The ferromagnetism of irons, stony-irons, E-, H-, L- and LL-chondrites and achondrites is due to a metallic phase comprising mostly Fe and Ni and small amounts of Co and P. The ferromagnetic constituent in non-metamorphosed C-chondrites is magnetite, but some metamorphosed C-chondrites contain FeNi metallic grains too.

Among the stony meteorites, the content of metals as determined by their saturation magnetization (IS) sharply decreases in the order E → H → L → LL → achondrites, whereas the IS value for magnetite and additional metals in C-chondrites ranges from the IS value of achondrites to that of L-chondrites.

With an increase of Ni-content in the metallic phase in chondrites of the order E → H → L → LL → C, the relative amount of Ni-poor kamacite magnetization, IS(), in the total IS decreases in the same order, from IS()/IS 1 for E-chondrites to IS()/IS 0 for C-chondrites. Thus, E-, H-, L-, LL- and C-chondrites and achondrites are well separated in a diagram of IS()/IS versus I, which could be called a magnetic classification diagram for stony meteorites.

As the surface skin layer of all meteorites is anomalously magnetized, it must be removed and the natural remanent magnetization (NRM) of the unaltered interior only must be examined for the paleomagnetic study. The NMR of C-chondrites is highly stable and that of achondrites is reasonably stable against AF-demagnetization, whereas the NMR of E-chondrites and ordinary chondrites as well as stony-iron meteorites is not very stable in most cases. Although the NRM of iron meteorites is reasonably stable, it is not attributable to the extraterrestrial magnetic field.

The paleointensity for Allende C3-chondrite is estimated to be about 1.0 Oe assuming that its NRM is of TRM origin. The paleointensity for other reasonably reliable C-chondrites (Orgueil, Mighei, Leoville and Karoonda) is also around 1 Oe.

The paleointensity for two achondrites has been determined to be about 0.1 Oe. The NRM of other achondrites also suggests that their paleointensity is roughly 0.1 Oe.

The NRM of ordinary chondrites is less stable than that of C-chondrites and achondrites so that the estimated paleointensity for ordinary chondrites is less reliable. The paleointensity for comparatively reliable ordinary chondrites ranges from 0.1 to 0.4 Oe.

The paleointensity values of 1 Oe for C-chondrites and 0.1 Oe for achondrites may represent the early solar nebula magnetic field about 4.5 × 109 years ago. A possibility that the paleomagnetic field for achondrites was a magnetic field attributable to a dynamo within a metallic core of their parent planet may also not be rejected.  相似文献

The paleomagnetic field intensity is estimated with the aid of the Koenigsberger-Thellier method for four ordinary chondrites and one carbonaceous chondrite by assuming that the stable NRM component of these meteorites is attributable to the TRM acquired in a low-temperature range (lower than about 400°C) during their extremely-slow cooling process. The results are summarized in Table IV, where the paleomagnetic field intensity ranges from 0.10 to 0.97 Oe.Possible effects of the extremely-slow cooling rate of meteorites and the secondary TRM acquisition of the surface fusion crust upon the original NRM of the meteorite interior are discussed.  相似文献

To test the reliability of the Thellier method for paleointensity determinations, we studied six historic lavas from Hawaii and two Gauss-age lava flows from Raiatea Island (French Polynesia). Our aim is to investigate the effects of the NRM fraction and concave-up behavior of NRM–thermal remanent magnetization (TRM) diagrams on paleointensity determinations. For the Hawaiian samples, the paleointensity results were investigated at both sample and site levels. For consistency and confidence in the paleointensity results, it is important to measure multiple samples from each cooling unit. The results from the Raiatea Island samples confirm that reliable paleointensities can be obtained from NRM–TRM diagrams with concave-up curvature, provided the data are accompanied by successful partial TRM (pTRM) checks and no significant chemical remanent magnetization (CRM) production. We conclude that reliable determinations of the paleofield strength require analyses of linear segments representing at least 40–50% of the total NRM. This new criterion has to be considered for future studies and for evaluating published paleointensities for calculating average geomagnetic field models. Using this condition together with other commonly employed selection criteria, the observed mean site paleointensities are typically within 10% of the Definitive Geomagnetic Reference Field (DGRF). Our new results for the Hawaii 1960 lava flow are in excellent agreement with the expected value, in contrast to significant discrepancies observed in some earlier studies.

Overestimates of paleointensity determinations can arise from cooling-rate dependence of TRM acquisition, viscous remanent magnetization (VRM) at elevated temperatures, and TRM properties of multidomain (MD) particles. These outcomes are exaggerated at lower temperature ranges. Therefore, we suggest that, provided the pTRM checks are successful and there is no significant CRM production, it is better to increase the NRM fraction used in paleointensity analyses rather than to maximize correlation coefficients of line segments on the NRM–TRM diagrams.

We introduce the factor, Q = Nq, to assess the quality of the weighted mean paleointensity, Hw, for each cooling unit.  相似文献

A single-heating procedure is presented which makes possible the determination of two partially independent values of paleofield intensity for a given sample, one serving as a check to the other. The approach combines data required for Shaw-type and “ARM-method” determinations and in so doing furnishes a value of the ratio of TRM to ARM acquisition efficiency (f′) corrected for any physicochemical alteration to the magnetic carriers which may have occurred during laboratory heating.

Applicability of the Shaw-method to Fe-bearing samples is favorably demonstrated through simulated paleointensity determinations conducted on synthetic samples containing multi-domain grains. Moreover, coercivity spectra corresponding to anhysteretic remanent magnetization (ARM) are found to be considerably more sensitive to thermally induced alteration when compared with those corresponding to thermoremanent magnetization (TRM).

The combined Shaw-ARM procedure was successfully applied to lunar basalt sample 10017,135 rendering a paleointensity of 0.82 ± 0.11 Oe. The Thellier-Thellier method, however, was not able to provide a meaningful determination on the neighboring chip (number 136). These apparently conflicting findings may be explained by one or more of the following possible interpretations: (1) multiple step-wise heatings cause considerably more damage to the carriers of remanence than does a single-heating procedure; (2) the rock possesses extreme variability in magnetic properties from one sub-sample to the other; (3) the natural remanent magnetization in this lunar basalt is not a simple TRM.  相似文献

In order to better constrain the Li isotope composition of the bulk solar system and Li isotope fractionation during accretion and parent body processes, Li isotope compositions and concentrations were determined on a number of meteorite falls and finds. This is the first comprehensive study that systematically investigates a representative set of samples from carbonaceous chondrites (CI, CM2, CO3, CV3, CK4 and one ungrouped member), enstatite chondrites (EH, EL), ordinary chondrites (H, L, LL), and achondrites (one eucrite, diogenites, one pallasite, and a silicate inclusion from a IAB iron).

Carbonaceous chondrites have an average isotope composition of δ7Li = + 3.2‰ ± 1.9 (2σ) which agrees with the average composition of relatively pristine olivines (representative for the bulk composition) from the Earth primitive upper mantle (PUM). This is lighter than the average δ7Li of the basaltic differentiates of the Earth, Moon and Mars and the achondrites. It is an important observation, however, that the lighter end of the isotopic range of the differentiates always coincides with the averages of the mantle olivines and the carbonaceous chondrites. From this we conclude that the bulk of the inner solar system consists mostly of material from carbonaceous chondrites and that the variation seen in the differentiates is due to planetary body processes. Ordinary chondrites are significantly lighter than carbonaceous chondrites. No significant differences in δ7Li exist between enstatite chondrites (n = 3) and carbonaceous or ordinary chondrites. The difference between carbonaceous and ordinary chondrites and the variability within the chondrites could indicate the existence of distinct Li isotope reservoirs in the early solar nebula.  相似文献

The natural remanent magnetization (NRM) in individual chondrules from the Allende meteorite was measured. These had previously been oriented relative to each other. The NRM directions of the chondrules are not initially random, but they become scattered after either alternating field (AF) or thermal demagnetization. The NRM is less stable than anhysteretic remanent magnetization (ARM) against AF-demagnetization.

The bulk of the NRM in the matrix is erased by 300°C. For the larger chondrules it is erased by 550°C, but for the smaller chondrules and the white inclusion a substantial decrease in NRM occurs by 350°C leaving about 20% up to 600°C. The behavior of the laboratory-induced ARM and the NRM under alternating field demagnetization suggest that the NRM of the chondrules consists of at least two components of TRM. One is a high-temperature component which was acquired when the individual chondrules were cooled through the Curie temperature and before they were assembled into the Allende meteorite. The other is a low-temperature component which was probably acquired in a field of about 1 Oe when the meteorite experienced thermal metamorphism or during the assembly of the meteorite.  相似文献

A study of feldspar grain size and microprobe analysis of coexisting orthopyroxene, olivine, diopside, and metal in twenty equilibrated LL-group chondrites and clasts defines the conditions of metamorphism, indicates the relative position of samples within the parent body, and suggests an accretionary-metamorphic history.

Variation of mineral chemistry indicates a range of equilibrium temperature and parallels textural variation, providing two continuous relative temperature scales, based on mean feldspar grain size and the calcium content of orthopyroxene coexisting with diopside. Maximum equilibrium temperatures range from less than 600° up to 950°C. The total Tschermak's component in orthopyroxene indicates that maximum pressure was less than 1 kbar, and a pressure gradient correlates directly with temperature. A reduction sequence, evident from systematic variation of iron in ferromagnesian silicates and metal, correlates inversely with temperature.

The maximum permissible sampling depth for the formation of surface breccias (2/10 r) also limits pressure to less than 1 kbar. The LL parent body had a minimum radius of 200 km, determined using the permissible sampling depth and published cooling rates.

The data are broadly consistent with simple reheating of colder material within a completely accreted body. This model may have problems with volatile depletion, a required lack of impact sampling during metamorphism, and the timing of the event. The data are more consistent with accretion of colder material on a hot but cooling surface. Both models apparently require a recycling process during accretion to account for the reduction sequence.  相似文献

Nearly 4,000 Fe, Ni and Co analyses have been carried out on the metal phases of 12 Antarctic chondritic meteorites by means of the electron microprobe. H-group chondrites show relatively simple patterns of variation for these elements but L- and LL-group members show much more scatter in both Ni and Co concentrations. A single member of the CO3 group investigated shows some scatter in the concentrations and also much higher Co concentrations in the high-Ni (awaruite?) phase (1.25–2%) than in the coexisting kamacite (0.2–0.5%). Thus, analysis of the metal phases can provide not only a means of identifying the group to which a meteorite belongs, but also the possibility of distinguishing between individual chondrites from the same group.

The overall concentrations of Co in the metal particles in the different groups are considered to be related inversely to the abundance of metal grains in meteorites of these groups while the scatter is interpreted as reflecting characteristics inherited at the time of accretion. The absence of homogenisation of the concentrations of Fe, Ni and Co in the metal particles, even in so-called equilibrated chondrites, provides further evidence against the widely held notion that these meteorites have been involved in a high-temperature prograde metamorphism.  相似文献

Rock magnetic criteria for the detection of biogenic magnetite   总被引:15,自引:0,他引:15
We report results on the magnetic properties of magnetites produced by magnetotactic and dissimilatory iron-reducing bacteria. Magnetotactic bacterial (MTB) strains MS1, MV1 and MV2 and dissimilatory iron-reducing bacterium strain GS-15, grown in pure cultures, were used in this study. Our results suggest that a combination of room temperature coercivity analysis and low temperature remanence measurements provides a characteristic magnetic signature for intact chains of single domain (SD) particles of magnetite from MTBs. The most useful magnetic property measurements include: (1) acquisition and demagnetization of isothermal remanent magnetization (IRM) using static, pulse and alternating fields; (2) acquisition of anhysteretic remanent magnetization (ARM); and (3) thermal dependence of low temperature (20 K) saturation IRM after cooling in zero field (ZFC) or in a 2.5 T field (FC) from 300 K. However, potentially the most diagnostic magnetic parameter for magnetosome chain identification in bulk sediment samples is related to the difference between low temperature zero-field and field cooled SIRMs on warming through the Verwey transition (T ≈ 100 K). Intact chains of unoxidized magnetite magnetosomes have ratios of δFCZFC greater than 2, where the parameter δ is a measure of the amount of remanence lost by warming through the Verwey transition. Disruption of the chain structure or conversion of the magnetosomes to maghemite reduces the δFCZFC ratio to around 1, similar to values observed for some inorganic magnetite, maghemite, greigite and GS-15 particles. Numerical simulations of δFCZFC ratios for simple binary mixtures of magnetosome chains and inorganic magnetic fractions suggest that the δFCZFC parameter can be a sensitive indicator of biogenic magnetite in the form of intact chains of magnetite magnetosomes and can be a useful magnetic technique for identifying them in whole-sediment samples. The strength of our approach lies in the comparative ease and rapidity with which magnetic measurements can be made, compared to techniques such as electron microscopy.  相似文献

Electron microprobe and reflected light microscopic examinations confirm the presence of composite grains of ferrian ilmenite with Xilm = 0.53 and titanomagnetite with Xusp = 0.13 in a dacite with self-reversed TRM. A parallel TRM component associated with titanomagnetite and a reversed component associated with self-reversing ferrian ilmenite are the principal NRM components. A subordinate, parallel component is associated with ferrian ilmenite which is not magnetically coupled to an “χ-phase”. The natural self-reversing properties are mainly a consequence of the dacite's high quenching temperature, calculated at 862–864°C using the Fe—Ti oxide geothermometer, and are most consistent with the self-reversal mechanism proposed by Lawson et al. [9].The conduction of thermal demagnetization and TRM induction tests in air had a much greater effect on the Fe—Ti oxides than did natural cooling, and resulted in significant oxidation with the consequent modification of some magnetic properties and the formation of another reversed TRM component. The subdivision of titanomagnetite grains by oxidation along fractures decreased its effective grain size and caused an apparent increase in its magnetic intensity, in addition to a slight increase in its resistance to alternating field demagnetization. The χ-phase associated with the reversed NRM component, with 0.42 > Xilm 0.31, became Fe-enriched during the earlier stages of heat treatment. It is suggested that after heating at 600°C for two hours or more, this χ-phase exsolves as titanohematite with Xilm < 0.33. The ferrian ilmenite host is consequently enriched in Ti, and another χ-phase much closer in composition to the host generates a reversed TRM component with Tb < 200°C.  相似文献

We have observed natural remanent magnetizations (NRM), ranging from 10−3 to 10−5 Gauss cm3/g, at least two orders of magnitude greater than 10−7, the noise level of our spinner magnetometer, in the carbonaceous chondrites, Orgueil, Cold Bokkeveld, Nogoya and Mighei. Preliminary alternating field demagnetization of two samples of Orgueil showed a moderate sized stable component of 10−4 Gauss cm3/g. Microscopic study reveals that a grey spinel oxide, Ni-Fe and an Fe sulphide are the principal opaque minerals in both Cold Bokkeveld and Orgueil; the oxide phase predominates in both, while the Ni-Fe is more visible in the former. Coercive force determinations in Orgueil and Cold Bokkeveld indicate single domain particles as the NRM carrier. These meteorites are suitable for the determination of the magnetic field intensity in the primary solar nebula.  相似文献

Optically “striated” orthopyroxenes in two ordinary chondrites, Allegan (H5) and Quenggouk (H4), are compared with shock-affected orthopyroxenes in Saint-Sévérin (LL6) and Ambapur Nagla (H5) by high-voltage transmission electron microscopy. The striated orthopyroxenes have very many, thin, evenly distributed lamellae of clinopyroxene. They are undeformed and also lack evidence of partial inversion from clinopyroxene to orthopyroxene. Striated orthopyroxene does not seem to be a reliable indicator of prograde metamorphism. Instead, it is interpreted as inverted protopyroxene, produced during the cooling of chondrules at slower rates than the rapid quenching of Type 3 chondrules. The conclusions are consistent with retrograde models for the evolution of H-group chondrites, in which the higher Petrologic Types are attributed to retarded cooling due to accretionary processes leading to the growth of the parent body. The thermal histories of ordinary chondrites could be greatly clarified by further experimental work on inversions in bronzitic pyroxenes.  相似文献

Recent understandings of planetary accretion have suggested that accumulation of a small number of large planetesimals dominates intermediate to final growth stages of the terrestrial planets, with impact velocity high enough to induce extensive melting of the planetesimal and target materials, resulting in formation of a large molten region in which gravitational segregation of silicate and metal, that is, core formation proceeds. In case of homogeneous accretion, volatiles contained in each planetesimal are likely subjected to partitioning among gas, silicate melt, and molten metallic iron at significantly high temperatures and pressures in such a massive molten region. Each phase would subsequently form the proto-atmosphere, -mantle, or-core, respectively. Such chemical reprocessing of H and C associated with core formation, which is followed by both degassing from mantle and atmospheric escape, may result in a diverse range of H2O/CO2 in planetary surface environments, which mainly depends on the H and C content relative to metallic iron in planetary building stones. This may explain inferred difference in volatile distribution between the Earth's (relatively H2O-rich, CO2-poor) and the martian (H2O-poor, CO2-rich) surface environments. Such volatile redistribution may be systematically described by using the retentivity of H2O, ξ, defined as follows: ξ = 1 − ([CO]0 + 2[CH4]0 + 2[C(gr)]0)/[H2O]0, where [i]0 represents mol number of species i partitioned into non-metallic phases, that is, gas and silicate melt in impact-induced molten region. When ξ > 0.5, relatively H2O-rich and CO2-poor surface environment may eventually evolve, although a small portion of H2O partitioned into the NON=metallic phases are possibly consumed by subsequent chemical reactions with reduced C-species with producing CO2 and H2. When ξ< 0.5, on the contrary, H2O consumption by the above reactions and selective loss of H2 to space may result in relative H2O-depleted and CO2-rich surface environment. Given the building stone composition by the two-component model by Ringwood (1977) and Wänke (1981), ξ is found to decrease with increasing the mixing fraction of the volatile-rich component: ξ > 0.5 for the mixing fraction smaller than about 15–20% and ξ < 0 for the mixing fraction larger than about 20–30%. This is not significantly dependent on temperature and pressure in molten region and H/C ratio in the building stone. The estimated mixing fraction of the volatile-rich component, about 10% for the Earth and 35% for Mars, is consistent with the observed difference in volatile distribution between the surfaces of both planets.  相似文献

New measurements of high field magnetisation (Is), remanence (Is), and coercive force (Hc) are presented between 4 and 300 K for x = 0.4, 0.5, 0.6 and 0.8 (Fe3−xTixO4). For x = 0.4 a pronounced minimum is found at T100 K and for X = 0.5 and 0.6 broad minima occur around T200 K, apparently coinciding with the temperature for K10. The magnetic properties below T60 K ar complex and were found to be significantly changed by cooling in the presence of a high magnetic field. With no applied field during cooling, a distinct decrease in Is is observed for T60 K, at which temperature there is a peak in the value of Irs. The effe cooling is to eliminate the sharp decrease in Is, reduce Hc and to increase Irs below 60 K to a value the peak value, giving essentially a square hysteresis loop. The results are interpreted in terms of a form of crystallographic phase transition coupled to the magnetisation direction, possibly by the magnetostriction. Square hysteresis loops in ferrites have been explained by the presence of Jahn-Teller ions and, in the present case, the low temperature of the observed effect may be a consequence of the weak Fe2+ Jahn-Teller ion coupled to other effects such as spin-lattice coupling.

Details of this work can be found in Schmidbauer, E. and Readman, P.W., 1982. Low temperature magnetic properties of Ti-rich Fe---Ti spinels. J. Magn. Magn. Mat., 27: 114–118. A paper reporting further work on Fe2.4Ti0.6O0.4 is in preparation.  相似文献

Microscopic investigations have been done on the chondrites Sena and Nadiabondi (H5, not shocked), Ste. Marguerite en Comines (H4, very slightly shocked), Allegan (H5, slightly shocked). Only in such cases can the matrix be easily observed and compared to those of type 3 chondrites. The <100 μm debris found in types 4 and 5 that we have observed are not the result of the metamorphism of type 3 fines. The abundance of tiny debris is in direct relation with the intensity of the shock though this shock was insufficient to provoke either the induration of the stones or a significant loss of rare gases. The bulk of the fines are the result of local disaggregation of the most brittle parts from chondrules and fragments.A low-temperature matrix has not been observed in these meteorites but only in H3 chondrites, as a coating around the chondrules. The accretion modelists should take into account the absence or the scarcity of fine particles in their calculations.  相似文献

North-seeking bacteria (NSB) with 1 μm diameters migrate to the S pole only. They were applied to identify the S pole determination on a polished surface of magnetite-rich pyroxenite whose natural remanent magnetization (NRM) intensity was 5.64 × 10−3 Am2 kg−1. The microscopic observations were performed under dark-field illumination in a controlled magnetic field to 10 μT. The NSB formed clusters on limited areas of magnetite grains and scattered over the whole magnetite grains.

The NRM decreased to 1.02 × 10−5 Am2 kg−1 by alternating field (AF) demagnetization to 60 mT but no clusters appeared, while small populations of the NSB scattered on each grain. These scattered bacteria may gather toward the S pole resulting from magnetic domain walls.

When the sample acquired saturation isothermal remanent magnetization (SIRM) to 1 T, the NSB formed dense clusters at the opposite side to the applied field direction on the many grains as expected. This evidence indicated that the NSB can be useful micro-organisms for the determination of fine magnetic structures. Some grains also had NSB clusters at the edge of the grains toward the field direction or did not exhibit any clusters. The complicated distribution of the clusters (the S poles) may be explained by shape anisotropy of the magnetic grains.  相似文献

Small-scale motions in the Earth's liquid core are likely to be highly anisotropic because of the effects of rotation. Guided by physical considerations, the “-effect” described by an anisotropic tensor ik is formulated and the corresponding boundary value problem for a sphere is solved for a variety of boundary conditions. A converged solution has been obtained only in the case of the Fermi condition of an infinitely conducting exterior of the sphere. In a second part of the paper, some remarks are made on the hypothetical upper bound on magnetic field strengths in planetary cores originally proposed by Busse (1976).  相似文献

SEM, optical and chemical observations have been performed on 12 H3-6 chondrites, 9 of them being also studied by other groups. Morphological features of chondrules and crystals (growth steps) are shown; the significance of the finely crystallised troilite in Menow and Ambapur Nagla is discussed in the light of the discovery that the NiFe blebs associated with it are Ni-rich (50–60% Ni). Sulphur should have been mobilized without shock evidence possibly as a result of solar heating. Pre-chondritic relict material is recognized by anomalous or variable mineral compositions, and in some cases, by the presence of overgrowths on relict cores. After short notes on individual chondrites, a tentative history of H chondrites is proposed. The chondrule-forming episode is considered as a remelting of pre-existing material. The accretion would immediately follow this event for type 6 (around 1000°C), and would occur at progressively lower temperature for types 5 and 4. Type 3 would represent material coming from an extended source region, an hypothesis consistent with the broader range composition of the particles and with their cooling before accretion to much lower temperatures (below 350°C).  相似文献

This paper reports the alternating field demagnetization characteristics of glass–ceramic magnetite assemblages carrying weak-field thermoremanent magnetization (TRM), weak-field anhysteretic remanent magnetization (ARM), and saturation remanence (Jrs). Average grain sizes vary from less than 0.1 μm to approximately 100 μm, and hysteresis parameters indicate that these assemblages encompass single-domain (SD) through truly multidomain (MD) behavior. In all assemblages, weak-field TRM and weak-field ARM are more stable to alternating field demagnetization than is (Jrs). This response is especially remarkable in the 100 μm assemblage, which otherwise displays truly MD behavior. Although the SD samples pass the Lowrie–Fuller test for SD behavior, calculations presented here show that populations of noninteracting, uniaxial SD grains should behave in just the opposite sense to that reported originally by Lowrie and Fuller. This discrepancy could indicate that SD, glass–ceramic magnetite populations are more affected by magnetic interactions than would be expected for magnetite crystals that nucleated individually from a silicate matrix. This interpretation is supported by the SD assemblages failing the ‘Cisowski' test: that is, the curves for acquisition and AF demagnetization of (Jrs) intersect well below the 50% mark. However, a second and intriguing explanation of the SD-like results obtained from all samples is that alternating field demagnetization characteristics reflect a strong dependence of local energy minimum domain state, and its associated stability, on the state of magnetization.  相似文献
