Pb and Co removal from paint industries effluent using wood ash   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
The release of heavy metals into the environment is a worldwide major concern. Different studies have demonstrated that natural agents have a high removal capacity for divalent heavy metal ions. Wood ash is a natural adsorbent and, in comparison with others, has a very low price. In this study, the removal of heavy metals (Pb and Co) from Binalood paint industry (Kerman, Iran) effluent was investigated in batch condition. Pb and Co measurement in samples were done with atomic absorption equipment and test methods were adapted from standard methods for the examination of water and wastewater. The effect of pH and the amount of adsorbent was determined and different adsorption isotherms were also obtained. This study shows that the adsorption process follows the adsorption Langmuir isotherm. The amount of wood ash has a great role in the adsorption rate and adsorption rate increased as wood ash increased. In the study, the reactions reached equilibrium in 3 h contact time. The maximum Pb removal efficiency was 96.1 % at pH 2 with a contact time of 3 h and 100 g/L wood ash and the maximum Co removal efficiency was 99 % at pH 2 with a contact time of 3 h and 100 g/L wood ash. According to the results, wood ash is recommended as a low cost and available adsorbent to remove Pb and Co from municipal and industrial wastewaters.  相似文献

In the present study, the retention capacity of carbonaceous material obtained from the diesel engine exhaust mufflers for Cr(VI) removal has been investigated. The physicochemical properties such as density, pH of aqueous slurry, pH at point of zero charge, ash content, moisture content, volatile matter, surface area, scanning electron microscopy and electron dispersive spectroscopy of the carbonaceous material were determined. The capacity of adsorbent for removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solution was observed under different experimental condition like contact time, initial concentration of metal ions, pH and temperatures on the adsorption capacity of the adsorbent. Maximum adsorption of Cr(VI) ions was found at low pH. The adsorption process was found to follow second-order kinetics. The rate constant was evaluated at different temperatures along with other thermodynamic parameters like activation energy, Gibbs free energy change, enthalpy change and entropy change. Both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms were used to describe the adsorption equilibrium of carbonaceous material at different temperatures. Langmuir isotherm shows better fit than Freundlich isotherm at given conditions. The result shows that low-cost carbonaceous material from diesel engine exhaust mufflers can be efficiently used for wastewater treatment containing Cr(VI) ions.  相似文献

The discharge of industrial effluents containing hexavalent chromium can be very harmful for the environment. Therefore, Cr(VI) should be removed from contaminated water, and especially from wastewater, to prevent its discharge into the environment. This study is aimed at analyzing the factors that affect the removal of Cr(VI) with the use of almond green hull and ash adsorbent. The effects of pH (2–10), adsorbent dose (2–24 g/L), Cr(VI) concentration (10–100 mg/L), exposure time (1–60 min), and temperature (5–50 °C) were examined. The surface morphology, pore size of adsorbent surfaces were characterized with SEM, EDX, FTIR. Maximum removal occurred at pH = 2. Results showed that the removal yield increased with the rise of exposure time and temperature. The data indicate that due to limited site on adsorbent surface, the removal efficiency decreased as initial Cr(VI) concentration increased. When the adsorbent dose was increased, the removal yield increased in the case of the bioadsorbent as well; however, in the ash adsorbent, there was an increase followed by a decreasing trend. The study highlights that almond green hull can be more efficient than its ash in the removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solution. As a general result of study, it can be argued that almond green hull bioadsorbent and the obtained carbon are able to remove Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions; thus, they can be used as efficient and economical substitutes for existing adsorbents like activated carbon, for the removal of chromium from polluted aqueous solutions.  相似文献

Adsorption of hexavalent chromium from aqueous solutions by wheat bran   总被引:7,自引:6,他引:1
In this research, adsorption of chromium (VI) ions on wheat bran has been studied through using batch adsorption techniques. The main objectives of this study are to 1) investigate the chromium adsorption from aqueous solution by wheat bran, 2) study the influence of contact time, pH, adsorbent dose and initial chromium concentration on adsorption process performance and 3) determine appropriate adsorption isotherm and kinetics parameters of chromium (VI) adsorption on wheat bran. The results of this study showed that adsorption of chromium by wheat bran reached to equilibrium after 60 min and after that a little change of chromium removal efficiency was observed. Higher chromium adsorption was observed at lower pHs, and maximum chromium removal (87.8 %) obtained at pH of 2. The adsorption of chromium by wheat bran decreased at the higher initial chromium concentration and lower adsorbent doses. The obtained results showed that the adsorption of chromium (VI) by wheat bran follows Langmuir isotherm equation with a correlation coefficient equal to 0.997. In addition, the kinetics of the adsorption process follows the pseudo second-order kinetics model with a rate constant value of 0.131 g/mg.min The results indicate that wheat bran can be employed as a low cost alternative to commercial adsorbents in the removal of chromium (VI) from water and wastewater.  相似文献

Tropical peat soils present higher ash content than those generated at temperate climate areas. Therefore, this study evaluated the characteristics of a Brazilian organic soil (OS), commercialized as peat, as well as its capacity in removing Cr(VI) from contaminated waters. The OS is composed of 35.5 wt% of organic matter and 56 wt% of inorganic fraction (ash), which is formed by minerals and phytoliths rich in silica (29.2 wt%) and alumina (23.6 wt%). The Cr(VI) removal tests were carried out in batch and column systems using OS and solutions of Cr(VI) prepared with distilled water and groundwater. Batch tests revealed that the organic substances in the OS caused the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III), with an efficiency depending on solution pH. At pH 5.0 the Cr(VI) removal was 0.45 mg g?1 in 24 h; whereas at pH 2.0, this removal increased to 1.10 mg g?1. Since this redox reaction is very slow, the removal of Cr(VI) at pH 5.0 increased to around 2 mg g?1 after 5 days. The removal of Cr(VI) was more effective in the column tests than in the batch test due to the greater solid/solution ratio, and their half-lives were 4.4 and 26.2 h, respectively. Chemical analysis indicated that Cr(VI) was reduced by the humic substances of OS, followed by the precipitation and/or adsorption of Cr(III) into the organic and inorganic components, as anatase. The presence of Cr(III) increased the stability of anatase structure, avoiding its transformation into rutile, even after being heated at 800 °C/2 h.  相似文献

The removal of hexavalent chromium from wastewater streams has received an considerable attention in recent years, since it can cause harmful effects on the environment. Several approaches, including adsorption, are recognized to tackle this problem, but unfortunately most of these processes are impressed with practical conditions of the experiments. The main objective of this study was to recognize applicable conditions for Cr(VI) removal from an industrial drainage using nature-derived adsorbents (brown coal and modified zeolite) and to make the process more adaptive by using adsorbents conjointly. Batch experiments were carried out by agitating Cr(VI) stock solution with adsorbents at room temperature. The influence of main operating parameters was explored, and the best proportion of the adsorbents was determined. Maximum sorption of Cr(VI) onto brown coal was observed at pH = 4 by adding 60 g L?1 adsorbent to contaminated solution. In case of using zeolite, the modification process was required, and the pH indicated a weak influence in a wide range (2–8). Optimum dosage of modified zeolite for Cr(VI) removal was 10 g L?1. The hybrid application of adsorbents with the mass ratio of brown coal/modified zeolite at (3:1) was capable of removing more than 99% of Cr(VI) from contaminated wastewater in the natural pH range of the wastewater. The adsorption of Cr(VI) by brown coal and modified zeolite followed Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models, respectively. Sorption of Cr(VI) onto both brown coal and modified zeolite fitted well to pseudo-second-order rate reaction.  相似文献

The adsorption of cadmium from simulated mining wastewater by coal waste (CW) and calcination-modified coal waste (MCW) was investigated. Effects of pH, initial concentration, particle size of adsorbent, adsorbent dosage and temperature were studied in batch experiments. The adsorption efficiency for cadmium increased with increasing pH, and the optimum pH for cadmium adsorption onto MCW and CW was 6.0 and 6.5, respectively. Kinetic experiments showed that the adsorption equilibrium was reached within 120 min and followed pseudo-second-order model well. The adsorption isotherm data fit Langmuir and Freundlich models, and the adsorption capacity of cadmium on the two adsorbents increased with increasing temperature from 298 to 318 K. MCW had a higher adsorption capacity of cadmium than CW, because calcination treatment can make CW to have more loose structure and higher specific surface area. Thermodynamic parameters, the Gibbs free energy change (?G0), enthalpy change (?H0) and entropy change (?S0), were calculated and the results showed that the adsorption of cadmium on CW and MCW was spontaneous and endothermic. Fourier transform infrared studies indicated silanol and aluminol groups were responsible for cadmium binding. The desorption results indicated that the two adsorbents could be used repeatedly at least three times without significant decrease in the adsorption capacity for cadmium. The results suggested that modified CW could have high potential as low-cost adsorbent for cadmium removal.  相似文献

This work focused on the removal from water of arsenate in the 100 to 500 μg/L range using Fe-RH-MCM-41 immobilized on GAC by a colloidal impregnation method. A Response Surface Method (RSM) based on the Box–Behnken Design (BBD) was used to evaluate the effects of pH, adsorbent loading, and initial arsenate concentrations. The thermal stability of Fe-RH-MCM-41/GAC was greater than 460 °C because Fe-RH-MCM-41 and epoxy resin covered the GAC, preventing GAC weight loss. The rate and capacity for arsenate adsorption on Fe-RH-MCM-41/GAC were higher than for GAC. The effects of pH, adsorbent loading, and initial arsenate concentration showed significant effects on efficiency, in terms of percent arsenate removal. Significant interaction occurred as positive effects between arsenate and arsenate concentrations, and pH and arsenate concentrations, and as negative effects between pH and pH, adsorbent loading and adsorbent loading, and adsorbent loading and arsenate concentrations.  相似文献

The ability of light expanded clay aggregate to remove lead and cadmium from paint industry’s effluents was studied at different levels of adsorbent, contact time and pH in April 2008. For this purpose, lead and cadmium removal from paint industry effluents were studied in batch reactors. lead and cadmium measurements have been taken with non-flame atomic absorption techniques and test methods were adapted from 19th. Ed. of standard methods for the examination of water and wastewater. In this study, different amounts of Leca (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 g/L) were investigated. The amount of adsorbed lead and cadmium exposure to Leca increased from 1.41 to 3 mg/g and 0.22 to 0.75 mg/g, respectively. The maximum removal efficiency for Pb was 93.75 % at pH = 7 and exposure to 10 g/L of Leca, while for cadmium, it was nearly 89.7 % at the same condition. In this study, adsorption process of lead and cadmium was fitted with Freundlich adsorption isotherm (R2 Pb = 0.97 and R2 Cd = 0.98). The sufficient contact time was deemed 1–2 h for lead and cadmium. According to the results, Leca is recommended as a low cost and available adsorbent to remove lead and cadmium from industrial wastewater.  相似文献

Column flow-through experiments reacting wastewater solutions with sandy loam soil samples were performed to study heavy metal attenuation by two soils with different physical and chemical properties. Reacted soil columns were leached with synthetic acid rain to study the mobility of attenuated heavy metals under leaching conditions. This study demonstrates that cation exchange, surface adsorption, chelation with solid organic material, and precipitation were the important attenuation mechanisms for the heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Mo, Ph, and Zn). Adsorption on soil hydrous oxide surfaces was the primary attenuation mechanism for Cd and Zn in both soils, and for Cu in a soil with low organic matter content. Wastewater solution pH is also an important factor that influences the retention of heavy metals. Cadmium, Cu, Cr, and Zn became mobile after prolonged application of spiked wastewater solution, either through saturation of soil adsorption sites or due to decreasing pH. Only Cr, Pb, and Mo, which are attenuated primarily through precipitation, show significant net retention by soil. Acid rain water removed heavy metals left in the column residual pore solution and weakly sorbed heavy metals in the soils, and has the ability to mobilize some strongly attenuated heavy metals, especially when the soil organic matter content is high. The results have important applications in predicting heavy metal mobility in contaminated soil, the disposal of acid mine drainage, and assessing the risks of landfall leachate leakage.  相似文献

This study was focused on nettle ash as an alternative adsorbent for the removal of nickel (II) and cadmium (II) from wastewater. Batch experiments were conducted to determine the factors affecting adsorption of nickel (II) and cadmium (II). The adsorption process is affected by various parameters such as contact time, solution pH and adsorbent dose. The optimum pH required for maximum adsorption was found to be 6. The experimental data were tested using Langmuir, Freundlich and Tempkin equations. The data were fitted well to the Langmuir isotherm with monolayer adsorption capacity of 192.3 and 142.8 mg/g for nickel and cadmium, respectively. The adsorption kinetics were best described by the pseudo second order model. The cost of removal is expected to be quite low, as the adsorbent is cheap and easily available in large quantities. The present study showed that nettle ash was capable of removing nickel and cadmium ions from aqueous solution.  相似文献

The removal of poisonous Pb (II) from wastewater by different low-cost abundant adsorbents was investigated. Rice husks, maize cobs and sawdust, were used at different adsorbent/metal ion ratios. The influence of pH, contact time, metal concentration, adsorbent concentration on the selectivity and sensitivity of the removal process was investigated. The adsorption efficiencies were found to be pH dependent, increasing by increasing the solution pH in the range from 2.5 to 6.5. The equilibrium time was attained after 120 min and the maximum removal percentage was achieved at an adsorbent loading weight of 1.5 gm. The equilibrium adsorption capacity of adsorbents used for lead were measured and extrapolated using linear Freundlich, Langmuir and Temkin isotherms and the experimental data were found to fit the Temkin isotherm model.  相似文献

Granular activated carbon produced from palm kernel shell was used as adsorbent to remove copper, nickel and lead ions from a synthesized industrial wastewater.Laboratory experimental investigation was carried out to identify the effect of pH and contact time on adsorption of lead, copper and nickel from the mixed metals solution. Equilibrium adsorption experiments at ambient room temperature were carried out and fitted to Langmuir and Freundlich models. Results showed that pH 5 was the most suitable, while the maximum adsorbent capacity was at a dosage of 1 g/L, recording a sorption capacity of 1.337 mg/g for lead, 1.581 mg/g for copper and 0.130 mg/g for nickel. The percentage metal removal approached equilibrium within 30 min for lead, 75 min for copper and nickel, with lead recording 100 %, copper 97 % and nickel 55 % removal, having a trend of Pb2+ > Cu2+ > Ni2+. Langmuir model had higher R2 values of 0.977, 0.817 and 0.978 for copper, nickel and lead respectively, which fitted the equilibrium adsorption process more than Freundlich model for the three metals.  相似文献

Batch sorption system using co-immobilized (activated carbon and Bacillus subtilis) beads as adsorbent was investigated to remove Cr(VI) from aqueous solution. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis showed the functional groups of both bacteria and activated carbon in co-immobilized beads. Experiments were carried out as a function of contact time (5–300 min), initial metal concentration (50–200 mg L?1), pH (2–8), and adsorbent dose (0.2–1 g L?1). The maximum percentage of removal was found to be 99 %. Langmuir model showed satisfactory fit to the equilibrium adsorption data of co-immobilized beads. The kinetics of the adsorption followed pseudo-second-order rate expression, which demonstrates that chemisorption plays a significant role in the adsorption mechanism. The significant shift in the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy peaks and a Cr peak in the scanning electron microscope–energy dispersive spectroscopy spectra further confirmed the adsorption. The results indicate that co-immobilized beads can be used as an effective adsorbent for the removal of Cr(VI) from the aqueous solution.  相似文献

In the present research, the removal of lead(II) and copper(II) from aqueous solutions is studied, using SnO2 nanowires as new adsorbent on solid-phase extraction disk and compared with pine core and buttonwood as biosorbents. Batch adsorption experiments were performed as a function of pH, adsorption time, solute concentration and adsorbent dose for biosorbents. Also, the pH, transfer rate of solution and metal concentration were selected as experimental parameters for the removal of heavy metals by SnO2 nanowires. All of the parameters were optimized by experimental design method for sorbents. The experimental equilibrium adsorption data are tested for the Langmuir and Freundlich equations. Results indicate the following order to fit the isotherms: Langmuir > Freundlich, in case of lead and copper ions. The removal of Cu(II) and Pb(II) was performed by selected sorbents in the presence of interferences ions. This led to no remarkable decrease in the removal efficiency of SnO2 nanowires. Using the SnO2 nanowires in the wastewater treatment indicated 96.8 and 85.28% removal efficiency in only 7 min for Pb(II) and Cu(II), respectively. SnO2 nanowires were found as reusable sorbent. Therefore, SnO2 nanowires have a good potential for application in environmental protection.  相似文献

A novel adsorbent for heavy metal remediation in aqueous environments   总被引:9,自引:8,他引:1
The objective of this study was to investigate the possibility of using maize tassel as an alternative adsorbent for the removal of chromium (VI) and cadmium (II) ions from aqueous solutions. The effect of pH, solution temperature, contact time, initial metal ion concentration and adsorbent dose on the adsorption of chromium (VI) and cadmium (II) by tassel was investigated using batch methods. Adsorption for both chromium (VI) and cadmium (II) was found to be highly pH dependent compared to the other parameters investigated. Obtained results gave an adsorption capacity of 79.1 % for chromium (VI) at pH 2, exposure time of 1h at 25 °C. Maximum capacity of cadmium of 88 % was obtained in the pH range of 5-6 at 25 °C after exposure time of 1 h. The adsorption capacities of tassel for both chromium (VI) and cadmium (II) were found to be comparable to those of other commercial adsorbents currently in use for the removal of heavy metals from aqueous wastes. These results have demonstrated the immense potential of maize tassel as an alternative adsorbent for toxic metal ions remediation in polluted water and wastewater.  相似文献

The present study attempted to identify the efficient hazardous metal-removing sorbent from specific types of soil, upper and middle layer shirasu, shell fossil, tuff, akadama and kanuma soils of Japan by physico-chemical and metal (arsenic, cadmium and lead) removal characterizations. The physico-chemical characteristics of soil were evaluated using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy techniques, whereas metal removal properties of soil were characterized by analyzing removal capacity and sorption kinetics of potential metal-removing soils. The chemical characteristics revealed that all soils are prevalently constituted of silicon dioxide (21.83–78.58 %), aluminum oxide (4.13–38 %) and ferrous oxide (0.835–7.7 %), whereas calcium oxide showed the highest percentage (65.36 %) followed by silicon dioxide (21.83 %) in tuff soil. The results demonstrated that arsenic removal efficiency was higher in elevated aluminum oxide-containing akadama (0.00452 mg/L/g/h) and kanuma (0.00225 mg/L/g/h) soils, whereas cadmium (0.00634 mg/L/g/h) and lead (0.00693 mg/L/g/h) removal efficiencies were maximum in elevated calcium oxide-containing tuff soil. Physico-chemical sorption and ion exchange processes are the metal removal mechanisms. The critical appraisal of three metal removal data also clearly revealed cadmium > lead > arsenic order of removal efficiency in different soils, except in tuff and akadama soils followed by lead > cadmium > arsenic. It clearly signified that each type of soil had a specific metal adsorption affinity which was regulated by the specific chemical composition. It may be concluded that akadama would be potential arsenic-removing and tuff would be efficient cadmium and lead-removing soil sorbents.  相似文献

Nonlinear kinetic analysis of phenol adsorption onto peat soil   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Phenolic compounds are considered as a serious organic pollutant containing in many industrial effluents particularly vulnerable when the plant discharge is disposed on land. In the present study, the phenol removal potential of peat soil as adsorption media was investigated as the adsorption process are gaining popular for polishing treatment of toxic materials in industrial wastewater. Batch experiments were performed in the laboratory to determine the adsorption isotherms of initial concentrations for 5, 8, 10, 15, and 20 mg/L and predetermined quantity of peat soil with size ranges between 425 and 200 μm poured into different containers. The effects of various parameters like initial phenol concentration, adsorbent quantity, pH, and contact time were also investigated. From experimental results, it was found that 42 % of phenol removal took place with optimized initial phenol concentration of 10 mg/L, adsorbent dose of 200 g/L, solution pH 6.0 for the equilibrium contact time of 6 h. The result exhibits that pseudo-first-order (R 2 = 0.99) and Langmuir isotherm models are fitted reasonably (R 2 = 0.91). Adams–Bohart, Thomas, Yoon–Nelson, and Wolborska models were also investigated to the column experimental data of different bed heights to predict the breakthrough curves and to determine the kinetic coefficient of the models using nonlinear regression analysis. It was found that the Thomas model is the best fitted model to predict the experimental breakthrough curves with the highest coefficient of determination, R 2 = 0.99 and lowest root mean square error and mean absolute performance error values.  相似文献
