Abstract. This paper describes a new Ocean Acoustic Tomography (OAT) methodology - a passive tomography - presently in an advanced development phase. This technique has been developed for long-term, extensive, remote monitoring of the seawater temperature spatial distribution, which is estimated from the received noise emitted from ships of opportunity. To test the passive tomographic processor under controlled conditions, the components of the naval noise from different kinds of vessels was analysed and realistic naval noise was simulated. The feasibility of the proposed methodology was confirmed by test-runs on semi-synthetic data; its capability to resolve temperature profiles will be better assessed with the use of real acoustic and environmental data collected during the INTIMATE00 experiment performed in October 2000 in the Atlantic Ocean off the Portuguese coast. An analysis of the space and time variability of the Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) decomposition of the sound speed (SSP) in the Mediterranean Sea has been carried out to identify areas where acoustic tomography can be successfully applied. Results from simulations in the South Adriatic Sea, which was identified as a region with a high sound speed variability associated with the seasonal cycle and with the main oceanographic processes, are reported.  相似文献

The Princeton Ocean Model was implemented to investigate the response of northern Adriatic Sea during the Bora event in January 2001 when strong wind and surface cooling was reported. The model has been run with realistic wind stress, surface heat flux and river runoffs forcings continuously from 1 January 1999 to 31 January 2001. The wind stress and surface heat flux was computed by the bulk parameterization, using the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecast analysis fields and the Comprehensive Ocean Atmosphere Data Set cloud data. All the freshwater sources along the Adriatic coastlines were represented by point or line source functions. Open boundary conditions in the Ionian Sea along a latitudinal boundary were nested within a large scale model of the Mediterranean Sea. The numerical study found that, before the Bora event of 13–17 January 2001, the water column of the northern Adriatic Sea was stratified by salinity, and the temperature was already cooler at the surface and over the shallower shelf region. The pre-Bora circulation of the northern Adriatic Sea was relatively weak and baroclinic with maximum surface currents occurred near the Italian coast. During the Bora event, the water column was well mixed in the most of coastal region of the northern Adriatic Sea. The atmospheric cooling produced colder water over the northern and western Adriatic Coast. The circulation of the northern Adriatic Sea was barotropic and dominantly wind driven, with maximum current speed of about 1 m s−1. The numerical study also demonstrated that the Bora event decreased the heat content of the water column with an area averaged value of 205 W m−2 over the shallow northern shelf. It was concluded that the heat budget of the northern Adriatic Sea during the Bora event was a balance between the surface heat loss, horizontal net heat inflow and resulting heat content decrease. The horizontal advection played a particularly important role in controlling the water temperature change over the shallower northern shelf.  相似文献

针对海表温度数据集的数据缺失,提出了一种基于自组织映射算法(SOM)和经验正交函数算法(EOF)有机结合的重构缺失值的新方法。该方法应用了SOM的非线性估计,能够很好的反映数据集的非线性结构,并把SOM估计的结果用于EOF算法的初始化,克服了EOF对数据集初始化敏感的问题。在处理过程中,对奇异值分解使用了lanczos算子分解矩阵,提高了程序运行效率。此外,该方法还引入蒙特卡罗交叉校正集,确定最佳重构的EOF模态数,最终高精度计算出重构误差。使用AQUA遥感卫星海表温度数据进行实验,结果表明该方法能够很好地重构出缺失率高达83.23%的数据集,且重构精度高。  相似文献

在内波条件下,水声信道稳定性变差,声速剖面的重构具有一定难度。与其他方法相比,经验正交分解法优点在于能用少量参数进行重构,而不需要引入大量的参数。利用南海北部陆坡测量的温度链数据,采用经验正交分解法对声速剖面进行重构。结果表明:在内波剧烈的南海北部海域,通过经验正交分解法重构声速剖面具有可行性,其前3个模态累计贡献率达到96.7%。分析样本的周期覆盖率对重构结果的影响后发现,当样本覆盖完整的海洋潮汐活动周期时,基于EOF分析对本组声速剖面的重构均方根误差小于1.1 m/s,重构声速剖面结果理想;而当采集的样本不能覆盖完整周期时,误差较大。  相似文献

We compare insolation results calculated from two well-known empirical formulas (Seckel and Beaudry’s SB73 formula and the original Smithsonian (SMS) formula) and a radiative transfer model using input data predicted from meteorological weather-forecast models, and review the accuracy of each method. Comparison of annual mean daily irradiance values for clear-sky conditions between the two formulas shows that, relative to the SMS, the SB73 underestimates spring values by 9 W m-2 in the northern Adriatic Sea, although overall there is a good agreement between the annual results calculated with the two formulas. We also elucidate the effect on SMS of changing the ‘Sun-Earth distance factor (f)’, a parameter which is commonly assumed to be constant in the oceanographic context. Results show that the mean daily solar radiation for clear-sky conditions in the northern Adriatic Sea can be reduced as much as 12 W m-2 during summer due to a decrease in thef value. Lastly, surface irradiance values calculated from a simple radiative transfer model (GM02) for clear-sky conditions are compared to those from SB73 and SMS. Comparison within situ data in the northern Adriatic Sea shows that the GM02 estimate gives more realistic surface irradiance values than SMS, particularly during summer. Additionally, irradiance values calculated by GM02 using the buoy meteorological fields and ECMWF (The European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts) meteorological data show the suitability of the ECMWF data usage. Through tests of GM02 sensitivity to key regional meteorological factors, we explore the main factors contributing significantly to a reduction in summertime solar irradiance in the Adriatic Sea.  相似文献

We herein review the Adriatic opisthobranch fauna, provide an updated checklist of 223 species and assess their distribution at regional and country levels. New Adriatic records are provided for 67 opisthobranch taxa, adding three new records for the Italian coastline, five new records for Albania, eight for Croatia and 15 for Montenegro. The presence of Hermaea bifida (Montagu, 1815), Hermaea variopicta (Costa A., 1869) and Facelina annulicornis (Chamisso & Eysenhardt, 1821) is reported for the first time from anywhere in the Adriatic Sea. Including the new findings, our inventory includes 28 species from Albania, 163 from Croatia, 178 from the Italian coastline of the Adriatic, 41 from Montenegro and 74 from Slovenia. No records were available from Bosnia and Hercegovina. Ninety species (40.4%) are widespread, and were recorded from all three main divisions (Northern, Western and Eastern Adriatic), whilst 79 species (35.4%) were reported from only one of them. At sub‐division levels, the Albanian inventory is the most dissimilar to the other country/regional lists, presumably because of the lack of targeted field surveys. The highest similarity is observed amongst the Western Adriatic, Croatia and the Italian Ionian coastline. Seven alien, one possible alien and three cryptogenic opisthobranchs were reliably recorded from the Adriatic Sea. The first Mediterranean records of five species were in the Adriatic Sea, of which four species have not been found elsewhere in the Mediterranean. Shipping and aquaculture are the probable pathways for most of the alien species. A steady rate of one to two alien introductions per decade since the 1970s was evident. The Northern Adriatic coasts are the most affected by alien invasions, probably due to repeated local introductions along with shellfish transfers (oysters, mussels, Manila clams), and heavy maritime transport.  相似文献

本文使用2003年1月—2019年12月MODIS遥感数据,结合海表温度、风速分析南海中西部叶绿素质量浓度分布特征和影响因素。结果显示南海中西部叶绿素质量浓度分布存在时空变化。EOF分解表明,EOF1可能反映台风等极端天气对叶绿素的影响;而EOF2 和EOF3均反映了夏季沿岸上升流对叶绿素分布的影响。相关分析表明南海中西部叶绿素质量浓度与海面风场呈正相关(r=0.87,p<0.01),与海表温度呈负相关(r=-0.59,p<0.05)。夏季在西南季风影响下越南东南沿海形成上升流,导致该区浮游植物旺发、叶绿素质量浓度升高;冬季受强东北季风影响,研究区海洋上层混合作用强烈,营养盐供应增加,促进了浮游植物生长,叶绿素质量浓度高于其他季节。  相似文献

为探究渤海冬季风生环流的年际变化及机制,在近35年NCEP CFSR大气强迫下,利用ROMS海洋模式对渤海冬季流场进行了高分辨率的数值模拟。模式结果基本重现了已知的渤海冬季风生环流的主要特征。渤海冬季深度平均流场的EOF结果显示:首先,第一模态中风向的改变引起了一个环绕整个渤海的环流结构变化;其次,第二模态反映了渤海冬季环流存在的线性增强趋势与风场增强有关,尤其在1995年之后。从模式结果中发现,风场对渤海冬季流场存在的年际变化起到重要作用,风向的偏转对环流年际特征的影响强于风速变化。  相似文献

利用1998~2004年的热带降雨测量卫星的卫星遥感海表面温度(SST)数据以及美国NO-AA/NCEP再分析产品的850 hPa气温数据,采用EOF分析方法,分析了850 hPa气温的季节内变化特征,运用奇异值分解(SVD)分析方法对东、黄海SST与850 hPa气温季节内变化的相关关系进行了分析。对850 hPa气温季节内变化的EOF分析结果表明,EOF分析获得的前4个模态的累积方差贡献率为86.51%,其中EOF的第一模态的方差贡献率占44.49%,其空间模态呈现出明显的东南海域为正值、西北海域为负值的反相分布特征,这一模态的显著变化周期为6.6周(约46 d)和2.8周(约19 d)。SVD分析结果表明,第一对模态的协方差解释率为83.6%,基本上能体现出SST温度场与850 hPa气温场季节变化的特征,其空间分布型表明,东海北部以及黄海近岸等海区SST季节变化与30°N以南的东海海区850 hPa气温的季节振荡存在显著的正相关关系,SVD第一对模态空间分布型时间系数之间的相关系数达到0.29。  相似文献

A gusty downslope windstorm that blows at the eastern Adriatic coast is called bora. Similar winds exist at many other places on virtually all continents. Related hourly mean wind speeds surpassing 20 m s−1, with gusts reaching up to 50 or even 70 m s−1, in the coastal mountain lee areas are common (hurricane speeds). There has been substantial progress in bora observations and measurements, understanding, modelling and its more detailed prediction during the last 25 yr. It was generally thought before that bora was a falling, mostly thermodynamically driven wind; however, (severe) bora is primarily governed by mountain wave breaking. Understandings of bora interactions and influences on other processes have taken place as well, most notably in the air-sea interaction, but are not completed yet. The overall progress mentioned would not be possible without airborne data, non-linear theory and advances in computational techniques, most notably mesoscale numerical models. Some gaps in bora knowledge are also indicated, for example, dynamical transition from weak to moderate to strong to severe bora flows, where the latter are the main subject here, and vice versa. Moreover, the role of the boundary layer and waves on the upwind side of the bora evolution and the consequent lee side flow structures are inadequately understood; this is especially so for bora at the southern Adriatic coast. The focus here is on stronger bora flows at the NE Adriatic coast.  相似文献

The rocky outcrops irregularly scattered in the sandy‐muddy sea bed of the Northern Adriatic, formed by a base rock and a superimposed concretion of vegetal and animal organisms, are considered an infralittoral coralligenous habitat, according to the most recent definition. In the last four decades, research has mainly concentrated on their geology because of the question of the origin of the base rock – very similar to beachrock – which has only recently been attributed to sedimentary cementation induced by methane seeps. Studies on their macrobenthic assemblages have also been published recently, but true comparisons among them are difficult because they mostly refer only to a few selected phyla or to short‐term observations. Very few papers deal with the whole of the animal and plant communities, including all taxonomic groups and the most important environmental variables. On the basis of the literature data concerning several outcrops in the Gulf of Venice, we suggest that the Adriatic reefs differ slightly from the classic deeper coralligenous assemblages around the Mediterranean coast because they have smaller concretions of algae builders. We also suggest that the Northern Adriatic coralligenous reefs are younger than the other reefs occurring in the Mediterranean Sea.  相似文献

用HADLEY中心的HadISST的海温资料、NCEP的大气资料、国家气象局发布的74个月平均环流指数和美国华盛顿大学的PDO指数,讨论研究了中国近海海温的年际年代际振荡。通过对我国近海海温的EOF分析,可以发现我国近海30 N附近是海温年际年代际振荡信号最强的关键区,它占了总量的58.2%,与澳大利亚东北沿海海温年代际振荡有相同的周期,最明显周期是44—45年,滞后PDO信号近15年左右。该关键区海温与澳大利亚东北沿海海温都还存在1年、5年和15年的振荡,它们的相关系数达到0.604,属于同一个模态。另外,1年的海温振荡信号除了澳大利亚东北沿岸以外,还沿着西太平洋海岸线分布,因此中国近海海温年际年代际振荡不是一种局地现象,而与太平洋海温变化有关。另外,它是海气相互作用的结果,与中高纬度的东亚大槽和低纬度太平洋印度洋的风场、西太平洋副高和南海副高、大气温度场甚至南半球环流有明显的关系。  相似文献

Optical remote sensing data is now being used systematically for marine ecosystem applications, such as the forcing of biological models and the operational detection of harmful algae blooms. However, applications are hampered by the incompleteness of imagery and by some quality problems. The Data Interpolating Empirical Orthogonal Functions methodology (DINEOF) allows calculation of missing data in geophysical datasets without requiring a priori knowledge about statistics of the full dataset and has previously been applied to SST reconstructions. This study demonstrates the reconstruction of complete space–time information for 4 years of surface chlorophyll a (CHL), total suspended matter (TSM) and sea surface temperature (SST) over the Southern North Sea (SNS) and English Channel (EC). Optimal reconstructions were obtained when synthesising the original signal into 8 modes for MERIS CHL and into 18 modes for MERIS TSM. Despite the very high proportion of missing data (70%), the variability of original signals explained by the EOF synthesis reached 93.5% for CHL and 97.2% for TSM. For the MODIS TSM dataset, 97.5% of the original variability of the signal was synthesised into 14 modes. The MODIS SST dataset could be synthesised into 13 modes explaining 98% of the input signal variability. Validation of the method is achieved for 3 dates below 2 artificial clouds, by comparing reconstructed data with excluded input information. Complete weekly and monthly averaged climatologies, suitable for use with ecosystem models, were derived from regular daily reconstructions. Error maps associated with every reconstruction were produced according to Beckers et al. (2006). Embedded in this error calculation scheme, a methodology was implemented to produce maps of outliers, allowing identification of unusual or suspicious data points compared to the global dynamics of the dataset. Various algorithm artefacts were associated with high values in the outlier maps (undetected cloud edges, haze areas, contrails, and cloud shadows). With the production of outlier maps, the data reconstruction technique becomes also a very efficient tool for quality control of optical remote sensing data and for change detection within large databases.  相似文献

Very valuable papers concerning malacology of the Adriatic Sea deal, for the most part, with the systematics, whereas there is a substantial number of papers with very scarce information on the ecology of individual species. Since I intended to provide some more comprehensive data on individual species, rather complex bionomic and biocoenological research was undertaken aiming to study the taxonomy and the ecology of the Prosobranchiata group. Present research covered different biotopes of the northern, middle and southern Adriatic, both in the shallow coastal and deeper open littoral, and hard and mobile bottoms. Material was collected in two ways: 1) Scuba diving or direct collection and observations; and 2) an indirect method of collection of samples by Petersen grab, dredge and trawl. Throughout years of investigations of the coastal and open Adriatic, the species Cymatium corrugatum has been recorded only in the vicinity of the Vis and Hvar islands, at 60 and 80 m depths. It was found in the biocoenosis of detritic bottoms of the open sea and biocoenosis of coastal detritic bottoms. Cymatium corrugatum is a new species for the Adriatic and therefore it should be included in the register of the Gastropod fauna of the Adriatic Sea.  相似文献

We propose a gap-filling method for the data of remote sensing of the hydrophysical and biological characteristics of the water surface. The proposed method of reconstruction is based on the representation of the fields of surface characteristics as the sums of certain numbers of empirical orthogonal functions (EOF) making the largest contributions to the total variance of the field. According to the fragmentary data obtained as a result of processing of the satellite images for the summer season, we construct estimates of the mean field and of the four-dimensional space covariance function of the surface temperature of the Black Sea. The coefficients of expansion are computed by the method of least squares or determined with the help of a genetic searching algorithm. The results of numerical experiments show that the proposed method is quite promising for applications in the problems of gap filling in the available satellite data.  相似文献

Seasonal and interannual variability of surface chlorophyll concentration in the Bering Sea was examined using Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis of data obtained by the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) from 1998 to 2002. The analysis of normalized monthly fields (removing temporal and spatial monthly means) shows that different temporal and spatial patterns are evident in the eastern and western Bering Sea during the spring bloom period. The first EOF mode explains 30% of the variability and shows how the eastern shelf break region and the western Bering Sea are out of phase during the spring bloom. The second EOF mode (17.6%) indicates a pattern involving the eastern shelf break region and the Kamchatka Basin. This strong east–west signal is linked by both surface winds and light. EOF modes of wind-speed anomalies, derived from Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I), and photosynthetically active radiance (PAR) from SeaWiFS, show a similar dipole feature where the east–west pattern is related to the position and strength of the Aleutian Low pressure system. In years when the Aleutian Low shifts from west to east, weaker wind stress facilitates the development of stratification resulting in a strong spring bloom in the western Bering Sea. The variability of spring chlorophyll has a strong connection with variability in atmospheric forcing in the Bering Sea.  相似文献
