From the well-observed data of star clusters, the age distribution of galactic clusters is obtianed as a function of their linear diameter and it is concluded that the observed age distribution of clusters for different linear diameter intervals within 1500 pc, is not seriously affected by the selection effects. If we assume that the rate of formation of clusters is constant, the lifetimes 1/2 of the clusters for different linear diameter intervals have been obtained and it is found that the clusters with a linear diameter in the range 0–1.9 pc have longer lifetimes than the clusters having linear diameters larger than 2.0 pc.Total masses of 57 clusters have been obtained using the catalogues of Piskunov (1983) and Myakutinet al. (1984). A study of age-dependence of cluster masses, based on the total masses of the clusters obtained in the present study and the cluster masses given by Bruch and Sanders (1983) and Lynga (1983b), shows that there is a decreasing trend in the total mass with the age, however, there is an increasing trend after the age of about 108 yr. It is also concluded that the initial rate of formation of rich clusters was relatively higher than the present rate of formation.  相似文献

From a comparative study between stellar and gas data it is seen that turbulent and hydrodynamic motions in the Galaxy are common to both types of materials:
  1. Galactic clusters have sizes and intrinsic dispersions compatible with the modified form of the Kolmogorov law seen in molecular clouds: undimensional velocities σ(km s?1)=0.54d 0.38 (pc). This indicates that ‘typic’ clusters were born from ‘typic’ dark clouds as these of the Lynds's catalogue (diametersd<10 pc, dispersions σ<1.5 km s?1 hydrogen densitiesn H>200 atom cm?3). These clouds have mass enough to form galactic clusters (1000–3000M ).
  2. The cluster formation is related to the supersonic range of the Kolmogorov relationship σ(d>1 pc) while the AFGKM stars are related to the subsonic range of the same relationship σ(d<0.3 pc), the intermediate transition zone is probably related to OB stars and/or trapezia.
  3. The effects of the magnetic fields in the clouds are also discussed. It seems to be that in the clouds the magnetic energy does not exceed the kinetic energy (proportional toσ 2(d)) and that this determinates the freezing criteria. The hypotheses introduced here can be checked with 21 cm Zeeman splitting.
  4. Low-density globular clusters are also coherent with the Kolmogorov relationship. Some hypotheses about their origin and the type of clouds where they were born are discussed. This last part of the study lets open the possibility of further studies about evolution of globular clusters.

Data on HII regions, molecular clouds, and methanol masers have been used to estimate the Sun’s distance from the symmetry plane z and the vertical disk scale height h. Kinematic distance estimates are available for all objects in these samples. The Local-arm (Orion-arm) objects are shown to affect noticeably the pattern of the z distribution. The deviations from the distribution symmetry are particularly pronounced for the sample of masers with measured trigonometric parallaxes, where the fraction of Local-arm masers is large. The situation with the sample of HII regions in the solar neighborhood is similar. We have concluded that it is better to exclude the Local arm from consideration. Based on the model of a self-gravitating isothermal disk, we have obtained the following estimates from objects located in the inner region of the Galaxy (RR 0): z = ?5.7 ± 0.5 pc and h 2 = 24.1 ± 0.9 pc from the sample of 639 methanol masers, z = ?7.6±0.4 pc and h 2 = 28.6±0.5 pc from 878HII regions, z = ?10.1 ± 0.5 pc and h 2 = 28.2 ± 0.6 pc from 538 giant molecular clouds.  相似文献

The galactic distribution of pulsars and shell remnants of supernovae (SN) as investigated on the basis of newly-estimated parameters. Special attention was paid to taking into account all possible selection effects and an attempt was made to reveal a statistically-pure ensemble of objects. On the basis of this ensemble we studied the radial andz-distribution of pulsars and supernova remnants (SNR).It is shown that the radial distribution of both objects is considered to have an annular structure with the maximum surface density at a distance of 4.5–5.3 kpc (if the distance of the Sun from the galactic centre is assumed to be equal to 8.5 kpc). The scle-height of the progenitors of SNRs is not more than 110 pc and only 15% of the SNRs, whose progenitors may also be massive runaway stars, are situated at 300 pc. The mean application of the pulsars is not more than 300 pc which agrees with the hypothesis about the genetic connection with type-II SN outbursts at the kinematic aget k5×106 yr and thez-component of spatial velocity beingV z=120 km s–1.The possible precursors of type-I SNRs by the shape of their radial distribution in late spirals and the various model calculations given in the literature, are also discussed.  相似文献

We have obtained new estimates of the Sun’s distance from the symmetry plane Z and the vertical disk scale height h using currently available data on stellar OB associations, Wolf–Rayet stars, HII regions, and Cepheids. Based on individual determinations, we have calculated the mean Z = ?16 ± 2 pc. Based on the model of a self-gravitating isothermal disk for the density distribution, we have found the following vertical disk scale heights: h = 40.2 ± 2.1 pc from OB associations, h = 47.8 ± 3.9 pc from Wolf–Rayet stars, h = 48.4 ± 2.5 pc from HII regions, and h = 66.2 ± 1.6 pc from Cepheids. We have estimated the surface, Σ = 6 kpc?2, and volume, D(Z ) = 50.6 kpc?3, densities from a sample of OB associations. We have found that there could be ~5000 OB associations in the Galaxy.  相似文献

We report the analysis of the young star clusters NGC 1960, NGC 2453 and NGC 2384 observed in the J (1.12 μm), H (1.65 μm) and K′ (2.2 μm) bands. Estimates of reddening, distance and age as E(B?V)=0.25, d=1380 pc and t=31.6 to 125 Myr for NGC 1960, E(B?V)=0.47, d=3311 pc and t=40 to 200 Myr for NGC 2453 and E(B?V)=0.25, d=3162 pc and t=55 to 125 Myr for NGC 2384 have been obtained. Also, we have extended the color–magnitude diagrams of these clusters to the fainter end and thus extended the luminosity functions to fainter magnitudes. The evolution of the main sequence and luminosity functions of these clusters have been compared with themselves as well as Lyngå 2 and NGC 1582.  相似文献

Because of a suspicion that a positive correlation exists between the luminosity of the first-class galaxies and the richness of the clusters, an attempt is made of taking into account the difference in richness (and presumably in total population) between the clusters withz<0.1 and the ones with 0.1<z0.2 (all being in the list of Peach, 1969) in the analysis of the redshift-magnitude relation of the brightest members. This analysis carried out with the clusters of richness 1 and 2, both present in the intervals of redshift 0.0–0.1 and 0.1–0.2 supports the steady-state model of the Universe in comparison with the category of the models with =0.This result induces another kind of selection effect, due to difference in the mean space density of the data points between the region withz<0.1 and the one with 0.1<z0.2, the mean volume occupied by the observed cluster being correlated with the luminosity of its brightest galaxy: also in this case the analysis supports the steady-state cosmology, while the tendency is clearly towards lower value ofq 0.The last result brings into consideration the models of the Universe with 0: the results obtained are compatible with those obtained by the analysis of other relations i.e. logN-logS of the 3C sources;N-z relation of the quasistellar objects;m-z for brightest quasars.  相似文献

HST NICMOS observations of a sample of 24 luminous (LIGs: L IR[8-1000 m] = 1011.0-11.99 L) and ultraluminous (ULIGs:L IR 1012.0 L) infrared galaxies are presented. The observations provide, for the first time, high resolution HST imagingof the imbedded 1.1 - 2.2 m nuclear regions of these mergers. Allbut one of the ULIGs are observed to have at least one compact (50-200 pc)nucleus, and more than half contain what appear to be blue star clusters. The warm infrared galaxies (i.e., the transition sources) are observed tohave bright nuclei which account for most of the light of the galaxy. This, combined with the tendency for the light of ULIGs to become morecentrally concentrated as a function of increasing wavelength, impliesthat most of their energy is generated within a region 50-200 pcacross.  相似文献

We analyze the encounters of the neutron star (pulsar) Geminga with open star clusters in the OB association Ori OB1a through the integration of epicyclic orbits into the past by taking into account the errors in the data. The open cluster ASCC21 is shown to be the most probable birthplace of either a single progenitor star for the Geminga pulsar or a binary progenitor system that subsequently broke up. Monte Carlo simulations of Geminga-ASCC21 encounters with the pulsar radial velocity V r = ?100±50 km s?1 have shown that close encounters could occur between them within ≤10 pc at about t = ?0.52 Myr. In addition, the trajectory of the neutron star Geminga passes at a distance of ≈25 pc from the center of the compact OB association λ Ori at about t = ?0.39 Myr, which is close to the age of the pulsar estimated from its timing.  相似文献

The density distributions of the two main components in interstellar hydrogen are calculated using 21 cm line data from the Berkeley Survey and the Pulkovo Survey. The narrow, dense component (state I of neutral hydrogen) has a Gaussianz-distribution with a scale-height of 50 pc in the local zones (the galactic disk). For the wide, tenuous component (hydrogen in state II) we postulate a distribution valid in the zones where such a material predominates (70 pc?z? 350 pc the galactic stratum) i.e., $$n_H \left( z \right) = n_H \left( 0 \right)exp \left( { - \left( {z/300{\text{ }}pc} \right)^{3/2} } \right).$$ Similar components are found in the dust distribution and in the available stellar data reaching sufficiently highz-altitudes. The scale-heights depend on the stellar type: the stratum in M III stars is considerably wider than in A stars (500–700 pc against 300 pc). The gas to dust ratio is approximately the same in both components: 0.66 atom cm?3 mag?1 kpc in the galactic plane. A third state of the gas is postulated associating it the observed free electron stratum at a scale-height of 660 pc (hydrogen fully ionized at high temperatures). The ratio between the observed dispersions in neutral hydrogen (thermal width plus turbulence) and the total dispersions corresponding to the real inner energies in the medium is obtained by a comparison with the dispersion distribution σ(z) of the different stellar types associated with the disk and the stratum $$\sigma ^2 \left( {total} \right) = \sigma ^2 \left( {21{\text{ cm line}}} \right) \cdot {\text{ }}Q^2 ,$$ from which we graphically obtainedQ 2=2.9 ± 0.3, although that number could be lower in the densest parts of the spiral arms. Its dependence on magnetic field and cosmic rays is analysed, indicating equipartition of the different energy components in the interstellar medium and consistency with the observed values of the magnetic field: i.e., fluctuations with an average of ~ 3 μG (associated with the disk) in a homogeneous background of ~ 1 μG (associated with the stratum). A minimum and maximumK z-force are obtained assuming extreme conditions for the total density distribution (gas plus stars). TheK z-force obtained from the interstellar gas in its different states using approximations of the Boltzmann equation is a reasonable intermediate case between maximum and minimumK z. The mass density obtained in the galactic plane is 0.20±0.05M pc?3, and the results indicate that the galactic disk is somewhat narrower and denser than has usually been believed. The effects of wave-like distributions of matter in thez-coordinate are analysed in relation with theK z-force, and comparisons with theoretical results are performed. A qualitative model for the galactic field of force is postulated together with a classification of the different zones of the Galaxy according to their observed ranges in velocity dispersions and the behaviour of the potential well at differentz-altitudes. The disk containing at least two-thirds of the total mass atz<100 pc, the stratum containing one-third or less of the total mass atz≤600–800 pc, and the halo at higherz-altitudes with a small fraction of such a mass which is difficult to evaluate.  相似文献

Photometric data inuvbyß system from 3713 stars is used to map the distribution of colour excesses up to 500 parsec from the Sun, producing diagrams for a series of layers aligned with the galactic plane. Individual clouds are detected, with a mean diameter of 6 parsecs, while cloud complexes have a mean diameter of 100 pc. From the maps it seems that the interstellar medium near the Sun presents regions of non-negligible extinction, while the Sun itself is enbedded in a diffuse cloud, or slightly off its border. The large scatter in the distribution ofE(b-) is confirmed, with a mean extinction ofA v=0 . m 38 up to 500 pc.  相似文献

The magnetic fields observed in the galactic disc are generated by the differential rotation and the helical turbulent motions of interstellar gas. On the scalesl=2k –1 which lie in the intervall 0<l<l e (l 0100 pc is the energy-range scale of the galactic turbulence), the spectral density of the kinetic energy of turbulence (k –5/3) exceeds the magnetic energy spectral density (k –1). The equipartition between magnetic and kinetic energies is reached atl=l e 6 pc in the intercloud medium and is maintained down to the scalel=l d 0.03 pc. In dense interstellar cloudsl e is determined by the individual cloud size andl d 0.1 pc.The internal turbulent velocities in Hi clouds (cloud size is assumed to be 10 pc) lie in the range from 1.8 to 5.6km s–1, fitting well within the observed range of internal rms velocities. Dissipation of the interstellar MHD turbulence leads to creation of temperature fluctuations with amplitudes of 150 K and 65 K in dense clouds and intercloud medium, respectively. The small-scale fluctuations observed in the interstellar medium may arise from such perturbations due to the thermal instability, for instance. Dissipation of the MHD turbulence energy provides nearly half of the energy supply needed to maintain the thermal balance of the interstellar medium.  相似文献

Using published flux densitiesS at low frequenciesv, radio spectra were constructed for 3C, 4C, and 4CT radio sources in Abell clusters of galaxies, radio galaxies outside Abell clusters, and quasars with known redshifts. About half the sources in rich Abell clusters (richness classesR>-2) have steep spectra between 38 and 178 MHz with spectral indices 38 178 > whereSv . However, radio galaxies outside clusters have values of 38 178 1.2, and no steep spectra were found among 170 quasars. The radio sources in rich clusters are probably confined by intergalactic gas, and the steep spectra develop over a period of 109 yr as relativistic electrons lose energy. The absence of steep spectra among quasars does not necessarily mean that quasars never occur in rich clusters of galaxies, since quasars are probably being observed only in their early high-luminosity phases. The possibility that some quasar events occur in the nuclei of the dominant cD galaxies in clusters is discussed, but quasar events may occur in more than one type of galaxy.  相似文献

We have measured the lifetimes of all compact emission features visible on three sets of high time resolution soft X-ray images. The spectrum of lifetimes is found to be heavily weighted toward short lifetimes. The number of features present on the disk which live 2–48 hours is at least ten times as great as the number living more than 48 hours. The distribution of lifetimes can be fit in all three cases by a four-parameter function N(t) = N s exp(-t/ s ) + N L exp(-t/ L ), with s = 8.7±0.2, L = 35±4 and N s 10N L . Features living two days or less have a very broad latitude distribution (Golub et al., 1974, 1975) whereas nearly all longer-lived features are found within 30° of the equator. The growth rates of long-lived vs short-lived points are the same to within 20%, the major difference being that long-lived points continue to grow and generally reach larger sizes.Harvard College Observatory/Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory.  相似文献

The well-known shell supernova remnant (SNR) HB3 is part of a feature-rich star-forming region together with the nebulae W3, W4, and W5. We study the HI structure around this SNR using five RATAN-600 drift curves obtained at a wavelength of 21 cm with an angular resolution of 2′ in one coordinate over the radial-velocity range ?183 to +60 km s?1 in a wider region of the sky and with a higher sensitivity than in previous works by other authors. The spatial-kinematic distribution of HI features around the SNR clearly shows two concentric expanding shells of gas that surround the SNR and coincide with it in all three coordinates (α, δ, and V). The outer shell has a radius of 133 pc, a thickness of 24 pc, and an expansion velocity of 48 km s?1. The mass of the gas in it is ≈2.3 × 105M. For the inner shell, these parameters are 78 pc, 36 pc, 24 km s? 1, and 0.9 × 105M, respectively. The inner shell is immediately adjacent to the SNR. Assuming that the outer shell was produced by the stellar wind and the inner shell arose from the shock wave of the SNR proper, we estimated the age of the outer shell, ≈1.7 × 106 yr, and the mechanical luminosity of the stellar wind, 1.5 × 1038 erg s?1. The inner shell has an age of ≈106 yr and corresponds to a total supernova explosion energy of ≈1052 erg.  相似文献

This paper deals with the determination of the three-dimensional distribution of flare stars in the Pleiades cluster. For this purpose a one-dimensional distribution is first constructed from the observed two-dimensional distribution of the stars. It is shown that reliable construction of one dimensioned distribution requires solution of the Abel equation. The last one used to determine the dependence of the true three-dimensional distribution of the density of flare stars on distance from the center of the cluster. This reveals a spherical layer of width 0.5 pc (2.8 R 3.5 pc) with a deficit in the number of flare stars. A profile of the three-dimensional density distribution of flare stars is constructed in the region of deficit. The characteristics of this region are described.  相似文献

Based on our own observational data, we have constructed the mass functions for three young-and intermediate-age Galactic star clusters, Trumpler 2, NGC 7243, and NGC 1513. Their mean slopes Γ fall within the Scalo range: Γ = ?1.7 ± 0.5 for 1M < M < 10M . For each of the clusters, we also analyze the mass distribution of their members as a function of the distance to the center. Noticeable mass segregation in the sense of massive-star concentration toward the cluster center has been detected in Trumpler 2 and NGC 7243. Deviations from rectilinearity in the same direction are observed at log M ≈ 0.41 in each of the three zones of Trumpler 2, which can be interpreted as a small dip in the mass function. We have found peculiarities in NGC 1513 that are difficult to explain by observational selection alone. Comparison of our results with similar studies reveals a similarity in radial Γ distribution for NGC 7243 with h Per and for Trumpler 2 with IC 1805.  相似文献

The spiral structure of the Large Magellanic Cloud has been investigated using the best spiral indicators (Table I). A clear spiral pattern emerges from the distribution of the optical Hii-regions with diametersD256 pc and the blue supergiants with (U-B)o–0.60 (i.e., O-B8 Ia-O to Iab) (Figure 1). This structure is reflected in the distribution of supernova remnants, OB-associations, young open clusters, Wolf-Rayet-Stars and X-ray sources (Figure 3), andM-supergiants. The spiral features emanate from the 30 Doradus Hii-complex as centre and are completely unrelated to the LMC Bar. The structure around 30 Dor is especially well seen in the distribution and even the form (elongation) of the dark clouds (Figure 3). In Section 3 a new interpretation of the 21 cm-line data is attempted based on an analysis of the neutral hydrogen densityN HI integrated over the line of sight. The ridge lines of the integrated 21 cm-line intensities delineate two main features with a half-intensity width of 0.9 kpc, roughly coinciding with the two main optical features. Apart from many differing details the basic structure of the distribution of Hi and of the optical spiral tracers is similar: (1) 30 Dor is the centre of density and starting-point of the spiral features, (2) two main complex arms I and II dominate the distribution, (3) the arms are fragmented optically (Ia-c and IIa-e) as well as in the Hi, start with the same steep pitch angles in directions displaced by about 60° (instead of the usual diametral symmetry of common two-armed spirals) and wind in the same directions. In the discussion (Section 4) it is first shown why the optical Hii-regions with small diametersD<6 pc do not show the spiral structure (Figure 2) due to selection and age effects. The LMC is classified exclusively from the appearance of the spiral tracers as Scp in the Hubble-system (the peculiarity is the asymmetry of the spiral structure) and ScIII-IVp in the DDO-system. Arguments are given to justify such a classification procedure. Similar galaxies may be MCG 4-31-14 and NGC 3664 S(B)IV-V:.The tidal action of our Galaxy is most probably unimportant for the spiral structure of the LMC, certainly so in the inner parts where the features are sharpest. Evidence is presented to support the view that the enormous supergiant Hii-complex 30 Doradus (M H II3×105 M ,M tot=5×106 M ) is the nucleus of the spiral LMC.The LMC as a pathological spiral helps us to understand together with the disturbed also the normal function of spiral formation. A density-wave type theory of spiral structure is hardly compatible with the observations; an ejection theory appears to be more promising.  相似文献

Integrated CCD BVR photometric measurements of Magellanic Cloud (MC) star clusters are described and summarized. The integrated colour-magnitude diagrams and colour-age relations for these systems imply that (a) the colour distribution of MC clusters is distinctly bi-modal (although this bi-modality is not simply explained as a distinction between young and old clusters), and (b) the MCs are probably not forming as many (if any) extremely massive clusters at the present as they did early in their lifetimes (i.e., 10 Gyr ago). Structurally, the MC clusters are seen to be intermediate between galactic globular and open clusters and their radial surface brightness profiles can generally be adequately fitted to single-mass King (1966) models (some exceptions do occur, however). Although the distribution of the derived structural parameters of young and old MC clusters are similar, they differ significantly from the distribution of structural parameters observed in intermediate-age clusters, suggesting that these structural properties do not evolve monotonically with time.Visiting astronomer at the Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory, National Optical Astronomy Observatories, operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc., under contract with the National Science Foundation.  相似文献
