Observations at the first opposition are used to determine the orbits of 16 near-Earth asteroids with two or more observed oppositions. The orbits are improved by the differential method. This paper considers two modifications of the improvement technique, which are compared to the classical method based on the principle of the least square method (LSM). The first modification uses the principle of least absolute deviations (LAD). In the second modification, the differences O - C (between the observed and calculated positions) are transformed to fit into a new coordinate system whereby the axes go parallel and perpendicular to the asteroid’s apparent path (the modified differential method (MDM)). The orbits determined from one opposition by the classical LSM, LAD, and MDM are compared to a more accurate orbit calculated by the LSM from all the available oppositions. The calculations show that in 13 cases out of 16, the asteroid orbits calculated by LAD are more accurate than those calculated by the classical LSM. The improvement by the modified differential method, which includes the O - C transformation, does not produce any perceptible increase in accuracy when compared to the orbits calculated by the classical method.  相似文献

Long-term changes in two flare stars, EV Lac and BY Dra, have been detected by Mavridiset al. (1982). These long cyclic periods have been registered in theB-band at their quiescent-state luminosity as well as at their flare activity. Those observational data of the two previously mentioned flare stars as well as another observational data of the flare star, UV Cet, at its flare activity were submitted to our computer programme for periodicity detection excluding cyclic periods which have amplitudes less than tenth magnitude for great significance. Some of our results coincided with the long cyclic periods detected by Mavridiset al. (1982) while the remainder of our results have had no complete coincidence with those registered by Mavridiset al. (1982).  相似文献

Abstract— Video observations of the Leonid shower aboard two aircraft in the 1998 Leonid multi-instrument aircraft campaign and from ground locations in China are presented. Observing at altitude proved particularly effective, with four times higher rates due to low extinction and low angular velocity at the horizon. The rates, derived from a total of 2500 Leonid meteors, trace at least two distinct dust components. One dominated the night of 1998 November 16/17. This two-day wide component was rich in bright meteors with r = N (m + 1)/N (m) ≈ 1.5 (s = 1.4) and peaked at an influx of 3.1 ± 0.4 × 10?12 m?2 s?1 (for particles of mass <7 × 10?5 g) at solar longitude Λ0 ≈ 234.52 (Eq. J2000). The other more narrow component peaked on 1998 November 17/18 at Λ0 = 235.31 ± 0.01. Rates were elevated above the broad component between Λ0 = 235.15 and 235.40, symmetric around the current node of the parent comet 55P/Tempel-Tuttle, peaking at 5.1 ± 0.2 × 10?12 m?2 s?1. The population index was higher, r = 1.8 ± 0.1 (s = 1.7), but not as high as in past Leonid storms (r = 3.0). The flux profile of this component has an unusual asymmetric shape, which implies a blend of contributions from at least two different but relatively recent epochs of ejection. The variation of r across the profile might be due to mass-dependent ejection velocities of the narrowest component. High rates of faint meteors occurred only in an isolated five-minute interval at Λ0 = 235.198, which is likely the result of a single meteoroid breakup in space.  相似文献

A flexible and informative vector approach to the problem of physical libration of the rigid Moon has been developed in which three Euler differential equations are supplemented by 12 kinematic ones. A linearized system of equations can be split into an even and odd systems with respect to the reflection in the plane of the lunar equator, and rotational oscillations of the Moon are presented by superposition of librations in longitude and latitude. The former is described by three equations and consists of unrestricted oscillations with a period of T 1 = 2.878 Julian years (amplitude of 1.855″) and forced oscillations with periods of T 2 = 27.201 days (15.304″), one stellar year (0.008″), half a year (0.115″), and the third of a year (0.0003″) (five harmonics altogether). A zero frequency solution has also been obtained. The effect of the Sun on these oscillations is two orders of magnitude less than that of the Earth. The libration in latitude is presented by five equations and, at pertrubations from the Earth, is described by two harmonics of unrestricted oscillations (T 5 ≈ 74.180 Julian years, T 6 ≈ 27.347 days) and one harmonic of forced oscillations (T 3 = 27.212 days). The motion of the true pole is presented by the same harmonics, with the maximum deviation from the Cassini pole being 45.3″. The fifth (zero) frequency yields a stationary solution with a conic precession of the rotation axis (previously unknown). The third Cassini law has been proved. The amplitudes of unrestricted oscillations have been determined from comparison with observations. For the ratio $ \frac{{\sin I}} {{\sin \left( {I + i} \right)}} \approx 0.2311 $ \frac{{\sin I}} {{\sin \left( {I + i} \right)}} \approx 0.2311 , the theory gives 0.2319, which confirms the adequacy of the approach. Some statements of the previous theory are revised. Poinsot’s method is shown to be irrelevant in describing librations of the Moon. The Moon does not have free (Euler) oscillations; it has oscillations with a period of T 5 ≈ 74.180 Julian years rather than T ≈ 148.167 Julian years.  相似文献

We present the first dynamical solution of the triple asteroid system (45) Eugenia and its two moons Petit–Prince (diameter ∼ 7 km) and S/2004 (45) 1 (diameter ∼ 5 km). The two moons orbit at 1165 and 610 km from the primary, describing an almost-circular orbit (e ∼ 6 × 10−3 and e ∼ 7 × 10−2 respectively). The system is quite different from the other known triple systems in the main belt since the inclinations of the moon orbits are sizeable (9° and 18° with respect to the equator of the primary respectively). No resonances, neither secular nor due to Lidov–Kozai mechanism, were detected in our dynamical solution, suggesting that these inclinations are not due to excitation modes between the primary and the moons. A 10-year evolution study shows that the orbits are slightly affected by perturbations from the Sun, and to a lesser extent by mutual interactions between the moons. The estimated J2 of the primary is three times lower than the theoretical one, calculated assuming the shape of the primary and an homogeneous interior, possibly suggesting the importance of other gravitational harmonics.  相似文献

We discuss observations of the first galaxies, within cosmic reionization, at centimeter and millimeter wavelengths. We present a summary of current observations of the host galaxies of the most distant QSOs (z∼6). These observations reveal the gas, dust, and star formation in the host galaxies on kpc-scales. These data imply an enriched ISM in the QSO host galaxies within 1 Gyr of the big bang, and are consistent with models of coeval supermassive black hole and spheroidal galaxy formation in major mergers at high redshift. Current instruments are limited to studying truly pathologic objects at these redshifts, meaning hyper-luminous infrared galaxies (L FIR ∼1013 L ). ALMA will provide the one to two orders of magnitude improvement in millimeter astronomy required to study normal star forming galaxies (i.e. Ly-α emitters) at z∼6. ALMA will reveal, at sub-kpc spatial resolution, the thermal gas and dust—the fundamental fuel for star formation—in galaxies into cosmic reionization.  相似文献

In this paper we derive some recurrence formulae which can be used to calculate the Fourier expansions of the functions (r/a) n cosmv and (r/a) n sinmv in terms of the eccentric anomalyE or the mean anomalyM. We also establish a recurrence process for computing the series expansions for alln andm when the expansions of two basic series are known. These basic series were given in explicit form in the classical literature. The recurrence formulae are linear in the functions involved and thus make very simple the computation of the series. This work was supported by NASA contract No. NASr 54(06).—The paper was presented at the AIAA/AAS meeting, Princeton University, August 1969.  相似文献

A detailed analysis of characteristics of coronal mass ejections and flares associated with deca-hectometer wavelength type-II radio bursts (DH-CMEs and DH-flares) observed in the period 1997–2008 is presented. A sample of 62 limb events is divided into two populations known as after-flare CMEs (AF-CMEs) and before-flare CMEs (BF-CMEs) based on the relative timing of the flare and CME onsets. On average, AF-CMEs (1589 km s−1) have more speed than the BF-CMEs (1226 km s−1) and the difference between mean values are highly significant (P∼2%). The average CME nose height at the time of type-II start is at larger distance for AF-CMEs than the BF-CMEs (4.89 and 3.84 R o, respectively). We found a good anti-correlation for accelerating (R a=−0.89) and decelerating (R d=−0.78) AF-CMEs. In the case of decelerating BF-CMEs, the correlation seems to be similar to that for decelerating AF-CMEs (R d=−0.83). The number of decelerating AF-CMEs is 51% only; where as, the number of decelerating BF-CMEs is 83%. The flares associated with BF-CMEs have shorter rise and decay times than flares related to AF-CMEs. We found statistically significant differences between the two sets of associated DH-type-II bursts characteristics: starting frequency (P∼4%), drift rate (P∼1%), and ending frequency (P∼6%). The delay time analysis of DH-type-II start and flare onset times shows that the time lags are longer in AF-CME events than in BF-CME events (P≪1%). From the above results, the AF-CMEs which are associated with DH-type-II bursts are found to be more energetic, associated with long duration flares and DH-type-IIs of lower ending frequencies.  相似文献

About half of the lunar meteorites in our collections are feldspathic breccias. Acquiring geochronologic information from these breccias is challenging due to their low radioactive-element contents and their often polymict nature. We used high-spatial-resolution (5 μm) NanoSIMS (nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometry) U-Pb dating technique to date micro-zircons in the lunar feldspathic meteorites Dhofar 1528 and Dhofar 1627. Three NanoSIMS dating spots of two zircon grains from Dhofar 1528 show a discordia with an upper intercept at 4354 ± 76 Ma and a lower intercept at 332 ± 1407 Ma (2σ, MSWD = 0.01, p = 0.91). Three spots of two zircon grains in Dhofar 1627 define a discordia with an upper intercept at 3948 ± 30 Ma and a lower intercept at 691 ± 831 Ma (2σ, MSWD = 0.40, p = 0.53). Both samples likely experienced shock metamorphism caused by impacts. Based on the clastic nature, lack of recrystallization and the consistent U-Pb and Pb-Pb dates of the zircons in Dhofar 1528, the U-Pb date of 4354 Ma is interpreted as the crystallization age of its Mg-suite igneous precursor. Some of the Dhofar 1627 zircons show poikilitic texture, a crystallization from the matrix impact melt, so the U-Pb date of 3948 Ma corresponds to an impact event, likely the Imbrium basin-forming event. These data are the first radiometric ages for these two meteorites and demonstrate that in situ (high spatial resolution) U-Pb dating has potential for extracting geochronological information about igneous activities and impact events from lunar feldspathic and polymict breccias.  相似文献

The distribution of projected linear sizes of double radio sources is derived in an intrinsically-symmetric model in which the hotspots move away from the parent object at speedv before fading at timeT after their simultaneous origin. This is applied to a sample of doubles, separating the two asymmetry types closer-hotspot-brighter (yes-type) and closer-hotspot-fainter (no-type). Along with the arm-ratio distributions for the two classes, no-doubles very roughly indicatev0.3c, but no consistent value can be found for yes-doubles. A possible generalization of the model is suggested to allow different expansion speeds for different sources (though still retaining the intrinsic bilateral symmetry). Other effects that could be included in the model are also indicated.  相似文献

A mechanism of damped oscillations of a coronal loop is investigated. The loop is treated as a thin toroidal flux rope with two stationary photospheric footpoints, carrying both toroidal and poloidal currents. The forces and the flux-rope dynamics are described within the framework of ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). The main features of the theory are the following: i) Oscillatory motions are determined by the Lorentz force that acts on curved current-carrying plasma structures and ii) damping is caused by drag that provides the momentum coupling between the flux rope and the ambient coronal plasma. The oscillation is restricted to the vertical plane of the flux rope. The initial equilibrium flux rope is set into oscillation by a pulse of upflow of the ambient plasma. The theory is applied to two events of oscillating loops observed by the Transition Region and Coronal Explorer (TRACE). It is shown that the Lorentz force and drag with a reasonable value of the coupling coefficient (c d ) and without anomalous dissipation are able to accurately account for the observed damped oscillations. The analysis shows that the variations in the observed intensity can be explained by the minor radial expansion and contraction. For the two events, the values of the drag coefficient consistent with the observed damping times are in the range c d ≈2 – 5, with specific values being dependent on parameters such as the loop density, ambient magnetic field, and the loop geometry. This range is consistent with a previous MHD simulation study and with values used to reproduce the observed trajectories of coronal mass ejections (CMEs).  相似文献

We present measurements of the altitude and eastward velocity component of mesospheric clouds in 35 imaging sequences acquired by the Mars Odyssey (ODY) spacecraft’s Thermal Emission Imaging System visible imaging subsystem (THEMIS-VIS). We measure altitude by using the parallax drift of high-altitude features, and the velocity by exploiting the time delay in the THEMIS-VIS imaging sequence. We observe two distinct classes of mesospheric clouds: equatorial mesospheric clouds observed between 0° and 180° Ls; and northern mid-latitude clouds observed only in twilight in the 200–300° Ls period. The equatorial mesospheric clouds are quite rare in the THEMIS-VIS data set. We have detected them in only five imaging sequences, out of a total of 2048 multi-band equatorial imaging sequences. All five fall between 20° south and 0° latitude, and between 260° and 295° east longitude. The mid-latitude mesospheric clouds are apparently much more common; for these we find 30 examples out of 210 northern winter mid-latitude twilight imaging sequences. The observed mid-latitude clouds are found, with only one exception, in the Acidalia region, but this is quite likely an artifact of the pattern of THEMIS-VIS image targeting. Comparing our THEMIS-VIS images with daily global maps generated from Mars Orbiter Camera Wide Angle (MOC-WA) images, we find some evidence that some mid-latitude mesospheric cloud features correspond to cloud features commonly observed by MOC-WA. Comparing the velocity of our mesospheric clouds with a GCM, we find good agreement for the northern mid-latitude class, but also find that the GCM fails to match the strong easterly winds measured for the equatorial clouds.Applying a simple radiative transfer model to some of the equatorial mesospheric clouds, we find good model fits in two different imaging sequences. By using the observed radiance contrast between cloud and cloud-free regions at multiple visible-band wavelengths, these fits simultaneously constrain the optical depths and particles sizes of the clouds. The particle sizes are constrained primarily by the relative contrasts at the available wavelengths, and are found to be quite different in the two imaging sequences: reff = 0.1 μm and reff = 1.5 μm. The optical depths (constrained by the absolute contrasts) are substantial: 0.22 and 0.5, respectively. These optical depths imply a mass density that greatly exceeds the saturated mass density of water vapor at mesospheric temperatures, and so the aerosol particles are probably composed mainly of CO2 ice. Our simple radiative transfer model is not applicable to twilight, when the mid-latitude mesospheric clouds were observed, and so we leave the properties of these clouds as a question for further work.  相似文献

Sinusoidal variations in Johnson'sB-band of the flare star EV Lac have been confirmed at its quiet state luminosity. The cycle lengths are more than one hour and less than two hours with amplitudes varying from 0 . m 105 to 0 . m 306. These registered cycles have agreed with cycles detected by Mavridis and Varvoglis (1990) and Mavridis (1990). In the same time, the cycles have confirmed the light variation detection in Johnson'sV-band in the same flare star by Pettersen (1980) with a cyclic period equals about 4 . d 378 and an amplitude of about 0 . m 07. Our net results confirm, to some extent, the presence of active region(s) as an origin of stellar flare phenomenon of UV Ceti type flare stars. We can cautiously say that the solar and stellar flare phenomenon have a similar origin.  相似文献

This expository paper gathers some of the results obtained by the author in recent works in collaboration with Davide Ferrario and Vivina Barutello, focusing on the periodic n-body problem from the perspective of the calculus of variations and minimax theory. These researches were aimed at developing a systematic variational approach to the equivariant periodic n-body problem in the two and three-dimensional space. The purpose of this paper is to expose the main problems and achievements of this approach. The material here was exposed in the talk that given at the Meeting CELMEC IV promoted by SIMCA (Società italiana di Meccanica Celeste).  相似文献

Using Magellan radar images of the Venera and Vega landing-site regions, we carried out a photogeologic analysis and mapping of these regions, the soil composition of which was earlier analyzed by the spacecraft of these series. All these landing-site regions are shown to possess a similar set of geologic situations, which are typical of the planet as a whole, and a similar sequence of geologic evolution. Judging by the results of mapping, a geochemically advanced material analyzed at the Venera-8 landing site appears to be a complex of shield plains (Psh). Tholeiitic compositions obtained by Venera-9/10 and Vega-1/2 probably represent the unit of plains with wrinkle ridges (Pwr), which is most common on Venus. The material of tholeiitic composition analyzed by Venera-14 is likely to be the unit of relatively young lobate plains (Pl).  相似文献

In this paper we first emphasize why it is important to know the successive zonal harmonics of the Sun's figure with high accuracy: mainly fundamental astrometry, helioseismology, planetary motions and relativistic effects. Then we briefly comment why the Sun appears oblate, going back to primitive definitions in order to underline some discrepancies in theories and to emphasize again the relevant hypotheses. We propose a new theoretical approach entirely based on an expansion in terms of Legendre's functions, including the differential rotation of the Sun at the surface. This permits linking the two first spherical harmonic coefficients (J 2 and J 4) with the geometric parameters that can be measured on the Sun (equatorial and polar radii). We emphasize the difficulties in inferring gravitational oblateness from visual measurements of the geometric oblateness, and more generally a dynamical flattening. Results are given for different observed rotational laws. It is shown that the surface oblateness is surely upper bounded by 11 milliarcsecond. As a consequence of the observed surface and sub-surface differential rotation laws, we deduce a measure of the two first gravitational harmonics, the quadrupole and the octopole moment of the Sun: J 2=−(6.13±2.52)×10−7 if all observed data are taken into account, and respectively, J 2=−(6.84±3.75)×10−7 if only sunspot data are considered, and J 2=−(3.49±1.86)×10−7 in the case of helioseismic data alone. The value deduced from all available data for the octopole is: J 4=(2.8±2.1)×10−12. These values are compared to some others found in the literature. In an effort to understand the nature of almost periodic orbits in the n-body problem (for all time t) we look first to the more basic question of the oscillatory nature of solutions of this problem (on a half-line, usually taken as R +). Intimately related to this is the notion of a conjugate point(due to A. Wintner) of a solution. Specifically, by rewriting the mass unrestricted general problem of n-bodies in a symmetric form we prove that in the gravitational Newtonian n-body problem with collisionless motions there exists arbitrarily large conjugate points in the case of arbitrary (positive) masses whenever the cube of the reciprocal of at least one of the mutual distances is not integrable at infinity. The implication of this result is that there are possibly many Wintner oscillatorysolutions in these cases (some of which may or may not be almost periodic). As a consequence, we obtain sufficient conditions for all continuable solutions (to infinity) to be either unbounded or to allow for near misses (at infinity). The results also apply to potentials other than Newtonian ones. Our techniques are drawn from results in systems oscillation theory and are applicable to more general situations. The multi-wavelength analysis is performed on a flare on September 9, 2002 with data of Owens Valley Solar Arrays (OVSA), Big Bear Solar Observatory (BBSO), Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI), and Extreme UV Imager Telescope (EIT), and The Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) on board of the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). The radio sources at 4.8 and 6.2 GHz located in the intersection of two flaring loops at 195 of SOHO/EIT respectively with two dipole magnetic fields of SOHO/MDI, in which one EIT loop was coincident with an X-ray loop of RHESSI at 12–25 keV, and two Hαbright kernels a1 and a2 of BBSO, respectively at the two footpoints of this loop; the second EIT loop connected another two Hαkernels b1 and b2 and radio sources at 7.8 and 8.2 GHz of OVSA. The maximum phase of microwave bursts was evidently later than that of hard X-ray bursts and Hαkernels a1 and a2, but consistent with that of Hαkernels b1 and b2. Moreover, the flare may be triggered by the interaction of the two flaring loops, which is suggested by the cross-correlation of radio, optical, and X-ray light curves of a common quasi-periodic oscillation in the rising phase, as well as two peaks at about 7 and 9 GHz of the microwave spectra at the peak times of the oscillation, while the bi-directional time delays at two reversal frequencies respectively at 7.8 and 9.4 GHz (similar to the peak frequencies of the microwave spectra) may indicate two reconnection sites at different coronal levels. The microwave and hard X-ray footpoint sources located in different EUV and optical loops may be explained by different magnetic field strength and the pitch angle distribution of nonthermal electrons in these two loops.  相似文献

As has been recognized recently, data on size (frequency) distributions for different sets of solar flare parameters are very helpful in modeling flare and acceleration processes. Relying upon a new arising paradigm of particle acceleration at different sources at/near the Sun (flares, shock waves, etc.), in this paper, we analyze long-term data (1955–1996) from several Catalogues of Solar Proton Events (SPEs). Above 1 p.f.u. (proton cm–2 s–1 sr–1) of the >10 MeV protons, we have separated in all 320 events associated with identified sources (flares). Then, within this database of flare-related events, a second group (a subgroup) has been formed of the 159 events, additionally having a certain or probable sudden storm commencement (SSC) association (SSC-related events). The basic result is that the power-law slope of size distribution for the 320 flare-related events at integral energy intensities is about 1.37 ± 0.05 over the entire range of the proton intensities, from 1.0 to 105 p.f.u. This slope is in general agreement with earlier analyses of integral energy distributions, but steeper than that for differential energy distributions. A second result is that the SSC-associated events have a double power-law distribution with two different exponents, near 1.00 ± 0.04 and 1.53 ± 0.03 below and above 103 p.f.u., respectively. The longitude distributions of the proper sources for these two groups display different behaviour suggesting different origins of the two particle populations. A certain difference was also found to exist in the slopes of integral size distributions at >10 MeV and >500 MeV. This may point to a dependence of slope on the proton energy under consideration.  相似文献

Electromagnetic instabilities in high-β plasmas, where β is the ratio of the kinetic plasma energy to the magnetic energy, have a broad range of astrophysical applications. The presence of temperature anisotropies T /T >1 (where and denote directions relative to the background magnetic field) in solar flares and the solar wind is sustained by the observations and robust acceleration mechanisms that heat plasma particles in the parallel direction. The surplus of parallel kinetic energy can excite either the Weibel-like instability (WI) of the ordinary mode perpendicular to the magnetic field or the firehose instability (FHI) of the circularly polarized waves at parallel propagation. The interplay of these two instabilities is examined. The growth rates and the thresholds provided by the kinetic Vlasov – Maxwell theory are compared. The WI is the fastest growing one with a growth rate that is several orders of magnitude larger than that of the FHI. These instabilities are however inhibited by the ambient magnetic field by introducing a temperature anisotropy threshold. The WI admits a larger anisotropy threshold, so that, under this threshold, the FHI remains the principal mechanism of relaxation. The criteria provided here by describing the interplay of the WI and FHI are relevant for the existence of these two instabilities in any space plasma system characterized by an excess of parallel kinetic energy.  相似文献
