The Medium Earth Orbit region is the home of the navigation constellations. It is shown how the orbits of these constellations of satellites are strongly affected by the so-called inclination dependent luni-solar resonances. The analytical theory of these resonances is recalled and a large set of numerical integrations is used to investigate the stability of the orbits of the constellations over very long time spans. The stability issue is important in the definition of possible disposal strategies for the constellation spacecraft, after their end-of-life. Two possible disposal strategies are envisaged involving either stable or unstable orbits (from the eccentricity growth point of view). In particular it is shown how, to have disposal orbits with moderately short lifetime (of the orders of 40–50 years), a very large disposal maneuver would be required to rise the inital eccentricity to values above ~ 0.3.  相似文献

Taken together, evidence from east Greenland's mountain moraines and results from atmospheric models appear to provide the answer to a question which has long dogged abrupt climate change research: namely, how were impacts of the Younger Dryas (YD), Dansgaard–Oeschger (D–O) and Heinrich (H) events transmitted so quickly and efficiently throughout the northern hemisphere and tropics? The answer appears to lie in extensive winter sea ice formation which created Siberian-like conditions in the regions surrounding the northern Atlantic. Not only would this account for the ultra cold conditions in the north, but, as suggested by models, it would have pushed the tropical rain belt southward and weakened the monsoons. The requisite abrupt changes in the extent of sea ice cover are of course best explained by the turning on and turning off of the Atlantic's conveyor circulation.  相似文献

Stars form through the gravitational collapse of molecular cloud cores.Before collapsing,the cores are supported by thermal pressure and turbulent motions.A question of critical importance for the understanding of star formation is how to observationally discern whether a core has already initiated gravitational collapse or is still in hydrostatic balance.The canonical method to identify gravitational collapse is based on the observed radial density profile,which would change from Bonnor-Ebert type toward power laws as the core collapses.In practice,due to the projection effect,the resolution limit and other caveats,it has been difficult to directly reveal the dynamical status of cores,particularly in massive star forming regions.We here propose a novel,straightforward diagnostic,namely,the collapsing index(CI),which can be modeled and calculated based on the radial profile of the line width of dense gas.A meaningful measurement of CI requires spatially and spectrally resolved images of optically thin and chemically stable dense gas tracers.ALMA observations are making such data sets increasingly available for massive star forming regions.Applying our method to one of the deepest dense-gas spectral images ever taken toward such a region,namely,the Orion molecular cloud,we detect the dynamical status of selected cores.We observationally distinguished a collapsing core in a massive star forming region from a hydrostatical one.Our approach would help significantly improve our understanding of the interaction between gravity and turbulence within molecular cloud cores in the process of star formation.  相似文献

We continue former work on the modeling of potential effects of Gamma Ray Bursts on Phanerozoic Earth. We focus on global biospheric effects of ozone depletion and model the spectral reduction of light by NO2 formed in the stratosphere. We also illustrate the current complexities involved in the prediction of how terrestrial ecosystems would respond to this kind of burst. We conclude that more biological field and laboratory data are needed to reach even moderate accuracy in this modeling.  相似文献

The Taiwan Oscillation Network (TON) is a ground-based network to measure solar intensity oscillations to study the internal structure of the Sun. K-line full-disk images of 1000 pixels diameter are taken at a rate of one image per minute. Such data would provide information onp-modes withl as high as 1000. The TON will consist of six identical telescope systems at proper longitudes around the world. Three telescope systems have been installed at Teide Observatory (Tenerife), Huairou Solar Observing Station (near Beijing), and Big Bear Solar Observatory (California). The telescopes at these three sites have been taking data simultaneously since October of 1994. Anl – v diagram derived from 512 images is included to show the quality of the data.  相似文献

The Hapke (Hapke, B. [1981]. J. Geophys. Res. 86, 3039-3054) photometric model and its modifications are widely used to characterize telescopic, spacecraft, and laboratory observations of the bidirectional reflectance of particulate surfaces. Following work and methods laid out in a companion paper (Helfenstein, P., Shepard, M.K. [2011]. Icarus, in press), we deconstruct the Hapke model and, separating all empirical and ad hoc parameters (opposition surge, particle phase function, surface roughness), combine them into a single parameter called the surface phase function, F(α). We illustrate how to extract this function from scattering data sets acquired with the Bloomsburg University Goniometer (BUG). We show how this method can be used to rapidly and accurately characterize bidirectional reflectance data sets from laboratory and spacecraft measurements, often giving better fits to the data. We examine samples with strong color contrasts in different wavelengths. This allows us to examine the exact same surface, changing only the albedo to investigate how the amplitude and the detailed shape of the surface phase function might systematically depend on wavelength and albedo. We also examine the changes in scattering behavior that result when samples are compacted and find the surface phase function and single scattering albedo to be significantly changed. We suggest that these observations support the hypothesis that much of the scattering behavior attributed to the single particle phase function is instead cause by the surface micro-structure.  相似文献

We examine the possibility that recent data on cosmic ray anisotropies presented by the AGASA group may lead to the conclusion that our Galactic Center is a major source of the highest energy cosmic rays in our galaxy. We discuss how such a source would contribute to the magnitude and directional properties of the observed flux when measured against a background of extragalactic cosmic rays. We do this using the results of previous propagation calculations and our own more recent calculations which are specifically for a Galactic Center source.We find that the AGASA data can indeed be plausibly interpreted in this way and also that an argument can be made that the Galactic Center has the appropriate physical properties for acceleration to energies of the order of 1018 eV. We show that data from the SUGAR array are compatible with the AGASA result.  相似文献

To make detection andfollow-up observations of near-earth asteroids (NEOs), a new project tobuild 0.5 m and 1.0 m telescopes has been started with a support of theScience and Technology Agency in Japan. These are the first telescopesdesigned from its beginning to dedicate specifically to the NEOobservations and are expected to be one of the most efficient telescopesfor the NEO observations.It is expected to obtain several ten giga-bytedata per one clear night. Such large numbers of data are able to sharewith international groups. These sharing activities will contribute 1)for us to obtain data of asteroid with the lowest level of signal, and2) for those groups to study how to reduce astronomical data.  相似文献

Instrumentation built to record seeing data automatically via image motion measurements of bright stars in small telescopes is described. The centroid of the star image is found 256 times s-1 in one dimension and is analyzed on-line. The device works over a range of FWHM values as would be seen through a large telescope between <0.1 and 3.0 arcsec. The first results for two identical instruments set up at two locations near the duPont Telescope at Las Campanas Observatory are reported. For a total of 61 nights of data (450 h at each site), the median seeing is 0.6 arcsec, with quartiles at 0.4 and 0.8 arcsec. These are FWHM values referred to 5000 Å at the zenith. So far, the two sites are indistinguishable on average.  相似文献

The observed characteristics of pulsars have been considered with respect to how they would affect cosmic rays if pulsars are the sources of cosmic radiation. Particular attention was given to the various time properties of suggested acceleration mechanisms. They are divided into three general cases: (a) constant with time, (b) sudden injections at discrete times, (c) slowly varying with time. In each case the possibility of either a monoenergetic or a power law injection spectrum with respect to energy was taken into account.  相似文献

One may construct complete planetary and lunar ephemerides, referred to the equator and dynamical equinox of some epoch, strictly from ranging data alone. Such an ephemeris would be completely independent from any optical data and therefore independent of any stellar catalogue. By using such an ephemeris to then analyse optical observations, one could theoretically derive many of the pertinent features of the catalogue system to which the optical observations are referred. Such features include the equinox offset, equinox motion and systematic proper motion errors. In practice, the optical observations are used in the fitting process, but essentially the same determinations may be made.This paper presents estimates of the equinox offset and equinox motion of the FK4 as determined by the ephemeris fitting process and compares them with corresponding determinations by Fricke. No significant differences are found. Further, it is indicated how one may also estimate a value for precession and the value of the obliquity from the ephemerides. These' values are also compared with the presently adopted ones.  相似文献

High-resolution imaging acquired with the Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous Shoemaker (NEAR Shoemaker) spacecraft is used to elucidate the spectral properties and spatial distribution of color units on Asteroid 433 Eros. Previous workers mapped four distinct types of color units on the surface (bright streaks, dark soils, ponded materials, average regolith). These units exhibit albedo and color boundaries but there is no evidence to indicate they represent distinct rock types. Rather the units are thought to show evidence of complex regolith transport and sorting processes. Here we report the results of a comprehensive study of all viable color MultiSpectral Imager (MSI) data to identify and characterize the distribution and nature of color units across the whole asteroid. Due to a spacecraft upset that resulted in contamination of the MSI optics, color images are affected with a scattered light problem that hampers interpretation of subtle color contrasts, even after a rigorous remediation. To constrain interpretations of the MSI color data we characterize this residual scattered light and demonstrate how complete correction would affect derived color ratios. Results of our comprehensive study are consistent with previous mapping—confirming that bright streaks, average regolith and dark soils fall on a mixing line, consistent with space weathering effects. We find that the ponded deposits do not fall on this putative mixing line. The color and reflectance of the ponded deposits are consistent with some combination of compositional, grain size and maturity variations from the average regolith. Additionally we show that spectral separation of the four units on ratio plots would only increase with full removal of residual scattered light, especially for features that are small in terms of pixels. Global analysis of the Eros color units illustrates complex regolith processes and grain sorting that may hold clues to understanding space weathering processes and the link between asteroids and meteorites.  相似文献

We would like to comment on a recent paper by Sturrock et al. (2014) in which the authors analyze decay data acquired by an ionization chamber in our institute. They interpret the variations in the data as solar-driven changes in the decay rates of the radionuclides under study. In brief we would like to discuss and elucidate the properties and the origin of the data used by the authors and explain why these data are not a sound basis for claiming evidence for new physics.  相似文献

The mechanisms that could possibly heat the corona are briefly reviewed with emphasis on their observability. Observing enhanced wave flux at footpoints of active regions would confirm wave heating. Observation of nonthermal electrons in tiny coronal events (nanoflares) would confirm dissipation of current sheets. Presence of large scale flows in coronal arcades would underline the importance of turbulent resistivity for coronal heating. A comparison of HeI absorption in quiet and active regions demonstrates the difficulty of interpreting data that connect chromospheric dynamics with coronal heating. Finally, the implications of the search for observations of coronal heating processes are mentioned.  相似文献

The Hinode satellite (formerly Solar-B) of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency’s Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS/JAXA) was successfully launched in September 2006. As the successor to the Yohkoh mission, it aims to understand how magnetic energy gets transferred from the photosphere to the upper atmosphere and results in explosive energy releases. Hinode is an observatory style mission, with all the instruments being designed and built to work together to address the science aims. There are three instruments onboard: the Solar Optical Telescope (SOT), the EUV Imaging Spectrometer (EIS), and the X-Ray Telescope (XRT). This paper provides an overview of the mission, detailing the satellite, the scientific payload, and operations. Impact crater populations help us to understand solar system dynamics, planetary surface histories, and surface modification processes. A single previous effort to standardize how crater data are displayed in graphs, tables, and archives was in a 1978 NASA report by the Crater Analysis Techniques Working Group, published in 1979 in Icarus. The report had a significant lasting effect, but later decades brought major advances in statistical and computer sciences while the crater field has remained fairly stagnant. In this new work, we revisit the fundamental techniques for displaying and analyzing crater population data and demonstrate better statistical methods that can be used. Specifically, we address (1) how crater size-frequency distributions (SFDs) are constructed, (2) how error bars are assigned to SFDs, and (3) how SFDs are fit to power-laws and other models. We show how the new methods yield results similar to those of previous techniques in that the SFDs have familiar shapes but better account for multiple sources of uncertainty. We also recommend graphic, display, and archiving methods that reflect computers’ capabilities and fulfill NASA's current requirements for Data Management Plans.  相似文献

The response of natural vegetation to climate change is of global concern. In this research, an aggregated Holdridge Life Zone System was used to study the possible response of life zones in China under doubled atmospheric CO2 concentration with the input climatic parameters at 0.5×0.5° resolution of longitude and latitude from NCAR regional climate model 2 (RegCM2) coupled with the CSIRO global climate model. The results indicate that the latitudinal distribution of life zones would become irregular because of the complicated climate change. In particular, new life zones, such as subtropical desert (SD), tropical desert (TDE) and tropical thorn woodland (TTW), would appear. Subtropical evergreen broadleaved forest (SEBF), tropical rainforest and monsoon forest (TRF), SD, TDE and TTW zones would appear in the northeastern China. Cool-temperate mixed coniferous and broadleaved forest (CMC) and warm-temperate deciduous broadleaved forest (WDBF) zones would appear at latitudes 25–35°N. The temperate desert (TD) in the western China would become Tibetan high-cold plateau (THP), SEBF, WDBF and temperate steppe (TS), and a large part of THP would be replaced by TRF, TDE, SEBF, TS and TTW. The relative area (distribution area/total terrestrial area) of CMC, TRF, TDE and TTW zone would increase about 3%, 21%, 3% and 6%, respectively. However, the relative area of SEBF, TS, TD and THP would decrease about 5%, 3%, 19% and 4%, respectively. In all, the relative area of forests (CCF, CMC, WDBF, SEBF, TRF) would increase about 15%, but the relative area of desert (TD, SD, TDE, and TTW) and THP would decrease about 9% and 4%, respectively. Therefore, responses of different life zones in China to climate change would be dramatic, and nationwide corridors should be considered for the conservation of migrating species under climate change.  相似文献

It has been argued, for a number of reasons, that the next generation radio telescope should be a multi-element interferometer with a collecting area of about 1 km2. The remaining parameters of such an instrument – frequency range, angular resolution, instantaneous bandwidth, etc. – will be science driven. The requirements for propagation studies are briefly discussed, and it is pointed out how variable-source confusion may differ from the normal variety. Finally, the Dutch project to achieve a large collecting area using adaptive arrays of active antennas is described. A systematic approach has been adopted, with the construction of arrays of increasing complexity to test design features at each state. Recently, development of a low frequency array (LOFAR) has become an additional option. It would facilitate tests of some of the larger instrument's features, and provide real data on the influence of the ionosphere and interfering sources.
