In this study we show that the number, position and shape of stripes were sufficiently unique to demonstrate that juvenile Eurasian perch Perca fluviatilis can be individually identified based on their stripe patterns. The stripe patterns in perch and also other species may thus be used in experiments as an alternative to conventional marking techniques that frequently cause stress to the fish.  相似文献

Three different methods to analyse fine sediment deposits on a gravel bar using pictures are presented in this paper. A manual digitization and deposits zone delineation are performed as well as two different automated procedures. The three methods are applied on aerial pictures taken in 2006 by a drone from a height around 150 m above the study site. Two other sets of pictures taken in 2010 are also studied: the first set was obtained from the left side bank of the river at approximately 15m above the gravel bar whereas the second one was taken from a helicopter flying 600~m above the ground. These methods were used to estimate the surface of fine sediment deposits before and after flushing events. They yield similar results even if the first automated procedure is able to capture smaller patches of fine sediments. The total surface of fine sediment deposits seems to be similar before and after a flushing event, but the distribution appears quite different. Before a flushing event, a significant amount of fine sediment deposits are mixed with coarser sediments. After the flushing event, one can observe more large fine sediment deposits located on the downstream part of the secondary channel and at the channel margin. Most of the small fine sediment deposit patches were washed out. A short discussion is provided on the possible dynamics of fine sediment deposits over the gravel bar.  相似文献

Using the 7 100 absolute first arrivals of P waves and 91 513 relative P arrival times of 726 events at the northeastern margin of the Ordos block since 2009, the 3D fine structure of P wave velocity within the depth of 15km in the crust was inverted by the double difference seismic tomography method. The results show that there exist obvious high-speed continuous bodies in the northwest of the study area, and their lateral areas increase gradually with depth, while the velocity of east and south is relatively low. The velocity inhomogeneity exists and differs at different depths. The lateral differences of velocity are related to seismicity and faults. The 5~15km depth profile shows that earthquakes tend to occur in the area with relatively high velocity or high speed transition zones, which to some extent reflects the fragility of regional crustal media and the strong differential movement of faults in vertical and horizontal directions where the crust body is easy to absorb and store strain energy and generate major earthquakes. A "Y"-shape low-velocity channel is present in the lower crust around Liangcheng, corresponding to the NW-trending Heilaoyao-Shahukou fault set, which may reveal the migration path of the Late Tertiary-Quaternary basalt eruption. The Helingeer M6.2 earthquake in 1976 was related to the formation of the locking section of the thermal welding in this area. The three-dimensional fine structure of P wave velocity presented in this paper provides intuitive seismological evidence for physical and chemical properties of crustal media and the deep tectonic environment of earthquake preparation.  相似文献

Sorted stripes found on the volcanic scoria and glacial deposits of sub-Antarctic Marion Island indicate a distinct preferred orientation. Despite uniformity of slope and material, the stripes are predominantly aligned parallel to the wind. It is suggested that melting of needle ice by the early morning sun is of only limited importance in the sub-Antarctic owing to the almost continual overcast conditions. The effect of the wind is so great that in exposed situations stripes are formed on horizontal surfaces.  相似文献

由于GRACE卫星数据解算的时变重力场模型中高阶位系数存在误差,这些误差在重力异常图中表现为南北向的条带噪声,在应用GRACE时变重力场数据时必须进行滤波.本文在空间域引入了一种有效消除GRACE时变重力场条带噪声的平滑先验信息方法,并将其与目前常用的高斯滤波和去相关误差等滤波方法分别应用于合成的质量变化趋势数字模型,检测不同滤波方法消除条带噪声的能力及其对真实信号的影响.滤波结果显示,与目前常用的高斯滤波和去相关误差滤波器相比,本文滤波方法在有效移除条带噪声的同时,具有有效信号幅度衰减小、有效信号形变小以及保存了更多的短波长细节信息等优势;此外,统计结果显示,本文滤波结果在信号最大值、最小值以及残差均方根等方面均与模拟真实信号最为接近.相比300km高斯平滑和组合滤波结果,有效信号振幅的极小值和极大值分别提高了约18%和6%,残差均方根分别降低了25%和33%.说明本文滤波方法移除GRACE相关误差的同时,在保留有效信号方面具有明显的优势.  相似文献

Studying the processes generating different-scale inhomogeneities is one of the challenging problems of ionospheric physics. Plasma instabilities are one of the physical mechanisms by which small-scale inhomogeneities are formed. The main forms of instability in the ionospheric E-layer are two-stream and gradient-drift ones. The inhomogeneities generated by them lead to an abnormally intense radio scattering of different wavelengths (known as coherent echo (CE) or radio aurora) in the E-layer. Therefore, the method of radiowave backscattering is among the widely used methods for studying such inhomogeneities. The CE phenomenon has been investigated most intensely at high and equatorial latitudes, where the conditions for the CE origination are formed rather regularly. For the last decade, CE has also been intensely studied at midlatitudes, where it is observed less frequently and its formation conditions are less known. In 1998–2006, the purposeful studies of the midlatitude CE peculiarities were performed at the Irkutsk incoherent scatter (IS) radar, with a particular emphasis on its coherent properties. It was for the first time found out that the spectra of some data sets had a fine comb-shaped structure, which generated well-known single-humped CE spectra as a result of statistical averaging. In the scope of this study, unique coherent methods for processing individual data sets of CE signals were developed, making it possible to reveal the peculiarities of unaveraged CE-signal spectra. To describe these peculiarities, we proposed a new model of the inhomogeneity spectrum, which is the superposition of the discrete set of spatial harmonics with close wave numbers. The model was shown to adequately describe the scattered signal characteristics observed experimentally.  相似文献

It is widely recognized nowadays that there are at least two different phases of bedload sediment transport in gravel‐bed rivers. However, the transition between these phases is still poorly or subjectively defined, especially at bends in rivers, where cross‐stream sediment transport can strongly influence changes in the texture of the transported sediment. In this paper, we use piecewise models to identify objectively, at two points in the cross‐section of a river bend, the discharge at which the transition between bedload transport phases occurs. Piecewise models were applied to a new bedload data set collected during a wide range of discharges while analysing the associated changes in sediment texture. Results allowed the identification of two well‐differentiated phases of sediment transport (phase I and phase II), with a breakpoint located around bankfull discharge. Associated with each phase there was a change in bedload texture. In phase I there was non‐dominance in the transport of fine or coarse fractions at a particular sampling point; but in phase II bedload texture was strongly linked to the position of the sampling point across the channel. In this phase, fine particles tended to be transported to the inner bank, while coarse sizes were transferred throughout the middle parts of the channel. Moreover, bedload texture at the inner sampling point became bimodal while the transport of pebble‐sized particles was increasing in the central parts of the river channel. It is suggested that this general pattern may be related both to secondary currents, which transfer finer particles from the outer to the inner bank, and to the progressive dismantling of the riverbed surface layer. Cyanobacteria are known to form a crust on soil surfaces holding soil particles together and thereby offering resistance to erosion. A controlled experiment was carried out to throw light on this issue. The experiment consisted of subjecting erosion cups filled with soil to artificial rainfall in the laboratory. Three sets of erosion cups, each set consisting of six, were used. One set consisted of soil with inoculated cyanobacteria and the second set consisted of soil with naturally colonized cyanobacteria, both over a period of about 8 months. The third set consisted of soil with no bacterial growth. The results indicate that the soil erosion cups with the inoculated cyanobacterial crust had at least one order of magnitude less erosion for coarse soils, and about two orders of magnitude less erosion for fine soils, compared with erosion cups with no bacterial crust. Visible-band satellite pictures of the Irish Sea reveal the presence of isolated areas of enhanced turbidity which are geographically fixed and present all year, although they are more strongly marked in winter. The positions of these maxima coincide with areas of fast tidal currents: some of the dissipated tidal energy is used to raise fine sediments into suspension, producing the turbidity. However, there is no obvious source of fine sediment at the maxima, and without a source they would be expected to diffuse away, down the turbidity gradient. Their continued presence is therefore a puzzle, and it has proved difficult to reproduce these features in numerical models. Recent observations, presented here, suggest a possible mechanism by which isolated turbidity maxima may be maintained. These measurements show that the gradients of concentration on the sides of the turbidity maximum are in opposite senses for different particle sizes, and that there is a flux of fine particles out of the maximum and one of larger particles into it. A mechanism which can explain this observation, and which can also explain the continued presence of turbidity maxima isolated from a local source is as follows: the high turbulent energy levels at the centre of the patch tear flocculated particles apart. These fine particles then diffuse away down the gradient of fine particles and to areas of lower energy. Here they aggregate to form larger particles which diffuse back down the gradient of large particles towards the centre of the turbidity maximum, where they are torn up and the cycle continues. The source of material for the turbidity maxima is therefore larger flocculated particles in the surrounding water. This idea is tested quantitatively with an analytical solution to the steady-state diffusion equation incorporating aggregation and dis-aggregation of particles as simple functions of turbulent energy. The solution shows that isolated maxima of fine suspended particles can be maintained at regions of high turbulence without the necessity to invoke a local (non-sustainable) source. Within the maximum, strong vertical mixing lifts the slow settling fine particles to the surface to produce an isolated surface turbidity maximum as observed. We conclude that for models to successfully produce turbidity maxima in the presence of diffusion they should incorporate at least two particle size classes and aggregation and dis-aggregation of particles according to the local level of turbulence.  相似文献

The orientation of sorted stripes developed in glacial deposits on Marion Island is examined. This study confirms earlier reports of preferential occurrence of sorted stripes on windward slopes. However, sorted stripes were also found to occur on low angle leeward slopes. Mechanisms for the orientation of sorted stripes by wind action are discussed. For about three decades helicopter-borne electromagnetic (HEM) measurements have been used to reveal the resistivity distribution of the upper one hundred metres of the earth's subsurface. HEM systems record secondary fields, which are 3–6 orders of magnitude smaller than the transmitted primary fields. As both the primary fields and the secondary fields are present at the receivers, well-designed bucking coils are often used to reduce the primary fields at the receivers to a minimum. Remaining parts of the primary fields, the zero levels, are generally corrected by subtracting field values recorded at high altitudes (standard zero levelling) or estimated from resistivities of neighbouring lines or from resistivity maps (advanced zero levelling). These zero-levelling techniques enable the correction for long-term, quasi-linear instrumental drift. Short-term variations caused by temperature changes due to altitude variations, however, cannot be completely corrected by this procedure resulting in stripe patterns on thematic maps.Statistical methods and/or 2-D filter techniques called statistical levelling (tie-line levelling) and empirical levelling (microlevelling), respectively, used to correct stripe patterns in airborne geophysical data sets are, in general, not directly applicable to HEM data. Because HEM data levelling faces the problem that the parameter affected by zero-level errors, the secondary field, differs from the parameter generally levelled, the apparent resistivity. Furthermore, the dependency of the secondary field on both the resistivity of the subsurface and the sensor altitude is strongly nonlinear.A reasonable compromise is to microlevel both half-space parameters: apparent resistivity and apparent depth, followed by a recalculation of the secondary field components based on the half-space parameters levelled. Advantages and disadvantages of the diverse levelling techniques are discussed using a HEM data set obtained in a hilly region along the Saale River between the cities of Saalfeld and Jena in central Germany. It turns out from a comparison of apparent resistivity and apparent depth maps derived from levelled HEM data that manually advanced zero levelling of major level errors and automatic microlevelling of remaining minor level errors yield the best results.  相似文献

This paper examines a variety of recirculation flow patterns that develop in the groyne fields on rivers. A comprehensive data set was obtained from flume experiments at Delft University of Technology and field measurements performed on the Elbe River in Germany. The analysis focuses on patterns of velocity, scour and deposition, and corresponding change of riverbed morphology. The results show that velocity patterns in the groyne fields depend mainly on the aspect ratio between groyne length and length of groyne field. When the aspect ratio is greater than 0·5, a one‐gyre pattern of recirculation develops, while at groyne fields with aspect ratios less than 0·5 a two‐gyre recirculation pattern emerges. The spatial distribution of fine‐sediment deposition between the groynes coincides with the locations of gyres. Moreover, the thickness of the fine‐sediment layer decreases toward the gyre margins where recirculation velocities are greatest. Although the total concentration of suspended sediment in the river does not change considerably as the flow moves through the groyne field, the biological and gravimetrical composition of the suspended material changes substantially within the groyne field. The present work focuses on the study of the main ophiolite complex ofNorthern Greece, which is one of the dominant geological features in thebroader Aegean area, by the use of geophysical (gravity and magnetic)data. This ophiolite complex, which trends in a NW-SE direction, startsat the eastern part of the borders of Greece with F.Y.R.O.M. and continuesup to the southern part of the Chalkidiki Peninsula. The ophiolites mainlyconsist of dense, high-susceptibility peridotitic and gabbroic rocks. As aresult, the southwestern part of the ophiolitic complex, which crosses thenorthwestern part of the Chalkidiki-Peninsula, gives rise to both highamplitude aeromagnetic and Bouguer anomaly values. On the other hand,the Axios-Thermaikos basin, which is situated at the western border of theophiolitic complex, exhibits a deep sedimentary cover that results in lowBouguer anomaly values. The corresponding Bouguer anomaly decreasesto the southwest, indicating an increase of the sedimentary layer thicknessin that direction.2.5-D inversion was applied to both the aeromagnetic and the Bouguergravity data along several profiles. All the profiles were oriented normalto the main trend of the ophiolitic complex. Information from two deepboreholes, as well as the surface occurrence of the ophiolites was used asconstrains to the inversion scheme. The produced model shows an averagesedimentary thickness of 2.5 km along the coastline. From the joint inversionof the Bouguer and aeromagnetic anomaly data the existence of two ophioliticstripes is revealed. The first ``external' one is located in the southwest part, while the other ``internal' one to the northeast part of the belt. In the internal one, the depth extent of the ophiolites was estimated to range between 1 to 4 km. Moreover, the ophiolites were found to dip towards the northeast, but their dip varies from 20–45° in the northern part to 10–15° in the southern part of the stripe. For the ``external' stripe the extent of the ophiolitic bodies varies from northwest to southeast, reaching its highest depth of 5 km to the south. This stripe is also dipping towards the northeast with a dip of 10–15°.  相似文献

The long-wavelength propagation and attenuation characteristics of three geological structures that frequently occur in reservoir environments are investigated using a theoretical model that consists of a stack of fine and viscoelastic plane layers, with the layers being either solid or fluid. Backus theory properly describes fine layering and a set of fluid-filled microfractures, under the assumption that interfaces between different materials are bonded. The effects of saturation on wave attenuation are modelled by the relative values of the bulk and shear quality factors. The anisotropic quality factor in a fine-layered system shows a variety of behaviours depending on the saturation and velocities of the single constituents. The wave is less attenuated along the layering direction when the quality factors are proportional to velocity, and vice versa when inversely proportional to velocity. Fractured rocks have very anisotropic wavefronts and quality factors, in particular for the shear modes which are strongly dependent on the characteristics of the fluid filling the microfractures. When the size of the boundary layer is much smaller than the thickness of the fluid layer, the stack of solid-fluid layers becomes a layered porous media of the Biot type. This behaviour is caused by the slip-wall condition at the interface between the solid and the fluid. As in Biot theory, there are two compressional waves, but here the medium is anisotropic and the slow wave does not propagate perpendicular to the layers. Moreover, this wave shows pronounced cusps along the layering direction, like shear waves in a very anisotropic single-phase medium.  相似文献

We analyze complex zebra patterns and fiber bursts during type-IV solar radio bursts on August 1, 2010. It was shown that all of the main details of sporadic zebra patterns can be explained within the model of zebra patterns and fiber bursts during the interaction of plasma waves with whistlers. In addition, it was shown that the major variations in the stripes of the zebra patterns are caused by the scattering mechanism of fast particles on whistlers, which leads to the transition of whistler instability from the normal Doppler effect to an anomalous one.  相似文献

高温环境下,岩石表现为明显的宏观破裂特征. 本实验在细观尺度下观测了不同温度条件下,阜新细砂岩的矿物组分和微结构及其发展变化,以及内部微裂纹的发生和发展. 从实验中观察到,自150℃开始,阜新细砂岩微裂纹数量有剧烈的增加,并达到峰值;当温度超过210℃以后,可见裂纹的数量呈下降趋势并逐渐稳定;当温度达到810℃,细砂岩裂纹数量出现第二个增长峰值. 结果表明随着温度变化,细砂岩存在热破裂阀值.  相似文献

The Filakopi Pumice Breccia (FPB) is a very well exposed, Pliocene volcaniclastic unit on Milos, Greece, and has a minimum bulk volume of 1 km3. It consists of three main units: (A) basal lithic breccia (4–8 m) mainly composed of angular to subangular, andesitic and dacitic clasts up to 2.6 m in diameter; (B) very thickly bedded, poorly sorted pumice breccia (16–17 m); and (C) very thick, reversely graded, grain-supported, coarse pumice breccia (6.5–20 m), at the top. The depositional setting is well constrained as shallow marine (up to a few hundred metres) by overlying fossiliferous and bioturbated mudstone. This large volume of fine pumice clasts is interpreted to be the product of an explosive eruption from a submarine vent because: (1) pumice clasts are the dominant component; (2) the coarse pumice clasts (>64 mm) have complete quenched margins; (3) very large (>1 m) pumice clasts are common; (4) overall, the formation shows good hydraulic sorting; and (5) a significant volume of ash was deposited together with the coarsest pyroclasts.The bed forms in units A and B suggest deposition from lithic-rich and pumiceous, respectively, submarine gravity currents. In unit C, the coarse (up to 6.5 m) pumice clasts are set in matrix that grades upwards from diffusely stratified, fine (1–2 cm) pumice clasts at the base to laminated shard rich mud at the top. The coarse pumice clasts in unit C were settled from suspension and the framework was progressively infilled by fine pumice clasts from waning traction currents and then by water-settled ash. The FPB displays important features of the products of submarine explosive eruptions that result from the ambient fluid being seawater, rather than volcanic gas or air. In particular, submarine pyroclastic deposits are characterised by the presence of very coarse juvenile pumice clasts, pumice clasts with complete quenched rims, and good hydraulic sorting.Electronic Supplementary Material Supplementary material is available for this article if you access the article at . As one of the world's most active intracontinental mountain belts, Tien Shan has posed questions for researchers regarding the formation of different tectonic units and active shallow seismicity. Here, we used a huge data set comprising of 7094 earthquakes from local, regional and teleseismic seismic stations. We used waveform modeling and multi-scale double-difference earthquake relocation technique to better constrain the source parameters of the earthquakes. The new set of events provided us with better initial earthquake locations for further tomographic investigation. We found that reverse-faulting earthquakes dominate the whole study area while the fault plane solutions for earthquakes beneath the northwestern Tarim Basin and the Main Pamir Thrust are diverse. There is a low-velocity anomaly beneath Bashkaingdy at depth of 80 km, and high-velocity anomalies beneath central Tien Shan at shallower depths. These observations are the keys to understand the mechanism of Tien Shan's formation because of Tarim Basin northward and Kazakh Shield's southward subduction in the south and north respectively. Velocities beneath western Tien Shan are relatively high. We thus infer that the Western Tien Shan is relatively less deformed than the eastern Tien Shan primarily due to a relatively brittle mantle.  相似文献

Using a combination of field, laboratory and micromorphological evidence, this study examines tafoni (singular, tafone) in the El Chorro area of Andalucia, southern Spain, and makes inferences concerning the processes responsible for their formation. Twenty-five tafoni were randomly selected for field examination. The morphology of these cavernous rock domes is characterized by a helmet-shaped outer roof and an arched-shaped cavern, often with a partially overhanging visor; measurements of height, width and depth of the caverns revealed marked variations in size. The presence or absence of lichen cover, surface varnish, overhanging visor, cavern backwall stripes, rock flaking, weathering pits and cavern floor sediments was also noted. Surface hardness values, obtained using a Schmidt hammer, are relatively low but significantly higher on the outer roof of the tafoni than on the inner cavern walls. Analysis of sediment samples collected from the cavern backwalls and floors indicates predominantly sandy textures, alkaline pH values and some base cation enrichment. Micromorphological analysis of thin sections, prepared from undisturbed blocks, reveals large quantities of pore-filling cement, consisting mainly of calcite, mineral grains affected by weathering and pseudomorphic replacement, and dark, rounded nodules with a metallic appearance. In terms of their formation, different processes appear to act on different parts of the landform. On the outer roof surfaces, case hardening, resulting from near-surface cementation and surface varnish development, is dominant. On the inner cavern surfaces, however, core softening, resulting from granular disintegration and flaking, dominates. Exfoliation weathering, running water and wind deflation also appear to play an important role in tafone formation. A phased model of tafone evolution is proposed whereby the features pass through four phases of development–initiation, enlargement, amalgamation and degradation; in the study area there are examples of tafoni in each of these phases.
