Determination of the actual mercury concentration in Mediterranean basin seawater was achieved by means of an instrument based on fluorescence spectrometry developed for this purpose, during a field study aboard the oceanographic ship “L.F. Marsili”, between August 1980 and May 1982.Dissolved ·total’ and ·reactive’ mercury and mercury associated with particulate matter were determined on surface and subsurface waters in the Tyrrhenian Sea from La Spezia to Sicily.Concentrations in the range 1.4–19.7 ng l−1 for ·total dissolved mercury’, 0.5–5.9 ng l−1 for ·reactive dissolved mercury’ and 0.3–8.0 ng l−1 for mercury associated with the particulate matter, were measured on surface and subsurface waters in the Tyrrhenian Sea from La Spezia to Sicily.Even if the mean value of the total mercury concentration (dissolved + particulate) was found to be about twice as high as those observed for the oceans, the difference does not seem to be as high as predicted by the model proposed by Buffoni and co-workers to explain the large difference of mercury levels between tunas caught, respectively, in the Mediterranean and in the Oceans.  相似文献

Mass balance and sources of mercury in Tokyo Bay   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The mass balance and sources of mercury in Tokyo Bay were investigated on the basis of observations from December 2003 to January 2005. Estimated input terms included river discharge (70 kg yr−1) and atmospheric deposition (37 kg yr−1), and output terms were evasion (49 kg yr−1), export (13 kg yr−1) and sedimentation (495 kg yr−1). Thus, the outputs (557 kg yr−1) considerably exceeded the inputs (107 kg yr−1). In addition, the imbalance between the inputs and outputs of mercury was much larger than that of other trace metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn), which suggests that there are other major inputs of mercury to Tokyo Bay. The mercury concentrations in rivers correlated significantly with the concentrations of Al and Fe, major components of soil. In Japan, large amounts of organomercurous fungicides (about 2500 tons as Hg) were used extensively in fields in the past, and most of the mercury was retained in the soil. In this study, the mercury concentration in rivers was measured primarily in ordinary runoff. These observations lead to the hypothesis that field soil discharged into stormwater runoff is a major source of mercury in Tokyo Bay. As a preliminary approach to validating this hypothesis, we measured the concentrations of mercury and other trace metals in river water during a typhoon. The mercury concentrations in stormwater runoff increased to 16–50 times the mean value in ordinary runoff, which is much higher than the increases for other metals. This tends to support the hypothesis.  相似文献

Role of mangrove in mercury cycling and removal in the Jiulong Estuary   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Baseline of mercury in mangrove swamp The mercury content in sediments in the Jiulong Estuary was determined in 1984 and 1985(Table 1). The highest content of mercury in sediments (300×10~(-9)) was found in Ditou, contrast-ing strongly with the low content of 36×10~(-9) in Port Dongzhai in the Hainan Island. Tab1e 1 showsthat the average content of mercury in sediments in the Jiulong Estuary is 140×10~(-9) and the averageof four areas is 72×10~(-9). This value means that these areas have not been heavily contaminated by  相似文献

Horizontal and vertical distributions of mercury were determined in seawater in Minamata Bay and Yatsushiro Sea. The concentrations of total and particulate mercury respectively ranged from 56–285 ng l–1 and 2.1–506 ng l–1. They were both highest in the inner most part of Minamata Bay where the sediment was most heavily polluted, and decreased with increasing distance from there. Vertically, an evident increase in concentration was observed near the bottom. A good agreement was found between the mercury content in suspended matter and that in fine sediment particles. These facts show that the particulate mercury is supplied mostly from the bottom sediment, and that it is spreading offshore with dispersing in seawater. This process would eventually result in the pollution of sediment in Yatsushiro Sea.  相似文献

Due to the lack of knowledge regarding annual bioaccumulation rates in estuarine and marine fauna, the main aim of this work was to study the annual mercury bioaccumulation in the well-documented bivalve species Scrobicularia plana along a human induced mercury gradient in the Ria de Aveiro coastal lagoon (Portugal) and in a nearby, non-polluted system (Mondego estuary), parallel to the risks associated with its consumption by humans.Minimum total mercury concentration was as low as 0.019 mg kg−1 (wwt) in 4+ year old organisms in the reference site, where a significant negative correlation (p < 0.05) was found between total mercury concentrations and size, resulting in negative bioaccumulation rates (detoxification). On the other hand, values reached 1.8 mg kg−1 (wwt) in 3+ year old bivalves from the most contaminated area, where a strong positive correlation with size was found (p < 0.01) and annual bioaccumulation rates were as high as 0.25 mg kg−1 yr−1. Annual bioaccumulation rates were highly correlated with suspended particulate matter mercury concentrations. Even though the levels of organic mercury contents increased parallel to the contamination gradient, at each sampling station, no increment was found with age, which corresponded to a decrease in organic mercury percentage with age.In terms of ecological management and public health, the ratio of 0.01 consistently found between Scrobicularia plana annual mercury accumulation rates and SPM mercury levels for most sites may permit to roughly estimate S. plana contamination of commercial sized individuals (>2.5 cm) and, if verified and confirmed in other systems, be used as a simple management tool.  相似文献

Using 203HgCl2 as a tracer, uptake and combination of inorganic mercury in Tilapia mossambica (petres) and its transfer between different tissues of the fish were studied. The results demonstrate that gill is the main tissue uptaking mercury directly from seawater and that the mercury in gill, skin, digestive tube and fin would be transferred to the other tissues. The result of gel chromatography with Sephadex G-75 shows that most of mercury in gill filaments, liver, and digestive tube are bound in high molecules (MW-70000) and not in metallothionein, but in kidney and bile mercury binding proteins are similar to metallothionein and are accounted for up to 60% and 46% respectively.  相似文献

Seventy percent of 342 seawater samples collected in the Bering Sea, North and South Pacific, Japan Sea, East and South China Seas, and Indian Ocean had concentrations of “total” mercury ranging from 3 to 6 ng Hg l?1 with an arithmetic mean of 5.3 ng l?1 and a geometric mean of 5.0 ng l?1. In some cases, a higher concentration was observed at the surface, at the halocline or thermocline, or in the bottom water. But in general, there was no consistent correlation between mercury concentration and depth, except for a statistical tendency for mercury concentration to be slightly higher in the surface water. This tendency suggests that mercury in the ocean is supplied from the atmosphere by rain washout. The latitudinal variation of surface mercury concentrations showed that the maximum concentration at each latitude decreased from 40°N to 30°S. This variation provides evidence that atmospheric mercury is emitted mainly from continental areas naturally or anthropogenically.  相似文献

In Tokyo Bay the concentrations of dissolved gaseous mercury (DGM) in the surface seawater and total gaseous mercury (TGM) over the sea were measured during December 2003, October 2004 and January 2005. Based on these data, the evasional fluxes of mercury from the sea surface were estimated using a gas exchange model. In addition, an automatic wet and dry deposition sampler was used to measure the wet and dry depositional fluxes of mercury from December 2003 to November 2004 at three locations in and near Tokyo Bay. The results indicate that the average DGM and TGM levels of seven locations are 52 ± 26 ng m−3 and 1.9 ± 0.6 ng m−3, respectively, which shows that the surface seawater in Tokyo Bay is supersaturated with gaseous mercury, leading to an average mercury evasional flux of 140 ± 120 ng m−2d−1. On the other hand, the annual average wet and dry depositional fluxes of mercury at three locations were 19 ± 3 μg m−2yr−1 and 20 ± 9 μg m−2yr−1, respectively. These depositional fluxes correspond to the daily average total depositional flux of 110 ± 20 ng m−2d−1. Thus, it is suggested that in Tokyo Bay, the evasional fluxes of mercury are comparable to the depositional fluxes.  相似文献

Individual surface-active particles (SAP) in aqueous environmental samples can be characterized through their coalescence at a model hydrophobic interface. Each coalescence event is recorded as an electrical signal. As the electrical signal is a current transient (time on a millisecond scale), the sequence of fast processes leading to the formation of a condensed film can be studied from the moment of first attachment at the interface. In the stratified Krka Estuary, SAP are present in maximum concentrations (107−5 × 108 particles l−1 min the size range > 1 μm) at the halocline (freshwater-seawater interface). This highly surface-active fraction of particulate organic matter can be viewed as oily droplets. SAP are fluid, and are readily transformed at interfaces to films of molecular thickness (surface area per particle is in the range 10−5–10−2 cm2).Comparison of response of individual SAP with model particles, and the frequency of their appearance in estuarine samples, shows that a majority of estuarine SAP has, in terms of viscosity and film permeability, the properties of oleic acid. A significant fraction of SAP have more rigid structures, comparable to moleic acid + cholesterol model particles. A small fraction ( > 1%) behaves as phytoplankton cells with fluid outer membranes. We have also presented evidence for a strong interaction between elemental mercury and SAP, which is not sensitive to the molecular structure of the organic phase. The puzzling accumulation of mercury at the halocline of the Krka Estuary may be regarded as the result of interaction of elemental mercury with SAP.  相似文献

Using a refined two-stage gold amalgamation preconcentration technique in conjunction with cold vapor atomic absorption (CVAA) detection, mercury in various Pacific Northwest coastal waters has been determined. Through the use of extremely clean reagents and special handling techniques, the blank has been reduced and reproducibility greatly improved for both “easily reducible mercury” and “total mercury”.Samples of unfiltered water, taken at the surface, as well as at 10 m, 100 m, and 175 m have all yielded “easily reducible mercury” at between 0.1 and 0.5 ng l?1, and “total mercury” between 0.2 and 1.0 ng l?1. Variability within replicate field samples is less than 10%, although variations of greater than 100% may be seen over a period of hours in Sequim Bay.  相似文献

The annual total and organic mercury bioaccumulation pattern of Scrobicularia plana and Hediste diversicolor was assessed to evaluate the potential mercury transfer from contaminated sediments to estuarine food webs. S. plana was found to accumulate more total and organic mercury than H. diversicolor, up to 0.79 mg kg−1 and 0.15 mg kg−1 (wet weight) respectively, with a maximum annual uptake of 0.21 mg kg−1 y−1, while for methylmercury the annual accumulation was similar between species and never exceeded 0.045 mg kg−1 y−1. The higher organic mercury fraction in H. diversicolor is related to the omnivorous diet of this species. Both species increase methylmercury exposure by burrowing activities and uptake in anoxic, methylmercury rich sediment layers. Integration with the annual biological production of each species revealed mercury incorporation rates that reached 28 μg m−2 y−1, and to extract as much as 11.5 g Hg y−1 (of which 95% associated with S. plana) in the 0.4 km2 of the most contaminated area, that can be transferred to higher trophic levels. S. plana is therefore an essential vector in the mercury biomagnification processes, through uptake from contaminated sediments and, by predation, to transfer it to economically important and exploited estuarine species.  相似文献

Mercury accumulation throughout the lifespan of Liza aurata (Risso, 1810) was analysed in four tissues (muscle, gills, liver and brain) in two southern European coastal ecosystems with distinct mercury contamination. Specimens from four to five age classes were captured in two sampling sites in the Ria de Aveiro (Laranjo bay and Mira), a system historically contaminated by industrial mercury, and in one site in the Mondego estuary, assumed as a mercury-free ecosystem. Mercury concentration in all tissues was found to be significantly higher in the Ria de Aveiro (Laranjo bay) compared to the Mondego, in accordance with the environmental contamination (water, sediments and suspended particulate matter). Significant differences inside the Ria de Aveiro (between the Mira and Laranjo bay) were only detected in the liver. This tissue registered the highest levels of mercury (ranging from 0.11 to 4.2 μg g−1) in all sampling sites, followed by muscle, brain, and gills. In all sampling sites and tissues was denoted a mercury dilution pattern along the lifecycle (except in liver at the Mondego, the reference area where the concentrations are always very low). An exponential trend was found in the metal age variation patterns in Laranjo (the most contaminated area) and a linear trend in the Mira and the Mondego (the least contaminated areas). Organic mercury concentration in muscle generally accounted for over 95% of total mercury concentration, and followed the same accumulation pattern of total mercury. This fish species is of lesser importance in mercury transfer to adjacent coastal areas and although the consumption of fish from Laranjo may present some risk for the humans, this risk decreases with fish age/size.  相似文献

To estimate the influence of mercury emitted from submarine fumaroles, the horizontal and vertical distribution of mercury in sediment of Kagoshima Bay was studied. The fumaroles are located in the northern bay head area, and the sediment samples had been taken from 52 points throughout the bay with a gravity core sampler. The core samples obtained were cut at a thickness of 1–2 cm and used for measurements. The total concentration of mercury in surface sediment in the northern and central areas of the bay was 51–679 μg kg− 1 (average 199 μg kg− 1, n = 22) and 23–100 μg kg− 1 (average 55 μg kg− 1, n = 30), respectively. The highest value was obtained in the vicinity of the fumaroles. The mercury concentration in sediment near the fumaroles varied with depth, which may reflect the variation in fumarolic activity. A successive extraction method was applied to the speciation of mercury in the sediment. The results showed that sediment taken in the vicinity of submarine fumaroles contained a higher percentage of mercury bound with organic matter.  相似文献

Embryos of Fundulus heteroclitus in the 4–8 cell stage were exposed nine Hg++ (as mercuric chloride) concentrations from 0 to 100 μg/litre (ppb) for 32 days, 5 days, 2 days and 1 day. All but the chronically (32-day) exposed embryos were allowed to continue development in mercury-free water (20% S) after the exposure period to determine the effect of duration of exposure on three parameters of development. Ninety-six hour survival, total hatching success and per cent incidence of lateral spinal curvature were measured. Only embryos exposed to mercury for a single day showed a significant increase in survival in comparison with embryos exposed for a longer period of time after four days of development. Under all conditions of exposure, survival was reduced at concentrations greater than 40 ppb Hg++. Hatching success of chronically exposed embryos was significantly reduced at concentrations greater than 10 ppb Hg++. Significant increases in total hatchability were effected by reducing the duration of exposure to five days and one day. Of eleutheroembryos emerging following chronic exposure to mercury, increases in the incidence of lateral spinal curvature were noted at all concentrations above 20 ppb Hg++. Significant reductions of this disorder were observed among eleutheroembryos exposed to mercury for 5 days, 2 days or 1 day. Of the three parameters measured, the incidence of lateral spinal curvature and the resulting VH50 value gave a more sensitive evaluation of the embryotoxic effects of Hg++ as mercuric chloride on the estuarine teleost, Fundulus heteroclitus.  相似文献

The Mussel Watch program conducted along the French coasts for the last 20 years indicates that the highest mercury concentrations in the soft tissue of the blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) occur in animals from the eastern part of Seine Bay on the south coast of the English Channel, the “Pays de Caux”. This region is characterized by the presence of intertidal and submarine groundwater discharges, and no particular mercury effluent has been reported in its vicinity. Two groundwater emergence systems in the karstic coastal zone of the Pays de Caux (Etretat and Yport with slow and fast water percolation pathways respectively) were seasonally sampled to study mercury distribution, partitioning and speciation in water. Samples were also collected in the freshwater–seawater mixing zones in order to compare mercury concentrations and speciation between these “subterranean” or “groundwater” estuaries and the adjacent macrotidal Seine estuary, characterized by a high turbidity zone (HTZ). The mercury concentrations in the soft tissue of mussels from the same areas were monitored at the same time. The means of the “dissolved” (< 0.45 μm) mercury concentrations (HgTD) in the groundwater springs were 0.99 ± 0.15 ng l− 1 (n = 18) and 0.44 ± 0.17 ng l− 1 (n = 17) at Etretat and Yport respectively. High HgTD concentrations were associated with strong runoff over short water pathways during storm periods, while low concentrations were associated with long groundwater pathways. Mean particulate mercury concentrations were 0.22 ± 0.05 ng mg− 1 (n = 16) and 0.16 ± 0.10 ng mg− 1 (n = 17) at Etretat and Yport respectively, and decreased with increasing particle concentration probably as a result of dilution by particles from soil erosion. Groundwater mercury speciation was characterized by high reactive-to-total mercury ratios in the dissolved phase (HgRD/HgTD: 44–95%), and very low total monomethylmercury concentrations (MMHg < 8 pg l− 1). The HgTD distributions in the Yport and Etretat mixing zones were similar (overall mean concentration of 0.73 ± 0.21 ng l− 1, n = 43), but higher than those measured in the adjacent industrialized Seine estuary (mean: 0.31 ± 0.11 ng l− 1, n = 67). In the coastal waters along the Pays de Caux dissolved monomethylmercury (MMHgD) concentrations varied from 9.5 to 13.5 pg l− 1 (2 to 8% of the HgTD). Comparable levels were measured in the Seine estuary (range: 12.2– 21.1 pg l−1; 6–12% of the HgTD). These groundwater karstic estuaries seem to be mostly characterized by the higher HgTD and HgRD concentrations than in the adjacent HTZ Seine estuary. While the HTZ of the Seine estuary acts as a dissolved mercury removal system, the low turbid mixing zone of the Pays de Caux receives the dissolved mercury inputs from the groundwater seepage with an apparent Hg transfer from the particulate phase to the “dissolved” phase (< 0.45 μm). In parallel, the soft tissue of mussels collected near the groundwater discharges, at Etretat and Yport, exhibited significantly higher values than those found in the mussel from the mouth of the Seine estuary. We observe that this difference mimics the differences found in the mercury distribution in the water, and argue that the dissolved phase of the groundwater estuaries and coastal particles are significant sources of bioavailable mercury for mussels.  相似文献

Accumulation rules of mercury by blood clam (Arca subcrenata Lishke) from Bohai Gulf have been studied. Mercury concentration in soft parts have been related to those in the environment level on the shore and size of animals have also been considered. Uptake ability of mercury in blood clams is high, with the concentration coefficient 1.8 ×103 Hg contents In its soft part are related to those in seawater and in sediment, the relationship- may be expressed by a dual linear regression equation. The total HE content in blood clam individual is power function of its body weight,Arca subcrenata appears to have potential as an indicator of mercury contamination In BohaiGulf.  相似文献

Species-specific enriched stable isotopes have been used to study mercury transformations (methylation, demethylation and volatilization) in estuarine sediments under different environmental conditions (both biotic and abiotic and oxic and anoxic). These experiments have demonstrated the potential for the isotopically enriched species in combination with highly sensitive measurement methods (ICP MS) to facilitate the study of mercury speciation and reactivity. Sediments (sterilized and nonsterilized) were spiked with both isotopically enriched inorganic (199Hg) and monomethylmercury (MM201Hg) at environmental levels to avoid perturbing the system and incubated under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. The formation of MM199Hg and the degradation of MM201Hg were measured simultaneously during time series experiments by capillary gas chromatography-inductively coupled mass spectrometry. Specific methylation and demethylation rate constants (Km and Kd) were calculated. Results clearly showed that methylmercury levels in sediments are controlled by competing and simultaneous methylation and demethylation reactions. Operating conditions, likely to drastically modify the reactivity of the media, were of primary importance to assess the relative significance of each mechanism. In estuarine sediments, mercury methylation was enhanced under anaerobic nonsterile conditions, whereas other environmental conditions were either less favorable for monomethylmercury production or more effective for its degradation. The production of total gaseous mercury was found to be minimal, although it could be demonstrated that it was related to the fate and transformation of methylmercury.  相似文献

Causes of variation in mobilization of mercury into Black-winged Stilt Himantopus himantopus chicks were studied through analysis of stable isotope ratios of carbon and nitrogen. Blood and breast feathers were collected from chicks in coastal saltpans during successive breeding seasons. Detritus samples and potential prey (macroinvertebrates) were also collected. Total mercury concentrations and stable isotope signatures were measured using atomic absorption spectroscopy and isotope ratio mass spectrometry respectively. Mercury levels in Chironomidae, Corixidae and Hydrophilidae correlated with mercury levels in chick feathers. Differences of δ15N signatures between macroinvertebrate groups indicated that they belong to different trophic levels. δ15N signatures of invertebrates correlated with mercury levels in invertebrates and chicks, but not with δ15N signatures in chicks. Between-group and between-site differences of δ15N signatures and mercury levels in invertebrates suggested that they contribute differently to mercury mobilization into chicks, and their relative contribution depends on prey availability in each site. Inter-site differences in the biomagnification factor reinforced that idea. δ13C signatures in invertebrates marked a larger range of carbon sources than just detritus. Variation of water inflow regime and prey availability may cause between-group and between-site differences of δ13C signatures in prey. Discrepancies between feather and blood for δ13C signatures in Praias-Sado and Vaia suggested that temporal variation of prey availability may be the main factor affecting mercury mobilization into chicks in both those cases, since their water inflow regimes are the same. The lowest levels of δ13C signatures in Vau suggested that water inflow regime may be the main factor in this case, since no discrepancy existed in δ13C signatures between blood and feather.  相似文献

Preliminary measurements of sulfide in seawater using cathodic stripping voltammetry and a hanging mercury drop electrode (HMDE) in batch-mode showed that the sulfide peak decreased rapidly with time. This decrease was not caused by O2, H2O2 or IO3, and the sulfide peak was not stabilised by trace metal additions. A home-made flow-cell was constructed to enable the determination of sulfide in seawater using voltammetry with an HMDE. A stable sulfide peak was obtained by flow-analysis with voltammetric detection, with a precision of 2.8% and detection limit of 0.5 nM at a 60 s adsorption time. Several thiol compounds were found to produce a peak at, or very close to, the peak potential for sulfide. Their interference was evaluated by allowing the sulfide peak in conventional (batch) voltammetry to decay. Comparative experiments showed that waste metallic mercury is responsible for removal of sulfide in batch-mode analysis due to formation of insoluble mercuric sulfide salts causing the rapid decay of the sulfide peak. The problem is circumvented by using flow-analysis to determine sulfide.  相似文献
