An improvement is suggested to the direct displacement‐based design (DDBD) procedure for bridges to account for higher mode effects, the key idea being not only the proper prediction of a target‐displacement profile through the effective mode shape method (wherein all significant modes are considered), but also the proper definition of the corresponding peak structural response. The proposed methodology is then applied to an actual concrete bridge wherein the different pier heights and the unrestrained transverse displacement at the abutments result in an increased contribution of the second mode. A comparison between the extended and the ‘standard’ DDBD is conducted, while further issues such as the proper consideration of the degree of fixity at the pier's top and the effect of the deck's torsional stiffness are also investigated. The proposed methodology and resulting designs are evaluated using nonlinear response‐history analysis for a number of spectrum‐compatible motions. Unlike the ‘standard’ DDBD, the extended procedure adequately reproduced the target‐displacement profile providing at the same time a good estimate of results regarding additional design quantities such as yield displacements, displacement ductilities, etc., closely matching the results of the more rigorous nonlinear response‐history analysis. However, the need for additional iterations clearly indicates that practical application of the proposed procedure is feasible only if it is fully ‘automated’, that is, implemented in a software package. Self-centering buckling-restrained braces (SCBRBs) were proposed recently to minimize residual deformation of the braces induced by yielding or buckling. Although earthquake resilience of structures equipped with the SCBRBs can be well achieved using displacement based designs (DBDs), previously proposed DBD procedures generally involve iterations. In this study, a novel direct displacement-based design method with a non-iterative procedure, named RCR DDBD, is proposed and applied to design of steel braced frame structures with SCBRBs. Unlike previously adopted DBD, the yield displacement does not need to be assumed initially in the proposed procedure. Instead, the yield strength and yield displacement are determined directly by the predetermined objective drift (ratio), using the relation of the strength reduction factor (R) and constant-strength inelastic displacement ratio spectra (CR spectra), i.e. the RCR relation. Since the derived RCR relation is independent with the peak ground acceleration of the earthquake records when stiffness and strength degradation are not considered, the proposed procedure can be accurate for any seismic level. The RCR DDBD is supposed to begin with the knowledge of the seismic excitation level (according to the structure category, site classification and owner’s requirements) and the corresponding target drift; the end of the design is to obtain the cross sections of main frame members and all the bracing parameters. The result of two 7-story buildings designed according to the RCR DDBD procedure demonstrates that this procedure can be effective and fairly simple for practical seismic design.  相似文献

The paper investigates the applicability of current direct displacement based seismic design (DDBD) procedure, developed by Priestley and his coworkers, for straight long span bridges under transverse seismic excitation synchronous to all supports. This category of bridges often possess some additional features such as massive tall piers, highly irregular distribution of mass and stiffness due to unequal superstructure spans and pier heights, large deformation capacity etc. that are absent in short-to-moderate span bridges for which DDBD has extensively been verified. It is shown that DDBD in its current form is unable to capture both displacement and base shear demand when compared with nonlinear dynamic analysis results. Accordingly, a simple mechanics based extension of the current procedure that takes into account the effect of pier mass while computing base shear demand as well as a modal combination rule for estimating displacement demand is proposed and validated using a series of parametric studies. The new procedure also allows engineer to allocate strength at the potential plastic hinge location in more general terms.  相似文献

直接基于位移法进行抗震设计时,最初结构的刚度和承载力均是未知的,设计中需假定预期设计结构的振型模式和由此得到的结构侧向地震力分布,这样的设计结果会产生一定的偏差.针对此问题,提出了改进直接基于位移的抗震设计方法,即首先初步设计结构,根据初设结构的振型模式等效单自由度体系,结合目标位移反向设计结构刚度,将设计结构的刚度与初设结构刚度比较,进行调整设计,最后进行承载力设计.程序中为减少迭代次数,定义了结构竖向刚度调整系数,用以简化结构弹性刚度的确定过程,从而实现设计结构在相应地震设防水准下满足预期位移的控制要求.最后通过算例证明了该方法具有一定的准确性.  相似文献

K形高强钢组合偏心支撑(K-HSS-EBF)是指耗能连梁和支撑采用Q345钢,而框架梁、框架柱采用高强度钢(如Q460)。为研究其在罕遇地震作用下的抗震性能,在试验研究的基础上,采用直接基于位移的抗震设计方法设计了5层、8层和12层算例,分别进行静力推覆分析和动力弹塑性分析,研究高强钢组合偏心支撑钢框架在罕遇地震作用下层间侧移分布和破坏模式。研究结果表明:直接基于位移的抗震设计方法设计的算例在罕遇地震作用下,结构的层间侧移满足我国现行抗震规范的要求,结构呈理想的渐进式梁铰屈服机构,并证明该设计方法的合理性和可靠性。  相似文献

The application of some design and assessment approaches, such as the direct displacement-based design (DDBD) and the capacity spectrum methods, requires the modification of elastic design spectra by some displacement reduction factor, to account for the appropriate energy dissipation capacity of different structures. While several equations to correlate dissipation and hysteresis cycles are available, once the displacement reduction factor has been obtained, the correction of the spectra is operated reducing the displacement demand accordingly and conserving the period of vibration at each point. This procedure is here discussed and proved to be conceptually inappropriate, because the spectral acceleration rather than the period should be kept at each point. The application of this alternative procedure may result in increased shear strength demand in design and in larger required displacement capacity for the same level of strength in assessment, if all other factors are not modified. However, the calibration of the reduction factors applied in DDBD has been extensive, and the method has proved to be effective in predicting displacement demands consistent with those resulting from refined nonlinear time history analysis; therefore, a possible introduction of the proposed correction will require equally extensive studies and possibly compensating corrections in the calculation of the equivalent damping. On the contrary, an appropriate calibration of the factors to be used in the application of the “capacity spectrum” method is still being developed, and the consideration of a constant acceleration may facilitate the derivation of effective equations.  相似文献

A procedure for displacement‐based seismic design (DBD) of reinforced concrete buildings is described and applied to a 4‐storey test structure. The essential elements of the design procedure are: (a) proportioning of members for gravity loads; (b) estimation of peak inelastic member deformation demands in the so‐designed structure due to the design (‘life‐safety’) earthquake; (c) revision of reinforcement and final detailing of members to meet these inelastic deformation demands; (d) capacity design of members and joints in shear. Additional but non‐essential steps between (a) and (b) are: (i) proportioning of members for the ULS against lateral loads, such as wind or a serviceability (‘immediate occupancy’) earthquake; and (ii) capacity design of columns in flexure at joints. Inelastic deformation demands in step (b) are estimated from an elastic analysis using secant‐to‐yield member stiffnesses. Empirical expressions for the deformation capacity of RC elements are used for the final proportioning of elements to meet the inelastic deformation demands. The procedure is applied to one side of a 4‐storey test structure that includes a coupled wall and a two‐bay frame. The other side is designed and detailed according to Eurocode 8. Major differences result in the reinforcement of the two sides, with significant savings on the DBD‐side. This paper presents a direct displacement-based design procedure for seismic retrofit of existing buildings using nonlinear viscous dampers according to equivalent linear systems. Unlike conventional methods, the equivalent linear viscous damping provided by the nonlinear viscous dampers is derived based on the assumption that the average energy dissipated between the linear and the nonlinear viscous dampers is equal. Also, the equivalent period and viscous damping for the equivalent linear systems which are used for representing the behavior of bare frames (the buildings without dampers) are derived from the concept of average storage energy and average dissipated energy, respectively. It is shown from nonlinear time-history analyses that the nonlinear action of the retrofitted structures can be reasonably captured by the presented direct displacement-based procedure.  相似文献

Performance-based seismic design(PBSD) aims to assess structures at different damage states. Since damage can be directly associated to displacements, seismic design with consideration of displacement seems to be logical. In this study, simple formulae to estimate the peak floor displacement patterns of eccentrically braced frames(EBFs) at different performance levels subjected to earthquake ground motions are proposed. These formulae are applicable in a PBSD and especially in direct displacement-based design(DDBD). Parametric study is conducted on a group of 30 EBFs under a set of 15 far field and near field accelerograms which they scaled to different amplitudes to adapt various performance levels. The results of thousands of nonlinear dynamic analyses of EBFs have been post-processed by nonlinear regression analysis in order to recognize the major parameters that influence the peak displacement pattern of these frames. Results show that suggested displacement patterns have relatively good agreement with those acquired by an exact nonlinear dynamic analysis.  相似文献

A Displacement-Based Design (DBD) procedure for bridges equipped with different seismic Isolation Systems (IS’s) is proposed. It has been derived from the Direct DBD method recently developed by Priestley and co-workers. The key aspect of the proposed procedure is the definition of a uniform target displacement of the deck, which is assigned by the designer to accomplish a given performance level, expressed through limit values of the maximum IS displacement and of the pier drift, respectively. The proposed design procedure has been developed for four different idealized force-displacement cyclic behaviours of IS’s, which can be used to describe the response of a wide variety of IS’s, including: (i) Lead-Rubber Bearings (LRB), (ii) High-Damping Rubber Bearings (HDRB), (iii) Friction Pendulum Bearings (FPB), (iv) Combinations of either Low-Damping Rubber Bearings (LDRB) or FPB and Viscous Dampers (VD), (v) Combinations of lubricated Flat Sliding Bearings (FSB) and LDRB, (vi) Combinations of FSB and Steel Yielding Devices (SYD), (vii) Combinations of FSB, Shape Memory Alloy (SMA)-based Re-centring Devices and VD. In the paper, the background and implementation of the design procedure is presented first, then some validation studies through nonlinear time-history analyses on different configurations of continuous deck and multi-span simply supported deck bridges are illustrated.  相似文献

This paper details a direct displacement-based design procedure for steel eccentrically braced frame (EBF) structures and gauges its performance by examining the non-linear dynamic response of a series of case study EBF structures designed using the procedure. Analytical expressions are developed for the storey drift at yield and for the storey drift capacity of EBFs, recognising that in addition to link beam deformations, the brace and column axial deformations can provide important contributions to storey drift components. Case study design results indicate that the ductility capacity of EBF systems will tend to be relatively low, despite the large local ductility capacity offered by well detailed links. In addition, it is found that while the ductility capacity of EBF systems will tend to reduce with height, this is not necessarily negative for seismic performance since the displacement capacity for taller EBF systems will tend to be large. To gauge the performance of the proposed DBD methodology, analytical models of the case study design solutions are subject to non-linear time-history analyses with a set of spectrum-compatible accelerograms. The average displacements and drifts obtained from the NLTH analyses are shown to align well with design values, confirming that the new methodology could provide an effective tool for the seismic design of EBF systems.  相似文献

In Italy, as in other high seismic risk countries, many bridges, nowadays deemed ‘strategic’ for civil protection interventions after an earthquake, were built without antiseismic criteria, and therefore their seismic assessment is mandatory. Accordingly, the development of a seismic assessment procedure that gives reliable results and, at the same time, is sufficiently simple to be applied on a large population of bridges in a short time is very useful. In this paper, a displacement‐based procedure for the assessment of multi‐span RC bridges, satisfying these requirements and called direct displacement‐based assessment (DDBA), is proposed. Based on the direct displacement‐based design previously developed by Priestley et al., DDBA idealizes the multi DOF bridge structure as an equivalent SDOF system and hence defines a safety factor in terms of displacement. DDBA was applied to hypothetical bridge configurations. The same structures were analyzed also using standard force‐based approach. The selection of representative input ground motions (IGMs) is important for a proper nonlinear response time history analysis (NLRHA) of modern structures. The prevailing IGM selection procedure requires that the response spectra of selected ground motions are matched with the code-specified design spectra, while the effect of the frequency contents combination in the time domain on the multimode interactions is not considered. Ignoring the effect of the frequency contents combination in the time domain of IGMs may cause significant variations in the analysis results for selected IGMs, although they are matched to the same design spectrum. In this paper, a modal-based ground motion selection (MGMS) procedure is proposed as a supplement to spectrum matching-based IGM selection procedures for selecting proper IGMs that can sufficiently induce the multimode interactions. In the proposed procedure, three equivalent single-degree-of-freedom (ESDOF) systems are developed by pushover analysis. NLRHA is then conducted for these ESDOF systems with a set of 20 seed IGMs chosen by the spectrum-matching–based selection procedure. Finally, seven IGMs are selected from the seed IGMs for NLRHA in the full structural model. To verify MGMS, seismic demands of high-rise buildings were computed by NLRHA with seven MGMS-selected IGMs, seven IGMs with closest spectrum matching, and groups of seven randomly selected IGMs derived from three different sets of 20 seed IGMs. The computed seismic demands with MGMS-IGMs show very good agreement with the mean demands determined using the whole set of seed IGMs, while the deviation is much lesser compared with those groups of randomly selected IGMs.  相似文献

Most current methods of design for concrete structures under earthquake loads rely on highly idealized ‘equivalent’ static representations of the seismic loads and linear‐elastic methods of structural analysis. With the continuing development of non‐linear methods of dynamic analysis for the overload behaviour and collapse of complete concrete structures, a more direct and more accurate design procedure becomes possible which considers conditions at system collapse. This paper describes an evaluation procedure that uses non‐linear dynamic collapse–load analysis together with global safety coefficients. A back‐calibration procedure for evaluating the global safety coefficients is also described. The aim of this paper is to open up discussion of alternative methods of design with improved accuracy which are necessary to move towards a direct collapse–load method of design. Displacement response spectrum (DRS), as the input, is of great significance to the displacement-based design just like the acceleration response spectrum to the traditional force-based design. Although the procedure of performance-based, in particular the displacement-based design has achieved considerable development, there is not a general DRS covering an enough long period range for common seismic design yet. This paper develops a systematic ground motion data processing procedure for the purpose of correcting the noise in the earthquake records and generating consistent DRS for seismic design. An adaptive algorithm is proposed to determine the cutoff frequency of the high-pass digital filter. The DRS of more than 500 recorded earthquake ground motions are generated and they are classified into three groups according to the ratio of the peak ground acceleration to the peak ground velocity (A/V) and/or the ratio of the peak ground velocity to the peak ground displacement (V/D). In each group, all the ground motions are normalized with respect to a selected scaling factor. Their corresponding DRS are obtained and then averaged to get the mean and standard deviation DRS, which can be used for both deterministic and probabilistic displacement-based design.  相似文献

The concept of displacement-based design is attractive for seismic design, primarily because it places the focus of design directly on displacement demand, and hence damage, rather than on force-reduction or behaviour factors. A procedure is presented which extends the simple concept of displacement-based design to complex multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) bridge structures. The procedure is based on the assumption of a displaced shape for the structure, and the subsequent reduction of the system to an equivalent single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) system. The process is shown to work well for the design of a symmetrical bridge, while suffering some shortcomings when applied to a highly irregular bridge. The topic of design-oriented displacement response spectra is also briefly addressed.  相似文献

A displacement-based design (DBD) procedure aiming to proportion hysteretic damped braces (HYDBs) in order to attain, for a specific level of seismic intensity, a designated performance level of a structure is proposed for the retrofitting of framed buildings. A key step for the reliability of the DBD procedure is the selection of the equivalent viscous damping in order to account for the energy dissipated by the damped braced frame. In this paper, expressions of the equivalent damping are obtained considering the energy dissipated by the HYDBs and the framed structure. To this end, dynamic analyses of an equivalent single degree of freedom system, whose response is idealized by a trilinear model, are carried out considering real accelerograms matching, on the average, Eurocode 8 (EC8) response spectrum for a medium subsoil class. Then, a three-storey reinforced concrete (r.c.) framed structure of a school building, designed in a medium-risk seismic region according to the Italian code in force in 1975, is supposed as retrofitted as if in a high-risk seismic region of the current seismic code (NTC08) by the insertion of HYDBs. Nonlinear static analyses are carried out to evaluate the vulnerability of the primary structure, characterized by the lack of interior girders along the floor slab direction, and to select optimal properties of the HYDBs. The effectiveness of the retrofitting solutions is checked referring to nonlinear dynamic analyses, considering artificially generated accelerograms whose response spectra match those adopted by NTC08 for the earthquake design levels corresponding to the serviceability and ultimate limit states.  相似文献
