Hydrothermal alteration zones have been investigated by X-ray diffraction, mineralogical–petrographical techniques, and geochemical analysis. Examination of cores and cuttings from two drill sites, obtained from a depth of about 814–1020 m, show that the hydrothermal minerals occuring in the rock include: K-feldspar, albite, chlorite, alunite, kaolinite, smectite, illite, and opaque minerals. In the studied area, silicified, smectite, illite, alunite, and opal zones have been recognized. These alteration mineral assemblages indicate that there are geothermal fluids, which have temperatures of 150–220°C in the reservoir. The distribution of the hydrothermal minerals shows changes in the chemical composition of the hydrothermal fluid, which are probably due not only to interaction with host rock, but also to dilution of the Na–K–Cl-rich hydrothermal fluid of the deep reservoir by cold sea water at shallow levels. Geochemical analyses of the solid and liquid phases indicate that the hydrothermal fluids of the Tuzla geothermal system are in equilibrium with alteration products. The tectonic structure of the studied area is caused by NW–SE and NE–SW directional forces. The volcanic rocks where hydrothermal zones are observed in the studied area are of Lower–Middle Miocene age comprise latite, andesite, dacite, rhyolite-type lavas, tuff, and ignimbrites.  相似文献

Granulites in the Dabie Mountains are mainly ob-served in northern Dabie complex zone. Huangtuling intermediate-acid granulites and Huilanshan mafic granulites in the Luotian dome are two famous out-crops (Fig. 1)[1]. It is important to know the genesis and metamorphic age of these granulites for under-standing tectonic evolution and exhumation history of the Dabie Mountains. Previous geochemical and geo-chronological work[2―8]1) on the Huangtuling granu-lites indicates that their protoli…  相似文献

Dissolution of igneous feldspar and the formation and occurrence of secondary feldspar in tholeiitic basalts from the Hengill volcanic centre, in SW Iceland was studied by microprobe analysis of cuttings from two ca. 2000 m deep geothermal wells. Well NG-7 in Nesjavellir represents a geothermal system in a rift zone where the intensity of young, insignificantly altered intrusions increases with depth. Well KhG-1 in Kolviðarhóll represents the margin of a rift zone where the intensity of intrusives is lower and the intensity of alteration higher. This marginal well represents altered basaltic crust in an early retrograde state. The secondary plagioclase in both wells is mainly oligoclase, occurring in association with K-feldspar and chlorite±actinolite. The texture of this assemblage depends on the lithology and intensity of alteration. In Nesjavellir (NG-7) the composition of secondary albite-oligoclase is correlated with the host-rock composition. This connection is not apparent in more intensely altered samples from Kolviðarhóll (KhG-1). The influence of temperature on composition of secondary Na-feldspar is unclear in both wells although Ca is expected to increase with temperature. Any temperature dependence may be suppressed by the influence of rock composition in Nesjavellir and by retrograde conditions at Kolviðarhóll. The absence of clear compositional gradients between igneous plagioclase and secondary feldspar and between Na-feldspar and K-feldspar suggests that secondary feldspars formed by dissolution precipitation reactions.  相似文献

Hydrothermal alteration at Mount Rainier waxed and waned over the 500,000-year episodic growth of the edifice. Hydrothermal minerals and their stable-isotope compositions in samples collected from outcrop and as clasts from Holocene debris-flow deposits identify three distinct hypogene argillic/advanced argillic hydrothermal environments: magmatic-hydrothermal, steam-heated, and magmatic steam (fumarolic), with minor superimposed supergene alteration. The 3.8 km3 Osceola Mudflow (5600 y BP) and coeval phreatomagmatic F tephra contain the highest temperature and most deeply formed hydrothermal minerals. Relatively deeply formed magmatic-hydrothermal alteration minerals and associations in clasts include quartz (residual silica), quartz–alunite, quartz–topaz, quartz–pyrophyllite, quartz–dickite/kaolinite, and quartz–illite (all with pyrite). Clasts of smectite–pyrite and steam-heated opal–alunite–kaolinite are also common in the Osceola Mudflow. In contrast, the Paradise lahar, formed by collapse of the summit or near-summit of the edifice at about the same time, contains only smectite–pyrite and near-surface steam-heated and fumarolic alteration minerals. Younger debris-flow deposits on the west side of the volcano (Round Pass and distal Electron Mudflows) contain only low-temperature smectite–pyrite assemblages, whereas the proximal Electron Mudflow and a < 100 y BP rock avalanche on Tahoma Glacier also contain magmatic-hydrothermal alteration minerals that are exposed in the avalanche headwall of Sunset Amphitheater, reflecting progressive incision into deeper near-conduit alteration products that formed at higher temperatures.  相似文献

A single garnet clinopyroxenite xenolith found at the Dish Hill basanite cone near Ludlow, California, has well developed unmixing and reaction textures like those found in garnet pyroxenite inclusions in Hawaiian, African and Australian basalts and like those of pyroxenites in some European alpine peridotites. Reconstructed pyroxene compositions suggest that before unmixing the rock consisted of clinopyroxene and about 10% garnet plus spinel, but all of the garnet may have been dissolved in clinopyroxene. Most or all of the garnet formed by exsolution from clinopyroxene and by reaction between clinopyroxene and spinel in an open system. Following exsolution, the rock was deformed and partly recrystallized in the solid state. Similarity of compositions of exsolved and recrystallized minerals suggests recrystallization at P-T conditions similar to those of exsolution. The rock is not the chemical equivalent of the host basanite and cannot represent magma of basanitic composition crystallized in the mantle. Its history of deformation and recrystallization, like that of accompanying spinel lherzolite inclusions, supports the idea that the garnet clinopyroxenite is an accidental inclusion derived from the upper mantle.  相似文献

The Grand Brûlé borehole intersects a thick pile of basaltic lavas, down to 1010 m, and a basic-ultrabasic intrusive complex, from 1010 to 3003.50 m.The lavas are, in general, unaltered except in two fractured zones, where hydrothermal fluids circulated at temperatures not exceeding 350 ° C. The main secondary minerals there are pyroxene, feldspar, epidote, actinolite and chlorite. The entire thickness of the intrusive body intersected contains secondary minerals representing three stages of cooling:
1. 1. A late magmatic episode (600–900°C) characterized by biotite, kaersutite, edenite and pargasite.
2. 2. A hydrothermal episode (T<- 350°C) characterized by epidote, albite, biotite, actinolite and chlorite.
3. 3. A phase of serpentinization (T≤ 350°C).
It is very likely that the two later events occurred simultaneously, with physical and chemical interference.  相似文献

Chemical interaction of thermal fluids with reservoir rock in the Roosevelt Hot Springs thermal area, Utah, has resulted in the development of characteristic trace-element dispersion patterns. Multielement analyses of surface rock samples, soil samples and drill cuttings from deep exploration wells provide a three-dimensional perspective of chemical redistribution within this structurally-controlled hot-water geothermal system.Five distinctive elemental suites of chemical enrichment are recognized, each characteristic of a particular combination of physical and chemical conditions within the geothermal system. These are: (1) concentrations of As, Sb, Be, and Hg associated with siliceous material at locations of liquid discharge, fluid mixing or boiling; (2) concentrations of Mn, Ba, W, Be, Cu, Co, As, Sb and Hg in manganese and iron oxide deposits; (3) high concentrations of Hg in argillized rock near fumaroles and lower concentrations in a broad diffuse halo surrounding the thermal center; (4) concentrations of As in sulfides and Li in silicate alteration minerals immediately surrounding high-temperature fluid flow-controlling fractures; (5) deposits of CaCO3 at depth where flashing of brine to steam has occurred due to pressure release. The geochemical enrichments are not, in general, widespread, pervasively developed zones of regular form and dimension as are typical in many ore-forming hydrothermal systems. As the geothermal system develops, changes and eventually declines through time, the chemical deposits are developed, remobilized or superimposed upon each other, thus preserving within the rocks a record of the history of the geothermal system. Recognition of trace-element distribution patterns during the exploration of a geothermal system may aid definition of the present geometry and interpretation of the history of the system.  相似文献

Hydrothermal systems in regions of high relief may not have obvious thermal features indicative of their central upflow zone at depth. Investigation of such areas for geothermal energy production in the Philippines has, however, encountered relatively large ( > 10,000 m2) areas of volumetrically significant but diffuse, cold-gas emission and associated intense argillic alteration. These features are likely to be best developed above, or close to, hydrothermal upflow zones. The identification of such features is important for interpreting the hydrology of active geothermal systems in the course of exploration for power development, or when interpreting the paleohydrology of fossil geothermal systems which host epithermal mineral deposits. Such zones of argillic alteration are likely to be barren of precious metals or other elements (except mercury) which are commonly used as pathfinders for precious-metal deposits, but are indicative of subsurface processes significant in ore genesis. It is proposed that the term “kaipohan” be used for such features. Their existence depends on the presence of either a low-permeability geologic formation or where a suitable relationship exists between the hydrology of the deep geothermal reservoir and that of the shallow groundwater system. Such a situation occurs in steep terrain, where much of the area supplying meteoric recharge to the geothermal system is at a lower elevation than the area overlying the centre of the system, and where there is a high annual rainfall. These conditions are typical of andesitic stratovolcanoes in tropical or subtropical island arcs.  相似文献

The Latera field (Vulsini volcanic complex, Latium, Italy) is one of the geothermal areas of the peri-Tyrrhenian belt along which a regional, high thermal anomaly has been detected. So far nine deep wells have been drilled within the Latera caldera and four of them have been productive. The geothermal reservoir is located within the fractured carbonatic rocks of the Tuscan nappe; the overlying volcanic units, sealed by hydrothermal minerals (mainly calcite and anhydrite), act as an impervious cover. The fluid produced by the wells comes from a deep aquifer (about 1000–1500 m depth) which at present is not connected with the shallow aquifer in the volcanoclastic units. Fluid temperatures range between 200 and 230°C; in-hole temperatures as high as 343°C at 2775 m depth have been measured in dry wells. The study of the newly formed mineral assemblages from both volcanic and sedimentary units as sampled from the geothermal wells can be used to reconstruct the thermal evolution of the geothermal field. The intrusion of a syenitic melt, up to a depth of about 2000 m, dated 0.86 Ma, represents the major thermal event for the units in the area and is assumed to represent the first step in the geothermal evolution of the Latera system. The above mentioned newly formed mineral assemblages can be divided into three groups: (a) “contact-metasomatic”: calcite, anhydrite, diopsidic pyroxene, grossularitic garnet, phlogopite, wollastonite or monticellite; (b) “high-temperature hydrothermal”: calcite, anhydrite, K-feldspar, vesuvianite, melanitic garnet, tourmaline, amphibole, epidote, sulphides; (c) “low-temperature hydrothermal”: calcite, anhydrite, K-feldspar, clay minerals, sulphides. Group (a) minerals are now relics. Part of (b) and all of (c) group are still in equilibrium with the existing conditions in different parts of the geothermal system.Thermodynamic calculations on the observed mineral assemblages permitted estimates of the P, T conditions and gas fugacities.  相似文献

Mineralogical and hydrogen isotopic studies have been made on clay minerals occurring in the Ohnuma geothermal area, northeastern Japan. Here, clay minerals such as smectite, kaolinite, dickite, sericite, and chlorite were formed by hydrothermal alteration of Miocene rocks. A chemical equilibrium can be assumed to be attained from the fact that the amount of expandable layer in the interstratified chlorite/smectite decreases and the polytype of sericite changes from 1M to 2M1 with increasing depth and temperature. The hydrogen isotopic composition (D/H) of the clay minerals is lighter than that of the geothermal and local meteoric waters by about 20–40‰. The hydrogen isotopic fractionation factors αmineral-water are as follows: 0.972–0.985 for kaolinite and dickite, 0.973–0.977 for sericite, and 0.954–0.987 for chlorite. In the temperature range from 100 to 250°C, the hydrogen isotopic fractionation factors between these minerals and water are not sensitive to the temperature. αchlorite-water depends on the kind of octahedrally coordinated cations which lie close to the hydroxyl groups; it becomes large with an increase of Mg content of chlorite.  相似文献

Gabbroic rocks and amphibolites were collected from the KR03‐01‐D10 dredge site located on the West Arm Rise of the Godzilla Megamullion, close to the Parece Vela Rift which appears to correspond to the termination area of a detachment fault, the Philippine Sea. The gabbroic rocks and amphibolites reveal the occurrence of a high hydrothermal activity in the lower crust close to a paleo‐ridge. In the gabbroic rocks, plagioclase compositions of both porphyroclasts and matrix were transformed into sodium‐rich compositions close to albite. Amphiboles are of secondary rather than igneous origin based on their microstructural occurrences. In the amphibolites, anorthite contents of porphyroclasts and matrix plagioclase are relatively lower than those of the gabbroic rocks, whereas the chemical compositions of amphibole within the amphibolites are similar to those of amphibole within the gabbroic rocks. Amphibolites represent the product of retrograde metamorphism associated with hydrothermal alteration of the gabbroic body by the reaction: clinopyroxene + calcic plagioclase + fluid → amphibole + sodic plagioclase. The estimated temperatures of the amphibolites derived from the amphibole thermobarometer and the gabbroic rocks derived from the hornblende–plagioclase geothermometer show ~700–950°C and 650–840°C, respectively. The hydrothermal alteration recorded in the gabbroic rocks possibly occurred under high‐T conditions; the rocks were then metamorphosed to the amphibolites during a retrogressive stage. Our study indicates that amphibolitization took place with various degrees of deformation. It may imply that the hydrothermal activity increased as the Godzilla Megamullion developed as an oceanic core complex in the paleo‐ridge.  相似文献

Abstract Garnet clinopyroxenite containing porphyroclastic clinopyroxene with garnet lamellae from the Su-Lu ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) province, eastern China, records a three-stage evolutionary history. Stage A: precursor aluminous clinopyroxene associated with Mg-rich spinel was stable. Stage B: Mg-rich spinel and aluminous clinopyroxene recrystallized to form porphyroblasts of garnet and diopside with garnet lamellae, respectively. Thereafter, these porphyroblasts were granulated and recrystallized to form equigranular neoblasts in the matrix, being driven by subsolidus deformation. Stage C: the assemblage developed retrograde hornblende, epidote, spinel, chlorite, calcite, and dolomite. The estimated composition of the precursor aluminous clinopyroxene indicates that equilibrium conditions of the stage A were 900-1000°C, and 1.0-1.5 GPa. The neoblast garnet-clinopyroxene pairs, not conjectural, give 740 ± 50°C and higher than 2.5 GPa for the climax conditions of stage B. This implies that the Hujialin garnet clinopyroxenite was transported from a low dP/dT setting to a high dP/dT setting, probably related to subduction during stage B. The Hujialin garnet clinopyroxenite as well as adjacent UHP eclogite which records 700°C and 3.0 GPa as the maximum physical conditions, experienced amphibolite facies retrogression, suggesting that they shared a common P-T history during exhumation.  相似文献

Intrusive and extrusive basaltic rocks have been dredged from the Conrad fracture zone (transecting the slow-spreading America-Antarctica Ridge). The majority of rocks recovered are holocrystalline with the dominant mineral assemblage being plagioclase plus clinopyroxene with or without minor Fe-Ti oxides (olivine occurs in only three samples) and many of the samples show evidence of extensive alteration. Secondary minerals include chlorite, actinolite, K- and Na-feldspar, analcite and epidote. In terms of bulk chemistry the rocks are characterized by their generally evolved and highly variable compositions (e.g.Mg*=0.65?0.35;TiO2=0.7?3.6%;Zr=31?374ppm;Nb=<3?21ppm;Y=17?96ppm;Ni=100?9ppm), but with respect to the immobile incompatible element ratios (e.g. Zr/Nb, Y/Nb, La/Sm) are similar to “normal” or depleted mid-oceanic ridge basalts.Quantitative major and trace element modelling indicate that most of the variation observed can be attributed to low-pressure fractional crystallization of plagioclase plus clinopyroxene in approximately equal proportions with or without minor Fe-Ti oxides. The range in composition can be accounted for by up to 76% fractional crystallization. Although ferrobasalts have not frequently been associated with slow spreading ridges, the extreme differentiation observed in the Conrad fracture zone basalts implies some additional constraint other than spreading rate on the formation of ferrobasalt and reaffirms the importance of extensive crustal differentiation during the production of this basalt type.  相似文献

Abstract   Geothermal waters in the Niigata Sedimentary Basin, central Japan, are divided into four groups based on their chemical composition (i.e. Na-SO4-type, Na-SO4-Cl-type, Na-Cl-type and Na-Cl-HCO3-type). The Na-SO4-type geothermal water forms as a consequence of water–rock interaction and generally occurs in the outer part of the basin. The Na-Cl-type geothermal water is further subdivided into the original Na-Cl-type geopressured thermal water and the mixed Na-Cl-type geothermal water, in terms of its geochemical and isotopic composition. The original Na-Cl-type geopressured thermal water originates from a geopressured hydrothermal system containing the altered fossil formation waters that are sealed at depth. It moves up to the upper part of the depositional succession or the ground, and generally does not mix with groundwater that is of meteoric origin. This type of water is cooled by heat conduction. The concentration of Cl in this type of thermal water is very similar to that in seawater. The δD and δ18O values are approximately constant and independent of temperature. The original Na-Cl-type geopressured thermal water is distributed mainly along anticlinal axes in folded Neogene formations. The mixed Na-Cl-type geothermal water is related to the expulsion activity of the geopressured hydrothermal system and occurs mostly along active faults. It is formed by shallow groundwater of meteoric origin being mixed with geopressured hydrothermal water when the geopressured hydrothermal system was expulsed along active faults by paroxysmal tectonic events.  相似文献

The stability of fission tracks in epidote and vesuvianite (idiocrase) was studied at different temperatures for several periods of time. The tracks in epidote are almost as heat-resistant as those in garnet; in vesuvianite they are much less stable. These results are in line with the rule that tracks in minerals with high lattice energies need higher activation energies to fade than in minerals with low lattice energies.  相似文献

The Tayuan(Cu-Mo)-Pb-Zn deposit is located in the northern part of Daxinganling,NE China.Lenticular ore body occurs in the skarn zone. The skarn minerals mainly include garnet, pyroxene, epidote and wollastonite.Electron microprobe analysis shows that the end member of garnet is mainly andradite(Ad_(62-97)Gr_(11-45),the pyroxene is mainly diopside, and epidote is mainly clinozoisite. These characteristics indicate that the Tayuan polymetallic skarn deposit is mainly calcareous skarn.Sometimes the content zonation can be observed in garnets. With one garnet crystal, content is shifty from the core to the rim.In general, the iron content in the core is higher than in the edge. The content in the garnet shows that the garnet in the Tayuan deposit formed from weak oxidation in alkaline environment with the oxygen fugacity increasing, suggesting that the hydrothermal fluid evolved from an acidic to a slight alkaline state. In the Tayuan polymetallic deposit, the ratio of Mn/Fe in pyroxene is about 1.3,and of Mg/Fe,it is about 2.The components of garnet in the Tayuan deposit plot in the field of the typical skarn Zn,Cu,Mo deposits in the world.  相似文献

Calculation of oxygen isotope fractionation in hydroxyl-bearing silicates   总被引:33,自引:0,他引:33
The modified increment method has been applied to the calculation of oxygen isotope fractionation factors for hydroxyl-bearing silicate minerals. The order of 18O enrichment obtained in common rock-forming minerals is: pyrophyllite > kaolinite > tourmaline talc > prehnite topaz > illite > phengite > lepidolite muscovite staurolite > epidote > glaucophane > serpentine chlorite > tremolite > hornblende > phlogopite biotite > humite > norbergite > ilvaite. Hydroxyl-bearing silicates are enriched in 18O relative to hydroxyl groups but depleted in 18O relative to anhydrous counterparts.

Three sets of self-consistent fractionation factors: between quartz and the hydroxyl-bearing silicate minerals, between calcite and the silicate minerals, and between the silicate minerals and water, have been calculated for a temperature range of 0–1200°C. The fractionation factors calculated for mineral pairs are applicable to isotopic geothermometry in igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary petrology. They can be used as a test of isotopic equilibrium or disequilibrium in natural mineral assemblages over all temperature ranges of geological interest. The difference in oxygen isotope composition between the hydroxyl-bearing mineral and the OH group is quantitatively demonstrated to be temperature dependent and, therefore, can be used as a single-mineral geothermometer.  相似文献

Epidote and/or chlorite are common minerals in the roots of the fossil geothermal system of Saint Martin (Lesser Antilles). They appear in four distinct assemblages: (1) epidote+actinolite+quartz±magnetite near the contact between the tuffaceous host rocks (andesitic modal composition) and the quartz-diorite intrusion of Philipsburg; (2) epidote+chlorite+quartz in host rocks as far as a lateral distance of about 3 km from the intrusion; (3) epidote+chlorite+haematite+quartz locally in iron and manganese rich host rocks; (4) chlorite±phengite±magnetite appearing as late sealing of porosity in fracture-controlled quartz veins with strongly phengitized wall rocks. All these assemblages constitute a large alteration grading from propylitic alteration to thermal metamorphism (actinolite-bearing assemblage).Detailed microprobe studies of epidotes replacing plagioclases and of chlorites replacing glass and mafic minerals reveal notable compositional variations which have been studied with respect to temperature paleogradients (estimated from fluid inclusions study), distance from the thermal source and fo2 conditions. The mean Ps+Pm [100 × (Fe3+ + Mn3+)/(Al3+ + Fe3+ + Mn3+)] of epidotes vary from 21 in the presence of magnetite near the intrusion to 32 in haematite-bearing iron and/or manganese volcanic and sedimentary formations. The intra-grain chemical scattering of epidotes increases with increasing distance of the pluton and decreasing temperature of crystallization. All the chlorites coexisting with epidote are Mg-rich (XFe<0.50). Their main compositional variation consists in a significant enrichment in magnesium (toward the chlinochlore end member) in presence of haematite. The intra-grain chemical scattering of chlorite (expressed by the aluminium content in the structural formula) increases with increasing distance of the pluton and decreasing temperature of crystallization. Chlorites associated with phengite and magnetite in vein alteration are Fe- and Al-rich. The Mössbauer spectra indicate that the Fe3+ content of chlorite varies between 25 and 32% of total Fe in the presence of epidote; the higher content being attained in the presence of haematite. The Fe3+ content of chlorite associated with magnetite and phengite is 16% of total Fe. The compositional variations of epidote and/or chlorite of the four distinct assemblages observed at Saint Martin result from the combined effects of fO2, temperature, and time of heating. The effect of fO2 is particularly perceptible in the control of the epidote Ps content, of the chlorite XFe ratio of Fe3+ distribution between coexisting epidotes and chlorites. Despite the fact that it may be partially canceled out by the effect of fO2, the variation of compositional ranges of both epidotes and chlorites, which increases toward the outer part of the geothermal system in response to the combination of decreasing temperatures and decreasing time of heating of the rocks, suggests that chemical equilibrium has not been attained in the assemblages bearing epidotes and chlorites.  相似文献

Abundant metabasites occur in highly deformed granitic and migmatitic gneisses as blocks and lenses of tens of meter size around the Haiyangsuo area, northeast part of Sulu UHP belt, eastern China. They comprise garnet-pyroxene granulites, eclogitized granulites and amphibolites. Their protolith compositions were mainly olivine tholeiite and quartz tholeiite, and show variation from Mg-rich to Fe-rich component as tholeiitic cumulates. Pearce’s element ratio slopes suggested that protolith of these rocks were comagmatic, and generated from a primary magma by fractional crystallization of plagioclase, olivine and clinopyroxene. The crystallization differentiation has also been evidenced by trace elements, such as parallel REE patterns, Ni vs Ce variations, Sr increasing depletions, although the large ion lithophile elements (LILE) were modified to different extent during metamorphism. Trace element composition and Nd isotopes indicate a depleted mantle origin for these rocks. But they are not likely to be fragments of ophiolites or tholeiites connected with subduction, they formed probably at intra-continent environment. Sm-Nd whole rock isochron age of 2252±180Ma indicates approximately the formation age of igneous protolith of these rocks, almost 2000Ma earlier than the formation of the Dabie-Sulu UHP collision zone at about 240–220 Ma.  相似文献
