Radiocarbon dates of subfossil pines found on dry ground above the present-day tree-limit are reported from northern Sweden. The uppermost and oldest specimen germinated c. AD 300–600. During some shorter part of this interval the tree-limit might have been 235 m higher than it was at the turn of the last century. Based on a current adiabatic lapse rate of 0.7°C per 100m, it may be tentatively deduced that the summers were at least 1.6°C warmer. The pine tree-limit and upper pine populations are inferred to have declined substantially shortly after AD 600. The tree-limit reached a low at the end of the Little Ice Age. In parallel with the warming of c. 1°C during the first half of the 20th century the tree-limit advanced 110m altitudinally. Spruce forest dominance seems to have increased at the study site during the first half of the 19th century, when thermal and hygric conditions may have been optimally balanced. Although basically a direct climatic response, it can be hypothesized that the spruce expansion was facilitated by the pine demise during the Little Ice Age.  相似文献

Altogether 54 14C-datings of megafossil Pinus sylvestris L. from above the present tree-limit in the southern Swedish Scandes were evaluated. The samples were discussed in relation to the present-day tree-limit of pine. Pine reached almost 200 m higher than at present shortly after deglaciation and remained at very high altitudes until at least 4,000–3,500 14C years B.P. The conclusion was that the precise biological and climatological interpretation of these regionally sampled data is still obscure. It is impossible to judge whether clusters of megafossil pine represent periods relatively favourable for pine growth and reproduction or merely periods advantageous for production of dead wood and its long-term preservation. In terms of climate, these alternatives reasonably implicate widely different conditions.  相似文献

利用青藏高原改则地区一条跨越班公-怒江缝合带的10站GPS剖面在2007-2009年的3期流动观测资料,采用自洽的统一参考框架方法分析研究了改则地区的现今地壳差异运动,得出该区域现今地壳应变率以南北向挤压为主,量值达(104.0±28.6)×10-9/a,同时兼有东西向拉张,量值约为(25.4±17.7)×10-9/a。利用半无限弹性空间的断裂位错模型和GPS速度矢量的约束,反演获得班公-怒江缝合带在该地区(即改则-洞错断裂)的现今运动以右旋走滑为主,走滑速率约为(7.4±0.8) mm/a。  相似文献

General problems in determining and interpreting shell C14 dates are discussed: calculation methods, factors influencing primary activity (apparent age), and determination of contamination. It is concluded that shell dates are reliable when handled carefully. Measurements on ten shells, collected between 1898 and 1923 on the Norwegian coast, gave apparent ages from 340±75 to 550±80 years, indicating that apparent age is not a significant problem in dating of Norwegian shells.  相似文献

Luminescence dating based on K-feldspars and using both TL and OSL methods have been performed on 94 sediment samples from East Greenland. The ages go back more than 380 ka, but are mainly from the last interglaciation and the subsequent period and include both shallow-marine/coastal-fluvial and ice proximal meltwater sediments. Independent age control indicates that the dates in the first group generally fall within ± 15% of the expected age, although a few samples show larger deviations. The ice proximal sediments, on the other hand, show a much larger spread and exaggerated ages, probably owing to incomplete bleaching. OSL may give better results than TL in these sediments.  相似文献

An exhaustive 14C dating programme of molluscs from the Fossvogur sediments in Reykjavik. Iceland is presented. For the first time all the fossiliferous units of the sediments are dated. The results confirm earlier conclusions of a widespread occurrence of marine sediments of Allerød age in Reykjavik. The set of dates from the Fossvogur sediments shows a narrow 14C age distribution (standard deviation of ±235 years) of molluscs from all localities and from successive marine units in vertical sections. The weighted mean conventional 14C age is 11,400 BP. Assuming a reservoir effect of 400 years. this corresponds to a reservoir-corrected age of I1,000 BP. i.e. the Allerød- Younger Dryas transition for the sampled units, These new 14C dates from Fossvogur confirm the need for a revision of the Upper Pleistocene chronology of the Reykjavik region. They also have a bearing on the Late Weichselian record of glacier readvances and sea-level changes in the area. The dates suggest that the marine units in Fossvogur accumulated within a restricted time-span of a few hundred years. The sediments in Fossvogur are of volcaniclastic origin and are extremely lithified, indicating local geothermal activity soon after their deposition. This may explain anomalously high D/L amino acid ratios measured in molluscs from the Fossvogur sediments. δ13C and δ18O results suggest that temperatures may have ranged up to 60°C.  相似文献

Lacustrine sediments, 13 m thick, have been discovered under a Late Valdaian (Late Weichselian) moraine complex in a palaeokarst depression at Biržai, northern Lithuania. Wood fragments from silty layers in the basal part of the section were 14C dated at 34,440 ± 1500 (Vs-412) and 33,460 ± 1060 BP (LU-1633). Pollen analytical results suggest that taiga landscapes similar to the present-day environments in the Pechora Basin and eastern Urals occurred on the southern cryogenic grounds. Evidently, the ice sheet did not penetrate into the eastern Baltic region during the Middle Valdaian interval.  相似文献

Thermoluminescence dating of Dimlington Stadial deposits in eastern England   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The loess component of a solifluction deposit of the Dimlington Stadial exposed at the inland site of Eppleworth in eastern England gave a thermoluminescence date of 17.5 ± 1.6 × 103 years. The solifluction deposit is overlain by a slightly weathered till correlated with the Skipsea Till of coastal exposures. which lies between organic horizons with radiocarbon dates of 18,500–18,240 B.P. and 13,045 B.P. Although the till must have been deposited during the Dimlington Stadial (after 18,240 B.P. at Dimlington and after 17,500 B.P. at Epplcworth), it gave apparent TL dates of 42.1 ± 3.6 × 103 years at Eppleworth and 102 ± 9 × 103 years at Dimlington, indicating that the components of the till were not exposed to light immediately before deposition.  相似文献

汝阳群分布在华北克拉通西南缘,位于河南-陕西-山西交界地区,主要为一套未变质的碎屑岩及碳酸盐岩地层,不整合于熊耳群火山岩系之上,其上被洛峪群整合覆盖。长期以来,其地质时代一直存有较大的争议。本文通过对汝阳群下部白草坪组4个石英砂岩样品中的碎屑锆石进行LA-ICP-MS U-Pb年龄测定,获得的207Pb/206Pb年龄分布范围为3 000~1 800 Ma,主要集中在2 600~2 400 Ma之间(约占67%),年龄主峰值为2 550~2 500 Ma,说明其沉积物质主要来源于新太古代末以及古元古代的地质体。其中,最年轻锆石的207Pb/206Pb谐和年龄值分别为1 817±22 Ma、1 838±23 Ma、1 924±17 Ma和1 829±28 Ma,说明汝阳群沉积时代不老于1 800 Ma,与其上覆洛峪群中近期获得1 611±8 Ma的年龄相吻合,因此其形成时代应为中元古代早期。  相似文献

Neptune's Cave in the Velfjord–Tosenfjord area of Nordland, Norway is described, together with its various organic deposits. Samples of attached barnacles, loose marine molluscs, animal bones and organic sediments were dated, with radiocarbon ages of 9840 ± 90 and 9570 ± 80 yr BP being derived for the barnacles and molluscs, based on the superseded but locally used marine reservoir age of 440 years. A growth temperature of c . 7.5 °C in undiluted seawater is deduced from the δ13C and δ18O values of both types of marine shell, which is consistent with their early Holocene age. From the dates, and an assessment of local Holocene uplift and Weichselian deglaciation, a scenario is constructed that could explain the situation and condition of the various deposits. The analysis uses assumed local isobases and sea-level curve to give results: that are consistent with previous data, that equate the demise of the barnacles to the collapse of a tidewater glacier in Tosenfjord, and that constrain the minimum extent of local Holocene uplift. An elk fell into the cave in the mid-Holocene at 5100 ± 70 yr BP, after which a much later single 'bog-burst' event at 1780 ± 70 yr BP could explain the transport of the various loose deposits further into the cave.  相似文献

通过渭南北庄村约31,000—18,000aB.P.沉积物中花粉百分含量、浓度和沉积率分析,对该时期古植被取得一些新认识,即当时云杉、冷杉等亚高山针叶树可能并未形成较大面积的森林,而是呈岛状分布于水体周围,并与区域性蒿草草原呈镶嵌状分布,植被并不稳定,亚高山针叶树曾两度出现又消失。从20,000aB.P.无乔木花粉出现,到18,000aB.P.难以找到任何花粉,本区变为无乔木生长的荒漠草原,气候曾经过数次冷偏湿与冷干的交替后,从18,000aB.P.起变得极度干燥和寒冷。  相似文献

Here, we present and discuss results from geo‐archaeological and palaeo‐zoological investigations at the Palaeolithic site Pymva Shor, in the Russian Arctic. As many as 3324 vertebrate fauna remains were recovered during two excavations. This includes bones of mammals, birds and fish. Radiocarbon dates were obtained from 26 specimens. The results show ages in the range 30–3 cal. ka BP. Hare and reindeer are the best represented amongst the identified mammalian species, whilst ptarmigan and various wader species dominate the avian bones. The Pleistocene assemblage includes herbivorous herd animals such as horse, bison and musk ox. These species are typical of the treeless tundra‐steppe landscape that existed during the Lateglacial. Of particular interest is a cave lion specimen that has been radiocarbon dated to approximately 15.5 cal. ka BP. According to our knowledge, this is one of the latest dated examples of this species in Eurasia. The faunal composition in the Holocene assemblage is strikingly different and includes distinct forest taxa such as beaver and pine marten. The avifauna also supports a forested environment with the presence of black grouse. A few stone artefacts were found within the strata, and have been radiocarbon dated to 16–15 cal. ka BP, suggesting that there were humans in the Pymva Shore area at that time. We identified impact notches and cut marks on some radiocarbon‐dated reindeer and bison bones, showing that humans were present twice during the Younger Dryas period. A fourth occupation phase is identified during the mid‐Holocene (6–5 cal. ka BP). We also investigated river terraces and obtained a series of luminescence dates. These have been used to reconstruct the geological history and the relationship to the find‐bearing strata.  相似文献

14C dating and pollen analysis of the surface organic (LFH) horizons of several humo-ferric podzol profiles forming a soil catena close to the 'Little Ice Agc' outer moraine ridge of Haugabreen, southern Norway, are used to examine the timing and nature of podzol development at the low-/sub-alpine margin of the Jostedalsbreen area. Comparison with results from a palaeosol buried beneath the outer moraine shows that FH horizon development began as early as 5,265 ± 65 B.P., but that it was not synehronous across the profiles, the latest profile having a date of 3,590 ± 65 B.P. It is argued that surface organic horizons developed as a response to a deterioration of climate and possibly the recrudescence of the Myklebustbreen ice cap at c . 5,000 B.P., and that the dates for horizon initiation vary according to local topographic and soil-hydrologic conditions. It is still uncertain whether the hump-ferric podzols were preceded by brown earths or weakly podzolised sub-alpine podzolic soils, but at all sites where pollen evidence is available it appears that FH initiation took place beneath Betula woodland.  相似文献

The Quaternary stratigraphy in Finland is discussed on the basis of an example from the Oulainen area of Ostrobothnia. Organogenic deposits found beneath till at this site are correlated with the Eemian Interglacial on biostratigraphical evidence. This is confirmed by TL dates of 97,000 ± 18,000 B.P. and 150,000 ± 30,000 B.P., whereas a finite radiocarbon date of 63,200 +5500 -3200 B.P. is probably too young. Correlation of the Weichselian stratigraphy is based on deep-sea oxygen isotope data, in which the variations in isotope ratios are assumed to reflect global changes in climate and fluctuations in the volume of the ice-caps. It is concluded on the latter grounds that Finland must have been free of ice at two periods during the Early Weichselian but at least for the most part covered by ice thereafter up to the final deglaciation. The sediments attributed to the only known Weichselian interstadial in Finland, the Perapohjola Interstadial, are taken to correspond most probably to the Brørup, although some may represent the Odderade, Information on the Weichselian till stratigraphy in the Oulainen area is largely confined to the deglaciation phase, the relatively complex nature of which suggests that complete reconstruction of the earlier phases of the Weichselian in an area such as Finland, located towards the centre of the ice sheet, is scarcely feasible by the methods currently available.  相似文献

Several sections have been studied to understand the distribution and interrelation of basic genetic types of Quaternary deposits in the Uimon basin and adjacent area. The OSL date of 101 ± 10 ka from the glaciolacustrine terrace on the northeastern rim of the basin corresponds to the cool substage of MIS 5. The glaciolacustrine sediments of the northern rim are covered with widespread diamictic flows of the outburst draining of the ice-dammed lake. The diamicts are overlain by a subaerial complex of loesses and three fossil soils. From the OSL loess dates in the range of 43 to 49 ka we infer that the complex formed from the early MIS 3 through the Holocene. This is also supported by radiocarbon dates from alluvial deposits incised into the glaciolacustrine terrace and into megaflood sediments of the final draining of the last paleolake. The OSL dates in the range of 77 to 89 ka from alluvial sediments indicate that postglacial downcutting of the present-day Katun’ valley probably started just after MIS 5. The discrepancy between the beryllium dates from dropstones and Holocene TL-dates of the Katun’ valley floods ranging from 23 to 6 ka can be explained if the younger floods are related to the draining of moraine- and rock slide dammed rather than ice-dammed lakes. The younger floods, though being less voluminous than the glacial megafloods, were capable of producing giant ripple marks.  相似文献

In eastern Indonesia, the Central Sulawesi fault system consists of complex left-lateral strike-slip fault zones located within the triple junction area between the Pacific, Indo-Australian and Eurasian plates. Seismicity in Central Sulawesi documents low-magnitude shallow earthquakes related, from NW to SE, to the NNW-trending Palu-Koro (PKF) and WNW-trending Matano fault zones. Study of the active fault traces indicates a northward growing complexity in the PKF segmentation. Left-lateral displacement of 370 ± 10 m of streams incised within fans, whose deposition has been dated at 11 000 ± 2300 years, yields a calculated PKF horizontal slip rate of 35 ± 8 mm yr−1. This geologically determined long-term slip rate agrees with the far-field strike-slip rate of 32–45 mm yr−1 previously proposed from GPS measurements and confirms that the PKF is a fast slipping fault with a relatively low level of seismicity.  相似文献

Late Pleistocene organic-rich sediments exposed in coastal bluffs near the head of Plaza Creek, East Falkland, have yielded conventional and AMS 14C dates of between 36 and 28 ka BP, and possess a pollen spectrum dominated by grasses, indicating a vegetation assemblage similar to that of the present day. Although some sample dates are anomalous and contamination by non-contemporaneous carbon cannot be ruled out entirely, the age estimates are consistent with evidence and dates from Antarctica, South America and the amphi-North Atlantic for climate shifts to interstadial conditions at around that time. The organic-rich units are developed in and enclosed by deposits attributed to processes of periglacial mass wasting. Grain-size characteristics suggest that these sediments may have been emplaced by solifluction, shallow translational landsliding and surface wash in at least five mass-wasting episodes. Some of the mass-wasting sediments might correlate with solifluction deposits above and below a podsolic soil dated to 26 ka BP at San Carlos, East Falkland, and with periods of cirque and valley glaciation identified in the uplands of the Falkland Islands. The similarity between late Pleistocene interstadial, Holocene and present-day pollen assemblages, and the lack of vegetation change within these periods, is characteristic of most cool temperate Southern Ocean islands, and may reflect the lack of sensitivity of the vegetation to climate change and/or a lack of climate variability for the time intervals covered. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A radiocarbon-dated Ancylus transgression site in south-eastern Finland   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
A previously studied site at Hangassuo in the commune of Anjalankoski, formerly Sippola, in south-eastern Finland has been re-examined. The basal layers of the profile contain a clay-gyttja horzon deposited on peat, indicative of the Ancylus Lake transgression. A date of approx. 9500 B.P. was obtained for the lower peat layer, deposited after isolation of the basin during the Yoldia phase, and a date of 9280 ± 190 B.P. for the lower part of the transgression horizon. The upper part gave a date of 8870 ± 170 B.P. These dates suggest that the beginning of the Ancylus Lake phase and the Ancylus transgression occurred considerably earlier than has previously been suggested in the Late Quaternary chronology for Finland. The appearance of Alnus in the area is also dated. The pollen curve begins at 8360 ± 190 B.P. and the major increase of the species occurs at 7810 ± 180 B.P.

The Saltville Valley of southwestern Virginia contains an abundance of extinct Late Pleistocene megafauna. Recent excavations in the valley produced two particularly notable discoveries, the remains of a scavenged mammoth ( Mammuthus sp.) and a giant short-faced bear ( Arctodus simus ). The bear is the first carnivoran record from Saltville, and its large dental dimensions, dentary proportions, and exceptionally short-face, evince an exceedingly powerful bite for this individual. Mammoth remains are relatively abundant from Saltville, but the material described here preserves extreme examples of scavenging by carnivores. Based on comparisons with the feeding behavior and bone alteration patterns of extant hyenas, cats, wolves, and bears, we conclude that at least two types of large carnivorans scavenged this mammoth carcass. AMS radiocarbon dates of 14 510 ± 55 14C yr BP on the Mammuthus and 14 853 ± 55 14C yr BP on the A. simus demonstrate that they are nearly the same age. Very few direct radiocarbon dates on A. simus have been reported from the contiguous United States. The Saltville A. simus represents the most eastern date for the species, as well as the only date from the Appalachian Highlands.  相似文献

通过对滇东南薄竹山花岗复式岩体3个代表性花岗岩样品的LA-ICP-MS锆石U-Pb同位素年龄测试,获得了该岩体的形成时代。其中,雷达站单元样品的206Pb-238U加权平均年龄为(86.51±0.52) Ma(MSWD值为2.4);所作底单元样品的206Pb-238U 加权平均年龄为(87.54±0.65)  Ma(MSWD值为1.6);洋芋树单元样品的206Pb-238U 加权平均年龄为(87.83±0.39)  Ma (MSWD值为0.15)。这些分布比较集中的年龄数据为薄竹山花岗岩体提供了一个准确的形成时限。这些年龄数据表明,薄竹山花岗岩体同区域内的其它岩浆岩和与之相关的个旧、大厂、都龙超大型锡多金属矿床等都是晚白垩世的产物,均为华南西部地区岩浆-成矿带的重要组成部分,也是华南西部晚白垩世大规模成岩成矿作用在滇东南地区的又一具体表现。  相似文献
