One of the products derived from the gravity field and steady-state ocean circulation explorer (GOCE) observations are the
gravity gradients. These gravity gradients are provided in the gradiometer reference frame (GRF) and are calibrated in-flight
using satellite shaking and star sensor data. To use these gravity gradients for application in Earth scienes and gravity
field analysis, additional preprocessing needs to be done, including corrections for temporal gravity field signals to isolate
the static gravity field part, screening for outliers, calibration by comparison with existing external gravity field information
and error assessment. The temporal gravity gradient corrections consist of tidal and nontidal corrections. These are all generally
below the gravity gradient error level, which is predicted to show a 1/f behaviour for low frequencies. In the outlier detection, the 1/f error is compensated for by subtracting a local median from the data, while the data error is assessed using the median absolute
deviation. The local median acts as a high-pass filter and it is robust as is the median absolute deviation. Three different
methods have been implemented for the calibration of the gravity gradients. All three methods use a high-pass filter to compensate
for the 1/f gravity gradient error. The baseline method uses state-of-the-art global gravity field models and the most accurate results
are obtained if star sensor misalignments are estimated along with the calibration parameters. A second calibration method
uses GOCE GPS data to estimate a low-degree gravity field model as well as gravity gradient scale factors. Both methods allow
to estimate gravity gradient scale factors down to the 10−3 level. The third calibration method uses high accurate terrestrial gravity data in selected regions to validate the gravity
gradient scale factors, focussing on the measurement band. Gravity gradient scale factors may be estimated down to the 10−2 level with this method.

Monitoring GOCE gradiometer calibration parameters using accelerometer and star sensor data: methodology and first results

The Gravity field and steady-state Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE) satellite, launched on 17 March 2009, is designed to measure the Earth’s mean gravity field with unprecedented accuracy at spatial resolutions down to 100?km. The accurate calibration of the gravity gradiometer on-board GOCE is of utmost importance for achieving the mission goals. ESA’s baseline method for the calibration uses star sensor and accelerometer data of a dedicated calibration procedure, which is executed every 2?months. In this paper, we describe a method for monitoring the evolution of calibration parameter during that time. The method works with star sensor and accelerometer data and does not require gravity field models, which distinguishes it from other existing methods. We present time series of calibration parameters estimated from GOCE data from 1 November 2009 to 17 May 2010. The time series confirm drifts in the calibration parameters that are present in the results of other methods, including ESA’s baseline method. Although these drifts are very small, they degrade the gravity gradients, leading to the conclusion that the calibration parameters of the ESA’s baseline method need to be linearly interpolated. Further, we find a correction of ?36 × 10?6 for one calibration parameter (in-line differential scale factor of the cross-track gradiometer arm), which improves the gravity gradient performance. The results are validated by investigating the trace of the calibrated gravity gradients and comparing calibrated gravity gradients with reference gradients computed along the GOCE orbit using the ITG-Grace-2010s gravity field model.

Alternative method for angular rate determination within the GOCE gradiometer processing
The most crucial part of the GOCE gradiometer processing is, besides the internal calibration of the gradiometer, the determination
of the satellite’s inertial angular rate. This paper describes a new method for the angular rate determination. It is based
on the stochastic properties of the GOCE star sensors and the gradiometer. The attitude information of both instrument types
is combined at the level of angular rates. The combination is done in the spectral domain by Wiener filtering, and thus using
an optimal relative weighting of the star sensor and gradiometer attitude information. Since the complete processing chain
from raw measurements to gravity field solutions is performed, the results are not only analyzed at the level of gravity gradients,
but also of gravity field solutions. Compared to the nominal method, already the resulting gravity gradients show a significantly
improved performance for the frequencies (mainly) below the gradiometer measurement bandwidth. This can be verified by analysis
of the gravity gradient trace. The improvement is propagated to the level of gravity field models, where a better accuracy
can be observed for selected groups of coefficients at characteristic bands at orders k × 16, with integer k, up to high harmonic degrees.

GOCE gradiometer: estimation of biases and scale factors of all six individual accelerometers by precise orbit determination
P. N. A. M. Visser 《Journal of Geodesy》2009,83(1):69-85
A method has been implemented and tested for estimating bias and scale factor parameters for all six individual accelerometers
that will fly on-board of GOCE and together form the so-called gradiometer. The method is based on inclusion of the individual
accelerometer observations in precise orbit determinations, opposed to the baseline method where so-called common-mode accelerometer
observations are used. The method was tested using simulated data from a detailed GOCE system simulator. It was found that
the observations taken by individual accelerometers need to be corrected for (1) local satellite gravity gradient (SGG), and
(2) rotational terms caused by centrifugal and angular accelerations, due to the fact that they are not located in the satellite’s
center of mass. For these corrections, use is made of a reference gravity field model. In addition, the rotational terms are
derived from on-board star tracker observations. With a perfect a priori gravity field model and with the estimation of not
only accelerometer biases but also accelerometer drifts, scale factors can be determined with an accuracy and stability better
than 0.01 for two of the three axes of each accelerometer, the exception being the axis pointing along the long axis of the
satellite (more or less coinciding with the flight direction) for which the scale factor estimates are unreliable. This axis
coincides with the axis of drag-free control, which results in a small variance of the signal to be calibrated and thus an
inaccurate determination of its scale factor in the presence of relatively large (colored) accelerometer observation errors.
In the presence of gravity field model errors, it was found that still an accuracy and stability of about 0.015 can be obtained
for the accelerometer scale factors by simultaneously estimating empirical accelerations.

GOCE gravitational gradients along the orbit

GOCE is ESA’s gravity field mission and the first satellite ever that measures gravitational gradients in space, that is,
the second spatial derivatives of the Earth’s gravitational potential. The goal is to determine the Earth’s mean gravitational
field with unprecedented accuracy at spatial resolutions down to 100 km. GOCE carries a gravity gradiometer that allows deriving
the gravitational gradients with very high precision to achieve this goal. There are two types of GOCE Level 2 gravitational
gradients (GGs) along the orbit: the gravitational gradients in the gradiometer reference frame (GRF) and the gravitational
gradients in the local north oriented frame (LNOF) derived from the GGs in the GRF by point-wise rotation. Because the V
XX
, V
YY
, V
ZZ
and V
XZ
are much more accurate than V
XY
and V
YZ
, and because the error of the accurate GGs increases for low frequencies, the rotation requires that part of the measured
GG signal is replaced by model signal. However, the actual quality of the gradients in GRF and LNOF needs to be assessed.
We analysed the outliers in the GGs, validated the GGs in the GRF using independent gravity field information and compared
their assessed error with the requirements. In addition, we compared the GGs in the LNOF with state-of-the-art global gravity
field models and determined the model contribution to the rotated GGs. We found that the percentage of detected outliers is
below 0.1% for all GGs, and external gravity data confirm that the GG scale factors do not differ from one down to the 10−3 level. Furthermore, we found that the error of V
XX
and V
YY
is approximately at the level of the requirement on the gravitational gradient trace, whereas the V
ZZ
error is a factor of 2–3 above the requirement for higher frequencies. We show that the model contribution in the rotated
GGs is 2–35% dependent on the gravitational gradient. Finally, we found that GOCE gravitational gradients and gradients derived
from EIGEN-5C and EGM2008 are consistent over the oceans, but that over the continents the consistency may be less, especially
in areas with poor terrestrial gravity data. All in all, our analyses show that the quality of the GOCE gravitational gradients
is good and that with this type of data valuable new gravity field information is obtained.

Exploring the possibilities for star-tracker assisted calibration of the six individual GOCE accelerometers
P. N. A. M. Visser 《Journal of Geodesy》2008,82(10):591-600
A method has been developed and tested for estimating calibration parameters for the six accelerometers on board the Gravity
field and steady-state Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE) from star tracker observations. These six accelerometers are part
of the gradiometer, which is the prime instrument on board GOCE. It will be shown that by taking appropriate combinations
of observations collected by the accelerometers, by modeling acceleration terms caused by gravity gradients from an a priori
low-degree spherical harmonic expansion, and by modeling rotational acceleration terms derived from star-tracker observations,
scale factors of each of the accelerometers can be estimated for each axis. Simulated observations from a so-called end-to-end
simulator were used to test the method. This end-to-end simulator includes a detailed model of the GOCE satellite, its instruments
and instrument errors, and its environment. Results of the tests indicate that scale factors of all six accelerometers can
be determined with an accuracy of around 0.01 for all components on a daily basis.

Regularization of geopotential determination from satellite data by variance components
Different types of present or future satellite data have to be combined by applying appropriate weighting for the determination
of the gravity field of the Earth, for instance GPS observations for CHAMP with satellite to satellite tracking for the coming
mission GRACE as well as gradiometer measurements for GOCE. In addition, the estimate of the geopotential has to be smoothed
or regularized because of the inversion problem. It is proposed to solve these two tasks by Bayesian inference on variance
components. The estimates of the variance components are computed by a stochastic estimator of the traces of matrices connected
with the inverse of the matrix of normal equations, thus leading to a new method for determining variance components for large
linear systems. The posterior density function for the variance components, weighting factors and regularization parameters
are given in order to compute the confidence intervals for these quantities. Test computations with simulated gradiometer
observations for GOCE and satellite to satellite tracking for GRACE show the validity of the approach.

A spatiospectral localization method is discussed for processing the global geopotential coefficients from satellite mission
data to investigate time-variable gravity. The time-variable mass variation signal usually appears associated with a particular
geographical area yielding inherently regional structure, while the dependence of the satellite gravity errors on a geographical
region is not so evident. The proposed localization amplifies the signal-to-noise ratio of the (non-stationary) time-variable
signals in the geopotential coefficient estimates by localizing the global coefficients to the area where the signal is expected
to be largest. The results based on localization of the global satellite gravity coefficients such as Gravity Recovery And
Climate Experiment (GRACE) and Gravity and Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE) indicate that the coseismic deformation caused
by great earthquakes such as the 2004 Sumatra–Andaman earthquake can be detected by the low-low tracking and the gradiometer
data within the bandwidths of spherical degrees 15–30 and 25–100, respectively. However, the detection of terrestrial water
storage variation by GOCE gradiometer is equivocal even after localization.

GPS-based precise orbit determination of the very low Earth-orbiting gravity mission GOCE
A prerequisite for the success of future gravity missions like the European Gravity field and steady-state Ocean Circulation
Explorer (GOCE) is a precise orbit determination (POD). A detailed simulation study has been carried out to assess the achievable
orbit accuracy based on satellite-to-satellite tracking (SST) by the US global positioning system (GPS) and in conjunction
the implications for gravity field determination. An orbit accuracy at the few centimeter level seems possible, sufficient
to support the GOCE gravity mission and in particular its gravity gradiometer.

GOCE level 1b data processing

In this article, the processing steps applied to the raw GOCE science payload instrument data (level 0) in order to obtain
input data for the gravity field determination (level 1b) are described. The raw gradiometer measurements, which are given
at the level of control voltages, have to be transformed into accelerations and gradients. For the latter step, knowledge
about the GOCE attitude is required, which is provided by the star trackers. In addition, the data of the satellite to satellite
tracking instrument are used to date the measurements, after its clock error has been corrected. All intermediate steps of
the processing flow are described. Together with the explanation of the processing flow, an overview of the main level 1b
products is given. The final part of the article discusses the means of quality control of the L1b data currently used and
gives an outlook on potential processor evolutions.

Considering present attempts to develop a gradiometer with an accuracy between 10−3
E and 10−4
E, two applications for such a device have been studied: (a) mapping the gravitational field of the Earth, and (b) estimating
the geocentric distance of a satellite carrying the instrument. Given a certain power spectrum for the signal and 10−4
E (rms) of white measurement noise, the results of an error analysis indicate that a six-month mission in polar orbit at a height
of 200 km, with samples taken every three seconds, should provide data for estimating the spherical harmonic potential coefficients
up to degree and order 300 with less than 50% error, and improve the coefficients through degree 30 by up to four orders of
magnitude compared to existing models. A simulation study based on numerical orbit integrations suggests that a simple adjustment
of the initial conditions based on gradiometer data could produce orbits where the geocentric distance is accurate to 10 cm
or better, provided the orbits are 2000 km high and some improvement in the gravity field up to degree 30 is first achieved.
In this sense, the gravity-mapping capability of the gradiometer complements its use in orbit refinement. This idea can be
of use in determining orbits for satellite altimetry. Furthermore, by tracking the gradiometer-carrying spacecraft when it
passes nearly above a terrestrial station, the geocentric distance of this station can also be estimated to about one decimeter
accuracy. This principle could be used in combination with VLBI and other modern methods to set up a world-wide 3-D network
of high accuracy.

Mission design, operation and exploitation of the gravity field and steady-state ocean circulation explorer mission
The European Space Agency’s Gravity field and steady-state ocean circulation explorer mission (GOCE) was launched on 17 March
2009. As the first of the Earth Explorer family of satellites within the Agency’s Living Planet Programme, it is aiming at
a better understanding of the Earth system. The mission objective of GOCE is the determination of the Earth’s gravity field
and geoid with high accuracy and maximum spatial resolution. The geoid, combined with the de facto mean ocean surface derived
from twenty-odd years of satellite radar altimetry, yields the global dynamic ocean topography. It serves ocean circulation
and ocean transport studies and sea level research. GOCE geoid heights allow the conversion of global positioning system (GPS)
heights to high precision heights above sea level. Gravity anomalies and also gravity gradients from GOCE are used for gravity-to-density
inversion and in particular for studies of the Earth’s lithosphere and upper mantle. GOCE is the first-ever satellite to carry
a gravitational gradiometer, and in order to achieve its challenging mission objectives the satellite embarks a number of
world-first technologies. In essence the spacecraft together with its sensors can be regarded as a spaceborne gravimeter.
In this work, we describe the mission and the way it is operated and exploited in order to make available the best-possible
measurements of the Earth gravity field. The main lessons learned from the first 19 months in orbit are also provided, in
as far as they affect the quality of the science data products and therefore are of specific interest for GOCE data users.

Parametric least squares collocation was used in order to study the detection of systematic errors of satellite gradiometer
data. For this purpose, simulated data sets with a priori known systematic errors were produced using ground gravity data
in the very smooth gravity field of the Canadian plains. Experiments carried out at different satellite altitudes showed that
the recovery of bias parameters from the gradiometer “measurements” is possible with high accuracy, especially in the case
of crossing tracks. The mean value of the differences (original minus estimated bias parameters) was relatively large compared
to the standard deviation of the corresponding second-order derivative component at the corresponding height. This mean value
almost vanished when gravity data at ground level were combined with the second-order derivative data set at satellite altitude.
In the case of simultaneous estimation of bias and tilt parameters from ∂2
T/∂z
2“measurements”, the recovery of both parameters agreed very well with the collocation error estimation.

A fast algorithm is proposed to integrate the trajectory of a low obiter perturbed by the earth's non-sphericity. The algorithm
uses a separation degree to define the low-degree and the high-degree acceleration components, the former computed rigorously,
and the latter interpolated from gridded accelerations. An FFT method is used to grid the accelerations. An optimal grid type
for the algorithm depends on the trajectory's permissible error, speed, and memory capacity. Using the non-spherical accelerations
computed from EGM96 to harmonic degree 360, orbit integrations were performed for a low orbiter at an altitude of 170 km.
For a separation degree of 50, the new algorithm, together with the predict-pseudo correct method, speeds up the integration
by 145 times compared to the conventional algorithm while keeping the errors in position and velocity below 10−4 m and 10−7 m/s for a 3-day arc.
