Ten reaction vessels containing 1 m3 were used as the experimental arrangement. They were filled with coarse sand or fine gravel and installed 60 cm below the floor. The pore volume (water saturation) was 227… 260 l. Anaerobic conditions were established by the addition of 6 g glucose at storage. The reactors were given tap water with 50 and 200 mg/l NO from KNO3 in such a way that a volumetric rate of flow of 0.2, 0.4 and 0.8 l/d was created. The volumetric rates of flow corresponded to the natural recharge of groundwater, the recharge of groundwater under the conditions of irrigation and the conditions of an intensive wastewater ground treatment. In the effluent from the reaction vessels the nitrate concentration was determined every month. It was stationary from the 7th to the 55th month after the beginning of the experiment. The experiments are evaluated by means of a model which takes into account the diffusion, convection and kinetics of the nitrate degradation according to Michaelis-Menten. A simple method for solving homogeneous non-linear differential equations of the second order is proposed. The experimental and model results show a good agreement and prove the very slow nitrate degradation in the groundwater with kM = 210 mg/l, vmax = 1.5 mg/l · d or k1 = 0.005 d?1.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of sludge digester effluent as feeding solution to enrich anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) bacteria. The performance of the two parallel pilot scale‐upflow packed bed anammox reactors (UPBAn1 and UPBAn2) are examined in terms of the enrichment of anammox bacteria. The control experiment is set up conducting synthetic wastewater as feeding solution in the UPBAn1 reactor whereas, the sludge digester effluent is fed to the nitritation reactor and then the partially nitrated digester effluent to the UPBAn2 reactor. Anammox activities are evaluated by mass balances based on ammonium (NH4+), nitrite (NO2?), and nitrate (NO3?) analysis and NRR. Microbial community of anammox bacteria is analyzed using real‐time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The results demonstrate that UPBAn 1 and UPBAn2 reactors are successfully enriched on days 64 and 40 with NRRs of 19.54 and 19.43 g N m?3 per day, respectively. This study reveals that both synthetic wastewater and digester effluent are suitable for the enrichment of anammox bacteria; however, digester effluent as feeding solution for enrichment of anammox bacteria based on the ease of process control and process stability is more advisable.  相似文献

Wastewater with high ammonia concentrations is produced by many industries, e.g. in the production of fertilizer and explosives and in the agricultural and food industry. A direct discharge into rivers and lakes has to be avoided: Oxidation of ammonia requires 4.56 g DO/g NH+4-N and results in a decrease of dissolved oxygen concentration. Moreover, nitrate stimulates the proliferation of algae, with regard to the eutrophication of natural waters. For municipal wastewater with an ammonia concentration less than 50 mg/L NH+4-N nitrification is a standard process. However, the removal of higher loaded industrial effluents still poses many questions. Recently, lab-scale and pilot-scale investigations show remarkable advances in the increase in nitrification efficiency and in the stabilization of the process. But because of changing flowrates and concentrations, the aid of advanced control algorithms is necessary. Some of the most important variables of biochemical reactors can be determined only with difficulty, at times only with off-line measurements. Model-aided measurement approaches try to determine these variables indirectly from easily measured variables. An experimentally-proved reactor model is required. Therefore, a dynamic model of nitrification in ideally mixed reactors is proposed based on mass balances for the components ammonia. nitrite, nitrate. dissolved oxygen DO, carbon dioxide, pH. nitrosomonas and nitrobacter. The biological reaction rates consider oxygen limitation and substrate inhibition. The process model presented is tested by lab scale experiments using an aerated stirred tank reactor and a fluidized bed reactor. Conformity between the predictions of the model and the observed data was positive. It has been shown that the nitrite oxidation by nitrobacter is the most sensible step in nitrification.  相似文献

The effects of plant species richness (SR; i.e., 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16 species per plot) on substrate nitrate and ammonium retention and ecosystem productivity in a full‐scale constructed wetland (CW) with high nitrogen (N) input were studied. Substrate nitrate (0.1–16.4 mg kg?1) and ammonium concentrations (1.3–9.2 mg kg?1) in this study were higher than those in other comparable biodiversity experiments. Substrate nitrate concentration significantly increased while ammonium concentration significantly decreased with the increase of plant SR (p = 0.008 and 0.040, respectively). The response of ecosystem productivity to increasing SR was unimodal with four species per plot achieving the greatest productivity. Transgressive overyielding, which was compared to the most productive of corresponding monocultures, did not occur in most polycultures. We conclude that substrate N retention was enhanced by plant SR even with high N input, and plant SR could be managed to improve the efficiency of N removals in CWs for wastewater treatment.  相似文献

In a storage reservoir with a hypolimnic volume of 3.5 hm3 the water contains 40 mg/l nitrate. A straw bale of 60 by 20 by 1.5 m was introduced as a reactor. Hypolimnic water having been polluted with a waste product of the fatty acid synthesis (30 … 20% formic, acetic, propionic, butyric and valeric acids) were pumped through it. By the use of a total of 43.8 t fatty acid mixture from June to August an additional oxygen depletion of 14 t O2 is achieved and 49 t NO3? are removed at the same time. The ammonium concentration did not increase, the NO2? concentration, however, rose to 12 … 13 mg/l NO2 at times. The fatty acids were used up save 0.1 mg/l. The increase of the NO2? concentration, of the number of germs and of the iron, manganese and phosphorus back solution due to the controlled anaerobic conditions is the drawback of the process.  相似文献

Bezafibrate (BZF), a widely used lipid regulator, is a potential threat to ecosystems and human health in water, and the recent research showed that advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are much more effective for BZF degradation. In this study, we investigated the photochemical decomposition of BZF in surface water and effluent from waste water treatment plants (WWTP) by UV/H2O2 process. The results showed that the UV/H2O2 process was a promising method to remove BZF at low concentration, generally at µg L?1 level. When initial concentrations reach 100 µg L?1 in the deionized water, >99.8% of BZF could be removed in 16 min under UV intensity of 61.4 µm cm?2, at the H2O2 concentration of 0.1 mg L?1, and neutral pH condition. Moreover, BZF degradation was inhibited in this process when humic acid (HA) and inorganic solution anions were added to the deionized water solutions, including chloride, nitrate, bicarbonate, and sulfate, significantly. In the surface water and effluent of WWTP, however, the removal efficiency of BZF was lower than that in the deionized water because of the interference of complex constituents in the surface water and effluent. Some main intermediates at the m/z range of 100–400 were observed by high performance LC‐MS (HPLC/MS) and a simple pathway of BZF degradation by UV/H2O2 was proposed.  相似文献

Biological Degradation of 2,4-Dinitrotoluene in a Continuous Bioreactor and Kinetic Studies Experimental results on the aerobic biological degradation with complete mineralization of 2,4-dinitrotoluene (2,4-DNT) are presented. A culture of Pseudomonas sp. DNT from Spain and Nishino was used. The degradation was examined with batch cultures for the determination of kinetic and stoichiometric coefficients. Further experiments were carried out with a continuous culture in a fixed-bed reactor with recirculation in order to obtain high degradation rates. The reactor was packed with ceramic Raschig rings (55 mL) and had a liquid reaction volume of 160 mL. The minimal salt media from Spanggord et al. with and without (NH4)2S)4 as nitrogen source was used as substrate. 2,4-DNT was the sole source of carbon and energy. From batch experiments a yield coefficient YB/S = (0.30 ± 0.05) g g?1 was calculated from a mass balance of the elements. This result was confirmed by calculations using literature data. Fitting the experimental data to the Monod equation, μmax = 0.1 h?1 and KS = 0.01…0.03 mmol L?1 were obtained. It was demonstrated by batch experiments that 2,4-DNT is not only used as the source of carbon and energy but also as the nitrogen source. In the fixed-bed reactor, a degradation of 92…97% was reached with a maximal 2,4-DNT load of 95 mg L?1 h?1. The rate of continuous degradation could be described by a pseudo-first-order reaction (k = 9.73 h?1). The complete mineralization of 2,4-DNT was verified by the measurement of DOC and the formed nitrite and nitrate. The formed nitrite was nitrified simultaneously. It was demonstrated by these experiments that large scale biological treatment of industrial effluent containing 2,4-DNT may be successful.  相似文献

The effect of preferential flow in soil pipes on nitrate retention in riparian zones is poorly understood. The characteristics of soil pipes and their influence on patterns of groundwater transport and nitrate dynamics were studied along four transects in a 1‐ to >3‐m deep layer of peat and marl overlying an oxic sand aquifer in a riparian zone in southern Ontario, Canada. The peat‐marl deposit, which consisted of several horizontal layers with large differences in bulk density, contained soil pipes that were generally 0.1 to 0.2 m in diameter and often extended vertically for 1 to >2 m. Springs that produced overland flow across the riparian area occurred at some sites where pipes extended to the peat surface. Concentrations of NO3?–N (20–30 mg L?1) and dissolved oxygen (DO) (4–6 mg L?1) observed in peat pipe systems and surface springs were similar to values in the underlying sand aquifer, indicating that preferential flow transported groundwater with limited nitrate depletion. Low NO3?–N concentrations of <5 mg L?1 and enriched δ15N values indicated that denitrification was restricted to small areas of the peat where pipes were absent. Groundwater DO concentrations declined rapidly to <2 mg L?1 in the peat matrix adjacent to pipes, whereas high NO3?–N concentrations of >15 mg L?1 extended over a larger zone. Low dissolved organic carbon values at these locations suggest that supplies of organic carbon were not sufficient to support high rates of denitrification, despite low DO conditions. These data indicate that it is important to develop a greater understanding of pipes in peat deposits, which function as sites where the transport of large fluxes of water with low biogeochemical reaction rates can limit the nitrate removal capacity of riparian zones. The effluent from biological treatment plants of cane sugar factories undergoes a final purification in laboratory models with a Chlorella culture at volume loads of 76… 325 mg/l. d BOD5 or 121… 555 mg/l-d COD. The coefficient of removal on the basis of BOD5 is found to be linearly negatively correlated with the retention time, but independent of the substrate concentration and composition as well as of the pre-treatment of the wastewaters (aerobic or anaerobic). A dimensioning on the basis of the COD is not possible because of the high phytoplankton content in the effluent of the ponds.  相似文献

Over an oceanic peatland, the concentration of Na in fog averaged 38.1 mgl?1 compared with 1.8 mgl?1 in rain, resulting in a significant flux of mineral elements to the surface. Between 16 May and 20 June 1990 the average mass flux of Na to the bog surface by fog, rain, and dry deposition was 21.9, 10.4 and 7.0 mg m?2 d?1. There was little long-term storage of Na within the peatland system, where Na losses measured in stream runoff averaged 34.8 mg m2 d?1, and deep groundwater losses 4 mg m?2 d?1. Calcium and Mg were preferentially retained in the organic soil, whereas K was relatively mobile. Potassium tended to become concentrated in the unsaturated zone. Stream runoff had a consistently higher pH than groundwater, corresponding to higher Ca and Mg concentrations, which may have been from mineral sources in the headwater ponds. Otherwise, the stream water chemistry was closely related to groundwater in the upper layers of the peat deposit.  相似文献

Danube river water samples were saturated with mineral oil, and then the primary production (gross) was determined by means of the light-dark bottle method (oxygen) in situ at depths of 0.1… 1.5 m in comparison with untreated samples. Samples were exposed for half a solar day alternately during the first and second half-days. Investigations carried out between March and October for periods of 14 days showed a mean production of 2.56 g · m?2d?1 O2, which was reduced by 36% due to 12.6 mg/l hydrocarbons. Production decreases with the water depth from 6.2 to 0.9 mg · l?1d?1 02, whereas the inhibition by hydrocarbons increases from 31 to 41%.  相似文献

A demonstration plant for biological heterotrophic water treatment of nitrate polluted groundwater has been operated in Coswig near Dresden since 1989. In this NEBIO tube reactor process the denitrification is achieved in a downstream fluidized bed with continuous regeneration of sintered polystyrene particles as inert carrier material. A nutrient consisting of ethanol and phosphate is dosed in the reactor influent. In the subsequent treatment stages the denitrified water is aerated, filtered through a multilayer and GAC filter, and is finally disinfected with chlorine gas. The influence of changing raw water quality (oxygen content, pH value) on the process performance was examined. Increasing oxygen concentration lowers the nitrate reduction potential and rises the consumptive ratio ΔC/ΔNO3. The technology shows a high removal performance of 270 g NO3 m?3 h?1 in the range of pH 6.2 to pH 7.3 which is typical for natural groundwaters. The degradation of nitrate is increasingly inhibited for pH values beyond 7.6. Nitrite production occurs significantly in high pH ranges. The results lead to further insight in the stoichiometry of heterotrophic denitrification. By expressing the stoichiometric equations for nitrate and oxygen respiration as functions of oxygen and pH value it could be shown that the influent water quality has strong effects on the consumption of ethanol. A kinetic model was developed to predict the reactor performance under changing raw water conditions. A two stage kinetic model was designed, regarding two main effects: biochemical degradation of oxygen, nitrate and ethanol and distribution of active biomass due to hydraulic properties of the tube reactor. This model may be helpful for reactor design for sites of various ground water qualities.  相似文献

In this study, the effect of sludge retention time on ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) in an anaerobic/oxic (AO) process, was explored. The results indicated that the growth rate constants of AOB were 0.97, 0.88, and 0.79 d–1, respectively, meanwhile, those of NOB were 1.22, 1.03, and 0.93 d–1, respectively, when the sludge retention time (SRT) was 15 days, 10 days and 5 days. The relation between the growth rate constant and the SRT could be best described using a simple exponential curve and a second type hyperbolic curve. The lysis rate constants for AOB and NOB were 0.13 and 0.18 d–1, respectively. The yield coefficients values of AOB and NOB were 0.22 and 0.21, respectively. The percentage of AOB to mixed liquid suspended solids (MLSS) was 0.64%, 0.53%, and 0.35%, respectively. Meanwhile, the percentage of NOB was 2.24%, 1.87%, and 1.11%, respectively, at SRT values of 15 days, 10 days and 5 days. When the SRT value decreased, the AOB and NOB biomass levels decreased by 12.75 and 47.01 mg L–1, respectively. Meanwhile the removal efficiency of NH4+‐N decreased from 90 to 26%, while the removal efficiency of total nitrogen (TN) decreased from 14 to 8%.  相似文献

The oxidative conversion of strongly alkaline sulphide concentrations in wastewaters from the wet molybdenite enrichment is successfully performed within a relatively short time by the application of atmospheric oxygen, “Winkler adsorbent” (activated form of ash from Winkler generators) or “Winkler generator ash” and chlorinated lime at the same time. The reaction times were 60… 90 min at residual sulphide concentrations of 1… 10 mg/l. The initial concentrations of sulphide were between 400 and 1,200 mg/l. It was proved by comparative investigations that the “Winkler absorbent” or the “Winkler generator ash” have a catalytical effect during the oxidation by air. Therefore, also, e.g., at an initial concentration of sulphide of 600 mg/l only 4 g/l chlorinated lime were required, which corresponded to only about 0.13 times the stoichiometrically calculated quantity with the available chlorine content being taken into account. Flotation cells are suitable as reactors.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments were carried out to the influence of different concentrations of copper in feeding and respiratory rates, fecundity and longevity of the marine planktonic copepod Acartia clausi, taken from a polluted and a clean area of the Saronic gulf (Greece). In the range of copper concentrations 0.001 to 0.01 mg l.?1, all tested activities of the animals coming from the clean region seem affected. Feeding acitity, longevity and fecundity showed a progressive reduction from 0.001 to 0.01 mg l.?1 On the other hand oxygen consumption rates showed a continuous increase at the same range of concentrations. The pollution-adapted population of Acartia seems more resistant to sub-lethal copper stress. Although longevity and respiration were affected in all concentrations used (the reaction was of the same kind as for the animals from the clean region), ingestion rate was not affected at 0.001 mg l.?1 decreasing at higher concentrations. The fecundity of the pollution-adapted population is higher than that of the clean area, shows a slight increase at 0.001 and 0.0025 mg l.?1 dropping about to the control animals fecundity level at 0.01 mg l.?1  相似文献

The effects of short-term exposure to tetravalent platinum on survival, opercular movement and post-treatment growth of coho salmon fry (Oncorhynchus kisutch) was investigated. Employing a static water acute toxicity bioassay with platinum as PtCl42HCl·6 H2O, at 8.5±0.2°C, and a water hardness of 55.9±3.5 mg l.?1 (as CaCo3), the 24, 48, and 96-h LC50 values were 15.5, 5.2, and 2.5 mg Pt4+ l.?1 respectively.Rates of opercular movement for fish exposed to platinum increased with increasing concentrations to a level of 1.0 mg l.?1. No further significant increases were evident above this level. Hypoactivity of fish exposed to 0.3 mg l.?1 and higher was evident during the acute toxicity bioassay and much of the post-treatment study. Post-treatment rate of growth for fish exposed to sublethal concentration of platinum for 96 h was less than that of the controls. All organs examined histopathologically were within normal ranges with the exception of the gills and olfactory organ. Lesions in fish exposed to concentration of 0.3 mg l.?1 and higher were characterized by branchial epithelial hypertrophy and hyperplasia, and necrosis of olfactory epithelial cells.  相似文献

Groundwater denitrification was carried out in a fluidized bed reactor. This type of reactor is suited well to conditions of low substrate concentrations and high flow rates which are typical in groundwater denitrification processes. The reactor is characterized by the efficient contact between biomass and substrate, a high biomass concentration, and the absence of clogging or channeling. These characteristics provide for high treatment capacities (10.8 g/(L·d) NO3?N) and short retention times (less than 3 minutes) resulting in small reactor volume. Start-up procedure, biomass and nitrate profiles, and biofilm characteristics are presented in this article.  相似文献

The hyporheic zone of riverbed sediments has the potential to attenuate nitrate from upwelling, polluted groundwater. However, the coarse‐scale (5–10 cm) measurement of nitrogen biogeochemistry in the hyporheic zone can often mask fine‐scale (<1 cm) biogeochemical patterns, especially in near‐surface sediments, leading to incomplete or inaccurate representation of the capacity of the hyporheic zone to transform upwelling NO3?. In this study, we utilised diffusive equilibrium in thin‐films samplers to capture high resolution (cm‐scale) vertical concentration profiles of NO3?, SO42?, Fe and Mn in the upper 15 cm of armoured and permeable riverbed sediments. The goal was to test whether nitrate attenuation was occurring in a sub‐reach characterised by strong vertical (upwelling) water fluxes. The vertical concentration profiles obtained from diffusive equilibrium in thin‐films samplers indicate considerable cm‐scale variability in NO3? (4.4 ± 2.9 mg N/L), SO42? (9.9 ± 3.1 mg/l) and dissolved Fe (1.6 ± 2.1 mg/l) and Mn (0.2 ± 0.2 mg/l). However, the overall trend suggests the absence of substantial net chemical transformations and surface‐subsurface water mixing in the shallow sediments of our sub‐reach under baseflow conditions. The significance of this is that upwelling NO3?‐rich groundwater does not appear to be attenuated in the riverbed sediments at <15 cm depth as might occur where hyporheic exchange flows deliver organic matter to the sediments for metabolic processes. It would appear that the chemical patterns observed in the shallow sediments of our sub‐reach are not controlled exclusively by redox processes and/or hyporheic exchange flows. Deeper‐seated groundwater fluxes and hydro‐stratigraphy may be additional important drivers of chemical patterns in the shallow sediments of our study sub‐reach. © 2015 The Authors. Transport and losses of nitrate from sloped soils are closely linked to nitrogen fertilizer management. Previous studies have always focused on different types of fertilizer applications and rarely analysed various initial nitrate distributions as a result of nitrogen fertilizer applications. Under certain conditions, both subsurface lateral saturated flow and vertical leaching dominate nitrate losses. Soil tank experiments and HYDRUS‐2D modelling were used to better understand the subsurface nitrate transport and losses through lateral saturated flow and vertical leaching under various initial nitrate distributions. Low (L: 180 mg L?1), normal (N: 350 mg L?1), and high (H: 500 mg L?1) nitrate concentrations were used in five different distributions (NNNN, NLLN, LHHL, LNLN, and HNHN) along the slope of the tank. The first two treatments (NNNN and NLLN) were analysed both experimentally and numerically. Experiments were conducted under 12 rainfall events at intervals of 3 days. The HYDRUS‐2D model was calibrated and validated against the experimental data and demonstrated good model performance. The other three treatments (LHHL, LNLN, and HNHN) were investigated using the calibrated model. Nitrate concentrations in purple sloped soils declined exponentially with time under intermittent rainfalls, predominantly in the upper soil layers. Non‐uniform initial nitrate distributions contributed to larger differences between four locations along the slope in deeper soil layers. The non‐uniform nitrate distribution either enhanced or reduced decreases in nitrate concentrations in areas with higher or lower initial nitrate concentrations, respectively. Higher nitrate concentrations at the slope foot and along the slope were reduced mainly by lateral flow and vertical leaching, respectively. Increasing nitrogen application rates increased subsurface nitrate losses. Mean subsurface lateral nitrate fluxes were twice as large as mean vertical leaching nitrate fluxes. However, due to longer leaching durations, total nitrate losses due to vertical leaching were comparable with those due to lateral flow, which indicated comparable environmental risks to surface waters and groundwater.  相似文献

A three-layer Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model (9:12:1) for the prediction of Chemical Oxygen Demand Removal Efficiency (CODRE) of Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) reactors treating real cotton textile wastewater diluted with domestic wastewater was presented. To validate the proposed method, an experimental study was carried out in three lab-scale UASB reactors to investigate the treatment efficiency on total COD reduction. The reactors were operated for 80 days at mesophilic conditions (36–37.5°C) in a temperature-controlled water bath with two hydraulic retention times (HRT) of 4.5 and 9.0 days and with organic loading rates (OLR) between 0.072 and 0.602 kg COD/m3/day. Five different dilution ratios of 15, 30, 40, 45 and 60% with domestic wastewater were employed to represent seasonal fluctuations, respectively. The study was undertaken in a pH range of 6.20–8.06 and an alkalinity range of 1,350–1,855 mg/l CaCO3. The concentrations of volatile fatty acids (VFA) and total suspended solids (TSS) were observed between 420 and 720 mg/l CH3COOH and 68–338 mg/l, respectively. In the study, a wide range of influent COD concentrations (CODi) between 651 and 4,044 mg/l in feeding was carried out. CODRE of UASB reactors being output parameter of the conducted anaerobic treatment was estimated by nine input parameters such as HRT, pH, CODi concentration, operating temperature, alkalinity, VFA concentration, dilution ratio (DR), OLR, and TSS concentration. After backpropagation (BP) training combined with principal component analysis (PCA), the ANN model predicted CODRE values based on experimental data and all the predictions were proven to be satisfactory with a correlation coefficient of about 0.8245. In the ANN study, the Levenberg-Marquardt Algorithm (LMA) was found as the best of 11 BP algorithms. In addition to determination of the optimal ANN structure, a linear-nonlinear study was also employed to investigate the effects of input variables on CODRE values in this study. Both ANN outputs and linear-nonlinear study results were compared and advantages and further developments were evaluated.  相似文献
