?days of growth. The best nonconventional water quality alternatives based on cleanness, nutrients and toxicity are the gray, treated wastewater and industrial water, respectively.  相似文献

The influences of temperature and environmental hypoxia on the growth rates of two California anadromous fishes, white sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus) and striped bass (Morone saxatilis) were examined. Fish (0.5–0.6 g initial weight) were fedad libitum rations ofArtemia in flow-through aquaria regulated for temperature (15, 20, and 25°C) and oxygen tension (130 and 90 torr Po 2). Growth of sturgeon was significantly greater at 20 °C compared with 15 °C, but there was no difference between 20 and 25 °C. Striped bass growth increased with each 5° increment of temeprature elevation to 3.2% body weight per d at 25 °C, the fastest growth rate measured. The temperature of maximum growth reflected the temperature of the native estuarine rearing area. Environmental hypoxia (90 torr Po 2) reduced growth of sturgeon within each temperature level, whereas striped bass growth was reduced by hypoxia only at the upper two temperatures. Sturgeon were much more active in the growth chambers than striped bass. Sturgeon activity increased with each 5 °C temperature increase under normoxia and hypoxia, except at 25 °C (hypoxia) where activity was insignificantly different from that at 20 °C (hypoxia).  相似文献

Predation byPanopeus herbstii onMercenaria mercenaria was significantly affected by temperature, and the size of predators and prey items. LargerP. herbstii opened more clams and preyed more successfully on larger clams than did smaller crabs. Increase in seed clam size and decrease in water temperature significantly reduced predation. Clam size appeared to be more important than crab satiation in reducing predation rate. Planting larger seed clams in cooler months should help to improve clam survival by reducing the impact ofP. herbstii in culture operations.  相似文献

Spartina alterniflora was first introduced into south San Francisco Bay in the 1970’s. Since that time it has spread to new areas within the south bay and is especially well established at four sites. The spread of this introduced species was evaluated by comparing its vegetative and reproductive characteristics to the native cordgrass, Spartina foliosa. The characters studied were intertidal distribution, phenology, aboveground and belowground biomass, growth rates, seed production, and germination rates. Spartina alterniflora has a wider intertidal distribution than S. foliosa and outproduced the native cordgrass in all aspects that were studied. These results indicate that the introduced species has a much better chance of becoming established in new areas than the native species, and once established, it spreads more rapidly vegetatively than the native species. Spartina alterniflora is likely to continue to spread to new areas in the bay and displace the native plant. Moringa oleifera seed was used as a biosorbent for the removal of water treatment disinfection by-products, haloethers, trihalomethanes and haloketones from water samples. M. oleifera seed has polar functional groups such as O–H, C=O, C–N and others which facilitate the extraction of these disinfection by-products. Experiments were conducted in batch and fixed bed column modes. Using batch mode, different parameters were optimized such as M. oleifera seed dosage, sample pH, contact time and agitation speed. The effect of the thickness layer and flow rate were also studied using the fixed bed mode. Maximum adsorption occurs using the batch mode with removal efficiencies of 120.5, 114 and 111.5 mg/g for haloethers, trihalomethanes and haloketones, respectively. Adsorption equilibrium followed Langmuir model, and the kinetic data obeyed the pseudo-second-order model, revealing that the M. oleifera seed had higher adsorption capacity than other reported sorbents. Shorter removal time with higher adsorption capacity of disinfection by-products by M. oleifera seed suggests that this material was effective for water treatment, in dealing with the removal of the disinfection by-products considered.  相似文献

Diel vertical migration (DVM) and seasonal timing of three sympatricCancer spp. larvae were investigated in southeastern Alaska. Diel sampling was conducted at a station in Icy Strait at 0400, 0700, 1000, 1300 h in the first day, and 1300, 1600, 1900, and 2200 h in the second day from June to September 2001. Larvae were collected with Bongo nets (333 and 505 μm mesh) towed vertically from 20 m depth to the surface. During flood tides surface temperature increased slightly and salinity decreased; the reverse occurred during ebb tides. Zooplankton biomasses were higher in the early morning and evening than during the midday. A total of 4,482 larvae were examined for the study.Cancer oregonensis larvae were most abundant (4,238), followed byC. magister (205) andC. productus (39). Larval density peaked in June while no larvae were found in September.C. magister larvae had a crepuscular migration; larval abundance peaked in early morning and evening.C. oregonensis larvae comprised 94.6% of allCancer spp. larvae collected and had a strong DVM in June. Earlier zoeal stages ofC. oregonensis were relatively more abundant during midday, while later stages were more abundant at night. In July, later larval stages ofC. oregonensis were distributed at the surface all day with a peak at 2200 h. Larvae ofC. productus first occurred in July and peaked in August.C. productus had DVM but many were at the surface diurnally.C. magister andC. oregonensis larvae co-occurred seasonally as they do in the lower latitudes, e.g., Washington and British Columbia; however,C. productus appeared approximately 2 mo later thanC. magister andC. oregonensis in southeastern Alaska.  相似文献

Contamination of soil with heavy metals is one of the important concerns of public health and food production. Nickel is a heavy metal whose toxic properties have been confirmed. In some plants, nickel has also been known as a useful metal for their growth. In this research, the response of two chamomile species to different levels of nickel was investigated in two stages of germination and callogenesis in vitro conditions in factorial experiment based on completely randomized design. In the first experiment, the effect of different concentrations of nickel sulfate (0, 60, 120, and 180 µM) was examined on germination of German (Matricaria chamomilla) and Aurea (M. aurea) chamomile seeds in the MS culture medium. The results indicated that at high levels of nickel sulfate, the speed and percentage of germination increased in both types of chamomile. In M. chamomilla, with the increase in the concentration of nickel sulfate, the length of the seedling decreased, but the seed weight vigor, length of the radicle, and dry weight of the seedling increased. M. aurea showed elevation in most indices. The results of the second experiment indicated that the M. chamomilla leaf explants had callogenesis and its callogenesis indices showed a significant decrease at high levels of nickel, when compared with the control In M. aurea, the calluses did not grow sufficiently, suggesting the sensitivity of M. aurea’s callogenesis to the presence of different levels of nickel. In conclusion, chamomile appears to be tolerant to nickel stress.  相似文献

A single stem section (pluricolumnal) belonging to a post-Palaeozoic crinoid (sea lily) is reported from a small outcrop of Lower Jurassic Lias Group strata exposed in low cliff near Dunrobin Castle. This is the first Jurassic crinoid recorded from Eastern Scotland and the small fragment has enough diagnostic characters to be assigned to the species Isocrinus cf. robustus; a crinoid found commonly in the Lower Jurassic of England. The Scottish form collected has unusual morphology that is atypical of the genus.  相似文献

Secondary treated sewage was chlorinated to a residual level of 2–10 mg/l in a continuous flow system in the laboratory and diluted to various levels with estuarine water. A portion of the chlorinated sewage effluent was dechlorinated with sodium thiosulfate and the dechlorinated waste was diluted with estuarine water in the same proportions as the chlorinated waste.Menidia menidia, Palaemonetes pugio andCrassostrea virginica were exposed to chlorinated and dechlorinated treatments. High concentrations of chlorinated effluent caused mortalities inM. menidia andP. pugio, whereas similar concentrations of dechlorinated wastes did not cause mortalities. Mortalities in the chlorinated waste are correlated with chlorine residuals. Similarly, the chlorinated wastes depressed the shell deposition rate ofC. virginica below 50% of controls at all doses. Dechlorinated waste allowed shell deposition greater than 50% of controls. However, the occurrence of some growth inhibition inC. virginica exposed to dechlorinated waste suggests the presence of toxic material in the waste other than chlorine.  相似文献

Two killifish common in east coast U.S.A. salt marshes,Cyprinodon variegatus Lacepede andFundulus heteroclitus Walbaum, differ in their ability to assimilate nitrogen from and grow on detritus.C. variegatus grew on a diet of detritus ofSpartina alterniflora Loisel, whileF. heteroclitus did not. In addition, when the fish were fed15N-labeledS. alterniflora detritus,15N:14N ratios inC. variegatus were higher than were ratios inF. heteroclitus. Therefore, even though both species ingest large amounts of detritus,C. variegatus makes more effective use of this portion of its diet. These dietary differences are corroborated by anatomical differences that suggest thatC. variegatus should make better use of detrital or plant tissues thanF. heteroclitus. In the label experiment, the degree of label in both fish was directly proportional to the degree of label in the food treatments. In previously published experiments designed to compare plant substrate with attached microbes as nitrogen sources for detritivores, %15N incorporated by a polychaete was also directly proportional to %15N in the detrital food. Therefore, it is difficult to distinguish between plant substrate and microbes as nitrogen sources for this detritivore.  相似文献

Destruction of tidal wetlands has led to a growing interest in the restoration and creation of new wetland habitat. However, while natural stands of vegetation have been successfully duplicated, less is understood about the establishment of faunal communities in created or restored tidal marshes. Infauna, which may form an important link between detrital production and commercially important finfish and decapods, have received limited attention in vegetated marsh habitats. We examined the infauna, changes in vegetation composition, and selected physical parameters in created marshes of different ages. Infauna were sampled using standard core sampling techniques. Vegetation composition and changes in relative abundance were observed using plot-point techniques. Vegetation plots indicated ongoing replacement ofSpartina alterniflora bySchoenoplectus robustus, a pattern supported by comparisons of vegetation at one of the sites to that reported in a previous study. Infauna exhibited significant differences between sites of different ages, with the intermediate-age site having intermediate densities for several taxa. These results suggest that both infauna and vegetation in created marshes undergo long-term change (ongoing after 10–20 yr), with both the plant and infaunal communities having qualitatively similar overall species composition to natural marsh areas.  相似文献

During the cooling of the geothermal water of Chott El-Fejjej (Tunisia), considerable scaling occurred in the inlet to the tower. To attempt to resolve this problem, decarbonation (CaCO3 precipitation) induced by seeding, with aragonite crystals recovered on site, coupled with air bubbling has been studied. The advantage of this new technique is that no chemical addition is needed and a large volume of sludge is avoided. Attention is paid to seeding time, airflow rates and amount of seed added. Experimental results indicate that crystallisation takes place on seed crystals; consequently, precipitation on the wall of the reactor is prevented. The seeding which accelerates the precipitation, that is dependent on the physico-chemical properties of the water, should be curried out at the earliest possible stage for instantaneous precipitation. A threshold for air bubbling, beyond which no improvement appeared is observed. The kinetics of the secondary germination are dependent on supersaturation of water, the airflow rate and the amount of added seed.  相似文献

An integrated approach for ecological and ecotoxicological sediment assessments along the freshwater saltwater interface (FSI) and estuarine areas in general was developed, through the adaptation of recently proposed methods for the midge larvaChironomus riparius (an in situ assay based on post-exposure feeding for sediment toxicity assessments in freshwater systems) and the development of new techniques for the polychaeteHediste (Nereis) diversicolor (an in situ post-exposure feeding assay). Based on the previously proposed methods, improvements were made to the feeding quantification ofC. riparius fourth instar larvae. A method to quantify the post-exposure feeding ofH. diversicolor was developed and optimized under laboratory conditions using newly hatchedArtemia franciscana nauplii as a food source. Assay chambers and procedures fromC. riparius assays were easily adapted forH. diversicolor in situ exposures. Sediment assays using this integrated approach were successfully performed at an uncontaminated river-estuarine system. They consisted of a 48-h exposure followed by a 1-h post-exposure feeding for chironomids and a 2-h post-exposure feeding for polychaetes. Good recovery rates were obtained after the 48-h field exposure. Fluctuations in various physicochemical variables at the FSI, due to the tidal regime, did not significantly influenceC. riparius larval post-exposure feeding rates, suggesting that uncontaminated freshwater sites located upstream of FSI areas can be used as reference sites forC. riparius in situ evaluations in estuaries. Adapted assay chambers and procedures were suitable forH. diversicolor in situ exposures.  相似文献
