Published experimental data on ion composition in the topside ionosphere are examined. For certain features (the light ion trough, the high-latitude trough, the high-latitude hole and the mid-latitude total ion concentration trough) it is pointed out that the number of major ions present may be 3 or more. Transport equations derived by Schunk and co-workers are extended to include the case of three major ions in the topside ionosphere. Specific calculations are made for the O+, H+ and He+ ions and the behaviour of the diffusion coefficients is discussed. From a model of the high-latitude ionization hole, described by Heelis et al., representative concentration and temperature profiles are obtained. These profiles are used to demonstrate further the behaviour of the ion diffusion coefficients.  相似文献

Recent satellite observations of thermal ion composition in the near-equatorial plasmasphere have shown that He+ comprises 5–10% typically and occasionally 25% or more of the total thermal ion density. A steady state diffusive equilibrium model for the distributions of H+, He+ and O+ along a plasmaspheric flux tube is used to elicit effects that may help explain these observed high He+ fractional concentrations. The model indicates that both the ionospheric composition and the temperature distribution along the flux tubes are important factors controlling the equatorial He+ composition, through the plasma scale height and thermal diffusion effects. Direct comparison of the model results with thermal ion observations by ISEE-1 indicates that the effects incorporated into the model may explain some of the elevated He+ concentrations. In some instances, however, effects not included in the model may also be of importance.  相似文献

The effects of F-region neutral winds on the distribution of He+ in the equatorial ionosphere have been examined using a theoretical model and an observational data set. It is shown by the model that components of neutral wind in the magnetic meridian up to only 50 m s? can produce He+ gradients in the northern and southern sectors of a flux tube that differ by more than 80%. This is associated with interhemisphere transport velocities of He+ as large as 15 m s?1 at 800 km. A substantial latitude gradient in the He+ distribution across the dip equator also results from the redistribution of He+ The changes in the He+ concentration at the dip equator and the latitude distribution of He+ in response to different neutral wind components is determined from the model and used to construct longitude distributions of He+ to compare with observations made at equinox. Good agreement between the calculations and observations is obtained both at the geographic and geomagnetic equators using the relationship between neutral winds, interhemispheric transport velocity and He+ concentration derived from the model. If these relationships can be extrapolated to accommodate the different conditions expected during solstice, we can also discuss the He+ distributions expected during this season.  相似文献

Charge exchange collisions between interplanetary neutral H atoms and solar wind protons may lead to fluxes of neutral H atoms and He+ ions in the solar wind. Photoionization of interplanetary helium atoms may also contribute to the He+ flux. The expected fluxes of He+ ions and neutral H atoms in the solar wind are computed. A simple model is used to compute the intensity of resonantly backscattered solar Hell (λ304 Å) and Lyman α radiation.  相似文献

Extensive calculations have been made of the behaviour of He+ for situations where ion outflow occurs from the topside ionosphere. For these circumstances, steady state solutions for the He+ continuity, momentum and energy equations have been obtained self-consistently, yielding density, velocity and temperature profiles of He+ from 200 to 2000 km altitude. To model the high latitude topside ionosphere, a range of background H+O+ ionospheres was considered with variations in the H+ outflow velocity, the presence of a perpendicular electric field and different peak O+ densities. In addition, the atmospheric density of neutral helium was chosen to model typical observed winter and summer densities. From our studies we have found that: (a) The outflowing He+ has density profiles of similar shape to those of H+, for basically different reasons; (b) The effect of the perpendicular electric field differs considerably for H+ and He+. This difference stems from the fact that an electric field acts to alter significantly the O+ density at high altitudes and this, in turn, changes the H+ escape flux through the O++H charge exchange reaction. A similar situation does not occur for He+ and therefore the He+ escape flux exhibits a negligibly small change with electric field; (c) The fractional heating of He+ due to the He+O+ relative flow is not as effective in heating He+ as the H+O+ relative flow is in heating H+; (d) During magnetospheric disturbances when the N2 density at the altitude of the He+ peak (600 km) can increase by a factor as large as 50, the He+ peak density decreases only by approximately a factor of 2; and (e) The He+ escape flux over the winter pole is approximately a factor of 20 greater than the He+ escape flux over the summer pole. Consequently, on high latitude closed field lines there could be an interhemispheric He+ flux from winter to summer.  相似文献

Steady-state calculations are performed for the daytime equatorial F2-region and topside ionosphere. Values are calculated of the electron and ion temperatures and the concentrations and field-aligned velocities of the ions O+, H+ and He+. Account is taken of upward E × B drift, a summer-winter horizontal neutral air wind and heating of the electron gas by thermalization of fast photoelectrons. The calculated plasma temperatures are in accord with experiment: at the equator there is an isothermal region from about 400–550 km altitude, with temperatures of about 2400 K around 800 km altitude. The transequatorial O+ breeze flux from summer to winter in the topside ionosphere is not greatly affected by the elevated plasma temperatures. The field-aligned velocities of H+ and He+ depend strongly on the O+ field-aligned velocity and on the presence of large temperature gradients. For the minor ions, ion-ion drag with O+ cannot be neglected for the topside ionosphere.  相似文献

Using particle aspect approach, the effect of multi-ions densities on the dispersion relation, growth rate, perpendicular resonant energy and growth length of electromagnetic ion cyclotron wave with general loss-cone distribution function in hot anisotropic multi-ion plasma is presented for auroral acceleration region. It is observed that higher He+ and O+ ions densities enhance the wave frequency closer to the H+ ion cyclotron frequency and growth rate of the wave. The differential heating of He+ ions perpendicular to the magnetic field is enhanced at higher densities of He+ ions. The waves require longer distances to achieve observable amplitude by wave-particle interactions mechanism as predicted by growth length. It is also found that electron thermal anisotropy of the background plasma enhances the growth rate and reduces the growth length of multi-ions plasma. These results are determined for auroral acceleration region.  相似文献

We have modelled the plasmaspheric density distribution for a range of solar cycle, seasonal and diurnal conditions with a magnetic flux tube dependent diffusive equilibrium model by using experimentally determined values of ionospheric parameters at 675 km as boundary conditions.Data is presented in terms of plasmaspheric H+ and He+ density contours, total flux tube content and equatorial plasma density for a range of L-values from 1.15 to 3.0. The variation of equatorial density with L-value shows good agreement with the 1L4 dependence observed experimentally. The results show that the model predicts larger solar cycle and diurnal variation in equatorial plasma density than observed using whistler techniques. However, the whistler method requires a model to deduce the equatorial density and is therefore open to interpretation.Seasonal variations are rather artifical since in this general model we have not attempted to match equatorial densities for flux tubes emanating from the winter and summer hemispheres.  相似文献

An empirical model of atomic ion densities (H+, He+, N+, O+) is presented up to 4000 km altitude as a function of time (diurnal, annual), space (position, altitude) and solar flux (F10.7) — using observations of satellites (AE-B, AE-C, AE-D, AE-E, ISIS-2, OGO-6) and rockets during quiet geophysical conditions (K p 3). The numerical treatment is based upon harmonic functions for the horizontal pattern and cubic splines for the vertical structure. The ion densities increase with increasing height up to a maximum (depending roughly on the ion mass) and decrease beyond that with increasing altitude. Above 200 km, O+ is the main ionic constituent being replaced at approximately 800 km (depending on latitude, local time, etc.) by H+. Around polar regions the light ions, H+ and He+, are depleted (polar wind) and the heavier ones enhanced. During local summer conditions the ion densities increase around polar latitudes and correspondingly decrease during local winter, except He+ which reflects the opposite pattern. Diurnal variations are intrinsically coupled to the individual plasma layers: N+ and O+ peak, in general, during daytime, while the amplitudes and phases of H+ and He+ change strongly with altitude and latitude. Measured rates are presented for the reaction of He+ ions with H2 (and D2) molecules to form H+, H2+, and HeH+ ions, as well as for the subsequent reactions of H+ and HeH+ ions with H2 to form H3+. The neutralization of H3+ (and H5+) ions by dissociative recombination with electrons is shown to be fast. The reaction He+ + H2 is slow (k = 1.1 × 10?13 cm3/sec at300°K) and produces principally H+ by the dissociative charge transfer branch. It is concluded that there may be a serious bottleneck in the conversion of two of the primary ions of the upper Jovian ionosphere, H+ and He+ (which recombine slowly), to the rapidly recombining H3+ ion (α[H3+]?3.4 × 10?7 cm3/sec at 150°K).  相似文献

During the approach of Pioneer 7 to a distance of 12.1 × 106 km from the nucleus of Comet P/Halley on March 20, 1986, features were observed in plasma analyzer data that we interpret as He+ produced by charge exchange of solar wind He++ with neutral cometary material. The maximum flux of the He+ was observed several hours after the closest approach of the spacecraft to the nucleus, and is unexpectedly large. Remarkable large discontinuous flux changes were also observed.  相似文献

We have an unique opportunity to compare the magnetospheres of two non-magnetic planets as Mars and Venus with identical instrument sets Aspera-3 and Aspera-4 on board of the Mars Express and Venus Express missions. We have performed both statistical and case studies of properties of the magnetosheath ion flows and the flows of planetary ions behind both planets. We have shown that the general morphology of both magnetotails is generally identical. In both cases the energy of the light (H+) and the heavy (O+, etc.) ions decreases from the tail periphery (several keV) down to few eV in the tail center. At the same time the wake center of both planets is occupied by plasma sheet coincident with the current sheet of the tail. Both plasma sheets are filled by accelerated (500-1000 eV) heavy planetary ions. We report also the discovery of a new feature never observed before in the tails of non-magnetic planets: the plasma sheet is enveloped by consecutive layers of He+ and H+ with decreasing energies.  相似文献

Coordinated observations involving ion composition, thermal plasma, energetic particle, and ULF magnetic field data from GEOS 1 and 2 often reveal the presence of electromagnetic ion cyclotron and magnetosonic waves, which are distinguished by their respective polarization characteristics and frequency spectra. The ion cyclotron waves are identified by a magnetic field perturbation that lies in a plane perpendicular to the Earth's magnetic field B0 and propagate along B0. They are associated with the abundance of cold He+ in the presence of anisotropic pitch angle distributions of ions having energies E > 20 keV, and were observed at frequencies near the He+ gyrofrequency. The magnetosonic waves are characterized by a magnetic field perturbation parallel to B0 and thus seem to be propagating perpendicular to the Earth's magnetic field. They often occur at harmonics (not always including the fundamental) at the proton gyrofrequency and are associated with phase-space-density distributions that peak at energies E ~ 5–30 keV and at a pitch angle of 90°. Such a ring-like distribution is shown to excite instability in the magnetosonic mode near harmonics of the proton gyrofrequency. Magnetosonic waves are associated in other cases with sharp spatial gradients in energetic ion intensity. Such gradients are encountered in the early afternoon sector (as a consequence of the drift shell distortion caused by the convection electric field) and could likewise constitute a source of free energy for plasma instabilities.  相似文献

The diurnal and seasonal variations of H+, He+, N+, O+ and Ne are analyzed at 1400-km altitude. Using longitudinally averaged observations of ISIS-2 (April 1971 to December 1972), the ion and electron densities are decomposed via spherical harmonics and Fourier series into time-independent, seasonal and diurnal terms. The time-independent terms of H+ and He+ show a plateauor trough-like structure at medium to low latitudes and a strong decrease towards the poles; N+ and O+, on the other hand, yield an almost inverse picture with a density increase at high latitudes. All constituents, except He+, show at polar latitudes an enhancement during local summer conditions and a depletion during local winter conditions; He+, however, exhibits a winter bulge and a density minimum during local summer. The diurnal variations are strongly latitude dependent; while the amplitudes (relative) of H+, He+, and Ne are rather small, the heavier ions N+ and O+ show a deep minimum early in the morning and a high but flat maximum during daytime.  相似文献

Plasma and magnetic field data from PROGNOZ-7 have revealed that solar wind (magnetosheath) plasma elements may penetrate the dayside magnetopause surface and form high density regions with enhanced cross-field flow in the boundary layer. The injected magnetosheath plasma is observed to have an excess drift velocity as compared to the local boundary layer plasma, comprising both “cold” plasma of terrestrial origin and a hot ring current component. A differential drift between two plasma components can be understood in terms of a momentum transfer process driven by an injected magnetosheath plasma population. The braking action of the injected plasma may be described as a dynamo process where particle kinetic energy is transferred into electromagnetic energy (electric field). The generated electric field will force the local plasma to ε×B-drift, and the dynamo region therefore also constitutes an accelerator region for the local plasma. Whenever energy is dissipated from the energy transfer process (a net current is flowing through a load), there will also be a difference between the induced electric field and the v×B term of the generator plasma. Thus, the local plasma will drift more slowly than the injected generator plasma. We will present observations showing that a relation between the momentum transferred, the injected plasma and the momentum taken up by the local plasma exists. For instance, if the local plasma density is sufficiently high, the differential drift velocity of the injected and local plasma will be small. A large fraction of the excess momentum is then transferred to the local plasma. Conversely, a low local plasma density results in a high velocity difference and a low fraction of local momentum transfer. In our study cases the “cold” plasma component was frequently found to dominate the local magnetospheric plasma density in the boundary layer. Accordingly, this component may have the largest influence on the local momentum transfer process. We will demonstrate that this also seems to be the case. Moreover we show that the accelerated “cold” plasma component may be used as a tracer element reflecting both the momentum and energy transfer and the penetration process in the dayside boundary layer. The high He+ percentage of the accelerated “cold” plasma indicates a plasmaspheric origin. Considering the quite high densities of energetic He+ found in the boundary layer, the overall low abundance of He+ (as compared to e.g. O+) found in the plasma sheet and outer ring current evidently reduces the importance of the dayside boundary layer as a plasma source in the large scale magnetospheric circulation system.  相似文献

In this paper we discuss the ionization equilibrium of hydrogen and helium in a nebula with an arbitrary gas density distribution. If we consider the spectral characteristics of hot stars, a power law is found to provide a good approximation to the Lyman continuum spectrum for stars withT eff≤100 000 K. With this simplification the ionization equilibrium equation is analytically solved first for a pure hydrogen nebula, then for the general case of a nebula containing H, He, and heavy elements. A simple and quite general formula for the determination of the size and the emission of the He+ zone is obtained. Finally, the ionization equilibrium He++?He+ is considered. This problem can be decoupled from that of the ionization of H0 and He0 if the stellar spectrum is steeper thanv ?0.9 or, equivalently, if the star effective temperature is lower than 200 000 K. Within this limit, which surely includes all classicalHii regions and the low-medium excitation planetary nebulae, an analytical solution of the problem can be used.  相似文献

Solar wind interaction with neutral interstellar helium focused by the Sun's gravity in the downwind solar cavity is discussed in a hydrodynamical approach. Upon ionization the helium atoms “picked up” by the (single fluid) solar wind plasma cause a slight decrease in the wind speed and a corresponding marked temperature increase. For neutral helium density outside the cavity nHe = 0.01 atoms cm?3 and for interstellar kinetic temperature THe= 10,000 K, the reduction is speed of the solar wind on the downwind axis at 10 AU from the Sun amounts to about 2kms?1; the solar wind temperature excess attains 7000 K. The resulting pressure excess leads to a non-radial flow of the order of 0.25 km s?1. The possibility of experimental confirmation is discussed.  相似文献

All of the OGO-5 light ion density measurements (covering the period from March 1968 to May 1969) obtained from the Lockheed Light Ion Mass Spectrometer were used to determine the average global topology of the equatorial plasmasphere density distribution. The variation of the light ion equatorial density at L?3.2 with local time was deduced by determining the average density observed within one hour of a specific local time and within 0.1 of a given L coordinate. The average H+ density showed a semidiurnal variation with peaks near noon and midnight. The He+ observations also revealed multiple peaks throughout the day but with smaller amplitudes than those of H+. At L>3.2 plasma trough conditions increase the scatter of densities. The average variation of the H+ density with L within the plasmasphere is found to be steepest near midnight and can be least squares fitted equally well to either an exponential variation exp (?bL) where b is between 0.85 and 1.5 or to a power law L?a where a varies from 3.2 to 5.  相似文献

We derive the expression for the ponderomotive force in the real multicomponent magnetospheric plasma containing heavy ions. The ponderomotive force considered includes the induced magnetic moment of all the species and arises due to inhomogeneity of the traveling low-frequency electromagnetic wave amplitude in the nonuniform medium. The nonlinear stationary force balance equation is obtained taking into account the gravitational and centrifugal forces for the plasma consisting of the electrons, protons and heavy ions (He+). The background geomagnetic field is taken for the dayside of the magnetosphere, where the magnetic field have magnetic “holes” (Antonova and Shabansky in Geomagn. Aeron. 8:639, 1968). The balance equation is solved numerically to obtain the nonlinear density distribution of ions (H+) in the presence of heavy ions (He+). It is shown that for frequencies less than the helium gyrofrequency at the equator the nonlinear plasma density perturbations are peaked in the vicinity of the equator due to the action of the ponderomotive force. A comparison of the cases of the dipole and dayside magnetosphere is provided. It is obtained that the presence of heavy ions leads to decrease of the proton density modification.  相似文献

In this paper a quantitative analysis of magnetosheath injection regions observed by PROGNOZ-7 in the dayside high latitude boundary layer is performed. Particular emphasis is laid on describing the consequences of the observed excess transverse momentum of solar wind ions (H+ and He2+) as compared to the magnetospheric ions (e.g. He+ and O+) in the magnetosheath injection regions, hereafter referred to as energy transfer regions. An important result of this study is that the observed excess drift velocity of the solar wind ions as compared to the magnetospheric ions can be interpreted as a negative inertia current being present in the boundary layer. This means that the inertia current goes against the local electric field and that particle kinetic energy is converted into electric energy there. The dayside high-latitude boundary layer therefore constitutes a voltage generator (at least with respect to the injected magnetosheath plasma). The MHD-theory predicts a strong coupling of the energy transfer process in the boundary layer and the ionosphere, both regions being connected by field aligned currents. The rate of decay of the inertia current in the injected plasma element is in the range of a few minutes, a value which is directly proportional to the ionospheric resistance. By taking into account both the Hall and the Pedersen conductivities in the ionosphere, the theory also predicts a strong coupling between ionospheric East/West and North/South currents. A considerable part of the inertia current may actually flow in the tangential (East/West) direction due to this coupling. Thus, a consequence of the boundary layer energy transfer process is that it may generate currents, powering other magnetospheric plasma processes, down to ionospheric heights.  相似文献
