Abstract

The recovery of ocean tides from satellite altimetry, an attractive alternative to the hydrodynamical‐numerical approach, is investigated to create a global model of the M2 tide. From the outline of the difficulties faced in altimetry interpretation, we bring out general guidelines to extract the tidal information from a short span of measurements. In particular, we discuss the choice of a reference surface and the effect of the orbit error and tidal aliasing on the recovery. From space‐time harmonic analyses of twenty‐four days of SEASAT altimetry, we derive M2 solutions expanded into series of surface spherical harmonics for the Indian, Pacific, and Atlantic Oceans separately and for the world ocean. The M2 cotidal maps we obtain feature qualitatively realistic tidal patterns and are consistent with the deep sea gages data. We then cast the bases to estimate the error budget of the altimeter tide solutions. The M2 fundamental harmonics involved in tidal energetics are evaluated from a spectral convolution of the global solutions with the ocean function and are used to test and discuss our results.

The present tidal recoveries must still be considered as preliminary trials because they are strongly dependent on the limits of the SEASAT mission and subject to improvements via an updating of our analysis procedure. But the altimeter approach of the open ocean tide modelling proves to be efficient, and the objective—to produce highly reliable models with the support of the next generation of satellite altimeters—is reasonably optimistic.  相似文献

Abstract

In this paper the author presents the NSWC ocean tide model of the semidiurnal principal lunar (M2) tide in an atlas of ocean tidal charts and maps. The model is the computer result of a unique combination of mathematical and empirical techniques, which was introduced, extensively tested, and evaluated by Schwiderski (1978a, 1980a, b, 1983e). The computed M2 amplitudes and phases are tabulated along with all specially labeled empirical input data on a 1° × 1 ° grid system in 42° × 71° overlapping charts covering the whole oceanic globe. Corresponding global and arctic corange and cotidal maps are included to provide a quick overview of the major tidal phenomena. Significant qualitative and quantitative features are explained and discussed for proper application. In particular, the charted harmonic constants may be used to compute instantaneous M2 ocean tides with an accuracy of better than 5 cm any time and anywhere in the open oceans. Limitations of this accuracy in coastal waters and border seas are mentioned.

The following four sections of this paper deal with brief reviews, detailed evaluations, and simple improvements of general and special applications of the NSWC ocean tide model. In spite of the numerous and diverse applications with potential possibilities of erroneous interpretations, the results are gratifying without exceptions. For instance, it is concluded that the computed low‐degree spherical harmonic coefficients of the M2 ocean tide model agree with recent empirical satellite solutions as closely as one could wish for within the elaborated nonmodel error bounds. Detailed computations of all significant tidal energy terms produced the following noteworthy results: The rate of supplied tidal energy of 3.50Z1012 Watt matches Cartwright's (1977) estimate of 3.5Z1012 Watt. The rate of energy loss by bottom friction and displacement over the shelves is 1.50Z1012 Watt, which fits into Miller's (1966) estimated range of (1.4–1.7)Z1012 Watt, with a clear bias toward his preferred lower bound. Perhaps most remarkably, the computed range (0.41–0.60)Z1012 Watt for the rate of deep bottom friction work done by the unresolved fluctuating (internal or baroclinic) currents contains in its center Munk's (1966) estimate of 0.5Z1012 Watt and lies safely below Wunsch's (1975) extreme upper bound of 0.7Z1012 Watt, which both authors derived for the rate of energy needed to sustain the internal tidal circulations. As is commonly believed, the results substantiate the fact that the total rate of ocean eddy dissipation (into heat) by the averaged (surface or barotropic) currents and their fluctuating comotions is negligible within three significant figures. Finally, the total tidal energy budget of the oceans is perfectly balanced in realistic terms. Budget deficits in earlier tide models were traced to the following tacit assumptions: The ocean bottom tide is doing positive work on the oceans against the ocean tide. In fact, the bottom displacement work by the ocean tide against the bottom tide is an energy loss at the rate of 1.64Z1012 Watt. The transfer of G. I. Taylor's quadratic bottom friction term from the Irish Sea to the global oceans without accounting for major differences in area resolution scales is directly responsible for significant budget deficits in semiempirical estimates. In contrast, the hydrodynamically more consistent and realistic linear law of bottom friction encountered no serious transplantation difficulties.  相似文献

Progress in tidal science has been rapid in recent years. The advent of precision altimetry has enabled, for the very first time in tidal history, an accurate measurement of tides in most of the global oceans. This has revolutionized our knowledge of tides and tidal processes. Combined with high‐resolution numerical models of tides (and other recent advances in astronomy and geodesy), this increased knowledge is providing valuable assistance in effecting closure on many outstanding problems in this three‐centuries‐old science. For example, we now know the dissipation rate of lunar tides to be 3.17 TW to within 2%. However, there do remain some outstanding issues. While we know the rate at which tidal energy is being dissipated in the global oceans, there is still considerable uncertainty as to the mechanisms, locations, and magnitudes of various tidal energy sinks. Imminent advances in shallow‐water barotropic and deep‐water baroclinic tides hold the prospect of a better understanding of these also. Improved knowledge of oceanic tides and high‐precision satellite measurements of tides are enabling better assessment of some matters of geophysical interest, such as the anelasticity and the length‐of‐day fluctuations of the Earth's mantle. It has been possible to map long‐period lunar tides more accurately and derive their contribution to the Earth's rotation rate fluctuations and its anelasticity at these frequencies. We discuss various aspects related to tides, including tidal dissipation and its consequences, as well as several other topics such as tidal energetics, internal tides, and long‐period tides, where considerable progress has been made in the last decade. Both oceanographic and geophysical implications are mentioned.  相似文献

Due to limit of coverage in TOPEX/Poseidon (T/P) satellite and sparseness of in-situ tide gauges around Antarctica, the accuracy of global ocean tide models in Antarctic seas is relatively poorer than in low- and mid-latitude regions. To better understand ocean tides in Prydz Bay, east Antarctica, a GPS receiver was deployed on floating sea ice to measure tide-induced ice motion in multiple campaigns. Four online Precise Point Positioning (PPP) services are used to process the GPS data in the kinematic PPP mode, and UTide software is used to separate the major tidal constituents. Comparison between results from different processing methods (relative processing solutions from Track, kinematic PPP solutions from online services) and with bottom pressure gauge (BPG) shows that, high-accuracy tidal information can be obtained from GPS observations on floating sea ice, the root-sum-square (RSS) for the eight major constituents (O1, K1, P1, Q1, M2, S2, N2, K2) is below 4 cm. We have also studied the impacts of data span and filter edge effects at daily boundaries on the accuracy of tide estimates, and found that to obtain reliable tide estimates and neglect the filter edge effects, continuous observation longer than 30 days is necessary. Our study suggests that GPS provides an independent method to estimate tides in Prydz Bay, and can be an alternative to tidal gauges, which are costly and hard to maintain in Antarctica.  相似文献

We adopt a parameterized internal tide dissipation term to the two-dimensional (2-D) shallow water equations, and develop the corresponding adjoint model to investigate tidal dynamics in the South China Sea (SCS). The harmonic constants derived from 63 tidal gauge stations and 24 TOPEX/Poseidon (T/P) satellite altimeter crossover points are assimilated into the adjoint model to minimize the deviations of the simulated results and observations by optimizing the bottom friction coefficient and the internal tide dissipation coefficient. Tidal constituents M2, S2, K1 and O1 are simulated simultaneously. The numerical results (assimilating only tidal gauge data) agree well with T/P data showing that the model results are reliable. The co-tidal charts of M2, S2, K1 and O1 are obtained, which reflect the characteristics of tides in the SCS. The tidal energy flux is analyzed based on numerical results. The strongest tidal energy flux appears in the Luzon Strait (LS) for both semi-diurnal and diurnal tidal constituents. The analysis of tidal energy dissipation indicates that the bottom friction dissipation occurs mainly in shallow water area, meanwhile the internal tide dissipation is mainly concentrated in the LS and the deep basin of the SCS. The tidal energetics in the LS is examined showing that the tidal energy input closely balances the tidal energy dissipation.  相似文献

The Southern Ocean hosts significant topographic mixing that might be associated with internal tides. Tidal signals are evident in bottom temperature at 1000 m in Drake Passage, suggesting that internal tides with an amplitude of between ∼20 and 200 m may be present. Various necessary conditions for internal tide generation show that the steep topography in and around Drake Passage can initiate internal tides, and recent global tide models have suggested this region to generate very large interface displacements. Here, we present an attempt to detect internal tides in Drake Passage. During the last 10 years, combinations of bottom pressure recorders and inverted echo sounders have been deployed in the region. The bottom pressure recorders measure predominantly the barotropic tide; the inverted echo sounders measure travel time from sea bed to sea surface and therefore are influenced both by sea level (barotropic tide) and internal sound speed (internal tide). By subtracting one from the other, the internal tide should be detectable. Although the technique works successfully around Hawaii, it does not prove the existence of large internal tides in Drake Passage. The detectability of the internal tidal signal in Drake Passage is investigated using a six-layer one-dimensional model to simulate the bottom pressure and travel time signals of a semi-diurnal tide. The temperature and salinity stratification in Drake Passage is sufficiently weak that large vertical excursions are necessary to produce a signal in travel time detectable above the noise in Drake Passage. An internal tide of at least 70 or 20 m in northern and southern Drake Passage, respectively, would be detected. The fact that these are, perhaps surprisingly, not detected by the combination of bottom pressure and travel time, constrains the internal tides in Drake Passage to be ∼20 m in southern Drake Passage, and between 20 and 70 m in northern Drake Passage. The model also predicts that satellite altimetry would not be able to detect internal tides in Drake Passage, but would in the Brazil Basin and Hawaii regions.  相似文献

This paper presents a five-year global simulation of HYCOM, the HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model, that simultaneously resolves the eddying general circulation, barotropic tides, and baroclinic tides with 32 layers in the vertical direction and 1/12.5° (equatorial) horizontal grid spacing. A parameterized topographic wave drag is inserted into the model and tuned so that the surface tidal elevations are of comparable accuracy to those in optimally tuned forward tide models used in previous studies. The model captures 93% of the open-ocean sea-surface height variance of the eight largest tidal constituents, as recorded by a standard set of 102 pelagic tide gauges spread around the World Ocean. In order to minimize the impact of the wave drag on non-tidal motions, the model utilizes a running 25-h average to approximately separate tidal and non-tidal components of the near-bottom flow. In contrast to earlier high-resolution global baroclinic tide simulations, which utilized tidal forcing only, the simulation presented here has a horizontally non-uniform stratification, supported by the wind- and buoyancy forcing. The horizontally varying stratification affects the baroclinic tides in high latitudes to first order. The magnitude of the internal tide perturbations to sea surface elevation amplitude and phase in a large box surrounding Hawai’i is quite similar to that observed in satellite altimeter data, although the exact locations of peaks and troughs in the modeled perturbations differ from those in the observed perturbations.

The spring-neap cycle of global energy dissipation by ocean tides is calculated with a view to trying to explain an observed anomaly in the tidal fluctuations in the length of day. Calculations are performed in three ways: dissipation by friction linearly proportional to semidiurnal tide velocity, by quadratic friction, and by the torques of the lunar and solar tidal forces on the solar and lunar ocean tides, respectively. All methods give comparable results equivalent to an amplitude of about 0.1 μs change in the length of day with a small phase lag. These are inadequate to explain the observed anomaly of about 3 μs and 0.1 rad phase lag. Further investigations, to determine the generation of a non-equilibrium global MSf wave of equatorial amplitude 0.9 mm by nonlinear interactions in shallow seas using global tide models and observations, are suggested.  相似文献

Current measurements carried out at the depth of 4 m above the sea bottom near the northern edge of the Suruga Trough in the early fall of 1985 indicated the existence of strong semidiurnal tidal currents, which were considered to be associated with internal tides. In order to examine the spatial structure of the bottom intensified tidal flow, more detailed current observations were carried out at three or four depths at two stations along the main axis of the Suruga Trough during about 70 days from August to October 1988. We obtained the following results: (1) the variations of the current velocity caused by the semidiurnal and diurnal internal tides are evident in all of the records, and the orientation of the major axis of each tidal ellipse nearly coincides with that of the main axis of the trough; (2) the semidiurnal internal tide is dominant over the diurnal internal tide at 4 m above the sea bottom at both stations; (3) at the northern station the semidiurnal internal tide is dominant over the diurnal internal tide, whereas they are nearly equal at the southern station except at 4 m above the sea bottom; (4) the biharmonic internal tides with 1/3 day and 1/4 day periods, are found near the sea bottom and the major axis of the tidal ellipse is perpendicular to the orientation of the main axis of the Suruga Trough.  相似文献

A vertically integrated two‐dimensional (2‐D) and a five‐layer three‐dimensional (3‐D) numerical models were developed to compute the tides in the Gulf of Suez, Egypt. The computational grid used to schematize the Gulf has a horizontal resolution of 3 × 3 km and consists of a lattice of 23 × 100 points in the 2‐D model and five such lattices in the 3‐D model. Both 2‐D and 3‐D simulations clearly revealed the Kelvin wave nature of the tide with partial reflection. The M2 simulations also showed a strong tidal signature in the southern sector as compared to the northern part. For the 3‐D simulations, the horizontal and vertical eddy viscosity coefficients and the coefficient of bottom friction were respectively set to 3 × 106 cm2/s, 200 cm2/s, and 0.001. The tidal range decreases from the entrance of the Gulf of Suez toward the Bank of Tor where it reaches a small value and then increases again to about 1.5 m at Suez. A difference of six hours exists between the times of high water at the southern and northern ends of the Gulf. Quantitatively the agreement between the observed and computed tide is better in the 2‐D simulation than in the 3‐D simulation. However, the counterclockwise gyres in the top three layers of the 3‐D model (upper 30 m) during slack water following the flood tide do not appear in the 2‐D simulation.  相似文献

The present tidal correction of sea level records of Satellite with ARgoes and ALtimeter (SARAL) is based on the finite element solution (FES) of global tide model FES2012 tidal solution. In this study, we examined the validity of the tidal corrections in the coastal oceans around India using tide gauge measurements and a regional tidal model. Our regional model is based on the barotropic version of the Princeton Ocean Model that is forced by the time-varying tidal levels at the open ocean end based on the global FES99 tidal solution. Tide charts prepared from the simulated tidal levels are very similar to the FES tidal solutions. Comparison with the tide gauge measurement shows close agreement with the regional tidal solutions. On the other hand, the agreement with the FES tide models differ significantly in the Gulf of Khambhat and the Gulf of Kutch on the northwest, and in the Hooghly estuary on the northeast continental shelf. However, the agreement is exceptional in other parts of the study domain. These tidal solutions are used in the SARAL-ALTIKA X-track data to assess the FES tidal correction and to draw some inferences associated with the coastal processes. It is revealed that these corrections are reasonably accurate for the coastal oceans around India except the aforementioned converging channels.  相似文献

Free oscillations in the period range from 9 to 40 h and their corresponding adjoint solutions are used to synthesize semidiurnal and diurnal tides of second degree. The free oscillations are determined with explicit consideration of frictional terms and the full loading and self-attraction effect. This allows for a detailed analysis of the loading and self-attraction effect on the dynamics of ocean tides, e.g. a physical explanation is given for the induced phase delay computed by ocean tide models.Further, the synthesis gives a spectral composition of certain well known tidal features and pairs of free oscillations are identified, diminishing their contribution either on a global or local scale.  相似文献

The modeling results of surface and internal M2 tides for summer and winter periods in the Arctic Ocean (AO) are presented. We employed a modified version of the three-dimensional finite-element hydrothermodynamic model QUODDY-4 differing from the original model by using a rotated (instead of spherical) coordinate system and by considering the equilibrium-tide effects. It has been shown that the modeling results for the surface tide differs little from the results obtained earlier by other authors. According to these results, the amplitudes of internal tidal waves (ITWs) in the AO are significantly lower than in other oceans and the ITWs proper have the character of trapped waves. Their source of generation is located at the continental slope northwest of the New Siberian Islands. Our results are consistent with the fields of average (over a tidal cycle) and integral (by depth) densities of baroclinic tidal energy, the maximum baroclinic tidal velocity, and the coefficient of diapycnic mixing. The local rate of baroclinic tidal energy dissipation at the AO ridges increases as it approaches the bottom, as was observed on Mid-Atlantic and Hawaii ridges (but merely within the bottom boundary layer) and is two to three orders of magnitude lower than in other oceans. The ITW degeneration scale in the AO is several hundreds of kilometers in summer and winter, remaining within the range of its values between 100 and 1000 km in mid- and low-latitude oceans. In both seasons, the integral (over the AO area) rate of baroclinic tidal energy dissipation is two orders of magnitude lower than the global estimate (2.5 × 1012 W).  相似文献

Nearly all of our understanding of rocky inter‐tidal ecology comes from studies conducted at low tide. To study inter‐tidal organisms at high tide, we anchored waterproof digital GoPro® video cameras in wave‐exposed tidepools and recorded the daytime movements of the black turban snail, Tegula funebralis, over the tidal cycle between May and August 2012 near Bodega Bay, California. Overall, snails moved more quickly and presumably foraged more during low tides and on days with warmer air and perhaps water temperatures. This is similar to other ectotherms that exhibit increased metabolic rates, movement and foraging in warmer conditions. Snails also moved less during flood and high tides, may have moved downward in tidepools at flood tides, and showed evidence of reduced activity on days with larger waves. This inactivity and refuge seeking may have been a strategy to avoid dislodgment by waves. Analysis of snail trajectories showed foraging bouts indicated by alternating zig‐zagging and straight movement. There was no effect of temperature, wave height, or tidal phase on distribution of snail turning angles, suggesting that they may have foraged consistently but moved faster during warm conditions and low tides, thereby grazing a larger area. This is one of few direct recordings of inter‐tidal organisms on wave‐exposed rocky shores during high tide. The methods used here are easily transferable to other studies, which are needed to increase our understanding of behaviors that structure rocky shore communities during high tide.  相似文献

Year long measurements of bottom pressure were made at 2,036 m depth in Sagami Trough, at 2,538 m depth in Suruga Trough, and at 32 m depth in the south of Minami-Daitojima Island. Amplitudes and phase lags of the major constituents of tides were estimated by the response method, and they were compared with the observational results at several tide stations operated by the Japan Meteorological Agency. A comparison with Schwiderski's global models for the eight tidal constituents showed that the amplitudes were in good accordance to one another within 3 cm, and that the differences of phase lags were less than 15°. The largest portion of the variations of the bottom pressure was caused by the tides: the variance of the major eight constituents was more than 98.5% as large as the total variance. The measurements show that tidal waves can be recorded offshore with a sufficient accuracy by the quartz sensors. Drifts of indication of the pressure gauges were significant and they prevented detection of a long-term variation which might be caused by fluctuations of the ocean currents or by the eddies.  相似文献

This paper discusses tidal effects on an observation scheme to determine a point at the bottom of the sea by combining GPS and Sonar observations. For the purpose, three kinds of Earth tides are introduced (i.e., the crust tide, the equipotential surface point (ocean depth) tide, and the geoid tide). The corresponding mathematical expressions are derived to demonstrate the tidal effects on GPS and Sonar observations. The relations between the Earth tides are also discussed. Theoretical results imply a very interesting conclusion, namely that, for a local area, the static position of a point at the bottom of sea can be obtained by the dynamic observations without any tidal correction. Actually, the tidal effects cancel each other in the mentioned observation scheme. It therefore indicates that the observation scheme is free of tidal effects. Furthermore, we learned that the divergence caused by any error source on ocean surface is canceled and does not affect the final results. Therefore, to determine the position of a point at the bottom of sea, we need not consider any tidal effects.  相似文献
