Mortality of larval coon-stripe shrimp, Pandalus danae, was related to labile copper and the copper complexing capacity of sea water, as measured by differential pulse Anodic Stripping Voltammetry (ASV). In nominal treatments of control, 5 and 10μg/litre Cu which contained less than 1·0μg/litre ASV labile Cu, zoeal development was usually complete. In treatments of 20 and 50μg/litre Cu which contained more than 7·0μg/litre ASV labile Cu, most larvae died while in the first zoeal stage. ASV labile Cu was related to the copper complexing capacity of sea water. Copper toxicity at less than 1·0 μg/litre ASV labile Cu is indicated by moulting delay and apparent Cu accumulation in zoea of the 5 and 10μg/litre Cu nominal treatments.  相似文献

This paper reports on a study of the toxicity of copper to three species of bivalve of commercial food value, Anadara granosa (Linnaeus), Meretrix casta, Deshayes and Crassostrea madrasensis (Preston) inhibiting the Vellar estuary at Porto Novo (southern India). The LC50 values were estimated as 60 μg Cu/litre for A. granosa, 72 μg Cu/litre for M. casta and 88 μg Cu/litre for C. madrasensis subjected to 96-h static bioassay tests after acclimation for a period of four days in the laboratory. The animals selected for study ranged in length from 29 to 44 mm in A. granosa, from 25 to 42 mm in M. casta and from 31 to 115 mm in C. madrasensis. The experiments were conducted at 25% salinity with pH 8·0 ± 0·1 at a temperature of 27°C ± 0·5°C. The revival rates of bivalves which survived exposure to the LC50 concentrations for the 96-h period (when marked and released in the natural environment) were 67% for A. granosa, and C. madrasensis and 83% for M. casta. The LT50 values for the three bivalves at different concentrations of the metal were also calculated.  相似文献

Chlorination by-products (CBPs) are formed as a result of the cnlorination of power station cooling water for anti-fouling purposes. Their production was studied at 10 coastal power stations in the UK, France and The Netherlands. Three categories of CBPs were determined: trihalomethanes; haloacetonitriles; and halophenols. Bromoform was the CBP most abundantly present in the effluents of all 10 power stations. At a mean chlorine dosage of 0.5–1.5 mg/litre (as Cl2) the mean bromoform concentration was 16.32 ± 2.10 μg/litre. The CBP found in second highest concentrations was dibromoacetonitrile (DBAN) with mean concentrations of 1.48 ± 0.56 μg/litre. Other CBPs detected were dibromochloromethane, bromodichloromethane and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol; concentrations of these three compounds were very low (< 1 μg/litre). At those sites at which bromoform was measured in the dispersing effluent plume it was found to behave as a conservative parameter (Significant direct correlation with plume ΔT).  相似文献

The marine biogeochemistry of pure pentachlorophenol was studied relative to a control treatment at a scale which provided a good model for the pelagic planktonic environment (70 m3 polyethylene bags). Pentachlorophenol that was dispersed at concentrations of 10 and 100 μg/litre showed identical relative rates of decrease over 25 days to concentrations 32·8% and 31·1%, respectively, of the initial concentrations. No bioaccumulation by phytoplankton or zooplankton was observed and pentachlorophenol removal by adsorption (by particulates, zooplankton or the enclosure walls) was insignificant. The log of the pentachlorophenol concentration was significantly correlated to the hours of bright sunshine up to Day 18, after which the photolysis efficiency decreased as the proportion of pentachlorophenol exposed to sunlight decreased. The results imply a long residence time for pentachlorophenol in deeper waters outside the photolysis zone. A persistent reduction in the primary production and production per unit carbon was observed at 100 μg/litre and, when coupled to the reproducible demise of the centric diatom Skeletonema costatum in culture and the spiked enclosures, suggests that pentachlorophenol inhibits phytoplankton growth.  相似文献

Sediment samples were collected at stations along cross-shelf transects in Onslow Bay, North Carolina, during two cruises in 1984 and 1985. Station depths ranged from 11 to 285 m. Sediment chlorophyll a concentrations ranged from 0·06 to 1·87 μg g−1 sediment (mean, 0·55), or 2·6–62·0 mg m2. Areal sediment chlorophyll a exceeded water column chlorophyll a a at 16 of 17 stations, especially at inshore and mid-shelf stations. Sediment ATP concentrations ranged from 0 to 0·67 μg g−1 sediment (mean, 0·28). Values for both biomass indicators were lowest in the depth range including the shelf break (50–99 m). Organic carbon contents of the sediments were uniformly low across the shelf, averaging 0·159% by weight. Photography of the sediments revealed extensive patches of microalgae on the sediment surface. Our data suggest that viable benthic microalgae occur across the North Carolina continental shelf. The distribution of benthic macroflora on the North Carolina shelf indicates that sufficient light and nutrients are available to support primary production out to the shelf break. Frequent storm-induced perturbations do not favour settling of phytoplankton, an alternative explanation for the presence of microalgal pigments in the sediments. Therefore, we propose that a distinct, productive benthic microflora exists across the North Carolina continental shelf.  相似文献

To identify some specific effects of organic contaminants on fisheries in an urbanized estuary we compared the reproductive success of starry flounder from San Francisco Bay with concentrations of tissue contaminants and hepatic mixed-function oxidase (MFO) activity. We found significantly lower (P < 0·05) sediment concentrations of total identified polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the less urbanized San Pablo Bay (SP) area (Fig. 1) than in the more urbanized central bay (CB) stations (Table 1). For flounder in early gametogenesis (August and September) the SP fish (n = 20) had significantly lower (P < 0·01) liver concentrations of Aroclor 1260 (0·34 ± 0·14 μg/g) than those at the CB stations: Berkeley (BK, n = 20, 1·6 ± 1·6 μg/g); Oakland (OK, n = 16, 2·3 ± 2·8 μg/g); and Alameda (AL, n = 4, 2·2 ± 1 μg/g). A similar pattern existed for DDT concentrations: SP = 0·2 ± 0·16 μg/g; BK = 0·1 ± 0·34 μg/g; OK = 0·4 ± 0·53 μg/g; and AL = 0·4 ± 0·33 μg/g. Total PAHs in livers were as follows: SP = 0·14 μg/g; BK = 2·6 μg/g; OK = 1·4 μg/g; and AL = 14 μg/g. Although gonad index, liver index, and presence of fin rot are inversely related to aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase (AHH) activity, healthy fish in a similar reproductive state have lower AHH activities in the SP area. For example, in August and September, 1984, mean AHH activities were as follows: SP = 203 ± 89, and CB = 355 ± 200 pmol 3-OH-B[a]P mg microsomal protein min. We found a log-linear relationship for AHH activity and its percent inhibition by 7,8-benzoflavone (10−4m) and only a few fish from SP showed enhanced AHH activity after addition of 7,8-benzoflavone. This suggests that most of the starry flounder in San Francisco Bay are induced.  相似文献

Concentrations of tributyltin (TBT), dibutyltin (DBT), inorganic and total tin have been measured in water, sediments and deposit feeding clams, Scrobicularia plana, from 25 estuarine locations in England and Wales, in order to compare the bioavailability of different forms of the element. Abnormally high tin values in Scrobicularia from harbours and areas of high boating activity testify to the high bioaccumulation potential of organotins, notably TBT derived from anti-fouling paints, relative to inorganic tin.Infaunal deposit-feeding bivalves consistently contain higher concentrations of TBT than other benthic organisms indicating that sediments may be an important route for uptake. Significant correlations between sediment TBT values and residues in clams such as S. plana (r = 0·81, p < 0·001) support this hypothesis. Direct evidence of the bioaccumulation of sediment-bound TBT is provided from laboratory experiments in which Scrobicularia were exposed to TBT in water and in sediments, either separately or in combination. The results of these experiments clearly demonstrate a predominantly particulate component for TBT uptake in clams. The kinetics of TBT accumulation and elimination were studied in Scrobicularia exposed to sediments containing 0·3 and 1·0 μg/g TBT (as tin). Equilibrium concentrations in tissue are approached after 40 days.Sediments containing 10 μg/g TBT are acutely toxic to S. plana, although such concentrations are only likely to occur close to dockyards and large marinas. Preliminary laboratory and field observations suggest however, that clam populations could be affected at TBT concentrations in sediments of 0·3 μg/g and possibly lower.  相似文献

The interaction of selenium with mercury was studied in the shrimp Palaemon elegans. The release of 203HgCl2 (5·0 μg Hg per gramme body weight) from shrimp pretreated with selenium (SeO2 doses of 1·97, 3·95 and 7·90 μg Se per gramme fresh weight) was significantly decreased compared with the control group to which only 5·0 μg Hg/g had been administered. In the presence of HgCl2 (5·0 μg Hg per gramme fresh weight) the release of 75Se also diminished significantly at the higher stable Se pretreated dose (7·90 μg Se/g) while, at a lower selenium concentration, the release was not statistically different. Analyses for stable Hg and Se confirmed the decrease in rate of selenium loss in the presence of mercury which had been demonstrated with radiotracers.A dose of 7·9 μg Se per gramme fresh weight injected 12 h before exposure of the shrimp to the various mercuric chloride solutions did not produce a significant difference in the 24 h LC50 compared with the group not pretreated with selenium. However, during exposure to mercury at 3·8 mg/litre, the median lethal time (LT50) for the shrimp pretreated for 4 days with sublethal selenium (6·9 and 10·5 mg Se/litre) was delayed (19·2 and 33·2 h) compared with the group which was not pretreated. The results are discussed in relation to the role of selenium in the acutely toxic effects of inorganic mercury.  相似文献

Amphipod larvae, Gammarus oceanicus, were exposed for 8 weeks to bis(tributyltin) oxide (TBTO) or tributyltin fluoride (TBTF), or for 5 weeks to leachates from tributyltin-containing antibiofouling paints. No larvae survived 8 weeks' exposure to 3 μg/litre TBTO or TBTF. Differential larval survival occurred during exposure to 0·3 gmg/litre of these same compounds. Paint leachates were shown to cause similar toxicity responses at comparable aqueous tributyltin concentrations. An examination of sublethal responses showed slight decreases in growth for larvae exposed to TBTO and to paint leachates, although responses at tributyltin levels below 1 μg/litre were not marked. Whole-animal oxygen consumption rates were not affected by low tributyltin exposure levels. While these studies demonstrate low level toxicity of tributyltins, effects on oxygen consumption and growth do not indicate a mode of action for these compounds.  相似文献

Crangon crangon (L.) (Crustacea: Decapoda) were subjected to three metals (Cd, Cu and Zn) at respective concentrations (0·35, 1·6 and 14·4mg/litre) that would induce 50% mortality in 5–6 days. Significantly different (P < 0·05) rates of mortality occurred in the three groups, although their ET50's were almost identical. No moultstage-dependent mortality was observed for Cd, but in Cu and Zn the post-moult stages (A and B) were more susceptible than either the intermoult (Ca and Cb) or premoult (D0–D4) stages. No significant (P> 0·05) sex- or size-dependent mortality was evident at the tested concentrations of these metals.Feeding and ecdysis were inhibited in all metals after day 3 and development from one moult-stage to the next was greatly reduced in Cd.Possible modes of toxicity have been discussed in terms of the physiological condition inferred from the moult-stage at the time of death.  相似文献

Concentrations of bacteria, chlorophyll a, and several dissolved organic compounds were determined during 11 tidal cycles throughout the year in a high and a low elevation marsh of a brackish tidal estuary. Mean bacterial concentrations were slightly higher in flooding (7·1 × 106 cells ml−1) than in ebbing waters (6·5 × 106 cells ml−1), and there were no differences between marshes. Mean chlorophyll a concentrations were 36·7 μg l−1 in the low marsh and 20·4 μg l−1 in the high marsh. Flux calculations, based on tidal records and measured concentrations, suggested a small net import of bacterial and algal biomass into both marshes. Over the course of individual tidal cycles, concentrations of all parameters were variable and not related to tidal stage. Heterotrophic activity measured by the uptake of 3H-thymidine, was found predominantly in the smallest particle size fractions (< 1·0 μm). Thymidine uptake was correlated with temperature (r = 0·48, P < 0·01), and bacterial productivity was estimated to be 7 to 42 μg Cl−1 day−1.  相似文献

In September 1994 and 1995, scientists from the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) and the Australian Geological Survey Organization (AGSO) conducted surveys aboard the RV Lady Basten to determine the dispersion, fates and effects of produced formation water (PFW) discharged from the ‘ Harriet A ’ oil production platform near the Montebello Islands. This report is one of four related papers and describes the non-volatile hydrocarbon chemistry studies. The dispersion of the PFW into dissolved and particulate fractions of seawater were measured using moored high volume water samplers, surface screen samplers and moored and drifting sediment traps. Bio-accumulation was studied using transplanted oysters, and dispersion measured into sediment with benthic grabs. Results showed enrichment in non-volatile hydrocarbons in surface microlayer samples to a distance of 1·8 km in the direction of tidal flow. Concentrations in surface microlayers near the platform varied by an order of magnitude and corresponded to when a surface slick was visible or not visible. Concentrations of oil in seawater ranged from 2·0 to 8·5 μg l−1at near stations to 1·3 μg l−1at 1·8 km. Water column samples showed the processes of desorption from particles for soluble components occur within the range of 1·8 km. Most particulate hydrocarbons drop out of suspension within c. 1 to 2 km from the platform. Fluxes of particulate hydrocarbons through the water column at c. 1 km, as estimated by moored sediment traps in 1995, were 138 to 148 ng cm−2day−1. A decrease in sediment concentrations within c. 1 km of the platform was measured as 2·45±1·29 μg g−1dry wt (n=15) in 1994 to 0·86±0·54 μg g−1dry wt (n=21) in 1995, after the platform installed a centrifugal separator in the discharge treatment process. Thus the residence time of this relatively low molecular weight oil was estimated in the coarse aerobic sands surrounding the platform to be less than one year. Oysters suspended near the platform bio-accumulated hydrocarbons and other lipophilic organics in their tissues. Uptake rates and bio-concentration factors of hydrocarbons indicated potential toxicity at the near-field stations within c. 1 km radius.A mass balance was constructed to show the partitioning of the input of hydrocarbons from the PFW into the surrounding marine ecosystem. The rates of dissipation processes were estimated as follows: dilution from tidal currents>degradation in the water column>sedimentation>evaporation. The calculations based on maximum concentrations measured in the environmental samples accounted for 85% of the daily input suspended within a 1 km radius. It is estimated that the potential zone of toxic influence in the water column extends to a distance of approximately 1 km. Concentrations of oil in sediments were too low to indicate potential toxicity. By the collaborative application of oceanographic and geochemical techniques to marine environmental problems, we endeavour to provide effective feedback to the oil industry to gauge the effectiveness of their operational strategies in minimizing impact in these pristine regions.  相似文献

We have shown that municipal wastewater and sewage sludge are contaminated by organotins. Here, we investigate the behaviour and fate of tributyltin (TBT) in laboratory-scale sewage sludge treatment at various conditions including both aerobic and anaerobic, and mesophilic and thermophilic. Organotins were determined by capillary GC-FPD. Fresh raw sewage sludge was stored in a tank that was connected to five chemostats maintained at different conditions. Raw sludge contained TBT, dibutyltin (DBT) and monobutyltin (MBT) residues in the range of 0·28 to 0·83 mg/kg (dry weight). The volumetric TBT concentration was 10·5 μg/litre in the influent, and ranged from 7·4 to 8·3 μg/litre in the effluent of the different chemostats. In the anaerobic mesophilic treatment, concentrations of TBT did not decrease with increasing sludge residence time, DBT increased and MBT showed no clear trend. The DBT increase is suggested to be due to leaching from the PVC walls of the chemostats, and not to degradation of TBT alone. The TBT reduction did not show significant differences between the mesophilic and thermophilic anaerobic fermentors. These findings indicate that the degradation of TBT during sludge treatment is only low under all conditions tested.  相似文献

The acute toxicity of bromochlorinated estuarine water (ca. 20%) was determined for several estuarine organisms. The most sensitive species were oysters (Crassostrea virginica, larvae and juveniles) and copepods (Acartia tonsa) with 48-h LC50's of 0·10 to 0·21 mg BrCl/litre. Palaemonetes pugio was most tolerant with a 96-h LC50 of 0·70 mg BrCl/litre. The fish species tested (Menidia menidia, Brevoortia tyrannus and Leiostomus xanthurus) all had a 96-h LC50 of 0·21–0·23 mg BrCl/litre.The BrCl toxicity data are compared with Cl2 toxicity data for the same species. When the LC50's are expressed as equivalents per litre, BrCl is found to be two to four times less toxic than Cl2. The ranking of species in terms of sensitivity is the same for both disinfectants. Some data are provided concerning the decay rates of BrCl and Cl2 in estuarine water. BrCl was found to decay more rapidly than Cl2 at higher ammonia levels (0·25 mg NH4-N/litre). The question of chemical speciation is discussed with particular reference to the differential toxicities.  相似文献

The bi-cyclic aromatic hydrocarbon naphthalene (N) and its alkylated derivatives 2-methylnaphthalene (MN), 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene (DMN) and 2,3,5-trimethylnaphthalene (TMN) were used to investigate possible relationships between increased methylation and toxicity during acute high level and chronic low level exposure experiments using the calanoid copepod Eurytemora affinis Poppe. The 24-h LC50 levels determined indicated an approximate twofold increase in toxicity per methyl group addition: N-3798 μg/litre; MN-1499 μg/litre; DMN-852 μg/litre and TMN-316 μg/litre. Low level chronic exposure of E. affinis to the various naphthalenes in sea water concentrations of about 10 μg/litre for the duration of their adult life (maximum twenty-nine days) resulted in significant reductions in length of life, total numbers of nauplii produced and mean brood size. Exposure to all the naphthalenes at this level (10 μg/litre) resulted in reduced rates of egg production which were, on average, about 50% of those of control animals. Results are discussed in relation to previous work on the fate and effect of petroleum hydrocarbons in marine copepods.  相似文献

Particles and particulate phosphorus (Pp) were studied along 4°W in the tropical south Atlantic, between Ivory Coast and 24°S. Seston concentrations in the upper layers (0–150 m) are about 0.350 mg/l; they decrease in the intermediate layers (0.252 mg/l between 150 and 500 m) and lower layers (0.215 mg/l below 500 m). Along 4°W it is possible to define some geographical zones; thus, the South equatorial counter current waters are shown to be characterized by very weak concentrations of particulate phosphorus (< 0.020 μg-at/l). Ratios between particulate phosphorus, suspended matter and chlorophyll a have been computed: Part/Pp is about 2; the relationship Chl-a-Pp is linear for Chl-a concentrations lower than 1.5 μg/l, increasing exponentially for Chl-a values increasing from 1.5 μg/l to 35 μg/l.

In May and September 1999 11 stations were sampled in the southern and central North Sea, located in the German Bight, eastern Oyster Ground and Dogger Bank. The study focused on the influence of particle mixing on transport of chlorophyll a to deeper sediment layers and vertical bacterial distribution (max. DEPTH=10 cm). The sampling stations were chosen to reflect a gradient in environmental conditions in the North Sea. The sampling stations differed in respect to redox potential (eH up to −243 mV in the German Bight and up to 274 mV in the offshore regions), silt content (up to 54% in the German Bight and 0·34% at the northern Dogger Bank) and different proportion of fresh organic material on total organic matter content (C/N ratios ranging from 9·27 in the German Bight up to 1·72 in the offshore sediments). Although bacterial densities (8·55×109 g−1in the German Bight up to 0·35×109 g−1in offshore sediments) were significantly correlated to chlorophyll a content in the sediment (P<0·01), inconsistencies in the temporal pattern of both variables in the surficial sediment layer suggested, that the dynamics of bacterial densities is generally controlled by food supply but also by other variables. The chlorophyll a content in the surficial sediments of the German Bight (up to 1·84 μg g−1) was significantly higher than in the Oyster Ground (up to 0·58 μg g−1) and the Dogger Bank area (up to 0·68 μg g−1). With increasing chlorophyll a input to the benthic realm a subsequent enhanced burial of this compound into deeper sediment layers was expected either by biological (bioturbation) or by physical sediment mixing. However, the vertical profile of chlorophyll a decreased steeply in the sediments of the German Bight. Contrary, subsurface peaks were measured in the offshore areas. It was concluded from these results, that the vertical distribution of organic matter in sediments is less limited by the quantitative input from the water column but concomitant with particle mixing itself. The extent and possible mechanisms of particle mixing in the different study areas in relation to specific environmental factors is discussed.  相似文献

The effect of dissolved petroleum hydrocarbons in the environment on phytoplankton biomass measured as chlorophyll a was studied near the oil tanker route in the southern Bay of Bengal. In the transect from 5° N, 77° E to 5° N, 87° E the concentrations of dissolved petroleum hydrocarbons were negatively correlated with phytoplankton biomass, whereas in the 0° N, 87° E to 1° N, 79° E transect they were positively correlated with phytoplankton biomass. The mean petroleum hydrocarbon concentrations in the two transects were 12·12 ± 4·67 μg litre−1 and 11·23 ± 4·5 μg litre−1, respectively. It is surmised that the effect of dissolved petroleum hydrocarbons on phytoplankton biomass varies depending on the nature rather than the quantity of petroleum hydrocarbons present. Culture studies with unialgal Nitzschia sp. in seawater collected from selected stations in the study area as well as in artificial seawater spiked with the water-soluble petroleum hydrocarbon fraction of light Arabian Crude support this.  相似文献

Young Sound is a deep-sill fjord in NE Greenland (74°N). Sea ice usually begins to form in late September and gains a thickness of 1.5 m topped with 0–40 cm of snow before breaking up in mid-July the following year. Primary production starts in spring when sea ice algae begin to flourish at the ice–water interface. Most biomass accumulation occurs in the lower parts of the sea ice, but sea ice algae are observed throughout the sea ice matrix. However, sea ice algal primary production in the fjord is low and often contributes only a few percent of the annual phytoplankton production. Following the break-up of ice, the immediate increase in light penetration to the water column causes a steep increase in pelagic primary production. Usually, the bloom lasts until August–September when nutrients begin to limit production in surface waters and sea ice starts to form. The grazer community, dominated by copepods, soon takes advantage of the increased phytoplankton production, and on an annual basis their carbon demand (7–11 g C m−2) is similar to phytoplankton production (6–10 g C m−2). Furthermore, the carbon demand of pelagic bacteria amounts to 7–12 g C m−2 yr−1. Thus, the carbon demand of the heterotrophic plankton is approximately twice the estimated pelagic primary production, illustrating the importance of advected carbon from the Greenland Sea and from land in fuelling the ecosystem. In the shallow parts of the fjord (<40 m) benthic primary producers dominate primary production. As a minimum estimate, a total of 41 g C m−2 yr−1 is fixed by primary production, of which phytoplankton contributes 15%, sea ice algae <1%, benthic macrophytes 62% and benthic microphytes 22%. A high and diverse benthic infauna dominated by polychaetes and bivalves exists in these shallow-water sediments (<40 m), which are colonized by benthic primary producers and in direct contact with the pelagic phytoplankton bloom. The annual benthic mineralization is 32 g C m−2 yr−1 of which megafauna accounts for 17%. In deeper waters benthic mineralization is 40% lower than in shallow waters and megafauna, primarily brittle stars, accounts for 27% of the benthic mineralization. The carbon that escapes degradation is permanently accumulated in the sediment, and for the locality investigated a rate of 7 g C m−2 yr−1 was determined.A group of walruses (up to 50 adult males) feed in the area in shallow waters (<40 m) during the short, productive, ice-free period, and they have been shown to be able to consume <3% of the standing stock of bivalves (Hiatella arctica, Mya truncata and Serripes Groenlandicus), or half of the annual bivalve somatic production. Feeding at greater depths is negligible in comparison with their feeding in the bivalve-rich shallow waters.  相似文献

The combined effect of copper and North Sea crude oil is tested on juvenile Mytilus edulis. Dissolved CuSO4 x 5H2O is added to the seawater in concentrations of 3 and 6 μg Cu litre-1. Crude oil, microencapsulated in a gelatine/acacia structure, is added in concentrations of 1·5 and 3·0 mg oil litre-1. The shell length growth is measured every 24 h with laser diffraction. Linear effects were observed for single components within 24 h of exposure and significant antagonistic interaction appeared within 48 h. Reduced growth rate coincided with reduced filtering and defaecation, and reduced byssus production.  相似文献
