Numerical simulation of oblique water entry of an asymmetrical wedge
G.D. Xu G.X. Wu 《Ocean Engineering》2008,35(16):1597-1603
The hydrodynamic problem of a two-dimensional asymmetrical wedge entering calm water obliquely at constant speed is analyzed based on the velocity potential theory. The gravity effect on the flow is ignored based on the assumption that the ratio of the entry speed to the acceleration due to gravity is much larger than the time scale of interest. The problem of this similarity flow is solved by a boundary element method together with an analytical solution for the jet based on the shallow water approximation. Various results are provided for the wave elevation, pressure distribution and force at different deadrise angles and at different oblique entry. The effects of asymmetry and horizontal speed on these results are investigated.

The aim of the paper is to provide an experimental reference for investigation of asymmetric water entry of wedges. Parameters of the study include initial deadrise angle, inclination angle and impact speed. Initial deadrise angles of the wedges were 20° and 30° with inclination angles ranging from 0° to 15° in 5° increments. Wedges were freely fallen from three different heights. Time histories of impact pressure and body acceleration were recorded. Sampling rate of measurements were set to 25 KHz. Main configuration of each test including mass of the wedge and water level were kept unchanged during all experiments. Additionally, several calibration tests were conducted to assess the repeatability and accuracy of the recorded data. The experimental results are compared with different entry theories and other available experiments. The comparison shows a reasonable agreement and indicates that the inclination angle can dramatically affect the impact pressure experienced by the wedges. Finally, the results show that the traditional asymmetric theories are not appropriate for all inclination angles.

In this paper, theoretical models are developed and numerical methods are used to analyze the loads, motions and cavity dynamics for freefall wedges with different deadrise angles vertically entering the water surface at Froude numbers: 1 Fn < 9. The time evolutions of the penetration depth, the velocity and the acceleration are analyzed and expressed explicitly. The maximum and average accelerations are predicted. The theoretical results are compared with numerical data obtained through a single-fluid BEM model with globally satisfactory agreement. The evolution of the pressures on the impact side is investigated. Before flow separation, gravity and the acceleration of the wedge have negligible influence on the pressure on the impact side for large Froude numbers or small deadrise angles; with increasing the deadrise angle or decreasing Froude number, the effects of gravity and the acceleration of the wedge tend to become more important. Global loads, with the main emphasis on the drag coefficient, are also studied. It is found that for the light wedge, the transient drag coefficient has slow variation in the first half of the collapse stage and rapid variation in the last half of the collapse stage. For the heavy wedge, the transient drag coefficients vary slowly during the whole collapse stage and can be treated as constant. The characteristics of the transient cavity during its formation are investigated. The non-dimensional pinch-off time, pinch-off depth and submergence depth at pinch-off scale roughly linearly as the Froude number.

A boundary element method is developed for calculating the flare ship hull slammingproblem. The nonlinear free surface elevation and the linear element assumption are employed. The meth-od has been verified by comparisons with results for the water entry of wedges with various deadriseangles.Numerical results show that the pressure distribution varies greatly with the ship hull with differentcurvilinear equations, and the slamming features are also different. From the numerical simulation, the au-thors found that the structural damage of the flare hull might be caused by the increasing hydrodynamicpressure over an extensive area on the flare when the upper part of the flare comes into contact with water.

The geomembrane tubes have been widely used for flood barriers, cofferdams, and breakwaters. To prevent the geomembrane tubes from rolling off or slipping along the ground, the simplest method is to place wedges on their downstream side. The numerical analyses using PFC2D are conducted in this paper to investigate the performance of the geomembrane tubes supported by two types of wedges, named as triangle and fillet wedges. Comparing to the triangle wedge, the fillet wedge reduces 10% of force concentration at the contact point between the geomembrane tube and the top angle. Nondimensional parameters are adopted in the numerical analyses to make the conclusions suitable for the general cases. It is found from the studies that the optimum wedge height to support the geomembrane tubes is 0.12L without depending on the initial pumping pressure nor the wedge types. The initial filling pumping pressure p0 of 0.162γwL and the wedge height hg of 0.15L are suggested to design the system which could extremely sustain external water level of 0.316L.

The forced constant acceleration exit of two-dimensional bodies through a free-surface is computed for various 2D bodies (symmetric wedges, asymmetric wedges, truncated wedges and boxes). The calculations are based on the fully non-linear time-stepping complex-variable method of Vinje and Brevig (1981). The model was formulated as an initial boundary-value problem (IBVP) with boundary conditions specified on the boundaries (dynamic and kinematic free-surface boundary conditions) and initial conditions at time zero (initial velocity and position of the body and free-surface particles). The formulated problem was solved by means of a boundary-element method using collocation points on the boundary of the domain and stepped forward in time using Runge–Kutta and Hamming predictor–corrector methods. Numerical results for the deformed free-surface profile, pressure along the wetted region of the bodies and force experienced by the bodies are given for the exit. The analytical added-mass force is presented for the exit of symmetric wedges and boxes with constant acceleration using conformal mappings. To verify the numerical results, the added-mass force and the numerical force are compared and give good agreement for the exit of a symmetric wedge at a time zero (t = 0) as expected but only moderate agreement for the box.

A two-dimensional finite wedge entering water obliquely in freefall with three degrees of freedom is considered through the velocity potential theory for the incompressible liquid. The problem is solved by using the boundary element method in the time domain. The scheme of the stretched coordinate system is adopted at the initial stages when only a small part of the wedge near its tip has entered water. The auxiliary function method is adopted to decouple the nonlinear mutual dependence between the body motions in three degrees of freedom and the fluid flow. When the liquid has detached from the knuckle of the wedge, the free jet is treated through the momentum equation. The developed method is verified through existing results for one degree of freedom in vertical motion. Various case studies are undertaken for a wedge entering water vertically, obliquely and with rotational angles. Results are provided the accelerations, velocities, pressure distribution and free surface deformation, and the physical implications are discussed.

The problem of a two-dimensional finite-width wedge entering water near a freely floating body is considered through the velocity potential theory for the incompressible liquid with the fully nonlinear boundary conditions on the free surface. The problem is solved by using the boundary element method in the time domain. The numerical process is divided into two phases based on whether the interaction between the wedge and floating body is significant. In the first phase, when the single wedge enters water at initial stage, only a small part near its tip is in the fluid, the problem is studied in a stretched coordinate system and the presence of the floating body has no major effect. In the second phase, the disturbance by water entry of the wedge has reached the floating body, and both are considered together in the physical system. The auxiliary function method is adopted to decouple the nonlinear mutual dependence between the motions of the wedge and floating body, both in three degrees of freedom, and the fluid flow, as well as the interaction effects between them. Case studies are undertaken for a wedge entering water in forced or free fall motion, vertically or obliquely. Results are provided for the accelerations, velocities, pressure distribution and free surface deformation, and the interaction effects are discussed.

The effect of the asymmetric water entry over a submerged part of a ship on the hydredynamic impact is investigated numerically. A wedge hotly is considered and the problem is assumed to be two-dimensional. The results of symmetric and asymmetric impacts are compared. The effect is found significant in the numerical simulation. The maximum hydrodynamic pressure at a heel angle of 10 degrees becomes about 95% more than that of the symmetric entry. The result of the present work proves the importance of asymmetrical hydrodynamic impact loading for structural design of a ship. Besides, the numerical procedure is not limited to a wedge type cross section and it is possible to apply it for any real geometry of ships and high-speed craft.

Reverse tip jets are strong low-level winds with easterly component that form near the southern tip of Greenland. In the present study, a reverse tip jet case which occurred from 21 to 22 December 2000 was examined to clarify its fine structure using a numerical model with a horizontal resolution of 3 km. The reverse tip jet, showing the supergeostrophic wind speed with a maximum wind speed in excess of 45 m s−1, extended from the east coast of Greenland to the west of Cape Farewell with anticyclonic curvature. A cloud free region coincided with the jet indicated that there was a mesoscale downdraft. Along the eastern edge of the jet, a banded cloud formed between the upstream easterly wind and the colder northerly wind that is a part of the jet and is located along the east coast. This cloud was associated with large gradients in surface wind speed, temperature, moisture, and heat flux. A maximum surface total heat flux of 300 W m−2 coincided with the location of the jet. It is suggested that the orographic deflection by Greenland's large-scale topography as well as small-scale downslope winds behind mountains with fiords causes the reverse tip jet.

Experiments and numerical methods are developed to investigate the water entry of a freefall wedge with a focus on the evolution of the pressure on the impact sides (the side contacting water) and the top side (the dry side on the top of the wedge), evolution of the global hydrodynamic loads, evolution of the air–water interface, and wedge motion. It is found that a typical water entry of a freefall wedge can be divided into slamming, transition, collapse and post-closure stages. A single-fluid numerical model is presented to simulate the first three stages. The results are compared to experiments and good agreements are obtained. A two-fluid BEM is proposed to investigate the influence of the air flow before the closure of the cavity created on the top of the wedge. It is found that for the closure of the 2D cavity, the air flow starts to play an important role just before closure but due to the short duration, the influence of air flow on the body velocity and configuration of the air–water interface is limited.

The hydrodynamic problem of a two dimensional wedge tank filled with liquid entering a calm water surface is analysed based on the incompressible velocity potential theory. The motion effect of inner liquid on the entry process is investigated through comparison with the result containing equivalent solid mass or the liquid being frozen. The problem is solved through the boundary element method in the time domain. Two separated computational regions are constructed. One is the inner domain for the internal liquid, and the other is the outer open domain for the open water. The former is solved in the physical coordinate system, and the latter is solved in a stretched coordinate system. The solutions of two separated domains are connected through the motion of the body. The auxiliary function method is extended to decouple the nonlinear mutual dependence between fluid loads from two separated domains and the body motion. Detailed results for wedge motion, external impact pressure and free surface, and for internal pressure, free surface deformation and liquid motion are provided. Through comparison with the results of a wedge tank with frozen ice, in-depth discussion on the effect of the inner liquid is provided.

The initial stage of plunging wave impact obliquely on coastal structures is analysed. The problem is modelled through an oblique collision of an asymmetrical water wedge and an asymmetrical solid wedge. The gravity effect on the flow is ignored based on the assumption that the ratio of the incoming speed of the wave to the acceleration due to gravity is much larger than the time scale of interest. Similarity solution method based on the velocity potential theory is then used. The problem of this similarity flow is solved by a boundary element method through the Cauchy theorem in the complex plan. Results for the wave elevation and pressure distribution are provided, including the forces and moments, effects of different impact angles and the effects of oblique impact are investigated. In particular, negative pressure near the tip of the solid wedge is observed and its implications are discussed.

It is common practice to compute wave-induced loads on the immersed surface of gravity structures exposed to the wave motion and disregard the pore-water pressure variation on the foundation surface. However, when the soil is porous, wave-induced pressures propagate within the soil under the structure and result in a rather significant contribution to overall loads. This paper describes a practical method for numerical modeling of the pore pressure under a gravity platform foundation for compressible water and a rigid, but porous soil. The porous soil may be bounded by an impermeable horizontal layer at some arbitrary depth.

The paper outlines the basic boundary element procedure for pore pressure analysis and presents numerical results for a typical gravity structure as well as results for comparison with an existing analytical solution for a vertical circular cylinder.

Coastal disposal of waste water can be idealized as the problem of a jet under random waves. Understanding of this phenomenon is important for engineering design and environmental impact assessment. The present study aims to simulate such phenomenon by using a 3D numerical model based on the solution of the spatially filtered and σ-transformed Navier–Stokes equations with dynamic sub-grid scale model of turbulence. The numerical solution procedures are split into three steps: advection, diffusion and pressure propagation, and a Lagrange–Euler method is used to track the free surface. Cases of vertical jet in stagnant water, pure random waves and vertical jet in random waves are simulated with the same grid system for comparative study. Different methods of generating jet inflow turbulence have been tested and the method of jet azimuthal modes is found to be the optimum. The numerical results reproduce the distinct characteristics of jet in waves, including faster decay of centerline velocity, wider lateral spreading and the occurrence of wave tractive mechanism.

A comprehensive numerical study on the three-dimensional structure of a turbulent jet in crossflow is performed. Thejet-to-crossflow velocity ratio (R) varies in the range of 2 ~ 16; both vertical jets and inclined jets without excess streamwisemomentum are considered. The numerical results of the standard two-equation k-~ model show that the turbulent structurecan be broadly categorised according to the jet-to-crossflow velocity ratio. For strong to moderate jet discharges, i.e. R >4, the jet is characterized by a longitudinal transition through a bent-over phase during which the jet becomes almost parallelwith the main freestream, to a sectional vortex-pair flow with double concentration maxima; the computed flow details andscalar mixing characteristics can be described by self-similar relations beyond a dimensionless distance of around 20 ~ 60.The similarity coefficients are only weakly dependent on R. The cross-section scalar field is kidney-shaped and bifurcated, with distinct double concentration maxima; the aspect ratio is found to be around 1.2. A loss in vertical momentum is ob-served and the added mass coefficient of the jet motion is found to be approximately 1. On the other hand, for weak jets instrong crossflow, i.e. R≤ 2, the lee of the jet is characterized by a negative pressure region. Although the double vortexflow can still be noted, the scalar field becomes more symmetrical and no longer bifurcated. The similarity coeffcients are al-so noticeably different. The predicted jet flow characteristics and mixing rates are well supported by experimental and field data
