The Silurian of Gotland, Sweden, consists of 440 m of carbonate deposits. Repeatedly, uniform sequences of micritic limestones and marls are interrupted by complex-structured reefs and by adjacent platform sediments. Generally, the alteration of facies is interpreted as the result of sea-level fluctuations caused by a gradual regression with superimposed minor transgressive pulses. The purpose of this study is a facies interpretation based on both field observations and stable isotope measurements of brachiopod shells. Approximately 700 samples from stratigraphically arranged localities in different facies areas have been investigated. The carbon and oxygen isotopes show principally parallel curves and a close relationship to the stratigraphic sequence. Lower values occur in periods dominated by deposition of marly sequences. Higher values are observed in periods dominated by reefs and extended carbonate platforms. The oxygen isotope ratios are interpreted to reflect paleosalinity changes due to varying freshwater input, rather than to paleotemperature. Carbon isotope ratios are believed to have been connected to global changes in the burial of organic carbon in black shales during periods of euxinic deep water conditions. Consequently, the facies succession on Gotland results from global paleoclimatic conditions. Changes in terrigenous input due to different rates of weathering and freshwater runoff, rather than sea-level fluctuations, control the carbonate formation of the Silurian on Gotland.  相似文献

Previous studies in Silurian carbonates from Gotland (Sweden) have led to a model for the development of limestone-marl alternations. This model postulates that early diagenesis of precursor sediments without strong primary differences can result in a differentiation by selective dissolution of aragonite in marl beds and reprecipitation of calcite cement in limestone beds. This model is described as a set of mathematical equations that quantify the diagenetic processes (aragonite dissolution and calcite reprecipitation) that occur during the formation of limestone-marl interbeds from a hypothetical homogeneous precursor sediment. The calculations demonstrate that resulting hypothetical limestone-marl alternations show characteristic mathematical relationships between the ratios of the bed thicknesses of limestones and marls on one side, and the carbonate contents, on the other. By reversing this model, the original mineralogical composition of the precursor sediment of real-world rhythmic successions can be determined. In this study, alternations from the Silurian of Gotland, the Cambrian, Devonian, and Mississippian of North America, the Jurassic of France and Germany, and the Cretaceous of France are shown to exhibit mathematical relationships similar to those calculated for hypothetical precursor sediments without primary differences. Therefore, the mineralogical composition of their precursor sediments can be estimated. In contrast, the clear mismatch shown by the Lower Jurassic Belemnite Marls from Dorset indicates that these rhythms did not suffer an early diagenetic overprint. Our model helps to differentiate between rhythmites with strong depositional variations and those without; however, it cannot indicate whether a given alternation is the product of rhythmic diagenesis of a homogeneous precursor sediment or the result of diagenetic enhancement of subtle underlying sedimentary rhythms. For horizontally correlated patterns, such as laterally extensive beds and layers of nodules, an a priori unknown external signal has to be assumed.  相似文献

The manganese carbonate deposits of the anoxic Littorina sediments of the Gotland Deep have been commonly related to the periodic renewal of deep water by inflowing saline water from the North Sea. The use of scanning electron microscopy-based techniques allows identification of small-scale sedimentary and geochemical features associated with Mn-carbonate laminae, which has significant implications for models of Mn-carbonate formation. Varves occurring in the Littorina sequence contain up to four laminae that may be placed in a seasonal cycle, and kutnahorite laminae occur within varves only as a winter-early spring deposit. This kutnahorite laminae seasonality is in agreement with the seasonal distribution of major Baltic inflow events recorded in historical records, and a direct causal link between inflows and kutnahorite deposition is implied. Benthic foraminifera tests are found to be heavily encrusted in kutnahorite, implying that benthic recolonization during oxidation events occurs concurrently with kutnahorite formation. The relatively common occurrence of small (50 to 100 μm) hexagonal γ-Mn-sulfide pseudomorphs, associated with 13% of kutnahorite laminae studied, is reported in Gotland Deep sediments for the first time. Although Mn-sulfide crystals are not usually preserved in the sediment, the discovery of Mn-sulfide pseudomorphs suggests that initial formation of Mn-sulfide in the Gotland Deep may occur much more commonly during the process of kutnahorite formation than previous reports of Mn-sulfide occurrence have implied.  相似文献

塔里木盆地阿克苏市柯坪露头区下志留统地层出露连续、完整,是较好的海相碎屑岩沉积露头研究区,其沉积体系类型有待进一步探讨。笔者通过多次精细的露头沉积学观察及室内研究,对柯坪露头区下志留统海相碎屑岩沉积体系类型及其特征进行了分析研究。识别出三角洲及碎屑海岸沉积(潮坪),并在该区提出了河流作用为主的三角洲和潮汐影响三角洲两种三角洲类型。柯坪塔格组主要为河流作用为主的三角洲沉积,而塔塔埃尔塔格组则主要发育潮汐影响三角洲及潮坪沉积。探讨和对比了各类型沉积体系的沉积特征及其之间的差异性。  相似文献

The middle Silurian ‘big crisis’ refers to a graptolite extinction event and faunal turnover at the onset of a double‐peaked positive carbon isotope excursion. The crisis has been proposed to affect conodonts, giving rise to a sophisticated palaeoecological model of their stepwise extinction, known as the Mulde Event. However, the impact of the event on conodont faunas outside Gotland and the Silurian Baltic Basin remains unknown. Here, it is examined in the Widowo IG‐1 core (E Poland). The middle Silurian succession in this core represents foreshoal, shoal, and lagoonal settings on a tropical carbonate ramp on the shelf of the Eastern European Craton. Three positive δ13Ccarb excursions have been identified; the two upper excursions correlate with the Mulde isotope anomaly and with two global eustatic regressions. Conodont species proposed to be affected by the extinction event either were not observed or ranged through the extinction interval. Changes in their frequencies are best explained by the sequence stratigraphic architecture of the late Wenlock strata in the Widowo IG‐1 core. The little impact of the ‘big crisis’ may reflect facies homogeneity across the studied interval, supporting the hypothesis that the late Wenlock conodont turnover in epicontinental settings was primarily driven by eustatically controlled facies shifts. A detailed palaeomagnetic investigation of early Silurian volcanics of the Lawrenceton Formation in the Central Mobile Belt (CMB) of Newfoundland reveals primary remanence that places the sampled part of the CMB on the margin of Laurentia in low southerly latitudes in the early Silurian. The palaeomagnetic data indicate large vertical axis (net clockwise) rotations within the CMB and between the CMB and cratonic Laurentia. The volcanics were folded, faulted and in places cleaved in Silurian to Early Devonian times. Anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility measurements on lava flow samples verify field observations of a primary flow-parallel foliation and confirm field measurements of the palaeo-horizontal. A well-developed tectonic fabric was detected at one sampling site near the Reach Fault.Silurian redbeds of the Big Indian Pond Formation were also sampled for palaeomagnetic study. The sediments are folded, faulted and cleaved. A statistically sound syn-folding remanence was identified which, in a tectonically corrected state, is consistent in direction with the remanence in the Silurian volcanics. The sampled sediments are more intensely deformed than the volcanics and magnetic anisotropy measurements indicate both primary layering- and secondary cleavage-related fabrics in varying degrees from site to site. It is possible that cleavage development resulted in remanence reorientation leading to the illusion of syn-folding remanence when, in fact, the remanence was acquired prior to folding.Previously published palaeomagnetic investigations of Silurian rocks in the CMB revealed a discrepancy in palaeofield inclination between volcanic and sedimentary rock types. The sedimentary rocks yielded shallow inclinations and the volcanics intermediate inclinations. Inclination shallowing in the sediments was put forward as an explanation, as well as contamination of the sedimentary results with a shallow overprint. Others argued that the results from the volcanics were in error. The present investigation demonstrates that key volcanics carry a shallower remanence than previously thought, bringing them into approximate agreement with the majority of the results from sediments. Steep results from the Springdale volcanics and very shallow results from the King George IV lake sediments are at variance with the rest of the data. The Springdale result has large error limits that overlap with the other data. The anomalous King George IV result remains an outlier.  相似文献

中国南方志留系是加里东运动末期沉积的一套以碎屑岩为主的地层,同时其底部广泛发育一套优质烃源岩,对该套地层沉积古环境和古构造背景的恢复有重要的地质意义。通过对中国南方湘西和黔北典型剖面系统的地球化学分析表明该区志留系泥岩的稀土总量较高,w(ΣLREE)/w(ΣHREE)及w(La)N/w(Yb)N等比值显示轻、重稀土分异明显,REE分布模式为明显的轻稀土元素富集、重稀土元素呈平坦状及显著的负Eu异常。以Ceanom值反映水体介质的氧化还原性,志留纪早期的海水还原性较强,更有利于有机质的保存并形成优质的烃源岩。将REE的分异程度作为一种指示剂来表征沉积物沉积速率,志留系剖面自下向上,w(La)n/w(Yb)n值有逐步降低的趋势,表明研究区志留系下部的沉积速率普遍比上部低,更有利于有机质聚集和保存。根据稀土元素组合及其比值特征,结合古地理研究成果,认为研究区的物源来自雪峰古隆起和黔中古隆起,源岩为花岗岩和沉积岩的混合。  相似文献

The metamorphic allochthon of the central Norwegian Caledonides comprises a complex of discrete nappes of metasediments and igneous rocks ranging in age from probable Svecofennian through Vendian to Silurian. This southeastward-translated allochthon overlies a thin cover of autochthonous Vendian to Cambrian sediments deposited upon a crystalline Precambrian basement, and is superseded by late-orogenic, intermontanebasinal sediments of latest Silurian to Middle Devonian age. Stratigraphical sequences in higher allochthonous units are floored by oceanic tholeiitic basalts with rare, subjacent sheeted-dyke and gabbro units, considered as fragments of an ophiolite assemblage which suffered initial eastward transport in pre-Middle Arenig times, an important orogenic event which is well represented in northern and southwestern Norway. The overlying Ordovician—Silurian sequences, disturbed by episodic parorogenic events, embrace a variety of sedimentary facies from shallow-water carbonates to deep-marine terrigenous turbidites and include both island arc and marginal basin lavas and intrusives. Polyphase Middle Silurian metamorphism and deformation resulted in a complex telescoping and dissection of the Lower Palaeozoic rocks and their Precambrian substrate, with nappe translation in the order of several hundred kilometres. Folding and thrusting of Old Red Sandstone molasse sediments attests to continuing tectonism well into Devonian times.  相似文献

Irregular, scalloped erosion surfaces in the shelf carbonate sequences of the lower Eke Formation (Ludlow Series, upper Silurian) in the east of Gotland, Sweden, comprise series of shallow hollows separated by sharp-crested ridges, and cavities with sculptured, undercut walls, cut into lithified sediment. These represent analogues of the solution basins formed in modern coastal and subaerial karst terrains. Discrete erosional cavities merge on enlargement by breaching of the intervening walls to leave remnant, tapering ridges. Sets of the ridges and basins seen in surface view show an average width of basins of 1–2 m, with relief of 40–50 cm and pronounced N-S axes for the ridges; this alignment may reflect the local drainage direction. The lowermost erosion surface passes laterally into a planar, mineralized horizon at the top of the underlying Hemse Group that was resistant to and forms the base level of erosion. Because of restricted exposure of higher Eke Formation sediments the upper limit of erosion remains unknown. There is no evidence of caliche or subaerial diagenetic textures, but solution vugs are common in the eroded limestones. Marine hard-bottom biota attached to some surfaces, and transition from scalloped to planar surfaces indicate erosion in tidal zones, but subaerial karstic erosion is also inferred. The resubmerged karst-eroded topography is overlain by shallow marine carbonates, including small organic buildups. Finely-layered stromatolitic mats developed over the initial infill, in subtidal environments, and grew to form domed mounds within the erosional cavities. They abut sharply against bounding side walls and overhangs. Some emergence is evident from desiccation features in the upper parts of mounds. Biostratigraphical evidence dating the events from initial uplift and karstic erosion to covering of the drowned relief topography places the whole sequence within upper Ludlow times.  相似文献

Rocks in the Brungle‐Darbalara area of the Tumut Trough form two distinct domains: basement (mainly Bullawyarra Schist), of Cambrian‐Ordovician age, and an Ordovician ‐ Early Silurian sedimentary and volcanic cover sequence. These two domains are separated by a sharp discontinuity that marks an abrupt change in rock type, structure, metamorphic grade and deformation style. Cover sequences have undergone only one major penetrative deformation during the Late Silurian, involving sub‐greenschist facies metamorphism and upright folding. In contrast, the basement also underwent at least two older deformations at greenschist facies and contains distinct high‐strain zones subconcordant with the basement‐cover contact. The high‐strain zones, characterized by a ubiquitous south‐southeast trending mineral lineation, record a discontinuous history of ductile followed by brittle behaviour, consistent with an extensional origin.

The structural and metamorphic discontinuity separating basement from Silurian cover is characterized by widespread cataclasis and alteration and is interpreted as a major detachment fault associated with lithospheric extension and the development of the Tumut Trough in the Early Silurian. During the main period of movement on the detachment, which took place prior to intrusion of the Blacks Flat Diorite into the Bullawyarra Schist, mafic and serpentinized ultramafic rocks either were tectonically emplaced or intruded into the high strain zones. This preceded and accompanied extensional faulting of the cover and deposition of Silurian trough sediments and volcanics which unconformably overlie and onlap older units.

The development of the Tumut Trough, in the Brungle‐Darbalara area, bears many similarities with that of Cordilleran metamorphic core complexes. Such a model is consistent with environments suggested for the trough by previous workers. The south‐southeast extension direction parallels the trough‐bounding faults and implies an overall strike‐slip tectonic setting.  相似文献

Geological and seismic profiling data (more than 25000 km of seismic profiles and about 1000 sediment sampling stations) collected during the last 30 yr by research vessels of the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, Russian Academy of Sciences are summarized. Seismic records are directly correlated with sediment cores. The distribution map (scale 1 : 500000) of Quaternary lithofacial complexes corresponding to certain stages of the Baltic Sea evolution is compiled. The following four complexes are distinguished (from the base to the top): (I) moraine, with maximum thicknesses 60 and 170 m in valleys and ridges respectively: (II) varved clay of periglacial basins and from the Baltic Ice Lake (BIL), up to 25 m thick in depressions; (III) lacustrinemarine homogeneous clay with a thickness up to 4–8 m in depressions; (IV) marine sediments (mud, aleurite, coarse-grained deposits) accumulated in environments with intense bottom currents activity (thickness 2–4 m in the Gotland Basin, 4–6 m in the Gdansk Basin, and 10–20 m in fans and prodeltas). The Quaternary sequence is cut through by inherited valleys, where the thickest Holocene sediments are noted. Today, these valleys serve as routes of sediment transport to slope bases and central parts of basins. Outblows of deep gas (through faults and fractures) and diagenetic gas (from sediments) to the bottom surface also occur in the valleys. Sedimentation rates are higher in the Gdansk Basin (up to 100–120 cm/ka). Thick sand, aleurite, and mud bodies are accumulated here (about 15–20 m in the Visla River prodelta). The sedimentation rate is slower in the Gotland Basin (up to 50–60 cm/ka), where thin (2–4 m) sections of more fine-grained mud occur  相似文献

Sequence stratigraphy division and comparison of the Silurian in Tarim Basin were a hot research field in oil industry and academia. However, basic geological problems limited the exploration needed for further research. In this paper, 21 lithofacies and 5 facies associations were identified based on the grain size of sediments, sedimentary characteristics, and bioturbation conditions: (1) fluvial-dominate delta front facies association; (2) tidal flat facies association; (3) tidal channel facies association; (4) offshore-transition facies association; (5) shoreface facies association. The seismic, outcrops, and logging data were involved to divide the Silurian (including upper Ordovician Tierekeawati Fm.) at Tabei uplift into five sedimentary sequences. SQ1 (Tierekeawati Fm.) is mainly characterized by tidal flat facies association, while delta front facies association locally develops; SQ2 (the lower Kepingtage Fm.) generally consists of offshore-transition facies association; SQ3 (the upper Kepingtage Fm.) is mainly characterized by shoreface and delta front facies association. For SQ4 (Tataaiertage Fm.), the transgressive system tract (TST) is dominated by shoreface facies association, while the fluvial-dominate delta facies association widely develops in highstand system tract (HST). SQ5 (Yimugantawu Fm.) is mainly characterized by tidal flat facies association. From SQ1 to SQ2, an overall sea level transgressive process is shown, while an overall sea level regressive process is found from SQ2 to SQ5. The results are consistent with the progradation and regression trends of large regions reflected by sequence framework pattern. As to SQ3 sequence, TST and HST sandstones are the main reservoir intervals in the Silurian. Hercynian movement led to the strong uplift and extensive erosion in the Silurian at Tabei and Tazhong uplift, and is favorable to the formation of strata erosion unconformable traps.  相似文献

A laterally extensive and conspicuously smooth erosional surface is exposed near the Wenlock–Ludlow boundary on east-central Gotland, Sweden. It occurs in the reef complex area of a carbonate platform, has an undulating topography, and separates truncated bioherms and biostromes from overlying allochthonous high energy deposits. On a basin regional scale, the surface is associated to a shift from a prograding to a retrograding platform, and to a substantial hiatus in basin marginal areas (Estonia). The significance of the surface is further indicated by: (a) clear-cut truncation of the reef complex, including m-sized stromatoporoids, along a distance of at least 20 km, (b) an erosional relief exceeding 2.08 m, (c) a conspicuously smooth nature in both palaeolows and palaeohighs, (d) present, although scarce, subaerial diagenetic indications, e.g. shallow karst features at the unconformity surface and pendant/meniscus cement in the lowermost part of overlying strata, (e) a locally occurring basal conglomeratic lag in overlying strata, and (f) peritidal indications and, as evident from at least one quarry, onlapping geometry in overlying strata.

The unconformity has implications for the analysis of the middle Silurian Baltic basin evolution as well as for the interpretation of erosional surfaces on carbonate platforms in general. Based on the above characteristics, the formation of the unconformity is attributed to a relative sea-level fall, causing subaerial exposure, followed by transgressive abrasion in a rocky shore environment. The unconformity hence constitutes a ravinement surface which, based on the associated basin regional sedimentary changes, is interpreted as coinciding with a regional exposure surface (sequence boundary). It thus increases our understanding of the hitherto poorly understood palaeogeographic evolution of the middle Silurian Baltic basin. Further, the transgressive erosion was significant as well as recurrent, as indicated by the clear-cut truncation of large stromatoporoids at the unconformity surface and by truncated marine fossil fragments in upper edges of karst infills. The unconformity therefore constitutes a good example of the capability of transgressive erosion in creating stratigraphic incompleteness, and hence in removing subaerial indications, on previously exposed carbonate platforms.  相似文献

Comparison of ultrastructures in Pliocene periplatform carbonates from the Bahamas with Silurian limestones from Gotland (Sweden) reveals that despite the differences in primary sediment composition and age, they reflect a similar mechanism of lithification. In both sequences calcite microspar was formed as a primary cement at an early stage of marine burial diagenesis. Neither significant compression nor meteoric influence are necessary for the formation of calcite microspar. A model is proposed for the process of microsparitic cementation of fine-grained aragonite needle muds comprising four stages: (1) unconsolidated, aragonite-dominated carbonate mud; (2) precipitation of microspar that engulfs aragonite needles; (3) dissolution of aragonite, resulting in pitted surfaces of the microspar crystals; and (4) slight recrystallization. Our results contradict the widespread opinion that microspar necessarily is a product of secondary recrystallization of a previously lithified micrite.  相似文献

The Upper Silurian Keyser Limestone is a relatively thin (< 85 m) unit of lagoonal, barrier, and shallow offshore sediments that crops out in the central Appalachians. Lithologies include massive micritic limestones to calcarenites, calcisiltites, and calcareous quartz arenites. The barrier lithofacies is preserved predominantly as tidal inlet channel-fill. Its presence is supported by two lines of evidence: (1) the sequence of sedimentary textures and structures resembles that observed in modern inlets, and (2) the sequence occupies a position immediately above a disconformity, and is accompanied by an abrupt vertical change in faunal diversity, which is interpreted as representing the transgression of open marine over back-barrier environments The inlet channel sequence comprises fine- to medium-grained, well-sorted quartz arenites that disconformably overlie sediments deposited on carbonate tidal flats (laminated, mudcracked pelmicrites). The sandstone displays a fining-upward texture, and contains a broken and abraded mixed fauna. Cross-bedding is bipolar, with major modes oriented obliquely to depositional strike. Decimetre-scale sets of planar and trough cross-beds grade upward to centimetre-scale sets of ripple cross-lamination, washed-out ripples, and plane beds. This sequence represents the change from deep to shallow channel environments, and is attributed to lateral inlet migration. The inlet sequence was preferentially preserved during marine transgression because of its relative thickness and lower stratigraphic position with respect to overlying and adjacent barrier-beach sediments. The vertical relationships of this inlet-lagoon complex emphasize that care must be taken in interpreting shallow-water transgressive sequences. Vertical ‘jumps’ in faunal diversity accompanied by scour surfaces could be misconstrued as major unconformities. Instead, such sequences may represent the shoreface erosion normally associated with the transgressive migration of barrier islands. Whether or not the faunal jump is accompanied by a barrier lithosome is greatly dependent on the geometry, frequency, and migration rate of tidal inlets.  相似文献

An unusual type of metasomatic dolomitization occurs in the region. Here numerous zones of dolomitization are developed in Ordovician and Silurian sediments, confined to tectonic disturbances and zones of jointing with northeasterly strike. The zones of dolomitization have been traced along fractures and are up to 10-12 km long and up to 400 wide. The dolomitization has a regional character and is apparently associated with the effects of rising magnesian waters on the Ordovician and Silurian carbonate sequence. Possible formation of the zones of dolomitization embraces the interval from the Late Silurian to the Middle Devonian, that is, these zones are of Caledonian age.—Authors.  相似文献

The Xing‐Meng Orogenic Belt is the eastern extension of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt that marks the boundary between the North China Block and the Siberian Block. Studies of zircon U Pb ages and Hf isotopic compositions show that four clastic sedimentary rock samples from different parts of the regional stratigraphic sequence were deposited at different ages, none earlier than Mid‐ or Early Silurian. Two sedimentary rocks were deposited during or after the Early Permian. Almost all zircons are of igneous origin. In Silurian and Devonian sediments, zircons show several modal age peaks, and in Permian sediments, zircons show a unimodal age peak. Based on the zircon age distribution of sedimentary rocks versus known ages from exposed rocks of the potential source regions, most of the zircons were derived from the Xing‐Meng Orogen itself. A few came from the South Mongolian microcontinent or the Siberia Block, but none came from the North China Block. The zircons of a biotite‐plagioclase paragneiss in Xilinhot have similar provenance to the sediments and were deposited during or after the Middle Devonian. Similarities between zircon age spectra and events in underlying rocks of sedimentary origin show that the sediments lie at their deposition site north of the Solonker suture zone because north‐dipping subduction and elevation blocked deposition of material from farther afield. Hf isotope compositions show the crustal accretion stages of the provenance areas during the Meso‐ to Neoarchaean, Palaeoproterozoic and Early and Late Palaeozoic. 沉积物中重矿物分布受物源区、构造抬升与剥蚀作用、古地貌以及沉积古气候、古环境等多种因素影响,因此沉积重砂矿物的研究可应用于物源区、沉积环境的分析,阐明构造旋回与沉积作用的响应关系。本文通过对塔中地区中1井等6口探井上泥盆统东河砂岩和志留系柯坪塔格组砂岩中重砂矿物分析,提出了塔中东河砂岩重砂矿物主要来自稳定的基底再沉积及花岗岩来源,但受近源的基性火山岩及岩浆期后热液作用影响较大;志留系下砂岩重砂矿物主要来自下覆碳酸盐岩、花岗岩和搬运再沉积物,总体形成于稳定的、多物源的构造-沉积环境,物源方向可能是东南至西北方向。  相似文献
