Errors in the interpretation of clouds, fumarolic activity and forest fires as volcanic eruptions in Tenerife, mainly in relation with Teide volcano, are common in references by passing navigators and other eyewitness accounts from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. In the case of the most common, historical, multiple‐vent fissure eruptions in the Canaries, vent locations provided by these accounts are frequently uncertain or are clearly erroneous and often conflict with geological evidence. Significant examples are the general association of the latest eruption of Teide volcano, dated at 1150 ± 140 bp , with the reference made by Christopher Columbus in 1492 to an eruption ‘on the flanks of Teide’, which actually corresponds to an eruptive vent (Boca Cangrejo volcano) situated in the NW Rift, dated at 400 ± 110 bp . Similar conflicting vent locations occurred in the 1730–36 eruption of Lanzarote and the 1677 eruption of La Palma. This article considers the volcanic cones located in the Orotava Valley, erroneously assigned by Chevalier de Borda and Alexander von Humboldt to a 1430 ad eruption. Geological evidence and radiocarbon dating of charcoal underlying the lapilli, and 40Ar/39Ar dating of one of the lava flows, show that these volcanic cones and lavas correspond to an eruption that took place about 30 000 yr bp . Analysis of the influence of these erroneous ages for the recent volcanism of Tenerife shows an overestimation of eruptive hazards of this island.  相似文献

In recent months the media have drawn attention to the Cape Verde archipelago, with particular focus on the island of Fogo, the only island presently active and with an eruption that began on 23 November 2014, finally ceasing on 7 February 2015. The Monte Amarelo conical shield forms most of the 476 km2 almost circular island of Fogo. After attaining a critical elevation of about 3500 m, the Monte Amarelo shield volcano was decapitated by a giant landslide that formed a caldera‐like depression (Cha das Caldeiras), which was subsequently partially filled by basaltic nested volcanism. This younger eruptive activity culminated in the construction of the 2829 m‐high Pico do Fogo stratocone, apparently entirely made of layers of basaltic lapilli. Continued growth of the Pico do Fogo summit eruptions was interrupted in 1750, most likely after the stratocone reached a critical height. Since then, at least eight eruptions have taken place inside the landslide depression at the periphery of the Pico do Fogo cone, including the 2014–2015 eruptive event. Strong geological similarities with the Canary Islands, 1400 km to the north, have been frequently noted, probably as a consequence of a common process of origin and evolution associated with a mantle hot‐spot. These similarities are particularly evident when comparing Fogo with the Teide Volcanic Complex on Tenerife, where a lateral collapse of the Las Cañadas stratovolcano also formed a large depression (the Caldera de Las Cañadas), now partially filled with the 3718 m‐high Teide stratocone. However, important geological differences also exist and probably relate to the contrasting evolutionary stages of both islands. The Las Cañadas volcano on Tenerife formed at a late post‐erosional stage, with predominantly evolved (trachyte and phonolite) magmas, while at Fogo basaltic volcanism is still dominant.  相似文献

The local and regional structural pattern of volcanic edifices strongly controls the space distribution of electrical resistivity. Here we report on the structural context of the western part of the Las Cañadas caldera of Tenerife (LCC) thought to have initiated the formation of the caldera. Using a new dataset of 11 audiomagnetotelluric tensors we emphasize the resistivity distribution of Ucanca caldera and propose a major revision of its extension. We find that Ucanca caldera has a limited westwards extent and that El Cedro sector is a depression margin of the caldera. According to the extent of hydrothermalized rocks at the base of the LCC wall and the distribution of Pico Teide – Pico Viejo vents, we constrain the location and size of Ucanca caldera. The interpretation of these results also constrains the extension of the Icod Valley and proposes a headwall located below the Pico Teide – Pico Viejo Complex.  相似文献

In 1972 UNESCO created the World Heritage List to 'preserve the world's superb natural and scenic areas and historic sites for the present and future generations of citizens of the entire world'. Nominated sites must be of 'outstanding universal value' and meet at least one of ten selection criteria, six cultural and four natural. Teide National Park (TNP) was inscribed in the World Heritage List in 2007 for its natural beauty and its 'global importance in providing evidence of the geological processes that underpin the evolution of oceanic islands' (Criteria vii and viii). The geological values rendering PNT an exceptional site are analysed in this article. Volcanism in Tenerife and TNP correspond to the Ocean Island Alkali Basalts (OIB), whereas the already nominated (1987) Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, from a different geodynamic setting, belongs to the Tholeiitic series (OIT). Both National Parks complement each other to represent the entire range of products, features and landscapes of oceanic islands. The main geological elements of this Park include Las Cañadas Caldera, one of the most spectacular, best exposed and accessible volcanic calderas on Earth, two active rifts, and two large felsic stratovolcanoes, Teide and Pico Viejo, rising 3718 m above sea level and around 7500 m above the ocean floor, together the third highest volcanic structure in the world after the Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea volcanoes on the island of Hawaii.  相似文献

Tenerife is the largest of the seven Tertiary to Recent volcanic islands that make up the Canary Archipelago. The island is composed of volcanics belonging to the basanitetrachyte-phonolite assemblage that characterises many Atlantic islands. The most voluminous development of intermediate and salic volcanics has been in the centre of the island where the Las Canadas volcanoes arose upon a basement shield composed mainly of basanite and ankaramite flows, tuffs and agglomerates. The initial post-shield activity built the Vilaflor volcanic complex (Lower and Upper Canadas Series) that originally covered much of the underlying shield volcanics. A vast collapse of the complex, probably during post-Pleistocene times, in the centre of the island has left a large semi-circular wall, and provides an excellent vertical section through the complex. Quaternary volcanism within the collapsed area has built the twin, central-type volcanoes, Viejo and Teide, both of which have attendant satellite vents. That part of the Vilaflor Complex exposed in Las Canadas, together with the Viejo and Teide volcanoes, comprise the Las Canadas volcanoes.Four distinct rock types can be recognised in these volcanoes, basanite, trachybasanite, plagioclase phonolite, and phonolite. Each rock type can be recognised chemically and mineralogically, but there is essentially a gradational series from basanite to phonolite that includes both aphyric and glomerophyric rocks. The volcanics are strongly undersaturated and sodic, and some of the phonolites are mildly peralkaline. Variations in degree of undersaturation, and trace element abundances indicate a number of cycles of activity which would be consistent with the known field relations.Forsteritic olivine occurs in the basanites and trachybasanites but is not a stable phase in the more salic volcanics. Clinopyroxene is ubiquitous, varying in composition from titanaugite in the basanites to slightly sodic augite in the phonolites. Strongly sodic pyroxene is restricted to the groundmass of the microcrystalline phonolites along with aenigmatite and a kataphoritic amphibole. Plagioclase is found only in the groundmass of the basanites, but andesine and potash-oligoclase are common phenocryst minerals in the trachybasanites and plagioclase phonolites respectively, whereas the characteristic feldspar of the phonolites is anorthoclase.The relatively smooth curves of major and trace element variation, the presence of accumulative volcanics at all stages of differentiation, zoning of the mineral phases, and the clustering of the phonolites around the low temperature trough in Petrogeny's Residua System, all indicate that the descent from basanite to phonolite has resulted from fractional crystallisation of a basanite parent magma. The trend of pyroxene crystallisation, and the fairly constant FeO/Fe2O3 ratio during fractionation indicate crystallisation under low PO2 conditions.  相似文献

A gravimetric analysis over the Tulum Valley was made. This data was used to reveal the structural setting of the Tulum Fault System situated in the southeastern part of San Juan province in the arid western part of Argentina. This system is the boundary between two geological provinces, the eastern Precordillera Oriental and the Sierras Pampeanas Occidentales. Gravity data was processed using upward continuation and vertical derivative filters and all the results were compared with the geomorphological and the drainage systems maps of the area. Our assessment confirms the presence of two structures in the Pampeano basement with positive anomalies similar to those found in Valdivia and Barboza hills, two important depocenters with low gravimetric gradients separated by a zone with higher gravity anomalies than the depocenters to the east and west. In view of this, a structural map is proposed for the area. This system is important not only because it is the boundary between two geological provinces and has significance regarding regional tectonic issues but also because it controls the surface drainage, soils distribution and groundwater flow of the Tulum basin conditioning the land use distribution.  相似文献

Popocatepetl volcano in Central Mexico entered its latest stage of activity in late 1994. Due to the nature of its eruptive history and its location in a heavily populated area, it constitutes the highest risk in the cuntry. For this reason the volcano is currently under continuous surveillance; yet the interpretation of the information is carried out mostly on empirical basis and an integrating working model is lacking, at the present. In this paper, models of elastic deformation and mass erupted are developed to estimate the mass erupted according to the observed deformation patterns. We present results obtained from input based upon a gravimetric model of the volcano's internal structure and reasonable physical parameters of the volcanic system. These results are helpful in the planning of deformation and gravimetric observations aimed to forecast a major eruption.  相似文献

Interpretation of seismic refraction data in the central sector of Tocantins Province, Central Brazil, has produced a seismic crustal model with well-defined upper, intermediate, and lower crust layers having smooth velocity gradient in each layer. The depths to Moho vary from 32 to 43 km, and mean crustal P velocity varies from 6.3 km/s, beneath Goiás magmatic arc on the western side, to 6.4 km/s, below Goiás massif in the central portion and the foreland fold-and-thrust belt on the eastern side. The behaviour of the lower crust layer allows an improved understanding of regional gravimetric features of the central and northern sectors of Tocantins Province and suggests subduction of the Amazon plate in Central Brazil. In the southeastern sector, the refraction experiment resulted in the detection of a thinner crust (38 km) below Brasília fold belt and a thicker crust (41 km) below Paraná basin and São Francisco craton (42 km). The upper crust beneath Paraná Basin is around 20 km thick, whereas it is less than 10 km thick below the craton. These results bring new insights into the geological history of the central and southeastern sectors of Tocantins Province.Gravimetric measurements in the central sector of Tocantins Province delineate a high and a low anomaly separated by a steep gradient with a NE direction. The axis of the gradient seems to bend still further to NE in the northern sector of that province, whereas the gravimetric high continues northwards, defining a separation between them. This suggests that those features belong to different tectonic processes that occurred during Tocantins Province orogenesis. The gravimetric model, which incorporates seismically resolved structure beneath Tocantins Province, better matches the observed gravimetric data.Although tectonic movements have only been monitored with high-precision GPS for short time interval (1999–2001), the results suggest observable deformations. The main seismicity of Central Brazil, the Goiás–Tocantins seismic belt, seems to be spatially associated with the large gravimetric high anomaly and with the observed tectonic deformation.  相似文献

Evaluation of the coupled heat transfer, water flow and stress changes in the engineered clay barrier is an important issue in the performance assessment of the high‐level radioactive waste disposal. To demonstrate the function of the engineered barrier system, the large‐scale experiment is conducted, which is called Big Bentonite facility (BIG‐BEN). The facility consists of an electric heater surrounded by glass beads, carbon steel overpack, buffer material and man‐made rock. The buffer is a mixture of bentonite and sand. The heater is operated at 0·8 kW. Water is injected from the interface between the buffer and the man‐made rocks at the pressure of 0·05 MPa. The duration of the experiment is 20 months. The change in temperature and swelling pressure are continuously monitored and gravimetric water content is measured by sampling. The coupled thermal, hydraulic and mechanical processes are simulated with a finite element code THAMES, which can simulate the fully coupled phenomena in the saturated and unsaturated clay under anisothermal condition. To examine the validity of the code, all the parameters used in the model are evaluated from the other laboratory tests. The simulated results are compared with the measured ones without calibration of the parameter values using the results from the BIG‐BEN experiment. It can be concluded that the changes in temperature and gravimetric water content within the buffer can be simulated reasonably well and that the mechanical effect such as swelling pressure is difficult to realize. Through recent developments in absolute and relative techniques, gravimetry has reached an accuracy of a few hundredths to a few tenths of μm s−2 *in small or large-scale networks, respectively. Consequently, gravimetric techniques can now be employed as one efficient tool for detecting vertical crustal movements. Gravity data are necessary for converting the results of geometric levelling to heights defined in the gravity field, and—by repeated surveys—to control time variations of the height-reference surface. More important is the use of repeated gravity surveys for strengthening and partly replacing levelling, being a time-consuming procedure with unfavourable error propagation over larger distances. The successful application of observed gravity variations with time in the detection of vertical crustal movements depends on the reliability of the conversion factor between gravity and height changes, and on the accuracy of the gravity measurements. The conversion factor should be determined through simultaneous levelling and gravimetry, in representative parts of the survey region. Strategies for establishing gravimetric control are changing now with the availability of transportable absolute gravity meters, and the possibility of accurately calibrating relative instruments and observing small gravity differences with feed-back-systems. Consequently, more attention has to be given now to disturbing effects of environmental character, such as microseismics, atmospheric pressure and groundwater table variations, and to periodic effects such as gravimetric earth tides and polar motion.  相似文献

Geological cross sections, based as far as possible on the latest data, are then presented in detail. In the geophysical part the most important results of seismic, gravimetric and magnetic work have been compiled. The results of an interdisciplinary research program on the Gran Bajo del Gualicho (Rio Negro, Argentina) are reported. Geological, morphological, gravimetric, and geochemical studies provide the basis for a reconstruction of the possible origin and evolution of this endorheic depression. On the basis of the available data, the hypothesis is advanced that the depression had a tectonic origin (according to NNW-SSE and ENE-WSW tectonic lines) and subsequently was shaped by exogenous forces that obscured the original fault scarps and caused the depression to assume its present characteristics.  相似文献

本文通过对航磁和重力资料的分析和研究,对民和盆地基底结构及起伏形态、构造特征提出了一些看法,并动用地球物理场特征加经描述。认为永登 凹陷是盆地内最深的凹陷,这一发现将为寻找油气指出方向。同时结合重力资料对侏罗系的厚度和分布范围进行了确定,为以些为目的层的油气勘探提供了参考依据。文中还对盆地的构造发展及盖层的发育特点进行了探讨。  相似文献

Aerogeophysical and gravimetric survey data on the Central Aldan block, Aldan-Stanovoy shield have been summarized; a map of the extensiveness of the Precambrian granitoid magmatism has been drawn; the association of ore districts encompassing large deposits with the margins of the extensive areas of Precambrian granitoids has been recognized; the 3-D density modeling of the lithosphere of this block has been accomplished; the roots of the Mesozoic alkaline massifs down to a depth of 100–150 km have been traced, and the telemagmatic nature of the large gold-uranium deposits related to these massifs has been defined.  相似文献

针对甘肃平凉产钙基天然膨润土进行不同钠化试剂、反应时间,反应介质、温度等条件的钠化工艺研究,得出最佳钠化合成工艺,并制得十六烷基氯化吡啶(CPC)改性膨润土.研究该有机改性膨润土红外光谱、X射线衍射、热重分析及分散性结果表明,插层剂CPC已进入膨润土的片层同.使有机改性膨润土的层间距由1.04 nm增加到2.11nm,热失重率达17%,新型有机改性膨润土在有机介质中表现出很好的分散性.  相似文献
