Experimental techniques for testing dynamically substructured systems are currently receiving attention in a wide range of structural, aerospace and automotive engineering environments. Dynamic substructuring enables full‐size, critical components to be physically tested within a laboratory (as physical substructures), while the remaining parts are simulated in real‐time (as numerical substructures). High quality control is required to achieve synchronization of variables at the substructuring interfaces and to compensate for additional actuator system(s) dynamics, nonlinearities, uncertainties and time‐varying parameters within the physical substructures. This paper presents the substructuring approach and associated controller designs for performance testing of an aseismic, base‐isolation system, which is comprised of roller‐pendulum isolators and controllable, nonlinear magnetorheological dampers. Roller‐pendulum isolators are typically mounted between the protected structure and its foundation and have a fundamental period of oscillation far‐removed from the predominant periods of any earthquake. Such semi‐active damper systems can ensure safety and performance requirements, whereas the implementation of purely active systems can be problematic in this respect. A linear inverse dynamics compensation and an adaptive controller are tailored for the resulting nonlinear synchronization problem. Implementation results favourably compare the effectiveness of the adaptive substructuring method against a conventional shaking‐table technique. A 1.32% error resulted compared with the shaking‐table response. Ultimately, the accuracy of the substructuring method compared with the response of the shaking‐table is dependent upon the fidelity of the numerical substructure. Real-time dynamic substructuring (RTDS) is an experimental technique that splits the structure under test into coupled parts that run in parallel. The structural component exhibiting unpredictable behaviour is tested in the laboratory while the remainder of the structure is modelled numerically. As the test proceeds, the dynamic force state at the physical–numerical interface is measured and a transfer system, usually a servo-hydraulic actuator or shaking table, is used to impose the commensurate response on the physical substructure. The integral dynamics of servo-hydraulic transfer systems can frustrate RTDS implementation by destabilising the system. Many have noted the deleterious stability implications of excessive phase lag in terms of a pure time-delay. However, because of the existence of magnitude variations and more complex phase characteristics, pure time-delay is too simple to represent the inherent nature of servo-hydraulic transfer systems. This paper considers RTDS stability in light of comprehensive transfer system dynamics. A transfer-function model of a servo-hydraulic transfer system is adopted and used to reflect the oversimplification of pure time-delay. The concept of gain margin is employed to reveal the drawbacks of the pure-delay based RTDS stability analyses. In order to overcome the drawbacks, a new method based on gain margin was developed. The comparative analyses demonstrate that the gain margin based method is tailored to predict the stability boundaries of a RTDS system incorporating comprehensive transfer system dynamics. The validity of the technique is verified experimentally through virtual and authentic RTDS system employing a shaking table. The performance of delay compensated shaking table RTDS is also assessed in perspective of stability.  相似文献

A bond graph approach to hybrid simulation of dynamical systems using numerical–experimental real‐time substructuring is presented. The bond graph concepts of a virtual junction and a virtual actuator, hitherto used in the context of physical‐model based control, are used to perform the substructuring in an intuitively appealing way. The approach is illustrated by the reworking of a previously‐published example. The approach is verified experimentally using a bench‐top multiple mass–spring system for the physical substructure and automatically generated real‐time code is used to implement the numerical substructure. Real‐time dynamic substructuring is an experimental technique for testing the dynamic behaviour of complex structures. It involves creating a hybrid model of the entire structure by combining an experimental test piece—the substructure—with a numerical model describing the remainder of the system. The technique is useful when it is impractical to experimentally test the entire structure or complete numerical modelling is insufficient. In this paper, we focus on the influence of delay in the system, which is generally due to the inherent dynamics of the transfer systems (actuators) used for structural testing. This naturally gives rise to a delay differential equation (DDE) model of the substructured system. With the case of a substructured system consisting of a single mass–spring oscillator we demonstrate how a DDE model can be used to understand the influence of the response delay of the actuator. Specifically, we describe a number of methods for identifying the critical time delay above which the system becomes unstable. Because of the low damping in many large structures a typical situation is that a substructuring test would operate in an unstable region if additional techniques were not implemented in practice. We demonstrate with an adaptive delay compensation technique that the substructured mass–spring oscillator system can be stabilized successfully in an experiment. The approach of DDE modelling also allows us to determine the dependence of the critical delay on the parameters of the delay compensation scheme. Using this approach we develop an over‐compensation scheme that will help ensure stable experimental testing from initiation to steady state operation. This technique is particularly suited to stiff structures or those with very low natural damping as regularly encountered in structural engineering. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Hybrid simulation combines numerical and experimental methods for cost‐effective, large‐scale testing of structures under simulated dynamic earthquake loads. Particularly for experimental seismic collapse simulation of structures, hybrid testing can be an attractive alternative to earthquake simulators due to the limited capacity of most facilities and the difficulties and risks associated with a collapsing structure on a shaking table. The benefits of hybrid simulation through collapse can be further enhanced through accurate and practical substructuring techniques that do not require testing the entire structure. An innovative substructuring technique for hybrid simulation of structures subjected to large deformations is proposed to simplify the boundary conditions by overlapping the domains between the numerical and experimental subassemblies. The advantages of this substructuring technique are the following: it requires only critical components of the structure to be tested experimentally; it reduces the number of actuators at the interface of the experimental subassemblies; and it can be implemented using typically available equipment in laboratories. Compared with previous overlapping methods that have been applied in hybrid simulation, this approach requires additional sensing in the hybrid simulation feedback loop to obtain internal member forces, but provides significantly better accuracy in the highly nonlinear range. The proposed substructuring technique is verified numerically and validated experimentally, using the response of a four‐story moment‐resisting frame that was previously tested to collapse on an earthquake simulator. In this paper we consider the concept of modelling dynamical systems using numerical–experimental substructuring. This type of modelling is applicable to large or complex systems, where some part of the system is difficult to model numerically. The substructured model is formed via the adaptive minimal control synthesis (MCS) algorithm. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that substructuring can be carried out in real time, using the MCS algorithm. Thus, we reformulate the MCS algorithm into a substructuring form. We introduce the concepts of a transfer system, and carry out numerical simulations of the substructuring process using a coupled three mass example. These simulations are compared with direct simulations of a three mass system. In addition we consider the stability of the substructuring algorithm, which we discuss in detail for a class of second‐order transfer systems. A numerical–experimental system is considered, using a small‐scale experimental system, for which the substructuring algorithm is implemented in real time. Finally we discuss these results, with particular reference to the future application of this method to modelling large‐scale structures subject to earthquake excitation. This paper presents the development and validation of a real‐time hybrid simulation (RTHS) system for efficient dynamic testing of high voltage electrical vertical‐break disconnect switches. The RTHS system consists of the computational model of the support structure, the physical model of the insulator post, a small shaking table, a state‐of‐the‐art controller, a data acquisition system and a digital signal processor. Explicit Newmark method is adopted for the numerical integration of the governing equations of motion of the hybrid structure, which consists of an insulator post (experimental substructure) and a spring‐mass‐dashpot system representing the support structure (analytical substructure). Two of the unique features of the developed RTHS system are the application of an efficient feed‐forward error compensation scheme and the ability to use integration time steps as small as 1 ms. After the development stage, proper implementation of the algorithm and robustness of the measurements used in the calculations are verified. The developed RTHS system is further validated by comparing the RTHS test results with those from a conventional shaking table test. A companion paper presents and discusses a parametric study for a variety of geometrical and material configurations of these switches using the developed RTHS system. A magnetorheological (MR) damper has been manufactured and tested and a non‐linear model is discussed. The parameters for the model are identified from an identification set of experimental data; these parameters are then used to reconstruct the force vs. displacement and the force vs. velocity hysteresis cycles of the MR damper for the hysteretic model. Then experiments are conducted on a three‐storey frame model using impact excitation, which identifies dynamic parameters of the model equipped with and without the MR damper. Natural frequencies, damping ratios and mode shapes, as well as structural properties, such as the mass, stiffness and damping matrices, are obtained. A semi‐active control method such as a variable structure controller is studied. Based on the ‘reaching law’ method, a feedback controller is presented. In order to evaluate the efficiency of the control system and the effect of earthquake ground motions, both numerical analysis and shaking table tests of the model, with and without the MR damper, have been carried out under three different ground motions: El Centro 1940, Taft 1952, and Ninghe 1976 (Tangshan Earthquake in Chinese). It is found from both the numerical analysis and the shaking table tests that the maximum accelerations and relative displacements for all floors are significantly reduced with the MR damper. A reasonable agreement between the results obtained from the numerical analysis and those from the shaking table tests is also observed. On the other hand, tests conducted at different earthquake excitations and various excitation levels demonstrate the ability of the MR damper to surpass the performance of a comparable passive system in a variety of situations. Simulating dynamic soil–structure interaction (SSI) problems is a challenge when using a shaking table because of the semi-infinity of soil foundations. This paper develops real-time dynamic hybrid testing (RTDHT) for SSI problems in order to consider the radiation damping effect of the semi-infinite soil foundation using a shaking table. Based on the substructure concept, the superstructure is physically tested and the semi-infinite foundation is numerically simulated. Thus, the response of the entire system considering the dynamic SSI is obtained by coupling the numerical calculation of the soil and the physical test of the superstructure. A two-story shear frame on a rigid foundation was first tested to verify the developed RTDHT system, in which the top story was modeled as the physical substructure and the bottom story was the numerical substructure. The RTDHT for a two-story structure mounted on soil foundation was then carried out on a shaking table while the foundation was numerically simulated using a lumped parameter model. The dynamic responses, including acceleration and shear force, were obtained under soft and hard soil conditions. The results show that the soil–structure interaction should be reasonably taken into account in the shaking table testing for structures.  相似文献

A tuned mass damper (TMD) system consists of an added mass with properly functioning spring and damping elements for providing frequency‐dependent damping in a primary structure. The advantage of a friction‐type TMD, that is, a nonlinear TMD, is its energy dissipation via a friction mechanism. In contrast, the disadvantages of a passive friction TMD (PF‐TMD) are its fixed and predetermined slip load and loss of tuning and energy dissipation capabilities when it is in a stick state. A semi‐active friction TMD (SAF‐TMD) is used to overcome these disadvantages. The SAF‐TMD can adjust its slip force in response to structure motion. To verify its feasibility, a prototype SAF‐TMD was fabricated and tested dynamically using a shaking table test. A nonsticking friction control law was used to keep the SAF‐TMD activated and in a slip state in earthquakes at varying intensities. The shaking table test results demonstrated that: (i) the experimental results are consistent with the theoretical results; (ii) the SAF‐TMD is more effective than the PF‐TMD given a similar peak TMD stroke; and (iii) the SAF‐TMD can also prevent a residual TMD stroke in a PF‐TMD system. This paper focuses on the development of a linear analytical model (even though servo‐hydraulic actuation systems are inherently non‐linear, especially for large amplitude simulations — near the performance capacity of the system — linearized models proved experimentally to be quite effective overall in capturing the salient features of shaking table dynamics) of a uni‐axial, servo‐hydraulic, stroke controlled shaking table system by using jointly structural dynamics and linear control theory. This model incorporates the proportional, integral, derivative, feed‐forward, and differential pressure gains of the control system. Furthermore, it accounts for the following physical characteristics of the system: time delay in the servovalve response, compressibility of the actuator fluid, oil leakage through the actuator seals and the dynamic properties of both the actuator reaction mass and test structure or payload. The proposed model, in the form of the total shaking table transfer function (i.e. between commanded and actual table motions), is developed to account for the specific characteristics of the Rice University shaking table. An in‐depth sensitivity study is then performed to determine the effects of the table control parameters, payload characteristics, and servovalve time delay upon the total shaking table transfer function. The sensitivity results reveal: (a) a potential strong dynamic interaction between the oil column in the actuator and the payload, and (b) the very important effect of the servovalve time delay upon the total shaking table transfer function. Real‐time hybrid testing is a very effective technique for evaluating the dynamic responses of rate‐dependent structural systems subjected to earthquake excitation. A smart base isolation system has been proposed by others using conventional low‐damping isolators and controllable damping devices such as magnetorheological (MR) dampers to achieve specified control target performance. In this paper, real‐time hybrid tests of a smart base isolation system are conducted. The simulation is for a base‐isolated two‐degrees‐of‐freedom building model where the superstructure and the low‐damping base isolator are numerically simulated, and the MR damper is physically tested. The target displacement obtained from the step‐by‐step integration of the numerical substructure is imposed on the MR damper, which is driven by three different control algorithms in real‐time. To compensate the actuator delay and improve the accuracy of the test, an adaptive phase‐lead compensator is implemented. The accuracy of each test is investigated by using the root mean square error and the tracking indicator. Experimental results demonstrate that the hybrid testing procedure using the proposed actuator compensation techniques is effective for investigating the control performance of the MR damper in a smart base isolation system. When subjected to long‐period ground motions, high‐rise buildings' upper floors undergo large responses. Furniture and nonstructural components are susceptible to significant damage in such events. This paper proposes a full‐scale substructure shaking table test to reproduce large floor responses of high‐rise buildings. The response at the top floor of a virtual 30‐story building model subjected to a synthesized long‐period ground motion is taken as a target wave for reproduction. Since a shaking table has difficulties in directly reproducing such large responses due to various capacity limitations, a rubber‐and‐mass system is proposed to amplify the table motion. To achieve an accurate reproduction of the floor responses, a control algorithm called the open‐loop inverse dynamics compensation via simulation (IDCS) algorithm is used to generate a special input wave for the shaking table. To implement the IDCS algorithm, the model matching method and the H method are adopted to construct the controller. A numerical example is presented to illustrate the open‐loop IDCS algorithm and compare the performance of different methods of controller design. A series of full‐scale substructure shaking table tests are conducted in E‐Defense to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method and examine the seismic behavior of furniture. The test results demonstrate that the rubber‐and‐mass system is capable of amplifying the table motion by a factor of about 3.5 for the maximum velocity and displacement, and the substructure shaking table test can reproduce the large floor responses for a few minutes. A series of large‐scale real‐time hybrid simulations (RTHSs) are conducted on a 0.6‐scale 3‐story steel frame building with magneto‐rheological (MR) dampers. The lateral force resisting system of the prototype building for the study consists of moment resisting frames and damped brace frames (DBFs). The experimental substructure for the RTHS is the DBF with the MR dampers, whereas the remaining structural components of the building including the moment resisting frame and gravity frames are modeled via a nonlinear analytical substructure. Performing RTHS with an experimental substructure that consists of the complete DBF enables the effects of member and connection component deformations on system and damper performance to be accurately accounted for. Data from these tests enable numerical simulation models to be calibrated, provide an understanding and validation of the in‐situ performance of MR dampers, and a means of experimentally validating performance‐based seismic design procedures for real structures. The details of the RTHS procedure are given, including the test setup, the integration algorithm, and actuator control. The results from a series of RTHS are presented that includes actuator control, damper behavior, and the structural response for different MR control laws. The use of the MR dampers is experimentally demonstrated to reduce the response of the structure to strong ground motions. Comparisons of the RTHS results are made with numerical simulations. Based on the results of the study, it is concluded that RTHS can be conducted on realistic structural systems with dampers to enable advancements in resilient earthquake resistant design to be achieved. In this paper, Rosenbrock‐based algorithms originally developed for real‐time testing of linear systems with dynamic substructuring are extended for use on nonlinear systems. With this objective in mind and for minimal overhead, both two‐ and three‐stages linearly implicit real‐time compatible algorithms were endowed with the Jacobian matrices requiring only one evaluation at the beginning of each time step. Moreover, these algorithms were improved with subcycling strategies. In detail, the paper briefly introduces Rosenbrock‐based L‐Stable Real‐Time (LSRT) algorithms together with linearly implicit and explicit structural integrators, which are now commonly used to perform real‐time tests. Then, the LSRT algorithms are analysed in terms of linearized stability with reference to an emulated spring pendulum, which was chosen as a nonlinear test problem, because it is able to exhibit a large and relatively slow nonlinear circular motion coupled to an axial motion that can be set to be stiff. The accuracy analysis on this system was performed for all the algorithms described. Following this, a coupled spring‐pendulum example typical of real‐time testing is analysed with respect to both stability and accuracy issues. Finally, the results of representative numerical simulations and real‐time substructure tests, considering nonlinearities both in the numerical and the physical substructure, are explored. These tests were used to demonstrate how the LSRT algorithms can be used for substructuring tests with strongly nonlinear components. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper presents novel predictor–corrector time‐integration algorithms based on the Generalized‐α method to perform pseudo‐dynamic tests with substructuring. The implicit Generalized‐α algorithm was implemented in a predictor–one corrector form giving rise to the implicit IPC–ρ∞ method, able to avoid expensive iterative corrections in view of high‐speed applications. Moreover, the scheme embodies a secant stiffness formula that can closely approximate the actual stiffness of a structure. Also an explicit algorithm endowed with user‐controlled dissipation properties, the EPC–ρb method, was implemented. The resulting schemes were tested experimentally both on a two‐ and on a six‐degrees‐of‐freedom system, using substructuring. The tests indicated that the numerical strategies enhance the fidelity of the pseudo‐dynamic test results even in an environment characterized by considerable experimental errors. Moreover, the schemes were tested numerically on severe non‐linear substructured multiple‐degrees‐of‐freedom systems reproduced with the Bouc–Wen model, showing the reliability of the seismic tests under these conditions. A particle tuned mass damper (PTMD), which is a creative integration of a traditional tuned mass damper and an efficient particle damper in the vibration control area, is proposed. This paper presents a comprehensive study that involves experimental, analytical, and computational approaches. The vibration control effects of a PTMD that is attached to a five‐story steel frame under seismic input are investigated by a series of shaking table tests. The influence of some parameters (auxiliary mass ratio, gap clearance, mass ratio of particles to the total auxiliary mass, frequency characteristics, and amplitude level of the input) is explored, and the performance of the PTMD with/without buffered material is compared. The experimental results show that the PTMD can achieve significant damping effects under seismic excitations, and the bandwidth of the suppression frequency is expanded, showing the device's robustness and control efficiency. In addition, an approximately analytical solution that is based on the concept of an equivalent single‐particle damper is presented, and the method to determine the corresponding system parameters is introduced. A comparative study between experimental and numerical results is conducted to verify the feasibility and accuracy of this analytical model. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
