Magma mixing structures from the lava flow of Lesbos (Greece) are analyzed in three dimensions using a technique that, starting from the serial sections of rock cubes, allows the reconstruction of the spatial distribution of magmas inside rocks. Two main kinds of coexisting structures are observed: (i) “active regions” (AR) in which magmas mix intimately generating wide contact surfaces and (ii) “coherent regions” (CR) of more mafic magma that have a globular shape and do not show large deformations. The intensity of mingling is quantified by calculating both the interfacial area (IA) between interacting magmas and the fractal dimension of the reconstructed structures. Results show that the fractal dimension is linearly correlated with the logarithm of interfacial area allowing discrimination among different intensities of mingling.

The process of mingling of magmas is simulated using a three-dimensional chaotic dynamical system consisting of stretching and folding processes. The intensity of mingling is measured by calculating the interfacial area between interacting magmas and the fractal dimension, as for natural magma mixing structures. Results suggest that, as in the natural case, the fractal dimension is linearly correlated with the logarithm of the interfacial area allowing to conclude that magma mixing can be regarded as a chaotic process.

Since chemical exchange and physical dispersion of one magma inside another by stretching and folding are closely related, we performed coupled numerical simulations of chaotic advection and chemical diffusion in three dimensions. Our analysis reveals the occurrence in the same system of “active mixing regions” and “coherent regions” analogous to those observed in nature. We will show that the dynamic processes are able to generate magmas with wide spatial heterogeneity related to the occurrence of magmatic enclaves inside host rocks in both plutonic and volcanic environments.  相似文献

Magma mixing is common in the Earth. Understanding the dynamics of the mixing process is necessary for dealing with the likely consequences of mixing events in the petrogenesis of igneous rocks and the physics of volcanic eruptive triggers. Here, a new apparatus has been developed in order to perform chaotic mixing experiments in systems of melts with high viscosity contrast. The apparatus consists of an outer and an inner cylinder, which can be independently rotated at finite strains to generate chaotic streamlines. The two cylinder axes are offset. Experiments have been performed for ca. 2 h, at 1,400°C under laminar fluid dynamic conditions (Re ~ 10−7). Two end-member silicate melt compositions were synthesized: (1) a peralkaline haplogranite and (2) a haplobasalt. The viscosity ratio between these two melts was of the order of 103. Optical analysis of post-experimental samples reveals a complex pattern of mingled filaments forming a scale-invariant (i.e. fractal) distribution down to the μm-scale, as commonly observed in natural samples. This is due to the development in space and time of stretching and folding of the two melts. Chemical analysis shows strong non-linear correlations in inter-elemental plots. The original end-member compositions have nearly entirely disappeared from the filaments. The generation of thin layers of widely compositionally contrasting interfaces strongly enhances chemical diffusion producing a remarkable modulation of compositional fields over a short-length scale. Notably, diffusive fractionation generates highly heterogeneous pockets of melt, in which depletion or enrichment of chemical elements occur, depending on their potential to spread via chemical diffusion within the magma mixing system. Results presented in this work offer new insights into the complexity of processes expected to be operating during magma mixing and may have important petrological implications. In particular: (1) it is shown that, in contrast with current thinking, rheologically contrasting magmas can mix (i.e. with large proportions of felsic magmas and high viscosity ratios), thus extending significantly the spectrum of geological conditions under which magma mixing processes can occur efficiently; (2) the mixing process cannot be modeled using the classical linear two-end-member mixing model; and (3) the chemical compositions on short-length scales represent snapshots within the process of mixing and therefore may not reflect the final composition of the magmatic system. This study implies that microanalysis on short-length scales may provide misleading information on the parental composition of magmas.  相似文献

Summary A plethora of evidence indicates that magma mixing processes can take place at any evolutionary stage of magmatic systems and that they are extremely common in both plutonic and volcanic environments. Furthermore, recent studies have shown that the magma mixing process is governed by chaotic dynamics whose evolution in space and time generates complex compositional patterns. The fact that magma mixing processes can produce igneous bodies exhibiting a large compositional complexity brings up the key question about the potential pitfalls that may be associated with the sampling of these systems for petrological studies. In particular, since commonly only exiguous portions of the whole magmatic system are available as outcrops for sampling, it is important to address the point whether the sampling may be considered representative of the complexity of the magmatic system. Here, we attempt to address this crucial point by performing numerical simulations of magma mixing processes in 3D, and by evaluating the best conditions for sampling by considering different landscape morphologies and percentages of vegetation cover. It is shown that the goodness of sampling is strongly dependant on the roughness of the landscape, with highly irregular morphologies being the best candidates to give the most complete information on the whole magma body. Vegetation cover, on the contrary, does not appear to significantly influence the representativeness of sampling.  相似文献

Magma mixing structures from three different lava flows (Salina, Vulcano and Lesbos) are studied in order to assess the possible chaotic origin of magma mixing processes. Structures are analysed using a new technique based on image analysis procedures that extract time series that are representative of the relative change in composition through the structures. These time series are then used to reconstruct the attractors underlying the magma mixing process and to calculate the fractal dimension of the attractors. Results show that attractors exist and possess fractional dimensions. This evidence suggests that the mixing of magmas is a chaotic process governed by a low number of degrees of freedom. In addition, fractal dimension analyses allows us to discriminate between different regimes of mixing in the three lava flows. In particular our analyses suggest that the lava flow of Salina underwent more turbulent mixing than the lava flows of Lesbos and Vulcano.  相似文献

Aoba picrites in Vanuatu arc (Southwestern Pacific) offer the opportunity to address the question of the origin of Si-undersaturated arc magmas, through the geochemical study of their olivine-hosted melt inclusions. These latter delineate a differentiation trend of calc-alkaline silica-undersaturated basalts, with typical trace-element patterns of arc magmas. The most primitive melt inclusions, preserved in olivines with Fo ≥ 89, have normative nepheline compositions with CaO/Al2O3 > 0.8, but belong to three distinct populations differing in their enrichment or depletion in LILE, Cl, and alkalis (Rb, K). The dominant population is characterized by medium-LILE concentrations (La/Yb ~ 7–8) and represents the parental magma of the Aoba lavas. The two others (La/Yb ~ 20 and 2) are either significantly enriched or extremely depleted in LILE, Cl, and alkalis. This compositional variability of primitive magma batches requires the multi-stage mixing between melts generated by partial melting of both peridotite and clinopyroxene-rich lithologies. Medium-LILE magma derives from the mixing between peridotite- and clinopyroxenite-derived melts, whereas the high- and low-LILE melts involve amphibole-bearing and amphibole-free clinopyroxenite sources, respectively.

The Merensky Reef and the underlying Upper Group 2 chromitite layer, in the Critical Zone of the Bushveld Complex, host much of the world’s platinum-group element (PGE) mineralization. The genesis is still debated. A number of features of the Merensky Reef are not consistent with the hypotheses involving mixing of magmas. Uniform mixing between two magmas over an area of 150 by 300 km and a thickness of 3–30 km seems implausible. The Merensky Reef occurs at the interval where Main Zone magma is added, but the relative proportions of the PGE in the Merensky Reef are comparable to those of the Critical Zone magma. Mineral and isotopic evidence in certain profiles through the Merensky Unit suggest either mixing of minerals, not magmas, and in one case, the lack of any chemical evidence for the presence of the second magma. The absence of cumulus sulphides immediately above the Merensky Reef is not predicted by this model. An alternative model is proposed here that depends upon pressure changes, not chemical processes, to produce the mineralization in chromite-rich and sulphide-rich reefs. Magma was added at these levels, but did not mix. This addition caused a temporary increase in the pressure in the extant Critical Zone magma. Immiscible sulphide liquid and/or chromite formed. Sinking sulphide liquid and/or chromite scavenged PGE (as clusters, nanoparticles or platinum-group minerals) from the magma and accumulated at the floor. Rupturing of the roof resulted in a pressure decrease and a return to sulphur-undersaturation of the magma.  相似文献

Summary ¶Mafic microgranular enclaves occur in most calc-alkaline granitoids, and it is widely accepted that they represent the remnants of basic magmas that interacted with more acid magmas. In this work we present new data on mafic microgranular enclaves occurring in the granodiorites of the Sithonia Plutonic Complex (Northern Greece). Enclave properties have been studied using different methods. Quantitative textural analysis has been carried out in order to decipher the crystallization history of enclaves once they have been entrained in the more acid and cooler host magma. In particular, the nucleation density (C), the mode (M) and the crystal index (n) of enclaves has been measured. Along with textural analysis, the size of enclaves has also been estimated using a method that, based on two-dimensional sections of enclaves, allows the estimation of volume of enclaves. Geochemical analyses have been performed to investigate the degree of chemical interaction that enclaves suffered from the host acid magma. The different data sets have been utilized to furnish a general evolutionary model of the magmatic interaction process between the basic and the acid magmas that led to the formation of the granodioritic host rock and related mafic microgranular enclaves. It is concluded that, as the magmatic interaction process proceeded, the crystallization of enclaves involved the nucleation of apatite and epidote (first stage of crystallization) followed by biotite, ± hornblende, plagioclase, and titanite (second stage of crystallization); the last minerals that nucleate were quartz and K-feldspar. During crystallization enclaves underwent contamination by the host acid magma through flow channels opened during the transfer of mineral phases from the host magma to the enclaves. When the two magmas attained similar rheological behaviour a two-end member mixing process was favoured inducing progressively more vigorous mixing dynamics. Volumetric analysis of enclaves indicates that the smaller ones suffered a more intense geochemical interaction compared to the larger ones. We interpret this evidence as being strictly related to the kinematics of the mixing process, the latter governed by chaotic dynamics. Enclaves are viewed as portions of the basic magma that did not mix completely with the acid host magma and survived the mixing process. Host rocks are considered as volumes of the magmatic system where the more efficient mixing dynamics produced different, generally higher, degrees of hybridisation.Received May 22, 2002; revised version accepted November 5, 2002 Published online February 24, 2003  相似文献

Dioritic and granodioritic rocks coexist in the Gęsiniec Intrusion in SW Poland showing typical relationships in many mafic–felsic mingling zones worldwide, such as dioritic syn-putonic dykes and microgranular enclaves within granodioritic host. Plagioclase zonation from granodioritic rocks suggests late stage mixing probably with dioritic magma, whereas no magma mixing is recorded in plagioclase from dioritic rocks. The diorites seem to show effects of interaction with evolved, leucocratic melts derived from granodiorite, not with the granodioritic melt itself. We conclude that the diorites’ compositions were modified after their emplacement within the granodioritic host, when the diorites were essentially solidified and injection of evolved melt from granodiorite did not involve marked modification of plagioclase composition. Compositional zoning patterns of plagioclase in diorites can be modeled by closed system fractional crystallization interrupted by resorption induced probably by decompression. Granodioritic plagioclase seems to be affected by the same resorption event. Plagioclase that crystallized in dioritic magma before the resorption does not record interaction between dioritic and granodioritic magmas, suggesting that both magmas evolved separately. A detailed study of the pyroclastic deposits of the AD 79 ‘Pompei’Plinian eruption of Vesuvius has allowed: (1) reconstructionof the thermal, compositional and isotopic (87Sr/86Sr) pre-eruptivelayering of the shallow magma chamber; (2) quantitative definitionof the syn-eruptive mixing between the different magmas occupyingthe chamber, and its relationships with eruption dynamics; (3)recognition of the variability of mafic magma batches supplyingthe chamber. During the different phases of the eruption 25–30%of the magma was ejected as white K-phonolitic pumice, and 70–75%as grey K-tephri-phonolitic pumice. The white pumice resultsfrom the tapping of progressively deeper magma from a body (T= 850–900%C) consisting of two distinct layers mainlyformed by crystal fractionation. The grey pumice results fromsyn-eruptive mixing involving three main end-members: the phonolitic‘white’ magmas (salic end-member, SEM), mafic cumulates(cumulate end-member, CEM) and a crystal-poor ‘grey’phono-tephritic magma (mafic end-member, MEM), which was nevererupted without first being mixed with ‘white’ magma.Evidence is provided that mixing occurred within the chamberand was characterized by a transition with time from physicalmixing at a microscopic scale to chemical hybridization. TheMEM magma had a homogeneous composition and constant 87Sr86Srisotopic ratio, possibly as a result of sustained convection. No unambiguous liquidus phases were found, suggesting that theMEM magma was superheated (T = 1000–1100C); its verylow viscosity was a main cause in the establishment of a physicaldiscontinuity separating the white and the grey magmas. Thewhite-grey boundary layer possibly consisted of a multiply diffusiveinterface, periodically broken and recreated, supplying thephonolitic body through mixing of moderate amounts of fractionatedgrey melts with the overlying white magma. The presence of alarge overheated mass indicates the young, growing stage ofthe AD 79 chamber, whose main engine was the periodic arrivalof hot mafic magma batches. These were characterized by K-tephriticto K-basanitic compositions, high temperatures (>1150C),high volatile contents (20–25% H2O +Cl+F+S), low viscosities[(1+2 102 poises)] and relatively low densities (2500–2600kg/m3). The birth of the Pompei chamber followed the repeatedarrival of these batches (on average characterized by 87Sr/86Sr070729)into a reservoir containing a tephriticphonolitic, crystal-enriched,magma, a residue from the preceding ‘Avellino’ Plinianeruption (3400 BP).In fact, about half of magma ejected duringthe AD 79 eruption could have been inherited from pre-Avellinotimes. A thermobarometric and petrologic study of basanites erupted from young volcanic cones along the submarine portions of the three El Hierro rift zones (NE-Rift, NW-Rift and S-Ridge) has been performed to reconstruct magma plumbing and storage beneath the island. Mineral-melt thermobarometry applied to naturally quenched glass and clinopyroxene rims yields pressures ranging from 350 to 1070 MPa with about 80% of the calculated pressures being in the range of 600–800 MPa. This corresponds to a depth range of 19–26 km, implying that the main level of final crystal fractionation is within the uppermost mantle. No systematic dependence between sample locality and fractionation pressures could be observed. Olivine and clinopyroxene crystals in the rocks are complexly zoned and have, on an inter-sample as well as on an intra-sample scale, highly variable core and rim compositions. This can best be explained by mixing of multiply saturated (olivine, magnetite, clinopyroxene, ilmenite), moderately evolved magmas with more mafic magmas being either only saturated with olivine + spinel or with olivine + spinel + clinopyroxene. The inter-sample differences indicate derivation from small, isolated magma chambers which have undergone distinct fractionation and mixing histories. This is in contrast to oceanic intraplate volcanoes situated on plumes with high melt supply rates, e.g. Kilauea Volcano (Hawaii), where magma is mainly transported through a central conduit system and stored in a shallow magma chamber prior to injection into the rift zones. The plumbing system beneath El Hierro rather resembles the magma storage systems beneath, e.g. Madeira or La Palma, indicating that small, intermittent magma chambers might be a common feature of oceanic islands fed by plumes with relatively low fluxes, which results in only limited and periodic magma supply.  相似文献

Disequilibrium textures in minerals are often observed in igneousrocks. Their occurrence is commonly related to the variationof intensive variables (e.g. pressure, temperature, etc.) thatperturbed a pre-existing state of equilibrium. However, if thevariation of intensive variables provides a reliable explanationfor the occurrence of disequilibrium textures in minerals, itdoes not explain why, over very short length scales (<1–2cm), in the same rock, crystals of the same mineral phase oftenappear to have reacted very differently to the disequilibriumprocess. A good example of this puzzling phenomenon is givenby clinopyroxene phenocrysts occurring in the Santa Venera alkalibasalt (Mt. Etna, Italy), in which a great variety of disequilibriumtextures, coexisting on very short length scales (<1–2cm), are observed. Clinopyroxenes exhibit heterogeneously resorbedCr–Al diopside cores around which a rim of Al–Fe3+diopside, having a highly variable area, has grown. The areaof the Al–Fe3+ diopside rim is used as a discriminantparameter for the studied pyroxenes as it displays a tri-modalstatistical distribution. In addition, the chemical zoning fromthe core to the rim of pyroxenes exhibits both continuous anddiscontinuous patterns. These continuous and discontinuous patternsare associated with crystals having low and high values of therim area, respectively. To explain these zoning patterns, amixing process between magmas having different geochemical andthermodynamic properties, governed by chaotic dynamics, is proposed. In particular, the occurrence in the same system, and at shortlength scales, of regular and chaotic regions is suggested asthe basic dynamic inducing a heterogeneous distribution of themagmas involved in the mixing process; this leads to a strongcontrol on the propagation of the disequilibrium phenomena andon the crystallization of pyroxenes, even over short lengthscales. The occurrence of regular and chaotic regions withinthe same magmatic system can explain the entire spectrum offeatures observed in the studied pyroxenes, from the occurrenceof the tri-modal distribution of rim areas to the presence oftwo distinct patterns of chemical zoning, continuous and discontinuous, from the core to the rim of pyroxenes. The Alaska–Aleutian island arc is well known for eruptingboth tholeiitic and calc-alkaline magmas. To investigate therelative roles of chemical and temporal controls in generatingthese contrasting liquid lines of descent we have undertakena detailed study of tholeiitic lavas from Akutan volcano inthe oceanic Aleutian arc and calc-alkaline products from Aniakchakvolcano on the continental Alaskan Peninsula. The differencesdo not appear to be linked to parental magma composition. TheAkutan lavas can be explained by closed-system magmatic evolution, whereas curvilinear trace element trends and a large range in87Sr/86Sr isotope ratios in the Aniakchak data appear to requirethe combined effects of fractional crystallization, assimilationand magma mixing. Both magmatic suites preserve a similar rangein 226Ra–230Th disequilibria, which suggests that thetime scale of crustal residence of magmas beneath both thesevolcanoes was similar, and of the order of several thousandyears. This is consistent with numerical estimates of the timescales for crystallization caused by cooling in convecting crustalmagma chambers. During that time interval the tholeiitic Akutanmagmas underwent restricted, closed-system, compositional evolution. In contrast, the calc-alkaline magmas beneath Aniakchak volcanounderwent significant open-system compositional evolution. Combiningthese results with data from other studies we suggest that differentiationis faster in calc-alkaline and potassic magma series than intholeiitic series, owing to a combination of greater extentsof assimilation, magma mixing and cooling. The Late Devonian Tolmie Igneous Complex (in north-eastern Victoria, Australia) contains S-type, intracaldera, rhyolitic ignimbrites with multiple generations of phenocrysts of biotite, garnet, cordierite and orthopyroxene; one unit also contains fayalitic olivine. Geothermometry and calculated phase relations indicate high-T deep- to mid-crustal origins for the magmas, with crystallisation at several levels. At least four separate magma groups make up the complex. Compositional variations within and between ignimbrites are adequately modelled by selective entrainment of peritectic garnet, ilmenite, orthopyroxene and plagioclase into the magmas. Neither crystal fractionation nor mafic-felsic magma mixing played a role. Chemical and isotope data suggest that the magma sources were once variably Ba-enriched arc greywackes with different proportions of clay. The deep origin of some of the Tolmie Complex magmas means that supracrustal rocks underlie parts of north-eastern Victoria at depths of around 35 km. This has important implications for understanding the region’s tectonic development.  相似文献

Pre-eruption processes are investigated for magmas erupted in1983 from Miyake-jima volcano, which is one of the most activevolcanoes in Japan. The whole-rock compositional trends of theeruptive products are principally smooth and linear. Magmaserupted from some fissures have compositions that deviate fromthe main linear trend. Phenocryst contents of samples displacedfrom the linear compositional trends are significantly lowerthan those of samples on the main trends. Anorthite-rich plagioclasephenocrysts, present throughout the 1983 products, are too calcicto have crystallized from the erupted magma composition, andwere derived from a basaltic magma through magma mixing. Althoughthe linear whole-rock composition trends favor simple two-componentmagma mixing, this cannot explain the presence of samples thatdeviate from the main trend. Instead, the observed compositiontrends were formed by mixing of a homogeneous basaltic magmawith andesitic magmas exhibiting compositional diversity. Theoriginal linear composition trends of the andesitic end-membermagma were rotated and shifted to the direction of the basalticend-member magma by magma mixing. The samples out of the maintrends represent magmas with less basaltic component than thoseon the trend. The density and viscosity of the basaltic end-membermagma were comparable with those of the andesitic end-membermagmas. The basaltic magma, discharged from one magma chamberat 2 kbar pressure, was injected into a magma chamber at lowerpressure occupied by the chemically zoned andesite magma (1kbar), and possibly as a fountain. To establish the characteristicmixing trend of the 1983 magma, the basaltic component musthave been distributed systematically in the zoned andesite magma.A requirement is that the basaltic magma spread laterally andmixed with the andesite magma at various levels of ascent ofthe fountain in the host andesite magma. Analysis of compositionalzoning in titanomagnetite crystals revealed that the eruptionof the 1983 magmas was initiated soon after the replenishmentof the basaltic magma in the 1 kbar magma chamber. Mafic and intermediate intrusions occur in the Slavkovsky les as dykes, sills and minor tabular bodies emplaced in metamorphic rocks or enclosed in late Variscan granites near the SW contact of the Western Krušné hory/Erzgebirge granite pluton. They are similar in composition and textures to the redwitzites defined in NE Bavaria. Single zircon Pb-evaporation analyses constrain the age of a quartz monzodiorite at 323.4 ± 4.4 Ma and of a granodiorite at 326.1 ± 5.6 Ma. The PT range of magma crystallization is estimated at ~1.4–2.2 kbar and ~730–870°C and it accords with a shallow intrusion level of late Variscan granites but provides lower crystallization temperatures compared to the Bavarian redwitzites. We explain the heterogeneous composition of dioritic intrusions in the Slavkovsky les by mixing between mafic and felsic magmas with a minor effect of fractional crystallization. Increased K, Ba, Rb, Sr and REE contents compared to tholeiitic basalts suggest that the parental mafic magma was probably produced by melting of a metasomatised mantle, the melts being close to lamprophyre or alkali basalt composition. Diorites and granodiorites originated from mixed magmas derived by addition of about 25–35 and 50 vol.%, respectively, of the acid end-member (granite) to lamprophyre or alkali-basalt magma. Our data stress an important role of mafic magmas in the origin of late Variscan granitoids in NW Bohemian Massif and emphasize the effect of mantle metasomatism on the origin of K-rich mafic igneous rocks.  相似文献

The origin and significance of microgranular enclaves as indicatorsof the occurrence of magma mixing and/or mingling episodes betweenbasic magmas and anatectic acid magmas, either I- or S-type,are re-evaluated. A model for studying microgranular enclaveand host rock associations has been developed, based on thegeochemical characteristics and the outcrop relationships observedin microgranular enclave-bearing granitoid suites. The model consists of three main stages, concerning the injection(stage 1), the evolution (stage 2), and the mixing (stage 3)processes that basic magmas experience when injected into anatecticcrustal environments. In stage 1, an acid magma is intrudedby one or more injections of almost completely liquid basicmagma which is hotter and less viscous than the acid magma. The two systems do not mix easily, but remain as discrete entitiesuntil thermal equilibrium and comparable viscosities are reached, and freezing of the basic magma and superheating of the acidmagma are operative along their boundaries. In stage 2, thebasic magma experiences both the physical processes of stretching, convective stirring, and mingling with the acid magma, and thechemical processes of crystal fractionation, and contaminationwith the acid magma (CFC process). Repeated cycles of thesephysical and chemical processes result in the formation of bothmicrogranular enclaves and an evolved liquid which is thermallyequilibrated with the acid magma. Accordingly, microgranularenclaves record the steps of evolution of the basic magma. Instage 3, the evolved products of the basic magma (tonaliticto granodioritic in composition) and the acid magma participatein a two-endmember mixing process which accounts for the geochemicalevolution of granitoid plutons bearing microgranular enclaves. The model sheds new light on the magmatic processes occurringin plutonic environments during the formation of composite batholiths, and also suggests some ideas on the petrogenesis of tonaliticplutons. Finally, the observed scale-independent property ofmicrogranular enclaves suggests that fractal geometry, a relativelynew topic of mathematics, can play a determinant role in theunderstanding of the chaotic flow mechanics of viscous fluids,i.e., the kinematics of the mingling and stretching of basicmagmas.  相似文献
