The quality of aggregate used as buildings materials is defined by European Standard test methods. According to the agreement within the European Economic Area, each individual country decides test methods of current interest. Among the Nordic countries, the Los Angeles-, micro-Deval- and the Nordic test are the most common methods used to decide the mechanical properties of the aggregate. The three test methods are all drum test where the degradation of the material occur by rotation between the test material and steel balls together with, or without water. The mechanical test methods are empirical and are believed to express either resistance to fragmentation or wearing. The results of this study show that analysing the particle size distribution of a material after the drum testing give indication of which type and degree of degradation the test material is exposed to. Knowledge of the type of degradation for the test methods is important compared to the understanding of the real breakdown of the aggregate for instance used in road construction.  相似文献

钙质砂与钢界面的动力响应对岛礁地质条件下结构物基础的安全与稳定具有重要意义。基于界面环剪仪,开展了一系列钙质砂?钢界面循环剪切试验,探究了法向应力、剪切位移幅值和粒径大小对界面剪切刚度和阻尼比的影响,并与石英砂进行了对比。研究结果表明:法向应力和剪切位移幅值对界面剪切刚度和阻尼比起控制作用;法向应力的增大导致界面剪切刚度增大、阻尼比降低;剪切位移幅值的增大,则导致剪切刚度近似呈反比降低,而阻尼比近似呈对数增大;对于均一粒径的钙质砂,存在着分界粒径,使其剪切刚度和阻尼比的变化规律呈现显著区别;石英砂粒径较大时,其界面剪切刚度和阻尼比与钙质砂明显不同,而粒径较小时两类砂表现出类似的剪切刚度和阻尼比特性。  相似文献

Oil or gas production from unconsolidated reservoirs could be hampered by sand migration near the wellbore. This paper presents a numerical investigation of production-induced migration of fine sands towards a wellbore drilled in a gap-graded sediment. The solid–fluid interaction is simulated by coupling the discrete element method and the dynamic fluid mesh. With the merit of DEM and a dynamic mesh, the model is capable of naturally capturing particle movements and spatiotemporal variations of hydraulic properties of the sediment at the pore scale. The results show that fine particles are mobilized by radial flow under an imposed hydraulic gradient, and the increase in the hydraulic gradient causes an increase in the fines production. The microscopic pattern of sand migration is clearly visualized through the simulation. The presence of fine particles affects the process of fines migration through two competing mechanisms. Under a low fine content, fine sands mainly serve as the fines production source, and thus, fines production is enhanced as the fine content increases up to a critical value, beyond which fines production is weakened with a further increase in the fine content since the blocking effect gradually dominates. A barrier layer is likely formed during sand migration due to settling and jamming of fine sands at the throats of pores, as fine sands migrate with the radial flow towards the wellbore. This layer is helpful to slow down sand migration, while it could impede production due to reduced permeability in the affected reservoir.

Studies of grain fragmentation in natural streams have the limitation that the full size range of the debris produced is virtually unobtainable. Experiments described here for grain fragmentation in a rotating drum permitted the study of all of the debris, and a fragmentation load technique was used to relate experimentally and naturally fragmented material. The present investigation has been focused on granitic quartz. Relatively gentle collective movement in water can cause significant fragmentation of coarse, nascent, granitic quartz grains. The debris produced by rotating in a drum a range of single sieve fractions, taken from gravel in the headwaters of a stream draining granite, had continuous size distributions down to (and probably beyond) 0·06 μm. Quartz was the dominant fragmentation product in all fractions down to 2 μm and present in finer fractions. When pebbles moved with sand in these experiments, breakage of the latter was greatly increased. In comparison with that of breakage, the effect of attrition on granitic quartz was negligible. At least a proportion of granitic quartz grains are subject to a fatigue effect as a result of impacts in water. Evidently they are thus progressively weakened prior to being broken. Size analysis of debris showed a significant break at 20 μ, suggesting some special production of quartz particles just below this size. Granitic quartz is criss-crossed with partially healed cracks acquired before the zone of weathering is reached. The wholesale breakage that affects it, particularly in pebbly streams, is largely due to the reopening of these cracks. Progressive fragmentation of this material must eventually reach a stage wherein grains comprising single original crack-bounded volume elements are produced. Such grains, lacking significant internal weaknesses, must strongly resist further breakage. Possibly the preferential production of quartz grains just below 20 μm in size may represent an accumulation of these single, crack-bounded volume elements.  相似文献

This paper investigates the particle breakage behaviour of a carbonate sand based on single-particle compression experiments with in situ X-ray microtomography scanning (μCT) and a combined finite–discrete element method (FDEM). Specifically, X-ray μCT is applied to extract the information on grain morphology and intra-particle pores of carbonate sand particles to establish an FDEM model. The model is first calibrated by comparing the simulation results of two carbonate sand grains with the corresponding single-particle compression experiment results and then applied to model the stress evolution, cracking propagation and failure of other carbonate sand particles under single-particle compression. To study the influence of intra-particle pores, FDEM modelling of carbonate sands with completely filled intra-particle pores is also performed. The particle strength of carbonate sands both with and without pore filling is found to follow a Weibull distribution, with that of the sand with pore filling being considerably higher. This behaviour is associated with lower stress concentration, resulting in later crack development in the pore-filled sand than in the sand without pore filling. The cracks are found to usually pass through the intra-particle pores. Consequently, a larger proportion of particles fail in the fragmentation mode in the sand without pore filling.

THE CARBONATE FRACTION OF BEACH AND DUNE SANDS   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The sand size carbonate fractions of beach and dune sands from the southeastern U.S. Atlantic coast were investigated from the standpoint of mineralogy, roundness and size distribution. The carbonate fractions of beach-dune sands used in this study range in abundance from less than 1% to over 40% and average about 10%. Calcium carbonate is least abundant in Georgia beaches and increases slightly to the north and greatly to the south. The size distribution of the carbonate fraction is similar to that of the non-carbonate fraction since both have been distributed by the same processes. The variable flat shape of calcareous fragments causes the carbonate fraction to be usually coarser and more poorly sorted than the acid insoluble residues of the samples. No regional relationship between roundness and wave energies was found in sand size materials although field observations indicate high energies strikingly round gravel sized calcareous fragments. There is some tendency for angularity to increase with decreasing grain size in the sand sizes as with quartz grains. The mineralogy of beach sand carbonate fractions is characterized by the almost total absence of high My calcite. Aragonite is the dominant mineral.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Weathering simulations carried out using a climatic cabinet have demonstrated that diurnal temperature and humidity variations typical of those occurring in warm desert environments are ineffective in causing static breakage of quartz dune sand and polymineralic regolith sand grains. Wetting and drying combined with temperature variations was also found to be a relatively ineffective weathering process. These results suggest that 'crack tip' processes are insignificant where mineral grains are not subject to static loading. Sodium sulphate weathering was found to cause slight damage to quartz dune sand grains and major damage to first cycle regolith grains. Feldspars and mica in the regolith sands were more susceptible to salt action than quartz. Salt weathering of the regolith sands produced substantial quantities of silt in the size range typically found in natural loess deposits.  相似文献

The only reported occurrence of quartz-rich sands in Jamaica is on the plains of Black River, St Elizabeth, where they outcrop in isolated pockets. The sands overlie limestones of the White Limestone Supergroup and the Coastal Group, and partly underlie Holocene peat deposits. Monocrystalline quartz, containing fluid and mineral inclusions, is the dominant mineral of the sands, with the heavy minerals. magnetite, haematite, epidote, rutile, anatase, zircon and tourmaline, occurring in minor amounts. Grain surface texture studies of the quartz grains have identified a series of mechanical and chemical features. Microtextures depicting marine, aeolian and pedological environments have been retained on the grains and represent the last three stages in the history of the grains. The petrography of the sands indicates an igneous provenance, with the major source of the detrital minerals being the Cretaceous granitoids that outcrop in the eastern half of the island. These rocks were unroofed during the uplift of Jamaica in the Late Tertiary and were subjected to extensive chemical weathering, which accounted for the breakdown of the majority of their primary silicate minerals. Fluvial transportation and deposition of detritus onto the shelf of the south coast commenced during this period and continued into the Pleistocene, providing terrigenous sand that was modified along the coast to quartz arenite by moderate to high energy marine conditions. Tidal currents, east-west longshore currents and weathering contributed to the maturity of the sand by the time it had been transported along the shelf to the vicinity of Black River. During low sea level stands in the Pleistocene, some of this sediment that became trapped on the shelf was blown inland by south-east winds.  相似文献

利用高压三轴渗透试验系统,对某矿区深部的粗砂和细砂进行了高围压条件下的渗透试验。研究了同一水力梯度下渗透系数与围压的关系;同一围压下渗透系数与渗透水力梯度的关系;同一水力梯度下,围压逐级加载的渗透系数与一次加载的渗透系数之间的差别。结果表明,粗砂和细砂在同一水力梯度下渗透系数均随围压的增大而逐渐减小,在同一围压下,渗透系数会随渗透水力梯度的增大而逐渐增大;同一水力梯度下,围压逐级加载下的渗透系数明显小于一次加载条件下的渗透系数。根据围压与渗透系数的关系拟合出了两种砂样渗透系数与围压关系的数学表达式。为探究高围压下渗透系数变化的原因,研究了砂样试验过程中的体积变化和试验前后的粒度成分变化。结果表明,围压的施加过程伴随着试样的体积减小,相应的孔隙度减小,渗透系数降低;高围压条件下,砂土颗粒被挤碎成细颗粒,使得砂土的细粒含量增多,孔隙度减小,导致了砂土渗透系数的降低。  相似文献

Uppermost sands of the Red Crag at Walton-on-the-Naze (Essex) and elsewhere in East Anglia have been decalcified to iron-stained quartz sands. In contrast, lower sands are only minimally altered and contain aragonitic and calcitic shells. Aragonitic shells are slightly dissolved (chalkified), but calcitic shells are unaffected. Cementation is limited to an addition of iron oxides, now mainly haematite, which also coat carbonate grains. Abundant iron-oxide fines in the upper decalcified sands were liberated from the coatings of shells; shells that have since dissolved. The diagenetic nature of the contact between decalcified upper and unaffected lower sands is evident where it transects cross-bedding. The contact is knife-sharp, even smoothly truncating large shells, and is usually planar and subhorizontal. Shelly sands immediately beneath the boundary contain similar amounts of aragonitic material, as do sands further below. Locally the decalcification boundary has been contorted by cryoturbation, implying that carbonate dissolution was a Pleistocene event. Decalcification probably occurred when the area was affected by permafrost. Lower sands were cemented by ice and protected from dissolution. Upper sands were above the ice table and subject to chemically aggressive waters during summer thaws. Decalcification is believed to have taken place during an episode of climate amelioration when downward retreat of the ice table accompanied replacement of tundra by boreal forest. Highly acidic and podzolic soils developed, beneath which shell-carbonate dissolved. Sharp based decalcified zones in Lowestoft Till and Devensian deposits in other parts of England can also be attributed to dissolution associated with permafrost.  相似文献

A unique association of beds containing fenestral pore-filling medium crystalline dolomite with beds of dolospar and quartz sandstone occurs in the Lower Devonian Camsell Formation. Many of these sandstones consist almost entirely of dolospar sand. Sedimentological, petrographic, cathodoluminescent and chemical data indicate that the dolospar sands consist of grains that have been eroded and reworked during Camsell deposition from fenestral dolostone beds that directly underlie these sandstones. Erosional truncation of individual dolomite crystals and of intracrystalline cathodoluminescent zonations along the edges of sand grains indicates that either dolomitization, or dolomite cementation of the pore-filling carbonate cements within fenestrae of the fenestral fabrics, occurred before erosion and deposition of dolospar sand. The fine details of the cathodoluminescent zonations suggest that the pore-filling fenestral dolomite originated as primary cements that underwent some annealing recrystallization under the influence of high subsurface temperatures. This unique occurrence may document synsedimentary Devonian cementation by medium to coarsely crystalline dolomite.  相似文献

Few studies have examined the hydrodynamic behaviour of carbonate sediments. The data presented here are the result of preliminary research on entrainment in well- and poorly sorted carbonate sands. Experiments were performed using naturally occurring sediments in a tilting, recirculating freshwater flume. Results indicate that when of similar size, shape and density, the transport threshold of carbonate sands is similar to that of quartz. However, owing to their lower density and often platy or irregular shape, skeletal sands require a lower shear stress to initiate transport. Because the density of carbonate particles may increasingly vary with grain size, the threshold of motion in coarse carbonate grains may differ more markedly from that of quartz. In poorly sorted samples, results show that the coarse-grained constituents move before the finer-grained components. Grain properties and boundary-layer dynamics are believed to explain this phenomenon. Rollability of the larger grains combined with physical trapping and immersion within a low velocity sublayer are believed to prevent finer particles from moving. Given the appropriate sediments and flow conditions, it may therefore be possible to deposit and preserve fine-grained sediments in a flow regime typically thought to transport such materials.  相似文献

The 1971 San Fernando earthquake led to the failure and large displacement of the Lower San Fernando Dam (LSFD) that was constructed by the hydraulic filling method. As such, hydraulic filling has been recognised as producing liquefiable sand deposits, while in situ relative densities as large as 60% have been reported in the LSFD. On the other hand, laboratory element tests on loosest pluviated (through air or water, resembling the soil fabric produced by hydraulic filling) specimens of primarily quartz sands have been dilative, questioning the failure mechanism of the LSFD. In this paper, the LSFD during the 1971 San Fernando earthquake is studied using the results of improved sliding block deformation analyses that incorporate shearing behaviour of two sands with different mineralogies (quartz sand and albite sand with some carbonates) from ring shear tests. The results indicate that sand particle composition and compressibility in the LSFD may have caused its failure and very large deformations even at a dense state (relative density ~60%).  相似文献

Geotechnical reconnaissance of a recurrent liquefaction site at a Quaternary alluvial deposit in southern Taiwan was conducted to establish a comprehensive case history for liquefaction on silty fine sand with high fines content. The liquefaction occurred at a silty fine sand layer with D50 = 0.09 mm and fines content greater than 35% and was triggered by a Mw = 6.4 earthquake on March 4, 2010, which induced maximum horizontal acceleration up to 0.189 g at the site. In situ subsurface characterizations, including standard penetration test, cone penetration test, and shear wave velocity measurement, were performed as well as cyclic simple shear tests on undisturbed specimens retrieved by a modified hydraulic piston sampler. Comparisons of cyclic resistance ratios (CRRs) indicate that CPT sounding with standard penetration rate could overestimate the resistance ratio and drainage conditions during penetration should be considered for high fines content soil in the liquefaction analysis. Additionally, variations of CRRs from different in situ tests indicate that correlations among in situ tests and CRR could be soil specific and precautions should be taken when using these curves on silty fine sands.  相似文献

Aeolian transport rates were measured for three sands: a quartz sand (relative density 2.68, sphericity 0.73), a shelly sand (relative density 2.64, sphericity 0.59, carbonate content 67%), and granular aluminium oxide (relative density 3.95, sphericity 0.67). Low sphericity depresses the transport rate, particularly at high wind speeds; high density also does so but the effect is more marked at low transporting wind speeds. The sand of low sphericity undergoes longer saltations than the other materials, but is dislodged less frequently than they are and is transported less freely in a given wind. Of the more spherical materials, the denser was the least effective at extracting energy from the wind for grain transport in the range of our experiments. Both of the more spherical materials showed evidence of a fairly sudden transition of transport behaviour at modest wind speed. It is inferred that this marks the transfer of the function of grain dislodgement from direct wind action to inter-granular collision. The transition did not occur in experiments on the material of lower sphericity. For a given transport rate, wind speed near the bed is highest for the grains of low sphericity (by a considerable margin) and lowest for the more compact quartz grains. Propensity for transport by wind is greatest for the quartz sand, less so for the heavy material and least for the material of low sphericity.  相似文献

石英砂原矿质量的优劣,有害杂质铁、铝的赋存状态及其在各粒级砂矿中的分布,是决定选矿效果的关键。当有害杂质赋存于泥中或呈颗粒状态存在时,通过水洗脱泥,螺旋溜槽流程极易选别,水力分级和振动筛起到去粗弃细的效果;擦洗可除去部分薄膜铁,而包裹铁、固溶铁一般难于剔除。福建生产玻璃砂的矿山均采用喷射泵采砂船水下开采,自上而下玻璃砂、型砂一次采空,建议选矿样要按大块段采集,玻璃砂、型砂分别包装,先作小样除铁效果试验并确定玻璃砂、型砂的混合比例,再进行选矿流程试验,以免造成整个样品达不到选矿目的。  相似文献

Analysis of Quaternary sands from coastal Somalia indicates the potential for economically useful glass-sand components and heavy minerals. The sands occur in four distinct stratigraphic levels and form subparallel ridges. Four components are present in all sand specimens: calcium carbonate, quartz, feldspars, and green hornblende; mineral compositions vary along a sea- ward-landward progression. The red sands are characterized by silica dissolution-precipitation features and alteration to laterite products.  相似文献

石英颗粒表面微结构的研究是随着电子显微镜应用到地质学上而发展起来的。近年来利用扫描电镜观察石英颗粒表面形态特征及差异来研究沉积物物质来源、搬运方式和沉积环境已在我国开展起来。本文是在对闽南-台湾浅滩陆架的地形、沉积物粒度研究基础上,用JSM-50A扫描电镜观察、研究石英颗粒表面微结构时,发现调查海区的(中砂)沉积物中的石英颗粒具有各种微结构,反映特有的沉积环境。  相似文献

Carbonate cementation of some carbonate and quartz sands in three raised beaches of temperate origins was investigated. The carbonate of the cements was found to have been derived from the dissolution of skeletal debris. The sandstones, so produced, now possess only low-magnesium calcite, but the original sediments, like adjacent modern beach and blown sands, probably contained low-magnesium calcite, aragonite and some high-magnesium calcite, all of skeletal origin. In meteoric water the dissolution has occurred of all carbonate within minute, tubulelike, volumes of sand. Concurrent deposition in adjacent volumes of sand of low-magnesium calcite formed cements that are irregularly nodular or uneven on a small scale. Aragonite within the minute nodules has been replaced paramorphically by low-magnesium calcite. Additional local carbonate cements were formed at later dates, around and within solution pipes.  相似文献
