The unsteady flow past a circular cylinder which starts translating and transversely oscillating from rest in a viscous fluid is investigated at a Reynolds numbers of R=103 and at a Strouhal number of π/4 and for the maximum oscillatory to translational velocity ratios between 0.1 and 1.0. This study is based on numerical solutions of the two-dimensional unsteady Navier–Stokes equations. The object of the study is to examine the effect of increase of velocity ratio on the near-wake structure as well as the hydrodynamic forces acting on the cylinder. For all velocity rates a periodic structure of vortex evaluation and shedding develops which is repeated exactly as time advances. Vortex dynamics close behind the body are affected by changing acceleration of the cylinder and a changeover from one mode to a different mode of vortex formation is observed with increase in velocity ratio. A comparison of the present results with the impulsively started translating case has been included to illustrate the effect of velocity ratio on drag at small values of velocity ratio.  相似文献

Vortex-excited oscillations of marine structures result in reduced fatigue life, large hydrodynamic forces and induced stresses, and sometimes lead to structural damage and to destructive failures. The cold water pipe of an Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) plant is nominally a bluff, flexible cylinder with a large aspect ratio (L/D = length/diameter), and is likely to be susceptible to resonant vortex-excited oscillations. The objective of this paper is to survey recent results pertaining to the vortex-excited oscillations of structures in general and to consider the application of these findings to the design of the OTEC cold water pipe. Practical design calculations are given as examples throughout the various sections of the report. This paper is limited in scope to the problems of vortex shedding from bluff, flexible structures in steady currents and the resulting vortex-excited oscillations. The effects of flow non-uniformities, surface roughness of the cylinder, and inclination to the incident flow are considered in addition to the case of a smooth cylinder in a uniform stream. Emphasis is placed upon design procedures, hydrodynamic coefficients applicable in practice, and the specification of structural response parameters relevant to the OTEC cold water pipe. There are important problems associated with the shedding of vortices from cylinders in waves and from the combined action of waves and currents, but these complex fluid/structure interactions are not considered in this paper.  相似文献

The problem of oscillating viscous flow over a stationary cylinder of elliptic cross-section is investigated. The free stream direction is horizontal and is always normal to the cylinder axis and oscillations are only allowed in the magnitude of the stream velocity. The flow is incompressible and two-dimensional and the free steam oscillations are harmonic. The elliptic cylinder considered has a major-minor axis ratio of 0.6 and is inclined to the free stream direction at angles of incidence of either 30 or 60°. The investigation is based on the solution of the time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations together with the mass conservation equation. The parameters involved are the cylinder axis ratio, angle of incidence, Reynolds number, and Strouhal number. The Reynolds number ranges between 102 and 103 and the Strouhal number ranges between π/4 and π/2. The time variation of the flow field is presented in the form of streamline patterns as well as surface vorticity distribution. The surface pressure distribution and the time variation of the in-line and transverse force coefficients are also presented and compared with an inviscid flow solution for the same problem. The comparison between viscous and inviscid flow results shows a better agreement for higher values of Reynolds and Strouhal numbers.  相似文献

Dynamic flows over bluff bodies are simulated with standard models based upon Reynolds equations (k,ε)-turbulence closure and equilibrium boundary conditions. The equations are integrated by finite volume techniques. The model is applied to time varying, transverse flow over a cylinder at a plane boundary and the flow around a truncated cylinder in longitudinal oscillations. Well-behaved, plausible predictions are obtained. Accelerating flow tends to be attached even around sharp corners. Decellerated flow is associated with detachment. Laboratory scale force data are predicted reasonably realistically, without model adjustments. However, the lift force associated with a return wall jet over the transverse cylinder and the tiny damping force on the truncated cylinder are inaccurately predicted. Numerical diffusion is probably a main cause for these inaccuracies.  相似文献

In this study the basic characteristics of the dynamic response and vortex shedding from an elastically mounted circular cylinder in laminar flow is numerically investigated. The Reynolds number ranges from 80 to 160, a regime that is fully laminar. The governing equations of fluid flow are cast in terms of vorticity. The two-dimensional vorticity transport equation is solved using a vortex method. Effects of important parameters on the system response and vortex shedding are investigated; these include: mass ratio, damping ratio, Reynolds number and reduced velocity. The numerical results show that a decrease in either the mass ratio or damping ratio of the system can lead to an increase in both the oscillation amplitude and the reduced velocity range over which lock-in occurs. The results also suggest that the mass-damping parameter may characterize the system response adequately, although the effect of changing mass ratio appears to be a little more profound compared to damping ratio. Vorticity contour plots suggest that the vortex shedding occurs in the 2S mode, although a wake structure similar to the C(2S) mode appears at distances 15–20 diameters downstream in the lock-in region. The simulation results are in good agreement with previously published data.  相似文献

A numerical study of vortex-induced rotations(VIRs) of an equivalent triangular cylinder, which is free to rotate in the azimuthal direction in a uniform flow, is presented. Based on an immersed boundary method, the numerical model is established, and is verified through the benchmark problem of flow past a freely rotating rectangular body. The computation is performed for a fixed reduced mass of m~*=2.0 and the structural stiffness and damping ratio are set to zero. The effects of Reynolds number(Re=25-180) on the characteristics of VIR are studied. It is found that the dynamic response of the triangular cylinder exhibits four distinct modes with increasing Re: a rest position, periodic rotational oscillation, random rotation and autorotation. For the rotational oscillation mode, the cylinder undergoes a periodic vibration around an equilibrium position with one side facing the incoming flow. Since the rotation effect, the outset of vortex shedding from cylinder shifts to a much lower Reynolds number. Further increase in Re leads to 2 P and P+S vortex shedding modes besides the typical 2 S pattern. Our simulation results also elucidate that the free rotation significantly changes the drag and lift forces. Inspired by these facts, the effect of free rotation on flow-induced vibration of a triangular cylinder in the in-line and transverse directions is investigated. The results show that when the translational vibration is coupled with rotation, the triangular cylinder presents a galloping response instead of vortex-induced vibration(VIV).  相似文献

The flow patterns in the near wake of a cylinder (either circular or square in shape, D=25 mm) placed in the proximity of a fully developed turbulent boundary layer (thickness δ=0.4D) are investigated experimentally using particle image velocimetry (PIV). The effects of changing the gap height (S) between the cylinder bottom and the wall surface, over the gap ratio range S/D=0.1–1.0, have been investigated. The results show that both the ensemble-averaged and instantaneous flow fields are strongly dependent on S/D. The flow patterns for the two types of cylinders share many similarities with respect to the change in S/D, such as the reduced recirculation length and increased velocity fluctuation in the near wake with increasing S/D, as well as the trend of suppression of vortex shedding at small S/D and onset of vortex shedding at large S/D. However, developments of the shear layers, in terms of wake width, flow curvature, etc., are considerably different for these two types of cylinders. In general, the wake development and momentum exchange for the square cylinder are slower those for the circular cylinder at the same gap ratio. Correspondingly, it is shown that the periodic vortex shedding is delayed and weakened in the case of square cylinder, as compared to that of the circular cylinder at the same S/D.

Influence of the turbulence intensity and turbulence length scale on the hydrodynamic characteristics and heat transfer of a circular cylinder, streamlined by a viscous fluid flow, is numerically studied. We take the Reynolds number of the oncoming flow equal to 4×104, the turbulence intensity Tuf and the dimensionless turbulence length scale Lf varying from 1.0% to 40% and from 0.25 to 4.0, respectively. We confirmed that the increase of Tuf leads to the suppression of the periodic vortex shedding from the cylinder surface, and as a result the stationary mode of streamlining is formed. Consequently, with the increasing turbulence intensity directly in front of the cylinder Tu*, the amplitude of the lift coefficient decreases monotonically. Nevertheless, the time-averaged drag coefficient of the streamlined cylinder decreases at Tu*<6.0%, and increases at Tu*>9.0%. The dependence of the average Nusselt number on Tu* is near-linear, and with the increasing turbulence intensity, the Nusselt number rises. However, the change of the average Nusselt number depending on Lf is non-monotonic and at Lf=1.0, the value reaches its maximum.  相似文献

The response of an oscillating circular cylinder at the wake of an upstream fixed circular cylinder was classified by different researchers as galloping, wake induced galloping or wake induced vibration. Furthermore it is already known that a sharp edge square cylinder would undergo galloping if it is subjected to uniform flow. In this study the influence of the wake of a fixed circular cylinder on the response of a downstream square cylinder at different spacing ratios (S/D = 4, 8, 11) is experimentally investigated. The subject appears not to have received previous attention. The lateral displacements, lift forces and the pressure data from gauges mounted in the wake of the oscillating cylinder are recorded and analyzed. The single degree of freedom vibrating system has a low mass-damping parameter and the Reynolds number ranges from 7.7 × 102 to 3.7 × 104.In contrast to that for two circular cylinders in tandem arrangement, the freely mounted downstream square cylinder displays a VIV type of response at all spacing ratios tested. There is no sign of galloping or wake induced galloping with the square cylinder. With increase at the spacing ratio the cross-flow oscillations decrease. It is shown that the vortices arriving from the upstream fixed circular cylinder play a major role on the shedding mechanism behind the downstream square cylinder and cause the square cylinder to shed vortices with frequencies above Strouhal frequency of the fixed square cylinder (St = 0.13). The VIV type of oscillations in the downstream square cylinder is most probably caused by the vortices newly generated behind the square cylinder.  相似文献

In this paper, the hydrodynamic coefficients of a horizontal semi-immersed cylinder in steady current and oscillatory flow combining with constant current are obtained via forced oscillation experiments in a towing tank. Three non-dimensional parameters (Re, KC and Fr) are introduced to investigate their effects on the hydrodynamic coefficients. The experimental results show that overtopping is evident and dominates when the Reynolds number exceeds 5×105 in the experiment. Under steady current condition, overtopping increases the drag coefficient significantly at high Reynolds numbers. Under oscillatory flow with constant current condition, the added mass coefficient can even reach a maximum value about 3.5 due to overtopping while the influence of overtopping on the drag coefficient is minor.  相似文献

An evaluation of four well-known Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS)-based turbulence models was performed in comparison with the results of a dedicated experimental measurement on the near-wake of a circular cylinder in a large water (cavitation) tunnel using a state-of-the-art two-dimensional Digital Particle Image Velocimetry (DPIV) device. The turbulence models investigated were Spalart-Allmaras (S-A), Realizable k-ε (RKE), Wilcox k-ω (WKO) and Shear-Stress-Transport k-ω (SST), which were assessed based on their comparative performances in predicting some important flow field characteristics of the near-wake region of the experimental circular cylinder flow. Within the flow range investigated in this study, which implied a cylinder diameter-based Reynolds Number of 41,300, the qualitative and quantitative comparisons revealed that the application of the SST model to the wall-bounded unsteady flow - that experienced severe adverse pressure gradient, massive flow separation and vortex shedding - presents more successful predictions compared to other models investigated for such challenging flow conditions.  相似文献

The flow about a circular cylinder placed centrally inside a channel is studied numerically with an unstructured collocated grid finite volume method based on the primitive variable formulation. The distance between the channel walls is allowed to vary to change the blockage ratio. Simulations are carried out over a range of Reynolds numbers that are consistent with the two-dimensional assumption. The study confirms that transition to vortex shedding regime is delayed when the channel walls are close to the cylinder because of the interaction between the vortices from the channel wall and cylinder wake. In the unsteady vortex shedding regime, the wake pattern is opposite to the classic Karman street in respect of the positions of the shed vortices. The cylinder drag coefficient and Strouhal number are considerably increased at smaller gaps while the root-mean-squared lift coefficient is significantly decreased. Several important flow parameters are correlated with the input parameters, namely Reynolds number and blockage ratio.  相似文献

Direct numerical simulation was conducted to investigate the flow past a slotted cylinder at low Reynolds number (Re) of 100. The slotting of cylinder affects the boundary layer separation, vortex formation position, recirculation region length and wake width, which are determined by the type of slit. The streamwise slit (SS1), T-shaped slit (SS3) and Y-shaped slit (SS4) act as passive jets, while the transverse slit (SS2) achieves an alternate self-organized boundary layer suction and blowing. The flow rate in slits fluctuates over time due to the alternate vortex shedding and fluctuating pressure distribution around the cylinder surface. One fluctuation cycle of flow rate is caused by a pair of vortices shedding for SS2, SS3 and SS4, while it is created by each vortex shedding for SS1. The wall shear stress and flow impact on the slit wall partly contribute to the hydrodynamic forces acting on the slotted cylinder. Taking into account the internal wall of slit, the transverse slit plays the best role in suppressing the fluid forces with drag reduction of 1.7% and lift reduction of 17%.  相似文献

We present a numerical study on the hydrodynamic performance of undulation NACA0012 foil in the near wake of D-section cylinder. Computations are conducted using unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with a moving adaptive mesh based on laminar flow. Investigations are focused on the effect of distance ratio between foil tip and centre of cylinder (L/D≤2.0) on the thrust/drag performance of foil and cylinder at various foil undulation frequency (St). We found that, foil thrust coefficient (Ct) increases considerably with the appearance of cylinder and an optimal distance exists at which Ct reaches maxima. The maximum increment is about eleven times that of its counterpart of single foil, which is obtained at St=0.23 and L/D=0.5. Our results for the cylinder drag coefficient (Cd) observed the existence of optimal parametric map, combined with various gap ratios and foil frequencies. With these parameters, insertion of an undulation foil can significantly lead to the drag reduction indicating that undulating foil could work efficiently as a passive vortex control device for cylinder drag reduction.  相似文献

The performance of the standard kε, Wilcox high-Reynolds-number kω, Wilcox low-Reynolds-number kω and Smagorinsky's subgrid scale (SGS) turbulence models is examined against the flow around a circular cylinder 0.37 diameter above a rigid wall. The governing equations are solved using finite difference method in a non-orthogonal boundary-fitted curvilinear coordinate system. A mesh dependence study for the four turbulence models is carried out on computational meshes with different densities. In addition, the performance of the kω models with either wall function or no-slip boundary condition on the cylinder surface is examined on the finest mesh. It is found that the SGS model over-predicts the shedding of vortices from the cylinder and is sensitive to the computational mesh and the model constant Cs used. The standard kε and the Wilcox kω models predict the mean velocity field quite well but generally under-predict the velocity and hydrodynamic force oscillations using wall functions on the cylinder surface. It is also found that the Wilcox kω models with the no-slip boundary condition on the cylinder surface give better predictions on the shedding of vortices than their counterparts using the wall function boundary condition.  相似文献

The 'Figure of Eight' pattern in each group is with identical shape but opposite orbital directions. Experimental results are presented in the paper of two elastically supported rigid circular cylinders subjected to steady flows in a flume. The two cylinders were initially placed at various tandem and staggered positions with one in the wake of the other when subject to the steady flows. The in-line centre-to-centre distance varied from 2 to 5 diameters whilst the cross-flow distance from 0 to 2 diameters. The nominal Reynolds numbers were in the sub-critical regime and ranged from 1.12 × 104 to 5.52 × 104, and the nominal reduced velocities from 1.78 to 8.77. The damping ratio of the test set-up is low at 0.003 which gives a combined mass-damping parameter of 0.0046. Both the cylinders were free to respond in both the in-line and the cross-flow directions. The cylinder motion was measured simultaneously with the hydrodynamic loading in the two directions. It was found that the motion trajectories of the downstream cylinder show qualitative difference depending upon whether it is in tandem with the upstream cylinder or in the wake with a transverse offset. The VIV response of the downstream cylinder is dependent upon the reduced velocity of the upstream cylinder and its own reduced velocity based upon the actual mean wake velocity. The drag amplification of the downstream cylinder in the wake appears to be fundamentally different from that of a single VIV cylinder in isolation. Furthermore, unlike the two fixed cylinders in cross flow, the downstream cylinder undergoing VIV no longer experiences a marked non-zero mean lift. The upstream cylinder is largely unaffected by the downstream cylinder when the initial spacing is greater than 3 diameters. On the other hand, the motion response of and the fluid loading on the downstream cylinder are strongly influenced by the upstream cylinder in the spacing range tested.  相似文献

The flow around a cylinder, surface mounted or partly buried has been examined at Reynolds number of 1.3×104 and 2.6×104 by using the flow visualization method in the case of steady current. The lengths of the upstream and downstream separation regions were determined and the characteristics of the flow area were discussed for the cylinder having different burial depth to the diameter ratio (G/D). For comparsion, some numerical results obtained from the application of the FLUENT, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software package have also been presented. Both experimental and numerical results indicated that the lengths of the separation regions near the upstream and downstream of the cylinder decreased with the increasing burial ratio (G/D=0, 0.20, 0.50). The results have significant implications both for the illustration of the potential for using CFD software and highlighting the need for data of two dimensional flow around the buried cylinder.  相似文献
