We studied the influence of the characteristics of the atmospheric ionization and physical-chemical state of condensation nuclei on the electric state of convective cells. Based on the results of experiments in an adiabatic chamber with a volume of 3200 m3, we found that, with increase in relative air humidity H from 40 to 95% with an equivalent ascent rate of 100–400 cm/s, excessive charges in amounts of about 103 or more elementary charges per cm3 may be accumulated on the nuclei. The sign of the charge depends on the chemical composition of the hygroscopic nuclei. For instance, media with insoluble nuclei (porous silica, etc.) typically have prevailing negative charges; those with soluble nuclei (sodium chloride, etc.) are dominated by positive charges. At H = 60−90%, the electrization of soluble nuclei can be interpreted in the diffusion-kinetic models of the ion charging of aerosols. Considerable negative volume charges, which appear on insoluble hygroscopic nuclei during a rise in humidity from 40 to 70%, are explained by the structuring of surface water films, which exhibit a resemblance to negative lightweight ions. At high values (H > 90%), it is necessary to take into account the resemblance of the wetted surfaces to positive lightweight ions. We showed for the first time that, at ion formation rates of 3 and 1010 ion pairs/(cm3 s), the differences in the volume charge and wetting rate of condensation nuclei are insignificant. It is concluded that, in many meteorological situations, the first stage of electrization of the convection-derived cloud media is the ion charging of the condensation nuclei.  相似文献

Profiles of particulate and dissolved 234Th (t1/2=24.1 days) in seawater and particulate 234Th collected in drifting traps were analyzed in the Barents Sea at five stations during the ALV3 cruise (from June 28 to July 12, 1999) along a transect from 78°15′N–34°09′E to 73°49′N–31°43′E. 234Th/238U disequilibrium was observed at all locations. 234Th data measured in suspended and trapped particles were used to calibrate the catchment efficiency of the sediment traps. Model-derived 234Th fluxes were similar to 234Th fluxes measured in sediment traps based on a steady-state 234Th model. This suggests that the sediment traps were not subject to large trapping efficiency problems (collection efficiency ranges from 70% to 100% for four traps). The export flux of particulate organic carbon (POC) can be calculated from the model-derived export flux of 234Th and the POC/234Th ratio. POC/234Th ratios measured in suspended and trapped particles were very different (52.0±9.9 and 5.3±2.2 μmol dpm−1, respectively). The agreement between calculated and measured POC fluxes when the POC/234Th ratio of trapped particles was used confirms that the POC/234Th ratio in trap particles is representative of sinking particles. Large discrepancies were observed between calculated and measured POC fluxes when the POC/234Th ratio of suspended particles was used. In the Barents Sea, vertical POC fluxes are higher than POC fluxes estimated in the central Arctic Ocean and the Beaufort Sea and lower than those calculated in the Northeast Water Polynya and the Chukchi Sea. We suggest that the latter fluxes may have been strongly overestimated, because they were based on high POC/234Th ratios measured on suspended particles. It seems that POC fluxes cannot be reliably derived from thorium budgets without measuring the POC/234Th ratio of sediment trap material or of large filtered particles.  相似文献

The results of a numerical simulation of the action of hygroscopic particles on a warm convective cloud with the purpose of obtaining additional precipitation are presented. The one-dimensional numerical model considered in this work describes the evolution of the cloud medium in the central part of an axisymmetric convective cloud at the specified height-variable velocity of the upward air flow which forms the cloud. Our model comprehensively describes microphysical processes in the cloud medium with the use of the kinetic equation for the size distribution of cloud droplets. This model makes it possible to obtain the spatiotemporal pattern of the cloud formation and development and to analyze regular features in the cloud evolution under the action of hygroscopic reagents. The cloud characteristics calculated with the use of this model correspond to the cloud parameters observed in natural conditions of the atmosphere. The process of precipitation stimulation by hygroscopic particles in convective clouds with vertical thicknesses of 2.5–4.5 km was analyzed on the basis of the results of numerical calculations. The results of calculations of the dependence of the intensity and total amount of precipitation on the vertical cloud thickness and parameters of particles introduced into the cloud are presented. It is shown that hygroscopic particles with root-mean-cube radii of 1–1.5 μm are the most effective for acting on warm convective clouds with the purpose of obtaining additional precipitation. In this case, the required reagent expenditure is 100–200 kg/km2. The conditions necessary for obtaining the maximal positive effect of the action are elucidated.  相似文献

为探讨潮沼植物对动力沉积过程的影响,在长江口南汇东滩沼泽和邻近的光滩上进行了近底层流速、波浪、悬沙浓度、沉积物粒径和滩面淤积速率等对比实验,并在九段沙潮沼中做了两种先锋植物黏附悬沙的实验.结果表明,沼泽和同高程的邻近光滩近底层平均流速的比值为0.16~0.84;两种环境平均波周期、平均波高和平均悬沙浓度的比值分别为1.4,0.43,和0.71.波浪传入沼泽后,一方面波高大大降低,另一方面变得规则有序.海三棱草和草两种先锋植物群落黏附的悬沙分别达到298和40g/m2.由于水动力降低和植物的捕沙功能,细颗粒泥沙易于在沼泽中沉积下来,导致沼泽环境沉积物明显较相邻光滩细;沼泽中沉积速率加快,侵蚀受到抑制.  相似文献

The downward flux of Mn through the water column was directly measured using sediment traps. The Mn flux from the bottom sediment to the water column, and the removal rate of Mn in the bottom water were estimated from Mn gradients in the bottom water. The sediment traps were deployed more than ten times at the same station in Funka Bay, Japan. The trapped settling matter and filtered suspended matter samples were analyzed for Mn, Fe, Al and ignition loss. The observed downward flux of Mn through the water column in winter (1.3–2.8 μg/cm2 /day) was generally an order of magnitude larger than that in summer (0.13–0.45 μg/cm2 /day), and the Mn fluxes for both seasons were also greater than the accumulation rate of Mn in the bottom sediments (0.10 μg/cm 2/day). More Al was contained in the trapped settling matter than in the suspended matter, while Mn showed the opposite behavior. The Fe/Mn ratio of the residual fraction (obtained by subtracting the sediment component of the settling matter) was rather well correlated with the corresponding ratio in suspended matter. Settling particles are expected to scavenge suspended matter during their passage through the water column. The flux of Mn across the sediment—water interface was estimated from its vertical profiles in the water column to be 0.1–0.3 μg/cm2 day. The residence time of Mn in bottom water was about one to several months. These results suggest that Mn is actively recycled between the water column and the sediments of the coastal sea.  相似文献

Sand transport rates were measured via bedload traps that were inserted into the sediment surface on the continental shelf southwest of England. Analysis of the trapped mobile sediment shows this to be finer and better sorted than nearby Shipek grab samples. The transport rates are combined with simultaneous, near-bed flow measurements to assess a Bagnold type predictive equation,j = k 1(u 2 100 -u 2 100cr)u 100. The measured transport rates vary between 0.41 × 10–3 and 1.67 × 10–3 gm/cm s. The data yield a mean calibration coefficient (k 1) of 0.4 × 10–6 which is slightly lower than values computed from flume and shallow water data.  相似文献

Stoichiometric association constants, which have been measured for the ion pairs of Cl? and SO4?2 with Na+, K+, Mg2+, and Ca2+, were used to determine the speciation in an artificial sea water containing only these ions. The resulting distribution is quite different to that found in earlier models in which chloride ion association was ignored. The concentrations of chloride ion pairs with the cations are 4 to 5 times larger than the concentrations of the sulphate ion pairs with the same cations. The total activity coefficients of the neutral salts in sea water calculated from the model are in good agreement with the experimentally measured values. The concentration of MgSO40 calculated to be present agrees with the amount determined from ultrasonic absorption data. The calculated solubility of gypsum is also in good agreement with the measured values.  相似文献

It is shown that the values of the diffusion coefficient of MgSO40 ion pairs computed by Harned and Hudson (J. Am. Chem. Soc., 73: 5880, 1951) and Katz and Ben-Yaakov (Mar. Chem., 8: 263, 1980) are too high by a factor of 2. The correct value of the ion pair diffusion coefficient at infinite dilution was obtained from the measured mutual diffusion coefficient after applying corrections for incomplete dissociation, the electrophoretic effect, the viscosity of the solution and the effect of chloride ion pairs (in the ionic media used during measurements of the stoichiometric association constant of MgSO40 ion pairs). The MgSO40 diffusion coefficient is calculated to be 0.65 × 10?5 cm28?1. The result is independent of the concentration up to a value of 0.8 mol dm?3.Values were also calculated for the diffusion coefficients of the following ion pairs: NaSO4? (0.81 × 10?5), CaCl+ (0.78 × 10?5), BaCl+ (0.85 × 10?5), NaCl0 (0.86 × 10?5), KCl0 (1.09 × 10?5), NH4Cl0 (1.10 × 10?5) and CaCl0 (1.27 × 10?5). In general, the diffusion coefficients are less than those of the free ions. The results show quantitative agreement with theoretical predictions.  相似文献

General characteristics of topographically trapped subinertia waves are discussed from the viewpoint of an eigenvalue problem and ray theory. Special attention is paid to the slope parameterS(x) (=(dh/dx)/h, wherex denotes the coordinate perpendicular to the shoreline, increasing seaward, andh(x) is the depth) which is a measure of the strength of the restoring force of the waves. Three cases for theS distribution are considered, in whichS is assumed to be positive at the coast and to tend to zero far from the coast. The first is whereS(x) decreases monotonically towards the open ocean. It is found in this case that waves are trapped near the coast. The second is whereS(x) does not decrease monotonically, but has a maximum. It is concluded that this case may contain two types of waves, i.e., those trapped near the coast and those trapped near the maximum, and the dispersion curves corresponding to different types may nearly intersect, namely, result in “kissing”. The third is whereS(x) has a negative region (corresponding to the presence of a trench). It is found in this case that an infinite sequence of waves is trapped in the negativeS region which propagate with the coast to their left (right) in the northern (southern) hemisphere besides the waves trapped near the coast. The topography in the second case corresponds to a typical continental shelf and a typical continental slope. It is shown by model calculation that trapped waves are present over the continental slope as well as over the continental shelf. Almost the same results are obtained for superinertia waves ifS is replaced by 1/h which is a measure of the restoring force of superinertia waves.  相似文献

The method and results of radar researches of vertically and volumetric integrated water content in powerful cumulonimbus (Cb) clouds obtained for the first time are considered. It is established that in hailstorms of Northern Caucasus vertically integrated liquid (VIL) water content varies in limits from 8 up to 50 kg/m2, in shower clouds—from 0.5 up to 12 kg/m2, in Nimbostratus (Ns) clouds—it is usual less than 0.5 kg/m2 and in clouds with a drizzle—less than 0.05 kg/m2. The main water content of hailstorms in a stage of development is concentrated in their supercooled layer, in a maturity stage—in a layer from the ground up to height 8–10 km and in a stage of dissipation—in a ground layer. The ratio of VIL of the supercooled and warm parts of cloud allows estimating hail dangers of clouds and stage of their development. It is shown that the volume of hailstorms varies in limits from 103 up to 5 × 104 km3 and their volumetric integrated mass (VIM) of water content — from 105 up to 6 × 106 tons. The volume of hail localization seldom exceeds 5–25% from total cloud volume, but its contribution to VIM achieves 30–60%. Speed of precipitation formation in powerful hailstorms achieves 1 × 104−5 × 105 tons/min and the same order of value has speed of recession of VIM in their stage of dissipation.  相似文献

A simple, yet efficient and fairly accurate algorithm is presented to estimate photosynthetically available radiation (PAR) at the ocean surface from Global Imager (GLI) data. The algorithm utilizes plane-parallel radiation-transfer theory and separates the effects of the clear atmosphere and clouds, i.e., the planetary atmosphere is modeled as a clear atmosphere positioned above a cloud layer. PAR is computed as the difference between the incident 400–700 nm solar flux at the top of the atmosphere (known) and the solar flux reflected back to space by the atmosphere and surface (derived from GLI radiance), taking atmospheric absorption into account. Knowledge of pixel composition is not required, eliminating the need for cloud screening and arbitrary assumptions about sub-pixel cloudiness. For each GLI pixel, clear or cloudy, a daily PAR estimate is obtained. Diurnal changes in cloudiness are taken into account statistically, using a regional diurnal albedo climatology based on 5 years of Earth Radiation Budget Satellite (ERBS) data. The algorithm results are verified against other satellite estimates of PAR, the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) reanalysis product, and in-situ measurements from fixed buoys. Agreement is generally good between GLI and Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) estimates, with root-mean-squared (rms) differences of 7.9 (22%), 4.6 (13%), and 2.7 (8%) Einstein/m2/day on daily, weekly, and monthly time scales, and a bias of only 0.8–0.9 (about 2%) Einstein/m2/day. The rms differences between GLI and Visible and Infrared Spin Scan Radiometer (VISSR) estimates and between GLI and NCEP estimates are smaller and larger, respectively, on monthly time scales, i.e., 3.0 (7%) and 5.0 (14%) Einstein/m2/day, and biases are 1.1 (2%) and −0.2 (−1%) Einstein/m2/day. The comparison with buoy data also shows good agreement, with rms inaccuracies of 10.2 (23%), 6.3 (14%), and 4.5 (10%) Einstein/m2/day on daily, weekly, and monthly time scales, and slightly higher GLI values by about 1.0 (2%) Einstein/m2/day. The good statistical performance makes the algorithm suitable for large-scale studies of aquatic photosynthesis.  相似文献

We study the absorption of infrasonic waves when they are propagating in cloud media. In this case, the main mechanism of absorption is the relaxation processes associated with vapor-drop phase transitions caused by infrasonic waves. For frequencies comparable to the inverse relaxation time, the acoustic waves in a cloud medium were shown to have a noticeable dispersion. We derive an expression for the frequency-dependent effective adiabatic index linking the oscillations of pressure and density in the wave, the dispersion equation, and the expression for the absorption coefficient. For typical values of cloud parameters, the absorption coefficient was estimated to be around 0.1 km?1. We discuss observation data which indirectly confirm that clouds can considerably absorb infrasonic waves.  相似文献

A theoretical evaluation of basic thermodynamic relationships reveals that variation of activity coefficients, ion pairing and electrical interactions must be considered when modelling ionic diffusion in seawater. The contributions of ion-pair formation and change in activity coefficient along the diffusion path were studied experimentally by conducting diffusion experiments in which solutions of KCl, NaCl, MgCl2, Li2SO4, K2SO4, Na2SO4 and MgSO4, at an ionic strength of 0.7, were allowed to diffuse into distilled water. The study reveals that the thermodynamic factor, required to correct for changes in the activity coefficient along the diffusion path, is significant for all the salts studied. Agreement between a simple diffusion model, which does not include ion pairing, and observed data was good for completely dissociated salts, but poor for salts which are known to form ion pairs at the concentration levels studied. The diffusion of MgSO4, 0.425 of which is associated at I = 0.7, was successfully modelled by assuming that the diffusion coefficient of the MgSO40 ion pair is different from the diffusion coefficient of the dissociated salt. The diffusion coefficient of this ion pair is estimated to be 1.9 × 10−5 cm2 s−1 at 30°C, as compared to 0.49 × 10−5 cm2 s−1 for the dissociated salt. It is suggested that the high mobility of this ion pair could cause magnesium enrichment in pore water of sulfate depleted sediments.  相似文献

Abstract-In this paper, the monthly averages and deviations of temperature, pressure, tonal wind, specific humidity, cloud rover and the components of heat budget have been remputed on the equatorial (5°S-3°N) Pacific surface (EPS) based on the 2*×2* grid data of CORDS from 1950 to 1987 and the evolutions of tt0ese elements have been provided. Two feedback mechanisms of El Nino-La Nina cycle which include the dynamic, thermal and hydrological processes in the coupled air-sea system are verified. During El Nino, the pressure gradient and trade wind decreased on the EPS, the sensible and latent heat exchanges enlarged on the central-eastern EPS, the water vapor and cloud cover rose in the atmo sphere, the net longwave radiation and incident solar radiation decreased and the net gain (loss) of the heat reduced (increased) on the central and eastern EPS:During La Nina the circumstances were opposite  相似文献

Reef researchers studying community shifts in the balance between corals and fleshy macroalgae have noted that algae are often covered with sediment. This study characterizes sediment trapping by macroalgae within a Hawaiian reef habitat and constrains the controls on this process. Sediment-laden macroalgae were sampled and macroalgal cover was assessed on a wide (∼1 km) reef flat off south-central Molokai. Macroalgae trapped a mean of 1.26 (±0.91 SD) grams of sediment per gram of dry weight biomass and that sediment was dominantly terrigenous mud (59% by weight). It was determined that biomass, as a proxy for algal size, and morphology were not strict controls on the sediment trapping process. Over 300 metric tons of sediment were estimated to be retained by macroalgae across 5.75 km2 of reef flat (54 g m−2), suggesting that this process is an important component of sediment budgets. In addition, understanding the character of sediment trapped by macroalgae may help constrain suspended sediment flux and has implications for nutrient dynamics in reef flat environments.  相似文献

The spreading of water of Mediterranean origin west of the Iberian Peninsula was studied with hydrographic data from several recent cruises and current measurements from the BORD-EST programme. The vertical breakdown of the “Mediterranean salt” content reveals the dominant contribution of the so-called lower core of the outflow (60%), and the significant fraction (22%) brought downward to levels below 1500 m by diffusion. Intense salinity maxima in the upper core (18%) are only encountered south of 38°N in the vein flowing northward along the continental slope, and at a few stations in the deep ocean. Apart from the coastally trapped vein, other preferred paths of the water mass are revealed by the horizontal distributions of salinity maximum and Mediterranean Water percentage. One is southward, west of the Gorringe Bank, and two northwestward ones lie around 40°N and west of the Galicia Bank. Year-long velocity measurements in the Tagus Basin show westward mean values of 7 × 10−2 m s−1 at 1000 m associated with a very intense mesoscale variability. This variability is related to the pronounced dynamical signature of the outflow which favours instability in any branch having detached from the slope current. From a mixing point of view, the strong interleaving activity occurring near Cape St-Vincent is illustrated, but its contribution to the downstream salinity decrease in the coastally trapped vein is weak. Current and meddy detachment play the dominant role, with a scaling estimate of their associated lateral diffusivity of order 500 m2 s−1. The statistical distribution of the density ratio parameter, which governs double-diffusion at the base of the Mediterranean Water, was found to be very tight around Rπ = 1.3 in the temperature range of 5°C< φ < 8°C. North of 40°N, the presence of a fraction of Labrador Sea Water in the underlying water is shown to decrease that parameter and should favour the formation of salt fingers.  相似文献

TOPEX/POSEIDON altimeter data are analyzed for the 8.5-year period November 1992 to May 2001 to investigate the sea surface height (SSH) and geostrophic velocity signatures of quasi-annual equatorially trapped Rossby waves in the Pacific. The latitudinal structures of SSH and both components of geostrophic velocity are found to be asymmetric about the equator across the entire Pacific with larger amplitude north of the equator. The westward phase speeds are estimated by several different methods to be in the range 0.5-0.6 m s−1. These observed characteristics are inconsistent with the classical theory for first vertical, first meridional mode equatorially trapped Rossby waves, which predicts a phase speed of about 0.9 m s−1 with latitudinally symmetric structures of SSH and zonal velocity and antisymmetric structure of meridional velocity. The observations are even less consistent with the latitudinal structures of SSH and geostrophic velocity components for other modes of the classical theory.The latitudinal asymmetries deduced here have also been consistently observed in past analyses of subsurface thermal data and altimeter data and have been variously attributed to sampling errors in the observational data, a superposition of multiple meridional Rossby wave modes, asymmetric forcing by the wind, and forcing by cross-equatorial southerly winds in the eastern Pacific. We propose a different mechanism to account for the observed asymmetric latitudinal structure of low-frequency equatorial Rossby waves. From the free-wave solutions of a simple 1.5-layer model, it is shown that meridional shears in the mean equatorial current system significantly alter the potential vorticity gradient in the central and eastern tropical Pacific. The observed asymmetric structures of sea surface height and geostrophic velocity components are found to be a natural consequence of the shear modification of the potential vorticity gradient. The mean currents also reduce the predicted westward phase speed of first meridional mode Rossby waves, improving consistency with the observations.  相似文献

The conditional stability constant of HSO4? has been determined at 25°C, 1 atm and a formal ionic strength of 0.7 M in solutions containing sodium, magnesium, chloride and sulphate. This was done spectrophotometrically (UV), using diphenylamine as indicator. The value obtained was 17.0 ± 0.1 (molar scale). Single ion activity coefficients for Na2SO4, K2SO4 and MgSO4 have been calculated according to the Bates et al. (1970) model, assuming that the sulphate ion is not hydrated. It was found that the single ion activity coefficient of sulphate changes very little between Na2SO4, K2SO4 and MgSO4 when the formal ionic strength is kept constant.These results have been used to obtain relations between the stability constants of NaSO4? and MgSO4 valid for seawater.  相似文献
