The galaxy population in rich local galaxy clusters shows a ratio of one quarter elliptical galaxies, two quarters S0 galaxies, and one quarter spiral galaxies. Observations of clusters at redshift 0.5 show a perspicuously different ratio, the dominant galaxy type are spiral galaxies with a fraction of two quarters while the number of S0 galaxies decreases to a fraction of one quarter (Dressler et al. 1997). This shows an evolution of the galaxy population in clusters since redshift 0.5 and it has been suspected that galaxy transformation processes during the infall into a cluster are responsible for this change. These could be merging, starburst or ram-pressure stripping. We use our evolutionary synthesis models to describe various possible effects of those interactions on the star formation of spiral galaxies infalling into clusters. We study the effects of starbursts of various strengths as well as of the truncation of star formation at various epochs on the color and luminosity evolution of model galaxies of various spectral types. As a first application we present the comparison of our models with observed properties of the local S0 galaxy population to constrain possible S0 formation mechanisms in clusters. We study the tidal effects of close collisions between two spherical galaxies of various mass and mass distributions by numerical simulations. The galaxies are represented by polytropes of indices n=4 and n=0 which denote cases of highcentral concentration and uniform mass distribution respectively.The initial relative velocity of the galaxies is chosen to be 700 km s-1.The results indicate that the tidal effects are quite sensitive to both mass and mass distribution of the galaxies. The dependence oftidal capture and tidal disruption on the choice of the model and mass ratio is investigated. The classification of collisionis given for each simulation. The results also indicate that in a collision between two identical galaxies relatively more spin is imparted to the galaxies ifthey are centrally concentrated than if they are homogeneous.  相似文献

We present an investigation of satellite galaxies in the outskirts of galaxy clusters taken from a series of high-resolution N -body simulations. We focus on the so-called backsplash population, i.e. satellite galaxies that once were inside the virial radius of the host but now reside beyond it. We find that this population is significant in number and needs to be appreciated when interpreting the various galaxy morphology environmental relationships and decoupling the degeneracy between nature and nurture. Specifically, we find that approximately half of the galaxies with current cluster-centric distance in the interval 1–2 virial radii of the host are backsplash galaxies that once penetrated deep into the cluster potential, with 90 per cent of these entering to within 50 per cent of the virial radius. These galaxies have undergone significant tidal disruption, losing on average 40 per cent of their mass. This results in a mass function for the backsplash population different from those galaxies infalling for the first time. We further show that these two populations are kinematically distinct and should be observable within existent spectroscopic surveys.  相似文献

The problems of using the spectral index of radio galaxies in various tests, in particular, in selecting distant radio sources are considered. The history of the question of choosing a criterion of searching for distant radio galaxies based on the spectral index is presented. For a new catalog of 2442 radio galaxies constructed from NED, SDSS, and CATS data, an analytical form of the spectral index-redshift relation has been determined for the first time. The spectral index-angular size and spectral index-flux density diagrams have also been constructed. Peculiarities of the distribution of sources on these diagrams are discussed.  相似文献

An update of the set of low surface brightness galaxies is presented which can be used to set constraints on the otherwise ambiguous decompositions of their rotation curves into contributions due to the various components of the galaxies. The selected galaxies show all clear spiral structure and arguments of density wave theory of galactic spiral arms are used to estimate the masses of the galactic disks. Again these estimates seem to indicate that the disks of low surface brightness galaxies might be much more massive than currently thought. This puzzling result contradicts stellar population synthesis models. This would mean also that low surface brightness galaxies are not dominated by dark matter in their inner parts. Computer models of galaxy fields are generated using the Monte-Carlo simulation technique described in Paper I (MacGillivrayet al., 1982b). In the models, various scenarios for the true 3-dimensional distribution of galaxies (e.g., clustering on continuous or hierarchical scales) are incorporated and the galaxies projected onto a synthetic photographic plate. All factors affecting the light from distant galaxies are taken into account in the simulations and also factors affecting the detection and measurement of faint galaxy images on photographic plates scanned with an automatic plate-measuring machine. The model fields are compared, both qualitatively and statistically, with a field obtained from measures with COSMOS on a deep photograph taken with the UK Schmidt Telescope. The results indicate that the observed distribution of faint galaxies on photographic plates can only be represented by a model involving second order clustering of galaxies. However, the exact nature of this second-order clustering cannot be unambiguously ascertained from the 2-D distributions, both a uniformly-populated supercluster model and the cellular model being able to represent statistically the observed projected distribution of galaxies.  相似文献

Black hole mass determination in active galaxies is a key issue in understanding various luminosity states. In the present paper, we try to generalize the mass determination method based on the X-ray excess variance, successfully used for typical broad line Seyfert 1 galaxies (BLS1) to narrow line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies. NLS1 galaxies differ from BLS1 with respect to several properties. They are generally more variable in 2–10 keV energy band so the natural expectation is the need to use a different scaling coefficient between the mass and the variance in these two types of sources. However, we find that such a simple approach is not enough. Although for majority of the 21 NLS1 galaxies in our sample a single scaling coefficient (larger by a factor 20) provided us with a satisfactory method of mass determination, in a small subset of NLS1 galaxies this approach failed. Variability of those objects appeared to be at the intermediate level between NLS1 and BLS1 galaxies. These exceptional NLS1 galaxies have much harder soft X-ray spectra than majority of NLS1 galaxies. We thus postulate that the division of Seyfert 1 galaxies into BLS1 and NLS1 according to the widths of the  Hβ  line is less generic than according to the soft X-ray slope.  相似文献

We have observed 28 local galaxies in the wavelength range between 1 and 2.4 μm in order to define template spectra of the normal galaxies along the Hubble sequence. Five galaxies per morphological type were observed in most cases, and the resulting rms spread of the normalized spectra of each class, including both intrinsic differences and observational uncertainties, is about 1 per cent in K , 2 per cent in H and 3 per cent in J . Many absorption features can be accurately measured. The target galaxies and the spectroscopic aperture (7×53 arcsec2) were chosen to be similar to those used by Kinney et al. to define template UV and optical spectra. The two data sets are matched in order to build representative spectra between 0.1 and 2.4 μm. The continuum shape of the optical spectra and the relative normalization of the near-IR ones were set to fit the average effective colours of the galaxies of the various Hubble classes. The resulting spectra are used to compute the k -corrections of the normal galaxies in the near-IR bands, and to check the predictions of various spectral synthesis models: while the shape of the continuum is generally well predicted, large discrepancies are found in the absorption lines. Among the other possible applications, here we also show how these spectra can be used to place constraints on the dominant stellar population in local galaxies. The hierarchical and dynamical structure of three clusters of galaxies, A 2634, A 1983, and DC 0428-53, is investigated. Based on their example, we can say that the central cD galaxies play the leading role in clusters, affecting the course of their evolution. Radio and x-ray galaxies are not always part of the substructure. The morphological composition of various hierarchical subgroups depends on the stage of evolution. Clusters have a tendency to be oriented in the direction toward the nearest neighbor.  相似文献

A substantial body of evidence now exists that indicates that there is a connection between the observed activity in galaxies and the apparent involvement of these active galaxies in tidal interactions with other galaxies. To investigate this phenomenon, we are studying the morphologies and environments of various interacting galaxies showing evidence of activity. In particular, we present here some preliminary results from our investigations of the claimed interaction-activity connection for a sample of colliding radio galaxies endowed with a bent radio jet morphology. We find that the timing of the jet activity is consistent with a tidal-triggering hypothesis. Our results therefore lend further support to the idea that the galactic activity observed in some interactive galaxies is in fact collision-induced.  相似文献

Three distinct and representative sources of quasar data are used in this paper: 1) the Revised Optical Catalog of QSOs, 2) the quasars in the ?40° CTIO Curtis Schmidt Survey, and 3) the quasars in the Virgo Cluster region. Their redshift and magnitude distributions on various scales and their possible association with galaxies are analysed statistically.The preliminary conclusions are as follows. 1) The redshift and magnitude distributions on various scales are non-uniform. 2) The non-uniformity appears to be greater in the two local samples. 3) There is no evidence of a general association of quasars with field galaxies. 4) A general association of quasars with brighter cluster galaxies is statistically significant. 5) It seems likely that not all quasars have the same origin, some being local, some cosmological.  相似文献

We analyze a sample of the Local Volume that contains 451 galaxies within 10 Mpc. We compare the various global parameters of these galaxies with their tidal index that characterizes the local density of the environment. The closest correlation is observed between the density of the galaxy’s environment and its morphological type. The abundance of neutral hydrogen in the members of close groups was found to be, on average, a factor of 3 lower than that in isolated galaxies. However, much of this difference is attributable to different morphological composition for the group members and field galaxies. The total mass-to-luminosity ratio is virtually independent of the tidal index of the galaxy, which indirectly indicates a low percentage of tidal systems among dwarf galaxies. All of the galaxies with three or more companions in the Local Volume are shown to have masses above the threshold value of 1010M.  相似文献

We follow the evolution of the galaxy population in a ΛCDM cosmology by means of high-resolution N -body simulations in which the formation of galaxies and their observable properties are calculated using a semi-analytic model. We display images of the spatial distribution of galaxies in the simulations that illustrate its evolution and provide a qualitative understanding of the processes responsible for the various biases that develop. We consider three specific statistical measures of clustering at     and     : the correlation length (in both real and redshift space) of galaxies of different luminosity, the morphology–density relation and the genus curve of the topology of galaxy isodensity surfaces. For galaxies with luminosity below L ∗, the     correlation length depends very little on the luminosity of the sample, but for brighter galaxies it increases very rapidly, reaching values in excess of 10  h −1 Mpc. The 'accelerated' dynamical evolution experienced by galaxies in rich clusters, which is partly responsible for this effect, also results in a strong morphology–density relation. Remarkably, this relation is already well-established at     . The genus curves of the galaxies are significantly different from the genus curves of the dark matter, however this is not a result of genuine topological differences but rather of the sparse sampling of the density field provided by galaxies. The predictions of our model at     will be tested by forthcoming data from the 2dF and Sloan galaxy surveys, and those at     by the DEEP and VIRMOS surveys.  相似文献

What are the origins of the soft X‐ray line emission from non‐AGN galaxies? XMM‐Newton RGS spectra of nearby non‐AGN galaxies (including starforming ones: M82, NGC 253, M51, M83, M61, NGC 4631, M94, NGC 2903, and the Antennae galaxies, as well as the inner bulge of M31) have been analyzed. In particular, the Kα triplet of O VII shows that the resonance line is typically weaker than the forbidden and/or inter‐combination lines. This suggests that a substantial fraction of the emission may not arise directly from optically thin thermal plasma, as commonly assumed, and may instead originate at its interface with neutral gas via charge exchange. This latter origin naturally explains the observed spatial correlation of the emission with various tracers of cool gas in some of the galaxies. However, alternative scenarios, such as the resonance scattering by the plasma and the relic photo‐ionization by AGNs in the recent past, cannot be ruled out, at least in some cases, and are being examined. Such X‐ray spectroscopic studies are important to the understanding of the relationship of the emission to various high‐energy feedback processes in galaxies (© 2012 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We have discovered a population of extremely red galaxies at z  ≃ 1.5 which have apparent stellar ages of ≳ 3 Gyr, based on detailed spectroscopy in the rest-frame ultraviolet. In order for galaxies to have existed at the high collapse redshifts indicated by these ages, there must be a minimum level of power in the density fluctuation spectrum on galaxy scales. This paper compares the required power with that inferred from other high-redshift populations: damped Lyα absorbers and Lyman-limit galaxies at z  ≃ 3.2. If the collapse redshifts for the old red galaxies are in the range z c ≃ 6–8, there is general agreement between the various tracers on the required inhomogeneity on 1-Mpc scales. This level of small-scale power requires the Lyman-limit galaxies to be approximately ν ≃ 3.0 fluctuations, implying a very large bias parameter b  ≃ 6. If the collapse redshifts of the red galaxies are indeed in the range z c = 6–8 required for power spectrum consistency, their implied ages at z  ≃ 1.5 are between 3 and 3.8 Gyr for essentially any model universe of current age 14 Gyr. The age of these objects as deduced from gravitational collapse thus provides independent support for the ages estimated from their stellar populations. Such early-forming galaxies are rare, and their contribution to the cosmological stellar density is consistent with an extrapolation to higher redshifts of the star formation rate measured at z  < 5; there is no evidence for a general era of spheroid formation at extreme redshifts.  相似文献

We report the detection of seven candidate Lyα-emitting galaxies which have been found during the preliminary phase of the 'Calar Alto Deep Imaging Survey' (CADIS). They are selected from 147 emission-line galaxies detected in a field of 60 arcmin2 with a Fabry–Pérot interferometer, following the exclusion of 140 sources identified as foreground galaxies by a combination of broad- and narrow-band filters. Although no conclusive spectroscopic confirmation is yet available, we expect from an analysis of possible residual contamination by foreground objects that two or more of the candidates will turn out to be genuine Lyα-emitting primeval galaxies at a redshift of z =5.7. For a flat universe ( q 0=0.5) this would be in perfect agreement with refined predictions of the abundance of primeval galaxies and various recent results on the space density of young galaxies at z ≤4.5.  相似文献

In these first results from a photographic survey of nearby clusters and groups of galaxies, we compare the luminosity functions of galaxies of various Hubble types in the core of the Formax cluster to luminosity functions in the core of the Virgo cluster from Sandageet al. (1985). The galaxy classifications for the two clusters are based on identical plate material, and are hence directly comparable. The properties (galaxy density, velocity dispersion, X-ray luminosity) of the two clusters are quite different, yet we find few significant differences in the luminosity functions, or in the morphological mix of galaxies between the two clusters. In particular, while there is some indication that the ratios of giants to dwarfs and early to late-type galaxies in the two clusters differ, we cannot exclude the possibility that the ratios are identical. We discuss the selection limits of our survey and the completeness corrections that must be applied to the faint end of the luminosity function. The effective surface brightness of early-type galaxies in our sample decreases with decreasing luminosity. We show that this correlation is not an artifact of our selection criteria for dwarf spheroidal galaxies and use it to determine the relative distances to the Fornax and Virgo clusters. We also present evidence for a radial variation in the luminosity function of dwarf ellipticals within the two clusters in the sense that the faint end of the luminosity distribution is enhanced at the centre of each cluster.  相似文献
