The current rate of nucleosynthesis in the solar neighbourhood is re-evaluated on the basis of Arnett’s (1978) stellar yields, the mass loss models of Chiosi, Nasi and Sreenivasan (1978) and the initial mass function determined by Lequeux (1978). If massive stars are held responsible for most of the metals we observe, a higher birthrate of these stars in the past is indicated in view of the low current rate of nucleosynthesis. The intermediate mass stars may not supply the bulk of the metals unless total disruption of their carbon core takes place. While a declining birthrate is in conflict with the result obtained from the age-metallicity relation of stars, it is supported by some galactic evolution models which interpret successfully the white dwarf mass distribution data. If the constraint of a nearly time-invariant birthrate were strictly accepted, then models of the prompt initial enrichment type are required to explain the observed abundances in terms of nucleosynthesis in massive stars.  相似文献

Observations with a matrix photometer are reported. The stellar magnitudes in the BVRcIc bands are estimated for 80 comparison stars in the neighborhoods of 10 galaxies with active nuclei: 2 Seyfert galaxies, 4 quasars, and 4 BL Lac objects. The stellar magnitudes of the observed stars range from 11 to 19m.5. For stars with magnitudes of 14–15m the typical photometric errors are 0m.011, 0m.008, 0m.006, and 0m.007 in the B, V, R, and I bands, respectively. The BVRI magnitudes for most of these stars were not known previously. 14′ × 14′ finding charts for these stars are included. These results can be used for differential BVRI photometry of active galactic nuclei. __________ Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 50, No. 1, pp. 57–72 (February 2007).  相似文献

Compact remnants – stellar mass black holes and neutron stars formed in the inner few parsec of galactic centres are predicted to sink into the central parsec due to dynamical friction on low-mass stars, forming a high concentration cusp. Same physical region may also contain very high-density molecular clouds and accretion discs that are needed to fuel supermassive black hole (SMBH) activity. Here we estimate gas capture rates on to the cusp of stellar remnants, and the resulting X-ray luminosity, as a function of the accretion disc mass. At low disc masses, most compact objects are too dim to be observable, whereas in the high disc case most of them are accreting at their Eddington rates. We find that for low accretion disc masses, compact remnant cusps may be more luminous than the central SMBHs. This 'diffuse' emission may be of importance for local moderately bright active galactic nuclei (AGNs), especially low-luminosity AGNs. We also briefly discuss how this expected emission can be used to put constraints on the black hole cusp near our Galactic Centre.  相似文献

Active galactic nuclei can produce extremely powerful jets. While tightly collimated, the scale of these jets and the stellar density at galactic centres implies that there will be many jet/star interactions, which can mass load the jet through stellar winds. Previous work employed modest wind mass outflow rates, but this does not apply when mass loading is provided by a small number of high mass-loss stars. We construct a framework for jet mass loading by stellar winds for a broader spectrum of wind mass-loss rates than has previously been considered. Given the observed stellar mass distributions in galactic centres, we find that even highly efficient (0.1 Eddington luminosity) jets from supermassive black holes of masses M BH≲ 104 M are rapidly mass loaded and quenched by stellar winds. For  104 M < M BH < 108 M  , the quenching length of highly efficient jets is independent of the jet's mechanical luminosity. Stellar wind mass loading is unable to quench efficient jets from more massive engines, but can account for the observed truncation of the inefficient M87 jet, and implies a baryon-dominated composition on scales ≳2 kpc therein even if the jet is initially pair plasma dominated.  相似文献

We investigate the dependence of the carbon and oxygen production in stars on the 3α rate by varying the energy of the 0+ 2-state of 12C and determine the resulting yields for a selection of low-mass, intermediate-mass and massive stars. The yields are obtained using modern stellar evolution codes that follow the entire evolution of massive stars, including the supernova explosion, and consider in detail the 3rd dredge-up process during the thermally pulsating asymptotic giant branch of low-mass and intermediate-mass stars. Our results show that the C and O production in massive stars depends strongly on the initial mass, and that it is crucial to follow the entire evolution. A rather strong C production during the He-shell flashes compared to quiescent He burning leads to a lower sensitivity of the C and O production in low-mass and intermediate-mass stars on the 3α-rate than predicted in our previous work. In particular, the C production of intermediate-mass stars seems to have a maximum close to the actual value of the 0+ 2 energy level of 12C. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The characteristics of gravitational bursts from active galactic nuclei, and globular clusters are obtained for three astrophysical situations:(i) scattering of stars by massive black holes residued at the centers of galaxies and globular clusters; (ii) the close encounters of stars in the nuclear regions of these objects; (iii) scattering of stars by black holes of stellar mass containing in the stellar population of galactic nuclei and clusters. The most effective source of gravitational bursts appears to be a scattering of stars by the massive central black holes which produces the bursts with dimensionless amplitudeh10–19–10–21 and frequencies from 10–1 to 10–5 Hz. The characteristics obtained correspond to the possiblities of a future gravitational-wave experiment with use of laser Doppler tracking of interplanetary spacecrafts.  相似文献

The first generation of stars was formed from primordial gas. Numerical simulations suggest that the first stars were predominantly very massive, with typical masses M≥100M . These stars were responsible for the reionization of the universe, the initial enrichment of the intergalactic medium with heavy elements, and other cosmological consequences. In this work, we study the structure of Zero Age Main-Sequence stars for a wide mass and metallicity range and the evolution of 100, 150, 200, 250 and 300M galactic and pregalactic Pop III very massive stars without mass loss, with metallicity Z=10−6 and 10−9, respectively. Using a stellar evolution code, a system of 10 equations together with boundary conditions are solved simultaneously. For the change of chemical composition, which determines the evolution of a star, a diffusion treatment for convection and semiconvection is used. A set of 30 nuclear reactions are solved simultaneously with the stellar structure and evolution equations. Several results on the main sequence, and during the hydrogen and helium burning phases, are described. Low-metallicity massive stars are hotter and more compact and luminous than their metal-enriched counterparts. Due to their high temperatures, pregalactic stars activate sooner the triple alpha reaction self-producing their own heavy elements. Both galactic and pregalactic stars are radiation pressure dominated and evolve below the Eddington luminosity limit with short lifetimes. The physical characteristics of the first stars have significant influence in predictions of the ionizing photon yields from the first luminous objects; also they develop large convective cores with important helium core masses which are important for explosion calculations.  相似文献

The large amounts of dust detected in sub-millimeter galaxies and quasars at high redshift pose a challenge to galaxy formation models and theories of cosmic dust formation. At z>6 only stars of relatively high mass (>3 M) are sufficiently short-lived to be potential stellar sources of dust. This review is devoted to identifying and quantifying the most important stellar channels of rapid dust formation. We ascertain the dust production efficiency of stars in the mass range 3–40 M using both observed and theoretical dust yields of evolved massive stars and supernovae (SNe) and provide analytical expressions for the dust production efficiencies in various scenarios. We also address the strong sensitivity of the total dust productivity to the initial mass function. From simple considerations, we find that, in the early Universe, high-mass (>3 M) asymptotic giant branch stars can only be dominant dust producers if SNe generate ≲3×10−3 M of dust whereas SNe prevail if they are more efficient. We address the challenges in inferring dust masses and star-formation rates from observations of high-redshift galaxies. We conclude that significant SN dust production at high redshift is likely required to reproduce current dust mass estimates, possibly coupled with rapid dust grain growth in the interstellar medium.  相似文献

The Rayleigh-Taylor instability forms massive complexes. When 1021 atoms cm–2 are gathered, X-rays which heat the gas and UV-rays which ionize carbon are absorbed. A layer should appear with temperatures as low as 6 K and density to 4×103 cm–3. Finally the layer is fragmented into stars whose masses may even be less than one solar mass. The temperature of the layer should increase with time because part of free carbon is gradually absorbed by dust. Therefore more massive stars should appear after less massive stars. The stars which are formed kept near the layer by its gravitation. When their total mass becomes comparable with the mass of the layer, they should fall to the galactic plane in agreement with observed proper motions of several studied stellar systems.  相似文献

A catalog of massive (⩾10 M ) stars in binary and multiple systems with well-known masses and luminosities has been compiled. The catalog is analyzed using a theoretical mass-luminosity relation. This relation allows both normal main-sequence stars and stars with peculiarities: with clear manifestations of mass transfer, mass accretion, and axial rotation, to be identified. Least-squares fitting of the observational data in the range of stellar masses 10M M ≲ 50 M yields the relation LM 2.76. An erratum to this article is available at .  相似文献

It is essential for the understanding of stellar structure models of high mass stars to explain why constant stars, nonpulsating chemically peculiar hot Bp stars and pulsating stars co‐exist in the slowly pulsating B stars and β Cephei instability strips. We have conducted a search for magnetic fields in the four Bp stars HD55522, HD105382, HD131120, and HD138769 which previously have been wrongly identified as slowly pulsating B stars. A recent study of these stars using the Doppler Imaging technique revealed that the elements He and Si are inhomogeneously distributed on the stellar surface, causing the periodic variability. Using FORS 1 in spectropolarimetric mode at the VLT, we have acquired circular polarisation spectra to test the presence of a magnetic field in these stars. A variable magnetic field is clearly detected in HD55522 and HD105382, but no evidence for the existence of a magnetic field was found in HD131120. The presence of a magnetic field in HD138769 is suggested by one measurement at 3σ level. We discuss the occurrence of magnetic B stars among the confirmed pulsating B stars and find strong magnetic fields of order kG and oscillations to be mutually exclusive. The absolute magnitudeM v of the hydrogen deficient binary υ Sgr has been estimated as -4.8 ± 1.0 from the distribution of the interstellar reddening, polarization and interstellar lines of the surrounding stars. From the ANS observations obtained at the time of the secondary eclipse, it appears that the hotter secondary is surrounded by a disc with colours of a B8-B9 star. The λ 1550 CIv absorption line arising in the stellar wind does not show any change in strength during the secondary minimum. The upper limit to the mass-loss rate from the high temperature wind is estimated as ≤ 5 × 10-7 M⊙ yr-1 from the 2 cm and 6 cm radio observations. This paper presents a global analysis of the 2MASS (Two Micron All Sky Survey) data as observed in seven fields at different galactic latitudes in our Galaxy. The data allow the preliminary determination of the scale parameters, which lead to strong constraints on the radial and vertical structure of the galactic thin and thick disc. The interpretation of star counts and colour distributions of stars in the near-infrared with the synthetic stellar population model gives strong evidence that the galactic thin disc density scalelength ( h R ) is rather short (2.8±0.3 kpc). The galactic thick disc population is revisited in the light of new data. We find the thick disc to have a local density of 3.5±2.0 per cent of the thin disc, exponential scaleheight ( h z ) of 860±200 pc and exponential scalelength ( h R ) of 3.7±0.50.8 kpc.  相似文献

A new evaluation of chemical evolution coefficients has been made using recent stellar evolution and nucleosynthesis data. The role of the low and intermediate mass stars in galactic nucleosynthesis has been emphasized. A significant amount of4He,12C and neutron-rich species is found to be contributed by these stars. Comparison with observed abundances suggests a primary origin of14N. The simple model of galactic evolution with the new coefficients has been used to derive the ratio of helium to heavy element enrichment in the Galaxy. The new stellar evolution data do not explain the large value of this ratio that has been determined observationally.  相似文献

A possible scenario for the evolution of the universe following the big bang at t > 10-5 sec is considered. The necessary conditions that must be present for the formation of stars and stellar systems to be possible are formulated. As a condition for the formation of stars we take kTs≤ GMsmp(3R), and for stellar systems HR ? (GM/R)1/2, where Ts is the temperature of the cosmic plasma, mp is the mass of a proton, Ms is the mass of a star, M is the mass of a stellar cluster, R is the radius of these celestial bodies, and H is the bubble parameter for the corresponding time. In accordance with these criteria, we assume that in the course of cosmological expansion, neutron stars should have been formed first (times 2.10-4 ? t ? 1 sec, densities 0.07 ? ρB? 2.104 g/cm3) and then, in chronological order, appeared white dwarfs (t ≈ 102 sec, ρB ? 5.10-3 g/cm3), ordinary stars (t ≈ 4.106 sec, ?B ≈ 10-11 g/cm3), galactic nuclei (t ≈ 3.1011 sec, ?B ≈ 5.10-19 g/cm3, globular clusters (t ≈ 1013 sec, ?B ≈ 4.10-21 g/cm3), and galaxies (t ≈ 1015 sec, ?B ≈ 10-24 g/cm3), where ?B is the average density of ordinary (baryon) matter in the universe. It is shown that a galactic nucleus is a stellar system in statistical equilibrium and consists mainly of neutron stars and white dwarfs. The formation of some pulsars (neutron stars with angular rotation rates 1 < Ω < 200 sec-1) may occur in a galactic nucleus. Observed pulsars should therefore contain some fraction of neutron stars from the nucleus of the Galaxy that were able to escape it over the relaxation time (the tail of the Maxwell distribution, with star velocities v > v0, where v0 is the velocity corresponding to the work function 2GMMs/R, M being the mass and R the radius of the Galaxy’s nucleus.  相似文献

Wind flows and collimated jets are believed to be a feature of a range of disc accreting systems. These include active galactic nuclei, T Tauri stars, X-ray binaries and cataclysmic variables. The observed collimation implies large-scale magnetic fields and it is known that dipole-symmetry fields of sufficient strength can channel wind flows emanating from the surfaces of a disc. The disc inflow leads to the bending of the poloidal magnetic field lines, and centrifugally driven magnetic winds can be launched when the bending exceeds a critical value. Such winds can result in angular momentum transport at least as effective as turbulent viscosity, and hence they can play a major part in driving the disc inflow.
It is shown here that if the standard boundary condition of vanishing viscous stress close to the stellar surface is applied, together with the standard connection between viscosity and magnetic diffusivity, then poloidal magnetic field bending increases as the star is approached with a corresponding increase in the wind mass loss rate. A significant amount of material can be lost from the system via the enhanced wind from a narrow region close to the stellar surface. This occurs for a Keplerian angular velocity distribution and for a modified form of angular velocity, which allows for matching of the disc and stellar rotation rates through a boundary layer above the stellar surface. The enhanced mass loss is significantly affected by the behaviour of the disc angular velocity as the stellar surface is approached, and hence by the stellar rotation rate. Such a mechanism may be related to the production of jets from the inner regions of disc accreting systems.  相似文献

ISOGAL is a survey at 7 and 15 μm with ISOCAM of the inner galactic disk and bulge of our Galaxy. The survey covers ∼ 22 deg2 in selected areas of the centrall = ±30 degree of the inner Galaxy. In this paper, we report the study of a small ISOGAL field in the inner galactic bulge (l = 0°,b = −1°, area = 0.033deg2). Using the multicolor nearinfrared data (IJKs) of DENIS (DEep Near Infrared Southern Sky Survey) and mid-infrared ISOGAL data, we discuss the nature of the ISOGAL sources. The various color-color and color-magnitude diagrams are discussed in the paper. While most of the detected sources are red giants (RGB tip stars), a few of them show an excess in J-Ks and Ks-[15] colors with respect to the red giant sequence. Most of them are probably AGB stars with large mass-loss rates.  相似文献

The mean density of the UV Cet-type flare stars in the solar neighbourhood is estimated. If differences of activity levels on different flare stars are taken into account, their summary flare activity is equivalent to 0.03 YZ CMi's flare activity per cubic parsec or to 4×1026 erg s–1 pc–3 in U-passband. From the X-ray flare observation on YZ CMi of 19.10.74 we estimate the luminosity of stellar flares in soft and intermediate X-ray. The ratio of X-ray to optical radiation for stellar flares is close to the respective ratio for strong solar chromospheric flares. It is shown the set of red-dwarf flare stars has all essential features of an ensemble of discrete X-ray sources to represent the galactic diffuse X-ray background.  相似文献

Ultraviolet spectra of population I WR stars obtained from IUE archive are used to determine fundamental stellar parameters. Terminal velocities for 85 galactic and LMC Wolf-Rayet stars were obtained by means of the empirical relation between spectral quantities easily measured in low resolution and high-resolution terminal velocity measurements. Temperatures and so-called transformed radii were derived based on available contour plots of spectral characteristics for a grid of NLTE models. The effect of the reddening law on stellar far ultraviolet continua is emphasized and the revised extinction curve towards WR stars is used for dereddening. For the sample of stars attributed to open clusters or associations we construct the stellar distance scale and adopt it for the other WR stars. The remaining fundamental parameters are derived and HR diagram for population I WR stars is presented.  相似文献
