A coupled atmosphere-ocean-sea ice model is applied to investigate to what degree the area-thickness distribution of new ice formed in open water affects the ice and ocean properties. Two sensitivity experiments are performed which modify the horizontal-to-vertical aspect ratio of open-water ice growth. The resulting changes in the Arctic sea-ice concentration strongly affect the surface albedo, the ocean heat release to the atmosphere, and the sea-ice production. The changes are further amplified through a positive feedback mechanism among the Arctic sea ice, the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), and the surface air temperature in the Arctic, as the Fram Strait sea ice import influences the freshwater budget in the North Atlantic Ocean. Anomalies in sea-ice transport lead to changes in sea surface properties of the North Atlantic and the strength of AMOC. For the Southern Ocean, the most pronounced change is a warming along the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC), owing to the interhemispheric bipolar seasaw linked to AMOC weakening. Another insight of this study lies on the improvement of our climate model. The ocean component FESOM is a newly developed ocean-sea ice model with an unstructured mesh and multi-resolution. We find that the subpolar sea-ice boundary in the Northern Hemisphere can be improved by tuning the process of open-water ice growth, which strongly influences the sea ice concentration in the marginal ice zone, the North Atlantic circulation, salinity and Arctic sea ice volume. Since the distribution of new ice on open water relies on many uncertain parameters and the knowledge of the detailed processes is currently too crude, it is a challenge to implement the processes realistically into models. Based on our sensitivity experiments, we conclude a pronounced uncertainty related to open-water sea ice growth which could significantly affect the climate system sensitivity.  相似文献

南极冰盖与海冰对全球气候具有重要影响。大气河作为高纬度地区经向水汽输送的重要途径,其对南极冰盖与海冰的影响在近年来愈发受到重视。南极大气河通常形成于高压脊(阻塞高压)与温带气旋之间的强向极经向输送带内。低频的大气河活动为南极带来强降雪,有利于冰盖质量增加。然而,强暖湿水汽侵入同时会导致表面融化、冰架崩解和极端高温,对冰盖质量存在潜在负贡献。大气河携带极端暖湿水汽与强风通过热力与动力过程导致海冰密集度下降。目前,大气河的识别算法仍不完善,其对液态降水的直接影响、与南大洋的相互作用等仍不清楚,需要进一步明晰大气河对南极冰盖与海冰的影响机制,以准确预估未来大气河对南极冰盖物质平衡与海冰变化的作用。  相似文献

Considered is the theoretical mechanism of the formation of immovable ice cover along the coast (the fast ice) from the seasonal ice and the mechanism of its destruction. It is demonstrated that the process of formation and spread of the winter stable fast ice is determined by simultaneous impact of several factors: the morphometry of the coast and bottom, the width of the close ice, dynamic effects that shear stress forces of the flow and wind make on the ice, the duration of maintaining the condition of immobility and freezing (adhesion) of the ice, the thickness of adhered ice, and the intensity of thermal growth of ice from below. It is revealed that the permanent factor is the morphometry of coasts and the bottom while the other factors have temporal variability of various scales.  相似文献

Some features of external and internal structures of one-year hummocks formed as a result of multiple interaction of ice fields in various time intervals are considered. A 4-month deployment on Ice Station Weddell (ISW) in the western Weddell Sea yielded over 2000 h of nearly continuous surface-level meteorological data, including eddy-covariance measurements of the turbulent surface fluxes of momentum, and sensible and latent heat. Those data lead to a new parameterization for the roughness length for wind speed, z0, for snow-covered sea ice that combines three regimes: an aerodynamically smooth regime, a high-wind saltation regime, and an intermediate regime between these two extremes where the macroscale or `permanent' roughness of the snow and ice determines z0. Roughness lengths for temperature, zT, computed from this data set corroborate the theoretical model that Andreas published in 1987. Roughness lengths for humidity,zQ, do not support this model as conclusively but are all, on average, within an order of magnitude of its predictions. Only rarely arezTand zQ equal to z0. These parameterizations have implications for models that treat the atmosphere-ice-ocean system.  相似文献

在BCC_RAD辐射传输模式和包含多形状冰晶粒子的冰云光学性质参数化方案的基础上,详细分析了不同冰晶粒子权重选取对冰云光学和辐射特性的影响。结果显示,不同形状冰晶粒子权重的选取对长波带平均消光系数、单次散射比、不对称因子和短波带平均不对称因子均有较大的影响。冰晶粒子权重选取对长波辐射通量有很大影响:对长波向下辐射通量,权重选择不同可在云底处造成高达10.50 W/m2的差别;对长波向上辐射通量,权重选择不同可在云顶处造成高达15.05 W/m2的差别。冰晶粒子权重选择对短波辐射通量也存在较大影响:对短波向下辐射通量,权重选择不同可在云底处造成高达12.48 W/m2的差别;对短波向上辐射通量,权重选择不同可在云顶处造成高达10.23 W/m2的差别。冰晶粒子权重选择对长波加热率影响较大,在云顶处和云底处分别可达1.31和-2.06 K/d。研究表明,不同形状冰晶粒子权重的选取对冰云光学性质和辐射计算均有较大的影响,在长波区间尤其明显。   相似文献

针对冰盖的定向地球工程研究旨在增强冰盖稳定性和减缓冰盖物质流失,从源头上减少冰盖对海平面上升的贡献,有望为应对气候变化和保护海岸线争取几百年的时间。冰盖地球工程主要作用在冰底和冰架-海洋界面上,主要途径如下:(1)排干或冻结冰盖底部水来干燥冰床,增强冰盖底部摩擦力;(2)在海洋中建造人造岛来支撑漂浮的冰架;(3)在冰架前端建造水下隔离墙,阻止温暖的海水到达冰川底部以减缓其融化。冰盖地球工程包括数值模拟、方案设计、工程试验和政治法律等诸多方面的研究。国际上的研究团队正在开展数值模拟和方案设计方面的研究,工程试验和政治法律等方面的研究尚未起步。预计工程试验的难度阶梯很可能是从实验室试验开始,到小尺度的野外试验,接着到格陵兰冰盖的入海冰川,最后到南极冰盖的入海冰川。针对冰盖的定向地球工程研究很有可能成为21世纪全球变化领域新兴的研究方向。  相似文献

The future evolution of global ice sheets under anthropogenic greenhouse forcing and its impact on the climate system, including the regional climate of the ice sheets, are investigated with a comprehensive earth system model consisting of a coupled Atmosphere–Ocean General Circulation Model, a dynamic vegetation model and an ice sheet model. The simulated control climate is realistic enough to permit a direct coupling of the atmosphere and ice sheet components, avoiding the use of anomaly coupling, which represents a strong improvement with respect to previous modelling studies. Glacier ablation is calculated with an energy-balance scheme, a more physical approach than the commonly used degree-day method. Modifications of glacier mask, topographic height and freshwater fluxes by the ice sheets influence the atmosphere and ocean via dynamical and thermodynamical processes. Several simulations under idealized scenarios of greenhouse forcing have been performed, where the atmospheric carbon dioxide stabilizes at two and four times pre-industrial levels. The evolution of the climate system and the ice sheets in the simulations with interactive ice sheets is compared with the simulations with passively coupled ice sheets. For a four-times CO2 scenario forcing, a faster decay rate of the Greenland ice sheet is found in the non-interactive case, where melting rates are higher. This is caused by overestimation of the increase in near-surface temperature that follows the reduction in topographic height. In areas close to retreating margins, melting rates are stronger in the interactive case, due to changes in local albedo. Our results call for careful consideration of the feedbacks operating between ice sheets and climate after substantial decay of the ice sheets.  相似文献

极地海冰是地球气候系统的重要组成部分,也是气候环境变化的指示器和放大器。极地海冰复杂的多尺度物理过程和极地观测资料的匮乏,给海冰模式的研发带来了巨大的挑战。在过去的半个多世纪中,大气-海冰-海洋的复杂相互作用和冰内物理过程在海冰模式中的数学描述取得了重大的进展,但海冰模式对一些重要物理过程的描述仍很不完善,尤其是近年来极地海冰的快速变化及其物理特性的变化,极大地增加了海冰模式物理参数化方案和模拟结果的不确定性。因此,迫切需要具备完善物理过程、适应海冰多尺度快速变化的高分辨率海冰模式,并应用于全球气候变化的研究和预测以及极地的开发利用。本文从海冰模式的发展历程和现状、极地海冰快速变化给海冰模式带来的挑战以及适应极地快速变化海冰模式的改进和发展研究方向三个方面进行了阐述和讨论。  相似文献

The diffraction angular distributions are calculated for different ice crystals (e.g,solid and hollow hexagonal columns,solid plates and single hexagonal bullet) randomly oriented in space,based on the theory of Cai and Liou.Results of solid column and plate are compared with those from formulas of Wendling et al and Liou.The resull comparison shows that all three procedures discussed in this paper have good agreement.After considering the coin putation time and comparison results,it is suggested that the formula of Wendling et al.can be used to calculate the solid column diffraction,and the formula of Liou can be used to calculate the plate diffraction.The comparison also shows that the diffraction results of solid columu,hollow column and single bullet ice particles randomly oriented in space are very close.  相似文献

 The effect of a snow cover on sea ice accretion and ablation is estimated based on the ‘zero-layer’ version sea ice model of Semtner, and is examined using a coupled atmosphere-sea ice model including feedbacks and ice dynamics effects. When snow is disregarded in the coupled model the averaged Antarctic sea ice becomes thicker. When only half of the snowfall predicted by the atmospheric model is allowed to land on the ice surface sea ice gets thicker in most of the Weddell and Ross Seas but thinner in East Antarctic in winter, with the average slightly thicker. When twice as much snowfall as predicted by the atmospheric model is assumed to land on the ice surface sea ice also gets much thicker due to the large increase of snow-ice formation. These results indicate the importance of the correct simulation of the snow cover over sea ice and snow-ice formation in the Antarctic. Our results also illustrate the complex feedback effects of the snow cover in global climate models. In this study we have also tested the use of a mean value of 0.16 Wm-1 K-1 instead of 0.31 for the thermal conductivity of snow in the coupled model, based on the most recent observations in the eastern Antarctic and Bellingshausen and Amundsen Seas, and have found that the sea ice distribution changes greatly, with the ice becoming much thinner by about 0.2 m in the Antarctic and about 0.4 m in the Arctic on average. This implies that the magnitude of the thermal conductivity of snow is of considerable importance for the simulation of the sea ice distribution. An appropriate value of the thermal conductivity of snow is as crucial as the depth of the snow layer and the snowfall rate in a sea ice model. The coupled climate models require accurate values of the effective thermal conductivity of snow from observations for validating the simulated sea ice distribution under the present climate conditions. Summary The wastage and accumulation rates of the global ice sheets are taken to be climatic parameters, responding to astronomical forcing, and the global ice volume to be the integral of the difference of these two rates. The particular form of the climatic response function is that it is proportional to the seasonality of irradiance totals. Taking the Fourier series of the ten major periodicities longer than ten millenia in the Berger formulation of the Milankovitch concept as the forcing function, analytical integration yields a time series that correlates about 0.51 with the ice volume reconstruction from oxygen isotopes for the past half million years, and matches the maxima and minima optimally. The integration process resolves part of the previous difficulty of ice volume spectra with too much power in the lowest frequencies.
Zusammenfassung Die Verlust- und Aufspeicherraten der globalen Eisdecke werden als klimatische Parameter angenommen, welche auf astronomische Einwirkung reagieren und das globale Eisvolumen als das Integral der Differenz dieser beiden Raten. Die spezielle Form der klimatischen Wirkfunktion ist so, daß sie proportional zur jahreszeitlich bedingten gesamten Strahlung ist. Nimmt man die Fourierreihe der zehn wichtigsten Perioden mit länger als zehn Jahrtausenden in der Bergerformulierung des Milankovitchkonzeptes als die bestimmende Funktion an, so ergibt die analytische Integration eine Zeitreihe, welche mit etwa 0,51 mit der Rekonstruktion des Eisvolumens aus den Sauerstoffisotopen der vergangenen halben Million Jahre korreliert und die Maxima und Minima optimal trifft. Das Integrationsverfahren löst Teile der frühen Schwierigkeit bei Eisvolumenspektren, die zu großes Gewicht auf die niedrigsten Frequenzen legten.

Numerical experiments with a hemispheric thermodynamic model are carried out, using present and ice age conditions. The computed surface temperatures for 18,000 years ago are in good agreement with the CLIMAP values. It is shown that the snow-ice cap that existed in the summer 18,000 years ago created a feedback mechanism which was responsible for perpetuating these ice age conditions. The increase of insolation due to orbital variations was responsible, at least in part, for the shrinkage of the snow-ice cap from 18,000 to 8,000 years ago. It is shown that the effect on the earth-atmosphere system of the changes in insolation due to the orbital variations depends on the preexisting snow-ice cap. It is significant for the ice cap that existed 18,000 years ago and insignificant for present conditions. The numerical experiments suggest that the evolution of climate depends in an important way on the initial snow-ice conditions. Therefore, according to the model the problem of simulating the evolution of climate is not determined if one does not prescribe these snow-ice conditions. Variation of vertical profiles of sea ice temperature and adjacent atmosphere and ocean temperatures were measured by ice drifting buoys deployed in the northeast Chukchi Sea as part of the 2003 Chinese Arctic Research Expedition.The buoy observations (September 2003 to February 2005) show that the cooling of the ice began in late September,propagated down through the ice,reaching the bottom of the ice in December,and continued throughout the winter.In winter 2003/04,some obvious warmings were observed in the upper portion of the ice in response to major warmings in the overlying atmosphere associated with the periodicity of storms in the northeast Chukchi Sea.It is found that the melt season at the buoy site in 2004 was about 15% longer than normal.The buoy observed vertical ice temperature profiles were used as a diagnostic for sea ice model evaluation.The results show that the simulated ice temperature profiles have large discrepancies as compared with the observations.  相似文献

Theoretical and experimental studies of ultra-high-frequency (UHF) and microwave radiometry to sense remotely the thickness and other characteristics of low-salinity (less than one per mille) sea ice are described. The experimental studies used a 600-MHz and a multichannel, multibeam, 4.7-GHz radiometer carried by a helicopter to measure the brightness temperature of different types of sea ice in the Gulf of Bothnia in 1975 and 1976.The developed theory and experiments show that the brightness temperature of low-salinity sea ice oscillates as a function of ice thickness at UHF frequencies. Due to higher attenuation, the oscillations quickly die away at 4.7 GHz and the brightness temperature reaches an almost constant value when the thickness exceeds a few decimetres. By using a three-channel UHF radiometer with suitably selected center frequencies, the oscillations can be reduced and the effective brightness temperature will grow more linearly with the ice thickness.Experiments show that ice ridges appear as thick ice at 600 MHz and as thinner ice at 4.7 GHz, thus allowing them to be detected by radio techniques.  相似文献

Summary A three-dimensional cloud model derived from the Klemp-Wilhelmson model has been used to perform simulations of a right-moving supercell with the purpose of testing the effects of terminal velocity of precipitation on the storm dynamics. The model has no ice variables and computes a fall velocity for condensed water. We simulate one of the effects of ice presence, without including phase transition, by reducing the fall velocity of the precipitation in the coldest cloud layers. The reduction of precipitation terminal velocity is shown to have a strong influence on supercell dynamics and to be responsible for nearly all the improvements in the simulation of supercells that are obtained with full ice microphysics. This includes the transition to tornadic phase, which is sharper than in the case of a pure rain supercell. The vertical component of vorticity is seen to increase at all levels, as observed in real storms, instead of just at the surface as is common in simulations with no ice phase.Our results indicate the primary importance of terminal fall speed among the effects due to the presence of ice.With 13 Figures  相似文献
