Lower mantle diamonds from Rio Soriso (Juina area,Mato Grosso,Brazil)   总被引:4,自引:2,他引:2  
The morphology, colour, fluorescence, cathodoluminescence, nitrogen content and aggregation state, internal structure and mineral inclusions have been studied for 69 alluvial diamonds from the Rio Soriso (Juina area, Mato Grosso State, Brazil). Nitrogen in most diamonds (53%) is fully aggregated as B centres, but there is also a large proportion of N-free stones (38%). A strong positive correlation between nitrogen and IR-active hydrogen concentrations is observed. The diamonds contain (in order of decreasing abundance) ferropericlase, CaSi-perovskite, magnetite, MgSi-perovskite, pyrrhotite, olivine, SiO2, perovskite, tetragonal almandine-pyrope phase and some other minerals represented by single grains. The Rio Soriso diamond suite is subdivided into several subpopulations that originated in upper and lower mantle of ultramafic and mafic compositions, with the largest subgroup forming in the ultramafic lower mantle. Analysed ferropericlase grains are enriched in Fe (Mg#=0.43–0.89), which is ascribed to their origin in the lowermost mantle. The Juina kimberlites may be unique in sampling the material from depths below 1,700 km that ascended in a plume formed at the core–mantle boundary.Electronic Supplementary Material  Supplementary material is available for this article at

The temperature dependences of the crystal structure and intensities of the (113) and (211) reflections in calcite, CaCO3, were studied using Rietveld structure refinements based on synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction data. Calcite transforms from to at about T c = 1,240 K. A CO3 group occupies, statistically, two positions with equal frequency in the disordered phase, but with unequal frequency in the partially ordered phase. One position for the CO3 group is rotated by 180° with respect to the other. The unequal occupancy of the two orientations in the partially ordered phase is obtained directly from the occupancy factor, x, for the O1 site and gives rise to the order parameter, S = 2x − 1. The a cell parameter shows a negative thermal expansion at low T, followed by a plateau region at higher T, then a steeper contraction towards T c, where the CO3 groups disorder in a rapid process. Using a modified Bragg–Williams model, fits were obtained for the order parameter S, and for the intensities of the (113) and (211) reflections. The thermodynamic stability constants for the hydrolysis and formation of mercury (Hg2+) chloride complexes
have been used to calculate the activity coefficients for Hg(OH) n (2–n)+ and HgCl n (2–n)+ complexes using the Pitzer specific interaction model. These values have been used to determine the Pitzer parameters for the hydroxide and chloro complexes and C ML). The values of and have been determined for the neutral complexes (Hg(OH)2 and HgCl2). The resultant parameters yield calculated values for the measured values of log to  ±0.01 from I  =  0.1 to 3 m at 25°C. Since the activity coefficients of and are in reasonable agreement with the values for Pb(II), we have estimated the effect of temperature on the chloride constants for Hg(II) from 0 to 300°C and I = 0–6 m using the Pitzer parameters for complexes. The resulting parameters can be used to examine the speciation of Hg(II) with Cl in natural waters over a wide range of conditions.  相似文献

Important aspects of melt inclusion formation and potential compositions effects have been addressed through a series of experiments using anorthite/fosterite saturated anhydrous mafic liquids. Experimental charges were cooled from 1,300 to 1,230 and 1,210°C at rates of 1–10°/min followed by 0–24 h isothermal periods. Hopper and skeletal crystal morphologies with variable degrees of completeness developed during the cooling period. Planar overgrowth of these textures during isothermal periods led to the formation of inclusions, the majority of which formed after 6 h of isothermal run time. We suggest that the change in morphologies is related to a decrease in growth rates and changes in dominant growth mechanisms. In general, inclusion compositions were uniform and similar to the host glass, indicating that with the isothermal times required for most inclusions to form, a boundary layer was not entrapped that could be detected within the limits of our analyses.

Phase transformations in a synthetic hedenbergite (CaFeSi2O6) have been observed with X-ray diffraction up to 26 GPa at 1200° C in a diamond anvil cell with a YAG laser heating system. Hedenbergite first decomposes into spinel, stishovite, and cubic perovskite phases at 16 GPa, and spinel further decomposes into wüstite and stishovite at 19 GPa. Between 19 GPa and 26 GPa, the phase assemblage is wüstite + stishovite+ perovskite. On decompression to 0.1 MPa, all the highpressure phases are retained except the cubic perovskite, which reverts to a retrogressive phase of CaSiO3. A comparison of the results of this study with those from a previous study on a natural hedenbergite suggests that the garnet phase formed from natural hedenbergite is stabilized by manganese.  相似文献

The volume variation with pressure of seven intermediate plagioclase feldspars has been determined by high-pressure single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The bulk moduli of plagioclases for a 3rd-order Birch-Murnaghan EoS can be described by the following pair of equations:
with for plagioclase with X An <20 and for X An >35. These parameters can also be used in a Murnaghan EoS to describe the volume variation of plagioclase feldspars up to pressures of 3 GPa. Natural Fe2+, Fe3+-bearing spinel solid solutions from the spinel s.s.-hercynite and gahnite-hercynite series were analyzed and studied by electronic absorption spectroscopy in the spectral range 30000–3500 cm–1 in the temperature and pressure ranges 77 TK 600 and 10–4 PGPa 11.0. Two crystals were light-violet in color (type I) and six green or bluish-green (type II). The spectra of both types of spinels are dominated by an UV-absorption edge near 28000 to 24000 cm–1, depending on the iron contents, and a very intense band system in the NIR centered around 5000 cm–1, which is caused by spin-allowed dd-transition of tetrahedral Fe2+, derived from 5 E5 T2. The strong band is in all spinels studied, split into four sub-bands, which can only be observed in very thin platelets. Between the UV-edge and the high-energy wing of the NIR-band there occur a number of very weak bands in type I spinels while the green type II spinels show some of these with significantly enhanced intensity. The intensity of the very weak bands is nearly independent from temperature. Such bands are attributed to spin-forbidden electronic transitions of IVFe2+. Temperature and pressure dependence of the intensity enhanced bands of spinels type II indicate that they are caused by IVFe2+ and VIFe3+. They are attributed to spin-forbidden transitions 6A1g4A1g, 4Eg, 4T2g and 4T1g of VIFe3+, the two latter being strongly intensified by exchange-coupling interaction with adjacent IVFe2+. The pressure dependence of IVFe2+ dd-band system in the NIR caused by spin-allowed 5 E5 T2 transition noticeably differs from that of octahedral Fe2+, an effect which is attributed to a dynamic Jahn-Teller effect of IVFe2+ in the spinel structure.

Commonly used thermometer and barometer calibrations are sensitive to mineral assemblage and, thus, bulk-rock composition. Calculated mineral stabilities for an average pelitic rock over a pressure–temperature (PT) range appropriate for normal, thickened, heated and shallowly subducted continental crust (400–900°C at 0.1–3.0 GPa) reveal more than one hundred possible assemblages. Individual phase compositions are dependent on the assemblage in which they belong and combining isopleth sets to represent and reveals several PT-ranges where commonly used mineral thermobarometers are less effective. For example, the garnet-biotite thermometer becomes increasingly P dependent in the absence of muscovite in high T melt-bearing assemblages, and biotite and plagioclase are not stable at pressures appropriate for lower thickened continental crust. Compositional thermobarometers involving equilibration between alternative phases (namely garnet, phengite and omphacite) are presented. Although the equilibrium compositions of phases at any P and T may change significantly as a function of bulk-rock composition, compositional-ratio thermobarometers are typically insensitive to this, unless a pseudo-univariant reaction is crossed and the buffering assemblage is altered. Quantification of the limits of efficacy of various thermobarometers allows the mineralogy of metapelites to be used to precisely determine segments of PT paths and infer their likely tectonic controls. The authors report a redox profile based on Mössbauer data of spinel and garnet to a depth of 210 km from mantle xenoliths of the northern (N) and southeastern (SE) Slave craton (northern Canada). The profile transects three depth facies of peridotites that form segments of different bulk composition, represented by spinel peridotite, spinel–garnet peridotite, low-temperature garnet peridotite, high-temperature garnet peridotite, and pyroxenite. The shallow, more depleted N Slave spinel peridotite records lower oxygen fugacities compared to the deeper, less depleted N Slave spinel–garnet peridotite, consistent with their different spinel Fe3+ concentrations. Garnet peridotites show a general reduction in log fO2 (FMQ)s with depth, where values for garnet peridotites are lower than those for spinel–garnet peridotites. There is a strong correlation between depletion and oxygen fugacity in the spinel peridotite facies, but little correlation in the garnet peridotite facies. The strong decrease in log fO2 (FMQ) with depth that arises from the smaller partial molar volume of Fe3+ in garnet, and the observation of distinct slopes of log fO2 (FMQ) with depth for spinel peridotite compared to spinel–garnet peridotite strongly suggest that oxygen fugacity in the cratonic peridotitic mantle is intrinsically controlled by iron equilibria involving garnet and spinel.

Interdiffusion of Fe and Mg in (Mg,Fe)O has been investigated experimentally under hydrous conditions. Single crystals of MgO in contact with (Mg0.73Fe0.27)O were annealed hydrothermally at 300 MPa between 1,000 and 1,250°C and using a Ni–NiO buffer. After electron microprobe analyses, the dependence of the interdiffusivity on Fe concentration was determined using a Boltzmann–Matano analysis. For a water fugacity of ∼300 MPa, the Fe–Mg interdiffusion coefficient in Fe x Mg1−x O with 0.01 ≤ x ≤ 0.25 can be described by with and C = −80 ± 10 kJ mol−1. For x = 0.1 and at 1,000°C, Fe–Mg interdiffusion is a factor of ∼4 faster under hydrous than under anhydrous conditions. This enhanced rate of interdiffusion is attributed to an increased concentration of metal vacancies resulting from the incorporation of hydrogen. Such water-induced enhancement of kinetics may have important implications for the rheological properties of the lower mantle.

Experiments have been carried out on a metagreywacke at 800, 850 and 900°C, in the pressure range 0.5–5 GPa to locate the solidus and the eclogite/amphibolite facies transition in felsic rocks, identify the nature of the reactions responsible for major mineralogical changes, and determine the proportions of phases as a function of pressure. The mineral assemblage phengite + clinopyroxene + garnet + quartz/coesite is stable above 2.3 GPa while biotite + plagioclase + garnet + quartz is stable below 2 GPa. The model reaction for the eclogite/amphibolite facies transition in metagreywackes is:
with melt on the low pressure–high temperature side of the reaction. The modal proportion and calcium content of garnet change with pressure. Both decrease from 5 to 2.5 GPa, then increase at the eclogite/amphibolite facies transition, and finally decrease with decreasing pressure below 2.3 GPa. The grossular content in garnet is thus a potential marker of the eclogite/amphibolite facies transition during retrogression. The modal proportion of melt progressively increases with decreasing pressure from 5 to 2.5 GPa, then shows a sudden and marked increase between 2.5 and 2.3 GPa, and finally decreases between 2.3 and 1 GPa. Thus, a melting pulse occurs at the eclogite/amphibolite facies transition during decompression of subducted continental crust. A survey of the main UHP metamorphic regions and the P–T paths followed during their geotectonic history indicates that partial melting may have played a role during their exhumation. A striking feature of retrogressed UHP felsic rocks is that garnet rims are commonly enriched in grossular. Our experiments explain this observation and demonstrate that a grossular-rich growth zone in garnet is not necessarily indicative of highest pressures reached during metamorphism but may correspond to a decompression stage.

Magmatism-related localized deformation in the mantle: a case study   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
A deformed composite peridotite-pyroxenite xenolith in Pliocene alkali basalts from the Pannonian Basin (Szentbékkálla, Bakony—Balaton Highland Volcanic Field) has been studied in detail. A narrow shear zone of intense deformation marked by porphyroclast elongation and recrystallization runs along the peridotite-pyroxenite contact. The xenolith contains a large volume of euhedral olivine neoblasts and tablet grains of olivine away from the shear zone interpreted as products of annealing and recrystallization in the presence of grain boundary fluid. Estimates of the time required for growth of recrystallized olivine grains suggest that the annealing took place in situ in the mantle and not during transport of the xenolith in the basalt magma. The grain boundary fluid present during recrystallization was a vapor rich silicate-melt different from the host basaltic melt that entrained the xenolith. This study demonstrates that high-stress deformation zones and associated fluid-assisted recrystallization, which are common features in kimberlite mantle xenoliths, also occur in some mantle xenoliths from alkali basalts. The suggested high-stress deformation zones in the mantle beneath the Pannonian Basin may be produced by paleoseismic events in the lithosphere associated with faulting related to the ascent of basalt magma.Editorial responsibility: J. Contamination of groundwater by arsenic from natural geochemical sources is at present a most serious challenge in the planning of large-scale use of groundwater for drinking and other purposes. Recent improvements in detection limits of analytical instruments are allowing the correlation of health impacts such as cancer with large concentrations of arsenic in groundwater. However, there are at present no known large-scale technological solutions for the millions of people—mostly rural—who are potentially affected in developing countries. An overall framework of combating natural resource degradation is combined with case studies from Chile, Mexico, Bangladesh and elsewhere to arrive at a set of strategic recommendations for the global, national and local dimensions of the arsenic crisis. The main recommendations include: the need for flexibility in the elaboration of any arsenic mitigation strategy, the improvement and large-scale use of low-cost and participatory groundwater quality testing techniques, the need to maintain consistent use of key lessons learned worldwide in water supply and sanitation and to integrate arsenic as just one other factor in providing a sustainable water supply, and the following of distinct but communicable tracks between arsenic-related developments and enhanced, long-term, sustainable water supplies.

Crustal-scale shear zones may act as prominent electrical conductors given that sufficient amounts of graphite or fluids are present. There are several graphite-enriched shear zones within the 583-m-deep Rittsteig drilling (Bavaria, Germany), two of which are of major importance. One shear zone cuts through Moldanubian biotite-muscovite schists at 320 m depth. The other shear zone separates Teplá-Barrandian amphibolites from Moldanubian biotite-muscovite schists at 460 m depth. To detect these shear zones adjacent to the drilling, the self-potential method and the non-linear impedance spectroscopy have been applied. From the new data, obtained from hole-to-surface and surface measurements, we conclude that (1) graphite is pervasively distributed within the Rittsteig shear zones resulting in powerful electronic conductors, (2) the graphite-bearing shear zones are dipping moderately towards the S, and (3) the shear zone drilled at 320 m depth extends to the Earths surface where it has been detected ca. 400 m to the N of the drilling. As the graphite-bearing shear zones of both the Rittsteig drilling and the German Continental Deep Drilling (KTB) developed in the brittle-ductile regime of quartzofeldspathic rocks, we argue that the brittle-ductile boundary layer may act as a significant graphite attractor in the continental crust.

A new oxygen-deficient perovskite with the composition Ca(Fe0.4Si0.6)O2.8 has been synthesised at high-pressure and -temperature conditions relevant to the Earths transition zone using a multianvil apparatus. In contrast to pure CaSiO3 perovskite, this new phase is quenchable under ambient conditions. The diffraction pattern revealed strong intensities for pseudocubic reflections, but the true lattice is C-centred monoclinic with a=9.2486 Å, b=5.2596 Å, c=21.890 Å and =97.94°. This lattice is only slightly distorted from rhombohedral symmetry. Electron-diffraction and high-resolution TEM images show that a well-ordered ten-layer superstructure is developed along the monoclinic c* direction, which corresponds to the pseudocubic [111] direction. This unique type of superstructure likely consists of an oxygen-deficient double layer with tetrahedrally coordinated silicon, alternating with eight octahedral layers of perovskite structure, which are one half each occupied by silicon and iron as indicated by Mössbauer and Si K electron energy loss spectroscopy. The maximum iron solubility in CaSiO3 perovskite is determined at 16 GPa to be 4 at% on the silicon site and it increases significantly above 20 GPa. The phase relations have been analysed along the join CaSiO3–CaFeO2.5, which revealed that no further defect perovskites are stable. An analogous phase exists in the aluminous system, with Ca(Al0.4Si0.6)O2.8 stoichiometry and diffraction patterns similar to that of Ca(Fe0.4Si0.6)O2.8. In addition, we discovered another defect perovskite with Ca(Al0.5Si0.5)O2.75 stoichiometry and an eight-layer superstructure most likely consisting of a tetrahedral double layer alternating with six octahedral layers. The potential occurrence of all three defect perovskites in the Earths interior is discussed.  相似文献

The behaviour of synthetic Mg-ferrite (MgFe2O4) has been investigated at high pressure (in situ high-pressure synchrotron radiation powder diffraction at ESRF) and at high temperature (in situ high-temperature X-ray powder diffraction) conditions. The elastic properties determined by the third-order Birch–Murnaghan equation of state result in K0=181.5(± 1.3) GPa, K=6.32(± 0.14) and K= –0.0638 GPa–1. The symmetry-independent coordinate of oxygen does not show significant sensitivity to pressure, and the structure shrinking is mainly attributable to the shortening of the cell edge (homogeneous strain). The lattice parameter thermal expansion is described by a0+a1*(T–298)+a2/(T–298)2, where a0=9.1(1) 10–6 K–1, a1=4.9(2) 10–9 K–2 and a2= 5.1(5) 10–2 K. The high-temperature cation-ordering reaction which MgFe-spinel undergoes has been interpreted by the ONeill model, whose parameters are = 22.2(± 1.8) kJ mol–1 and =–17.6(± 1.2) kJ mol–1. The elastic and thermal properties measured have then been used to model the phase diagram of MgFe2O4, which shows that the high-pressure transition from spinel to orthorombic CaMn2O4-like structure at T < 1700 K is preceded by a decomposition into MgO and Fe2O3.  相似文献

This paper describes an application of the geographic information system (GIS) technology to a ground stability assessment in the karst area of Dzerzhinsk, Russia. In the stability analysis, the groundwater level changes in the karst aquifer could cause suffosion sinkholes when the gravitational force was greater than the soil strength. The GIS technology was used to combine various data and to delineate the zones of potential gravitational collapse and suffosion collapse in the area.

It is a distributed database and application server network, built to select, visualize and model historical space weather data distributed across the Internet. SPIDR can work as a fully-functional web-application (portal) or as a grid of web-services, providing functions for other applications to access its data holdings.
